More On That False Quote in the Obama TV Ad

As we recently fact-checked, Sen. Barack Obama has been running a TV ad that falsely uses a quote from New York Times columnist Paul Krugman about Sen. John McCain’s gas tax holiday plan and applies it to Sen. Hillary Clinton’s plan.

Last night Krugman blogged on the matter.

"I did not say that the Clinton proposal would increase oil industry profits," Krugman writes. "If the ad implies that I did, it should be retracted.  The Clinton proposal is financed by an excess profits tax. At worst, it sends money in a circle. In practice, it would probably reduce oil industry profits at least slightly, since the rise in the pre-tax price of gasoline probably wouldn’t wipe out all of the tax cut. I was very clear when I wrote about the Clinton proposal that while I didn’t think it was good policy, it was not the same as McCain’s, and relatively harmless. If the Obama people are suggesting otherwise, they’re being deliberately dishonest."

Meanwhile, Obama has launched another TV ad that uses a quote from Clinton-supporting North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley to bash the gas tax holiday idea.

In 2006, Easley opposed cutting the state gas tax, based on oil industry officials telling Tarheel State lawmakers months that such a cut would not cause an equal drop in price. Easley said cutting the gas tax would be "a subsidy for the oil companies."

A permanent cut in the state gas tax is of course not quite the same thing as a federal gas tax holiday, though economists would argue some of the same principles would apply — that is, the law of supply and demand would mean that oil companies would raise the price regardless. (Especially if Sen. Clinton’s "windfall profits tax" were also to become law and the oil companies passed on their new debt to the consumer.)

Last month Easley was asked about the notion again, and he said, "people need to be told the truth, and that is the price of gas is going to go up and up and up, and there’s nothing that the state government can do to stop that."

That of course has not stopped Easley from touting Clinton’s proposal in robocalls to voters.

Easley’s office has insisted there’s no contradiction. “The governor enthusiastically supports the proposal in Washington because it taxes the windfall profits of big oil to replace the taxes on the people,” Easley spokesman Seth Effron told the Greensboro News-Record “On the state level, there is not the ability to tax big oil, so North Carolina would have a deficit.”

Nice “uplifting” “new politics” from Obama again.

Posted by: janetwickham | May 6, 2008, 10:51 am 10:51 am

Thank you Obama for talking to the country like adults!
Actually, changing from Krugman’s non-inference to Easley’s concrete opinion is a more powerful political message of contradiction and what is wrong with Washington and politics, anyway!
I just hope that people realize that Hillary’s plan would never get approved by the summer, anyway! She is nothing more than a Pander bear in ugly pants suits who cackles like a hyena!

Posted by: Roxanne | May 6, 2008, 10:52 am 10:52 am

first and foremost, it seems the only one running for President that is doing something now instead of talking is John McCain, he is pushing a bill through to stop the tax for the summer, while the dems are fighting it. The 2 libs running are just talk!
now if you tax the corporation they will pass that on to the consumer.
But the libs slipped up here, they finally admitted they take in more then double the profit the oil companies make.
Consider they state that by removing the tax for 2 months will cause the Government to lose over 10 billion dollars. ok so 5 billion dollars a month take that times 12 you get 60 billion dollars in taxes a year, they cry that the oil companies made 30 billion dollars in a year in profit,
So who is benefitting from oil prices!
Please note we pay for each House member’s gas and car.
Democrat Charles B. Rangel, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, should get about 24 mpg (highway) in his 2004 Cadillac Deville. According to the Times, we pay $774.50 a month for his car.

Please note the 10 billion lost is only Federal, do not forget to add your states taxes if you really want to see!!
Oil companies only profit 8 cents a gallon, Feds profit for doing nothing 20 cents a gallon, and states well depending on where you live in california the state gets about 45 cents a gallon, NJ gets about 35 cents a gallon.
So Blame the Libs who love taxes!!

With Axelrove in charge of the Obama campaign, is anyone really surprised that the ads are false or misleading?
The real problem is the same one that surfaced with the Jeremiah Wright scandal of hate, treason, and bigotry.
Obama either does not have real control over his own campaign, or he knowingly allows false information to be used.
Judging from past performance, the answer is probably that both factors are in play with a Chicago-style political posture.

