Hillary’s Horse
Tragedy struck the first filly in the Kentucky Derby since 1999, as Eight Belles went down on the track after her second-place finish today, broke two ankles, and was euthanized.
Showing a sisterhood with the female horse, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., during a trip to Louisville this week had said she was going to bet on Eight Belles to win, place, and show.
ABC News’ Karen Travers reports that Clinton told supporters in Jeffersonville, Ind., earlier this week, "I hope that everybody will go to the derby on Saturday and place just a little money on the filly for me. I won’t be able to be there this year — my daughter is going to be there and so she has strict instructions to bet on Eight Belles."
Travers also points out that Eight Belles’ trainer, Larry Jones, returned the love. "It looks like it could be the year for the girls," he said. "Eight Belles I’m sure would want to endorse."
The horse Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., picked to show — Big Brown — won the Derby.
Obama had picked Colonel John to win (he came in 6th) and Pyro to place (he came in 8th).
Chelsea Clinton attended the Derby. Kentucky’s primary, which Clinton is favored to win, will be held on May 20.

UPDATE: People, people…I am not making light of this horse’s death, nor am I inviting you to do so. Please keep the comments civil.

The parallels are a little weird and I hate even bringing them up. Big Brown had only had only run three races and people were questioning his experience. Eight Belles was the only filly in the race and comes in second. Though if it was an exact parallel Big Brown would have won by a head, rather than comfortably by 6 lengths

Considering that’s the best that a filly’s done in 20 years (in the Derby), not bad. She absolutely ran her huge heart out, and I wish I could sock people for saying that she wasn’t as good as the boys – she was better than all of them but one.
Also, I would hearken to say that a 2 minute race will hardly foreshadow politics… however, if it does, you shall see me investing in some horseflesh.
RIP, Eight Belles.

My condolences to the owners of Eight Belles and her fans. Something needs to be done about the number of breakdowns in horse racing–especially after Barbaro–although I don’t know what the solution is.
If there are Obama supporters out there cheering the death of a horse because Hillary bet on her, then they need psychological help. If there are Obama supporters out there blaming Eight Belles death on Hillary, then they need psychological help.
Way to take away from the real issues.

The lesson learned: Horse racing is legalized animal abuse run by patricians–for patricians. How fitting that Hillary feels so comfortable in this pinkie-in-the-air pastime.
Next time let’s get all of you horse racing fans out of bed and whip your hind end to make you run whether you want to or not.
But hey…it’s for money so it must be OK. Right?

The saddest issue here has not even been mentioned. The billions of dollars spent in the horse racing industry has corruption than any other organization and you people reduce this to a political race.
If horses could talk (which they do on occasion!)they would say we are a bunch of selfish, egocentric idiots that are doing a good job of making fools of themselves.
My vote goes to Eight Belles who ran an amazing race for us humans and died trying.

I’m heartbroken that Eight Belles had to be put down. There are too many breakdowns in horse racing. To have grown to 17 hands so quickly makes me think her bones may not have been strong enough for this length of race. She was put down because she had broken both front ankles leaving her without a leg to stand on literally. Plus it was reported that they were compound fractures (broken skin) which leads to infection that horses seldom recover from. It sounds like her case was totally different than Barbaro’s. To think someone would put her down because she was a filly and not a colt is not correct.
For anyone to make light of her death gauls me. And I am an Obama supporter but what in the world does that have to do with anything about the horse?

I support Mr. Obama through and through. No one can deny the irony in this tragic event in the Derby’s history. The fact is this has nothing to do with politics, but amplifies the ignorance/arrogance of those making a debacle of it. Shame on both Clinton & Obama campaign supporters, not the candidates. Both sides are just a guilty and rediculous as the other. If we would take a step back, we’d see we all want the same prospects for our country. Instead we whine, complain, and criticize each other over and over. Those attitudes is what lead to where we are today.
Posted by: Chuck | May 3, 2008, 8:10 pm 8:10 pm
The main story is the horse race. An I’m sad for the horse that had to be put down. But anyone reading this blog is here for politics. And the political irony of it is pretty funny. I mean, come on. Big Brown beats the filly and they put the filly out her misery? The only way it could portray the Dem primary more is if Eight Belles had gotten up with two broken ankles and trotted around the track a few more times, claiming that the race wasn’t over yet.
And out of curiosity, how did the 72 year old horse do?
Posted by: Fischer | May 3, 2008, 8:12 pm 8:12 pm
While part of me would like to believe it is an omen spelling Hillary’s downfall, I think it is actually tragic to see a great racehorse die….Sad….Though I guess I feel like Hillary’s entire election campaign has been tragic too. A once great candidate overcome by bad advice, bad strategy, and a propensity to lie and pander, who is still running even though numerically she can’t win. Tragic too I guess.
Posted by: James | May 3, 2008, 8:14 pm 8:14 pm
I am soooo sad about 8 belles. I followed the Barbaro story until the end. I personally think they have too many horses running at 20. I am an animal lover and feel I may not watch another Derby after 2 yrs in a row.
Now to politics.
If 8 Belles had won Hillary would have beaten the story to death!! We never would have heard the end of it and you ALL know Hillary. She looks for this stuff to puff herself up.
Hillary must go.

