Barack Obama Explains the Meaning of Life

At a town hall meeting in Kaukauna, Wisc., Thursday afternoon, amidst questions about health care and the economy, a young man said he had a question for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, and Obama should "please be as intellectual or spiritual as you would like."

"Well this is a lot of pressure," Obama said to laugher.

"My question is: what does life mean to you?" the young man asked.

"Oh goodness," Obama said, a bit taken aback. "What does life mean to me?"

He stammered a bit as he contemplated the enormity of the query.

"Well, uh, I, uh…"

The crowd of 2,500 supporters at Kaukauna High School * laughed with apparent sympathy.

"I don’t know where to start on a question like that," Obama said. "Let me just say a couple things. Right now what I think about most is my daughters who are 10 and 7," he said, referring to his daughters Malia and Sasha. "And not that I’m biased but they are perfect in all ways."

To the young man who asked the question, Obama said, "when I was your age, I thought life was all about me. And how do make my way in the world and how do I become successful and how do I get the things that I want. And right now life for me revolves around those two girls. And I think about what kind of a place am I leaving them."

And with that, came the able pivot.

"Michelle and I have been incredibly blessed," Obama said. "As long as God’s looking over, my girls are going to be OK." They go to "great schools, will be able to afford college, are in good health and will be well cared for if they ever get sick.

But the country and the world they’re living in, Obama said, needs work.

"Are they living in a county where there’s a huge gap between a few who are wealthy and a whole bunch of people who are struggling every day?" Obama asked. "Are they living in a county that is still divided by race?

"Are they living in a country where because they’re girls they don’t have as much opportunity as boys do?

"Are they living in a country where we are hated around the world because we don’t cooperate with other countries as effectively as we should? Are they living in a country where they are threatened by terrorism and a nuclear explosion could happen in a major American city? Are they living in a country in which because of a lack of sensible energy we are not only ransoming our future, but we’re also threatening the very livelihood of the planet?"

Obama continued, "what life means to me is that every day I wake up trying to figure out how can I secure their futures and the futures of all children, …How can I make sure that we are giving a planet and a country to them that is better than the one we got? And, you know ,so I guess what I’ve discovered is that life doesn’t count for much unless you’re somehow giving yourself to something larger to yourself. And that’s part of my Christian faith. It’s also part of the reason I am running for president of the United States."

So.

That’s what life means to him. In case you were wondering.

Hey Obama your wife was not proud until you children were 8 and 10 (You do have wonderful looking children by the way and always be proud of them) but beside the point she state last year was the first time she is proud of this country!!
On the point of us co-operating with other countries, we gave blood for those countries!! what are they doing to co-operate with us should be the question!!

Posted by: spock | June 12, 2008, 2:48 pm 2:48 pm

So his life is about fear and he is passing that fear on to his children?
So his life is about living fearfully in a country that doesn’t agree with those that hate the country he lives in and he is afraid of that?
So if his life can be about being the victim it is ok to be afraid of those who set out with positive attitudes about themselves to do positive works without the need to take credit for them at every occasion?
So now that his ambitions for himself that dominated all of his thoughts are realized his thoughts are about the things he fears?
That isn’t a leader. That’s a lawyer.

I do think though its kind of sad that out natural reflex to what Obama says is to look for some political motivation. The guy answered a perfectly reasonable question openly and honestly, fair play to him.

In one of his speeches Senator Obama said this, “My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you’ll join me as we try to change it.”
QUESTION–Why does he now want to change it to a Socialist nation???
Obama is a flip-flopper or a liar. He is not presidential material.
He has no idea how to run this country. He failed his state senate district.

Remarkably, for a likely possible president, Barack Obama can’t think well on his feet.

Posted by: Stephen Gianelli | June 12, 2008, 3:41 pm 3:41 pm

One is squaring the Mr.-Clean-of-the-Senate McCain, who teamed up with the remarkably principled Democrat Russ Feingold to sponsor historic campaign finance legislation, with the McCain who has brought big-money lobbyists into the center of his Senate office and campaign operation. Those connections with the Beltway bandits remind one that McCain was previously one of the “Keating Five”–senators whose support of deregulation, a code word for undermining legitimate government oversight of business shenanigans–facilitated the savings-and-loan crisis of the 1980s and ’90s. Not a happy association, at a time when the consequences of bank deregulation surfaces as the subprime mortgage lending scandal that is wrecking the US economy.

Posted by: Average Jim | June 12, 2008, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm

First class as usual. I wonder how McCain would answer that question.

