Clinton Returns

ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf reports: After several weeks under the radar, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton made her first appearance on Capitol Hill since ceding the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. She missed a morning procedural vote on the housing bill, but arrived in grand fashion for the Democrats’ weekly strategy lunch, pulling up in a three car motorcade to cheers from 50 or so interns and staffers gathered on the East steps of the Capitol Building. As a campaigner, Clinton would arrive on Capitol Hill for votes in a tan SUV with blacked out windows. But today it was a smaller, black Lincoln Town car. She did, however, have on a smart, loud turquoise or aqua pantsuit that would have looked right at home on the campaign trail. An unintended and symbolic taunt, Clinton had to walk around the much larger, parked vice presidential caravan, with its several enormous armored limousines. Vice President Dick Cheney was on Capitol Hill for a weekly strategy session with fellow Republicans and arrived not long before Sen. Clinton. Clinton shook hands and spoke briefly with the gathered supporters, but avoided questions from journalists asking her how it felt to be back and what her first order of business would be. It was not entirely clear who the supporters who greeted Clinton worked for. Several who were asked for their names said they could not say who they were or where they worked and could not talk to the press, but presumably they hailed from the Senate offices of Clinton and other Democrats. Upon entering the building, Clinton was greeted by some of her biggest supporters in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, the senior Senator from New York, and Sens. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan. Outside the building, another one of her supporters, Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, who harbored his own Presidential ambitions earlier in the ’08 process, said it will obviously be a transition for the former presidential candidate to leave the excitement and adrenaline of daily campaigning. "There’s that charge that you get out of campaigning," Bayh said. "That’s not going to be the same. But as you can see," he said, pointing to the staffers gathered on the Capitol steps to cheer her on, "she has an important role to play and I’m sure she’ll play it well." Bayh said he had not spoken with Clinton since she had announced her departure from the presidential race, but he was hopeful she would seize the opportunity to return to the Senate as a change-making junior Senator from New York. "I hope we haven’t gotten to the point in our country where being one of the most prominent members of the United States Senate, somehow, is not good enough," Bayh said. "You can make a bigger difference as the chief executive of the country, but you can make a heck of a difference as a United States Senator."

Welcome back senator Clinton, you’re a strong leader and can overcome the pain easily. I’m still hoping you will be madame president in 2008 or 2012.

To all you saying you will vote for McCain instead of Obama because she didn’t win-GET OVER IT!!!!! Do you really want to explain to your kids why you voted for a war, a bad economy and a dirty environment??!! By voting McCain you are voting against Clinton and the future of our country. Real smart!

Hippemom – They don’t get it, and they never will. You’re wasting your breath. At least take solace in the fact that these people represent a minuscule sliver of her supporters as most have already migrated to Obama (according to most polls).
Remember, there are always a small group of embittered individuals that feel “disenfranchised” after every election. The big difference this year is that there is a candidate who appeals to a much wider coalition of voters than in years past, so any backlash is negligible this time around.

By Hillary going on the campaign trail with Obama she can show how strong she really is.She can expand her stated committment to the country and make it beleivable to those who thought she was in it for self fulfillment. If she focuses on the policy that Obama brings and expresses the importance and deflects the attacks that come to him she could transcend her own presidential bid.Evertime I see Biden or Kerry standing up to the republican machine I feel invigorated. We have lions in the dem party.Lets hear the lioness roar!
Go Hillary!
Hillary, Hillary, Hillary

Too many Obama supporters are disgusting and vile when they call someone racist, stupid or ignorant for not voting for their corrupt god. They need to grow up and become more informed.
Senator McCain will win over Obama by 70% to 28%. Just wait and see.

Posted by: Mary | June 24, 2008, 2:56 pm 2:56 pm

Just saw on the news that Nancy Pelosi thinks hillary should “GET OVER” the gender thing. I can’t even imagine any person telling Obama to get over the race thing..Society is so much more comfortable with sexism.

Less than 30% of Hillary supporters are now supporting Obama. Those who say other wise are just hoping and distoring.

Posted by: Mai | June 24, 2008, 3:02 pm 3:02 pm

Mary we only call people stupid and racist when. A. they are going to vote for Mccain simply because Obama has a different skin color. (And yes I have talked to many people like this…so they are in fact racist. And the stupidity comes in when people say they are now voting for Mccain which just goes to show they are stupid and really never actually cared about the polices and issues that Hillary was running on.

