Rachael Ray’s Scarf Arouses Conservative Ire

Dunkin Donuts has canceled a TV ad featuring cutie-pie cook Rachael Ray because in the ad, draped around her neck, is a black and white silk scarf with paisleys that some conservatives objected to because they thought it too closely resembled a keffiyah.

The Boston Globe has more details.

Says Dunkin Donuts: ‘‘In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial.’’

Weird days.

LOL Dunkin you are so rancid!
WOW a sign of things to come for OBAMA.
Those crafty repubs have stated an insidious campaign.
So he put on the flag pin and now he has to be very careful with those paisley ties! Gee the RNC is so devious!

Another example how propaganda has overtaken reason.

We have more to fear in this country of nut jobs than Rachel Ray’s scarf! The people doing this sort of ridiculous blogging such as GTA and the right wingers that caused the ad to be pulled are far more dangerous to our country and our civil liberties than any terrorist.

Even if it were Middle Eastern, which it is not, then what the heck difference does it make? Are we supposed to hate and be at war with everything Middle Eastern? Should we ban all the falafel huts and renounce pita bread? The complainers are the same morons who eat “freedom fries”.
I don’t eat at Dunkin Donuts, but if they would put the ad back up I would get donuts for a month there just to spite these idiots.

Obama is allowed to LIE on Memorial Day about how his uncle saved all the Jews in a concentration camp – he get patted on the back for making Memorial Day all about himself, and Rachel Ray puts on a black and white scarf and is called a terrorist.
I think this country is really in terrible shape.
Wait until your golden prince who walks on water and is give an academy award (did you notice his smirky sneer when someone asked about his “flub” on the concentration camp uncle) for lying to veterans of this country’s military.
You are voting for a Nazi regime in the USA – you, Donna Brazile, Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean. These are the people who are destroying our country.
A liar who is belittling what the Nazis did to the Jews during the 1930s and 1940s.
Good pickings USA.

Many celebs have been caught wearing this terrorist-chic garb. Thank goodness the conservative blogs and talk radio are on top of this to call them on it.
So what if it’s trendy? What if swastikas became trendy? White hoods?
It’s like liberals with their love of Che who killed thousands upon thousands of people. That’s why I laugh when they bash Bush and praise Che.

I personally feel the world would be a better place if we left on the Dunkin’ commercial and pulled Fox News (and I use that word loosely).
It is the idiots like the one that kept this crap going that need to be pulled. They spew hatred all day and then bloggers go home and spew it some more over the Internet.
FDR said it best with “we have nothing to fear, but fear itself”.
That is what they are using. FEAR. Of what? A scarf? of someone wearing a scarf? Was the scarf Rachel Ray’s secret “there ya go” symbol to jihadists? Oh, please…
How moronic to they expect people to be? Wait a minute……it seems to be working so I guess their expectations are based on results.
We don’t have to worry about terrorists destroying this country. We seem to be doing an ok job of that without any outside help.

I would give Obama the benefit of the doubt about this latest lie about his uncle, but then I remember the Selma lie, the Kennedy brought his dad here lie, and “I never knew what my pastor said” lie.
Obama, you’re not that good of a liar. And before Fox & talk radio you might have gotten away with it.
Obama has been hanging around the Chicago corrupt anti America political machine too long where no one questions His Highness. It’s a different world out there, Obama, outside of Chicago, and fortunately you’re not going to be part of it as CIC.

Annoyed,
That would be funny if not for liberals jumping all over what they perceived was a cross in one of Huckabee’s ads…..when it was a bookcase. You libs were up in arms for this (what you called) subliminal message. Of course what is hilarious is that Obama did an ad in Kentucky with a cross behind him and no problemo for you guys!!
So please don’t make us laugh and say the conservatives use fear.
You libs invented fear.

If you travel worldwide, White Americans are on the World’s Most Wanted list in terms of human rights violations, oppression of others, combined with this boxed sense of superiority. That explains their fear of everyone and everything. I would be afraid too if I’d done so much wrong in the world, everybody has a hit out on me.

Are you not aware that the exit polls had a woman say she did not vote for Obama b/c she believes he is a Muslim. Connect the dots dear one…the scarf is a symbol to be out there as a slam to Obama to keep the flame of hate burning. He is your candidate do you not care? I abhor the fear and hate tactic don’t you? Do you not understand the depth of RNC hatemongering?