Posted by: Yancey | June 12, 2008, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm

It is difficult to square the ex-POW’s unequivocal condemnation of torture with his accommodation to President Bush’s torture policy. Holding Senate hearings on torture, McCain brought the weight of his own experiences against the Administration’s flimsy rationalizations. He even held to that principled position during the early primaries, but then ended up voting for legislation that has helped make torture legal, at least in the eyes of the President.

Posted by: Average Jim | June 12, 2008, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm

It was not the first time that McCain had risen on the Senate floor to accuse the Pentagon of being in cahoots with defense industry lobbyists, and he does deserve high marks for being one of the few members of Congress willing to hold the military-industrial complex accountable. But we hear little from that McCain these days as he goes on and on praising a pointless war in Iraq that has become the main excuse for wasting trillions in so-called defense dollars.
This last is the deal breaker. It is simply not possible to be a genuine small-government-give-taxpayers-a-break President while planning to pour trillions more down the rat hole of failed imperial adventures.

I am glad he cares about his wife and children but the fact is as a Senator & both are Harvard grads his daughters will NEVER have to worry about health care or how to pay for their college loans like the rest of us. Just like Bush those girls are going to get in to Harvard with both parents being alumni and as Senator he will never worry about how he will pay for a hospital bill. Just like Sen Kennedy he has the best both his & our tax dollars can buy in health care not like the regular person. By the way I am a NP and my son is in law school and will be paying his loans off for years!

As for Mr. Obama’s response. Not only do I believe that it was genuine and truthful but it goes the very fabric of who he is and what his campaign is about. When some people wake up in the morning their minds aren’t on how quickly they can outsmart the next person or stab someone in the back. Or worse yet destroy another families hopes and dreams. Some of us know that we are called to fulfill a higher purpose. Something uniquely ordained by the creator himself just for us. We are here to foster a better understanding and set a higher standard. It’s part of the HUMAN spirit to want to rise above adversity and bring others along with you and for parents it’s why they’re created to watch over children. So I think that not only does Senator want that for his girls but for yours and mine as well and for that he should be commended, b/c in the face of all adversity he is still on that path.
Thank you Sen. Obama for helping us all recognize what life SHOULD mean to us all.

It was a great answer to a very complicated question for which there is no correct answer.
He put his daughters first. Then he talked about everyones children who are not as fortunate as his may be. Then he talked about our responsibility to this planet and our world. And he ended by saying that it was all grounded in his faith.
I am amazed that anyone would criticize this. When for so many people the meaning of their lives revolves around themselves. This was an incredibly selfless answer that shows how much he truly cares about people.

That is yet another reason why Mr. Obama is above the rest. We know that the hate speech on here is being coordinated by right wing extremists because real feminists wouldn’t use their sex to discriminate and real femenists know what discrimination is so they won’t discriminate against others. Those of us who value truth, don’t stand by and let THOSE people run OUR country anymore. They are Anti-American not Pro-American. THEY are the real bigots and “protectionists.” All of this will be turned around on them and THEY will be exposed for who they really are extremists.

Clearly this is the guy John McCain wants to get in a town hall battle with. When the shorter, prunier, less charismatic, poor public speaker demonstrates that his penchant for saying stupid/damaging things when unscripted next to a polished, intelligent and trustworthy opponent like Obama, people will vote for him out of pity!

Reading some of these posts, it’s pretty clear the Republican attack machine is posing as disaffected Clinton supporters to encourage division in the Democratic party. Sorry, boys, not gonna happen!
Barack doesn’t walk on water, but he’s a damn sight better than McCain. He’ll appoint Supreme Court judges who will uphold a woman’s right to control her own body. He’ll reform the tax code to give the middle class a break. He’ll offer more humane leadership, restore our standing in the world, and bring our troops home from Iraq.
The president of EMILY’S LIST and Madeline Albright made it very clear today. Obama is the choice for anyone who values a more just America for all Americans. And while polls are not foolproof, they sure seem to suggest that he’s on the right track – uniting his party and our nation.
By the way, I think he gave that kid in Wisconsin a pretty good answer to his question.

If it looks like women voted against Obama because you want to send a message because your mad, you will never get a woman in office to be president. Remember! it takes more then just women to put a woman in office it takes all people of all colors, and genders. So be nice in defeat or pay a price for many years to come. Remember we are all Democrats lets play nice….

