Obama Looks Beyond Wright

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: Barack Obama admits the fallout from the controversy surrouding his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, has not been helpful to his presidential campaign in the lead-up to the Indiana and North Carolina primaries on Tuesday.

"We have had a rough couple of weeks, I won’t deny that," Obama told reporters at a press conference Friday in Indianapolis, "We’ve had to fight thorough over the last week an awful lot of noise."

Recent poll numbers have shown that 1 in 5 voters say this controversy has made them unsure about him as a candidate and Obama admitted that the controversy might take a toll next week, saying, "I don’t think that what happened with Reverend Wright was helpful. I don’t think there’s any denying that."

Since giving a stern and somber press conference on Tuesday in which he broke ties with Wright, Obama said he’s now getting back to focusing on issues, rather than the controversy that he says has been drama distracting to the American people.

Obama said his plan for the closing days –- and beyond the Indiana and North Carolina primaries –- is to not get bogged down in the back and forth between his opponents that makes him lose focus.

"I do think that when we start getting drawn into a tit-for-tat, look what he said, look what she said argument, and then we lose focus from where we should, from what this campaign should be about," he said.

Regarding Clinton’s fate in the close election, Obama diplomatically he said that he would let Clinton make her own decisions about whether or not to drop out depending on the results of Tuesday’s primaries.

"If she is behind in the delegate count," Obama said before then stopping mid-though, then beginning again, "You know, that’s not what we’re spending a lot of time worrying about. What I want to do is make sure I’m finishing strong."

Obama will NEVER get beyond Wright because he will never be able to adequately explain how he listened to hate-filled sermons for twenty years. No amount of race-baiting on his part, or on the part of his surrogates and supporters will ever change what the public already knows.
Rise Hillary, Rise!

Mr. Obama has adjusted his stories (lack of candidness and truthfulness) on the topic of Rev. Wright too many times to believe. Senator Obama stated publically that he never heard Rev. Wright make any controversial statements. Then he later stated that he did hear some over the years he’s been in church. Which is true and which is false? He gives a speech shown on national television saying “I can no more disown him (Jeremiah Wright) than I can disown my white grandmother.” — Barack Obama, Philadelphia, March 18, 2008. Now in North Carolina he says the comments were “shockingly divisive and destructive”. What comments is he talking about? We all heard the shocking, hatred for American and the white people several months ago, this is not a new issue! The truth is that Mr. Obama has just realized that the American public now realizes that Rev. Wright sells racial hatred and therefore Obama’s judgment is now in question. So the new message is now rejection, dump the reverend not because Rev. Wright said disgusting and degrading things about America and the white population, but because it clearly now shows a lack of sound judgment for a very LONG TIME on Mr. Obama’s part. Yes, as he says today no more “silly” discussions, let’s stick to the issues. No more talk about my character. The issue today is the gas tax relief and I say no because it will make me look like I am pandering for votes (don’t want to make me look bad) and I am telling everyone that it will only save them some $30.00. I would love him to tell a trucker filling up his “big rig” this story. What is wrong with trying to help out the American public while you try to figure out how to best solve this problem…..no, I guess it is better to let it reach “crisis” proportions before you do anything. By the way, Mr. Obama $30.00 is a lot of money to me on social security, maybe nothing but a small “tip” for you for a dinner out.

Every one of the remaining primaries will demonstrate how disgusted the electorate is with Obama and his “uncle” Wright. Their twenty year relationship is indefensible, and so is Obama’s reluctance to leave the church.
Hillary will stay in the race, and will be the nominee.

don’t think so. the dnc is sick and tired of her political maneuverings. the numbers are against her and there’s no way they’re going against the numbers. not if they want to win in november.

@ counting crows: What’s really boring is the desperation of the Obama camp. When the polls drop, bring on the race-baiting, name calling, and ad hominine attacks on Hillary, and her supporters.

Unfortunately, whites won’t forget his uncle pastor too soon.. It will hunt him all the way to Nov…
Simply, Obama can’t win whites and he can’t win Nov…

IT’S OVER HILLARY SUPPORTERS !!
The ‘establishment’ has already determined the Obama will be the democratic nominee. You can thank Dean, Pelosi and company for that.
All that’s left for you to do is fall in line behind Obama and be good little democrats. All for the sake of a broken party!

