Huckabee Jokes About Gun Aimed at Obama
ABC News’ Kevin Chupka Reports: Former GOP hopeful and Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is back in the news this week, making a splash when he took a hit at Senator Barack Obama during the annual National Rifle Association meeting.
Huckabee made an off-color joke during his speech in Louisville, Kentucky, when a loud bang was heard off-stage.
"That was Barack Obama," Huckabee quipped, "He Just tripped off a chair. He was getting ready to speak. Somebody aimed a gun at him and he…he dove for the floor."
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
Huckabee was always quick on his feet on the campaign trail. There was the time the lights went out in the auditorium and he suggested it was a sign from God to wrap up his speech, or the time a cell phone
rang in the audience and Huckabee suggested it might be a McCain supporter calling to tell him to leave the race. But, did this one cross the line? After all, a joke about Obama’s safety runs a fine line given that Obama accepted Secret Service protection quite early in the race for fear of violence against him.
The question remains, how might this effect Huckabee’s chances at landing the coveted slot at the bottom of the GOP ticket? Earlier in the week, a U.S. News and World Report blog quoted a top McCain fundraiser as saying Huckabee topped the list for potential GOP vice presidential candidates. After a week of buzz pertaining to just such a possibility, did Huckabee shoot himself in the foot today in front of the NRA? Perhaps only John McCain knows.
Calls to the Huckabee camp for comment were not immediately returned.

That was just stupid. If somebody aimed a gun at anybody they would duck too. I suppose somehow it was to imply Obama was scaredy-cat but as stated Huckleberry looks like an idiot. How was that appropriate or even funny? I didn’t think he was mean but there is mean-intent in it?
Posted by: Mr. Coffee | May 16, 2008, 5:54 pm 5:54 pm
You know, Huckabee is a very likeable, friendly kind of guy. Reminds me of an insurance agent.
If he wasn’t so conservative, I could easily work/vote for him.
Then he does something like this to prove what an idiot he is. We only have to look back to 1968, when we lost both Martin Luther King, Jr. and a very promising presidential candidate, Robert F. Kennedy, to think of how easily things can change. Imagine how different the 70s would have been with RFK as President!
I certainly hope Mr. Huckabee apologizes for this ASAP, and vows to never again utter such words. In the meantime, McBush should distance himself from Mr. Huckabee. Though I must admit that I’d expected to hear this kind of thing from McBush.
This has to be taken very seriously. The assassination of any political leader is something we should deplore and work hard to prevent rather than encourage as Mr. Huckabee did today.
Obama 2008 — Yes, WE CAN!!!

Huckabee should not only apologize, but also turn down any possible offer of VP slot after this preposterous remark!
Oh, and resign as pastor of a church that preaches loving one’s enemies…

It almost seems like everyone should apologize but Obama. A joke is a joke and Huckabee can make all the jokes he pleases. Didn’t the Obamabots call Hillary all kinds of names? Who was calling for apologies then? Obama is not above anything infact he has nothing on his resume other than winning caucuses and superdelegates to give him that special status. There is no need for Huckabee to apologize

I felt Huckabee was the most honest and forthright of all the Repub candidates. I really liked him. But joking around about shooting a presidential candidate, from the other party, the first black candidate in history, in front of the NRA is criminal, not to mention sinful. As a preacher, He has to know that God is not smiling.

Voter,
I really hope you’re not as stupid as your comment portends. Huckabee’s “joke” was way eerie. There’s a huge difference between harmless campaign-trail humor and what Huck said today. Furthermore, he made the entire NRA look like the bunch of redneck, socially inept retards that they’re stereotyped as being.
Posted by: nic | May 16, 2008, 6:08 pm 6:08 pm
I think it is true in a way. Obama tried to hide behind Hillary during debates, he tried to hide behind MO, he tried hiding behind Wright first and then also tried hiding behind Bill Clinton. There is no originality in this guy. Including the Hamas comment that he took from Carter. Huckabee is a lot of fun and can keep you laughing. Instead Obama’s comments about meeting Hamas should be taken more seriously.

It is never funny to joke about guns and presidential candidates. Poor taste doesn’t even begin to describe this.
To defend it is also fairly outrageous. I am frankly more disgusted with the people posting in here who think it was in any way appropriate or even remotely funny.

Mike Huckabee was making a joke. Many jokes were made about Cheney in his shooting accident, jokes were made about other candidates, I won’t repeat, but much worse than this. Late night talk shows are full of jokes about all of the candidates. If Obama wants to play the game, he needs to thicken up his skin. Why is everything fair game for the other candidates, and with Obama we can’t say anything for fear of having it “taken in the wrong context?” If he wants to be treated as everybody else, thn let’s have the media stop coddling him…..

This coming from a former Minister just shows me how crazy people can be. I wonder what it would look like if Rev. Wright said this. No wonder you did not even make it to the top. Disgusted in Illinois–
He did NOT give her the finger. He was touching his face. If you watch him, he does it all the time. In fact, I have noticed a lot of people do it. The shoulder brush, it was funny and well deserved.
And talk about not apologizing. Has Hillary ever apologized for voting to approve the war in Iraq? NO. She makes excuses. In fact, I have never heard her apologize for anything up to and including LYING about Bosnia.
You have a serious chip on your shoulder about being female.

Then the kid goes out and randomly kill a black person, and end up in some high security prison for the rest of life or this recent situation involving a teenage on “my space” being told the world would be a better place without her in it and she commits suicide. Guys! This is NOT something that happened spontaneously!
This is the NRA convention!
It was a SET-UP for Huckabee and planned in advance!
Do NOT discount the possibility that these guys are really trying to get a preacher to get some poor uneducated rural guy to get all worked up and think he will become a hero IF he actually assasinates Obama for the good of the white race!
I live in the south and let me tell this is NOT something to dismiss!
I believe the NRA will be more than likely high a reasonable probability of making a loony NRA member to actually pull it off!!
Do anyone think the NRA will actually allow a black person like Obama to ever become president in 2008! I am not black and I can tell you that this is why I believe I understand the strong sentiments of the gun-toting crowd in the south, the ones who are very very upset about someone like Obama becoming President because of a bad economy and Iraq. They really think this could happen now and would not happen 4-12 from now when the economy recovers and we pull back significantly from Iraq.
They see this as a critical time window and wish to close it fast!!

Besides there is not one person in this whole world who has not said or done something stupid at one time or another! We are all human, including Mike Huckabee! There was shocked silence. Obama has made no comment. People who have a problem with this are just decent Americans with a sense of decorum, not to mention a knowledge of our history. I am so surprised at Huckabee that I am willing to accept that it was a very bad off the cuff joke that he would never have made had he thought about it. Personally, I think it’s creepy that Michelle Obama first raised the possibility of something that I can’t even bring myself to name.
I shuddered when she said it and still can’t imagine what on earth possessed her to say it.

Sad commentary, especially coming from a supposed ‘man of cloth’. But this is also typical Republican ideology and I’m sure the NRA crowd thought it was funny. Truth of the matter is, it isn’t funny and Hucklebee owes Obama and the American people a sincere apology.