A lot of convoluted thinking and reasoning in here; folks, this is not about the political campaigns.
She ran a great race and unfortunately we lost her. It is a sad day for horse race fans as well as those of us who don’t love racing but love the animals. To make this about anything more is ridiculous.
Posted by: Equus | May 3, 2008, 8:19 pm 8:19 pm
Trust people to try and link a tragedy like the death of Eight Belles with politics. We should mourning her loss instead of making jokes about how it ties in with the campaign.
I don’t give a crap who voted on who. We need to sit back and have a moment of silence for our little filly, Eight Belles. She didn’t run the Derby for campaign purposes! It was obvious she /loved/ to run, and that was her motivation as well as to make her jockey happy. R.I.P Eight Belles, I’m glad you could escape the politics.

So little class – finding humor in the death of a fine, strong horse. These are the same people who booed Governor Easley at last night’s dinner featuring both Clinton and Obama.

This just breaks my heart. I don’t understand how some people can be so disconnected from the tragic death of a beautiful animal like this. I want a horse race fan to explain to me why horse racing should not be considered abuse? Don’t tell me that she ran for her jockey to make him happy. Do you honestly not believe she would not have rather been in the fields grazing? I wish there was some way to shut down horse racing and dog racing. This really just broke my heart.
Posted by: BPA | May 3, 2008, 8:41 pm 8:41 pm
I find it pathetic to have so many bring politics into the death of Eight Belles. She had to be put down because, as a three year old her bones were simply not strong enough for the race. If it weren’t for Barbaros tragic broken foot, I’m sure that the cry would be that females just aren’t strong enough, but that isn’t the case. We need to put an end to the racing of three-year-olds. It would not be a tragedy if the Derby were run between four-year-olds. Maybe if something tragic happens every year the kindness of those who love horses will put an end to the the vanity of humans destroying these lovely animals. Another problem may be that todays racers are all descendents of Native Dancer, and the gene pool just isn’t diverse enough. Let’s find the answer and stop cheering for people who seem to care more for money and victory than having races between strong, mature horses. Those races would be equally exciting. Let’s all get behind those horses that we love.

OK I did make a mistake and I stand to be corrected. I get the races mixed up but I followed the care of Barbaro after the race. It seemed like last year but you are right it was 2006.
Regardless of the timing I still say Hillary Clinton Drama Queen that she is would have played this to the hilt and made me ill!
Go ahead and vote for her and when she gets the White House and turns into another BUSH don’t whine about it. She’s doing the campaign trail like a pro.
I met Hillary when she was running for NY senator. My boyfriend was her official photographer in Davenport, NY. Senator Moynihan lived near me and trust me she knows how to be a politician…smilin’ and shankin’ hands and doing all that. Moynihan had no one else to pass the torch to so she was it. Senator Moynihan and his wife (an Obama endorser) did not like her at all! Hater her if truth be known. She ran against a virtual unknown candidate so she couldn’t lose.

You are right it IS shameful and I do feel deeply about the horse being put down. That’s without a doubt. BUT we are talking about politics on this blog because Hillary staked claim to her. Another thing you should take into consideration is that your candidate acts like this on a daily basis and sees no shame in ripping everyone and every little thing apart to win this nomination. My point blogs ago was if this horse had won we would have heard about for the next month! She doesn’t really care about you and I…she cares about herself and feels an entitlement to the Presidency. You don’t really know the REAL Hillary because if you did you wouldn’t be voting for her.

Its not real hard to pick a favorite who is sure to win. But to pick a long shot who serpassed everyones expectasions is a diffrent story.
So go ahead and pick a man who will always go with a sure bet instead of take a gamble and our country will never change. We have been voting on a sure bet for years and look at were its got us.
And I,m not really sure who you all think your fooling by thinking we are going to pick our next president because Bush is going to declare that he stays in because of our current state in the war. Because he is a money and power hungry individuale and because he can.

Of course the Obama jerks are out in force claiming this tragic accident is some sort of Sign. What a bunch of vampires. This is exactly the kind of thing that drove me away from Obama–the “supporters” he has both in the media and on the ground.
And btw, those who think Obama picked the winner–have you ever been to a horse race? According to Tapper here, Barack picked Colonel John to Win, BB to Show. Colonel John didn’t even place. So you better wonder what that says about the general election, if you’re silly enough to think the tragedy of a courageous horse has anything to do with predictions of the future.

Can you people really not see the difference between some lighthearted political fun before the race and then using the animal’s tragedy to make ugly political jokes and references?
On second thought, it doesn’t really seem like you do have that ability to make intelligent and moral distinctions.