The Obamabots are fooling them selves again.. No we can not forget the Wright thing! NO WE CAN’T!
Obama does not know how to lie in a straight line about the Wright thing!
Every time his story changes Obama says the wrong thing!
Obama is not wright and wright is wrong!
Obama can not make this disaster go away, it will eat him alive.
YES IT WILL!

@ Oscar Meyer:
While I certainly feel a kinship with my fellow Hillary supporters, we aren’t the same person, and we aren’t paid for our support. Unlike some Obama bloggers, we demonstrate our support for Hillary for free, and we try our best to remain respectful of others who don’t share our views. (Although, we have, and will continue to defend ourselves against specious slams by Obama bloggers.)

So, he thinks he has wiped the slate clean and go forth as the clean heroic torch bearer? To paraphrase Rev. Wright’s retort to America, “the chickens are coming home to roost!” Twenty years of listening to the rantings, the hatred, and the disunity themes, you would have to be totally disengenuous to run for President on a theme of CHANGE and UNITY. Words are not “just words” as he said. They have a way of coming back to haunt you.

Bloggers help with the answers……The most important questions still remain. Please someone ask Senator Obama. (1)Why does Barack Obama belong to a church known to be a leader in a seemingly radical, black-centric, movement known as black liberation theology? (2)How will Mr. Obama’s association with this movement influence his beliefs, ideas, and actions as president of the United States? (3) Does Mr. Obama know the principles, values and teachings of black liberation theology—the foundation of his church?

hmmm. don’t think the obama camp is desperate. we’re just calmly biding our time. what IS desperate, though, is someone totally trashing the seriousness of the iraq war and the efforts of our kids over there by telling a funny – yeah, she was actually smiling – little story about her sniper fire experience. misspeak? an inane word to describe a disgusting lie told to bolster one’s so-called experience. if i ever had the inclination to support her, that crushed it, that put her in the game-playing, politics as usual, win-no-matter-what-you-have-to-say-or-do camp. make no mistake, if somehow she manages to wrest the nomination away from obama i will vote for her but i’ll be sick to my stomach for weeks afterwards. however, i’m not stocking up on tums in anticipation of this unhappy event.

Regarding the Wright controversy: Obama attended a church whose pastor made controversial statements. Obama said he completely rejects those views, yet that is not good enough for some. The argument is that if Obama really does reject those statements, then he should have left the church.
If that is the standard for Obama, then by that logic every Catholic should leave the Catholic church, because it is not enough for Catholics to be outraged by church officials who at the highest levels covered up the criminal and morally reprehensible actions of priests molesting kids.
Which is worse? Wright saying outrageous things, or Bishops who simply transferred molester priests to other parishes so they can molest more kids? It’s pretty clear to me.
This is a double standard and has NOTHING to do with the problems that face this country.
If the electorate does not vote for Obama based on his pastor comments, then it is no different than voting for Bush because you’d rather have a beer with him. This is not a good way of determining who should lead this country. Just look at what the drinking buddy test has gotten us over the past eight years.

Thomas, you are correct in what you say.—–”Which is worse? Wright saying outrageous things, or Bishops who simply transferred molester priests to other parishes so they can molest more kids? It’s pretty clear to me.”—– But it is not clear to me, the question remains —How will Mr. Obama’s association with this movement influence his beliefs, ideas, and actions as President of the United States? I think this is a legitimate question. If you knew Bishops or Priests were going to commit further crimes because of their philosophy that would be okay with you? The values and teachings of this church are radical and have been for years. Does anyone think I am wrong asking this question as a US citizen?

