About 100 Protest McCain in California

ABC News’ Bret Hovell and James Gerber Report: The largest assemblage of protestors to gather at a McCain event this election cycle greeted the Arizona Republican this morning in Santa Barbara, California.

The group of about 100, largely assembled to protest McCain’s environmental policies, awaited him outside the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum, where McCain is set to deliver remarks and receive a briefing on the environment.

Watch video of the protest HERE.

McCain has received flack in recent days for reversing his position on U.S. off-shore oil drilling. The presumptive Republican nominee has long opposed it but switched positions this month, citing the need for relief from high gas-prices for American families.

Santa Barbara residents are particularly sensitive to the issue of off-shore drilling. An oil spill off the city’s coastline in 1969 sparked intense protests and landmark legislation.

Chants of "no new drilling" could be heard, as well as a guy on a bullhorn talking about how "shortsighted" McCain’s plan to drill for more oil is.

One sign read: "McCain: Some Nerve. Coming here to try to sell Earth-desecrating policies to us!!!"

There were also some protesters holding signs about McCain’s anti-abortion position, and one sign read: "Abstinence vows break more easily than condoms."

Once he got past the throng, McCain spoke about the environment. In his speech he talked, among other things, about longer term solutions for getting the country off of fossil fuels. He acknowledged, as he frequently does, that he believes climate change is real and needs to be addressed.

"We now know that fossil fuel emissions, by retaining heat within the atmosphere, threaten disastrous changes in climate," McCain said. "No challenge of energy is to be taken lightly, and least of all the need to avoid the consequences of global warming."

McCain has spent the last several weeks talking about energy and the environment, promising that if elected, he would propose a $300 million prize for the development a car battery that weans America off oil.

Thankfully there are some in California who are protesting McCain, as goofy as California is, had they not protested I would have had concerns about continuing to support McCain. Knowing many in California are upset with McCain validates that he is likely the most stable, levelheaded and best candidate for America. Thank you California for illustrating who clear-thinking people should be voting for.

johr…if you think the off-shore drilling will fix the gas crisis then you are loonier that McCain…

Oil drilling goes on all around us. Nuclear waste is all around us. We are killing the atmosphere with all our gas emissions and pollution. We need a comprehensive plan to become free of foreign oil, or we will suffer the dire consequences. Our entire lives are connected to the use of energy. We need a long-term plan. Right now, we need a short-term plan. People need help now. McCain understands the entire picture. Currently, we count on safety measures in producing nuclear enery and drilling for oil. We can drill carefully in the right places for more oil to become independent of foreign sources. At the same time, we need a wise national policy to address the issues of energy while protecting the environment. We must do this. John McCain fully understands what we need to do, and how to do it.

My goodness this guy can’t seem to make up his mind from one day to the next…what next? Is there a requirement to have a psychiatric eval to be President. I withdraw that question…there couldn’t be…otherwise Bush wouldn’t have been elected :-)

John McCain will side with big corporations and big oil. The lobbiests own McCain. His only concern is helping the weathy just like Bush. Every day McCain is becoming more and more like Bush.

i specifically like the part where they said they didnt torture him… hahaha if thats the case, whats mccain been talking about all these years… was it just teh crash that injured him and not torture, but since he wanted to be a hero he made it all up!
Tran Trong Duyet a McCain enthusiast: “If I was American, I would vote for him.”
The former head of the Hoa Lo prison salutes McCain for his efforts to restore relations between the U.S. and Vietnam, but is still very on-message in a Communist sort of way.
“But I can confirm to you that we never tortured him,” Duyet told the Beeb. “We never tortured any prisoners.”

georgia: Obama’s plan is to stop the Enron Loopholes. McCain is against it. Now, the specialist are saying if these loopholes would be closed then we will see gas go down 30% to 50% OVERNIGHT. Now you want to tell me who is look at the short and long term of this gas issue.

