Obama’s Big Cross Kentucky Flier

Some voters in Kentucky, where Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is expected to romp on Tuesday, have received a flier from the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., where the lanky Illinoisan is emphasizing his Christianity. (Update: The Obama campaign says this flier is not new, though it’s the first I’ve seen of it. I’m told it’s being distributed on a limited basis to faith groups.)

On the front of the flier is a photograph of Obama speaking from a pulpit with a large cross hanging on the wall behind him.

"Faith. Hope. Change. Barack Obama for President. ‘My faith teaches me that I can sit in church and pray all I want, but I won’t be fulfilling God’s will unless I go out and do the Lord’s work’. – Barack Obama"

Inside, it also mentions that as a "community organizer in neighborhoods devastated by the closing of local steel mills" the senator "forged a profound connection with the people of these communities. At their encouragement, he visited a local church one Sunday. That day, Obama felt a beckoning of the spirit and accepted Jesus Christ into his life."

Over at CBN, our friend David Brody writes: "I know the conservative policy purists will say that Obama is liberal and therefore Evangelicals won’t buy his ‘Evangelical speak’. Not so fast. Remember, many people vote based on an emotional connection to a candidate or if they can relate to that person. Obama may need to work on this perception that he is ‘elite’ but when he talks about Jesus and the Bible and the fact that he’s a sinner, it makes him more real and in the process, more electable too."

The mainstream media’s reaction has been quite different from the reaction when former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, invoked Christ in a TV ad.

Of course, the context is different. One senses that half the battle Obama is waging here is to let voters know he’s not Muslim.

But still, why the different reaction?

This is really going to Obama’s head.
I think he needs a very long Vacation.

It’s because Huckabee’s ad was a cynical attempt to remind conservative voters that he’s a Christian (just in case you forgot that he’s a pastor) and doing it in an indirect manner: put the cross there + deny that it’s a cross = even more media attention.
Obama’s, on the other hand, is pretty damn blatant about what he’s trying to do, and it has a lot more to do with counteracting the Muslim whispers than trying to woo conservative Christian voters. Obama is seen as fighting back (which the Democrats have been demanding of their candidates for the last few cycles), Huckabee was seen as pandering.

If *any* Republican candidate made such an overt religious reference, he or she would be raked over the coals for weeks.

Mr. Obama went to church regularly for 20 years or so. There are issues about the character of the minister, but Mr. Obama’s stated position on religion is consistent with election year politics. It’s not possible to know what is truely in a man’s heart, but Mr. Obama seems sincere about his current faith.

OBAMA AND HIS KENTUCKY CROSS….ans.
Obama is making a direct appeal to Kentucky evangelicals with flyers that mention his conversion to Christianity and highlights the words FAITH- HOPE – CHANGE and a big old cross. Remember Mike Huckabee’s supposed subliminal cross in his Christmas campaign ad? Well, Obama campaign ditches the subliminal and goes for the in your face cross……….
The verse from the Bible is: FAITH. HOPE. LOVE….
After being told so, numerous times, I guess Obama thinks he is “The Great One” and that he can re-write the Bible. How sanctimonious to steal from the Bible and twist the message for a political stunt?…(CBN+Kentuckian)

I view this flier as a mean to dispel the notion Obama’s a Muslim.
Believe it or not, there are people out there in spite of Rev. Wright… believes Obama’s a Muslim.
Now that we’re in the General Election mode, it’s time for him to address these issues. Great Start.

Obama, pandering to Christians. How pathetic. Interesting you dont hear anything about Odinga’s relationship to Obama. (Obamas cousin, Obama helped campaign for Odinga)Odinga is anti-christian and is determeined to reinstate Shia law. But I guess that doesnt reflect on Obamas views on religion, right?
If he had any real ideas for the future of America, he could talk about those. Instead, all he has is Personality Politics. What do you expect from a guy that wrote his own script… and the public bought it hook line and sinker? An autobiography is not fact, it may be based entirely on the writer’s (selective/arrogant) memory………. and thats all Obama and his fans have on the resume. How sad for those youth (and the pathetic following of adults that figure Youth are somehow more capable of making decisions on political matters!)

MY FELLOW AMERICANS……Barack Obama has finally crossed the line!!!!!!!!! Obama has gone too far!!! He has insulted every Vietnam Vet in West Virginia and Kentucky. Obama has no right to finally stick on his flag pin now, stage all those flags behind him and attempts to align himself or address the Vietnam War. WV. and KY. are largely vets, patriots, Bluegrass people, and we revere God, Country, and the American Flag and take this subject very seriously. I am sickened to see Obama act like he knows what it means to be a Vietnam Vet. Obama has no idea what patriotism means. No matter what the other states say that voted for Obama, KY. and WV. say it DOES matter who Obama aligns himself with and in bed with. WV. and KY. are going to say it LOUD AND CLEAR with our vote is for Hillary. Obama can bypass us with his trash talk. I for one am appalled and sicken by the God, Country, Jesus, and the Flag hating states and superdelegates that voted for Obama; they are betrayers of this great country. What an insult and a phony, putting that Flag pin on now just for WV. And KY.!! Many Vets tell me they wish Obama and his God, Country, and the Flag hating bedfellows were in Vietnam with them so that they would have left them face down in a rice patty for disrespecting God, Country, and the American Flag, which they fought and died for without batting an eye. So we say: NOT God Dam America, But God Dam Barack Obama. KY. and WV. are down to earth, common sense, patriotic states and are not fooled by empty talk. We believe in blind faith only when it comes to God and Jesus, which Obama likes to think he is, but isn’t either. So do the honorable thing Obama and pass up West Virginia and Kentucky. You’re Not Welcome Here!

Obama is right to remind people that he is a Christian. Generally, there is nothing wrong with anyone (even a politician) expressing his beliefs.
In this particular case, it is essential, because his political foes (both Democrats and Conservatives) have been unfairly expressing or implying that he is Muslim, and far to many voters mistakenly believe he is Muslim…and that misunderstanding is hurting his electability.
That’s just dirty politics and it’s not fair.
Senator Obama is a longstanding and committed Christian.
He is right to set the record straight and let people know that he is a Christian. Again, there isn’t anything wrong with that.

The difference between Huckabee and Obama? Huckabee is seen as a preacher, and therefore more likely to impose his own particular religious views on America. That isn’t a popular idea with most Americans (see presidential campaigns of Jesse Jackson).
Obama’s religious beliefs aren’t grounded in a particular denomination’s theology, but that all are equally the children of God, and the social view of the Sermon on the Mount.

OK-this one really makes me want to throw up on a Sunday. Before I do, I have just a few questions. We heard about the “big cross” but I haven’t seen the flyer. 1.How big is the “newly added” cross? 2.Were the flags there too? 3.Was there enough room to fit all of the props behind his “preacher” prop podium? 4.Did someone remember to put the halo on him? 5.Do you think he will campaign now with a “co-ordinating” flag pin with a newly added “cross” necklace? 6.Is this the “CHANGE” right before our eyes? 7. Does this just feel like another bad reality show?

What are you going to believe, a slick political flyer or the candidate’s own words about clinging to religion? As far as the flag pin, I would have thought better of him if he had stuck to his principles of why he didn’t wear it, so much for commitment. What an expedient politician – nothing more, nothing less.

the name calling in these comments is just amazing. Mostly (not all), it seems to be from the Obama supporters. Disagreeing with Obama, or pointing out perceived faults, should be acceptable. If one disagrees, he or she should try using reason, and not name calling. Calling people bad names and mocking them seldom wins them over to your side.

Posted by: Buford Gooch | May 18, 2008, 1:07 pm 1:07 pm

So why is Obama invoking “god’s work” in a political flier???? Wow… that makes me suspicious in that he really means it and will do “god’s work” as President (as opposed to work for the American people) or that it is political pandering. Either way, it is disturbing and a real turn off.
What this brochure also does is that it reminds people he sat in Wright’s church for 20 years.
People who think Obama is Muslim were never going to vote for him anyway.

