McCain: Not Offended By Alleged Age-Baiting

ABC News’ Ron Claiborne Reports: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, dismissed remarks by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., that McCain’s aides charged were aimed at making issue of the 71-year-old Republican’s age.

Campaigning in Jersey City, N.J., Friday, the Arizona Republican said he wasn’t offended by Obama saying McCain had "lost his bearings" for remarking that Hamas favored the Illinois Democrat’s candidacy. McCain said, "I ignore it. I don’t take offense to it."

Watch the VIDEO HERE.

Two senior McCain advisers blasted Obama for what they characterized as an underhanded gibe about McCain’s age.

On The Daily Show earlier in the week, Obama said McCain was trying to "smear" him by saying Hamas, a group that controls the Gaza Strip and that the United States government considers a terrorist organization, wanted him to be president.

For him to toss out comments like that I think is an example of him losing his bearings as he pursues this nomination," Obama said. "We don’t need name-calling in this debate."

Mark Salter, one of McCain’s top aides, fired back: ""He used the words ‘losing his bearings’ intentionally, a not particularly clever way of raising John McCain’s age as an issue. This is typical of the Obama style of campaigning." The Obama campaign denied the remark was an allusion to McCain’s age.

In New Jersey, McCain said he does not believe and was not implying that Obama shares "the values and the goals of Hamas," but he added: "It’s also a fact that a spokesman for Hamas (in North America) said that he approves of Senator Obama’s candidacy. I think that’s of interest to the American people and that’s something that needs to be discussed: why his policies should meet with the approval of a spokesperson for Hamas. I think that it’s a legitimate point for discussion."

McCain was also asked if his age is a legitimate issue in the race for president.

"Every issue that the American people want to be an issue and it’s part of their discussion, it’s fine with me," he said. "Just as Reverend Wright’s remarks — [which] I don’t think Senator Obama shares in anyway, but [Obama] has said that it’s a legitimate topic of discussion. If that’s what the American people want to discuss, that’s fine. I’ll continue to try to introduce them to my 96-year-old mother and the same vigor and the same energy that I have been able to display throughout this campaign allowed me to win the nomination of my party."

At that point, Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., who has endorsed McCain and accompanied him to the environmental-themed campaign event at the Liberty Science Center, stepped forward and said, "I just want to report that this morning I personally checked John McCain’s bearings and he has not lost any of his bearings. They’re all in great shape."

Well, gee, John, that’s awfully nice of you not to take offense, but do you think calling Obama a friend of Hamas might have been a bit offensive from Obama’s point of view?
If not, you may have lost more than your bearings.
That was a cheap shot to say the least!

Sen. Hillary Clinton should consider running independently! The polls indicate that she can win–she can beat both Obama and McCain in a three way match-up!

Posted by: charleschaplin | May 9, 2008, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm

Chuck,
“she can beat both Obama and McCain in a three way match-up!”
Do you care to share where you found these numbers? On its face, this is a ludicrous claim. Say she got 50% of the Dem vote, which will be roughly over half of the voters in November, where would she get the rest? Republicans? If you actually think that any meaningful number of Republicans like her or want her to be prez, you must have the Columbian Cartel’s number on speed dial.

Posted by: x | May 9, 2008, 3:04 pm 3:04 pm

If Hillary could not win the Democratic primaries vote, how would she win the general election? All of the Republicans that voted for her in primaries would vote for McCain, and all of the Democrats that voted for Obama evidently want him to be the president and not her. She would be the Ross Perot/Ralph Nader of the election.

I watched that interview and there was no way that could have been construed as a poke at McCain’s age. Perhaps his ethics, but not his age.
Seems like kind of a dumb reach on Salter’s part. Obama ignores about 20 of those kinds of comments a day out of Clinton.

Posted by: Michael | May 9, 2008, 3:28 pm 3:28 pm

McCain must be senile if he thinks that Obama was talking about his age. He wasn’t. He was talking about McCain’s “moral compass” which has so many holes in it with his Hamaas smear that he has indeed LOST HIS BEARINGS.
The soul of McCain will be tainted by this race.
He is OBVIOUSLY NOT going to run a campaign based upon the issues.
McCain is a FRAUD.