It is wrong for anyone to point out the political hay (no pun intended) Hillary tried to make out of this (real) horse race. And, it is wrong to suggest that if Eight Belles had won and survived that Hillary would be whooping it from every stage from here to the KY primary – trying to make every connection she possibly could to boost her chances for victory in her *own* horse race. Let’s just forget about her pandering and political maneuvering and have a moment of silence.

Hillary assumes it was a man who doctored the video of cantor. She has no evidence of this. This story has gotten no coverage. So whenever there is a problem she will assume it is the fault of a man.
“It’s just something that is clearly unfortunate that people would go to all the time and trouble to make something up like that,” Clinton told the J&C. “And I assume nobody would believe such a thing, because it’s totally wrong. And the director of it confirmed that it was doctored. Maybe the press should be trying to figure out why he did what he did.”

The comments from some Obama supporters here are truly repulsive in their insensitivity and inhumanity to the tragedy that happened today.
Grow up. You’re not doing your candidate any favors by trying to make lack of compassion a trademark of Obama supporters.

If you were watching MSNBC on Friday morning, you would have seen Joe Scarborough observing on his show that Hillary Clinton was betting on Eight Belles. Joe quipped that, because the horse may represent Hillary Clinton’s efforts, it would be weird if the filly came up lame and had to be put down. I wonder if anyone in the media is going to bring up Joe’s creepy ‘now-clairvoyant’ comment?

IS IT A SIGN? Hillary Clinton described herself as the philly “Eight Bells”. At least before the philly at the Kentucky derby came in second place on Satruday and eventually had to be sadly euthanized. Will she come in second and will her fight to the finish, tearing down the dems party, also have to be euthanized by the superdelegates?????

Women just aren’t as adept as men. If the USA bets on Hillary we will get the same payoff as those who bet on Eight Belles and Governor Kathleen Blanco. Mother Nature has no mercy.

I think Obama supporters are happy Hillary Clinton put her money on Eight Belles.

So much for “betting on the philly”. Hillary Clinton picked a dead horse. Her campaign will soon suffer the same fate. She’ll trip up in the upcoming primaries, and, like Eight-Belles, she’ll have to be put down, politically speaking. Hillary has a lot in common with Eight-Bells, she’ll never win another race after the Primaries are over, and it will be the professionals (Super Delegates) that decide that the time has come to put her down.

WAKE UP PEOPLE..HILLARY AND OBAMA ARE NOT ENEMIES. stop tearing each other down..they are just doing what is the sad norm in politics. stop getting so emotional over this race. it makes sense to be emotional over the horse the poor thing. Hillary and Obama will unite after this is all said and done. Dems need to stop acting like babies and just be happy with either nom..they will both be good for this country.
Im disturbed that some are too silly to realize that just someone is criticizing Hillary it doesnt mean they support Obama.. The right has HATED hillary for about a decade or more and are salavating laughing at DEMS fighting with eachother! Grow up.

I am not a Hillary supporter or a Obama supporter. I am a supporter for shortening the 1 3/4 mile track to 1 mile. 99% of the deaths and serious injuries happen in the last 1/4 mile of this race. Anyone who really cares about their horse would never inter their horse in such a race as this. Its not their horse they care about, its the money and power. Anyone who would inter a filly with narrow bones as this horse had certainly does not care about their horse. People, this is not about politics, its about the unnessary death a horse who is dependent upon their owners treatment. I may never watch a horse race again. And you idiots who are using this horses death to plung for your candidate are unhuman at the least.

Yet in reality they are just a bunch of left wing loonies who are haters and want to deride anyone who isnt as demented as them. Just like their leader, the hypocrite. Never have we seen a more polarizing candidate. To Obama supporters: America gets it and now we know him, stop the charade. Mr Momentum is dropping like a stone in every poll. But the thing is comparison to this filly and Clinton is very close… For one thing Clinton political life fate is similiar ..She will lose and like this filly her political life( president hope) will be over too
Also if this filly would have won then Clinton would have used this filly’s victory shamelessly to promote herself….
Clinton used the filly for political reasons — hence It is hence a fair game

Is this the great leader that should be picking up the phone at 3am? Hillary only looked on the surface instead of digging for more facts. Interesting that my blog was removed. I didn’t say anything about race or gender regarding the “people” but I obviously struck a nerve. So, now I will talk about race and gender. The Demi race IS about Race and Gender; Obama = race card, Hillary = Gender. For most white women I speak to it’s about getting a woman in the White House. For black people, minorities and those who don’t want to work it’s about getting a minority in the White House (who will “understand” where they are coming from). Let me tell you, neither candidate gives a damn about our interests. They are power-hungry, self-centered, narcissist snobs (as shown by their Derby “Betting” and presence). It’s just about getting into the White House and, if you libbies would listen, that is what they say! But I’ve come to the conclusion Liberals don’t know how to listen.
FYI – I am an independent. I haven’t voted in years. That is my vote! Fire them all.

Liberals can not handle intelligent conversation. I am devastated about the horse. Does anyone realize that Eight Belles was run in a race the day before the Derby? The owners should be horse-whipped, just as the jockey whipped Eight Belles while going for the finish line. Check the video. The jockey should be suspended.

