Most Americans Are Concerned Someone Will Try to Harm Obama

Why such sensitivity on the subject of assassinations when Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is involved?

Are the American people more concerned someone will try to harm Obama than, say, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., his likely general election opponent?

Yep.

According to the ABC News/Washington Post poll from March 2, 59 percent of Americans said they were concerned "that someone might attempt to physically harm Barack Obama if he’s the Democratic nominee for president."

"Very" concerned was 24 percent.

83 percent of African-Americans were concerned.

Fewer than half of the American people — 27 percent — said they were concerned someone might attempt to physically harm McCain, with 10 percent saying they were very concerned.

Thanks to ABC News polling director Gary Langer.

Tapper you hit the nail on the head.
What makes it worse is that Hillary has made these sort of comments before.
THERE IS A PATTERN EMERGING HERE.

OF COURSE Americans are particulary concerned about Obama.
Not only or mainly because he’s the first African-American who has come this close to the WHITE House. ALL the great men in recent history who fought for substantial social change in America have been assassinated; that’s the most bitter truth of this country. And so – that’s why people fear for the life of this once in a lifetime fighter for change.

Posted by: petra | May 23, 2008, 8:45 pm 8:45 pm

Whatever. I heard her remarks – they were pretty innocent. She was trying to make the point that people can remember historical primaries which have run until June and there is no reason she shouldn’t stay in until then.
Why does the media have to twist Hillary’s words? What she said had nothing to do with Obama.

leave hillary alone. this has been a long campaign. give her a break if she misspeaks. the same for obama. have a little human compassion here.

The only thing that’s going to happen to Obama is that he will get his butt kicked by Mccain in November. Alot of this hysteria and “fear” is ridiculous and unfounded – where’s the evidence?
Oh, that’s right, there isn’t any. It’s all hearsay.

Posted by: JM | May 23, 2008, 8:50 pm 8:50 pm

obama is not fighting for change; he is fighting for himself–to get and keep power. he is just another politician, willing to say or do anything to advance his career. let go of the messiah thing. we had one and he was crucified. now get back down to earth.

As we edge toward the general election… all the candidates are vulnerable.
Whether it is some Garp-like loon wanting to avenge women, racist, or self-appointed “freedom fighter”… or just someone who wants the noteriety… they all better watch their backs.

What a sad thing to have to contemplate. I don’t trust Hillary, but I don’t think she would stoop to such levels. What she said was indeed stupid, but I don’t think she would ever have a hand in an assassination attempt.

Posted by: Don | May 23, 2008, 8:53 pm 8:53 pm

IT IS A FACT that there have been fears over Obama’s life.
He was given Secret Service protection earlier than any presidential candidate in American history.
Hillary has said this more than once – she should watch tounge.

Posted by: Patricia | May 23, 2008, 8:53 pm 8:53 pm

And I’m concerned about something happening to Hillary. There is a lot of hate out there, all you have to do is read the blogs. This blog at least is moderated well.
So yeah, the Secret Service does a good job for both Hillary and Obama, and of course we support their work to stop any nutjob.

ron, what Hillary said was NOT a momentary fatigue from a loooong campaign. As TIME reports, she said the very same thing in the very same disturbing context earlier, in March, in an interview with TIME.
Which also proves that she LIED in her regrets, saying that Ted Kennedy was on her mind… How tasteless.
Here’s from March, in TIME:
TIME: Can you envision a point at which–if the race stays this close–Democratic Party elders would step in and say, “This is now hurting the party and whoever will be the nominee in the fall”?
CLINTON: No, I really can’t. I think people have short memories. Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn’t wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual.

Oh! Man! Did idiot Keith Obermann of MSNBC (an Obama Lover) really play on the remark Hillary made (innocently) about Robert Kennedy. Mr. Obermann’s whole show this evening was about how disgusted he was with her remark and he could not believe how stupid and incentive she was to make that remark. According to idiot Kool-aid Obermann it’s time for Hillary to exit.
I think it’s time that Obermann gets his chewn out for his bias reporting!!!

Which is worse, the “sniper-fire” comment or this? Time for Hillary to tell her supporters to support Obama. mc-more-war would just be another bush-term, something that this country can’t afford. Obama will be Great in 2008!!!

Posted by: pt | May 23, 2008, 9:01 pm 9:01 pm

Maybe it was a slip of the tongue, but I bet she wouldn’t mind if it happened. It must have crossed her mind recently for it to slip out so easily. If she was fatigued, it would explain things. It is harder to keep things under raps when you are getting tired.

Posted by: huh | May 23, 2008, 9:02 pm 9:02 pm

Ron, you are as bad as Clinton. Maybe all Clinton supporters have have gone off the deep end. No good defense for this misspeak.