Posted by: marie | June 24, 2008, 3:03 pm 3:03 pm

A. they are going to vote for Mccain simply because Obama has a different skin color. (And yes I have talked to many people like this…so they are in fact racist)”
Yup, I’d call that racist, although what do you call the people that are only voting for him because of his skin color? Hmmmmmmm?

“Hillary is with Obama.

Posted by: Mack | June 24, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

Stupid. No one should vote for a candidate just for the skin color OR just because they are a woman! That shows pure stupidity.

Posted by: marie | June 24, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

If someone votes for a candidate for the sole reason of skin color, yes, they are racist. But I can think of hundreds of reason for not voting for Obama.
I will support Clinton, but never Obama. He is not honest and is a true blue socialist. I actually know no one who will be voting for Obama.

“Welcome back Hillary. Do what you have to get done in the Senate so you are ready to run again in 2012, after McCain’s four years. We still have your back and we are clearing the path. PUMA”
Blah blah blah!!!
So let me get this straight…Bitter Clinton supporters would rather have 4 years of McCain repeating the policies of George Bush, just because they’re still mad that Clinton didn’t win..They’re banking on the fact that if Obama lost (which he won’t) that Clinton would run again.
It’s time to stop being selfish children and grow up!!! Voting for McCain will not help the plight of our country, it will only continue the backwards policies that the country has had to endure for 8 years!!!
Bill and Hillary Clinton are supporting Obama and will campaign with him. All this venom spewing that “Obama supporters are vile and disgusting human beings” is childish and ignorant.
Not one of these faux Democrats has explained why they would vote for John McSame other than to spite Obama. It’s because if you support any of McSame’s policies you were never a TRUE Democrat to begin with!!!

Treat our enemy countries as friends with friendly talk. Treat working class white people with disrespect. Treat AA who live in govt. housing amd food stamps with more respect than someone working. AA criminals should not be senentenced as harshly as Whites– I could go on and on for reasons not to vote for OBAMA. Rezko, Ayers, Wright, Sinclair, Young, etc.

Fighting for equality for EVERYONE means not remaining silent when bigotry flies from other Obama supporters in the past 6 months. Fighting for equality for EVERYONE means fighting for everyone, not only when it is convenient for Obama supporters. The anti-Obama comments, but not necessarily pro-Hillary statements, are pathetic. (Please note the proper spelling for “qualified”).
All anyone needs to remember is that in 2001, the year Bush II entered office, gas was $1.40 per gallon. And Microsoft, not Walmart, was the No. 1 growth company in the U.S.
Do you want more shrinking wallets? Then vote for McCain, and suffer, as you watch your gas prices jump to $10 per gallon. CHANGE is always a little painful, but it beats walking in worn-out shoes any day. Get serious and Vote Obama!

Stop the Judgements against people in the Democratic Party who are unhappy with obama. Stop trying to berate and guilt trip people who do not support obama.

From Democrat to Independant -
Most Democrats liked both candidates and would happily vote for either as nominee. There have been many polls to verify that. They have very similar policy positions, and are both brilliant and capable people. If you don’t like Obama, don’t vote for him, but please don’t think that you speak for the rest of us.

Samantha I am voting for Obama because I don’t believe in republican policies and therefore would never vote for McCain. For 1 he does not agree with equal pay for women. But I am more concerned with the Supreme Court and the conservative justices that McCain would appoint. You can vote Obama out in 4 years but justices are there for life. So I can’t believe anyone who calls themselves a dem would vote for McCain.

Posted by: J | June 24, 2008, 7:18 pm 7:18 pm

McCain has decades of record for us to examine and frankly, nobody should be surprise if he has regressive views in the past.
Roes V. Wade will never be overturned. It is a non issue and women should stop allowing this to tie them to political candidates. Roe vs Wade in a scare tactic that OB is using to scare women into unify against their better judgment…Whatever. Roe vs Wade is the law of the land and would take more than one term of McCain to over turn.
Where was Obama’s concern for how feminists and HRC was treated in this election? So before you go and show your support ask yourself who is really for Change when it comes to women? I assure you its not from Obama or those who are backing him.
Obama voted present 7 times on women’s issues…how is this a vote for women?

Posted by: Samantha | June 24, 2008, 7:25 pm 7:25 pm

Obama said he is for women’s issues to where McCain is not. Show me where he has any record of anything that he has done as far as women’s issues. Roe V. Wade will not be overturned, that is a non issue and just a scare tactic.

Who said anything about Roe v Wade. And no it is not the law of the land. Who are you to even suggest that. But I am talking about future issues that the Supreme Court will hear. I am not willing to turn the court over to the conservatives for the next 2 decades or so.