The GOP spins the results in Iraq to boost appeal for their brand of politics when in reality Iraq is still a long ways away from a self sustained government and military. The GOA report contradicts the Pentagon report released yesterday praising the surge and the main media outlets (ABC, CBS, NBC and FIXED News) are playing dumb. Here is a piece of the GOA report. “The administration lacks an updated and comprehensive Iraq strategy to move beyond the “surge” of combat troops President Bush launched in January 2007 as an 18-month effort to curtail violence and build Iraqi democracy, government investigators said yesterday. While agreeing with the administration that violence has decreased sharply, a report released yesterday by the Government Accountability Office concluded that many other goals Bush outlined a year and a half ago in the “New Way Forward” strategy remain unmet.”

nothing like a communist endorsement lol

Posted by: bhrandon | June 24, 2008, 1:43 pm 1:43 pm

peoples prez
and check this out on iraq as they say its sobering news
The Government Accountability Office delivered on Monday what was, in many ways, a sobering report on the current situation in Iraq. Agreeing that levels of violence in the war have decreased sharply, the authors nevertheless concluded that many of the Bush administration’s “surge” priorities had so far been unmet.
According to the GAO, the percentage of Iraqi units “capable of performing operations without U.S. assistance” remains roughly 10 percent. Thus, while the number of forces has risen by more than 150,000, the actual assistance that American troops are receiving is far more negligible. Adding salt to the wound, the GAO notes: “Since 2003, the United States has provided more than $20 billion to develop Iraqi security forces.”
The number of trained Iraqi security forces may overstate the number of troops present for duty. According to DOD, the number of trained troops includes personnel who are deceased or absent without leave. For example, DOD reported that approximately 24,500 soldiers were dropped from the Iraqi Army rolls in 2007 because they deserted or were absent without leave. However, these troops are still counted in trained numbers. An April 2008 Special Inspector General for Iraqi Reconstruction report confirmed that a substantial number of Iraqi personnel still on the payroll were not present for duty for various reasons, such as being on leave, absent without leave, injured, or killed.
Although Iraqi security forces have grown in number and many are leading counterinsurgency operations, MNH-1 assessments of their readiness levels show limited improvements… While 65 percent of the Iraqi units were in the lead in counterinsurgency operations as of March 2008, the number of Iraqi army battalions rated at the highest readiness level accounts for less than 10 percent of the total number of Iraqi army battalions.

See these liberals can’t never show any respect to anyone. What is there to protest?? he’s not the president yet so if you don’t like his policies, don’t vote for him. Do you see Republicans protest against obama on his taxing policy?? no, because they are much more of gentlemen then disgraced liberals. The gas price is the most expensive in California, so when talk about gas price, we should just ignore California. and heck, let them pay the high price. Oh wait, but typical liberals don’t want to change anything but will always complaint. You don’t want to drill, you don’t want wind energy in Massaschusett because it blocks the view of the ocean. what the heck do you do want to do then??? Oh, yeah, sit there and complain!!! and being selfish. Just because you don’t like it and it may effect you, you rather let the rest of the nation suffer. And then when there’s something that benefit liberals, you want to force others to go along with it; like univeral healthcare and the taxing system that obama proposed. What a disgrace!!!

oh and thats after 20 billion dollars taht WE have spent… meanwhile oil per barrel is what? and the iraqis have contributed how much of their own money to this war?
oh wait exxon/mobil, shell, BP, and 2 other american oil companies are now getting unlimited contracts from iraq for oil…
LOL
and not only do they have 60 million acres of off shore drilling opened to them to start drilling RIGHT NOW (if its not a pander and a way to really offset these prices then start drilling in the alloted space)
they still hold off, hoping that they can gain access to every coastline… because once the measure is passed everyone…
even if your state says no way… that opens up the oil lobbyists to start working on your governors, and though some may say they are against it now… they wont be in power forever…
im sick of the republicans and the oil companies running stuff and controlling us americans

Not only he flip flop on public finance but the GOP and McCain has less than 1% from PAC and the only outside organization is moveon.org who’s attacking mccain.
I guess the reason for mccain to change his position is for the American people. and obama flip flop with lies along the side for his own self. But anyone can always see who LOVE America.