Whatever happened to the “new politics” we were suppose to get from the Obama campaign? Even after he admitted a couple of weeks ago that it had been a mistake to go negative – he keeps doing it!

Obama decides no to use the facts (those supposedly in their favor) and so they stoop to misstatement of facts and misrepresentation? What gives here?
They did the same when going after Hillary’s health care plan. Me thinks that Obama likes to play dirty… and/or his own policies and plans may not be so great.

What gives you the right to say that Obama “falsely” quoted Krugman? What does “falsely” mean?
Perhaps Krugman isn’t such a great writer and wasn’t clear about what he meant?
You are suggesting, and I’m sure you know this and intended it (or maybe you are not such a great writer), that Obama knowingly falsely quoted Krugman – clearly not the case.

Clinton can’t win. Why is she running?
She is trying to force the delegate issue by going nuclear. Why?
The answer is 2012. She knows going through with the nuclear option is going to be so polarizing that most of her supporters will be so worked up that they may even vote against Obama. Hence, Hillary for 2012 dream. Her selfish dream of being president could come true at the cost of democratic party imploding to dusts.
She is the devil himself.

Regardless of your candidate of choice, some of you are kind of missing the point on federal and state gas taxes. Representing them as “profits” is disingenuous. These monies go to pay for the services used when you burn that fuel: road maintenance, bridge maintenance, snow plowing, signage, law enforcement, emergency services, etc. It is part of the cost of driving a car or truck. The money needs to come from someplace. Having these be part of gas taxes is much more fair than say part of income or real estate taxes. It’s not some mysterious liberal tax and spend agenda. It’s paying for the services you use in proportion to the amount you use them.

Hey, people: How about a little outside-the-box thinking. Instead of bellyaching about the high cost of gas, and coming up with pie-in-the-sky schemes for bringing down the price, why not just buy cars that have decent fuel economy? I’ve had a Honda Insight (70.2 mpg average), and I don’t CARE if gas goes to $10/gallon.
Maybe you could also stop bitching at the oil companies (who actually do a decent job, overall), and redirect your anger towards the real culprits: those Detroit automakers and their ad agencies, who’ve spent billions brainwashing the public into believing that they need ever bigger and more wasteful vehicles.

The thing about a gas price short term reduction is “why not”? Even a short term benefit to truckers and strapped commuters is better than waiting 2 years for any relief.
As far as pandering goes Obama when the price reduction came through in IL Obama insisted that signs be placed at the pumps thanking the IL State Legislature for the reduction.
Obama has poor judgement. All his long term mentors …except maybe Kennedy are going to be an issue. Rezko is not over yet. Does anyone remember that in 2005 Obama bought his house with Rezko who was the worst political fixer in IL state history? Does it bother anyone that Obama stayed in that church for 20 years and claims not to have heard the teachings there?
Go Hillary….game changer in progress…

Posted by: Jackie | May 6, 2008, 11:55 am 11:55 am

First of all claiming Obama intentionally misquoted krugman is a stretch. 2nd of all Hillary Clinton is wrong on the issue. She is removing a tax and adding a tax therefore what gives. 3rdly every expert agrees with Obama, Hillary said that she would throw her lot in with the economist and further tried to call them elitist. And 4thly this attack ad was a response to an attack ad Hillary herself put out first. Notice Obama only attacks when being attack, or is self defense a crime also. Krugman himself even said that it is bad policy. NO one agrees with Hillary, even her supporters have to sidestep saying there for it.

Posted by: MM | May 6, 2008, 11:55 am 11:55 am

Watch Obama go more negative with every state as they slip away from him. He hasn’t had a win since February. Every ad will slam her more and more. It’s just too bad she can’t put ads out there with Wright, Ayers, Rezko, a visual with him in front of a flag and no hand over heart like the other 3 on the stage. There is so much that could be made negative against him in TV ads, and Republicans are putting them together now. HRC is the only candidate who can take McCain on. They are both trying to get relief to the American people….the same small town people who cling to guns and religion. Mr. Elite is out of touch. Hillary or McCain ’08!