Posted by: d | June 24, 2008, 8:11 pm 8:11 pm

Erin,
The scare tactic of Roe v. Wade won’t work. Here is the process for justices to be appointed :
“Under Article II, section 2, clause 2 of the Constitution, the role of the Senate is to provide its advice and consent to a nomination. Key Senators, particularly those on the Senate Judiciary Committee, typically are consulted in advance by the White House about the merits of potential nominees. After a nomination is made, it is assigned to the Judiciary Committee. The Committee holds a public hearing and a subsequent vote is taken to report the nomination to the full Senate. A majority vote of the Senate is required to confirm a nominee.”

Posted by: J | June 24, 2008, 8:12 pm 8:12 pm

J please read my post again. I am NOT talking about Roe v Wade. I am talking about future issues that the justices will hear. There will probably be 2 justices retiring within the next 4 years. And McCain has already said that he wants conservative judges. His first choice may not go through but eventually 1 or even 2 will. The court is pretty much balanced now. With McCain it will definately turn conservative. That’s just a fact.

Posted by: erin | June 24, 2008, 8:25 pm 8:25 pm

Bill Clinton is a true democrat but if I were in his position , I would not endorse a man that called him racist for stating an historical fact…………along with sticking his middle finger up when saying Hillary’s name in a speech and the “oh she’s likable enough” comment and soooo many more sexist and racist things the Obama’s did. I give Bill credit for his commitment to the party. I will vote Republican for the first time in my life this year and any self respecting woman will do the same. What people thought was odd was that he would use an African American as a comparision as if to make a point, well another black man won it but didn’t win the nomination. Sorry, but lots of people saw it like that.

The news media never ceases to amaze me. When President Clinton was speaking out in support of Senator Clinton’s presidential campaign, his every word was analyzed, criticized and rejected as “unhelpful” to her quest and inflammatory toward Obama. He was even accused of racism and the media knew that accusation was unjustified when they made it. Now, he does not speak and he’s criticized for that!
The best thing President Clinton can do for himself, Obama and his campaign is stay as far away from it as possible. To do otherwise is to risk a comment that will be seized upon as detrimental to Obama’s efforts and President Clinton will be accused of attempting to derail the campaign.
The Clinton’s are forever in a “no win” situation with the news media and the best comment either one can make about Obama and his campaign is, “no comment” because the media has an unreasonable hostility toward them.

I think most Hillary supporters know, that this is not right that Hussein Obama will be using Hillary now to win the presidency for him . Hillary Should be the nominee, she had more votes she is the real nominee.

“I’m thrilled that our country has progessed to the point we have an African-American nominee for President.”
…I’m sorry that it isn’t Colin Powell!

John McCain, like Hillary Clinton, voted for the Born Alive Infant Protection Act. John McCain, like Hillary Clinton, opposes decriminalizing marijuana and ending the war on drugs. John McCain, like Hillary Clinton, is a staunch supporter of the death penalty. John Mccain, like Hillary Clinton, believes that a military rather than a diplomatic response is necessary if Israel is attacked with nuclear weapons.
Hillary supported raising the capital gains tax as a means of generating additional revenue for the country. Obama favors raising the capital gains tax–even if it doesn’t raise additional tax revenues–out of a sense of fairness. The rationale behind the policy can be as important if not more important than the policy itself.
I didn’t switch my vote from Hillary Clinton to John McCain because I am an uneducated bigot. I moved to the center to vote for Hillary but I can’t move to the far left to vote for Barack Obama so I have move back to the right instead. It really isn’t that hard of a switch from Hillary to McCain if you are a conservative, blue dog democrat.

i for one could care less about hillary. she is a self-serving narcissist. she cares nothing for the country or the people. she does what she does purely for her own self interestes.
now we have obama asking for people to help pay off her debt of 20+ million dollars (so she can focus on stumping for him. sounds like blackmail from the clinton camp to me). you’ve got to be kidding me.
the more things ‘change’, the more they stay the same.

I am sorry, Just because I am a democrat, doesn’t mean I have to vote for Barak Obama and I refuse to be harassed or scared into it. I do not think Obama has the experience or credentials to be our next president and besides I don’t like him as a man. He is arrogant, dismissive and his demeaning treatment of woman makes me think he has a lot of growing up to do.
I would also like to say that from the beginning It was clear that Nancy Pelosi was against Hillary Clinton, we recognize that Pelosi has her own agenda but woman all over America will not forget her constantly calling for Hillary to get out of the race. Ms. Pelosi you do not speak for me or any of the woman I know, so don’t tell me to get over it.