The news media didn’t report this:
Protesters against Obama:
Elian Gonzalez saga could haunt Obama
Eight years after the furor over the repatriation of Elian Gonzalez to Cuba possibly cost Al Gore the state of Florida in his 537-vote loss to George W. Bush, the international custody saga has returned to haunt another Democratic presidential nominee: Barack Obama.
Having two top advisers who played key roles in the episode — Greg Craig, who represented Gonzalez’s father in Cuba, and Eric Holder, then a Clinton administration deputy attorney general when federal agents stormed the Miami home of Gonzalez’s relatives to remove the then-6-year-old and return him to Cuba — Obama now finds himself on the wrong side of an emotional issue in a battleground state.
The wound reopened again last week after Gonzalez returned to the headlines in South Florida following a report in a Cuban communist youth newspaper that he has joined Cuba’s Young Communist Union.
Miami-based Republican political consultant Ana Navarro said the stature of Holder and Craig in the Obama campaign “shows a tone-deafness to the Cuban American community’s concerns.”
“Elian Gonzalez cost Al Gore Florida and the presidency,” she added.
Indeed, in a display of lingering resentment, Obama’s speech before the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Miami last weekend was picketed by several dozen activists protesting Craig, who serves as a foreign policy adviser to Obama, and Holder, who is a legal adviser and a member of the Illinois senator’s vice presidential search committee.

and that is by stopping the government from letting people like the 22 year olds sell weapons to our enemies!
“Turns out 22-year-old arms dude from Miami was on State Department watch for years before he got that $300 million grant.”

As Republicans see it, the return of the Elian Gonzalez debate to the Spanish-language media will only strengthen traditional GOP loyalties among Cuban Americans at a time when there may be a generational divide between older hard-liners and younger voters who are receptive to a different direction in American policy toward Cuba.
“Every four years, for at least the last 20 years, some media and some pollsters always predict that the Democrats are going to make inroads with Cuban Americans,” said Otto Reich, who is advising John McCain on Latin American affairs and who served in a senior capacity for the administrations of the last three Republican presidents. “Perhaps one day that might be true. But I don’t think this is the case now. Barack Obama is not the kind of candidate for a people who tend to be very traditional in their values and very hawkish in their foreign policy support.”

actually as you have quoted an article jack, it has obviously been reported on
something that isnt reported on is mccains illegal flip flop on campaign finance
which do you think is a bigger story?
and do you think its a good idea for mccain to be a hypocrit and call out obama for his backing away from it while he broke the law
also how is obama outspending mccain,
up until last week obama wasnt on the air against mccain, and has only started runnign national ads, meanwhile mccain has spent the last three weeks on the air
if mccain is so great and gets a free ride in the press… which he does, then why isnt he beating obama
meanwhile, you can count those polls as whatever you want, but i have serious doubts about any poll for this election as the polling comes from past election cycles
and as we have seen obama has reformed the political world and how campaigns are organized, funded, and tactful.
jack, thanks for voting in bush the last two times so that the american people nwo see what a terrible job the republicans have done with americas image

The Democratic National Committee is filing a lawsuit in US District Court in DC to force the Federal Election Commission to investigate McCain’s decision to opt in the public matching funds system for the primaries, secure a loan based on those public funds, and then withdraw from the system after becoming the GOP front-runner. McCain, though, never actually received those public funds before opting out.
“The chairman of the FEC,” the lawsuit states, “has already advised Sen. McCain that he is not free to withdraw unilaterally from his agreement with the FEC and to ignore the legal requirements of the Matching Payments Act, without the FEC’s approval. Yet Sen. McCain cannot obtain such approval, because he already violated a key condition for dispensing with the Agreement by which he entered the matching funds program: he has pledged matching funds as collateral for a loan to his campaign.”

Because of the Democratic Congress, since 2006, gas has risen over $1.50 per gallon, over $78.00 per barrel. And now, Obama, with his idiot self, is wanting to keep the same standards that Pelosi and company endorses. If Obama is elected, get ready, we’ll all have to ride bicycles, of course, he won’t have to because he doesn’t have the intelligence or coordination to steer and peddle at the same time…! Oops, I forgot, I am talking about Obama riding a bicycle, oh well, I guess that goes for his issues facing America as well. Obama, face it….Chicago doesn’t want you and neither does America!!!!

He says what you want to hear, then when he has you, he becomes a camileon and changes….for the worse. He is beginning to be vetted and called on about his flip-flopping and I think its great. The more America learns about Obama, the better……you can fool people some of the time, but you can’t fool people all of the time. You will see what I’m stating is true. Between the flip-flopping and the EnviroNAZI polices, he makes Al Gore look like the safe and reasonable choice. Let alone Obama. He’s the worst of the left and the right put together, with the spineless backbone like a Clinton. He’s pathetic. Wether how he treats his wife, the middle east or the economy, he is UNFIT for office. Only those who aren’t so aware (like in Arizona, and definitely the MEDIA, perhaps) could let him get away with so much, for so long.