Posted by: shall | May 23, 2008, 9:03 pm 9:03 pm

She probabaly didnt mean anything by it and was referring to past nominations. What was wrong was using that as an example and saying it out loud. You never know who might take a statement like that and think “good idea”. There are some real crack pots out there. When running for the highest position in the country, one should be more resposible than that. We all know that it was just an unthought statement and I know the media will spin it out of control as they have done with Clinton, Obama and McCain on really silly points. However it is still something that should have never been said especailly with all the racist nuts listening. Thats what she should apologize for.

Maria: If she supposedly said the same context in MArch, then why now are the pundits knocking her for it?
Is it because they want her out and this is their golden chance to do so.
I call it dirty politics!!
How about Obama’s remarks about Bitter Americans and small town gun tottin AMericans.
He needs to get out! I for one think these remarks are very offensive to us Americans!!!!!

It is clear what she meant: “Maybe Barack will be assassinated.”
Folks, please. While Democrats are beginning to wonder if her insincerity can be that bad, Republicans have known her to be one phony, disgusting, partisan the likes of which our country has rarely seen before.
There is a reason why Bill Clinton loyalists could not stomach Hillary. More leading Democrats, I predict, will be vociferous in their rejection of this horrible woman in the coming days.

Get a grip, people, and stop trying to slander Senator Clinton. The only reason she brought it up was to reference the date of Bobby Kennedy’s primary contest, which had run into June. Bobby Kennedy was obviously campaigning when he was assassinated and that was in JUNE.
The only reason this is even an issue is because the Obama campaign egged on the media with their first statement they issued about it saying the following:
“Sen. Clinton’s statement before the Argus Leader editorial board was unfortunate and has no place in this campaign,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.
Bobby Kennedy JR has already denounced what the Obama campaign has done and said he knows Senator Clinton did not mean anything other than the date when she referenced it.
This is clearly another smear campaign being run by Obama & friends to take away from the fact that she wiped the floor with him in WV & Kentucky and will do so in Puerto Rico and that she leads him in the important swing states in the polls for the general election, while Obama loses to McCain in those same states. He’s desperate and scared. If he and his campaign really thought he could win this nomination, he wouldn’t have said a word about this or started yet another smear campaign.

Mary – keith obermann is a weird guy. He looks weird, he’s not smart and his show is stupid (Countdown?? I never understand his countdown). In short, I despise this guy more than matthews.

All this talk of an attempt on Obama’s or any candidates life misses the most important aspect. Who would do it? Putting aside irrational moonbat conspiracy theories involving govt that only belong in novels, where is this person? There are probably thousands of individuals who would like to take such action, but all of them are too unstable and not bright enough to do it, the kind of thought process that leads to this behavior is also the kind that prevents it from happening. They are too inept, emotional, unskilled and unprofessional to make a descent life for themselves let alone pull of the infinitely complex and demanding task any attempt would be. So its not going to happen. Much ado about nothing, as all of this talk is driven by people who think hollywood movies and techo-thriller novels are real life. They are not.

Why are people much more concerned for Obama’s safety than the safety of McCain or Clinton? Do they believe that someone is going to assassinate Obama because he is black? What a stupid, idiotic idea. Where are these raving racists that are opposed to Obama because of his race? They don’t exist, except in the minds of stupid Americans.

Posted by: BillDemo | May 23, 2008, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm

If some wacko assassinate obama, that would make our country looks terribly bad. That’s just one more reason to vote for McCain. obama has laid a great foundation for black to be president. so 4, 8 years from now people will get to accepting a black president. Things should happen slowly so that we’re not surprise. Same thing could happen to Hillary too. THAT’S WHY MCCAIN IS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR THIS ELECTION (in addition to him having much more experience to command the military. think of inexperienced obama commanding the military, that would be scary!)

I had to turn off MSNBC (Obama Network)… Wow… “mass hysteria” there (and on the blogs) that Hillary intended something else than what she actually said with the RFK reference. The one sane voice John Harwood was shouted down.
Get over it folks… There is NO pattern emerging… The real pattern in recent history started in 1963 with JFK. The pattern was further played out in 1968 when first Martin King was assassinated, then RFK and then in October 1968 hundreds of student protesters were assassinated in Mexico City just 10 days before the Olympics.
And let us not forget the assassination of the women leader of India… Indira Ghandi in 1984. Add to that Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995.
Politics brings out irrational hatred. Think about that when you go overboard in your own extreme rants.

To begin with, for Sen. Clinton to use the month of June as any kind of yardstick is a fallacy, smoke & mirrors……the Democratic primary historically didn’t even start until March. This year the primary started in January. So, June of 2008 has no valid comparison to June of 1968 (RFK) or June of 1992 (WJC) as any kind of benchmark in terms of duration. In other words, June 2008 is really August of 1968 or 1972. This point seems to be lost in all of the furor over these ill-chosen remarks by Sen. Clinton.
Furthermore, those of us who lived through those days of 1968 should be appalled at the reference to the murder of RFK as if it’s some side note to where the campaign may be in the month of June.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has endorsed Mrs. Clinton, defended her remarks in a telephone interview Friday evening. “I’ve heard her make that argument before,” Mr. Kennedy said, speaking on his cell phone as he drove to the family compound in Hyannis for the holiday weekend. “It sounds like she was invoking a familiar historical circumstance in support of her argument for continuing her campaign.”
Mr. Kennedy said he has been traveling and had not seen the video or read Mrs. Clinton’s comments, but said his support of Mrs. Clinton has not wavered.