I loved Baracks meaning of life. It adds to a young person a view that they normally don’t see.
Many times when we get older we say if i was young again i would do such and such. Well every day is today and do what you can so you never look back.
Myself i have gotten and i have given away with no regards to possesion. I know that like the birds and the flowers i will be fed and clothed. It all depends on what we allow ourselves by being open minded as to what we do eat and how we are clothed.
Clothes are not about material things and what we eat isn’t about food. I cloth myself and i feed myself with love. Barack also does the same as he gives freely of himself to the world in hopes of a wonderful future for all as well as his two girls.

“john mccains life is on fear, bush has interjected you all with fear”
That would be ‘injected’, B. And no, fear isn’t why I react to his empty rhetoric with skepticism. I react like that because his are the lines of a used car salesman, not the man who should be the leader of the free world. One will not solve our problems with speeches and high ideals. Practical competent leaders understand the need for action. Nothing in his life or career or philosophy offers a scintilla of proof that he has that understanding.

You know, I’m registered Independent, and didn’t know for sure who I was going to vote for, but I do now.
1. I was struck by the thoughtfulness and the obvious sincerity Senator Obama had answering the profoundest of questions. He knows himself, his values, and what he’d like to give the world. I was impressed, but not entirely sold.
2. Then, I started reading the nasty, hate filled junk from the people who are obviously Republicans and “conservatives.” I was appalled and confused. What happened to the Christian values like judge not lest you be judged, humility, and love?
Sigh. I’m so sick and tired of the fear mongering, nasty people calling my fellow Americans “unpatriotic” or “terrorists” that I am going to make a positive choice and choose to HOPE.
Senator Obama, you have my vote, and I’m going to go to your site and give you some money. The first time I’ve ever done that.
:) And you know something else, it feels pretty good to have at least a little bit of hope once again.
OK Republicans – go after me! Call me brainwashed and stupid. :) But know that you just lost an Independent to Obama.

Obama represents the best in all of us. He responded well to a “trick” question. Abortion is not the only issue. You can tell the man was young who asked the question. Abortion may be morally objectionable to some but it is also wrong to try to control a woman’s body and not let her make choices about her future.

Did Obama just tell a gym full of people that the US is hated around the world, and the reason for that hate is because we don’t co-operate with other countries?
I don’t think he should be talking about this country being *hated*. That’s pretty ugly rhetoric.
I do agree we have some difficulties, but I’ve been in many parts of the world recently where we are very admired and respected.
Also, the Iranian leaders don’t hate us because we don’t co-operate. AlQaeda doesn’t hate us because we don’t cooperate.

Thank God, one of the oldest and most cherished principles of Anglo-Saxon jurisprudence has reaffirmed: The Great Writ, the Writ of Habeas Corpus which allows a prisoner to challenge his incarceration, to require the authorities to prove in a court of law that their confinement is legal or free them in the alternative. And, McCain, right on the heels of Bush, immediately deplored the ruling. These are the people charged with upholding the Constitution and guarding our freedoms. At the same time they did all they could to hold these prisoners on the basis of allegations alone. Some of these prisoners are only in custody because our government paid informants thousands of dollars to inform on others. The result, many who knew no more about terrorist activities than you or I, were arrested and have been incarcerated for as long as seven years without seeing the inside of a courtroom.

Obama doesn’t have to explain a dam thing to you. If he did, it would not matter anyway. I’ll tell you how, he called up a friend and neighbor and asked if he wanted to sale a piece of his property that was not being used, the friend said yes and he bought the additional property to enlarge his yard for the girls.
Initially, he purchased a the home, but before doing so he asked a friend to take a look at it before he made the purchased. The former owners have already stated that Rezo had nothing to do with the sale of their property except of looking over the property for Obama.

Exactly what is your point. McCain’s children will never have to worry either unless the beer company goes out of business and the stock market crashes, then they all will have something to worry about.

Senator Obama answered the question in the way he thought the audience would believe. In his mind, he was probably thinking: Meaning of Life–Let see- Getting elected to the Presidency any way I can. Yea, that is the meaning of my life. That is why I was put on this earth–to be the first African American to con the voters into making me their President.

wow. one of the weirdest questions for a candidate.. what IS the point? what was McCain lets fight a 100 years war answer? if its important.. I guess every politician better be answering it.. and every voter too.. if this is important.. then everyone in the world needs to answer it…. and yet this is highly personal.. very similar to religion.. and not really worthy of talking to candidates about.. whats next? the sound of one hand clapping? When a tree falls? Why does a chicken cross the road? how bout lets stick to issues? the meaning of life I will answer for myself. and I dont care what mccain or obama or anyone else thinks about it.. thats THEIR conclusion.. and THEIR path.. Well this certainly did turn into an attack fest, didn’t it? So many interested in smacking down this upstart Senator who has the audacity to run for President.
He must really scare them.
I found his reaction to a good question entirely plausible, and his answer unusually candid – especially for a politician.