Posted by: maritza | May 9, 2008, 3:29 pm 3:29 pm

Senator McCain should be the very last individual to take that cheap shot about Hamas’ preference for Obama. is it Obama’s fault that they find Obama a more appealing leader?
Moving forward to the general elections, I hope McCain remembers that he adopted a NON-WHITE child and remember how certain racists comments were used against him when he was running against George Bush.
We expect certain behaviour from Hillary and Bill Clinton…NOT McCain!
Also, with reference to guilt by association, I hope he knows that America remembers the Keating 5 issue!

I find this so funny. This all started with that snide crack about Hammas and Obama. Recently, McCain’s Michigan staff fired a suspected terrorist supporter that Bush also had on his staff. Seemed kind of interesting, given the timing.
Did they fire him because he supports terrorist causes or because the press found out he was working for McCain?

Posted by: DAVID NH | May 9, 2008, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

I’m a little confused myself. What does age have to do with losing one’s bearings? How can that statement validly be read as some sort of age-ist remark, unless the person making that interpretation has a faulty idea that losing one’s bearings comes with age? McCain needs to find smarter advisors.

This seems a pretty silly rehash of yesterday’s blog. It is not a “nasty” attack to comment on how John McCain has started doubletalking past all of his previous positions. He really has lost his way in trying to become President from the man he was several years ago. That’s what “losing his bearings” means; and who cares anyway? Why pick apart a few words here and there?
Even more to the point is that McCain’s insistence on this Hamas nonissue as an issue. If you don’t like Obama, then fine, but this is pretty ridiculous. And it won’t make a difference for the price of oil or healthcare or anything else important.

McCain is really, really reaching to play the age card, if he thinks the expression ‘losing his bearings’ has anything at all to do with age. It simply shows how out of touch he is — or, oh dear, is that expression “ageist too??”

I have a been a democrat for 16 years, and have never waivered in my support for the democrat. But I will not support the Obama or his people who have trashed Hillary Clinton and called her everything from a C*nt to a B*tch.
I am happy at this point to watch them all go down. They deserve every bit of it for all their nastiness and self-righteousness.

Obama may win or he may not, but regardless, America will still be in big trouble in the future because of the problem we have with ignorance. That would be for starters the 49% who thought Dubya was a good idea, and then include all the other stupid crap that is accepted as truth by a gullible public. And now that reality has slapped the ignorant awake, they are now spouting more ignorance about Dems, Clinton, Obama and so on. America is fine, it’s what’s wrong with Americans that will do us in eventually. How can we avoid this? Get more education, or at least some. Read lots of good books, magazines, and newspapers. Of course…when and if… Obamam makes a mistake he should be made to explain …..but THIS? Maybe McCain might not be not losing his “bearings” as his aides claim……BUT maybe he should watch out for “lose screws” and making sure he has all his “marbles” too! (SMILE)

Interpreting Obama’s words about McCain “losing his bearings” as a slight against McCain’s age is a real stretch and a not particularly clever way of trying to cast McCain as a victim and thereby getting a sympathy vote. I won’t suggest that Mark Salter is losing his bearings since who knows how it may be construed.

What about the opportunity afforded white boys and girls in Appalachia compared to those same white boys and girls in Greenwich, CT? I am not a McCain fan but I respect his experience. Since I have lived long enough to know the difference between inexperience from my youth and experience from my age, I’ll take experience any day. People can talk about ‘change’ and ‘new vision’ and all of the other empty platitudes but it all boils down to knowing what you are doing so you don’t make big mistakes. A President who makes big mistakes because of inexperience adversely affects us all. We pay for his inexperience. I’m just not ready to ‘willingly suspend disbelief’ for a kid. Obama, wait till you grow up before you try for a grown ups job.

I am an educated person, but I am at a loss for what this means. I read his entire speach several times, but the context makes his overt racist remark no less disgusting. Your use of initals “TWP” is an attempt to take away its power. You want to believe in him so badly you can look past this and not see how this racist remark can be hurtful to people who happen to be white and resent being lumped into a stereotype because of the color of their skin.

Obama is where he is for one reason and one reason only. Whites willingly gave him opportunities because of his race. Show me any other society where the dominant racial group does that willingly. I personally don’t believe in quotas and set asides required by ‘affirmative action’ but he and his wife have obviously been beneficiaries of this. Complaining about whites is ridiculous when you look at the plethora of opportunites that have been bestoyed upon blacks by whites is a little too much to stomach.