All of the comments and news articles are not going to effect the issues facing the American People. Very simple, if you want to continue on the path with a wide gap in salaries, then vote Republican, vote for high gas prices, homes processions, and Iraq War. If you want to assist the middle and lower, then vote Democrat. See what happened, when the right wing placed Bush in office.

If I remember correctly, 17 percent of the voters who were polled coming out of the voting booths stated they did not vote for Senator Obama because they believed he was a Muslim. I do not know Kentucky’s percentage; however, it is clear Senator Obama is counteracting this erroneous beleif and he has every right to do so.
So many people in these two states appear to be uninformed in the realities of the campaign and the the candidates; they also appear to represent the pre-70s beliefs of racism and bigotry. In West Virginia, many people said they would never vote for a….long pause….man of color. These folks are looking at the skin color and not at the candidate himself. I find this extremely bigotted and very sad. Some of these states just have not progressed with the rest of America.

Kentucky show’em that your small town people are proud and plenty and not to be reckon with. I guess Obama doesn’t have any shame, most of these voters don’t like you because they see right thru you. What makes you think that because you are close to be nominated that they will waste their vote and give it to you? You may be winning now, but you won’t in November. Hey weren’t you the one telling people how the cling to religion because of their anger, now you are using religion to get yourself some votes. Pathetic indeed and bigtime loser.

I find it obnoxious that the fundamentalists make all the politicians toe the line on their choice of spiritual practice. It is like having the Snopes trial, over and over. All the Republicans had to take it when some Bible thumper pressed each of them to profess LITERAL belief in every word of the Bible in the guy’s hand, during a debate on national tv.
Back in real life, archeologists have found several copies of New Testament books which pre-date the versions used to make the King James version and the ones in common use. Apparently the ones in common use are all FAKES. The ones in use are all changed from the originals, based on adding myths taken from the time of Alexander the Great and other ancient leaders, and plopped onto Jesus’s life, after he was long dead. Of course, since the entire process of Christianity and the idea that the murder of Jesus ‘saves us’ is based on faith, having actual books of the BIble which now contradict the ones in use, is ignored.
From my take on it, we are a nation ruled by fundementalists, fighting a war in the middle east, against other, Muslim fundementalists, and neither side has any sense, whatsoever.
I just happen to be on the planet with the rest of you. Please stop squandering our resources on useless wars and take it seriously to serve the poor, the homeless, and the young and the old. We could do it. Only you are all hypnotized by Richard Nixon to be against anything that is liberal or helpful to the masses. Oh well. Labels, like socialist and liberal, have you by the short hairs, and you apparently cant think for yourselves. I am astonished at the resistance to the suggestion by the Democrats that we have universal health care.
The opposition says we might have to stand in line.
Hmmm. 50 million people have no health care at all, but we should not address that because you might have to wait on line? And the other big reason against it is that your taxes would be higher if we have universal heath care and every one who can get in, can get free college. Hmmm. Do you think health care and college are FREE now?
Health care and college are expensive.
That is a Tax on the poor and the middle class, but you are hypnotized not to call it by its real name.
I am also disgusted that most fundementalists are so focused on personal, civil rights issues that are none of your business, but you ignore the WTO and its ways of running the USA.
I am particularly galled that you say nothing about the “legal fiction”, that a corporation now has the rights of a person. I suppose you dont even know what I am referring to.

Obama has the politician’s game down pat, doesn’t he? He panders, he defines hypocrisy, he complains that all who run ads against him are using “negativity”, “fear”, “racism”…and, by doing this, he certainly solidifies his liberal, young, & black base.
Some folks actually have done research on this campaign, and we see Obama as very intelligent, yes, but mostly, very ambitious. He likes to win, this is the only given.
Emil Jones propped Obama up in the Il Senate by listing Obama’s name on bills as a co-sponsor to pad his resume’, although Obama didn’t do work on these bills. Obama used procedural shenanigans to block other candidates from placing their names on the ballot in Il, so obviously, he won…that’s all that matters.
Why didn’t the press call Obama on his contradictory statements regarding his stance on the Iraq war? Why didn’t the press call Obama on his campaign rhetoric of not taking money from special interests. Factcheck clearly refuted his claim. Why didn’t the press point out how much money Obama has paid the superdelegates to date. Why did the press wait a year into the campaign to finally air the Rev. Wright controversy? I had read about Obama’s shady relationships over a year ago.
We’ve now got reporters coming out saying it is true they were so mesmerized by Obama early on they admit they didn’t report on him objectively. Tucker Carlson just last week said, he was certainly no Hillary supporter, but the press has clearly been in Obama’s corner. Lou Dobbs said he’s never seen such media bias against any one candidate as has been the case against Hillary. Pretty pitiful, to say the least.

Posted by: Karen | May 18, 2008, 1:17 pm 1:17 pm

yeah whatever,
Let us review the facts:
Both Obama’s parents were Ph.D.’s. His grandparents were pivotal in his child rearing and they were far from poor. His grandmother was a bank VP in Hawaii. Even when his mother lived in Washington state, prior to Hawaii, they lived in a rather high income area. Obama attended the most exclusive private prep school in Hawaii. His stepfather was an industrialist in Indonesia. Not sure if they were rich, but they certainly were upper middle class.
When Obama was transferring from Occidental to Columbia, he took the summer off and somehow could pay air fare from CA to Indonesia, then on to Pakistan, then India, then to CA and then on to NYC. Note, not only did he not have to bus tables like most students to pay tuition, he somehow had money for a world tour. While he talks about his mother on food stamps, he forgets to tell you that it was briefly, if at all, while she was a Ph.D. candidate and his grandparents were supporting him.
Hillary Clinton’s mother never attended college. She was a high school graduate who was essentially homeless at the age of 14. Hillary’s father did attend college, but his father was a mill worker. Hillary was a National Merit Scholar so that helped with her college tuition. While her father did own a store in IL, the family qualifed for government backed student loans which means they were income eligible. Also, Hillary spent one summer in Alaska as a student. How did she finance this? She took a job cleaning fish!!
So, what were you saying about how poor Obama was??

1 out of 7 people say that they ‘think’ that Obama is a Muslim. They got that from successful lies by the right wing on the internet. They have email lists and they send out their lies.
I see emails which jam together the OSAMA and OBAMA intentionally. They put OSAMA in parentheses next to Michelle Obama’s name on emails I get from the hate-mongers.
I hear Republican candidates, intentionally mistake OSAMA and OBAMA.
I have little hope for America.

It really is offensive for a man that has agressively practised Black Liberation Theology which includes a healthy dose of anti-white teaching and Black separatism to want to try and pretend he is mainstream in Oregon….I find the current trend in both Huckabee and Obama to try and use their religion to get votes as offensive as when Bush did it.
I also think it is hypocrisy for Obama to try and advertise that his church and religion is “mainstream” Many of Trinity’s teachings and certainly the Rev Wright’s writings are based in large part on Farrakan’s perverted branch of Black Islam….an anti-Isreal “hate” religion by and large made up by Farrakan. Then there are the the victimization validations of the “Cone” elements.
People in this primary are confused not because of the early emails….there were just as many sent our about Hillary Clinton.
People should really be confused by Obama’s hesitancy early on to denounce Wright (in large part Trinity teaches anti-White victimization).
Obama sat there for 20 years denies he heard anything and now seems shocked when Wright takes his sermons out of the pulpit and takes them public.
Separating himself from what he has listened to in church for 20 years and read in the church bulletin has been surprisingly easy with the cooperation of the media….I doubt any other candidate could have gotten away with this hoax…..For instance Hagee’s endorse mcCain has been used as some sort of equivalence by Obama. While Hamas and the Black Panthers and Farrakans endorsement of Obama have been quickly hidden from the public.

The fact is both Clinton and Obama are “elitests”. The difference between the two is that Obama is not quite as phoney as Clinton nor does he come off as a big panderer like Clinton does. Just give him some time though and he will make it to her league. Vote for Obama.