Posted by: Anne | May 2, 2008, 4:20 pm 4:20 pm

As for all the egregious comments from Obama supporters about white voters being racists, it isn’t about race. Obama’s race has little to do with people not voting for him, or his dramatic slip in the polls. The Governor of my state happens to be African American (David Patterson), and he’s supporting Hillary. Is he being racist by not supporting Obama? Numerous prominent African Americans are also not supporting Obama, and countless more have questioned Obama’s choice of pastor and friends. Are all of them racists? No, they aren’t. Neither are many of the millions of Americans who do not support Obama because of his twenty-year relationship with the militant and racially separatist Rev. Wright, and his long time friendships with unsavory characters like Bill Ayers and Tony Rezko.
The problem is Obama’s questionable judgment by maintaining relationships with people whose anti-American sentiments and actions are reprehensible. Obama’s friends speak volumes about what he believes and his ability to make good decisions.
From all that has recently been disclosed about the attitudes that Obama and his friends share involving working class whites, older Americans, church-goers, gun owners, people from small towns, and Jews, the question isn’t whether certain voters are prejudiced against Obama, but whether he’s prejudiced against them.

@ BKMC:
You need to do some homework.
Obama’s 2007 tax return shows 4.2 million dollars in income. The difference between Obama and Hillary is that Hillary has never lied about being rich and she donated all 10.5 Million in income from her books to charitable causes, per the tax returns over the past 8 years. Divide it up and see for yourself: She averaged 1.3 million per year in income from her books and donated all of it. Clinton is only rich because of Bill and has been forthright in giving back to others, while Obama has not. His tax returns show nearly all of his less than 1% in donations were to TUCC – a church who spends its money giving Rev. Wright a $1M home and a $10M open credit line unscrutinized by law. Take off those rose-colored glasses and look hard at the facts. Obama is not who he professes to be and is fooling half the democratic electorate.

Anne,
Your question, “How will Mr. Obama’s association with this movement influence his beliefs, ideas, and actions as President of the United States?” is legitimate. So what remains is whether or not your believe his answer. Obama has, in no uncertain terms, completely rejected Wright’s statements. He has been up front and honest about a difficult issue. Either you believe him or you won’t, and the only way to judge whether or not he is telling the truth is a judgement about his integrity. His response to Wright has been thoughtful and measured. When Wright had the chance to admit that his more controversial statements were wrong (AIDS, etc.) and didn’t, Obama broke with him and rightly so.
I happen to have a perspective on this church because I have a friend who attended it when she was a girl growing up in Chicago. She describes the church as rather mainstream and not radical at all. She doesn’t remember ever hearing comments like Wright’s. It’s a large, non-denominational church that attracts not just blacks, but whites too.
Wright’s comments are certainly incendiary, but he doesn’t necessarily speak in a general way to the beliefs of the congregation members any more than Pat Robertson’s explanation that Katrina happened because of America’s tolerance of homosexuality speaks for Christians who listen to his program.
And by the way, the “God damn America” clip that has so many people upset was said in the context of historical racial injustice in America. That is correct. God damn America for its racist past. The other stuff Wright has said is crazy, and his congregation knows it.
The problem is this clip is easy fodder for politicians. It’s “gotcha” journalism.
Obama has spoken about this forcefully, eloquently and believably. Hillary flatly lied several times about her trip to Bosnia. That doesn’t speak well to her integrity. Conversely, Obama’s handling of why he shouldn’t be held accountable for another person’s words has been very credible.

Naive, boneheaded, proud of America for the first time in my life, did not hear what he was saying for twenty years, gave back all the money tied to Rezko or all that we could determine, had him look at the house, bought part of the lot next door from his wife for “fair” value, he and I and our wives spent the day at his lake house, not really a close friend, fundraisers–cannot remember attending or meeting Middle Eastern guests…….do you get the picture? Just words? Words to believe in.

If any of you where black in the first place living in the time Rev. Wright you may have the right to judge what a man under oppression would have to say. Being that the majority aren’t, it’s easy to put blame on the Reverends rantings because it makes white people uncomfortable having to hear about the issues of black America. I admit that Rev. Wright said some pretty ridiculous things, however it’s easy for the wolf to attack the sheep, in this case being a black person being the sheep obviously. I quote my own father who said that who is caucasion and lives in a small town in the U.S.”The Reverend Wright speech gives white people a chance to get uppity and snobbish” People like to hide the fact that there’s no problems or racism in America. On top of that I didn’t see the Rev. on the polls anywhere, I heard Obama’s going to be on them though. His message is trying TO unify. But it seems like this just gives an excuse for not voting for a black man because people are scared of having a president that would bridge the gap between a lot of people in America and all over the world. Obama would run circles around Mcain. As for Clinton who has always been fed with a silver spoon, it’s easy to critique anything a black person says. At least Obama speaks from his heart something the media likes to play over and over so people are turned off by him.