Some people talk as if companies have the power to set the profit levels. If that was the case they’d be setting it very high. The prices are moving up because of shortage. They’ll making profit of course, but the market sets the price at level that supply matches demand not oil companies.

Posted by: carnival | May 6, 2008, 12:03 pm 12:03 pm

Adam,
That is true in the purest sense. However, you are disregarding a fundemental principle in the OIL industry – The CARTEL. A CARTEL colludes to pre-determine the production levels in order to maintain higher prices. Now, even the OIL companies are buying into this concept and are actually forecasting less production and more profits. That is when the Market needs the invisible hand of Government to intervene and regulate the markets.

This is not the mind set of one person; try to talk to people out side US.
America is a great country, land of opportunity; and the land which has potential to bring whole world together as a single democratic nation.
Since couple of decades you have presidents who lie for their cause… who were/are selfish… real politicians than humans…
See how bad the US economy is, see how the people are suffering in war zones, see how other people from other nations think about America.
Its really sad; how a nation could fall this much down; because of the politicians and their selfish policies
What makes a good president?? Did you ever had a second thought???
- is your new presindent :
young and energetic to bring the whole world together..
think logically and judge the things in the right way and time..
wise enough to create a dream team around with best people for their job..

To say that a gas tax holiday would not give people who drive for a living or commute long distances very significant TEMPORARY economic relief (that in NC and Ind. they desperately need) is disingenuous in the extreme.
And Obama is a hypocrite: While an Illinois state senator, Obama supported a state tax holiday very much like Clinton’s proposal, but without the saving mechanism of a windfall profits tax.
CBS News says Obama voted for the temporary lifting of the tax three times in the state Senate.
The tax holiday was finally approved during a special session in June of 2000, when Illinois motorists were furious that gas prices had just topped $2 a gallon in Chicago. The moratorium lifted the state’s 5 percent sales tax on gasoline through the end of 2000.
According to Salon.com:
“The only scientific study done on the pass-through of the tax holiday savings to Illinois consumers (and those in Indiana, as well, whose citizens enjoyed a similar holiday) found that it actually worked to a large extent.
“The study is titled “$2.00 Gas! Studying the Effects of a Gas Tax Moratorium,” by Joseph J. Doyle Jr. and Krislert Samphantharak. Download the PDF here. The authors concluded that “the suspension of the 5% sales tax led to decreases in retail prices of 3% compared to neighboring states. And when the tax was reinstated, retail prices rose by roughly 4%.”

Since the seventies our government has told us of the need to decrease dependence on foreign oil while “managing” our energy production to the detriment of drilling, off shore windmills, clean coal plants nuclear and other sources. Meanwhile we pay farmers to divert 28% of the corn crop (virtually overnight) away from food into the energy intensive production of a fuel most cars cannot use. Then we wonder why food cost so much. “Use Less” doesn’t seem to be the answer.
Like Laurel and Hardy – it’s another fine mess they’ve gotten us in.
We have contracted out industrial production, energy production, port security, shipping, and whole sectors of our economy to China, the Saudis, and other countries based on some foolish assumption that we can produce without energy or refining infrastructure and that our “intellect” will solve all problems.
Congress and our executive have betrayed our country. It is time to fix this mess and get us back on track. Spend all we need on research, save all the owls you want, but unless you have a solution better than “use less” get out of the way because it is time to stop digging ourselves into a deeper hole. It is time for Congress to unleash America so we can grow again.

Great message to send to the young girls and teens wandering in during a stop between flights NBC! Send the message to girls if they want to grow up to be president they will be ridiculed just like Hillary. NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and General Electric can make sexism a national pastime to really intimidate any female ever thinking of trying to accomplish something! Racism is bad. But sexism is okay! Obama is a whiny wimp who can’t take the heat and should get out of his General Electric kitchen!