Dear Fellow Americans,
Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America
is facing and will face very critical and substantial
“Challenges” in coming, months, years, and decades to come.
It is very essential that we pick out our next
President keeping in mind the following criteria.
1. A candidate who has a clear and candid ” Vision and Mission” for our Nation.
2. A candidate with ” Strong Character and Stable Integrity” in-spite of adversity during primary election process.
3. A candidate with sound and sustained “Presidential Temperament” and
” Judgment”.
4. A candidate with little “Washington exposure”
and “real connectedness with people and future generation”.
5. A candidate who “Inspires us up” rather than
“Tears us Down”.
6. A candidate not based on sexism, racism, regionalism, and ageism.
In my professional, political and personal opinion, the only candidate who meets the all above characteristics and has shown constant and consistent coolness, calmness, and connectedness { PRESIDENTIAL TEMPERAMENT } is Senator Barrack Obama.
As an independent registered voter since 1980. I voted
for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First Bush,
and second Bush in 2000 and In the process last
interest in Washington politics and I
stopped voting. Getting disinterested and disgusted in our political process and stopping voting that was a bad decision in any circumstance, particularly under present circumstances.
This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and
let “Washington” stay the same.We can not afford our
Greatgreat Nation to become less than what we are, what we were and what we can be?
We need to send clear, careful and candid message to the world and some time 24 hour partisan hateful media to set the agenda for our future.
These partisan media outlets are trying to deprive, dupe, and derail us and our Nation getting it right this time.
These partisan media and pundits are trying their best to deny us better future and continue focus our weaknesses and generate bitter future for us and our Greatgrand Nation. { Our Greatgrand Nations people
are persistently and constantly subjected to this
Psychological Terrorism” without our knowledge. The common and regular people do not have time to see thru
and sort thru this psychological terrorism perpetuated by these partisan media outlets.
We the Americans should not and would not to allow
these partisan media outlets psychologically terrorized, traumatized and silence us this time and any time in future.
I am sure that we will get it right this
time and elect Senator Obama our next President.
Let us remember that our Greatgrand is constituted of
family, friends,fellowships, faith, funds,foundation,
fun, and future with fairness and freedom and without
fear or favor.
We can not afford to lose any of above. Let us stand
up, be counted, save, build our Greatgrand Nation for
centuries to come and regain our world economic, moral, and power status back.
God Bless our Great grand Nation and its diverse
people.
Our Greatgrand nation needs present and future
stability, security, safety,sustained progress and
restoration of our due status in this perilous Global
World at the all levels.

Mim, you wrote: “…then vote Republican, vote for high gas prices…”
I have stated this before and I will repeat it once again! The Democrats offer nothing that will ease the pain of the high price of gas. Instead their plans will only drive up the cost of gas even higher. They want to raise the federal tax on gasoline $1-$3. They have advocated, for years, that we Americans should be paying the same price as Europeans ($6-$8 per gallon). But they also want to implement a windfall tax on the oil companies’ profits. The oil companies use their profits for exploration, new drilling and distribution of oil, in addition to passing on some of the profits to their share holders. So with less exploration, less drilling and less ability to distribute the oil, supply can only decrease — which will drive up the price of gasoline. So a vote for the Democrats is a vote for even higher gasoline prices.

“Why the different reaction”? Seriously? Why does the guy who has had people throughout the primary spreading rumors that he’s secretly a Muslim get a different reaction to him telling people “um, actually…. no I’m not” than the guy who everyone already knows is Christian using it as a campaign talking point?
It’s pretty disingenuous of you to even ask that question Jake. You know perfectly well why. Obama has a legitimate reason for it, he is completely entitled to correct misinformation that others are systematically spreading about him.

If Obama went to Church for 20 years, why was it that he only recently accepted Jesus? It sounds more like pandering to me. When will the people open their eyes and see that he just says what he thinks people want to hear. He wont answer direct questions with out changing the subject, even his press secretary said we can’t hold him to what he says in the campaign. My vote is going to Hillary.

From one of Jake’s earlier posts:

Posted by: countallthevotes | May 18, 2008, 1:29 pm 1:29 pm

The passion expressed in alot of these posts is really quite impressive…and reflective of an engaged democracy at work. Good job – keep it up.
However, when people say they will not vote for Obama because he is black, then they are racists. Really, it’s OK. You have the right to free speech and the right to be bigoted. Just say it…just say “I’m not voting for him BECAUSE he’s black.”
But, for goddness sake, have a little courage to take that stand and stop beating around the bush.
When people say they will not vote for Obama because he is a Muslim, then they are simply uninformed. And that is understandable because some of his opponents are unfairly using that as a wedge issue – he is a Christian.
If you are unsure of that, then inform yourself..and I don’t mean from Fox “News”.
You ALL ought to stick to discussing the issues, instead of pillaging the man’s character through false accusation and innuendo.
If you think that America should stay in Iraq and continue fighting the war, regardless of how long it takes, then McCain is your man.
Do not vote for Obama, because he believes that President Bush allowed us to get sucked into a civil conflict, and Obama intends to get us out of Iraq, while best protecting American interests and lives. Obama will bring our troops home from Iraq, and redeploy where we need them now – especially in Afganistan.
If you are happy with our economic circumstances, then vote for McCain, because he will continue Predident Bush’s domestic policies.
Bear in mind, the astronomical oil prices (and your $4.00 gas prices) are a direct result of instability in the Middle East, and that instability was CAUSED by President Bush’s war in Iraq.
Seriously, look at the candidates based on their positions on the issues. The differences are clear. Then argue that you support McCain or Obama based on those issues.
That is real politics at work…let’s leave the mudslinging and histionics on the Jerry Springer show.

Elitism is a “mindset”, not a financial position.
Whether you like it or not, Hillary is much more comfortable talking to voters…Obama is more comfortable at huge rallies giving his rhetorical preacher-like stump speech. Being comfortable talking with voters one on one is a much more genuine attribute than having to revel in the self-aggrandizement of the big stage.
In a NH stop, Obama sat and listened to a woman lament on her economic situation, she began to cry about the loss of a job, and possibly losing her home…Obama never changed expressions…he just continued on telling her how he acquired his home in Illinois.
As Obama tried to relate to “common” folk, he mentioned the high price of “arugula”. He didn’t even realize how out of touch he sounded. It went right over his head.
Obama..in a closed door fundraiser with elite liberal San Francisco types, mentions why he has trouble reaching the blue collar workers. He thinks they’re bitter and cling to religion, guns, antipathy toward others, due to frustrations about their lives. He doesn’t realize the impact of this statement, but mostly, he didn’t expect it to be revealed.

Posted by: Mc Love | May 18, 2008, 1:35 pm 1:35 pm

The name calling and hate mongering is not coming from Obama supporters here, it is coming from those opposed to him.
The fact is, Republican fear mongerers, helped along by Hillary’s waffling, have spread rumors for months that Obama is a Muslim. Many Americans are extremely prejudiced against and suspicious of, Muslims. This flyer is a response to voters in W Va stating they did not vote for him because they believed he is a Muslim. Obama has a right to correct the misinformation being put out about him. Get over it, people! His faith was lied about, he’s trying to correct the lie. It is ridiculous that so many of us are such ignorant, bigoted, small-minded people, but there you have it – too, too many of us are, as evidenced by many of the comments posted in this thread.
RE Rev Wright – as far as I’m concerned, it was no more terrible for him to say what he did than it was for Pat Robertson or whichever Evangelical flak it was to say that the terrorist attacks on September 11 were punishment for America’s tolerance of homosexuality. They were equivilant statements. So, if you’re not going to get all self-righteous about one, you can’t do so about the other. If you ARE going to get all self-righteous, you have to apply the same standard to both – get it? I didn’t think so…ignorance must be bliss.