Unimpeachable sources very close to the Clintons have reported that the morning after the Indiana and North Carolina primaries, calls were made by individuals, recognized as high-ranking members of the U.S. political elite, informing the Clintons that, “while this was not necessarily [their] position,” they wanted it passed along that under no circumstances would Hillary Clinton be permitted to take the Democratic nomination, and that, if by some miscalculation, she did take the nomination, she would never be permitted to take the Presidency. Apparently, the messages concluded that, if, by some unanticipated occurrence, she were to actually go ahead and win the Presidency, it would be the shortest-lived Presidency in the history of the United States. The message was explicit: The combination of Hillary and Bill Clinton in the White House meant a Presidency that would simply wield more independence and more power than they were willing to tolerate. Undoubtedly, Clinton’s continual pledge to represent the lower 80% of the U.S. population, and the unspoken fear that some of her policies seem to lean too far in the direction of the proposals put forward by Lyndon LaRouche, have lowered their toleration level.
The point seemed to be underlined in a none-too-subtle cartoon in the May 9 online edition of the London Times. It shows Hillary Clinton laying face down, arms spread, eyes bulging. The American flag is the backdrop, but one of the stars has fallen, its point lodged deep in her back.

I do not know exactly why you are all mudslinging each other about this “assasination issue”.
Whether or not Hillary intentionally said these words or unintentionally uttered, there is an underlying truth that somehow good/noble people are target of one or the other kind, it is a world wide phenomenon but happens quite often here in USA and it could be so barbaric that our minds find it difficult to get rid of such voilent and dangerous events?.
It is not just Obama, anybody good person these days can be a target of evil doers, it can apply to you or me or someone who is a great social reformer.
Someone who is there to help and protect people from crisis, or a nation from falling down below or someone whos is out there to make this world a better and peacefull place.
None of these social causes are easy to perform in today’s world, one has to undergo painful and stressful sacrifices to serve people, it could lead to enemity and envys develop because of the highlighted focus on one individual or a few individual.
The fact here is that Obama might be a target is not because of Hillary said, she said or he said??. Obama is a great guy trying to protect and promote America from degrading and decay from the current ruler and party, he is trying to reform American politics so that a concerted national building occurs where everybody benefits without discriminating white, black, asian, male, female etc., this is what change is all about he is talking all along in this campaign.
It is ironic that the commenters here are fighting calling each other’s name and yelling at each other as some kind of evils, news about voilence or assinations spread like wild fire because of the momentum that is going on, anything said by one leader is going to be twisted and truncated either by the media or by the people of the parties?.
This assasination words been heard even before Hillary said this, you can hear this when you go to buy a coffee or grocery or in the movie theatres or at work places, when people talk. You could here this kind of talks because such cruelties happened here in US and also happened in other countries.
No good human wants such things to happen but unfortunately we have lots of terrible people, leaders and killers out there. No body knows if this is going to happen to a particular leader but because of Obama’s background and the enormous envious feelings among some section of people in US, it is a nostalgic thinking among some people that he could be a in danger.
I wish leaders like Hillary or even ordinary people do not encourage such perpetrating talks on an individual, it is a demoralized and pathetic thoughts, we have lots of issues and problems to solve to make this world better place, why do people mudsling and hurt each other and cause so much sufferings to each other?.

The article on NewsWeek headline on MSNBC, bright and bolded, OBAMA FACES RACIAL DIVIDE. But it never said Clinton faces racial divide…some 92%. Something is wrong with the media and its slanted views.

Posted by: rock | May 23, 2008, 10:19 pm 10:19 pm

The issue here is not that Hillary meant Obama should be assassinated so she can get the nomination. I’m sure she DID NOT mean that. The problem I have with her remark is that there are CRAZIES out there who might just be waiting for someone to give them a reason…her remark was totally inappropriate.

This is another perfect example that Obama has run a vicious and divisive campaign since day one. It’s so obviously that Hillary was merely referencing the history to explain that a campaign lasts until June is no exception. However, Obama and his campaign released a statement attacking Hillary saying “unfortunate and has no place in this campaign”. This is clearly that he and his campaign are trying to make people believe that Hillary was hoping for Obama’s death and so on. I can’t believe Obama can be so ugly. He claims to unify the country yet he seizes every opportunity he has to try to damage Hillary.
Obama, I have seen enough of your dirty gimmicks as well as ugly things of the so-called democratic party. I’ll be very adamantly boycotting you in the general election, so will many of my friends and other Hillary’s supporters. We will tell you by our actions that you’ll be doomed to lose because you can’t unite us.