Everything has a limit –a line, and he crossed it! He should be outsted! It shows what a moron he really is and explains why he lost his campaign. What a jackass! What a sorryful illegitmate comment–says a lot about the man. He is poor taste all the way around. It was in EXTREME POOR TASTE from someone who should know better! I’m glad he said it in the open forum he did because his career should go straight into the toilet from here on out… I out to send him a roll of toilet paper.

The Messiah has been on record while he was in the Illinois Senate to be against any gun ownership. He favors banning of all handguns too.
Mr. Lecturer in Constitution is of the opinion that the Second Amendment ONLY allows a well-regulated militia (i.e. National Guards etc.) the right to carry firearms. NO individual has any right to bear arms OUTSIDE of this regulated militia.
Articles on politico.com and many other websites have laid to rest any argument to the contrary.
Posted by: Brent | May 16, 2008, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm
Let’s not get hysterical folks! Huckabee was speaking at a National Rifle Association meeting, talking about the government’s intrusion of the right to bear arms…not at a memorial service for the late, great Rev. Martin Luther King….So let’s look at this in perspective. Huckabee said, “someone AIMED a gun at him,…” NOT someone SHOT at him…” Why is it that it continues to be that when dealing with Obama everyone has to walk on eggs and be so careful what and how it is being said, but if it is the other way around, Obama can be as negative and accusitory as he wants about anyone and if questioned, Obama acts put off that he’s being questioned about his statements? I’d say that’s pretty darn arrogant (and UNFAIR).

I support Obama but this comment by Huckabee ought to be forgotten about. Jumping on off-the-cuff remarks is getting old in this election season. The candidates (or former) are covered by video cameras constantly. Give them a little slack to be human. Obama supporters, if “bittergate” was “poor choice of words”, then just learn to let this kind of stuff go. Hypersensitivity does not make one look strong.

Lou, yeah this is a free country and Huckabee can say whatever he wants to say. We just think it is bad taste and dangerous to say things like that and if he wants to redeem himself to the American people, he should be apologize. I mean even all the gun totting NRA people in the audience were silent when he finished his “joke”. I’m sure most of them were as dumbfounded as the rest of us at the stupidity of the statement. No, Huckabee doesn’t *have* to do anything he doesn’t want to do, but as a public figure and a “person of the cloth” he *should* feel some obligation to rectify this wrong.

He has joked about shooting Romney for using negative campaign tactics against him, joked about shooting those who do not vote for him, and joked about the Cheney shooting incident while firing dangerously over the heads of the press. Google it. There is something very wrong with this man who routinely jokes about shooting people. Frankly, he scares me.

I always felt that Obamas are very angry people — both him and his wife. They are angry with Americans more than anything they see in the world. Obama is inexperience, unqualified – his being a “visionary” is that he’ll govern ideas rather than people or institutions. People like that don’t learn from experience…. He is the democratice version of pseudoconservative George Bush — far left, ideology driven.

By any chance, do you write fairy tales for a living? Is that your profession? In this place called reality, Hillary Clinton is the one who has been crass, manipulative, and HIGHLY disrespectful throughout this campaign.
Also happening in reality today: A white man made a joke about a gun aimed at a black american politician. Isn’t that hilarious? I mean, after all, Obama deserves to be shot, right…
I’m assuming your just jealous that Huck’s metaphoric gun wasn’t aimed at Hillary. That way, you’d finally have a concrete example of misogyny, instead of all this implied bullshit you idiots keep cramming down are throats. People should be careful about the humor they use. Everyone likes a person with a sense of humor, but humor can also come across very very bad.
We are getting ‘sound bites’ of the candidates, so they need to realize that we don’t know them, and can’t put their sense of humor in an overall context of their personality.
When in doubt, no jokes.

Normally I would say his statement is not only tasteless but one that might provoke violence, sort of like the KKK Grand Dragon saying ‘ain’t this a good day for a hangin’”.
However, I also think the only issue people are responding to this election is white supremacy so in that vein, it’s normal American politics.
McCain is a sure winner because America still lives the dream of white supremacy.

There’s been republican jokes about lynching Obama’s wife and now jokes about his life by gunfire and he would be scared etc?
Republicans will be better off sticking to the issues.
BECAUSE:
1. Those that backed the war and Bush’s economic policies are going to lose no matter WHAT they do.
2.McCain is trying to run as a “maverick” but it’s not working very well for him because of his support of the war.
3.It’s going to be every man/woman for themselves for Republicans this fall 2008 election.
4.Get as far away from McCain and Bush/Huckabee as you can and pray for a miracle!
I don’t think it makes a difference that Republicans run with or away from this November; they have a tough road ahead of them.

I can’t believe Huckabee said this. I actually respected him as a candidate. Obama, whether people want to vote for him or not, is an amazing role model for all young men. To think that after all the great policital figures we have lost, we would joke about him getting shot. I am appalled. The Republicans are taking this election to a whole new level. It is embarrassing.

A Message From Mike Huckabee
by Mike Huckabee
During my speech at the NRA a loud noise backstage, that sounded like a chair falling, distracted the crowd and interrupted my speech. I made an off hand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama.I apologize that my comments were offensive, that was never my intention.
Posted by: kscott | May 16, 2008, 8:14 pm 8:14 pm
That ‘whoosing sound’ you just heard was Hucklebee’s VP hopes being flushed down the toilet.
Posted by: PhilBgood | May 16, 2008, 8:14 pm 8:14 pm
Gun nuts don’t need ideas if they want to shoot someone they do it. Just ask any one that lives in the projects and had drive by shootings killing their own. Don’t get too high on your horse, more blacks kill blacks than whites. I would never consider shooting anyone unless they were trying to harm anyone in my family. I’m sure Mr. Huckabee intended no harm. My father-in-law was a member of the NRA all of his life and was an avid hunter. Ease up people. Doesn’t sound like anyone is trying to unite the people. All this has done is divide the whites and blacks again. I’ll say it again, this is just the beginning.

I can’t believe people are using this news story to make further jokes or dismiss as political humor. This is very serious– and inexcusable. This is not humor– this is dangerous behavior on the part of Huckabee; to make this speech on national tv, in front of gun-carrying members of a right-wing organization during an ugly political campaign season is highly charged incitement. This is not political theater, and this remark has crossed the line. Candidate or not, this remark was made of a sitting US Senator and is against the law. If this remark were made by anyone other than Huckabee, he would have been arrested by the secret service. I also think the NRA should issue a public apology, as should Huckabee. But how can you take back something so stupid that you said ? How can you rewind the tape on something like this ?

As I said earlier, I was confident Huckabee would apologize and now he just did.

I don’t like Obama, but Huckabee was way out of line on this one, not to mention highly irresponsible when he made the statement. Guns or gunshots are not a joking matter. Huckabee should have known better.

If a Politician makes a remark like this, what type of person is he or she?
Now, if a “common citizen” makes a remark like this the NSA, FBI, and Department of Justic is bringing the person in for questioning and/or imprisonment.