Posted by: LGF | June 12, 2008, 10:28 pm 10:28 pm

Obama is awesome. I love that he thinks of his kids like that.
Come to think of it, his whole career has been about thinking of others, from his time as a community organizer, to his work in the Illinois Senate where he passed ethics reforms in the government, civil rights laws working with the police, health care programs, tax rebates….to his time in the Senate where he focused on nuclear disarmament, government ethics, federal spending transparency, and other fine pieces of legislation.
If some politicians said this, I would just call it pandering. But, looking at his career and the work he’s done, I believe that these issues are genuinely important to him.

Posted by: Kiku | June 12, 2008, 10:32 pm 10:32 pm

@MayBee
I don’t think he is talking about al Qaeda or Iran but more likely the usually America-friendly countries. Hate is a strong word, but there is definitely a growing resentment and anger against America here in Europe due to Guantanamo, CIA’s extraordinary rendition program, the Iraq war scam and Bush’s bullying diplomacy style.
It is really quite sad: Shortly after 9/11 everybody here was sympathetic to America. But Bush has spend all that goodwill and then some.

Posted by: Tordenskiold | June 12, 2008, 10:53 pm 10:53 pm

Once again, Obama spoke with grace and wit in response to a difficult question, and spoke from the heart. He certainly does lift a weary country. And people, you can bury your heads in the sand if you like, but our nation’s reputation has been badly tarnished. Those who truly love our country don’t run around screaming “We’re the greatest!” They work to make it better.

@ Tordenskiold
“It is really quite sad: Shortly after 9/11 everybody here was sympathetic to America. But Bush has spend all that goodwill and then some.”

I can’t abide by the ‘after 9/11 everybody was sympathetic to America’ argument. We were attacked and of course people felt sorry for us. I feel sorry for Burma and China right now, but that doesn’t mean I’m likely to approve of their next few governing decisions.
The goodwill was not sustainable– eventually we weren’t going to be the victim anymore.

” I don’t think he is talking about al Qaeda or Iran but more likely the usually America-friendly countries. Hate is a strong word, but there is definitely a growing resentment and anger against America here in Europe due to Guantanamo, CIA’s extraordinary rendition program, the Iraq war scam and Bush’s bullying diplomacy style.”

He said the “around the world”, not Europe. And you know, it is Europe leading the way on dealing with Iran, a process of which Obama is quite critical. I was none too fond of Chirac and Shroeder, but I’d never say I hated France and Germany. If Europeans think their countries aren’t involved in extraordinary rendition, they are fooling themselves (according to Colin Powell).
Finally, Obama said it is because aren’t “cooperating”. Like it’s a kindergarten world.
I’ve been to Asia, Africa, India, and parts of Europe in the past few years and I have never felt “hated”. I have had people stop me on the street just to tell me how much they dream of coming to America.
It’s just a horrible thing for the man running for President to say.

I defy any of you complainers to stand in front of a 2,500 people and truthfully answer questions in complete sentences with grace and wit.
I don’t agree with everything that Sen. Obama has proposed. But between him and Sen. McCain, he is the obvious choice.
Here is my quick comparison.
SEN. OBAMA
His fiscal policies are sound, his plan to gain back our reputation as protectors and not torturers is stellar. He values education and health care for all Americans. He thinks about this country’s future. He is even-tempered, has good judgment and want to bring our troops home from Iraq!
He is running a groundbreaking campaign and is fairly consistent in his views om most issues. He’s 46 and married to his one and only wife, Michelle, 43, and he is devoted to his children.
SEN. McCAIN
He says he doesn’t know much about the economy, he agrees with torture, he doesn’t care about poor people who work but still can’t afford healthcare. He has a bad temper and he also doesn’t care how long the troops stay in Iraq.
He is running a lackluster, typical campaign. He changes his views on major issues frequently. He’s 72 and twice married. First wife Carol, 70; current wife, Cindy, 55. He doesn’t mention his children much.

Anyone who here tries to dirty up and negatively attack what has just been so deeply heartfelt and eloquently said, is just admitting to the world how small and petty and ugly they are. They can’t for a single moment acknowledge that another human being could possibly have an inspired moment.