Posted by: HP Boston | May 28, 2008, 1:03 pm 1:03 pm

Jo: None of this is anti-American. Most of us are presenting constructive critism towards our country’s policies. There should be no doubt that our foreign policy has gone down a bad road. Michael Scheuer, former head of the CIA’s Bin Laden unit, has said that only Ron Paul amongst the republican candidates understands how our policy puts us in danger. Why don’t the republicans wisen up.

How silly can we get? The keffiyah (there are different spellings) is also known as a peace scarf or antiwar scarf, and is not religious. There is a photo online of McCain’s daughter, Meghan, wearing one. Everything that is Arab is not necessarily terroristic, folks. This is America, a multicultural land!!!

No more Dunkin Donut coffee for you!
“The word “coffee” entered English in 1598 via Italian caffè. This word was created via Turkish kahve, which in turn came into being via Arabic qahwa, a truncation of qahhwat al-bun or wine of the bean. Traditional Islam prohibits the use of alcohol as a beverage, and coffee provided a suitable alternative to wine.
There are several legendary accounts of the origin of the drink itself. One account involves the Yemenite Sufi mystic Shaikh ash-Shadhili. When traveling in Ethiopia, the legend goes, he observed goats of unusual vitality, and, upon trying the berries that the goats had been eating, experienced the same vitality. A similar myth attributes the discovery of coffee to an Ethiopian goatherder named Kaldi and the Legend of Dancing Goats.
One possible origin of both the beverage and the name is the Kingdom of Kaffa in Ethiopia, where the coffee plant originated (its name there is bunn or bunna).

In liberal Utopia, it is a crime to drive an SUV. We blame ourselves if attacked by Muslim terrorists. Infact, we will blame ourselves for any problem that happens, even hurricanes.
Utopia will throw away the rules of a Representative Republic and replace the rule of the land with radical leftwing judges and mob rule, unless over ridden by the liberal communist government.

Why is that newera???
Is it because the Federal Government is supposed to be tasked with one thing and one thing only, national security.
Is it because I believe we are responsible for our own actions and our own protection? Is it I believe that the government has no business in education and healthcare?
Is it because I believe in personal responsibility?
Is it that I happen to believe that manmade global warming is a farse?
Is it that I feel that today we are over taxed?
Is it that if you spill hot coffee on you, you do not get to sue for millions.
Is it that if a disaster hits, get off of your rears and help yourselves instead of waiting for “my free handout”.

Posted by: GTA | May 28, 2008, 2:07 pm 2:07 pm

Bonvivant, and I believe that the problem with Katrina is the people didn’t evacuate when they were told to. The government told them to and they didn’t. How about that for a response?
That’s not the government’s fault. And when they didn’t — chaos insued. Why wouldn’t it?
And by the way, you just made an argument for not depending on the government because it’s inept. So why do democrats want to make it bigger and more powerful? Ouch.

It was CNN who admitted finally that they use to cover up all of Saddam’s atrocities to get Baghdad access.
It was CBS who was caught in a lying tale of Bush natl guard kinkos, etc. fame.
I could go on all day if I wanted to, but you get the picture.
Kate, you make us laugh, please continue. LOL.

By the way, I’m glad to know that Kate has polled “the rest of the world”…
And just a reminder….Kerry lost with his “global test” essay question. You might want to cut down on that “the rest of the world thinks….” The rest of the world is in dire trouble thanks to their socialist/liberal policies. That’s why France just elected a Bush lover, and Germany went with a conservative.
And Ron Paul supporter, if you’re worried about liberties than you better not vote Obama because he just said that we’re not going to be able to drive our SUVS, eat as much as we want or set our thermostats on 72 because (get this)….the REST OF THE WORLD will not be “okay” with that.
LOLOLOL. yes, i love to laugh. You libs crack me up.