No one really cares about this gas tax nonsence. You’re either for a candidate or your not. Hillary tripped up in embellishing a story about landing in Bosnia which they had been told could be rough. Whoopi. Obama’s connections to Wright, Rezko, Ayers are so much more for me to worry over. Hateful ideology towards a people OR THIS COUNTRY WHICH YOU SHOULD LOVE ABOVE ALL ELSE TO EARN THE TITLE “PRESIDENT”, matters more to me.
I would only vote HRC or McCain. They’ve earned it.
Too bad Obama’s Kenyan dad left him at 2 and mother married Indonesian Muslim and raised Obama outside of THIS great country until he came back in early teens to gram/gramps in Hawaii. I think he just missed out on something integral to being AMERICAN. There is some disconnect in him, to be a magnet for Wright, Ayers, Hamas, and so many more AMERICA haters THAT I COULD NEVER VOTE BO. HILLARY OR McCAIN ’08

calli, you are so right about msnbc/nbc and ge – their owner. when i got so disgusted i couldn’t stand it any more, i took them off my “favorites” on my remote so i won’t accidentally turn to them when scrolling up the channels. i
will not watch even a minute of them. (i have done the same with cnn). it’s been over two months now and i’m happier every day not to be seeing them.
i will not buy a single ge appliance (and i’m in the market for a whole kitchen full of new appliances at the moment). this is how we inform the ge’s of this world that we don’t appreciate their attitude toward us, by taking away the only thing they care about – money.
disgusting sexism is rampant in this campaign, and is often initiated by obama and his supporters. in the media, cnn is bad, too, and all the rest aren’t that much better. but msnbc is the worst. so msnbc/nbc and ge get the “finger” from me that obama thought he was so cool sending hillary’s way.

Obama sure does love to hang with people who HATE AMERICA.
The latest picture of Bill Ayers stomping on the U.S. Flag sure drives that point home.
Lets count ‘em.
Rev.Wright, Bill Ayers, The terrorist fundraiser kahlidi, Tony Rezko the hood from Chicago, Auchi the Iraqi Billionaire interpol sez was involved in the food for oil embezelment scandal that the UN supervised, Michelle who has never been proud to be an American,
Hamas, ummmm and the No flag pin on the lapel, no hand over heart pledge of allegiance Senator himself.

Trading speculators are having a large affect on gas prices. Goldman Sacs is a major player in the trading of gas/oil futures. Goldman is one of few big banks that made a profit when others are failing because of the subprime loans for housing.
Goldman and othe banks are located primarily in New York, Sen Clinton’s state. For all her years in the senate, why hasn’t she taken any actions to bring gas prices down?
Congress has been holding hearings for at least two years. A new very weak bill is now being pushed through by the Democrats, mostly for election purposes.
I remember gas lines and only being able to buy gas on certain days in the 1970s. Why can’t the supposedly best country in the world find only meaningful solutions?
The Republications have destroyed our country by not regulating big business to prevent one financial mess after another. McCain is more concerned with promising to appoint Supreme Court Judges that will overturn abortion to make the Evangelicals support him. If abortion is outlawed, we will go back the the people with money getting safe illegal abortions and others getting dangerous abortions or dying from abortions.
Thanks to media such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity we have spent many weeks rehashing Rev Wright, Bill Ayers, and too a much less extend liar Hillary. What if all that effort were put into trying to find “real” solutions to the financial crisis in this country, Guess what, Limbaugh and Hannity make big money, they do not care about the middle and lower class.
It is amazing to me that Obama is still doing well against Hillary considering everyone thought she would be the clear winner. Hillary has benefited from being married to Bill and all of Bill’s connections.
Limbaugh had an impact on Ohio and Texas. Combine that with media attacks and Hillary’s nonstop attacks, it is amazing that Obama is still doing well.
Hillary knows Congress is not going to pass a gas tax holiday because it is a bad idea. No more Clintons or Bush’s 3rd term!!!

Well, Jake, Krugmans’s got one thing blatantly totally wrong.
The profits tax will not hurt the company one iota. They’ll simply raise funds in some other way to make up for the funds they lost paying the tax.
Are we honestly to beleive that they’ll just swallow it, or cut into a CEO bonus or two? Of course not, they’ll just gouge it out of consumers.
Under the Clinton plan, we’ll save 18 cents on gas for a few days, then the supply/demand issue will bring the base price up. Then later, when the windfall profits tax is billed, we’ll see our prices jump way up.
So, what’s it gonna be, America? Imaginary releif that costs us more than it “releives” us?
We’re not all suckers (I hope).