This crowd of 100 protesters wouldn’t be so noteworthy for John McCain if it weren’t for the fact that only about 170 people actually went to see him speak today. The guy excites most conservatives about as much as a big bowl of gruel followed by a tax audit.
Already, he’s trailing badly in Michigan and in Southern Florida, and Obama has been capable of going to places like Detroit and attracting crowds of 30,000 people in one night, visibly energizing his supporters in the region.
McCain doesn’t seem capable of energizing anyone, except maxing out the the obligatory Republican corporate donors… but who is he going to turn to once all of them are exhausted?!
What all this implies is that the longer the two candidates compete against each other, the more McCain’s candidacy will tend to fall short at the ground level. His campaign might be able to compete nationally when it comes to advertising, but without actual support on the ground, he’s likely to wind up the next Mitt Romney.
And the thing is, Obama hasn’t even peaked yet.. there’s a long way to go before the Democratic convention and its free airtime, and each step of the way the visible level of support and unity from his party will increase.
Normally, McCain would get a bounce out of the Republican Convention too, but he’s increasingly being seen as running in Bush’s shoes, and there is literally nothing exciting to be expected from their convention this time around.
Really, you have to conclude that although the long primary has hurt him financially, at least temporarily, it has also helped Obama dominate the news and get the public’s attention… and that might be worth a whole lot more in the long run, as it lets him compete and debate almost entirely on his terms.

I’m extremely annoyed by environmentalists. The issue here is that there are millions of families in this country that are struggling to provide for their families because of these astronomical gas prices.
These loony ‘code-pink’-ers need to quit worrying about the pwetty flowers and the furry little wabbits and SHUT UP.

Posted by: matt | June 24, 2008, 4:25 pm 4:25 pm

Has critical thinking disappeared in this country? Why do none of you ever question why you do things or why you’re thinking what you are? Why do you blindly follow what your candidate of choice says? Why do you deify those who agree with you, and demonize those who don’t? When did everything become black and white rather than shades of gray? When did people stop LISTENING to all sides of the story?
I’m a registered independent from Missouri, currently living in California. I’m not some “left-wing nutjob liberal” and I’m not some “war-mongering christian conservative right-winger”. I don’t watch FOX, I don’t watch ABC (why I’m even here and posting this is beyond me, as this is probably a waste of time), and I don’t read the NY Times. I take polls with a tenth of a grain of salt. I don’t care about Obama’s pastor or Hillary’s sniper fire, just as I don’t care about McCain’s comments about his wife. I don’t care what pundits have to say. I don’t vote for the candidate I’d most like to have a beer with, and I don’t vote for the candidate who I think is the best speaker. These things don’t make candidates. My opinions and tendencies don’t change based on the small things. I look at things objectively and rate how important they are based on what they truly mean in the grand scheme of things.
I have a candidate I’m voting for (which I’ll not name here, because it’s not important), but I have no allegiance to him. I’m not going to berate other people because they aren’t voting for him, because I’m not after ego-boosting. I’m after the pursuit of knowledge, and after understanding any flaws I may have in my current beliefs. The only way to do that is to talk to people on the other side. Why would I want to talk to people I agree with? Just as there are two sides to every coin, there are two sides to every story, every issue, every belief. Ignoring one side of the issue leads to an incomplete view of the subject, and leads to a self-righteous belief in your own pseudo-intelligence.
Are fully objective people with critical thinking capabilities a dying breed in this country? I see this type of meaningless bickering on every single news post, every single message board, EVERYWHERE. When are we going to grow up?