It is unfortunate the untimley death of eight belles’. Obviously horse racing like most any sport save chess, is dangerous and should never be taken for granted. Ken-
Get your fact straight – Eight Belles did not run the day before Derby. The KY Oaks race – only for fillies – is run on the day before the race, but she absolutely didn’t run. Her trainer ran another horse that won the Oaks, but it wasn’t Eight Belles. Stick to politics.

RIP Eight Belles. You ran your heart out, which from the way you went after Big Brown, is probably what you loved to do.
The political connection to me is just plain silly. It’s like when a movie star picks a candidate or cause and I’m supposed to care. It’s just one person making one choice. The candidates were having a little fun at the races and it was blown into a frenzy.
For the person who asked if the horse would have been put down if she were a male, the answer is yes. One hurt leg is really hard to deal with. It’s over with two. Horses have to stand up all the time (or their organs can’t function), and with two injured legs they have no way to keep them standing without all the complications that can arise from even one injured leg (like Barbaro).
It’s also true that I can’t afford (or even get tickets to) the Derby, but I still love the spirit of the animals.
-a Louisvillian.

I agree that Hillary was told to pick that horse by her handlers and I would imagine that the same holds true for Obama. But I think their choice does matter because ultimately they will have these same people around them when they have to make an important decision.(3am anyone) The questions everyone should be asking are really the following: At such an important point in the nomination path would you even bet knowing that everyone is watching your every move? And if you do bet, wouldn’t you want to get it right? Not just use it to pander for votes. Hillary reeks of special interests and I bet if she does get into the White House that she would have to pay back a lot of favors that she called in just to get there.

I would like to know if the tragedy of Eight Belles could have been prevented. As far as I could see, it did not appear as though she had on any front support boots or leg wraps. I do not have a d.v.r., so was unable to rewind to a scene without mud on her. I also firmly believe that the racehorse industry starts them out too early, before they have a chance to develop fully. There are some disciplines that believe that a horse should not carry a rider until thet are four years old.
I know there are many horse lovers in the industry, and I also know there are money lovers. If there were any thing that could have been taken into account, or changed, then it may be something that can save one in the future.
Thank you for your time.

Eight Belles was run beyond her abilities. The jockey should not have had to whip the hell out of her to get her to run the final length.
Nobody is talking about the inbreeding and hormone therapy that goes on with these horses to make them bigger and faster. They make them bigger and faster but they do nothing for the bones, esp. leg bones. What happened to natural selection and survival of the fittest? Darwin is rolling over in his grave. We are playing God and we are failing. We are abusing God’s gifts.
Which brings me to the pedigree of our politicians. Does anyone know that Al Gore and G. W. Bush are distant cousins all related to Queen Elizabeth? That’s what I have read. Our aristocrats are no better than those in France during the French Revolution. We need a new revolution. Where have all our statesman gone, like John Adams?

Not that I have strong views on this, but I would like to see the political candidates doing the smart thing and remember the people that brought them to the dance. All of the race horse people I have met seem to be cowboy hat wearing republicans. If republicans who seem to depressed at the performance of President Bush and his policies, don’t even show up to vote; then is it worth it to chase republican votes at the expense of your own base?

Laura: Obama ran against Alan Keyes, who I think was from Baltimore, because the Republican candidate got caught in a marital scandal and Keyes was the only Republican that they could find.
Clinton ran against Rudi Giuliani, who dropped out because of health and marital problems. Lazio was known in New York and tried for the Republican nomination before Giuliani.
Moynaham was a Republican who became a Democrat, who was never seen in NY except at election time.

It is a terrible shame the breakdown of
Eight Belles. But the real shame is that Americans forget ALL of the scandles caused by the Clintons. I am a republican, and pulled a democrat ballot to vote against Hillary Clinton. Doesn’t anyone remember the generation of children who forced their parents to explain what oral sex was when we were all forced to watch that scandle on the evening news. This
country can’t take anymore of the Clintons. If you would all wise up and look at the History of Bill Clinton’s eight years, any intelligent person can see that September 11 was a direct result of Bill Clinton and his policies.
The first attack on the World Trade Center was under his watch, and for the first time in history you could no longer drive in front of the White House. They will lie, (sniper fire??)
cheap, and stoop to any means to further their power. The only reason they didn’t go back to Arkansas was to move to New York so Hillary could become a Senator, then run for President. Look at the history…

Yes EHJ I knew about Keyes and Guiliani. I don’t know about Moynihan. He was certainly respected here in upstate NY. Possibly because he had a home here. So what you are saying is Obama won only because Keyes messed up with scandal problems??? I don’t have a clue on Illinois politics thats why I’m asking.