Hillary Clinton’s political career is over after this screw-up, in my opinion.
This is worse than George Allen’s “macaca” comment (remember him?).

“Most Americans Are Concerned Someone Will Try to Harm Obama”
Most americans got over that concern until today; when one of our own democratic loved ones crossed into a realm so vile that we didn’t see it coming. It stings and I am ill that I have ever once supported Hillary. I have always wanted to see a woman for president and I was one of her loudest supporters years ago, long before she announced her candidacy. I moved in a different direction this year because Obama, even as a man, is much more in tune with my values.
But just when I thought Hillary couldn’t be worse, she surprises me again with divisiveness. This is far more bitterness and spitefulness than I ever imagined.
She must be aching inside to display such horror outwardly. I feel like my best friend just stabbed me in the back (literally).
I will still vote for Obama and I won’t buy into the fear Hillary and the rest of the republicans want us to. This is wretched, nasty, evil.

She needs to go away!

Posted by: slade | May 23, 2008, 10:28 pm 10:28 pm

She was tired, so she told the truth, her secret hope she has held for months. Her most likely way to the White House is some terrible event happening to the other leading candidate.
When Rachel Maddow was asked why Sen Clinton is still in the race after she no longer can win on committed delegates, Air America’s Rachel Maddow said it best, the way my mother would have:
“He might be run over by a truck”.
That would have been acceptable.
To talk about assassination is not acceptable.
Clinton was just too tired. Being tired and making mistakes are indeed one of the ways the long difficult nominating process works to eliminate some candidates.
Aloha.

OK, I just read the statement and just like ever thing else the Obamabots do, they twist the meaning and content. All it was was a reference to other campaigns that went into June. She made a same similar statement back in March to Time Magazine..Nobody freak out then. For good reason. Nothing bad was meant by it then anymore than now.
Just another chance to pull the race card by Obama.
I think we should continually post this quote by Mr. *Pretend to be Hurt*
“I FOUND A SOLACE IN NURSING A PERVASIVE SENSE OF GRIEVANCE AND ANIMOSITY AGAINST MY MOTHER’S RACE”–Obama

i guess so many of us want believe in the better nature of another, even when that person includes “assassination”. How naive.
If Clinton only wanted to reference a primary race continuing into June, then what does RFK’s assassination have to do with it?

You people are like a bunch of Vultures waiting for the kill. She did nothing wrong and said nothing hurtful. She was talking about an Historical point which by the way is TRUE_ All of you owe her a huge apology, but you know what that’s not going to happen so me and a lot of other people who finally are seeing what’s going on have now given their word they will NOT vote for Obama He is A TRUE DIVIDER. Barack Obama is one of the most creative men in this country. Not only has he not addressed the many attacks by the clinton campaign, he has turned the cheek on many attacks toward not only him, but also his family. So when you all atack Obama make sure you know that he is the prime example of what this country needs, and what you all despies and what the country needs is a leader that does not blow up the place at the first sign of trouble (war in iraq)

Right after mccain said “100 years” he explained what he meant. the full sentence of mccain is the economy is progressing (which is true) but the struggling people haven’t benefit from it.

Interesting how this poll excluded data on how many people fear that Clinton may be physically harmed. My guess is it was closer to Obama’s 59 percent than McCain’s 27 percent. That would not have been as sensational a “story” now though would it. She’s had some pretty vehement enemies for a while, so certainly her security is also a concern.
Hmmm, this was a March 2nd poll….and additional polling questions were only among the frontrunners, Obama and McCain. The media has been trying to write her off for a LONG time now, haven’t they.
Keep fighting Hillary…all the way to convention if need be!

Posted by: Amy | May 23, 2008, 11:45 pm 11:45 pm

Yes Agatha, the pattern has emerged. It is a pattern of intimidation and thuggery from the supporters for Barack Obam with some members of the media covering their backs, refusing to report was is obvious, and amplifying the effect by disimulating to the public.
This has become very serious. If you care for this country, turn back the thugs now then vote your conscience and your self-interests. Do not be intimidated. It is just noise until someone acts on it.
People aren’t afraid someone is going to harm Obama. They are just afraid. That is the short term effect of the Obama campaign working. You’re helping them, Jake. I don’t know why, but you are.
Take a deep breath people. Turn off ABC, CNN and MSNBC. Turn your back on this intimidation. Then vote.
Say NO to thugs.

Posted by: Maggie | May 24, 2008, 12:15 am 12:15 am

HMMMMM
I thought the assassination story had to do with the death of Hillary should she win because the DNC is afraid she’ll wield too much power.
—-
“Unimpeachable sources very close to the Clintons have reported that the morning after the Indiana and North Carolina primaries, calls were made by individuals, recognized as high-ranking members of the U.S. political elite, informing the Clintons that, “while this was not necessarily [their] position,” they wanted it passed along that under no circumstances would Hillary Clinton be permitted to take the Democratic nomination, and that, if by some miscalculation, she did take the nomination, she would never be permitted to take the Presidency.