I fought in Viet Nam and I support Obama.
As far as I can see, He’s done nothing ‘wrong’ I can see except be born with a dark skin complexion.
Since when is being born Black, since when is that a sin in the eyes of GOD?
Maybe it’s a sin in the eyes of people who are racist haters, but not in GOD’s eyes.
Since when is that un-American?
That’s what we fought and died for, to protect our nation and the Constitution that states that ALL people are seen as equal under the eyes of God, freed from the prejudices of the old world.
The man, Obama, has spoken from his heart, admitted his faults and unlike Hillary, never lied 100 times that he was shot at by snipers in Bosnia.
Obama never lied unlike Hillary for years that he himself created a peace in N. Ireland.
Obama never falsely claimed like Hillary for 6 months that a girl died for lack of health care refuted it and threatened to sue her.
… all lies…
He laid his taxes out without protest when asked… unlike Hillary.
Obama didn’t go on TV and cry, sob… that the men were out to get here.
Obama didn’t inflate his resume and claim that he worked in the WH for 8 years, a purely honorary position, that does nothing more than give teas and meet with wives of foreign leaders.
That’s why 10 retired General officers of the US Military, support Obama as C-I-C. How many support Clinton?
None. Not even one.
Speaks volumes.
I have spoken.

NinaK,
I think that 17% to which you are referring were actually asked if race were a factor in their decision. Now that is a very broad question and people could easily answer, “Yes,” if they were thinking about Rev. Wright and all that debacle. Does that mean they would never vote for a black person? I think not. I recall being perplexed by the actual question posed to the voters by the pollsters. It really was aimed at presenting them as racist, no matter what.

Truth as I see it.

The third truth is only for those who would heal this world. The first two truths are for all those who would destroy hope.

I really find this offensive that Obama is enforcing his religion to get votes. I mean, for McCain, it’s alright because the republicans have been doing it for a while, but Obama? You know, this blatant bit of “Christian pride” is going to really turn off atheists and people of other faiths. Obama fails to address the other part of the American population; instead, he goes chasing after Christians and uses his support for another Civil rights movement (like we need another one) to go after blacks and latinos. This guy is completely ignoring Asians and other people. This is why I’m either going for Hillary or McCain. At least McCain knows exactly what he’s going to do, and his evangelicalism is pretty much tradition to him.

We humans are irrational, emotional, illogical creatures. Hard to pry us off our preconceived notions even if they are not based on truth. Like: Obama’s so called elitism. He was raised by a single mom. She didn’t have her way paid in school. Her parents, Obama’s grandparents, weren’t wealthy. Grandpa was a salesman and had many financial ups and downs. His grandmother worked her way up to VP after many, many years. We should celebrate that! Nothing was handed to him. He went to those great schools on scholarship which he earned through his hard work and intelligence. Isn’t that the American way? Or are we just lying, narrow minded bullies? I would hope not. Americans, we are so far better than all this. We can be magnificent if only we dare to overcome our fears and divisions. Ours is a beautiful country filled with diverse, wonderful people and we have a lot of issues to tackle. We need clarity about our problems and stop fighting one another.

I don’t have a religion, and I don’t trust god-preaching hypocrites.
The definition of elitism is below. By definition, every candidate, and most of the people in this country fall into an elitist category. If we don’t have money, we consider ourselves better because we are part of a group or because we have a degree. If we have money, well, hell, we can buy what makes us look good.
Obama was trying to get in the “Elitist” community in KY, which consists of a bunch of churchgoers that (oh my god, she’s not just about to say) cling to their guns and their bibles.
To the chagrin of New York bloggers, no, Obama must talk about things more important to the constituency in KY. Yes, it is politics. Do you think he should go to KY and tell them that they would be better if they were NY?

Published: March 14, 2008
With a Pentecostal minister at the helm, the committee planning the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August is determined to demonstrate that the party has overcome its squeamishness about religion, and that its big tent will accommodate religious believers.
For the first time, the Democratic convention will be kicked off by an interfaith prayer service, on Aug. 24 (although still to be decided is who will lead the prayers and where they will be held). And in another first, there will be a caucus during the convention explicitly for ”people of faith,” to meet at the same time as the caucuses for African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics and other groups. (Delegates who are, for example, black AND religious will have to make a choice.)

As for that flag pin, everybody is so stired up about, If you noticed at the begining of the nomination talks, Obama was wearing the flag pin, then afterward he wasn’t, when asked on a talk show what happen, he said I lost it, and didn’t think it nessary to get another to wear, if only he would have know the stupidty, of X amt. of american voters to make such an issue over it, I’m sure he would have gotten another, but since George Bush wears one, maybe he thought better of it! It’s not what we wear that makes up the heart, and what we do, if so, bush has been just a wonderfull pres.! HA! vote OBAMA 08

No flier will change the fact that Mr. Barack Obama is a liar, flip-flopper, and political spin-artist con-man.
I don’t like the words pastor wright has for America either. For a man with so much education and experience, he should be using positive points to move people, not hate and racism.
Which brings me to my point that Mr. Barack Obama has followed, idolized, endorsed, and whole-heartedly believed in a “spiritual leader”(pastor Wright) who has been riddled with a manifestation of such deep-seated HATE, and complete disdain for his fellow Americans, or at least the non-black ones, that is similar in its intensity to that of the nastiest of KKK leaders.
And so it has become obvious that Pastor Wright has FAR more Integrity, Courage, Honesty, and Heart than Mr. Barack Obama. Like him or not, Pastor Wright has risen a WORLD above Mr. Barack Obama because Pastor Wright is still committed to his message. Make no mistake, Pastor Wright is the SAME person as 20 years ago when Mr. Barack Obama became and stayed immersed in his message of HATE. Make no mistake, IT IS MR. BARACK OBAMA THAT HAS FLIP-FLOPPED AND BRANDED HIMSELF AS A LIAR FOR HANDILY “DISOWNING” PASTOR WRIGHT FOR HIS OWN POLITICAL GAIN!!
Whether you’re talking about something as simple(yet important) as a patriotic flag pin, or something as DAMNING as 20 years of commitment to HATE and RACISM, one thing is STARKLY OBVIOUS: MR. BARACK OBAMA’S RELIGION IS BEING A MASTER LIAR AND DECEIVER OF AMERICA FOR HIS OWN POLITICAL GAIN!! And he’s good at it!! Don’t be fooled by this deceiver of America!!
MR. BARACK OBAMA is a HYPOCRITE!!

Also, it seems that people who are opposed to Obama only remember the falsehoods spread about him and react very angrily about it. They have never really read and reflected on anything he has said. Example: now he’s wearing a flag pin but he doesn’t deserve to because he didn’t serve in Vietnam and hates our country. People, come on – how obviously wrong is that? He clearly loves this country, else why would he choose to return here in his teenage years? This is his home just as it is ours. Why are we so afraid of other countries anyway – when John Kerry travelled and spoke another language; when his wife is multilingual…this is an asset. America is part of a large world with many languages and cultures and we should elect a president who can speak more than English and is a well rounded human being. He never refused to wear the flag pin. He just didn’t want to wear it mindlessly like so many people who did so like a 2nd grader saying, “This is the club I belong to – you don’t wear the pin, you don’t belong.” This land is our land. W/not we wear a pin doesn’t change that. No one ever challenged Clinton or McCain about that and they often are seen without one. Get a grip people!

Why do people in Obama’s campaign talk about how he is related to Cheney, but not about how he is related to a Kenyan Muslim family? Especially when his last name is Obama, not Cheney?