For all of you who are so distraught over the tragic death of Eight-Belles, and who are so outraged over the comments on this blog, I offer these sobering thoughts:
Horses are among the most beautiful creatures on the face of the earth, and certainly it is TRAGEDY when even one of them has an accident that requires them to be put down. But lets not lose all sense of proportionality. This was a horse, not a human being. If you are so distraught and outraged over the death of this horse, then where is your outrage and distress over the deaths of more than 4000 American soldiers, and over 20,000 Iraqi civillian HUMAN BEINGS who have been killed over the past 4 years because Hillary Clinton was too bust to read the intelligence reports and had to show how “tough” she was by voting to authorize a war over weapons of mass destruction that never existed in the first place. So I ask all you self-rightious animal lovers:
WHICH IS THE GREATER TRAGEDY–THE SENSELESS DEATH OF ONE RACEHORSE, OR THE SENSELESS DEATHS OF OVER 24,000 HUMAN BEINGS IN THE IRAQ WAR? Where oh where is your outrage about that?
Posted by: Long Tall Texan | May 4, 2008, 3:46 pm 3:46 pm
Horses can teach America a lot…If people would pay attention to what is really important. Eight Belles was brave, strong in heart. That is proven by her coming in second. We all need a little horse medicine at times. So we can learn empathy, wisdom, and the power of the heart.
I have dreamed of having the chance to be at the Derby. I hope someday, I will be there with my big hat.lol
Some horses have such spirit it is just in them. Before you pass judgement, own a horse. I do and I enjoy my horse very much and his heart and spirit. If people had the spirit and heart of horses wow what a world. Blessings to you all and my thoughts go out to the trainers, owners and jockies.Your horse will be remembered.

I’m sorry about the filly’s death but the irony is just to great not to comment on it…the underdog philly, who Hillary definitely compared herself to, ran her heart out but in the end was beat by BIG BROWN and after crossing the finish line collapses, so broken that she has to be euthanized. Come on people if you can’t see the delicious irony and foreshadowing in that, you have rocks in your head. She’s the one that started it and you better beleive if Eight Belles had won, Hillary would have been using that distinction til the cows came home. I LOVE IT!

Irony is never delicious unless there is some level of complexity or cleverity. Obama supporters alas are too slow witted to understand the difference between irony worth commenting on and a tragic coincidence that reveals anyone who discusses it with amusement as a simpleton and a low class twit.

I think that anyone who would found humor in the death of this poor horse is a moron. Think about her trainers and owners – this horse was like a member of the family to them and now she’s gone and they’re heartbroken. Yet a bunch of Obama supporters are getting their jollies by slamming Hillary for picking the horse. Well, all of you can go straight to hell as far as I’m concerned. Some things just aren’t funny, you pea-brains.

I FEEL SAD FOR THE HORSES OWNER, AND THE ONES WHO REALLY CARED ABOUT THE HORSE. IT IS A SAD DAY WHEN A HORSES DEATH AFTER COMING IN 2ND PLACE, IS USED AS A WEAPON FOR PUT DOWNS AGAINST SOMEONE RUNNING IN THE POLITICAL RACE, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY ARE A WOMAN OR NOT.

“Proof That: Betting by Gender is as a dumb as Voting by Gender.”
Actually Eight Belles was a good bet since she finished second with 12:1 odds, so it’s not really proof of anything is it?
Voting based only on race or gender is dumb, though. Obama’s 80-90% African American support accounts for nearly every one of his state victories.
When he loses to McCain in November, the dumbness of a race-based vote for a weak candidate like Obama will be brought home again.

look back at our struggle for freedom

is strewn with the bones of a horse

The most ironic part of this story is that Matt Lauer of the Today show described this situation exactly on Thursday or Friday! After NBC did a segment on Hillary backing 8 Bells as a metaphor for her campaign, Matt made the comment something to the effect of: “let’s hope the horse doesn’t break a leg an have to be put down”. Deja Vu all over again!
Posted by: Dave | May 4, 2008, 6:54 pm 6:54 pm
why is anthropomorphising acceptable in this case? Greed ran this race and her death was a sacrifice for our enjoyment. You are really stretching the point here. Deal with the fact that horse racing is a sport of greed and yes there is a corellation to politics. The gender of a horse who would rather be eating oats now than be buried or in a glue factory is not witty. It is just stupid. Hillary wants to run did anyone ask this horse if she wanted to run?I think the payoff was too big to worry about that.
Posted by: tamara | May 4, 2008, 7:46 pm 7:46 pm
It’s a shame none of the candidates have the guts to denounce horse racing for the tragic ‘sport’ that it is rather than trying to gain a couple political points and further validating it in the process. People that think horse racing is such a good idea should have their children or loved ones on a track and run them until they die, literally, and see how much fun that is to watch.

“Travers also points out that Eight Belles’ trainer, Larry Jones, returned the love. “It looks like it could be the year for the girls,” he said. “Eight Belles I’m sure would want to endorse.”