Do John McCain or conservative republicans respect the moral foundation of this country? The U.S. Constitution was designed to protect the people of America from misguided government.
U.S. Constitution: Amendment I – Freedom of Religion
Right now, for the first time ever, your tax dollars are funding religious groups you may not agree with. To add insult to injury, conservative judges have ruled that taxpayers do not have a right to challenge this expenditure.
Amendment IV – Search and seizure
Under the guise of court action against abortion, Conservative republicans had John Ashcroft subpoena all the medical records of literally thousands of women just like you and members of your family. Conservative republicans are invading your privacy every day. Unfortunately for all of us, they don’t appear to care about our U.S. constitution, or by extension, the people of our great country.
Amendment X – Powers of the States and People
John McCain and conservative republicans have tried consistently to overturn States Laws. They used your tax dollars to destroy the will of the people of Oregon, and the famous “Death with Dignity” law; they lost, but undoubtedly will try again. Conservative republicans and John McCain do not respect States Rights.
Amendment VIII – Cruel and Unusual punishment
Would you rather die, or support a government which supported and sanctioned torture? The founding fathers would rather have died, and in fact they were proud to fight and die for our government: A government which specifically outlaws cruel and unusual punishment for very important reasons.
John McCain and the conservative republicans are destroying the moral foundations of our country. I urge you to keep this in mind in the coming election as we rebuild our nation together by voting Democrat.

But ALL of you indignants need to earn your indignation and express disdain for the people who say they will riot if they don’t get their way. It only takes a few idiots to ruin everything, on either side. A few NRA redneck retards, and a few Rioters. It is all the same. Rise above it and treat it like it deserves to be treated. I think it’s important to note that Huckabee’s remarks were met with silence by the NRA audience. These people were not laughing, their response seemed more like the uncomfortable silence of people in shock, who could hardly believe their own ears.

Posted by: Johnny B. Good | May 16, 2008, 8:36 pm 8:36 pm
This is a total non-issue. Not funny….but I think it was intended to be. Perhaps the huckster was trying to refer to Obama’s now famous failure of the Senates war room decision making sessions that caused the now infamous “boy” comments.
Oh well this doesn’t matter either way asfar as VP picks….unless you want to discount Obama for his gaffe about 57 states.

You haven’t heard it…must not have been said. Visit many blogs? You know what, not really worth the arguement. I live in a predominantly black city, and have heard it implied and more importantly said plainly. But it’s ok. Just more fear tactics. The is clearly no precident for such an event…things not going the way that group thought it would…rioting…so forth. Unheard of.

Diving from your chair to the ground when a gun is pointed at you? This sounds familiar. Isn’t that what the kids at NORTHERN UNIVERSITY and VIRGINIA TECH did? For anyone to joke about a gun being pointed at someone and them diving to the ground is sick. This comment has truly hurt my heart. I can’t believe potential leaders of our country talk this way.

I’ve never thought particularly bad things about Huckabee. But after watching the video, my reaction is: It’s just not funny! Can’t tell where he imagined humor…was it Obama falling off a chair? Or was it someone pointing a gun at Obama, or was it Obama diving for the floor? Reasonable action for someone with a gun pointed at them. Huckabee should stick to what he does best, advocating less freedom for American women. At least there, we KNOW he’s funny.

True, Huckabee made a “bad joke” and maybe he needs a joke writer, but it was a joke, not intending harm to anyone. On the other hand, Obama said (when he thought no one was listening, that people were clinging to their guns and religion because they were bitter over their economy.) Which is worse, a bad joke or saying something like this about the American people? I can think of some other very bad jokes that have been told by the candidates, but I will not rehash them here. Bottom line, if your every word is scrutinized, you will say something sooner or later to offend because, let’s face it, we are all human…

There are some things we joke about and the safety of our elected official is not one of them. Mike Huckabee has lost the respect and admiration that I had for him as a christian and as a patriot. Senator Obama deserves to be treated with the same honor and dignity as all other candidates.
If Mr. Huckabee had made these comments about President Bush it would be considered a crime because it could be taken as a treat to a sitting President.

Think of the parentts who have lost their kids to people who stormed inside a classroom, pointed their guns, and the kids dove from their chairs to the floor. I live in a mostly black city myself, and honestly the only ones I hear saying it really are the republicans–sorry. It is not unprecedented for blacks to riot. However, historically the trigger is usually related to the justice system slapping them in the face. I just don’t see them getting all up in arms about Obama. They are voting for him, or rather against the Clintons, but I think a lot of them see him as an Uncle Tom. Not worth rioting over.
Now what I am really afraid of happening in Denver is a bunch of crazy eyed, crew cut, braless women rioting.

Never point a firearm at yourself or others,” the International Hunter Education Association declares in its Basic Safety Rules. Later, it adds, “Never point your firearm at something you do not intend to shoot. Make sure you positively identify what you are shooting at and know what lies in front of and beyond it.”
Huckabee emerged happily from his hunt, three dead pheasants in tow, Oliphant reports. Asked for a metaphor to describe the hunt, he replied, “Don’t get in my way. This is what happens.”

Not only in bad taste, but it’s reminiscent of the early 60s and before, when the stereotype of the “colored man” was that he was so scared he shook in his boots and his teeth shook together. So without meaning to, he just reinforced the stereotype of the scared Black man.

If, Say, John Edwards joked about someone pointing a gun and shooting at McSame, you know the Republicans wouldn’t complain at all, now would they? Huck’s comments went beyond offense and straight into the relm of completely unveiled inflamatory bigotry. Nice spokesman you got there, Republicans.

People blow things out of proportion. This man apologized and I believe that he was genuine about.
Come on…he made the joke after he heard a chair fall…then he added the gun thing in because he was talking to members of the NRA.
Poor thing to do, but in no way did he mean to hurt anyone’s feelings or to come off as disrespectful.
We all say stupid things sometimes.

Tuyet, if any party has been racist its been the Democratic party. The race game has been in play since…hmmm…the good old days of the south? After all, one of the good old boys by the name of Senator Byrd was himself a member of the KKK and the democrats of all race just love the man…I guess you can say and do whatever you want if you are a democrat without having to apologize for anything…right, Obama? Right, Howard Dean? Democrats are the biggest liars and hypocrites around and they will NEVER get my vote.

We all say stupid things on occasion that we regret, and usually the minute the stupidity leaves our mouths we apologize. I thought Huck was a genuinely nice guy, but he should have IMMEDIATELY realized the idiocy of his joke and apologized on the spot. The fact that he didn’t tells me he knew exactly what he was saying and knew he had an appreciative audience. Let’s remember he was talking to the loonies who insist that guns don’t kill people.
I can’t wait to see the Obama family move into the White House and restore decency, honor and integrity to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Get on board or get out of the way – America is no longer going to be held hostage by a bunch of trigger-happy Neocons.
I have a dream – of Bush, Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Gonzales standing trial for crimes against humanity. The long national nightmare known as the Bush administration is about to come to an end. Praise the Lord for that.