Continuing the IRAQ war ad infinitum
Cutting taxes for the Wealthy
Torturing and holding people without trial
Destroying our environment to give Big Oil a higher profit margin.
Legislating what people do in the bedroom or with their own bodies
Rolling back privacy, probable cause, and other crucial civil rights
I could go on. Don’t kid yourself, you’ll do the right thing in November.

I would think a gas tax cut at the state level would cause a small rise in the price across the country as slightly more of the limited supply of gas gets used in that state. Then only a small portion of the cut would add to oil company profits, a price paid by the entire country, but most savings would go to the consumer in that particular state… Still not a good idea. But at least it benefits that state, while a nationwide cut hardly benefits any group of consumers at all, and actually hurts when you take into account the lost government revenue.

I would love for Obama to win both states, but here is my prediction
Clinton wins Indiana by 8 and Obama wins NC by 5%
The Clinton camp spins that as a victory and goes on to use the nuclear option. Then they win the white house and 4 years later, America has become like England, a formerly great country but one that lives in the past.
But, if the Gods intervene, Obama wins, goes on to win the white house, realigns America with the world, decreases global dislike of America, improves parity inside the country, invests in infrastructure, wins another term in the white house and leaves the white house as one of the greatest presidents in modern history.
Which will it be?

I don’t agree with Krugman’s comment that, at worst, under Clinton’s gas tax proposal, the money goes around in a circle. Clinton proposes to suspend a gross receipts tas but recover any oil company price-raising by a windfall profits tax. It is a lot easier for an oil company to use accounting to understate profits than it is for the company to under-report gross receipts. Thus there is a danger that Clinton’s proposal will result with the oil companies coming out ahead. Obama is right — a gas tax cut is not a fix. To lower gas prices, you need to reduce demand for gas by things like increasing the required EPA mileage rating for new cars, getting rid of the SUV-light truck exemption from the fleet mileage rating, providing subsidies for electric and plug-in hybrid car development, and similar things, all of which do not provide any instant solution.

A letter was signed by 230 leading economist against the stupid gas tax holiday idea, and how did Hillary respond? She has called them elitist and pressed on. This is very telling about the woman. She doesn’t care what others think, even experts. She considers herself the smartest person around, and expects others to swallow her programs in their entirety with no compromise. How anyone can believe this is the leadership style that will bring us together, and take the country forward is beyond me.

Posted by: Progressive Democrat | May 6, 2008, 2:53 pm 2:53 pm

Let me start by confessing that I am an economist at a state university. Senator Obama is right that a summer gas tax holiday is no long term solution for our energy and climate change problems. On the other hand, Robert Reich and other Obama supporters are dead wrong when they say that cutting the gas tax this summer will raise pump prices. Retailers and refiners might not pass all of the tax cut to drivers but they certainly won’t raise the pump price. Let’s not repeat bad economic reasoning in order to bash Senator Clinton.

Posted by: graniteman | May 6, 2008, 2:56 pm 2:56 pm

Jerome, like it or not, no economy can keep growing without down cycles. The laws of economics aren’t controlled by the experts, just understood.
Can you explain how Hillary would prevent the oil industry from simply keeping the price of gas the same and pocketing the difference, especially if they are expected to pay for it? If she will ignore the economists perhaps Hillary figure she’s so smart that she’ll start setting prices for gas? And if she’s so good at that, why not set prices for everything?

Posted by: Javalation | May 6, 2008, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm

Only now, when Obama gets desperate, does he show his true color, which is that:
(a) He has nothing else to show for.
(b) So, he lied and twisted other’s words to try to undermine rival.
I can’t believe this guy qualifies to be a professor, given that he plagiarizes others’ words and plans and claims to be his own, and now he outright lies.