Posted by: pp | May 24, 2008, 1:11 am 1:11 am

I think I’ve figured out what this is all about….
There has been a lot of onging talk this past week about Hillary seriously making a run for the VP slot…
Obama and his campaign are probably having a fit because they figure if she really wants the second spot, she would probably get it, and they don’t want Hillary forced onto HIS ticket.
So…..the first thing that comes out of her mouth this week that they see an opportunity to twist and turn to their advantage, they do. And then they figure if they make a big enough deal out of it, it will finish off her chances for VP for good.
Please don’t be manipulated by this man and his supporters…..He has NO reason to be offended by anything Senator Clinton said today.
How is it that he so fervently believed that his “bitter, guns and religion” comments were “taken out of context,” but Senator Clinton’s words are not????
What a hypocrite !!!!
The one thing I do see by these posts here is that pretty much everyone is in one camp or the other, and there doesn’t sound like much hope for “unity.”
If Obama does become the Democratic nominee, by whatever misguided actions of the DNC, then he had better stop alienating Senator Clinton’s supporters by creating these media storms over statements that not only has Senator Clinton made before, but no one has ever jumped on her like this for saying them before.
It should be obvious to Obama and his groupies by now that the supporters for Senator Clinton are fiercely loyal to her, and if he was going to have a hard time winning them over before, I think he has just made it IMPOSSIBLE.

And, I hear that as far as Cindy McCain’s tax records – it was a 2 page summary, not an entire tax return. Not much homework there either.

Dema
Has it ever occurred to you that maybe the reason the “A” word comes “so easily” as you say to Senator Clinton, is because for eight years, when her husband was President of the United States, she probably had to live with the chance of that happening to him every day of her life??????
And maybe when you’ve had the possiblity of it being served to you on a platter for eight years, it becomes something like a daily dose of medicine, after awhile you develop a certain tolerance for it.
It doesn’t necessarily mean you like it any more than you used to, you’ve just learned it is a fact of life, and a fact of life that anyone who has become, or is aspiring to become President of the United States, must deal with.
Political leaders are assassinated in every country on Earth (including ours), and have been since the days of Julius Caesar. Avoiding talking about it does not make it go away. But on the other hand, talking about it does not mean you wish it would happen………..

McCain is not a War hero, ask him why his nickname was The Hanoi Hilton Songbird.
Before you go and state an ex serviceman as a hero, get your facts straight first!
The “REAL” John McCain belittled Delores Alfond, head of the National Alliance of POW/MIA whose brother went missing in action in Vietnam. He didn’t want the real truth to come out how he collaborated with the North Vietnamese
Presidential candidate John McCain denied that the Soviets interrogated U.S. POWs in Vietnam. But, former U.S., Soviet, and Vietnamese intelligence agents say they did. Why is McCain lying?
Why won’t he sign the new GI Bill? He says it is too much for the GI’s to get! They give arms and limbs and sometimes their minds just to be ignored? John McCain should be ashamed for turning his back on our Service Men and Women of the United States ever since Vietnam.
He is abusing his POW status to try and become president. Vietnamese tell international press that POW McCain was “singled out for softer treatment
Nope I sure don’t want a traitor as my President. Only reason that McCain has gotten anywhere in politics is because of his families military background.
As a former US Marine I am against Senator McCain. Its time for a change not for another 4 more years of the Bush administrations blunders.

Why were MLK, JFK, and RFK assassinated? Because they were pressing the issue of civil rights for blacks and other minorities. THAT’s why people are concerned that Obama might be assassinated. Running for the highest office in the land, he’s REALLY pushing the civil rights envelope. And there are a lot of “hard-working white Americans” who don’t like that idea. They’re racists, and the polls have shown that they’ll even admit that they would not vote for Obama because of his race. Obama should not have jumped on Clinton for her remarks – he should have ignored it, just as he has ignored other jabs at him that she’s made – as she’s ignored jabs at her that he’s made. Remember the old adage, people: “United we stand; divided we fall.” Let’s rally behind the Democrat nominee, whomever s/he may be, and remember that whatever else we may be, Republican is not what we are.

Popular vote as of May 24, 2008
These figures INCLUDE Florida and Michigan, as they were fairly and legitimately earned by Senator Hillary Clinton, and have been validated by the respective Secretary’s of State.
Clinton 17,424,437
Obama 17,258,236
Total Diff. +166,201 (Clinton)
Pct. Diff. +0.45% (Clinton)
Above figures from RealClearPolitics.com
So, why SHOULD Hillary quit NOW?
Who do you think will be leading when the dust settles?
Hint – See below:
Combined population of Montana and South Dakota = 1,752,039
Population of Puerto Rico = 8,086,459