I am sitting here in awe of you people. First of all, I am willing to bet not a single person who posted a comment has watched a single horse race other than the Kentucky Derby, in their lives.
It’s spelled “FILLY”. Philly is a city that is known for our horses (remember Smarty Jones, Afleet Alex, Barbaro), but let’s use the correct spelling here shall we? Not to mention Philly is in a state where Hillary blew Obama out of the water two weeks ago.
Secondly, how DARE you people exploit a tragedy that happened yesterday? I know the connections personally and they are devastated. Eight Belles ran a huge race.
I cannot believe Matt Lauer said something that cruel, well actually I can.
There’s no “Clinton curse”, I’ve met them several times and so far I’ve survived to tell the tale.
My #1 horse, War Pass, didn’t make it to the Derby so my pick was Colonel John and now I know why he lost: Because Obama picked him. Obama doesn’t know crap about politics or horse racing.
You people make me sick. And Hillary’s Presidential big will be just fine. It will be Obama’s that will need saving thanks to his own Big Brown, Jeremiah Wright.

Seriously, all of this news and outrage over a dead horse!?!?! Where is all of the outrage for our thousands of dead and wounded soldiers????

For all of you who are so distraught over the tragic death of Eight-Belles, and who are so outraged over the comments on this blog, I offer these sobering thoughts:
Horses are among the most beautiful creatures on the face of the earth, and certainly it is TRAGEDY when even one of them has an accident that requires them to be put down. But lets not lose all sense of proportionality. This was a horse, not a human being. If you are so distraught and outraged over the death of this horse, then where is your outrage and distress over the deaths of more than 4000 American soldiers, and over 20,000 Iraqi civillian HUMAN BEINGS who have been killed over the past 4 years because Hillary Clinton was too busy to read the intelligence reports and had to show how “tough” she was by voting to authorize a war over weapons of mass destruction that never existed in the first place.
Posted by: Long Tall Texan | May 4, 2008, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm
Throughbreds should NOT be raced, the bones in their ankles are thin, but that is sadly what makes them race fast. Racing a Philly among the big guys, should be STOPPED. Anything for money, people make me sick, they love money more than there own horses!
Eight Belles is in heaven now with Barbaro and i hope the people that put her on that track miss her and realize its not all about money, what about the animal? When you love an animal, especially horses which are more intelligent than most people i know protect them and refuse to put them in harms way, you want money, work for it!
I owned a Quarter horse and he was my first love how much i miss him, he died 4 yrs ago and no other horse has my heart the way Cookie did.

I continue to mourn for the loss of Eight Belles. Why was she left alone to die why was not the owner or the trainer notified before she was killed? Are you telling me they had crap to kill her but no pain medication to stabilize her until the owner or trainer got there? And why in Hades did the jockey leave her? All of this makes no sense to me and it pisses me off. Eight Belles will go out as an icon of this time bringing new and prosperous light to filly horse racing and the Kentucky Oaks and the suggestion that filly’s should not run in the Kentucky Derby is absurd! She would have won that race but her ankles were bothering her before she hit the finish line. Oh Eight Belles the epitome of girl power your death will not be in vain and I cannot imagine what you felt dying alone and I cannot imagine what your owner or trainer or Proud Spell must be feeling right now because I am filled with grief and most of it knowing you died alone. And I will never know I guess why the jockey left you and why in the world someone did not wait for your owner or trainer to get there. I don’t know Eight Belles I don’t know. Yes, it was very sad indeed, another upsetting end to the ‘Derby’. Eight Belles was a fabulous filly and a champion, and (since the political tone wasn’t necessary, but indeed included above) methinks of ‘she’ who just -had- to include the horse as part of her campaign ‘lore’? Well, Hillary is just that old gray mare that ain’t what she used to be. If the horseshoe fits … Hmmmmm. Wonder when Hilary is going to claim Hidalgo? Eight Belles’ death was an unfortunate incident. At lease she did have the limelight while Hillary praised her and she ran tough with the boys. I don’t think it was a Clinton Curse. It just goes to show that Hillary knows a fighter when she sees one. Hillary didn’t make the bet everyone else did, but that horse surprised everyone else by coming in second. Let’s also note that Obama’s choices did not do as well. He went along with the favored choice.

If ANYTHING it should remind Hillary Clinton that you should do what you love, put your heart & soul into everything you do and stay in the race until the very END! Eight Belles raced with the biggest & baddest men in her sport and she BEAT 18 of 19 of them! If you think this is some premonition for the Democratic presidential candidate outcome you are right; Hillary should race with her head held high and in perfect stride because WOMEN CAN DO ANYTHING THEY PUT THEIR MINDS TO! Shame on this correspondent for speaking poorly of Eight Belles and shame on him for assuming that Hillary is down as well! Don’t forget…Obama’s pick to win actually came in THIRD…behind the faster filly! Keep your politics out of racing and show some respect for the dead!