I see Obama has also gone to Florida and Michigan recently. Many of the voters there are pretty irritated at him, and I guess he thinks he can simply go over and smooth things out, and they’ll vote for him in November.
Thing is: The rules of the DNC only state the delegates can’t be seated..it says nothing about voters being invisible as well. The voters clearly spoke.
In MI..the names on the ballot were: Clinton, Dodd, Kucinich, Uncommitted. Obama sent out mailers urging voters to vote “uncommitted”..and many did.
In FL..Obama runs a national ad for two weeks, and still loses big.
Obama complains the party leaders broke the rules, so we can’t possibly revisit this issue, eventhough, Obama himself broke the rules as well. In most elections, these rules would be symbolic at best, but in this highly historic race, to not revisit this issue, gives credence to an illegitimate nominee.
Obama also complained he didn’t have a chance to campaign, but when given the chance to a revote, Obama balked. He would have been able to campaign as vigorously as he wanted, and outspend Hillary his usual 3 to 1, but he still refused. Obama looks mighty afraid.
I don’t see FL and MI voters forgiving him too quickly for disenfranchising them. Hillary is actually ahead in the popular vote, whether anybody counts them or not.

You really believe people are that stupid? Obama can’t be all things to all people unless he really has a God complex. Well, maybe he does believe he is the second coming.

Everyone who says the flag pin is no big deal needs to search google with the term “Obama says he won’t wear the pin”.
What you’ll find is that Obama says “Obama says he doesn’t like how the pin has come to represent patriotism in America.”
“the pin” means a pin with our US Flag on it!! So Obama is saying in his own words that he does not like the way our Flag is representing patriotism.
The real issue is not whether Obama(or any other politician) chooses to wear a pin with our US Flag on it or not, the real issue is that Obama specifically said “I won’t wear that, uh, pin”.
And guess what? NOW HE’S WEARING THE PIN!!
Just like he said wouldn’t throw the Pastor under the bus like his white grandma, AND THEN HE DID!!! AND FOR WHAT? HIS OWN POLITICAL GAIN!!!
Simple behaviors equate to massive decisions, WHAT WILL OBAMA DO NEXT IN ORDER TO GET HIMSELF ELECTED?
Obama is a Liar and a Flip-Flopper, how much more clear can it get??

It is silly to think that if there is a God that any person can be doing his work. It is logical to think that God can and will do his own work and that to say that you are doing God’s work is lessening God and encouraging the worst kind of projection of man’s limitations upon the Almighty.

Posted by: Vernell Dillon | May 18, 2008, 2:16 pm 2:16 pm

Exit polling showed that a shocking number of voters in West Virginia would not vote for Obama because he is black. If that is you…then you are a racist.
Really, it’s OK. You have the right to free speech and the right to be bigoted. Just say it…just say “I’m not voting for him BECAUSE he’s black and I’m narrow minded.”
But, for goodness sake, reach down and find your…well, find your courage – to take that stand and stop beating around the bush.
And when you say you will not vote for Obama because you “think” he is a Muslim, then you are simply uninformed. He is a Christian!
And for the record, it is actually legal and responsible to be a Muslim in America since we have that little thing called freedom of religion.
I just think it is fascinating that Senator Obama and his message resonate very in states that do not have a high black population – such as Oregon and Iowa. It’s just a guess, but I’m thinking that folks in these states are a lot more tolerant and informed. That is a good thing.
If you reside in a community that is racist, intolerant, and uninformed, then that’s what you ought to be worried about.
At all events, the rest of us do not intend to let you drag us down the rat holes of Racism, bigotry and intolerance.

Here’s the problem: conservative portions of this country have fought change, and it has worked to this point. The problem being that these parts of the nation are now behind educationally (as a whole. You could be a very smart person born and raised in Kentucky) and socially compared to the rest of the country and the world. Combine that with long lived bigoted sentiments traditional to these areas (again, I apologies for lumping people together, but as a whole these areas struggle with things foreign to them) and you have areas wholly uncomfortable with educated people willing to live in a global society.
They put themselves behind the curve, and now they vote for less qualified candidates that often share antiquated mindsets. It is very telling to me that those who are highly educated are far more likely to be Democrats. It doesn’t mean there aren’t smart people on the other side of the aisle, but I think the Republican Party is to the point where its policies are so nonsensical it has to exploit people who don’t know better.
We need to better educate these areas, and force modern ideas into stagnating regions. Their beliefs are fine ones to have, and tradition is certainly important. The lack of empathy by big city Democrats when looking at rural regions (I grew up on a rural farm, I know how it feels) is unnerving and sometimes borderline insulting, but ultimately the Democratic party far better serves the interests of these areas. The Republican party wants to keep voters dumb. It wants them to misunderstand other religions and cultures, and will play on unjustified fear to gain power. But tradition need not walk hand in hand with hatred and bigotry, and belief need not abandon reason. Lets not look down on these areas, but look at them like family members fallen on hard times. Whether they want it or not, it is our duty as a nation of brothers to help them overcome financial and educational hardships so they can join us in the new millennia.

Barack Obama is a Christian. It is shameful at how ignorant and just plain stupid some people in our country can be. The presidential election in 2004 proved that.
Wake up, people, and get educated before you vote. Vote on real issues, and not on phony baloney.
The states that have the highest percentage of college graduates are the East Coast states, and the West Coast states as well as Minnesota and Wisconsin. The state of Washington has the highest percentage of college graduates in the nation. All of these states almost always vote Democrat in presidential elections.
I don’t want 100 more years of war, 100 more years of record setting costs of gas and oil, and 100 more years of an economic recession.
Will McCain have a military draft if he is elected President? He can’t have a 100 year war in Iraq without a military draft.

Hillary has run a disgusting, hateful and negative campaign. No one has questioned her beliefs nor her pastor. I believe Hillary is about Hillary and about being president at all costs. No one has gone to Hillary’s church and checked out her pastor and what he gas said over the last 20 years. Maybe it’s because he isn’t saying much of anything, hence the reason for Hillary’s behavior.

I would vote for C. Powell, Rice or another black person but ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR THIS HYPOCRITE OBAMA. I have gone so far as to read his books to find out if I might vote for him, but all I found out is he is the racit; he DOES NOT like white people, even tho his white grandparents raised him and he had a white mother.
By the way: you are calling white W.V. voters racist because they voted for Clinton. How about the blacks voting 95% plus for Obama because he’s black, and the blacks had a “black” candidate in Clinton???? That’s not racist??????
You bet it is.

“Oh old hillary can throw back shots like a drunk, have no apparent grounding in faith, can be as negative as can be and still be portrayed as Saint and Obama who has actively worked in a church, demonstrates the sacrifice of forgoing wallstreet to work on the chicago street helping the least of these.”
He gave up Wall Street in exchange for the Presidency of the United States which is being handed over to him in a silver platter.
Clinton has proven to have more passion, faith and spirituality in her fingernail than Mr. Obama. But someone in this blog is right; this is not about religion it is about the issues which he handles badly, also. Not as bad as McCain, though and that is why he will be president. Poor America you have been blindsided by the media and the power behind the Democratic Party BIG TIME. The sad thing is that we are ALL affected. The entire world is affected.

Simple.
Although I don’t agree with his message at all, Pastor Wright is MUCH MORE of a Christian and Honest Person than Barack Obama will ever be.
Obama can evaporate 20 years of his own faith in just two days without batting an eye. And for what? Yep, Political gain, that’s it.
What’s next? Will Obama will evaporate patriotism in America by getting us another flag and letting other countries rule us?
It’s that simple things that matter so much…. We don’t have anything else to guage Obama’s character by.. Really, the press can’t ask him “tough” questions, and he won’t debate, and even if he does, HE WILL LIE TO GET ELECTED!!

I think Obama should send KY voters a copy of his church newsletter. They can get to know his new pastor and other info about Black Liberation Theology.
A newsletter might provide some insight as to why he chose this particular church-(known to be one of the most radical in Chicago)to find himself and his faith-for 20 years.
Obama is so arrogant- he thinks a picture of a cross will convince those poor “bitter” KY voters that he is OK.