Posted by: tiddlw | May 6, 2008, 3:01 pm 3:01 pm

Clinton’s plan differs from McCain’s in that she also suggests the windfall tax profit, but no one seems to think that this is realistic, so we end up where we started, and we begin to see the logic in applying a criticism of one plan to another plan.
Would Clinton’s plan really be harmless? Even if all of the economic experts were all wrong and it worked the way she is pretending to believe it could, what about 3 more (peak) months of ignoring our dependence on oil, buying gas-guzzling SUVs, undermining the development of a “green collar” workforce, keeping pressure off of real solutions like improving fuel efficiencies and developing alternative fuels. Let’s not forget that this national vice is a foreign policy and security liability.
As I believe that Clinton’s plan is in fact counterproductive, I feel that the term “pandering” is too kind. It should be categorized along with the authorization of the Iraq war as self-serving politics that actually do us harm.
That said, I am a bit dissapointed to see the liberty that was taken with the quote. Obama is and should be held to a higher standard and this may be a bit of a slip. If we are lucky enough to put Senator Obama in office we shall continue to hold him to the highest standards of ethics, a condition he alone has created.
I’ll take this infraction anyday over the mulititude of willing deceptions and maddening condescensions coming from Clinton and McCain that should have even their own supporters completely outraged.

Why cant congress just pass the bill so we can do some horizontal drilling in The Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. We won’t even have to set a foot on the refuge in theory. From what I understand there is plenty of oil to last this country a few years under there. A gas tax holiday will just make the oil companies alot more money. Instead of paying the tax to the government the oil companies will raise their prices and inturn we will be paying them instead. When it comes down to it it is not about politics it is about common sense.

Again Mark McVay,
A Obama supporter claim “racism” when he does not like the truth. Why are the people that post Obama’s own lies, as proof Obama is a liar “Racist”. Possibly it’s the pot calling the kettle black.

Your litany of “lies” was quite lengthy, UT. And I don’t beleive I used the word racist at all. What are your feelings on torture and illegal wars?

ABC has a lot of nerve writing about integrity after the last Jerry Springer show…. I mean …debate fiasco.
Good thing Hilary got her court appearance postponed last month so she could campaign in Indiana. Hilary just wants to get back to the white house to look for some more of her hidden documents that the FBI couldn’t find the last time. I bet you Hilary is already working on her story for how she made a 1,000% profit on oil company stocks in 3 months because of a “hunch”. Hey, it worked before…

Hi Soothsayer. We in Switzerland are not worried that Iran will point a nuclear against us. We get gas from them and thus support their economy. Maybe if you talked with people you would have low gas prices too!!

Posted by: Katherineklein | May 6, 2008, 3:40 pm 3:40 pm

Katherineklein, you consider 1.84 Swiss Francs per liter (which is what I just paid a few hours ago at a Migros gas station outside of Winterthur) to be low gas prices? lol

It’s not the questions I don’t like, it’s the comparative seriousness of the charges. I don’t see anything substantive in many of the allegations against Obama.

ABC would sell thier soul to add the O’Rielly-Hannity crowd to thier falling viewership. It seems that transaction is a done deal.

For all those who complain about “Big Oil profits” it is only a function of our consumption! If you want to spend less on gasoline then you should!

Much like George Bush, the false prophet Senator Obama, twists the truth to his liking.

Hillary Clinton is a corrupt politician. She also covered for Bill while he was taking advantage of women (and that’s putting it lightly). Don’t think for minute the Republicans won’t bring that up, and many other damaging accusations against the Clintons. Have you all forgotten the Clinton scandals already?

If 92% of any one ethnic group or race vote for one particular candidate, then you can rest assured issues such as depth of experience, range of knowledge, track record and personal accomplishments played little if any role in their selection. That kind of phenomenon is usually defined as a “mob” or “herd”… which is contrarian to the needs of the many.

>”Big Oil profits are only a function of our consumption”
I wish that were true, but it’s not. Stats released yesterday show gas consumption is way down, yet prices continue to go up. That proves this gas price spike is not supply & demand, but something else.

A vote for John McCain is a death sentence for thousands of more U.S. troops and innocent Iraqi civilians (CHILDREN, women, and men). You vote for McCain, you will certainly have blood on your hands. When you meet your maker, you will not have the excuse that you didn’t know. You will not be able to hide behind Bush or McCain and blame them for it. With your vote you have sealed your fate. Don’t say you were not warned.
And don’t think that by voting for Hillary you’re clean either. She voted for the war and she’ll say anything to be the next president – she is a corrupt politician.

What organization is better run…Congress or Exxon?