Horses Run , that is how God created them, their is absolutely nothing wrong with Horse race and all the glamour that comes with it. That is life, people die, Horses are beautiful animals but nothing has durability no matter how well preserved. Belles was cool but would the story not be different if Belles had survived. Hillary is trying to add gender into this race. First she and her husband injected race into the primaries, now she is delibrately injecting gender to it. Old politics… Why can’t she ever focus on the problems America face. The last I checked she is smart talking her self past a flawed gas tax plan. So much for experience…

Posted by: Tanya Hood | May 5, 2008, 3:07 am 3:07 am
Firstly, to all those talking about their knowledge of horses and supposed expertise, a horse cannot run on once it sustains a broken ankle. The jokey did not push her on beyond the pain barrier and create a second broken ankle. The injuries would have been sustained on consecutive strides, as once a horse breaks an ankle, it can no longer run.
It is a tragic loss and my heart goes out to all Belles connections. I have followed racing for a while now, and living in Australia it is a big part of our culture and it is terrible to see something like this.

Eight Belles’ death after the Derby is a terrible tragedy.
But what would be an even worse tragedy, is if Hillary Clinton were elected President.
Posted by: Samuel Miller | May 5, 2008, 8:10 am 8:10 am
Come now… a horse breaking it’s ankles is akin to an athlete blowing out a knee. They can’t hardly stand after that, let alone be pushed to finish the race. The injuries occurred after the finish, most likely as he slowed her down. It would be perfectly reasonable to assume that she somehow had a weakened bone structure that finally gave with the added resistance of trying to slow herself.
Post-performance injuries aren’t uncommon.
It is a simple tragedy that Eight Bells died like this, but instead of attacking the sport of horseracing, go after the real problems within the sport, those owners and trainers that mistreat or dope their animals.
Posted by: Joe | May 5, 2008, 8:20 am 8:20 am
I’ve never raced, but I’ve competed in everything else on horseback, and I think this talk of animal abuse is way off base.
I personally do not go to zoos or the circus, as I feel a little queezy about it, I love animals too much.
Smacking a horses hind quarters with a crop is not cruel, it generates a small sensation and it mainly done for the noise, so the TV running scenes of the jockey cropping and some connection that the horse was run to death is wrong.
What I saw was a horse with it’s ears up, and high spirits. Talk from people saying the horse must have been hurt, or the “jockey knew” is rubbish until I hear any hard evidence.
The horse looked terrific, I’m sad she had to be put down, but I’ve seen that in jumping and hunter too.

Picking on gender was not smart. The story just amplifies some poor decisions on her part.
Posted by: Nash | May 5, 2008, 9:18 am 9:18 am
Politics aside; horses have been overbred to the point where they are at the limit of their strength/structure. On top of that, pure-bred inbreeding just amplifies the defects along with the strengths of the horse’s anatomy.
So it’s no surprise that heavily inbred oversized animals are prone to bone shattering when physically pushed to their limits. Happened before, will happen some more. When’s the last time you heard of a healthy plain pony shattering a bone on perfectly flat ground after a run?
There is some political humour (irony?) to be see in the parallels – the rare female horse in the race comes in second and dies spectacularly at the very end, while the winner is… “Big Brown”?? Hmmm.

No animal should worth more then a human life. Its fine to help them and take care of them but not worship them. Respect yes. Shed a tear for the child caught in a drive by or family killed by a drunk driver. Dont forget about them when mourning for the travasty that fell apon the valliant filly. Ironically, i did find humor in the Hilary/Eight Belles ties. Strong filly going against the favorite, “Big Brown”. Can’t we admit the obvious IRONY and the parallels between Obama (Big Brown) and Hillary (Eight Belles)?
The term “Eight bells” can also be a way of saying that a sailor’s watch is over, for instance, in his or her obituary. It’s a nautical euphemism for “finished”.
1) Hillary will stop at NOTHING to get the nomination, even if it hurts herself and her party….
(A fine filly like Eight Belles will stop at nothing even if she breaks her own legs and dies.)
2) Hillary is madly trying to run with the BOYS in a race she will do ANYTHING it takes to win — for the power and the glory and to prove she can do it no matter what the injury to herself or others.
(Eight Belles — fighting an artificial turf and a herd of massive males, tried to win over the huge and powerful Big Brown)
3) Hillary wanted everyone to bet for Eight Belles to win (not to place) and everyone who trusted her lost.
4) The filly was fatally crippled, so they euthanized her. Will this happen to Hillary’s campaign or her potential presidency? She has the will, but does Hillary have the strength to avoid going down at the finish line as well?
I personally put my money on Big Brown and guess what… I won.
I’m betting on Obama. I don’t trust Hillary or her judgment.
(All respect to women running for office — Feinstein, Thatcher, etc…. this is not about women… it’s about Hillary’s bedlamite character and lack of strength needed to finish the race and run the free world.)
Quoting Brian, a blogger on ABC:
“The parallels are a little weird and I hate even bringing them up. Big Brown had only had only run three races and people were questioning his experience. Eight Belles was the only filly in the race and comes in second.”