This is a true story, and at the time I was utterly taken aback. My boyfriend, who is an awesome African American, said to me the other day he hoped Barack was not elected President. I was so in shock, I could barely think to ask why he would say such a thing. He replied, “Because, somebody will kill him!” I was simply stunned, but when the real possibility of what he had said began to sunk in, I began to cry. I could only mouth the words that my heart hoped by everything holy he was wrong, tho’ I somehow knew he knew of what he spoke.
May God help us all. I am from Arkansas, and not everybody here is so demented, uneducated, shoot-from-the-hip, barefoot, toothless hillbillies. Some of us actually have understanding, compassion, knowledge, and a kinship with our fellow Americans. Huckabee has disgraced himself entirely. His apology, only after it was pointed out to him he must, rings so hollow it is useless and meaningless.

Mr. Huckabee owes Sen. Obama a huge apology,
and also all the citizens of this country who remember the Kennedys and MLK,Jr.
This reflects very poorly on the current Republican Party.
It is not at all funny and Mr. Huckabee should have known better.

In my experience, no one takes guns more seriously than the NRA. I’ll bet his not-so-funny joke dropped like a dud bomb and lay on the floor fizzing pitifully. It would be hard to retract a bad joke right away, you have to just move on & forgive yourself. He probably will apologize, since everybody seems to be apologizing for anything & everything this supersensitive election year.

evagal, you keep worrying about Bill Ayers and the Rev. Wright, just like Sean Hannity says. While you’re getting worked up about a few sermons and relationship that exists solely in Hannity’s warped mind, more soldiers came home in a box from Iraq, the price of gas crept up again, and the Saudis basically told Georgie Boy to go pound sand, which means you’re going to pay even more to fill up that big gas-guzzling SUV you drive. Like I said, thank GOD this nightmare is about to come to an end.

Unfortunately as a black man I would guess that Barack has extra risks from some of the famous white supremacist, hate and Nazi parties out there in the US.
Isn’t it a crime to make threats against the life of the president – can’t Huckleberry think in just how poor taste that is?
It’s in the same category as the story about the journalist who asked Mrs. Kennedy, “other than that what did you think of Dallas”.

That was no “Joke”. Watching the video, it is obvious that Huckabee’s
response was scripted and planned, as was the backstage noise.
Huckabee was simply preforming for his KKK supporters. He is now a big man back home.
If I were a reporter, I would follow this story. An interview with the stage hand that created the noise would make an interesting followup story.

Huckabee was just kidding, and probably improvising as he went along. It was indeed stupid, but he probably did not realize how awful it was until after he said it and it got played back a thousand times for him. We all say stupid things and put our “foot in our mouths”, such was the case here, I believe. I do not think he meant it the way it sounded.

Governor Mike Huckabee’s joking comment about Barack Obama falling off a chair because someone aimed a gun at is absolutely horrible.
Someone who even mentions someone is pointing a gun at a presidential candidate is asking for serious problems. And this is considered a joke?
Why would a former Presidential Candidate even mention this. We have had Presidents and Presidential Candidate shot and killed. We have many seriously mentally ill people in this country. They could take suggestion seriously and act.
No matter how unintentional this joke, this was outrageous and very serious. Anyone else would have been arrested by secret service and intensely investigated. And possible prosecution.

To joke about someone pointing a gun and shooting Barrak Obama is absolutely despicable…Huckabee’s subsconscious mind surfaced (Freuidian slip) to reveal this horrible image. Coming from a white minister tells alot about his core beliefs. An immediate apology to Obama and his family is in order. Posted by: Peter Jensen | May 16, 2008, 11:22 pm 11:22 pm
I can’t believe how people don’t understand what just happened here.
Two things just happened:
1. Mike Huckabee THREATENED a presumptive presidential candidate. We need a Secret Service investigation of this incident. That investigation needs to determine whether this remark was pre-planned, or truly extemporaneous. If it really was extemporaneous, then it can be excused as a Freudian slip. If it was pre-planned, then everyone who was involved in the planning needs to be identified. I believe it is a federal offense to threaten political figures, and anyone involved in such a conspiracy should be vigorously prosecuted.
2. The crowd at the NRA convention didn’t laugh or cheer in response to the threatening remarks. That’s good. However, they didn’t boo or shout Huckabee down, either. And that’s very sad. Every American conservative should look within their own heart, and ask their own conscience, what would they have done if they were in that crowd? Because any true American patriot would be angry about an attempt to use the threat of assassination as a political tool. Allowing such tactics in our political system means accepting violence as a campaign tool, and ultimately a murderer-take-all system. Whichever side has the best assassins is a lousy way to pick a tyrant.

There’s nothing funny about the potential for Barack Obama, who stands a very real chance of becoming the democratic nominee, to be the target of an assassination attempt — an attempt that would no doubt arise from the very faction that supports the “God and Guns” republicans. The republicans have purposefully advanced lies about Obama’s “ties” to terrorists and muslims, in a deliberate attempt to fuel the kind of paranoia that gives rise to hate crimes. The truth is, I think they all hope that one of their crazed followers takes the hint.

The comments of many of the anti-Obama posters here strike me as being far worse than the tasteless and stupid remark by Huckabee. As the campaign to elevate gay marriage to a national threat greater than disastrous wars, a broken economy, a health care crisis, rising food and gas prices, Monica Lewinsky, and on and on, illustrates, the Republican Party has nothing left to offer but hate and ignorance. This party that believes in torture but not in evolution has no place in the modern world. Time to outlaw it, as the Germans did with the Nazi Party. We can’t afford to take the risk of tolerating it any further.

I personally would prefer he was the republican nominee rather than McCain but that’s not how the chips played out. Theyve tried the muslim ties, attacking his wife, calling him an elitist, hes not patriotic enough like repubs(whatever that means) and tried to use his pastor as political fodder. I don’t see the Wright comparison here, but since someone brought it up Wright never talked about shooting someone so you could argue this is worse than anything he said. Also, I like that Bush and Karl Rove are taking shots at Obama. If this turns into Bush-Rove-McCain-Limbaugh against Obama instead of just Obama against McCain Obama will win. McCain will distance himself from Bush and Karl Rove if he is smart because Americans are sick to death of them and any connection to them will hurt McCain.

This is not funny. Period. All you posters who try and attack Obama on this issue or defend Huckabee are seriously sick and should be ashamed of yourselves. America has lost too many amazing leaders because of an assassins bullet. Let us not forget that the father of the GOP, Abraham Lincoln, was killed by a man with a gun. No American, Republican or Democrat or whatever laughs when one of our leaders falls victim to an assassins bullet. Disgusting.

Jason: i think you are right. this is a blessing in disguise for barack. this entire issue has energized the democratic party. pelosi, dean, kerry, biden all of them came out in full force and hillary did as well. this works in opposition to mccain because he is forced to either side with the worst president and administration in modern history which kinda crumbles that maverick stuff or say nothing. if he distances himself he kinda loses some of the republican base

Huckabee’s off-hand remark was not humorous. He and his supporters have NEVER given Hilary and Bill Clinton and Al Gore the benefit of the doubt when they have said their comments were not meant to offend or disparage, but have impugned their motives.
He is a man of the cloth who is willing to speak and throw excrement for a laugh.
May he live to bury his own children. May he and his wife suffer from starvation so great that they are forced to eat the afterbirth of her miscarriages to survive. May his mind and body be as crippled as your soul. May sulphurous fumes fill the air he breathes to the end of his days. (that’s what brimstone is folks) And may all memory of his life be expunged from the Earth.