“Remember, many people vote based on an emotional connection to a candidate or if they can relate to that person.”
Senator Obama’s entire campaign has been about emotional connection. The KY flyer is one of many examples of this. He is a master at using distraction,
playing the victim, and evoking emotional support to mask his shortcomings.
Look at the Rev. Wright controversy. How did he combat that? By delivering an eloquent speech on racism. People swallowed it hook, line and sinker. But the issue was not racism. The issues were his spiritual beliefs–Black Liberation Theology which includes both religious and political agendas, and his giving conflicting responses when confronted with the Rev. Wright controversy.
Following his poor performance in the PA debate he used theatrical gestures, brushing his shoulders off to illustrate he felt he was attacked but able to brush it off. People couldn’t get enough of it, completely willing to overlook the fact that he was unable/unwilling to give concise, meaningful answers to so many of the questions that addressed his judgment and character during the debate.
I am outraged by the KY flyer and disappointed to see so many Americans voting with their hearts rather than their heads.

First, this pamphlet about religion has been around since February. I have volunteered for the campaign and seen it in New York and Pennsylvania – so it’s not new. And, it’s obviously needed to combat the misinformation that’s out there about Obama’s faith. (15% think he’s muslim?? – even after Rev. Wright???)
Second, Rabin Deka (who posted at May 18, 2008 1:57:18 PM) must never have put his or her money where his mouth is, because if you did, you would know that you MUST be a US citizen to donate to the presidential election.
STOP with the attempts to smear him! It’s either ignorance or maliciousness, but either way it’s wrong.
We are all US citizens who are donating to presidential campaigns – even (or perhaps especially) OBAMA! Go Barack! POTUS 44

The proof that the media is right wing is found in how one must search to find information about what a hypocritical crook McCain is. He’s been influence peddling since he became a Senator; just look up Keating five. And if you want to see more recent evidence look up McCain land swap, where he gave away develop able federal land on a swap for unusable scrub. Why the different reaction?
Huckabee’s ad had a subliminal (or not so subliminal) disguised cross which was actually an intense reflection off of the wooden supports on a bookcase behind him. In contrast, Obama’s cross is actually a cross. No effort here to conceal anything. This mailer is designed to highlight the fact that Obama is a Christian. Why? Well, it turns out there are some big time scumbags out there that would exploit anything to retain power and the money that comes with it. They’ve been claiming Obama is a Muslim. IN ONE CASE the person that orchestrated one of these email campaigns PUBLICLY STATED that “I know he’s not a Muslim, but I am a very comfortable liar when it comes to keeping a black man from becoming president. I’ll do anything, say anything, and lie until the cows come home to make sure that only white men are in the White House.”
So, I’d say this mailer is a good thing.

countallthevotes,
I appreciate your information. That was a concise history. However, it was a bit full of judgement. Sorry, but it came through that way. I’ll continue to do research, and I encourage you to do the same.
As I read, Obama’s mother moved to Indonesia as she’d married an Indonesian whose student visa had been revoked from the U of Hawaii (and was conscripted into the Indonesian army). Obama went on to say that he attended the Indonesian schools as they couldn’t afford the ‘international school’ (page 187-188, The Audacity of Hope). It looks like that was only a couple of years– from age 6-8??
I honestly haven’t finished reading the book.
As far as HRC, her parents were pretty wealthy. Her grandparents? Maybe not. McCain is the son of an Admiral, who was the son of an Admiral. So, yeah, pretty wealthy. It’s a fact of life (sadly) that the presidential candidates are all from wealth. We’d bash them as idiots from Idaho State (like me) if that weren’t true.
Still, I’ll read McCain’s book, too, if there is one. I’ll read HRC’s, if she somehow manages to topple popular opinion, which I doubt, and claim the nomination. That, too, is predicated that I can find a book that she’s written.
I’ve liked Obama’s ideas on racism, opportunity, and economics. So, McCain will have to do a pretty good job….
On the con side, though, Obama is pretty wordy. I come away with an understanding why people can say ‘all talk, no content.’ It takes a pretty close read to distill the perspective and the policy that would likely come from him as a president. It IS there, though.
I appreciate your response. I wish you the best.

I speak of God and service to God’s kingdom in much the same way Senator Obama does, but I am not an evangelical. We forget that evangelicals are a small portion of the total church. Sometimes I think the media automatically equates “Christian” with “Evangelical.” If you do, you leave out about 90% of the rest of us. I happen to be a United Methodist pastor, a liberal, and a committed Christian. There are many of us around the world who wed faith and action but don’t carry a conservative theology.

The press needs to take a real look into their chosen candidate. He is not perfect – Palmer, Rezzo, Wright, Land Deal, just to name a few of his crimes.
They need to finally realize that Obama just doesn’t have the knowledge and skills to to POTUS.
Then again, that’s why Kennedy, Pelosi, and Kerry want him……puppet.

Unfortunately, it would appear that a significant percentage of the good people of West Virginia and Kentucky have said that they will not vote for Obama BECAUSE he is black.
Now, I am just a 52 year old white man from Beavercreek Oregon, but that kind of behavior looks racist and intolerant to me.
I just think that voters ought to focus on the issues (upon which there are stark differences between Senator McCain and Senator Obama), and leave the race baiting and name-calling to the Jerry Springer show.

Obama’s background is most similiar to typical Americans-he took out loans to attend law school and still was in debt until he signed his book deal. McCain, Hillary and almost everyone who has been president or VP comes from earning millions and millions of dollars. They accept campaign money from corporations and lobbysists, yet tell us they want to make changes to benefits the average person. If you have never been a part of the low or middle class, you do no understand the daily struggles. Obama is not corrupt and owes no corporations or lobbysists favors because his donations are from regualr americans like you and me. Regardless of political parties and political views-politics are run by corporations and special interest groups. That is why we are such huge debt (in addition to the Iraq war cost), have declining status based on public education compared to otehr developed countries, have one of the highest prison rates, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer and middle class are not advancing and oil prices continue to rise. The oil companies made record profits last year and will make close, if nto more than that next year, because they have realized how much we depend on oil and can pretty much charge wha they want. Bush is not asking the oil companies to reduce prices. He is from Texas for gosh sake. Cheny-also from an ebergy backgroun made 21 million dollars last year. Can you figure that our??? Obama is America’s best chance to make this country better than it has been for years. What is Hillary or McCain going to do to help you and your family with your daily struggles-Obama was nto raised with a silver spoon and because he has not been in Washington too long, he is not corrupt like most other politicians. Keep you facts straight and stop falling into the traps of the sensationalized media portraying stories that have nothing to do with the real issues. For those who are “religious” I am sure that you have attended a service where a preacher has said something that you have not liked, and if you are from W. Virginia, the Southern state-you probably have heard worst comments that Wright-you just would never admit it-not would it end up on the news. If you really think about it, most people who don’t vote for Obama should be rich republicans or people who cannot elect a candidate because he is half black-which is extremely ignorant-but yes, racisim is still alive in America, even today unfortunately. If not, you are looking at race (even thought Obama is half white) or religion (where there is seperation of church and state-gay marriage is decided by the states, not the federal government and abortion rights will never be overturned completely) to make your decision, which is absolutely ridiculous.

“Mary Nugget – wake up!!!
Obama is not ashamed of his white heritage.
HOWEVER, IF YOU WERE A PERSON OF MIXED HERITAGE, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT IN AMERICA, YOU ARE CONSIDERED BLACK.
I applaud him for finding the balance he now has, because trust me, it is difficult to attain especially whenever you encounter racism now and then because of your appearance.”

Who can trust an individual who sat for 20 years listening to Jeremiah Wright’s words of hate for America and whites?
Yes, Barack Hussein Obama sat in Wright’s congregation holding hands with the overly jubilated members as they celebrated the sad and terrible incident of 9/11. Barack sat for 20 years listening and believing the demented theories of how whites created AIDS to eliminate blacks and many other sick stories of persecution.
Who can trust Barack?