Which Democratic candidate is more electable?
Consider this:
This is how the Electoral College stands as of May 24, 2008, showing strengths of Clinton vs. Obama, based on their results. For those who have not understood, this is not a head-to-head matchup, but rather a side-by-side comparison.
This assumes a winner-take-all primary/caucus vote takes all Electoral votes for each state. The totals immediately below are WITHOUT any consideration of the states of Florida and Michigan.
Clinton 264
Obama 224
But with Florida and Michigan:
Clinton 308
Obama 224
With just Florida added, which was won by Clinton, fairly and squarely, the Electoral College Vote is:
Clinton 291 (includes Kentucky)
Obama 224 (includes Oregon)
Assuming the following victories, based on current polls, with Clinton winning NOTHING ELSE, and Obama winning South Dakota, and Montana, the totals would then be, still without Florida and Michigan:
Clinton 264 (includes Kentucky)
Obama 230 (includes Oregon, Montana, and South Dakota)
On June 4, 2008, with Florida, Michigan and Kentucky for Clinton, and, being charitable, with Oregon, South Dakota and Montana for Obama:
Clinton 308
Obama 230
Please note that it takes 270 Electoral College votes to win the General Election.
Whether or not the vote turns out as indicated, I firmly believe the above analysis more than amply demonstrates which of the Democratic candidates is in a better position to be the stronger candidate in the General Election.
P.S. – One last thought about this Electoral College Vote analysis; in it I gave Senator Obama full credit for the state caucuses he won. However, it should be noted that there are not any caucuses to be won in the Big Leagues during the General Election. There are only PRIMARIES, WINNER-TAKE-ALL.
And I am sure the “Super Delegates” are aware of that.

Posted by: Yavo Lem | May 24, 2008, 9:02 am 9:02 am

Things are NOT as they are made to appear.
For all the talk about “Super Delegates”, there is nothing “Super” about them. Just as everyone of us, they have one vote each. Their endorsement is just that, an endorsement. It is not a vote. They are not supposed to come into play unless there is a deadlocked convention, and in that case, they are expected to exercise their BEST JUDGMENT to cast their votes for that candidate they, in view of their extensive experience and political wisdom, think would be able to WIN the General Election. They are not supposed to be endorsing this or that candidate, BEFORE THEY VOTE AT THE CONVENTION. To do otherwise is to be false to the trust and responsibility that has been placed in and on them.
It would be better at this point if all the bickering supporters of each candidate looked at the number of ACTUAL PLEDGED DELEGATES allocated to their candidate on the basis of primaries and caucuses won. Those figures, as of May 24, 2008 (NY Times web site), for those who truly follow politics are:
Obama 1,485
Clinton 1,421
Diff. +64 (Obama)
Of the “surveyed” “Super Delegates”, of which there are approx. 795, there are at least 212.5 who have not “endorsed” any candidate, which is as it was intended to be. Again, an “endorsement” does not necessarily translate into a convention vote, since in theory “Super Delegates” are supposed to represent the wisdom of the party and are expected to be above the fray. Those who have endorsed, really should be stripped of their position and replaced by those who will act as intended. However, that is the responsibility of the DNC, which so far, has proven inadequate to discipline its own members.
The bottom line, “Super Delegate” endorsements should not be counted by candidates claiming that such an “endorsement” makes this person into a PLEDGED DELEGATE, for that is NOT THE CASE, and to think otherwise is to delude oneself and one’s followers. It is also wrong for the media to even report what “Super Delegates” are doing now, as they do not even come into play unless and until there is a DEADLOCKED CONVENTION.
However, there is nothing to prevent partisans from ‘counting chickens before they hatch”, nor is there anything to prevent the media from playing games with gullible people to increase interest in these silly stories.
As Yogi Berra once said, “It ain’t over, ’til it’s over”. And this fight is a long way from over.

All of you Obama lovers should take a very, very hard look at the very first post in this commentary. It is a fact and will remain a fact in November that Obama is NOT an electable candidate. The white middle class vote is the key vote in any election in this country. Dems and Republicans alike, as well as many independents fall into this category and Obama is not liked by the vast majority of this demographic. Nominate a candidate who can win Ohio and Florida, and the Republicans are back where they belong, on the street. No candidate since JFK has lost two out of the key 3 swing states(Penn., Ohio and Florida) and won the election. Obama is leading only in Pennsylvania, and by a whisker thin margin. You do the math.

All of you who think Mr. Obama is going to get in front of his teleprompter and raise his arms and give some uplifting speach that will change the minds of the white middle class voter, think again. And if this is the top story in the news(Hillary’s innocent comment about RFK), I’d hate to see what’s the second and third story.

Posted by: JRS | May 24, 2008, 9:16 am 9:16 am

First of all. There are paid Obama Bloggers on here.
Second, Hillary was clearly reminding people how elections go through June.
Why does the media want her out by June?
She is just discussing that.
The obamedia and obama camp is just taking this as a poke against obama. This is stupid that the media is playing on it. Shame on the media.

This is exactly what she wanted…a conversation about Obama being assasinated.