“I’m extremely annoyed by environmentalists. The issue here is that there are millions of families in this country that are struggling to provide for their families because of these astronomical gas prices….”
Yes, understandable. But the thing is, environmentalists have been telling us for years to raise the CAFE standards to make cars more fuel efficient, and to stop relying on so much oil.
The simple fact is, thinking you’re going to reduce your oil dependency by drilling more, is like thinking you’re doing to reduce your drug dependency by snorting more.
It doesn’t work, plain and simple… so why give the oil companies sweet deals for exploiting more public lands, when they already own the rights to drill in HUGE regions they have yet to exploit yet?!
Simple fact is, if you give the oil and coal companies unlimited power to make US energy power, they’ll sell oil and coal, while playing lip service to rolling out real, competitive alternatives. They own the rights to the oil and coal, so no matter what alternatives emurge, they intend to sell that oil and coal for as much as they can for as long as they can. It’s nothing personal against consumers… it’s just good business.
Meanwhile, over in Germany where the environmentalists have strong political representation, solar power is widespread, with businesses paying people to put solar cells on their buildings… and it’s being used to power clean, efficient public transportation. Sure, they paid more money upfront to be green and energy efficient, but they’re reaping the rewards today with proportionately lower energy costs and increased productivity.
Environmentalists aren’t the problem. They’re just annoying know-it-alls who aren’t as shortsighted as our oil companies. Anyone could’ve reasonably determined that the price of oil would go up, as it got scarcer and more expensive to exploit. Lots of investors and speculators made the same determination as the environmentalists on this one… and they’re getting rich off it, as ordinary people’s expense. Why not blame them too?

Has anyone seen the new line of greeting cards by Hallmark? They are politcally-geared and really very funny. Since there are so many posts these days about the candidates, people should check them out, Republican, Democrat or whatever.
One reads: “Have a Republican-like birthday cake: Rich, White and Square”
Another reads: “Have a birthday celebration like a Democrat: “Party Now and Pay for it Later.”
Just a ittle levity in these stressful times.

Amy Werre: Not everyone is California is nuts, FYI. Keep in mind they only had 100 protestors. Not very many when you consider the population of the area.

California is and remains nutty..perhaps someone should have explained to the nuts off shore drilling will be occuring whether or not it is the US or not. Just if it is the US we can controll how the drilling is done (especially given our new tech) and it can be used to help lower prices here instead of China.) For the person assuming nuclear is toxic for the environment, it actually is reportedly one of the more green energy technology given the amount of waste it gives to the massive amounts of energy it produces. I wish posters would research a bit before going off emotionally without any facts.

This is progress from the years of dubya. Usually the protesters were placed a mile from event that dubya was attending.

The oil companies already have 70 million offshore acres that have not been drilled in the U.S. They are only drilling on 20 million acres. They don’t want to drill because if production is low, prices are high.
Republicans are trying to give the oil companies everything they ask for. Congress and the administration should force the oil companies to explore the land they already have leases to or lose it.

You want to rid yourselves of the risk of a terrorist attack and get out of Iraq etc., then NOW is the time to use our own oil and stop being so dependent on other countries.
I love how the liberals go on about stopping the war, down with republicans for being tough on foreign policy, dont touch 200miles off our coast, but yet will go about using thier SUV’s, aircons on all day. Get over yourselves, you’ve all helped create this problem.
Thank god John McCain is running for president. The only candidate who is sincere and has been for his long time in US politics

Environmentalists, such as these protestors, should be more concerned about others drilling for oil in the waters off our shores. The Chinese are already there. Now, how are you going to insure that they do not wreak havoc in our coastal waters? Our food, our tourism industries, and our marine life are all at risk. Who will provide protection. Should we do it ourselves while providing the safeguards we need? Unfortunately, we do not control all the parameters, and “no man is an island”. We cannot survive by just being the stalemates; we have to be the solutions.

So nice to hear from a well educated
nuclear physicist. Do you mind If we
dig a hole in your back yard, cause
we have a couple truck loads of nuclear
waste from one of our power plants
we want to rid of.

Georgia – Will you cut the crap? All of this trying to play natures superhero is nothing but a naive waste of time. The oceans are already polluted with raw sewage, rotting corpses, and every chemical under the sun.You will never stop the onslaught of modern industry. It is now a runaway train, with no brakes. I see how it is though, youre probably one of those people who drives I take it, and probably have a vast array of chemicals under your kitchen sink, and in your garage, cleaners, solvents that get flushed, or washed down the drain? You are doing your part to pollute this planet as much as the next person. You just want something to gripe about. Hypocrite. You should be far more concerned about Barack hussein Obamas lies, and deceit, along with his decision to join and remain in a racist church for 20 years. His complete lack of inexperience in too many areas of importance. No way Nobama