Jo,
I love (truly) the “small government crowd.” I choose not to live in a cave so I have no problem living under the yoke of the social contract. “Small government” sounds good as a slogan.
Here is a small list of “Big government” at work.
Do you drive on federal, state, county, town roads?
Do you have Polio?
Is your bank account insured by the FDIC?
Are your tires inspected as safe?
Is your food inspected to make sure it is safe?
Do you take any national pride in our space program (have you ever used Corning or any other product that is a direct result of NASA)?
Have you ever gone to a national park?
Is your job safer because of OSHA?
Have you paid less money for any item that cost less because of anti-monopoly laws?
Do you or anybody you know collect social security, medicare?
Are you happy that the coast guard tries to stop drug traffic?
Have you ever used an FDA approved drug?
Ever flown in a plane (TSA workers, Air traffic controllers controlled by fed)
Do I need to go on, I will if you really want me to, but my hands are tired.

If not for Fox News (Sean Hannity) we wouldn’t know about Rev. Wright.
Thank God for Fox News. And I completely understand why you libbies hate it. It would have so much more convenient to keep Rev Wright in the closet, n’est-ce pas?!
Lol.

If not for Fox News we wouldn’t know that the huge crowd in Oregon was mostly there for a free concert by a very popular Oregon based band “The Decemberists”…..oh sure, some came for Obama, but MOST came for the concert.
The mainstream media loves to “leave out” this sort of stuff when it comes to Obama. Thank you, Fox News!!

Jo,
Ive been to the rest of the world Ive watched Rupert Murdoch explain the difference between his sky news channel and FNC one he said was a news channel the other he said was an oppinion network that serves it subscribers with the opinion/news they want from there point of view… When ask about why they use the fair and ballanced slogan… He replied Diet Coke has nothing to do with diets! LOL
You get served crap and think its news when the guy who owns it as told the british parliment that its nothing but crap with a fake slogan!

Posted by: Kate | May 28, 2008, 2:34 pm 2:34 pm

Kate, let me sum it up for you.
Before Fox News, you guys got away with everything. And now you don’t. It’s as simple as that. And don’t even get me started on how much the New York Times gets caught with totally bogus stories.
It’s the other news outlets who are getting caught time and time again either making stuff up or getting it all wrong.
Nice try, but again, you lose.

Posted by: Jo | May 28, 2008, 2:38 pm 2:38 pm

Anybody that gets their news from only conservative (or liberal for that matter) news source is really just a pawn. It is sad but I guess their are always people that like to be directed what to think and do. Heck if it worked for the followers of Jim Jones it cant be all bad (YIKES, my second Kool-aid post, I think that is a sign of the End Times.)

Posted by: Kate | May 28, 2008, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

Bonvivant, yes and that’s why the liberals are always the clueless ones.
Conservatives HAVE to get their news from both sources because it’s mostly liberal news outlets that are out there, you can’t escape it. You actually have to “seek out” conservative news.
It’s liberals who stick with only their liberal news sources because they can. And THAT is why they rarely know what is really going on.

Posted by: Jo | May 28, 2008, 2:40 pm 2:40 pm

PG, Sean Hannity started doing investigations of Rev. Wright back in March of 2007. NYT probably got their idea from him.
Again, if you don’t watch Fox News, you don’t know what’s going on, because the mainstream liberal media will cover up for it’s party (the dems) as much as they possibly can.

Posted by: Jo | May 28, 2008, 2:46 pm 2:46 pm

Jo… I hope you don’t have kids because they will be fighting this battle in Iraq for another 10-15 years. And by the way McCain explained why he voted against the revised GI Bill I’ll bet there will be a draft.

Posted by: newera | May 28, 2008, 2:49 pm 2:49 pm

Before Fox News & talk radio, Obama would have gotten by with his huge gaffes. Now since Fox reports them, the mainstream media feel FORCED to print this stuff, because even though they are incredibly biased, they don’t want to lose ALL their credibility…
We love ya Fox! Keep ‘em honest!

Posted by: Jo | May 28, 2008, 2:50 pm 2:50 pm

Jo, I just pointed you to specific articles the “liberal media” ran about Rev. Wright last year around the same time Hannity was doing his investigation. First you say that they got the idea from Hannity, then you say they are doing a cover-up. I don’t think those can be true at the same time, unless you mean Hannity’s idea was a cover-up.