Grogia.
Im sure Obama knows everything about his pastor and the black liberation thealogy, James E Cone’s books were required reading for church members. And the truth about slavery is that it was started and created by very ancient gods in Africa, and was a normal system for thousand of years. These ancient gods slowly became insane , mad and evil. They had no cure for the madnes, and they left the Earth planet. But it dont matter about Obama or his pastor or church, Obama will never be president,we could not listen to his stemmerings for the next 4 years. And he can never change anything, only Hillary can turn the economy around.

TWO FACES OF HILLARY
When Bill Clinton, a husband, father, President, outspoken figure and spiritual confidante to Hillary betrayed her trust she didn’t “disown” him.
Yet Hillary responded to Rev. Wright’s remarks saying that she would leave his church, but she didn’t leave her husband over conduct much worse, being humiliated, offended and outraged.!

It’s ironic that another man’s words have become Sen Obama’s words. It’s ironic that another man’s antics have somehow become Sen Obama’s antics. It’s nothing that Sen Obama has done or said himself but the whole guilt my association seems to follow him. It’s fair if all candidates are held to the same standard. Yet, there seems to be a standard for Sen Obama and a standard for everyone else. I wonder if there was something, oh let’s say Sen Clinton’s minister going to jail for molesting a seven year old made the news. Would her minister get the same traction in the media as Rev Wright? I haven’t seen it aired nor mentioned. Would Sen Clinton’s be called into question because she didn’t leave the church? While I don’t condone what Rev Wright said I do however believe that all candidates ought to be measured by the same standard. If there are views stated by people which are associates of the candidates then spill everyone’s milk and not just Sen Obama’s. I look at in the sense that if Sen Obama thought he was running for president 10-15 years ago then maybe he would have made another church choice…or maybe not. I suppose we can always see the negative in someone if that’s what we are looking for and it’s all we see. Afterall, there are things that could be said about Sen Clinton and she’s married to someone that made some choices that really made his last years in the White House really “stink”. That’s off limits I suppose since it wasn’t Sen Clinton. Hmmm, the irony in that association

Posted by: Jack Goldenberg | May 3, 2008, 10:56 am 10:56 am

Here’s the truth. Rev. Wright provided the excuse that some people needed to not vote for Obama. You didn’t plan or want to vote for him in the first place. I’ve heard my preacher say things as well that as I reflect back on them would not be ideal in a Presidential campaign. Obama, I assume, wasn’t thinking about running for president even five years ago. You don’t always leave churches because of the words of a pastor. Secondly, Wright is/was a friend of the Clintons. There are pictures to prove it. Thirdly, some people’s obsession with one preacher is amazing. If this is all they have on Obama, that his minister is a 75-year old man who grew up during segregation, then I say we don’t even deserve someone as good as Obama because his opponents have much more baggage.

So true DS, that’s the issue in a nutshell….Obama has support from most of the super delegates in congress, people he has worked with on a daily basis, people who know him much better than we do, most of us only get bits and pieces of info fed to us from the media, a media that is trival and biased.