I am sure Huck would have to be feeling ashamed of what he said. It was a joke that bombed. The audience was even quiet and that really came back to Huck (so, he has been punished enough, in my eyes).
You guys have to face it..even with the repubs upset with Mac, they will vote against Obama and the Clinton rehash!

Huckabee or whatever his name is should remember as a pastor that “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks…” says the holy scripture. If anything happens to Obama, now we know who will be responsible.
God is a lover of people, and so must be those who preach him.We use to know that he hates immigrants, now we know he hates Obama too.
As a preacher, let me say this; No weapon formed against Obama shall prosper. And every tongue that rises up against him shall be condemned. – AMEN!

Look–I’m an Obama supporter and an African-American. Let’s take a step back here–I don’t believe Huckabee is a racist, nor do I believe this was a threat or an attempt to incite violence against Sen. Obama.
With that being said, I do think it was a poor attempt at humor that, even if better articulated, would have still fallen flat and should not be well received with respect to any of the candidates, whom are all sitting elected officials.
And while I appreciate rebuffing hypersensitivity during this process, I would also like to think that any American with a remote sense of decency would understand the residual poor taste of the joke and the insensitivity to Sen. Obama’s family, particularly his 2 small children, who shouldn’t ever be privy to the prospect of someone shooting their father because of his political endeavors.

I agree it wasn’t a racist comment.
It was however said in front of the NRA, John McaCain, and Karl Rove, an event sponsored by the NRA for political gain by both John McCain and the NRA. It is my believe that all parties need make clear their stance on this.
It is one thing for the NRA to lobby for the second amendment, and another to lobby for a political party. They are as responsible for the direction this country has taken as the party they support. It is time they answer for their choices also

trueblog – given the series of gaffes and otherwise just plain ignorant statements that Bush and McCain continue to make on national security and foreign policy statements, I got to say this stuff with Huckabee is just a distraction.
In fact… maybe a planned distraction. Maybe the GOP recognized it was wading blindly into forcing independents to see Republicans have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to national security. So, Huckabee goes into assassination-joke-distraction mode.
Hmmm.

Huckabee, showed poor judgement in his commnet about someone aiming a gun at Obama. Guns require that people take responsibility and are not reckless. Huckabee’s comment seems to be racist, insesituve, reckless and inappropriate. Most people, whether they support the NRA or not believe in responsible and safe use of guns. What a negative picture Huckabee painted suggesting that a fellow American is diving to the floor-due to gun fire-it makes noo sense, except as a mean spirited put down or threat.

I agree with a comment here, Mccain has to reject and renounce these comments same with Bush, Karl Rove and all the individuals in that meeting. Know Bush was not in the meeting, but his comments triggered off all these after effects and at the end he went to Saudi Arabia to plead for more oil. How pathetic? The President of the United States pleading for oil. Same foreign policies Mccain wants to follow.

Do you have a dog?
Do you love your dog?
What if your dog gets rabies?
Would you still love your dog?
Would you be able to show your love to your dog with rabies?
I did, one time, and it bit me on the eye when I was three years old and I remember everything that happened including the 49 shots that I got.
Just because people get rabies, so to speak, doesn’t mean that God doesn’t love them. Love, at that point, is irrelevant. God didn’t change. The people have changed and have turned against the hand that feeds them. Their deeds become futile. It is their deeds that they are condemned for. They are not condemned because God hates them. Everyone will be judged according to their deeds. God’s loving deeds abide forever.
That is what “abide in my love” is all about. It is not that God’s love runs out. It is that people don’t take the opportunity to love God in return so that their deeds count. God hates their deeds and they are what they do but that is not God’s fault. God is not willing that any should perish. God hates to see people perish by their own corrupt deeds. That is what His word and the good news is all about, to save people from their evil deeds that they do which condemn them.
We are what we do and we cannot say that God does not love people. If we do, we will be judged for misrepresenting the truth of God’s love for us. God so loved the world and there is no greater love and He died not only for us but for the whole world. This is a fact.
God loves everyone the same initially and since the judgement hasn’t come (for us) yet, God is still loving everyone “initially” the same. He actually says that if a righteous man stops being righteous, that man will be judged but if an unrighteous man stops being unrighteous, that man will be saved. The trumpet hasn’t sounded yet so God is still loving everyone the same (apart from the deeds that they do).
If you want to say something, say that salvation is through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. That is how to abide in God’s love by doing all the right things receiving all the grace that God is able to give for us to be able to do all of the right things.
Don’t say that God doesn’t love people because that is not God’s word. God’s word says that God so loved the world. It is people that do not love. You can’t hold God accountable for being a hypocrite. It is not His fault because He has done everything that can be done for us and His Holy Spirit is STILL convicting people of sin righteousness and judgement. If there is any blame for not loving, we are the ones to blame for not speaking of His love.
Why don’t you look up “according to their deeds”. This means that God cannot be blamed for not loving. He did and does love more than anyone ever has or will ever do and His Holy Spirit still speaks to everyone about Jesus’ love for us.

Huckabee It wasn’t funny when we lost JFK, or Robert K Jr.,or MLK, each had a message the nation needed to hear & they were snuffed out before their time by hate filled people who thought killing them would silence their message. It didn’t stop their ideals from moving on through many others, but it affected many when they were murdered. If Huckabee truly believes in God, & wants to be an example to others he will apologize. I am going to support Senator Obama all the way to the White House. Its election time and the truth of the matter is republicans are running scared. Americans have lost their lives and Washington is responsible. Ask Pat Tillman’s mother what she thinks of the war in Iraq? Hundreds of soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq were disposed of in a pet cemetery. Veterans come home after risking their lives for us to remain safe and they are turned away to starve. CHANGE is exactly what we need. Barack Obama is going to turn things around with his theme of CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN. So naturally the republicans are making a move and to me that is another reason to end political pandering like this. Enough nasty politics it’s time for the human race to look towards a better future for all man kind and to demand that our country represents integrity above all. VOTE OBAMA 2008

The Democractic party needs no therapy. It is the gun-totting republicans that messed up this country that need all the therapies you can think of. Today the President was begging for oil from Saudi rebels. How pathetic? and you are saying we have had the best foreign policies. it is only a republican that will not feel the pains the nation is going through. Rich gun-totting bigots.

To “carlyonsue is a moron”: I didn’t say that Obama is a closet muslim and that this is a conspiracy for muslims to take over the world. DO NOT SAY THAT I SAID SOMETHING THAT I DIDN’T SAY! I know that he isn’t a muslim. I said that I don’t trust him. Anyone with any common sense did not believe him when he said that he didn’t know what his preacher preached after listening to his sermons for 20 years! If he will lie about that he will lie about other things too!

This is the worst kind of racism – no posturing, just a southern good ol’ boy making a joke about shooting a black man. Probably comes to him as naturally as breathing.
Just like his son thinking nothing of hanging and stoning a poor stray dog to death. Or Huck covering it up as governor by firing the prosecutor who wanted to pursue the case agains the son.
Huck understands southern gentility, but it all on the surface…the core is rotten.