Posted by: PG | May 28, 2008, 2:51 pm 2:51 pm

Actually PG it goes beyond that.
He’s told that tale before with always a different version of it.
It’s amazing what you find out from Fox News who uncovers old speeches!
:)

Posted by: Jo | May 28, 2008, 2:51 pm 2:51 pm

All media outlets have gotten caught on getting news wrong. Remember when Fox News was reporting that Obama had attended a jihadist indoctrination school in Indonesia? I guess that fed too well into people like Jo’s prejudices to be counted as an error, even though Fox News admitted it had gotten it wrong. “If it fits with my bias, it must be true!”

Posted by: PG | May 28, 2008, 2:54 pm 2:54 pm

Many women who are avowed Hillary Clinton supporters are declaring they won’t vote for Barack Obama in the fall. I get the anger and the disappointment. But to quote SNL’s Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers: Really? You’d rather vote for John McCain, a man who has a 25-year history of voting against a woman’s right to choose? A man who over the last eight years that NARAL has released a pro-choice scorecard has received a 0 percent rating? A man whose campaign website says he believes Roe v. Wade “must be overturned”? A man who has vowed that, as president, he will be “a loyal and unswerving friend of the right to life movement”? Really?

McCain has been running ads in Iowa for a couple of weeks now. His ads here mention cleaning up the environment, healthcare reform, and working to defeat special interests. He is basically campaigning like a Democrat here in Iowa. Too funny.

Posted by: Hip Hop Anonymous | May 28, 2008, 3:06 pm 3:06 pm

Hip Hop,
What’s funny is that in 2006 and for all those special elections that have gone on in the last 3 months, democrats have had to build up how conservative they were to get elected. And it worked!
That’s what is “too funny.”

If you think people are going to vote based on McCain’s abortion stance you need to think again.
Abortion is waaaay down the list of what people think about when they vote for someone.
That’s why this doesn’t hurt McCain. Besides the country is very split on this issue anyway. And they’re overwhelmingly against partial birth abortion which Obama supports.
So you lose on that one too.

Posted by: Jo | May 28, 2008, 3:13 pm 3:13 pm

Wow. I am having trouble digesting how desperate the conservative movement has become. At this point I don’t think many people who used to call themselves conservatives can continue saying they are still conservatives without breaking into tears. The Republican party has been hijacked by a handful of paranoid, neo-conservative, power hungry people and in the process the party has been destroyed. These people are now so desperate that they rally against a SCARF in a TV commercial. It’s just sad, and reflects the sad state of the conservative movement circa 2008.

Posted by: Think | May 28, 2008, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm

Our image is being mocked? Oh yes, that’s why they flock here daily and why everyone wants to copy us.
And the rest of the world doesn’t need to tell the United States what we can drive, what we can eat and what to set our thermostats on.
Again, it is YOU who are clueless.

If you’re worried about spending, then you couldn’t possibly be voting for Obama. He’ll spend like there is no tomorrow.
One of the things I admire about McCain is his anti pork barrel spending views, and he has the record to prove it.
Vote for McCain.

Posted by: Jo | May 28, 2008, 3:25 pm 3:25 pm

Kate, no it won’t be a factor.
And you better HOPE it won’t be a factor, because Obama believes that if an abortion fails and the baby lives, that you can let the baby lay there, and die, with no medical intervention. Yes, he supports that! If that isn’t infanticide, I don’t know what is!
Even NARAL doesn’t believe in this barbaric notion. Yes, even NARAL!
So you better hope abortion isn’t an issue, or your guy will lose even more votes.

Ron Paul,
But you can’t measure how much “worse” it has made things, because you never will know how much “worse” it could have been if we did not do anything. And all I know is that recent study showed terrorism down 40%. And no attacks on US soil since 9/11. That’s what I measure. Thankfully so will most Americans come November when Obama loses big.
You see? That’s why I think we did the right thing.

Posted by: Jo | May 28, 2008, 3:41 pm 3:41 pm

Ben,
70% think the war was a mistake and yet in many polls McCain beats Obama.
That shows the 70% isn’t very strong, or they don’t blame McCain for it.
So this doesn’t bode well for Obama.

Posted by: Jo | May 28, 2008, 3:42 pm 3:42 pm

Ben,
And if you’re going to go by polls, the overwhelming majority DO NOT want an immediate pull out like Obama does.
They know that will mean disaster.
So again, Obama loses on that issue too.