VelShan; I couldn’t agree more.
Obama has certainly brought a lot of social issues to the surface.
I hope that most people will also take time to listen to what he has to say instead of screaming Islam! Black! Elite!
Difference inspires irrational fear.

jake,
I am a sen. clinton supporter, I think sen. clinton will make a better president than obama.
I think the notion of obama claiming to be a new kind of politician-bringing hope and change-
obama is the same kind of politican that he claims need to be out of washington.
his political resume’ is to short, his time on the national stage is just beginning-and already he has shown he will do and say anything to get the vote.
I wonder were the church is that he was in the pulpit on this picture?
Has he changed is membership from tucc?
I wonder what his relationship is with trinity now?
he said he was invited to a local church and became a christian, what religion was he before he became a christian?
and if he was not a member of a church or religious that is ok, but this pandering that he is now doing i fear is just a sign of things to come from him.
Now, I and a whole lot of other people know sen. clinton did not have people who were able to run a good campaign for her. as lanny davis said “she is better than her campaign”
but we know sen. clinton is the more capable-one of obama’ political advisors said so-but obama will be able to surrond himself with smart people.
well we have seen that before, with disasterous results.
instead of have the smart one-sen. clinton in office setting things right.
we will have obama who already he,his surrogates and supporters are finding more and more times to explain and make excuses for him.
and talk about uniting people, obama has with the help of the msm and the dnc bigwigs have managed to divide this dem. party where it will never be put back together again. time for a third mainstream political party.
i hope obama will not want sen. clinton
to campaign for him. His wife michelle was asked would she campaign for sen. clinton if clinton were the nominee
michelle replied “I’ll have to think about that”
so why should sen. clinton campaign for him?
the only thing new about the obama politics are they are the new faces of old politics

Jess,
Your quote: “Yeah whatever – you are totally lacking in an ability to analyse.”
That’s not nice. Please, try to stay with facts, rather than personal attacks if you respond to me. If you’d proven that statement with any facts of your own, I’d appreciate your response. As it is, though, you can “pack sand.”

If the Republicans wanted a nominee this year who personified the brain death of their party, they couldn’t have picked a better one than John McCain. Ideas have never been the Arizona senator’s strong suit, even when the conservative tide was surging. McCain’s calling card has always been his biography, as those who run his campaign and craft his ads know well.
The one issue that McCain has always cared about is the honor of the American military, as he defines it. Leaving Iraq would dishonor those soldiers who fought and died there. Torturing our enemies would dishonor those soldiers as well. McCain comes from a military family and has always had to live up to the code of his father and grandfather, for whom military service was both a way of life and the highest form of patriotism. On other matters, his ideas amount to so much boilerplate, to the received truths of the conservative mainstream that he is recycling in this year’s campaign, no matter their relevance to American’s current state.
Consider his economic platform. McCain proposes making George W. Bush’s massive tax cuts for the rich permanent and cutting corporate tax rates by 10 percent — proposals which, if enacted, would increase our budget deficit by a cool $2 trillion to $3 trillion over the next decade. To fix the faltering economy, he proposes a summer suspension of the gas tax — a $50 to $100 one-time seasonal tax reduction in the face of rising costs and stagnant incomes. The only economic issue that has engaged McCain’s interest is congressional earmarks, which total, by his measure, roughly $18 billion in a $14 trillion economy (less than 1 percent). His crusade against earmarks then really isn’t an economic issue at all; it is merely a way the politically astute McCain distinguishes himself from his ostensibly more political colleagues.
McCain has never shown much passion for or interest in economic or social causes. His default position is conventionally conservative on issue after issue, and there’s no reason to believe a McCain presidency would take another course.

i know the voters of kentucky are smart enough to see how obama is playing them.
for him to have sat in the church he has sat in for 20years and now to put out this flyer-is an insult.
I think the only people in Kentucky who will buy this are the Black people-and they will set out to continue to make excuses for him. no matter what he does.
My black brothers and sisters are showing their “racial pride” for a black man to be president is so desperate now they will accept, make excuses, threaten anything for obama.
makes no difference if everyday he is proving a little more and more he should not be president, he is black and it must be.
mr. obama said he found God in this church and became a christian, and then,
after 20year-but within a few months he has had to denounce the man who helped him to God.,obama has now started wearing a flagpin-after laying out that long explaination of why he didn’t wear one.
I just hope his soul is still intact once he get the white house.
we didn’t know him. what we do know about him raises more questions, and what he has told us-he is changing as the times or situation calls for.
sill leave me asking, who is obama and what exactly does he stand for, and exactly what is he going to do for me and mine, other americans,
and yes-I have got the “hope and change” message, but what is the rest of the story?

Posted by: jgaw | May 18, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

It produces cognitive dissnonance. Obama’s message of change has no focus. Layering on the religious symbols invokes trust where there has yet to be substance. The ultra-liberal-intelligent image conflicts with the on knees in prayer image.
It comes off as pandering for votes. People react to that because that was Bush/Rove’s technique and we are sensitive to it.

Jess,
It must be lonely at your flat. The fact that you can’t vote in our election is not lost on me… and I’m thankful of that. There is no reason that I care about anyone’s grandparents. HRC’s, or Obama’s, or McCain’s. My own are long since gone. While they have some influence in life… these are all grown people with lives for which only they can answer– a grandparent is free of blame or credit. So, there is no “issue” or “argument” for which I am obliged to answer. In short, “pack sand.” I’ll not respond again.

Right on “Vets for Hillary”, way to bring on the references of Good Support for Hillary.
It’s a shame the amount of baloney that some “Obama – the new messiah” supporters will dish to try to fool us all.
Oh and since when has posing a good argument against an opponent been a reason to label someone as using “negative” politics? Like everything else he flip-flops on, Obama is just calling Hillary negative because he lost the last debate with her, and she’s making some good arguments with him.
Hillary has been amongst the best of “politically correct” of any candidate. This is because Hillary understands that we are a diverse nation. Hillary knows that our diversity is part of what makes us such a strong nation.
Don’t be a FOOL!! Don’t vote for Obama!!

Vote Hillary, I love these “I’m so shocked/look it up!” type of posts. So I looked it up and it’s 57 nations, not “states” that organized in 1969.
“The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is an international organization with a permanent delegation to the United Nations. It groups 57 nations, most of which are Islamic, from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, Caucasus, Balkan, Southeast Asia, South Asia and South America. The official languages of the organization are Arabic, English and French.” Wikipedia
Maybe the sky isn’t falling, afterall. But I’m sure there are people who will go no farther than reading your scare tactic attempt. As they say, perception beats the facts.

I’m so tired of the right wing talking points that i can’t understand how anyone can think they are reasonable. You really should stop listening to Rush and Hannity both of them leave critical information out of their arguements against Democrats. If you beleive that right now is the time for more de-regulation of Corporations, the continued power of Lobbiest and those they represent, staying in Iraq until God knows when and tax cuts that mainly benifit the rich. Vote for McCain. The points I just mentioned are why you should support him and the facts supporting why this is better is how you should frame your arguement against Obama
This Guilt by association argument works against anyone who has a long list of people who they rely on for public office. Here is how the arguement works (this is all fact by the way) McCain’s mother hates Mormons. She claimed this during a live interview on MSN. Because McCain didn’t denounce her and he has been listening to her anti-Mormon retoric for so long how can we trust him to stand up for religous freedom in this country. Also according to his preacher he has never come up to the alter and publicly accepted Crist at his church, so there are doubts he is even a Christian (in the true sense). How can he represent America if he doesn’t even beleive in God and has been pretending to be a man of faith when he obviously is not. He did call the Christian Group led by Jerry Falwel “agents of intolerance” What is even more frightening about McCain is that 2 of his staff members have lobbied on behalf of the dictatorship government of Myanmar. These sorts of associations are troubling. What is a nominee for president doing employing people who represent a dictatorship. What were they doing on Myanmar’s behalf and what does this say about McCain’s friends values? How is he affected by these people who he surrounds himself with who are so sympathetic to dictators that they lobby their anti-civil (or any) rights style governments values to America? Obviously, there is a section of McCain’s inner circle who support taking away of the people’s civil liberties. How will this play out if the American people elect him president (it is scarey)
All of you Hannity idoits take note— anyone can be smeared through guilt by association. The amazing thing is how you people buy into it.