‘CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN’

I can speak eloquently as well. And so can just about any writer of fiction. All they have to do is read their words. But guess what? His lilting little speech don’t mean crap if Iran or N. Korea is throwing nukes at us. Get back on the plane and get off Fantasy Island people. These are dangerous times and they call for a strong leader. I’m sure McCain loves his family and God as well, but it has no place in a political discussion.

Oh please…he was asked an odd question and he rallied with a great answer…if you haven’t heard, McCain’s campaign lied to Fox News…Fox, much to their chagrin, had to correct their previous report and admit that McCain filled his first Town Hall meeting with supporters…not the democrats and independents he promised. Clearly he knows he can’t handle any surprise questions.
If you don’t like Obama, pick your battles and attack him for something else, not how he answered this question when your own candidate can’t handle any questions that he hasn’t written himself.

Obama realized and told us why he is running for President.
Like all the rest of us he just can’t ignore what George Bush and the Republicans have done to this country and planet over the past 8 years. We absolutely need to leave this planet and country a better place for our kids.
It is not that George Bush doesn’t love his children – just that they are not his highest priority.
This country is in deep tofu and the planet in even deeper still. We need change for this reason and McCain can’t do it if he is busy packing his townhall meetings with his own supporters.

The ugliness of some of the anti-Obama comments makes me sure that I am supporting the right candidate for President of this great nation. What I am seeing is a campaign of hope and a belief in the betterment of the planet opposed to a campaign of slinging racial epithets and false accusations. Let’s stick to issues and not personal attacks, shall we? What has happened to civility and decency. Both men are good men but they come from different paradigms. Let them present themselves and their policies and then choose who you want to be your leader but please, stop with all the smearing. I choose Obama because he speaks my truths. I don’t hate his opponent. He just doesn’t speak for me. Too bad we can’t keep it all civil. It saddens me that racism and hatred still rules the minds of so many Americans. If you think it doesn’t, take a closer look.

The amount of raw hatred and utter disrespect shown to Obama is amazing and depressing. I can understand disagreement with policies and positions – this is after all a political contest. But to demonize and degrade another human being because you disagree with them says more about you than the person you attack. Obama is not perfect – no one is but he is the best I’ve seen in my lifetime and he has my vote. I’ll choose hope over hate any day.

Posted by: Debra | June 13, 2008, 12:44 am 12:44 am

Obama continued, “what life means to me is that every day I wake up trying to figure out how can I secure their futures and the futures of all children, …….what I’ve discovered is that life doesn’t count for much unless you’re somehow giving yourself to something larger to yourself.”
Is it any wonder that this man uses the words “you” and “we” more often than he uses the word “I”??
Obama is truly a self-less man who has the best interests of others in his heart.
For those of you who are critical of how he answered this question, or of the fact that he stammered a bit at the beginning of his answer -
I ask you – can YOU answer this question from your heart? and with a 10 second notice? Could you do it in front of a room full of strangers?
He answered the question, with heart. He did not spew political rhetoric. For many of you, no matter what he said, you would not like it – let us face that truth.
The hate spewed here in some of the comments is sad indeed. No wonder the moral fiber of the country is falling apart.
This country needs Barack Obama as our next president.

Thank you Skywolf, for this comment:
“I can understand disagreement with policies and positions – this is after all a political contest. But to demonize and degrade another human being because you disagree with them says more about you than the person you attack.”
I am continually saddened by the personal attacks against Obama’s character. He, like the rest of us, is a human being. Some may disagree with his policies, and that is fine. But who here is so perfect as to be able to judge or ridicule another’s character?
No one.
I would also like to add:
He answered this question with the kind of personal insight rarely witnessed in a public figure.
When I vote in November, it will be for the person who sincerely wants to provide a safe world for his children, my children, and all the children of this earth – and that vote will be for Barack Obama.

people around me were wondering WHY Julie was in tears, so I shared…they all agreed and gee guess what? the 15 people around me are VOTING OBAMA and after I talked to another 25 or so, I got them Voting for OBAMA also !!
There was a VERY positive response to Barack’s answer and I KNOW we will kick some butt in NOVEMBER !!

I don’t think about what life means to me. I think more about how to correct my weaknesses and how I can be more aware of the feelings of other people. I think I know a little more now about what it means to be selfish and unselfish. Life is really just a shell to carry out your existence, and the less you think about yourself and questions like what life means to you, and more about learning, facing reality, and taking responsibility for your actions, the better the life you will lead.