I am a Democrat, but I do know we have a serious problem with age discrimination in our great country.
Check out John Robbins’ book “Healthy at 100″ to see how some other societies have healthy, active and REVERED elders. One such society has a saying “We need God and we need our elders.” It turns out that a common factor and probably causative agent for the healthy centurions in these cultures is the respect they receive in their society.
It takes living experience to become a fair person who can reach back into life experiences to sort out junk from treasure. Often “been there–done that” pays off in making decisions.
P.S. Rich–
Is is really true Obama call his grandma a “typical white person”? He basically called her a racist to the whole world in his “race speech”–something that upset me at the time. One usually protects the reputation of your family.

TD,
“However, the Obama supporters, whether it be within the party, and here on this blogg, are full steam ahead on wrecking any chance the party can unify.
Talk about deadbolt stupid.”
Do you really think most people talk like this in public? No, they save it for the anonymous boards. And do you really think most voters read or participate in these types of blogs? Nope.
If the members of the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively, are too stupid to rally around their candidate in November (remember, there are HUGE differences between the two) and eschew all the bullsh** distractions, then we are truly a nation of idiots.

Oh come on, that was funny stuff about Lieberman checking McCain’s bearings. If you can’t get a laugh out of juvenile jokes about politicians, what’s the point of life?

McCain seem more like a gentleman than Sen. Hillary Clinton – however John McCain is leading in his nomination unlike Sen. Clinton. I love the dynamics of John McCain & Sen. Barak Obama. Their difference is day & night, young & old – yes, I have to say it, “Black & White,” Harvard Grad & Non Harvard Grad! We will have a good time with these two. Go OBAMA. Rich,
“I am an educated person”
Congratulations.
Look, I understand that the same set of statistics can be used to prove diametrically opposed positions, and I think that is what the TYPICAL WHITE PERSON imbroglio amounts to. Those who don’t support Obama latch on and obfuscate it for their purposes. Fine. Those who support him do the same. But if you objectively look at it, take away the attribution and the political climate, i am pretty sure it would not even raise an eyebrow. He was talking about his grandmother. Do you know what it was like growing up in the 20′s or 30′s? Do you think there might have been a general(typical) attitude toward race? If you, like me, did not experience it firsthand, go grab an old person and pose the question to them. No one is saying EVERYONE was racist in those times, but it was a TYPICAL point of view. And often times these sentiments die hard or don’t die at all. That is reality. I am glad that, for the most part, society has changed. But 2008 cannot be compared to 28,38,48,58,68….

There’s Obama again, needling the opponent, hoping to incite a tantrum. Obama again, distracting from the real issue (his attraction to thugs, his leftist voting record) by going ad hominem.
Typical Washington politics.

Obama the metrosexual can do whatever he wants to attack McCain’s ball bearings. But he cannot attack McCain’s patriotism, a man who refused to sell out his buddies in prison, who will never sell out this country.

Posted by: purespringwater | May 9, 2008, 6:15 pm 6:15 pm

McCain lost his bearings as a youth as well. Look at his academic record; he graduated near the bottom of his class at Annapolis and only got in because of his Father and Grandfather.

“… a man who refused to sell out his buddies in prison, who will never sell out this country.”
Dude, you do know that he sang like a canary telling everything he knew to the N Vietnamese. As to his not coming back early when offered, he couldn’t. He would have been drummed out of the Navy for violating the code of conduct.

Wow, I didn’t realize that ABC would allow two people with the same handle. But then you scum sucking Rovublicans are more devious than normal people.

BTW guys, did you see that either Clinton or Obama is ahead of ol John in the polls. Even without anyone pointing out his negatives, he can’t beat a Democrat…. so I can see why you cry babys are so upset.

What a terrifc joke Obama played on McCain and his surrogates!
“Bearings” doesn’t just mean “one’s sense of direction”. It is a NAVAL term used in the sense of finding one’s position and direction by means of a compass, and particularly used for finding where to aim weaponry from a ship or airplane, as in McCain’s medal-winning accuracy at aerial bombing in Vietnam.
And McCain, and his supporters, didn’t recognize this military, NAVAL metaphor? LOL!