Posted by: cj-delhi ny | May 24, 2008, 9:21 am 9:21 am

It is quite obvious that the liberal Obama supporters have never once served in a branch of the US Military. Or to be a tad more specific, held a MOS of which women were NOT allowed to hold.
On behalf of those of us that have, I am just going to inform the ill-informed on a few simple things.
We have been trained in the art of killing very effectivly from a very long distance away. 2500 meters to be exact. The business end of that shot never hears a thing, ever. Using nothing other than a rifle. Now that happens to be a “special” rifle, but a rifle none-the-less. And a rifle that is legal for any US citizen to own. Meaning with some fire discipline and some practice anyone could make such a shot.
These particular rifles also have the penetration power to fire through one inch plate steel and still hit the target. Body armor, vehicles, “bullet proof glass” doesn’t do any good.
There are some on here that state that those of us with this ability don’t have the “guts” or the mindset. This is why I stated that you have never been in service or even around those of us that do this. Here’s a tip for you, we do it ALL the time in combat, it is our job. So claiming that someone doesn’t have the “guts” is pathetic. It is almost like you are daring someone to do it.
Why explain that? There are blogs on here that think that the only way to pull off a job is to get close, using a handgun. Or that it takes some “maniac” or some liberal feel-good term to describe those of us that have done this for our country. You wouldn’t even know that I have a personal kill count of 84. Am I bothered? Not at all. I am honored and proud of my service.
We are NOT unstable. We have a life here too that includes wives and children. So your stereotype is probably wrong again.
Why is this important to the title of this blog? There is a HUGE number of ‘us’ that flat out do NOT trust Obama. From his father’s religion to his unpatriotic acts and speech to his friends of our enemies and our allies enemies. That is what our distrust comes from, not from his ‘color’.
Obama can be president, maybe a good one, then again maybe not. I do not trust nor fall for the simple slogans of ‘change’, ‘hope’ and ‘yes we can’ as some sort of precursor of electability.
We will be watching, like with all Presidents. You see, we have all taken an oath. An oath to defend this country from enemies both foreign and domestic. It has been known that America can never be defeated in an invasion. The way to defeat us is from within. There is a large number of us that are watching and will not allow the defeat or destruction of America. That is defending the US Constitution as I have sworn to do so as well as my legal duty to do so.

Some people need to understand the US Constitution stating all men are equal and entitled to their pursuits also included African Americans’, Asian Americans, Mexican Americans, European Americans, any American citizen and a Woman’s right to run for the Presidency of the United States. There is a lurking belief that the Constitution and the forefathers only want Whites to be President..no, no, they want the most able person who can work in the interest of the United States locally and internationally to bring the best fruits for its citizens to be the President of the United States. Should Obama win the elections this will be a clear message that in the future only the ablest American will be able to hold the Presidency and it is not going to be an easy ride to become President anymore that is: Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton etc. era must go!

At this moment in time we are in a slow political news cycle so this story becomes bigger than it needs to be. HRC clearly said something stupid and I’ll attribute it to the desperation she seems to be feeling in her now delusional run for the nomination. The DEMS that want her out of the race reason that she has been ,by any rational bearing, defeated and the race against McCain needs to begin.Nothing more. Nothing historical about it.

I was not too concerned for Obama’s safety, or at least not more than any other candidate or officeholder, until I read the earlier post by Guardian, May 24 at 10:14 a.m. about military kill power and defending our country from enemies, foreign or domestic. This sounded like a threat if I ever read one. Guardian, please clear this up.
I am an Obama supporter, senior citizen female, and not overly fond of Hillary, but I do not think she meant any harm. I’m sick and tired of the media gossipmongers looking for new meat every day. Definitely praying for November to get here. Thanks.

Yup, Clinton is actually going backwards and losing delegates. So whose assassinating whose campaign?
I don’t think Clinton meant anything sinister in her remarks, but she isn’t making herself look good to the Super Del’s, which she needs if she’s gonna take this to the floor.

Here we go again! Let’s stick to the issues here. There will NEVER be the totally right candidate for anyone living in this country! In terms of harm for either candidate, THEY KNOW WHAT THE RISKS ARE….! IF THEY DIDN’T KNOW, THEY WILL NOT BE RUNNING FOR OFFICE!
BUT THE MAIN ISSUE ARE THE ISSUES!!!
In terms of the Republican party, do you really want to see another one of “Bush’s Boys” get into the oval office????? If this happens, many more of us will be out of jobs! That’s the working class of American people, black, white, red, pink, brown or what ever your color are!!!!!! Gas prices will continue to get higher!!!!! We will stll be in war with IRAQ and even IRAN!!!! Foreclosures will continue to sky rocket more than what they already are!!!! The American dollar will continue to shrink!!!!!! You will be at risk for loosing your health insurance!!!! The rich will continue to get richer while you continue to pay more in taxes!!!! The middle class American will become lower class Americans!!!! WHAT OTHER DISEASTERS DO YOU WANT TO SEE IF ANOTHER ONE OF “THOSE KIND” GET INO THE WHITEHOUSE!!!!!!
Clearly you can see that I am a democrat and frankly I do not care which democratic candidate gets in because the republicans need to GET OUT!!!
Another point of view to consider is the this country is in such economic and social mess that it will take more than just a president to correct the problems that the Bush administration created. He/she will need a team of Americans to work with them in making the wrongs of America right!!!
Think about that and wake the hell up!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Rova | May 24, 2008, 11:40 am 11:40 am