I have no first hand knowledge, but my guess is that horse breeders are guilty of some of the same abuses that puppy mills are. Sure, they may have an intimate understanding of these powerful creatures, but in the end they are cash cows and just as expendable. We’ve come a long way from the barbarity of the Roman Empire pitting exotic animals against each other, but still have a ways to go.
A comic on cable once said, “If I had to come back as a working animal, I’d have to pick one that does porn.” (not the little critters that get squashed though…ick!)
Posted by: LanceThruster | May 7, 2008, 2:44 pm 2:44 pm
Bottom line that we abuse animals all across the world for food, clothing and entertainment purposes. That is not how mankind should be treating animals who are defensless. Eight Belles trainer stated that the horse put her life on the line for them. Bullshit they put her life on the line. Peta is correct in demanding that the racing industry set strict regulation and be held accountable to them.
I have personally witnessed a group of pinhookers as they are called or the trailer trash of the sport of kings who buy 1,000 horses and run them to death and when they are no longer making money they send them to slaughter. Yes they still slaughter just not in this country they ship them out. Myself and my friends all ended up with some of these x racers as they were headed to slaughter. The racing industry MUST be accountable and responsible for ALL horses who come about for racing purposes. It makes me sick literally to go and watch horses race. Not only do they race them to young but there lungs also bleed when overexherted. Then they give Lasix to keep running the horse. PATHETIC. The tracks and the racing commissioner know because I told them and they did nothing to get these drunken druggies off their tracks. Now Ky has these incentives to the Quarterhorse breeding etc. and there are now five babies two doors down from me. Of course the babies are adorable but we have so many unwanted horses now that need homes. People just can’t throw away animals this way its inhumane. When God told Abraham to take his son to the altar and sacrifice the lamb he instructed that he was not to scare the animal and to make it quick and painless. Our x race horse Lead Me To Glory has many issues and they were all brought on by racing. She has a forever home. She doesn’t have to race anymore with her club foot. And she doesn’t have to make anymore babies. She is our horse that we love just because she is. Blessings to all the beautiful horses who are made to do things they don’t want to do.

What is the point of racing? What fun can there be in watching horses die? Or in fighting dogs? I am so sick of violent sports and that includes human sports like football, boxing, So men can beat each other to a pulp and people can enjoy watching AND make money off it. It all sickens me.

You all got it wrong. If your gonna base this race on color and gender, Hillary bet on a “Black” female horse. And the horse Obama bet to win came in third (Colonel John) . Obama bet on Big Brown to place ,not win. Your silly political connections are all stupid. It’s humorous on some level, but most of you are taking it way to seriously. Hillary just happens to be a white female running second , and Eight Belle’s just happened to be a Black female who placed a strong second, ran her big heart out, only to end in tragedy( like many other horses). Hillary just happened to bet on the only female horse. Big deal. It’s all pure coincidence. If you want to compare race and gender( for all you serious race and gender people out there)..,Hillary’s white, and Eight Belle’s was black . SOme connection. Pathetic. Get a life people
I’m for Obama. Because I believe he’s the best candidate. Not because of what horse he bet on,not because of his color, and not because I just happen to live right across the street from the prestigious high school he went to.
RIP Eight Belle’s . They raced you too young. Tragic.

Actually, I take that back. Hillary didn’t just happen to bet on the only female horse. She bet on Eight Belle’s because she was the only female. So what? I wanted Eight Belle’s to win in the horse race as well, because she was the only female. But I’m not for Hillary.
And aside from the horses, the horse racing industry’s shameful. Putting young horses out on the tracks to race for money and their own entertainment. My roommate just happened to be watching the race, I saw beautiful Eight Belle’s, and was rueting for her to win. And to watch her die like that..!

Eight Belles reminds me to Hillary. Both are overestimating themselves.

anyone ever think that maybe horses LIKE to race? its what they are built for, and its what they love to do. Sure there’s some things wrong with horse racing, but you get that in everything. People are jerks, you see it all the time. Anyway, my main point is…horses like to run. Let them run. It’s not abuse.

UPS sponsors Big Brown, the steroid injected horse that just won the Preakness yesterday. Hopefully, with the right amount of steroids and training, Big Brown will be able to win the triple crown and make tons of money as intended. UPS, “WHAT CAN BIG BROWN DO FOR YOU?”

Clintons and animals do not mix. Eight Bells was cursed the day Clinton picked her. She died because she was pushed beyond her limits to fulfill Clinton’s girl power fantasy. Not one Clinton crocodile tear was shed for the ill fated filly. Can’t recall her mourning when the First Pooch Buddy met his untimely demise either.

In reply to the above comments,
my family and I have been in the horse racing business for 13+ years. Yes, we have had horses break down on us.For those whom believe we are greedy, money, huge ego people that is not true. We love each racehorse in its own special way but still equally. Eight Belles could have been injured in the same way if they had run her in the Oaks. The trainer did nothing wrong but prove that the fillies are as good as the colts. For those of you who think we should not start our horses at the age of two this is for you:
Our horses are not raced at the age of two [[well my farm's horses aren't]].We use the 2year old’s year to get him/her eady for their debut race when they are a three year old. They do this because they love it and are bred to do it.Think what you like but I’ve been around racehorses my whole life.Trust me!