John McCain is absolutely right. Every time Obama wants to label someone on the age factor, McCain can label him as the inexperienced candidate with a paper thin resume. All topics are on the table for discussion? I suspect that would include his judgement on Wright after 20 years as his spiritual mentor. It probably will include his “bitter” remarks about all those bitter people who cling to their guns and their religions in hard times, his Ayers relationship, his attractiveness to Hamas, his Rezko funds, his Rezko house. I hope he is not eating his morning waffles when he is asked any of the questions.
Let’s see how long it is before the media switches their negativity to McCain. Right now, they are still trying to fight Hillary. She is tough and she is not a quitter.

Go for it Obama.
Keep slamming the voters over 50.
Keep working to disenfranchise Florida voters.
The senior electorate is one of the largest voting blocs in the country, and they DO elect Presidents.
They will not elect an anti-senior, anti-gun, pro-abortion, pro-gay, pro-illegal immigrant, pro-Hamas, liberal of liberal like Barack Hussein Obama.
Remember one of the most popular Presidents in American history, Ronald Reagan?
Reagan was about the same age as McCain.
President McCain.

By the way, Hamas tied Barack Obama to Hamas, not John McCain.
If you remember correctly, it was the leaders of Hamas that picked Barack Hussein Obama as the candidate they would like to see elected as President.
Looks like Obama supporters don’t really know who is endorsing this particular liberal.

The simplest reason why Obama is far better qualified than McCain to lead the US is that Obama is a much smarter person who knows how to think.
McCain has much more experience, but his thinking is clouded by an ill-conceived and obsolete notion of patriotism. McCain fell for Bush’s lies for the simple reason that he was not smart enough to see through the deception. His antiquated sense of pratriotism and personal baggage from his Vietnam experience made him incapable of judgement – as simple as that.
Comparing McCain’s experience with Obama’s lack thereof, not taking into account Obama’s vastly superior intellect is like deciding that the old guy at the piano bar is a better pianist than Lang-Lang simply because he has hammered at the intrument for 40 years.
Experience in the absence of talent is appealing to the uneducated classes, but it is not a rational choice.

Amazing that anyone would publicly trash Viet Nam veterans (or any veterans for that matter) and their service to this country in an effort to prop up a left-wing liberal like Barack Obama.
Most intelligent Americans have the utmost respect for the men and women who have served this country in the armed forces and would never stoop to demeaning their sacrifice for political gain, as Obama supporters apparently do.
If intelligence is defined by one’s ability to twist and scheme the political process for personal gain, Obama wins hands down.
However, true patriotism (the McCain kind) is not and never has been an ill-conceived or obsolete notion. Those who think so are most likely illegal aliens or their family members who feel that they are deserving of American benefits simply because they live and breathe.
The intellect of Barack Hussein Obama was made evident when Senator Hillary Clinton spanked him soundly in the last televised debate, the one that resulted in Obama running away from any future, potential thrashings. In that aspect, Obama is still running.
Patriotism as defined in service to one’s country and simple respect for the same, may not always seem rational to some, but it remains as a quality that has fostered the greatness of this country for over 200 years.
Men like Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, and John McCain have served their country well and command the respect of every true American, as do all our veterans.
Men like Barack Obama serve themselves and command the attention of those with a like mind..nothing more.

Why are thinking people still debating the differences, I don’t what is wrong with Americans, This would be the same asking if a child molester should be your childs teacher, They only crave power….. That is all they want. They don’t think you are a pure American Snow Flake, They only care about themselves period. WAKE UP!!!! There is only one American running for President Ron Paul, How about a guy that would be President for free? That is over 300,000 Dollars back to the bottom line, As a Shareholder of America, I will vote for the CEO who will cost the Company least, But Some of you people still think that America is red white and blue, When we all know that it is GREEN!!!!!!

How could this man with both a father and grandfather who were admirals not recognize the NAVY term “lost his bearings”?
This is a NAVAL TERM that means an individual has lost sight of their navigational standards. It has nothing to do with AGE…Navy men and those that used this slogan were ALWAYS referring to people who had become sidetracked away from their presumed course. Young captains could “lose their bearings” as well as old ones.