I actually thought Huckabee was kinda intelligent–it was unlikely that I would have voted for him but he was better than Romney. But sheesh he seems like an idiot who can’t make a joke.

Some people are trying to bring Reverend Wright into this? Did he joke about pointing guns on mccain or bush? or even on Mike Huckabee? So why did Huckabee joke about such? I think it was even pre-planned? watch the video again. Infact the Republican party are full of Bigots.

If Obama makes silly comments and puts himself to a position like retarded, than ofcourse people will start taking him not serious! And start making jokes with him!
Obama boy called John McCain naive on national security and foregign policy! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Obama boy can not even find his own words!
Naive was Hill’s comment on Obama boy!
he looks really down and not presidential at all. I would not even give the cashier of my candy store to him to run forget about presidency!

Yes Mccain is naive. It is only someone that is naive that will sit in a meeting with gun-killing individuals and they joke and laugh about pointing guns on their colleague. Infact, if it was blacks that did such, they would probably be cooling their heads in jail now. Republicans my a…r….s…e

Huckabee should be held responsible for anything that happens to Obama. Huck is a loud mouth bully. Where is the joke in such a horrible mean innuendo? He is not even fit to be a dog catcher much less a potus. Why can’t republicans ever have leaders that speak well and not always sound like 2nd grade ignorant bullies? There are some very good well educated repubs, why are ones living in the past always allowed in the forefront. we currently have a potus who cannot even articulate a simple thought into a micro phone. it is embarrassing.

unbelievable. what huckabee said should be considered the equivalent of shouting ‘fire’ in a crowded theatre. free speech does not include a suggested threat on anyone, and definitely not against a candidate for president. huckabee knew exactly what he was doing, planting an outrageous and despicable thought into the tiny brain of one of the morons out there, such as typified by the mentality of many of the people posting on this story. maybe they’re too young or stupid to realize that our collective national violence against leaders is a direct assault on our democracy, where ballots and not bullets are supposed to rule. mortifyingly disgusting.
huchabee is a two faced stooge who should be defrocked. friendy, like an insurance salesman? he smells like a mortician to me.

faith and everyone else: Sadly there is a possibility that something awful could happen to Obama…there was a possibility that something could (and did) happen to Reagan.
Likewise, there was a possibility that something could happen to Martin Luther King…but if they had lived their lives in fear and not been given the opportunity to live fully…the world would be at a loss.
If Obama doesn’t run…then the next black person who decides to run (and has a chance of winning) will face the exact same threat.
Posted by: Justme | May 17, 2008, 2:43 am 2:43 am
Huckafluke is just another passe politican lambasting at another for the sole purpose of pandering to an ultrs-conservative voting block. It is easy to recognize the depths of insipid negativity seen on all sides.
And, lest we should forget, there are quite a few extremely critical political issues which require our full election attention, such as, foreign wars; GNP; fair wages; immigration; environmentalism; fuel costs, food prices, Social Security; health care; EDUCATION… and so on. Focusing on divisive political gaffes is the media’s method of deflecting attention away from what really affects everyone.
2008 is turning out to be one of the worst presidential elections in the history of the United States of America!

Huck, you’ve proven to be as stupid as the sound of your name. You’ve also proven, you and your good ole buddy, Cheney, why the democrats want to enforce strict gun laws. You and your redneck buddies find shooting and killing innocent people funny huh? You’ve just proven what we critical thinkers have always none about the religious right: They never practice what they preach, and have proven themselves to be false prophets! Did you ever stop to think what Jesus would think about your comment! And Americans thought Rev. Wright was a quack!!!

I liked Huckabee, hated his positions and would never vote for him but I would think this stupid remark pretty much ruled out his getting a nod on the McCain ticket. What he said was tacky,
not funny and he should no better and I’m not even an Obama supporter.
Posted by: alpaig | May 17, 2008, 3:10 am 3:10 am
I AM an Obama supporter and although I have my differences with Hillary Clinton and her husband Bill, I would NEVER, EVER say something about them like this. In fact, I am NO supporter of the current president, but I wouldn’t even use this joke on HIM. I am not that old, but I’ve read about the people who were leaders who have been slain, and almost assassinated, (Ronald Reagan) and the joke Huckabee told was NOT funny IMHO.
Posted by: Tammi_J | May 17, 2008, 3:19 am 3:19 am
Yeah, Huckabee did kinda say a bad thing. It has to do with sensitivity. If Huckabee had more than a few black friends, I am sure that he would have never said anything like that.
It was in very bad taste as were some of his other “religious” jokes. We really do have to think through the things that we say. It is like getting all of the air out of the light bulb so the filament won’t burn out when lit.
We need to get all of the bad things out of us before being a light. It is not so easy if you were raised that way.

You folks who don’t understand the humor are ignorant of the situation. It’s not an assassination threat, and it’s not racist. This joke was funny because the NRA meeting includes a huge gun show. Everybody there had several thousand guns “pointed at them” during the course of the day, as the visitors examined the wares. Only the most timid of rabbits would be “hitting the floor” by the time of the speech. We don’t know much about Obama in this respect except that he was the first candidate to call for SS protection, so he MIGHT be a coward. Or maybe he’s just smart to call for such protection. We do know Obama’s a liar; look at the image he portrays about his “conservative Kansas mother” and compare that to her reality as a brilliant Marxist advocate and firebrand child of the ’60s. The reality is in its way far more impressive than the staid farm-girl image Obama tries to give. By dismissing her cause and her intensity, he disrespects his own mother. Furthermore, he seemingly won’t give a straight answer as to what he wants to do about any issue, except to say “talk about it and apply common-sense restrictions”. I don’t like the other candidates much either, but at least they have opinions one can make judgements on.

And now we know the true nature of Huckabee’s “Christianity.” Politics is more important than God’s commandments to him. This is a minister of the Gospel? Can anyone imagine President Carter ever saying such a thing?

mc-more-war doesn’t stand a chance in the fall. He’s an adulterer, a flip-flopper, way too OLD, and he’s already losing it. Did anyone see him pandering to the NRA? Why won’t his wife release her tax forms?…hmmmmm.

If Huckabee is all about God, how could something even “accidently” slip out of his mouth? It wasn’t even a little bit funny and to joke about something that deadly shows Huckabee is no different or better than anyone else. Pray to God, go to church, it doesn’t matter. The Huckabee types hide behind God and actually are nastier than everyone else.

These Republicans will stoop even lower as we get closer to the election. They will use all their surrogates to spew venom, racism, and flat out lies against Obama. They talk so much about McCain’s experience…WHAT EXPERIENCE??? This guy is part and parcel of why we are in the mess we are in today in Iraq, in the Middle East, and everywhere else. As for the economy, McCain’s economy is doing quite well, much, much better than most Americans. After all, McCain except for being on the taxpayer’s payroll all his life, he has no idea what it is to lose his job, house, paying for essentials like food, fuels, or health care. This man has been taken care of all his life from A to Z. Now with his very wealthy wife, he’s assured the most comfortable lifestyle money can buy. He doesn’t represent the average American any more than the world’s richest man.