Obama will deliver….but what will it be? He speaks of change and hope. I think he’s hopeless. He has based his entire campaign on lies.
He will deliver higher taxes, socialist agenda, and make us a wimpy laughing stock. I am not a McCain devotee either; however, so far…as an independent…he has proven more to me.
Obama has not been truthful to the American people. I question his judgment. I have seen nothing from Obama yet except catchy phrases designed on emotion. There is nothing different than the same old rhetoric that I have heard since I could vote.
The only true statesman has been Ronald Reagan.
I WILL VOTE McCAIN IN 2008.

we need lower gas rates. I say drill now. Have watched people strugging to pay for gas to go to work. Children suffering from high food cost. Talk is all you hear. blah blah. blah……
Millions of dollars to keep war going an help other countries while there are so many homless people here in our country. Always thought charity starts at home.. What the hell happened to our country ? No longer our goverment those days are gone…..
I’m a retired citizen an hard to meet my medical needs. Thankful so far i have managed but the last few months have been bad due to expense of medicine ,gas,& food.. can only afford 2 trips to town twice in a months time.. Go Obama we need fresh blood in the white house..

“Abstinence vows break more easily than condoms.” … That part I agree with. …. Protesting is fine, hypocrisy and elitism aren’t. Ted Kennedy is in favor of renewable energy as long as he doesn’t see the windmills from his place. Californians want to drive cars and have cheap fuel but they don’t want the oil wells or refineries near them. … I guess only the poor should have windmills, refineries and oil wells within 50 miles. That’s elitism. …. There is no way to reduce use of resources or lower pollution levels without reducing population. Simply can’t be done. Anyone who drives a car of any size, does business with a store that has anything delivered by truck or rail, or has more than one child is a hypocrite for protesting drilling for oil. Since generation of electricity is the most polluting form of energy we have, use of electricity is just as hypocritical. … Protesting is great, if you have a better solution to a problem. Criticizing an idea without one of you own is dumb. … Anyone who is not hypocritical, elitist or dumb has a right to protest. The rest don’t. … Walk, don’t use electricity or even candles, don’t have more than one kid, then I’ll listen to your complaint.

You know what? After reading these comments every day in every poltical article there is, I have to say that most of the people posting are loonier than the candidates.

The Clintons are looney. Get them off the public stage. Get them to go home. We do not want the Clintons. I am against all Clintons at whatever they say or do. I will vote McCain in 08. He is the man, and I trust him. He is not old. He will not stay in Iraq for 100 years unless he has to. I like John McCain.

A 300 million $ raffle?
Are you serious? What a joke!
Has the Republican party been reduced to bake sales and raffles????
McMaverick switches from liberal to conservative so fast it makes you wonder if he’s gone senile. He’s all over the map. Do you really want someone that unstable in the WH?

John McCain is a joke ! Like George w. Bush – he represent some very old archaic ideas. We have an obligation to the waters, forests, lands and air – like no other nation, because we consume it and depend on it like no other nation – as Americans, we have to “Change” our management of these resources, it cannot be “SAME’O, SAME’O”! We have the largest supply of “Fresh Waters” in the world (The Great Lakes, and what have we done to it? What have we done to protect it. to give it the true value it is to this nation? Protect our waters and our ways of life for our children and grand children. Sincerely, Lake Hart, a Native American Writer.

Neither one of them knows how to begin to assist in the recession that we are in – we have 2 clowns running for office. If you don’t believe that, get in your funny car and go fill up.

Badger1: You are way off the wall! What are you railing against? This topic is about whether or not to drill off shore. McCain supports that, which is why the protestors were giving him flack. McCain has a short term plan and a long term plan to make us independent of foreign oil while also taking care of the environment. You may not be concerned about protecting the environment or energy independence, but I am. You are correct, however, we are all leaving our footprints on this planet, including you and me. You are the naive one, however, by believing that we do not need to do anything to stop the “onslaught of modern industry”. The air we breathe, the food we eat, and the health of the land and oceans can be, and have been, protected by laws. Read a little more.
There is no way I will support Obama, for many more reasons than what you listed. He does not own the high road on energy or the environment. He is the “change” artist that you cannot count on. I prefer the experience, knowledge, and wisdom of McCain.
“Hypocrite”? for McCain 08