Senator Obama’s answer to an unusual question was one most people would agree with and admire. It is the same answer that someone with a family would come up with. Barack and Michelle’s girls are beautiful and his family is complete and healthy. That is good reason to look forward to every day.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but he is right, America is hated more than it has ever been in the past. This administration has taken it upon itself to act against the international laws that all civilized nations live by.
If we had spent 1 10th of the amount we spent on this war, in helping fight hunger, global warming, enviromental technology, etc. We would not have lost thousands of lives; and earned the disrespect of the International community.
I look forward to the day, when we can all be proud to be Americans again. Not not selfish, egotistical, bullies.
Thank God for Obama, and God help him in his quest!
We have come a long way, when a man of color that has had to fight all his life to be accepted, embodies more of the true American spirit than the majority of the politicians.

Want to give them my love, play with them laugh with them ,keep them safe. When i read about those girls who were murdered recently, I cried for their parents, and prayed for my kids safety. If i had a chance to be president, I would like to make this world safe for all the kids, including mine. i could aim higher. Only a parent can understand and see the honesty and truthfulness of obama’s answer. To answer a question like this, one has to get one’s reference point first, and then the answer just comes from deep inside the soul.

People who are so quick to condemn Obama are the same sort of people who’ve never done anything for their community or other people. Obama is one of the few people who has ever run for president who has actually given up a good salary and given his own time to the impoverished citizens of this country. I can understand people disliking Obama’s plans for our country or his political views, understand them not wanting to vote for him, but the comments they make about him are so personal, angry, and vindictive. I can think of only one reason for that, and it’s despicable. People blame Obama for attending Rev Wright’s church but those same people have never picked up a book to read about African American religion in this country. Those people never consider the fact that over 8,000 other good American people, both white and black attend Trinity church.

I love “Rev. Dr. E Buzz Miller”‘s comment about the stammering, as if that’s REALLY the only problem with Bush. Not the two wars he started, the 4000 soldiers he sent to die (for Osama who still roams free), not for the failed gas prices, the failing economy, etc. No, the reason we all hate Bush is clearly because he’s simply not a great speaker. Ironic, coming from someone with two titles, obviously faked, since “Rev. Dr.” isn’t even the proper way to title oneself.

Hope crushes fear and cynicism– 2008.
We are blessed to have a candidate who still believes in our capacity for greatness and our ability to solve problems and move into this century.
As for the racists– posting venom– you have to make a choice, either vote for change, or vote for McSame. Habeous corpus was just preserved by one vote in the Supreme Court yesterday. 5 out of 9 justices affirmed that this is an important historic right– the right not to be held in prison by the government without charges. But for one vote, we might have lost that right.
Vote for McSame and we will lose the Supreme Court, along with other rights, and we’ll keep trudging forward in a one trillion dollar fiasco– called war in Iraq, maybe we’ll even take on Iran.
Let’s think of our own children for once.

It is easy to understand Sen. Obama when you are spiritually aware. This man sees the world just as it should be “everyone makes mistakes and deserve forgiveness”. It is obvious to me, Sen. Obama sees the good in all people – even Sen. Clinton. When she was kneecapping him at every turn, he still considered her family – The Democratic Family and never stooped to malign her even though he had plenty of ammunition to do so. It is not his character and that “my friend” is why I would count it an honor to have him as My President.

To all who have a major problem with Obama stammering before giving the answer to this question:
Imagine that he hadn’t stammered at all. Wouldn’t you be ranting then that he knew the question all along and just tried to act as if he had heard it for the first time?
Obviously you all are not very experienced on behalf of speaking in front of a crowd without preparation. Sen. Obama was asked a spontaneous question, and to those one doesn’t very likely know the answer immediately (save by conincidence). Of course virtually everyone will stutter a bit trying to answer elegantly, that is, give an answer which doesn’t only involve three words, like “It means ” (the supposed third word in the above example would replace the brackets ). This question part is no exam for which you can prepare or a speech you can rehearse. As you might have guessed from the text, the questioner didn’t just want to hear a three-words answer. Had he given such a one people would rant again, but it would be much much more significant and justified than your petty attempts of badmouthing Sen. Obama.
Come to think of it: Maybe I’m wrong and (some of) you ranters think you really are experienced in giving a speech in front of a crowd (maybe because you attended Rhetorics class or whatever). In that case: Shame on you. You obviously didn’t learn anything.

“Obama doesn’t have to explain a dam thing to you. If he did, it would not matter anyway.”
That speaks for itself. You do know how much you sound like a George W. Bush supporter right? Same game; different tie.
The man is running for President. There is a lot he has to answer for as will anyone who steps up to the office.