I can’t believe Dunkin Donuts pulled the ad (although Rachel Ray IS rather annoying)and caved in to this nonsense. The average American doesn’t give a crap about what she is wearing in that add and surely aren’t stupid enough to read anymore into it than what it is – a SCARF. Jeesh.

Malkin knows Ray is a democrat (came up in Cindy McCain show) and Malkin is just stirriing up the pot her way.
Because it didn’t have the cajones to stick up for her, Ray will probably sue DD for damage to her own reputation, and I’ll never be a DD customer again. (I drink about four cups a day…can’t you tell?)

I think scarves may now have an opening to make a comeback on the fall fashion runways this year! Hey, I think I’ll just stick one in my glovebox for when I want a box of Joe or some munchkins for the kids’ class. Now, that’d be funny. A shop full of kerchief clad soccer moms. What is this country coming to???

I suggest we all don our keffiyahs on some set day, go to DD’s drivethrus, and then agonize slowly over our orders and fumble for change.
I’ve got a red one, pretty ugly, from 1978. They were all the rage in West Germany, along with Bundeswehr jackets, painters pants, and clogs.

The supposed Muslim ‘head scarf’ is not even on her head. It is around her neck. How is that supporting terrorism?

Posted by: Melanie | May 29, 2008, 11:44 am 11:44 am

The supposed Muslim ‘head scarf’ is also a PAISLEY design. Paisley is a traditional Indian motif, representing the tree of life, and it has been incorporated into many Christian denominations as a symbol of Christ.
I’m afraid Ms. Malkin is, in addition to many other shortcomings, fashion-challenged. She may have had time to research the design of the scarf if she hadn’t immediately jumped to the conclusion that Dunkin’ Donuts is secretly an Islamic terrorist front organization.
This kind of idiocy has sadly become emblematic of the Republican party, the party I’ve chosen to be identified with all my life. It’s getting harder and harder to call myself a Republican when intellectual lightweights like Malkin, Hannity, and Rush also choose to share that name.
I’m thinking the Libertarian Party is looking pretty good right about now. And hey… former Republican Bob Barr–now running for president as a Libertarian –apparently agrees with me!

did i read correctly??? a liberal says that liberals invented the Constitution, the Bill of Rights? they even invented Dr. King? and the City of Selma?
A bit of advice…don’t try to debate issues by making ridiculous claims. I would bet real dollars that most of you liberals are actually live and practice conservative values.
A true liberal will admit what liberals believe in. A true liberal believes in Socialism. Although Socialism has failed every place it has been practiced, the “liberals” still believe in it.
A free society does have difficulty in existing, but its worth the effort to remain FREE.
The biggest mistake that liberals/socialsts make is not understanding that people in a free society will die for their rights. Liberals won’t sacrifice any thing except other people to further their cause.

Dunkin donut is WAY out of line.Only the most rascist ignoramus would complain about a harmless scarf. Each day we move back to the Mccarthy era with people seeing “commies” and “terrorists” everywhere. All you complainers need to realise that not so long ago most of your ancestors were discriminated against. Some for skin color and some for religious convictions. Also Liberals are not socialists by nature, they are open minded and welcome change.Conservatives
on the other hand have a much narrower view and are less willing to change based on new info.Look at the mess in the White House. Call me a fiscal conservative and a social liberal anyday!

Posted by: disgusted | May 29, 2008, 7:59 pm 7:59 pm

Posted by: veronica | May 29, 2008, 10:26 pm 10:26 pm

While I agree this is ridiculous because her scarf looks simply like a scarf, I’d like to play the devil’s advocate. We must remember symbols have always represented an important part of all cultures throughout time. Had Rachel Ray worn a swastika arm band or white hood the world would have been appalled. I am amazed that certain forms of dress have become en vogue. As an expatriate from the U.S. it disturbs me that we can be so insensitive especially after 911 and I can only attribute this to ignorance. For many of us living elsewhere in the world, we see up close what these symbols represent. These organizations and governments actively support the suppression of women, the banning of freedom of religion and speech, and the tacit acceptance of violence against innocent human beings all in the name of a cause or belief. Have we become so P.C. that we refuse to tell the truth or are we somehow hoping that our own human/democratic values are also shared by all? Read, listen and observe. Actions always speak louder than words. Remember, symbols are powerful messages!