I support Obama, but he better chose his words carefully. People will forgive bad choice of words once or twice, but not on a daily basis.
I have equal respect for Obama and McCain. Obama gave his supporters stern warning not to engage in smear campaign, and he followed though with it. McCain on the other hand let his supporters engage in smear campaign, and he didn’t do much to stop them. That is a bad thing in my book.
Mccain’s age is not an issue. He has been through two wars. He can handle the pressure of Presiden’t job better than George “border-patrol” Bush, Bill “draft-dodger” Clinton, and Hillary “sniper-fire” Clinton.
If Obama becomes president, I think he will be a worn out man at the end of 8 years, especially because of the situation that this country is in right now. In case of McCain, I am slightly concerned that lobbyists will be in charge. If Hillary becomes president, then there is no question in my mind that this country will be run over by lobbyists. I’m a bit relieved that she won’t get that chance this time.

Nice going Obama! Your really sticking to the issues!
One could say, discrimination of age against McCain.
Talk about what your going to do for the country and protect the country on terrorism. Obama keeps taking about change, WHAT CHANGE! I have no idea what he has done for the country or what he plans to do.

A real bipartisan combination is the dream ticket that can blows OBAMA back to Illinos
McCain – Hillary
Why should we let the dump party dictate everything; specially the communist party run by Howard Dean, Pelosi, and Jimmy Carter.
Let McCain and Hillary resolve their differences and hand a landslide loss to OBAMA. McCain is at the age 73, Hillary still has a good chance to be the president. That will be the real first. McCain is the type of guy who can make these non-traditional bold decisions.
It’s time that we put people before the party. McCain and Hillary can work together and they have been in excellent terms.
Again why not! You only have one life to live. The communist party absolutely stinks and is corrupted to the bone. To put the snob to rest, anything is worth the while.
McCain – Hillary

This is just a taste of what’s to come for Obama. The repubs will throw the book at Obama and leave no stone unturned. Add to this the wounds inflicted on your own party loyalists and you have a lost cause in nov.
You have disinfranchised your own party stalwarts who have voted the party line for years. Then you align yourself with the likes of Ted Kennedy and Kerry two of the biggest losers in the party. Notice how all the past losers Kerry, McGovern, Dean and all the others are now telling Obama how to do it.
This comming from from someone saying they want to “change” old Washington politics but, aligns himself with exactly what he wants to “change”.
President Clinton the only democrat to have two terms since Roosevelt and you want to just blow off those party loyalists.
Obama has already lost the election.

Posted by: Average Joe | May 10, 2008, 9:18 am 9:18 am

Hillary,
since your party has given you shut. Fight back and give them hell. At the time of crisis, we put the country before parties.
The conservatives + working class + religious voters + rural Americans + older generations
>>>
the black community + the young and innocent
Why not? Since the HIllary voters are going to vote for McCain anyway. Perhaps Hillary can set up a new LABOUR PARTY to work for the middle class and the working class.
It is much easier for Hillary to work with McCain than OBAMA the snob. This would save America from threats of the empty suit.

I don’t get it… Obama did not say that McCain lost his marbles, he said he lost his bearings, like a ship at sea. The campaign ship that McCain is navagating, is not holding true to his statement of campaigning on a “clean” platform. Obama was responding to McCains remarks, not his age.

Posted by: Ed30041 - Cumming, GA | May 10, 2008, 2:22 pm 2:22 pm

Why doesn’t everyone leave McCain’s age out of the picture. Have you seen/heard his mother? Obviously, he has great genes going for him. And, he has much more important issues facing him. He is a great American and (I believe) an honest one. I’m not a McCain supporter, but I am a McCain fan and think that his mind works fine and so does his patriotism. Isn’t that enough from a democrat?

Posted by: Marge Griffin | May 10, 2008, 6:36 pm 6:36 pm

If Obama won’t say–I will. This guy is too old to be president, and on top of that he’s a hot head. I can just picture it–Grandpa McCain–old senile and pissed is ready to push that red button. And hey people, this old man is only going to help the rich and the corporations! Wake up!

Posted by: me | May 11, 2008, 2:53 am 2:53 am

Actually McCain is quite old. He is 72 years old now and will be close to 80 after his first term. I think that is the problem with the United States. They elect these older people that try to maintain the old ways and have no vision of how to move the country forward. McCain does not have any idea about the younger generation and tries to make decisions based on how he grew up and not on what is pertinent for the country today. That is why McCain Flip-Flops on almost all of the issues.