Obama’s solution to the high prices is to find ways to reduce our use of oil. He proposes higher gas efficiency, and renewable energy.
Hillary’s circular proposal is so wrong NO economist will side with her, and only McCain is with her in the Congress.
One problem with her windfall tax is that she’s already proposed using that for other things, she can’t use it twice.
The other solution Hillary pushes is breaking Opec. When does she think about addressing our need to reduce the oil we use?
Obama is think solving the problem we have with using too much oil, and real solutions. His priority is to reduce our oil usage with better fuel efficency, and investing in research for alternative fuels.

How can anyone believe some guy who went to church for 20 years and didn’t know the tone/preachings of his church? The guy is either a retard or a liar?
What kind of character does someone have, when they get a home basically bought for them from a criminal?
Obama is a terrorist waiting to get into the White house to blow it up.
Actually, I hope he wins the nomination. He will be easier to beat in the general election. Can’t wait for the attack machine to start!

I think that the networks should ban people like Mr. Charlie Gibson after him & George crusified Senator Obama, news people should not show their beliefs just be fair to bothe candidates

Umm…to “character”…yes, you certainly are that. How about Obama himself — not the three other people you mention — be used to represent the character of Barack Obama? Novel idea?
I would also like a list of your lifelong associations, to — as you do — use it to determine your “character.” Now isn’t that silly?

Obama’s entire campaign is deceptive. He says he stands for change, but is backed by the same America haters that plant bombs, and spread lies about the US gvernment creating the aids virus.

Food prices go up, so we throw more money at farmers (including huge subsidies for NOT growing food). Gasoline prices go up and we decide we need to tax oil companies more? This doesn’t make any sense. US oil companies made less than 8% profit last year. That is not huge. The price of gasoline is not due to the big bad gasoline companies but due to rising demand for petroleum worldwide, a drop in value of the dollar, high US taxes on gasoline, and US government mandated ethanol. Sadly, both Obama and Clinton are either too simple-minded or too politically motivated to do anything other than demonize oil companies.

Posted by: Henry | May 6, 2008, 5:11 pm 5:11 pm

Henry: that’s right, poor oil companies. Barely made a profit last year and this year. Maybe we should start a charity for them – you know, to help them with high gas and food prices.
Who’s with me! Get real!

The ad pointed to says “More low road attacks from Hillary Clinton”, and references the New York Times.
This is referring to the NYTimes article “The Low Road to Victory”, which criticizes Hillary’s negative attacks.
This is not a reference to Krugman’s article.

Hey, your average American will drive out of their way and wait in line just to buy gas that’s 5 cents cheaper than the gas station across the street. Obama just doesn’t get that. We’ll buy gas at the cheapest gas station and then go inside the gas station convenience store and spend double the regular price on some snacks and a soda.

Being a journalist doesn’t mean never having to say you’re sorry. But it does mean you get to say you’re sorry five days late in a one paragraph article that will get scant notice.
But, hey, no skin off my back. Obama tackles Clinton’s and McCain’s plan but offers up nothing of his own. Just “change”!

Why do we have a race about race, and debate what is wrong or right about Wright.Sounds like double talk, well it should, because that is what the media is doing, double talk. Why is it a matter of race when blacks vote for the person who is better able to reshape their country. Thats right people, this country is also made up of black, white, brown and every shade in between. Why can these people not be given credit for picking the best person and not “called to task” because that person happens to be black. Why in the past years did the media not point out that black people voted for the men who have been better able to serve this country. The history of black voters shows that the person that they supports, almost always do a good job runnig this country and raise the standards of respect for America all over the world.

Last fall the country was in uproar about our crumbling roads and bridges, now because of high gas prices Clinton and her supporters want to take all the money that would go to maintaining those bridges so they don’t collapse. What are you going to buy with the estimated $28? Also if Clinton and McCain are serious about this plan why haven’t they proposed legislation with Memorial Day so near?
Buy a bicycle or drive a hybrid. High gas prices are here to stay.

Krugman is never quoted in the ad personally. There were several opinions expressed on the day shown that were critical of Clinton under the headline indicated. Krugman has nothing to worry about. By the way, now that his favorite, Edwards,(and mine) has endorsed Obama, will the brilliant Mr. Krugman follow suit?