Here we have someone honestly responding to what makes life worthwhile, his family … and the opportunity to do something worthwhile for his fellow human beings… and all some of you have to do is spout mindless, negative drivel. If you’d just open your eyes…. you might see the future. But that’s the problem isn’t it? You’re afraid of the future. Sorry folks..It’s coming. It will be here soon… And you don’t have to be afraid… you just have to open your eyes… and your soul.

What about soemthing like, “we’re born, we love and are loved, we do good and bad, we suffer and we die.” Fairly simple, reasonably accurate, secular and the family isn’t even mentioned. Given more time, Mr. Obama would have provided a more eloquent response.

Lawrence – Bumper sticker slogans is not what makes a President!!
By the way Obama states this is the Greatest Country (only after he has been criticized) but wants change, well if your great why would you want to change. Oh thats right he does not want us to be the greatest, Europe is jealous from what he said!!

Barack reflexively interprets even the most basic question with depth, insight, and caring. I feel bad for folks who block out his messages — they are missing a political opportunity of a lifetime.

No vote for Obama from me. I do not trust him and certain am concerned about Michelle Obama’s bitterness and depression.

What a sweet story! Obama will be a great president! Much better than senile angry McCain.

In life, love is all that matter. Obama has it in an unquantifiable measure, please let him have it all. For no man can lead his fellow man without first loving him.The Republicans may have love but not in reasonable quantity.Above all Obama has shown that the ability of a man to express himself effectively is the shortest cut to excellence.

Just a thought that I keep on my desktop: “Our strategy should be not only to confront empire, but to lay siege to it. To deprive it of oxygen. To shame it. To mock it. With our art, our music, our literature, our stubbornness, our joy, our brilliance, our sheer relentlessness– and our ability to tell our own stories. Stories that are different from the ones we’re being brainwashed to believe. The corporate revolution will collapse if we refuse to buy what they’re selling– their ideas, their version of history, their wars, their weapons, their notion of inevitability. Remember this: We be many and they be few. They need us more than we need them. Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.”

Nice answer? Huh? It did devolve into a campaign speech and rather stock answer.
He’s a politician not a messiah, and I will not be voting for him based on his lack of experience and accomplishment.

I see that some here pretend to be upset that Obama noted the hatred many people now have for America. Is that because they are so willfully ignorant that they haven’t noticed it themselves? Or are they so indoctrinated by the Neocon swindle system that they can’t stand the truth?
Well, there is all too much hatred fror us in the world; it is not hatred of our “goodness,” nor is it hatred for our “freedom.” It is hatred of our government’s hypocrisy, for its refusal to live by our nation’s stated ideals. There is little hatred annywhere else for our values or for our principles of justice. In fact, the greatest haters of those ideals of our country’s are the very Neocons now misleading us, and those dupes here spouting their contempt for those who would restore adherence to those ideals.
The fact is that our Bush-Cheney government is the worst in our history, and it has attacked constantly the Constitution that forms the basis for our form of government, and the ideals of justice that underlie that Constitution. And the big haters here are undisguised; whatever they may call themselves, they do not represent the best of America.
And they won’t prevail this time!

I want to take issue with the person who said that what Barack said ‘doesn’t matter if north korea is throwing nukes at us.”  That is one of many places where such crass words leveled against him are wrong, for a very simple reason.
What matters in any crisis, whether it’s the next Katrina or all-out war or shortage or famine or drought, is how we work together or fail to.  How we treat each other, or else abuse each other instead.  How we band together or insist we’re only for ourselves (our family, church, class, gender, race, etc).  If we don’t have any reason to band together, then when crisis comes, no amount of government intervention will do us any good.  Either we’ll be helping one-another to make it through together, or looting each other’s houses.
I reject the latter view, utterly.  And I am not alone.  And Barack Obama is a big part of why I feel brave enough to say so these days. We stand or fall on how we treat our fellow human beings, American and otherwise.  So do we stand together, or fall apart?  That’s the choice Barack embodies for me, and I’ve made mine.
Anyone who thinks it’s still ‘us against them’ will eventually end up ‘me against all’.  I choose ‘we’.  We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.  Barack Obama has just shown a critical mass of us that we’re allowed … that we have the responsibility…  to say so, believe in it, and do it.

Many refer to the ties Obama has.In fact, we as americans have ties…for we are all a part of the whole and all misdeeds reflect on us all . That said, we can’t always be vetting those we deal with to accomplish a good deed.Did Obama involve himeself in some criminal activity? If so, why was he not prosecuted? It seems to me, this wasn’t the case, and I for one, have known many people, had many dealings, and yet I was not involved with anyones personal misdeeds. Not held accountable for the acts of others. If my banker kills his wife, it is not my fault, really.Should it then be questioned if my home loan was sanctioned by a killer?