Just when you think that things can not possibly get any worse in America some people actually want to elect Obama which would be NO different than leaving in the puppet (Bush) we already have. The Media and Powerfull Corporations would have another puppet (Obama) to screw the American people some more. All this proves that even smart people can be complete fools. The media and the powerfull corporations just may pull it off again and fool the people into electing another media created puppet! We get exactly what we deserve.

Rova,
Great post! I wish more people here would put this all into prespective and get a grip.
If we don’t get the Repubs out of office we wont know exactly what has been done to this country under the Bush years. And we can’t fix what we dont know about.

Isn’t it so wonderful hearing these Republican FearMongers trying to incite strife between the Clinton supporters and the Obama supporters?
You can always tell, too. They tend to SHOUT when their message is weak. Trying to point out the inaccuracy in their argument, the louder and more fervently they SHOUT.
Why would the Republican FearMongers want to inflame the Democratic issue so venomously? Because their intent is to deflect focus from the Republican hypocrisy in their convictions.
Neither Clinton or Obama is a Left Wing or a Right Wing radical. They are trying to improve the lives of mainstream Americans. Both Obama and Clinton are strongly against sending American jobs overseas, a stance McCain doesn’t share. Both Clinton and Obama want all Americans to enjoy a quality of life, not just the elite few making huge profits on the backs of the average worker, like John McCain does. The argument should not be who should be the Democratic nominee, instead efforts should focus on defeating the Republican burden that average Americans are now forced to bear.
A vote for John McCain is clearly a vote for four more years of George Bush – you know, the guy who got us into this mess. George Bush is now supporting McCain, and McCain is actively embracing Bush.
Put the petty bickering aside, and focus on the bigger problem. America is on the wrong track thanks to Bush, and McCain is offering the same future. It doesn’t matter whether its Obama or Clinton who defeats McCain, so long as we have a Democrat for President.

Posted by: Alfred | May 24, 2008, 11:56 am 11:56 am

I actually would think Bush and Cheney are in greater danger because of all the carnage in their wake. There are some racist and possibly a few Clinton nutters who would love if something happened to Obama, but I don’t think it is going to happen. What she said is pretty bad. These politicians should just keep their mouths shut. Most have nothing good to say unless their last name is Gravel, Paul, Nader, Kucinich or the like.

Hillary is the prime example of someone who just doesn’t know when its long over. She is still in shock that someone actually won the nomination instead of her. She is walking and talking in a daze, and it will take a long time for her to sink in that she is finished both as a presidential candidate and the end of the Clinton era. I always liked the Clintons, but this nomination fight has brought out the worst of Hillary for all to see, and my respect for her has all but evaporated.

Looking over the postings offered by Matt, it appears we have a Republican amongst us.
Curious why he would try to claim why a vote for a Democrat is a vote for Bush? Did Bush change political parties?
Did a Democrat lead us into a war without cause? Aren’t Bush and Cheney both Oil Barons? Isn’t John McCain embracing Bush? Are you happy to be paying $4 a gallon for gas, and letting your children go hungry because the policies Bush enabled has led to this?
Clearly this comment is from someone who has already made up their mind to vote for McCain. There is no other conclusion that can be drawn from his comments.

A,
Do you have sons? Grandsons?
Be prepared to stand at a cold airport hanger for their flagged draped coffin to be off-loaded after they died in action in all these wars McCain wants to wage. He has all but said a draft is likely, because the military enlistment is at an all time low.
Hope you have great health insurance, because you cant get any with McCains plan. And he wants to “privatize” health insurance the same way the did with student loans (interest rates under that plan went from 4% to 25% in 4 years…YIPEE!!)
Hope you enjoy watching your job be shipped off to Thailand, McCain wants to INCREASE tax breaks to large corporations. Thank God, because we all KNOW that the HUGE Corporations need more of MY money.

This is a nation of laws and of rules.
Without law and rules to guide the activities of a society, chaos reigns; no peace, no progress and no prosperity.
Truism:- Campaign ugly and govern even uglier!
It is a historical fact: Those who would campaign by flaunting the laws and rules WILL govern by flaunting the US Constitution, Nixon, Bush, etc, etc.
So, if a candidate cannot be trusted as a campaigner, then she SURELY cannot and SHOULD NOT be trusted to govern anyone.
Would anyone trust Hellary to end the witless and wasteful Iraq war and not expand it?
No wise person would trust her, given her historical and menopausal lack of principle and integrity and lack of vision.