Bruce Becker, the argument that if we waterboard the enemy then they will waterboard us is a bogus argument. Our enemy already has a history of decapitating Americans. I for one would rather be waterboarded then have my head sliced off with a machete or sword. And here is a startling fact, do you know who has committed the most acts of waterboarding? US Government THREE — Anti-war protesters THOUSANDS (dozens at nearly every anti-war rally).

Bertha, spare me the drama and learn how to read more carefully. I didn’t say blacks were racist for voting for Obama in part due to his race. Apparently that is your own insecurity. I’m black, and I don’t find anything wrong with having racial pride. I do have a problem with people only pointing out when whites vote for Clinton, and I have a problem with the notion that white support for Clinton is inherently racist, but black support for Obama is just a coincidence.

Posted by: Josh | May 18, 2008, 8:45 pm 8:45 pm

jgaw and tony and anyone interested in truth and accuracy,
I assume some of you have read Obama’s book in which he recounts his time in high finance in NYC, post-Columbia. Well, it seems some of his co-workers read his book and sharply disagree with his account. Take a look and see what I mean. Obama writes fiction, pure and simple and embellishes his resume. Other than writing these two books, I do not see real achievements that would qualify him for POTUS.
Barack Obama Embellishes His Resume
Don’t get me wrong – I’m a big fan of Barack Obama, the Illinois freshman senator and hot young Democratic Party star. But after reading his autobiography, I have to say that Barack engages in some serious exaggeration when he describes a job that he held in the mid-1980s.I know because I sat down the hall from him, in the same department, and worked closely with his boss. I can’t say I was particularly close to Barack – he was reserved and distant towards all of his co-workers – but I was probably as close to him as anyone. I certainly know what he did there, and it bears only a loose resemblance to what he wrote in his book.
Here’s Barack’s account:
Eventually a consulting house to multinational corporations agreed to hire me as a research assistant. Like a spy behind enemy lines, I arrived every day at my mid-Manhattan office and sat at my computer terminal, checking the Reuters machine that blinked bright emerald messages from across the globe. As far as I could tell I was the only black man in the company, a source of shame for me but a source of considerable pride for the company’s secretarial pool.
First, it wasn’t a consulting house; it was a small company that published newsletters on international business. Like most newsletter publishers, it was a bit of a sweatshop. I’m sure we all wished that we were high-priced consultants to multinational corporations. But we also enjoyed coming in at ten, wearing jeans to work, flirting with our co-workers, partying when we stayed late, and bonding over the low salaries and heavy workload.
Barack worked on one of the company’s reference publications. Each month customers got a new set of pages on business conditions in a particular country, punched to fit into a three-ring binder. Barack’s job was to get copy from the country correspondents and edit it so that it fit into a standard outline. There was probably some research involved as well, since correspondents usually don’t send exactly what you ask for, and you can’t always decipher their copy. But essentially the job was copyediting.
It’s also not true that Barack was the only black man in the company. He was the only black professional man. Fred was an African-American who worked in the mailroom with his son. My boss and I used to join them on Friday afternoons to drink beer behind the stacks of office supplies. That’s not the kind of thing that Barack would do. Like I said, he was somewhat aloof.
…as the months passed, I felt the idea of becoming an organizer slipping away from me. The company promoted me to the position of financial writer. I had my own office, my own secretary; money in the bank. Sometimes, coming out of an interview with Japanese financiers or German bond traders, I would catch my reflection in the elevator doors—see myself in a suit and tie, a briefcase in my hand—and for a split second I would imagine myself as a captain of industry, barking out orders, closing the deal, before I remembered who it was that I had told myself I wanted to be and felt pangs of guilt for my lack of resolve.
If Barack was promoted, his new job responsibilities were more of the same – rewriting other people’s copy. As far as I know, he always had a small office, and the idea that he had a secretary is laughable. Only the company president had a secretary. Barack never left the office, never wore a tie, and had neither reason nor opportunity to interview Japanese financiers or German bond traders.
Then one day, as I sat down at my computer to write an article on interest-rate swaps, something unexpected happened. Auma called. I had never met this half sister; we had written only intermittently. …[several pages on his suffering half-sister] …a few months after Auma called, I turned in my resignation at the consulting firm and began looking in earnest for an organizing job.
What Barack means here is that he got copy from a correspondent who didn’t understand interest rate swaps, and he was trying to make sense out of it.
All of Barack’s embellishment serves a larger narrative purpose: to retell the story of the Christ’s temptation. The young, idealistic, would-be community organizer gets a nice suit, joins a consulting house, starts hanging out with investment bankers, and barely escapes moving into the big mansion with the white folks. Luckily, an angel calls, awakens his conscience, and helps him choose instead to fight for the people.
Like I said, I’m a fan. His famous keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention moved me to tears. The Democrats – not to mention America – need a mixed-race spokesperson who can connect to both urban blacks and rural whites, who has the credibility to challenge the status quo on issues ranging from misogynistic rap to unfair school funding.
And yet I’m disappointed. Barack’s story may be true, but many of the facts are not. His larger narrative purpose requires him to embellish his role. I don’t buy it. Just as I can’t be inspired by Steve Jobs now that I know how dishonest he is, I can’t listen uncritically to Barack Obama now that I know he’s willing to bend the facts to his purpose.
Once, when I applied for a marketing job at a big accounting firm, my then-supervisor called HR to say that I had exaggerated something on my resume. I didn’t agree, but I also didn’t get the job. But when Barack Obama invents facts in a book ranked No. 8 on the NY Times nonfiction list, it not only fails to be noticed but it helps elevate him into the national political pantheon.
For the comments see this link. Many other co-workers weigh in:

Countallthevotes, I am confused. You wrote: “…as the months passed, I felt the idea of becoming an organizer slipping away from me. The company promoted me to the position of financial writer. I had my own office, my own secretary;…” But in the very next paragraph you wrote: “If Barack was promoted, his new job responsibilities were more of the same – rewriting other people’s copy. As far as I know, he always had a small office, and the idea that he had a secretary is laughable. Only the company president had a secretary.”
You say that you had your own secretary…but only the company president had a secretary?

“MY FELLOW AMERICANS……Barack Obama has finally crossed the line!!!!!!!!! ”
As you can see,not everyone is for B O!
My vote will be for Hillary Clinton
because she has the strength and the brain and the chutzpa to bring our country out of these terrible economic times into a future of universal health care, job growth, and solutions on the devastating mortgage problems confronting too many of our home owners.
GIVE EM HELL, HILLARY!!!

The candidate aligned with Christ
has already won the nomination.
The losing Antichrist female
candidate is engaged in all
manner of deceit and trickery.
Her shenanigans and skullduggery
will lead her to naught.

Very hard to believe that Huckabee and
his people didn’t know that bookshelf in the background looked like a cross.
Obama is a Christiand and has attended churches around the country. The ministers like the fact that he usually stays the entire service instead of just for 5 minutes before running to the next church. Because the false rumors and emails persist that he is a muslim, the flier is wise and appropiate.
As for faith. It took a lot of faith to believe that a skinny guy named Barack Obama could become President of the United States.

I think there is a different reaction on both fronts from the media. The media went overboard with 6 to 8 weeks of Rev. Wright. He was scary to a lot of the media and to alot of America because most haven’t spent time in black churches and have never heard most of black preachers critique America on.
I think the media’s decision to go overboard mixed with its lack of wall to wall coverage over the RW evangelical movement’s pulpit message put them in a ‘fair and balanced quandry.’
I think that tv coverage has shown the flier with the cross but the media knows it has a ‘fair and balanced’ deficit on religion.
What can the media do when at least 8% to 20% think Obama is a Muslim AND goes to Rev. Wright’s church?

On SNL, McCain said he’s very,
very, very old.
He’s also very, very, very
infirm to run for POTUS – a
job that would require him
to know whether he is coming
or going.