Its sad that we let emotions run our lives. Not proud for 30+ years? oh please! people who take that comment literally are the same ones that take scripture word by word.
As for the candidate I am glad to hear the man instead of the canned speech. After a while we need to see the real person. He is genuine but I see him rely on his prompter more. Probably tired of the year already…
In Barack I see a person that is smart, inexperienced but sincere and honorable. We have experience everywhere in Washington and they have proven (without a doubt!) that using a failed metric as ‘time’ for merit does not work.
We need honest and honorable. Not seasoned and dishonorable…

I’m an American, born and raised. Its not the country that is hated. Its the ideals of the common American that is frowned down upon. The American people are waking up from a dream. Waking up to realize that they are ignorant and small minded. Instead of people educating their selves, they rely on gossip and rumor.
To all my fellow Americans: Get smart, or there isn’t going to be much left of our country to fight for.

To those who say “Michelle wasn’t proud of America”
What is there, in a Bush run America, to be proud of? Illegal war? Illegal detention? Illegal spying? Record profits for big oil? Which is it?
I cannot be proud of our country until we elect the right man for the job and undo what Bush has done to this great land of ours.
To those who say “He isn’t experienced?”
I say it is YOU people, those of you voting for “experienced” republicans that have thoroughly ruined this country, indebted your grand children’s grand children with Reaganomics and failed imperialist foreign policies, allowing the military industrial complex to dictate our economy, no health care, dilapidated schools and infrastructure, unaffordable college. If this is “experience” I want nothing to do with it. Any fool can start a fight but it is a man of wisdom and experience that knows when not to fight.
I’m sorry that “experience” argument holds NO water and is a slimy republican talking point to avoid answering the hard questions. And it’s typical of people to dumb to think for themselves.
We’re AMERICANS first and foremost, I suggest you find out what that really means before you vote, lest you vote for more of the same.

We so badly need someone with this caring and expansive view in the White House. Especially now. In addition to an IQ ‘tsunami’ in January, 2009; this makes it seem we’ll get a compassion ‘tsunami’ as well. Bless all who read this.

Obama would be a good president if he weren’t the typical Democrat wanting to take all of our income and give it back piece by piece in government programs.
Also, his plan for national health care is horrific. I can’t believe people buy into this concept. The Federal government ruined retirement with social security, education with no child left behind, and now you want them in charge of your HEALTH!!??
People need to learn from the mistakes of the past!

I agree with everything that Obama said except for the one part at the end about Christianity. It’s a shame that in today’s world that he still has to bring religion into play to be elected. The large contingent of “conservative christians” is the reason that Bush won an election, and to pander to them simply to be elected should be unnecessary. He is clearly the best candidate, and is poised to accomplish great things if given the chance to run the United States. With that said, I at least believe that some progress is being made to begin to dispose of the ignorance possessed by so many of the inhabitants (and unfortunately, swing-state voters), and hopefully this will snowball into a better nation and a better world over the horizon.

Oh Lovely, now I have a politician explaining the meaning of Life! Sigh!

Posted by: Johnny Bee | June 13, 2008, 5:50 pm 5:50 pm

I think as always, Obama answered the question with poise and confidence. Whether or not he is as genuine as he seems is still yet to be seen. And the answer to his question is yes. Yes he is living in a Country/World that has a huge gap between rich and poor. Yes, they are living in a Country/World Divided by race. And Yes to everything else. He says that life should be about leaving behind a better world. Well that cant happen through a corrupt society and political system. It has to start with every individual.

“Oh Lovely, now I have a politician explaining the meaning of Life! Sigh!”
Daniel – he was ASKED the question.
“On the point of us co-operating with other countries, we gave blood for those countries!!”
Spock – alright! that’s the kind of attitude we need in this emerging global community.
Seriously, get over it. overall, we’ve taken far more blood that we have given. that includes many many innocent lives.

I will not have as a friend or associate any of the hateful, small-minded people who comprise Obama’s detractors.

Sounds to me like the guy who asked the question
was a plant and Obama’s answer was scripted.
All you Obama folks need to get a life and realize YOU are just as worthy as he is – he is not more than
you. Honor yourselves. GET A LIFE – you are feeding off him.

Dear “Humane” Your statement shows YOU to be that which you abhor. Try compassion, try to accept that
others who have a different opinion are just as valid as
you feel yourself to be. See beyond Obama into your
own heart. You do not need him. You are complete.