There was a time in this country when no one would have even dared to consider something like this to be a “joke”, no matter what their political leanings or style of humor might be. It’s called a sense of common decency. But I guess the so-called preacher man somehow missed that. Wonder what all you Huckabee apologists would have to say if Obama had made the same “joke” about anyone else. You’d be ranting, raving and foaming at the mouth. When the shoe is on the other foot, it doesn’t feel very good, does it?

You leave. The world is against you. Obama will have to work overtime undoing all you and your terrorist pals have done.

The irony of this country is that even though McCain is just like Bush, and will drive this country into the ground exactly like Bush has. We would rather vote for McCain (McBush) over Obama, JUST BECAUSE Obama is black. Had Obama been white, he’d of probably already won the general election by now, however due to his race people find reasons to dislike him. Kudos!! Let’s nominate another Republican destroyer to ruin our great country! At this rate will be third world like those African countries we see on TV.

I know he made a bad joke but I belive Obama made many enemies by being a member of Rev wright’s church!
he still is subscribed to his church and new pastor Moss is as nad as Wright!
He has terrorist friends such as Bill Ayers, Khalidi, Hady,
Hamas endorsed him and he has a campaign office in Gaza run by Hamas!
don’t you think, he is builing so much hate against himself!
it has nothing to his race!
I wish Powell would run for president, i would have considered him to vote for.
Finally, what Huckabe said brings question marks into people’s minds!
Are we ready yet for a man who is so different than the rest of us?

I won’t!
I’d rather a ressesion than giving the pleassure of the White House to that hateful anti white and un American woman named Michelle!
I’d rather 4 more years of war, than seeing a man who belives Rev wright for 20 years, in the White House!

Think the Democrats should unite. If Hilary does not come out victorious, then the next best thing is Obama.Never Mccain. He may not even finish his term. His ideas are bush-like. Maybe gas price will get to $10 per gallon. Anybody still promoting the war in Iraq does not wish well for America. America was involved in the Iran-Iraq war that went on for 8 years but our sons and daughters were not physically involved. The Gulf War did not last for a month and that cost us only $2 billion but this one has already cost us $800 billion. That money would have started a bio-diesel plant or used to build at least 6-10 refineries. Yet Mccain wants to continue.

Mccain in 20081
Hillary in 2012!
I work at Hillary campaign and I receive thousands of calls everyday, telling me they will NOT vote for Obama!
Hillary will urge everyone to vote for Obama but she can’t make their minds chaned!

Bush set the tone with his unprecedented attack from overseas while addressing a foreign Government.
There is one candidate remaining who has stayed above it & taken a Presidential tone in all of his dealings so far. We all know who that is… When these People show their true colors there is very little shock & outrage any more because we’ve been completely & utterly desensitized.
We’ve already seen it all. The MSM has no problem bringing US Wright 24/7 for 6 weeks straight but something like this & the continued attacks from the GOP go continually under reported.
Obama gets hit for a “sweetie” comment While a prominant GOP candidate makes a joke about an assasination attempt on Obama & it passes in an instant. Can you even imagine the backlash if Obama made a similar coment in reverse???
I hope we’re paying attention & learning from all this…

That people can get more worked up about sermons from Rev. Wright than they do about the atrocities committed by the Bush administration tells you exactly how dumbed down and stupid America has become. And they call Obama supporters Kool-Aid drinkers?

But then again, they are the reasons why we are in the mess we are in today, a foriegn policy built on lies and deciet, an economy that is framed to benefit the wealthy and corporations, and a vision of more of the same. No wonder real working class Americans have so much misery here at home and why we are dispised all around the world. It is astounding that Huckabee is so insensitive. Some nut may assume that Huckabee’s comment gives him or her license to assume it is open season on on Obama. If anything similar to this happens to Obama, we will all hold Huckabee accountable. It is amazing that anyone could be so insensitive. I could have easily voted for Huckabee before his statement that encouraged open season on Obama. Amazing that Huckabee is so dull that he just does not get it. Mentioning pointing a gun and a black man’s name in the same sentence smacks of total disregard for the safety and welfare and indeed the very life of the black person.

I would also like to say to “Voter” and “Amy”, your bigotry or true colors are shining through. And I thank Girgadis for his comments. They were to the point and could not have been better expressed. “Off color”? Are you trying to make this into a ‘color’ statement? I see nothing ‘off color’ about the comment. Let’s put this thing in perspective, he was speaking to the National Rifle Association! Huckabee has a sense of humor, which is in his favor as far as I’m concerned. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen a politician with one!
Posted by: Dora | May 17, 2008, 6:10 pm 6:10 pm
If Huckabee’s intent was humor due to speaking before the NRA why didn’t he make the “joke” aimed at Hillary? For anyone to attempt to backpaddle now and say, “Oh! Huckabee meant something else. His words were taken out of text.” That’s lame. Since both Barak Obama and his wife, Michelle, have had every word they used dissected, analyzed and then attacked.

Those of you who think it was just a joke probably are too young to have lived through the national grief that is experienced when any public figure is assasinated.
What Huckabee probably meant was, from an NRA point of view, if Obama had a gun too, he would not need to duck. So this is who you REALLY are, Huckabee, you almost had us fooled, you are no more than another neocon wannabee nut pretending to be a conservative. You are less than a piece of horse pucky.
Your remark was incredibly stupid and dangerous and you should remove yourself from the public stage, no VP for you. BOO, Huckabee, BOO.
And if Obama did gesture to HRC, GOOD FOR HIM, that is NOTHING compared to what that evil, powerlusting BI**CH and her nasty husband have done to Obama during this campaign.

It amazes me each and every day just how stupid we are as a society. This story and the comments here just proves that point.
We have people referring to Huckabee as Huckleberry and other creative names because I guess that is how they were raised. Let’s insult people by changing their name around.
Someone else said Huckabee should resign from being pastor when in fact, he has not been a pastor for more than 12 years. Funny though, that I never hear the same remarks about Romney who was a Bishop of the Mormon faith. Why not refer to Mitt Romney as Bishop Romney? Seems fair to me.
Someone else said Huckabee should apologize, which he has already done at least twice publicly and probably will for a third time tomorrow on Meet the Press.
I am ashamed that we as a people are not better informed of the whole truth and not just some agenda put forth by one or two media sources. Who am I kidding, all media sources have their own agendas which far out-weigh the truth.

Well said. Sad how we cannot disagree w/o anger. Please wake up. We need to be worried about education, healthcare, and scrutinizing our elected officials for the real harm that they do. This man made an off color remark. He may really feel hatred or violence toward Obama or he may have just made a terrible attempt at humor. This incident was probably not a fortuitous lapse of language. Obama’s campaign is engineering a quiet revolution, the transfer of power to the people of America, the restoral of a clean slated democracy. Panic within the Nation’s incumbent power systems is now mounting. Obama is in great danger. Sadly it has all been seen before. I pray for him everyday and I am not a pastor.