Posted by: Brien | May 3, 2008, 3:28 pm 3:28 pm

It cannot be the province of Mr. Obama to decide when he is “moving past” his association with Rev. Wright. this is a decision of the people.
If we are to dismiss Obamma’s connection to this person who prodly proclaims that America is the Worlds Terrorist, and chants “God damn America” in a context that unequivocally supports the worst possible understanding of his intent, Mr. Obamma must give us a rationale for this. What he has offered is simple disavowel only. You cannot have the depth of willing and intentional association with such an individual and simply just say I’m going to change the subject. In fact he leaned on the association with Rev. Wright to offer proof he is no longer a Muslim.
Then when it is politically expedient he claims that the closest of direct intentional associations is and should be severed. He says over and over again that Wrights views are not his, but actual objective evidence says the opposite, and he tries to change the subject.
Obama uses deceptive reasoning when he analogizes his somewhat racist white grandmother (which, like ones skin color is not a relationship that one actually chooses) to his fully consentual and intentional relationship with Wright. The American people do not judge a man for their family because they know no one gets to freely choose their parents or siblings, but they can and should judge the character of the man for his open free choices of assiciation, particularly when they are directly on point. Wright hates America, in a very racist, direct and unnaceptable way. I write this after listening to hours of Wrights words (in perfect context) fully willing for the sake of Black friends whom I love to see if this was nothing but sensationalist reporting. It is not, Wake Up!
This is not constructive criticizm of occasional bad policies (which is true of every country).
We all knew little about Obama in the beginning, he is a great speaker, and he is very charismatic. We now know enough to say at least that he must give a proper defense of Wright, not a simple disavowel.
We cannot stand for hatred of America and strong racist feelings in our elected officials regardless of the color of the man or woman who holds the views.
May God bless and protect America and our neighbors, and stop the mouth of those who hate!
Jon

Sen. Obama pledged to bring our whole nation together. But he can’t even put a lid on his old pal─ the wild and crazy church preacher! People are confused about Sen. Obama. He was closed to this man for twenty long years who’s so full of violent contempt for America. Rev. Wright was the one who got Sen. Obama into politics. “Oh, it was just a sound-bite!” They say. Michelle Obama has some titillating sound bites for us too! Sen. Obama pretends this was all new to him. That’s why Rev. Wright accused Sen. Obama for acting like “a politician!” Believe me, we haven’t heard the end of this. This will drag on and on. And the discussion of issues, arguments, complaints, tirades, that’s been festering in for years will go on endlessly, as always. Some people make a career out of indulging this sort of activity. Some use it for make others feel guilty, manipulate others. It pays off to be stuck forever in this sort of identity politics. They’ll find something disagreeable under every blade of grass! Harvard Prof. Orlando Patterson claimed that Sen. Clinton’s 3am ad was racist, in an op-ed article to the New York Times, and they published it! Can you believe this? These people make a living out of doing this sort of activity. And they teach others to do the same! And in the same breath they complain about lack of advancement. I truly think some of us should be putting ourselves out of business for the benefit of others. These are people unable to progress; they hinder others from making progress─ they are stuck forever in the darkness of their hearts and souls. Even in country like ours that gives so much hope and opportunity even to a penniless immigrant like myself─ who arrived with only four dollars in my pocket! We need a president who can pay attention to real issues. We have many crisis that impacting us; gas and food prices, housing crisis, two raging wars, deteriorating infrastructure, failing education, looming energy shortage, global warming, lack of healthcare, social security and pensions, debt and banking crisis, and so on and on. Our country’s standards have fallen dramatically; we are now 40th in infant mortality and 41th in life expectancy, in the world. We are on the slippery slope of decline. We’ don’t want to get stuck discussing Rev. Wright’s identity issues forever and ever. While we stuck in this sort of mud other nations are passing us by very quickly ─soon enough, it wouldn’t make much sense to be equal in a place like this that’s gone to pieces like Grucho Marx said! Let’s not get stuck with crazy Rev. Wright and his friends. It was only president Clinton who was able to stop the decline of our country. In fact we made solid progress during Clinton years; we had an impressive surplus of 450 Billion! We were prosperous at home and well respected around the world. Nobody I know can hold a candle to Bill Clinton for his service to our country and the world! Our country desperately needs the “Clinton Model” back in place. We can’t indulge in inexperienced Sen. Obama. Therefore, that’s why I’d choose Sen. Hillary Clinton to be my president!

The opinions expressed by Print Media and TV Talking Head represents their particular bias. Their “stories” are not News. They are gossip and opinion. As such, the most ill informed blogger on this site is just as valid as any Media source. Make up your own minds. The Media is dead.

He would like to look beyond Wright since the whole world has listened to his fuming hatred of the white race. Obama has low morals and character. I hope America will not be misled by this pretender!!