As my nose-thumbing exit was deleted by ABC, I’ve decided to try and have a few last words.
Joseph, I agree totally that the American people are becoming stupid, ill-informed and easily led, and that the insults and slurs aimed at candidates for our highest office are ultimately destructive. You refer to the use of “Huckleberry” and similar epithets, but you seem to ignore the stream of lies, slanders and disinformation that are directed at Barack Obama in these remarks. Liberals as a historical rule have not indulged in the type of tactics refined by Karl Rove and his spiritual mentors (and yes, I was a young person during the Nixon years and I remember the way that got real personal, but there was just as much vituperation directed at President Johnson). But Swift Boats have left a very bad taste in the mouths of many liberals. A lot of us are determined to respond with whatever it takes to punish those engaging in similar tactics this time around. We don’t have enough time left to acquiesce further efforts to turn America into a sewer. It’s got to stop, even if it means crucifying a few political operatives. Zero tolerance.
You also offer the standard lament about media bias (although I have to wonder where you got your news about Hucklebee making an apology – did you call the man? I got it from ABC). You may be surprised to find that many liberals agree with you. However, we see the major media – all of it – as having big business / big government bias (which means mostly Republican). If the news operations hadn’t been such lapdogs for the Bush Administration, some of its lawlessness and disastrous policies might have been averted. We don’t consider the media to be friends of ours.

I am a white republican I go to church every sunday and I have closely watched this man give many tasteless jokes. Because he is a preacher everyone thinks he is a saint. When he backed south carolina for their hate filled fight to keep the confederate flag waving at the state capitol and told anyone who did back this that he “would tell them what they could do with his flag pole…” isn’t very christian sounding to me. I wasn’t thrilled about mccain but if huckabee is his vp I don’t think I will even show up to vote for the first time ever…

Correction: who did “NOT” back the confederate flag…

Every joke has meaning and sometimes deep seated meanness behind it. H. was both pandering and proliferating in his comments. He pandered to his audience and proliferated a thought that it was a joke to aim a gun at Obama. The pandering, in a sense, was excusable given the fundamental beliefs of his audience that guns are for everyone, including the terrorists to have and use as a USA birth right. The proliferating is inexcusable. H. is done as a VP candidate, especially since McCain failed to renounce and denounce the remark and the person who said it immediately.

I just noticed that in one of my posts I applauded the comments of a “Sharon”, who had just given a sincere, detailed and rational critique of the dangers of Huckabee’s gun joke. ABC seems to have deleted this post for some bizarre reason (there was nothing at all offensive about its tone).
The only Sharon remaining in these comments appears to be a racist sociopath who is urging that not only Obama but several others be shot (for good measure). I would like it to be left on the record (ABC!) that this wasn’t “my” Sharon. Her views are about as abhorent, inhuman and un-American as anything I’ve seen here.

“pt”, you’re in the same position as I am.
I wonder if “our” Sharon’s post was deleted or hacked? This puts everyone who has commented on another’s post at risk.

I am so glad Huckabee was not nominated. His joke is a red flag, like the earlier one where he advises supporters to let the air out of the tires of a neighbor who doesn’t intend to vote for him.

SOOOOO NOT FUNNY.
So bigoted and insane when one recalls how Unfunny a political assassination is.
Huckabee just screwed hsi chance to be VP.
Obama, yes we CAN.

It has been interesting to read all of the post. I must admit that it surprises me to hear in 2008 that some people aren”t alarmed by H comments. It is pretty insensitive and scary. Life is precious and valuable. We all have people who love us. H comments may plant a seed in a person’s head to do something; We know the probability is great. Remember MLK, JKennedy, RKennedy.

It’s amazing how this election is bringing out the true hatred and prejudices of these appointed officials and people placed in high regards. That comment was no where near being humorous…how would he or his family feel about someone commenting a gunman pointing a gun/attempting to assassinate him etc.? So what is he insinuating? This really burns me up.. This demonstrates this guys character (not in the privacy of his home), but publicly in front of others of political power, fellow Americans, and his supporters. What an idiot!!

THERES NO JOKE THAT FUNNY WHEN IT HAS TO DO W/ GUNS…WITH ALL THE SCHOOLS SHOOTING WE HAVE EXPERIENCED IN THE PAST FEW YEARS, BUT HIM BEING A MAN GOD THERES THINGS YOU JOKE ABOUT & SOME NOT.WOULD HE HAVE MADE A JOKE CONCERNING OUR FATHER GOD, GIVING THE LIFE OF HIS ONLY SON FOR HIM….

And the NRA thinks this guy is a gun enthusiast. He knows nothing about gun ownership, real hunters would never have a thread like that cross their mind.
If he has a NRA card, take it away from him.

Hey, Disgusted, I’m a woman and I don’t need an apology.
And “As far as I know” Hillary? Nothing can be said about her constant slams.
But this Huckabee “joke” was tasteless and brought back the horrible ’60s for me.
Very sad times.

It so sad to see people who find it funny or okay for Huckabee to display this behavior. For all that, think this is acceptable, it shows your lack of value on African American’s lives.
Have not enough political leaders who challenged a change in the traditional system lost their lives?
If you are not conscientious or have never experienced racism/discrimination you probably would not understand!
This is sickening!

And Huckaby, a minister, calls himself a Christian????? Such talk about someone being shot is way out of line. He needs to ask forgiveness!

He should not have said that, It’s just shameful. Sometimes what people say, without thinking, is truly what they believe and or feel. so i think he just excposed himself, for what he is. Shameful, Shameful “2008, Shameful.

I’m black and I know that Huck just made a mistake. He just made a mistake about the front runner in the Democratic party and then realized the implications of what he said. If something like this can ruin his shot at VP, then it’s just a sign of how delicate this whole presidential race is.

I want you guys to notice something. It’s usually white people and the white media who jump on every ill-conceived comment that everyone makes but everyone blames black people for being too sensitive. This makes it hard when we actually do feel that we’ve been wronged. But…this is a free country. Everyone proceed.

I was appalled and disgusted by Huckabee’s thoughtless comments. They were neither funny nor appropriate. To make a joke about a Presidential candidate being shot at, particularly one that has received threats, is tastelss and crass. I thought Huckabee had more class.

How is it possible that people accept the pathetic fig leaf Huckleberry has pasted on his boner? That was not a joke. That was not spontaneous. Watch the video and observe the timing of his delivery. That was scripted, which transforms a toxic “joke” into a shabby premeditated death threat.
Huckleberry should be taken in for questioning to determine who else was involved in the staging of this disgusting exercise in petty terrorism.

And this Huckabee is a preacher?? I wonder what he preaches on Sundays – kill African Americans. With America’s history vis-a-vis attempting to kill their presidents, this is the stupidest thing from a former candidate. For those who see this as a joke – hopefully one day some idiot will aim a gun at them or their family – let us hope that they too will see the funny side of a loaded barrel being pointed at them. There are a lot of crazy people out their without a prominent political figure and a preacher egging them on. Hopefully, McCain will select him as his VP to underline his toughness

Wow I couldnt believe my eyes and ears when i saw and heard him, its amazing what some people hide deeply in their hearts , until it comes out. May God Bless America. and may Huckabee pray that nothing happens to President Elect Obama, or he will be in deep trouble.
