From the Fact Check Desk: What Did Obama’s Half-Brother Say About Obama’s Background?

It was a sloppy paraphrase that emerged as false evidence.

Malik Obama, the older half brother of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, gave a brief interview to Israeli Army Radio.

The Jerusalem Post listened to the interview, apparently, and produced a story saying "Malik Obama says his brother will be good president for the Jews. Barack Obama’s half brother Malik said Thursday that if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background."

Nowhere is Malik quoted.

The Jerusalem Post has since taken the story down of its website, but you can see a cached version HERE.

Conservatives jumped on the Jerusalem Post’s paraphrase that Malik said Obama "will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background" as some sort of evidence that Malik was saying Obama was raised a Muslim, which the campaign says he was not.

This suspicion reared its head in Israeli blogs and the blogs of supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, and Sean Hannity fan sites and Free Republic and conservative blogs.

It ended up on Fox News, with anchor Brut Hume saying on June 16 that: "Barack Obama is a practicing Christian, married in a Christian church, whose children were also baptized in that church. His campaign has emphasized his faith in part to dispel what the campaign calls an online smear campaign which contends among other things that Obama was raised a Muslim. There is even a statement on his official campaign website reading, quote, ‘Obama has never been a Muslim, and is a committed Christian.’ But Obama’s half brother is not so sure. Malik Obama tells The Jerusalem Post that, ‘if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background.’"

So is it true?

No.

**

ABC News got a hold of the audio of Malik’s interview with Israel Army Radio, and Malik said nothing of the kind.

You can’t hear the questions — only Malik’s answers (listen HERE) — but whatever the interviewer asked about Obama’s father’s Muslim heritage, or the Muslim minority in Kenya, Malik said, “I don’t think that’s in any way going to be something to worry about. I myself am not speaking for him. But we are here, we love people in general. People love us. I myself love people who love me. You know, so, and I think it’s mutual. I can’t go in terms of Israel and Kenya and America, and so forth, you know, but based on what else I’ve heard him say and what I know of him as an individual, I don’t think Israel should worry too much, you know, about the connection. Because, I am a Muslim myself, and I don’t think that my being a Muslim has got anything to do with my brother being the President of the United States.”

It may be that the Israeli Army Radio interviewer asked about Obama having a "Muslim background." But even if the interviewer did, Malik did not say that or come close to saying that.

It could be that the interviewer used the phrase, and Malik interpreted that in a way that squares with the Obama campaign’s story — that Obama’s father was a largely secular man born Muslim.  We don’t know.

But nowhere in there does Malik expressly say anything about Obama having a Muslim background.

And nowhere does he "confirm" anything about Obama having a Muslim background.

Malik refers to Obama having a "connection" to something, perhaps Islam, which could clearly be a reference to Obama’s father.

This interpretation spreading throughout the blogosphere and cable news is just not supported by the facts. The paraphrase was sloppy, for such a sensitive subject, and Malik’s quotes don’t even come close to supporting any assertion that Obama himself has a Muslim background.

**

In Obama’s book Dreams of My Father, interestingly enough, he writes about meeting Malik as an adult: “I checked into the cheapest room I could find and waited. At nine, I heard a knock. When I opened the door, I found a big man standing there with his hands in his pockets, an even-toothed grin breaking across his ebony face. ‘Hey, brother,’ he said. ‘How’s life?’ In the pictures I had of Roy, he was slender, dressed in African print, with an Afro, a goatee, a mustache. The man who embraced me now was much heavier, over two hundred pounds, I guessed, the flesh on his cheeks pressing out beneath a thick pair of glasses. The goatee was gone; the African shirt had been replaced by a gray sports coat, white shirt, and tie. Auma had been right, though; his resemblance to the Old Man was unnerving. Looking at my brother, I felt as if I were ten years old again.”

It was later that Malik converted to Islam, Obama wrote in Dreams: “The person who made me proudest of all, though, was Roy. Actually, now we call him Abongo, his Luo name, for two years ago he decided to reassert his African heritage. He converted to Islam, and has sworn off pork and tobacco and alcohol. He still works at his accounting firm, but talks about moving back to Kenya once he has enough money.”

In the Israeli Army Radio interview Malik said that Obama was the "best man at my wedding and I was best man at his wedding."

And in my favorite part of the interview, Malik said, "I think he’ll be a good president as long as all of this, you know, doesn’t go to his head."

Mark Twain is said to have quipped, "A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes."

And that was before the internet. And cable.

This comes to show the Republican fear brand. You can’t beat him on the issues so “lets demonize him”.
It won’t work. To many Americans are hurting in their pockets… the last thing they care of is someones false characteristic traits. They care of whom will give them relief and is right for America.

First and foremost, Barack is not a muslim. Second (and more importantly), this entire subject says something more ominous about human beings , in general, and OUR faults. Simply put…if Barack was a practicing Muslim (which he is not), would that somehow make him evil or the Devil?
Perhaps the mirror needs to be turned towards US to question why a person’s chosen religion makes US prejudiced towards them. Perhaps the evil is, in fact, in the mirror.

Obama’s military adviser Gen. Tony McPeak response whe asked; Is Iraq the last country we confront in the Middle East?
Response: Who wants to volunteer to get cross-ways with us? We’ll be there a century, hopefully. If it works right.
Isn’t this the exact argument McCain has made repeatedly, and which Obama derides as “a hundred-years war”? Of course it is.
This should raise some eyebrows on the Obama campaign’s willful deception on this point. Didn’t McPeak bother to explain to Obama the exact same reasoning he had in March 2003, at the start of the war? Did Obama not bother to listen? Or did Obama just decide to demagogue on McCain’s point while gaining credibility by associating himself with a military adviser that publicly endorsed the exact policy as McCain?

I do not believe that Obama is a Muslim, but the whole premise of this argument is highly divisive in a country that is supposed to embrace diversity. The premise assumes that being a Muslim is a bad thing, and from Muslim doctrine we can tell that this is simply not true. To every news outlet who casts Muslim’s in this light… shame on you. Being a religionist is no better than being a racist.

Blake – Since you are Muslim and truthfully I know nothing about this religion or doctrine, but you would be a good person to ask. Assuming that Obama was born and his parents never had any ceremonies like baptism or whatever and he grew up to adulthood without committing to any religion and then choose the Christian religion, I would think there would be no problem. I’ve heard and maybe this is not correct either but because his father was a Muslim he is considered a Muslim by birth right? Maybe no truth to this either. Thanks for your answers.

It’s not as if ANY of the politicians in Washington are making decisions based solely on their faith – nor should they!
The President is supposed to make decisions based on what is best for the nation – and that’s ALL of us – not simply based on their religious affiliation.
I don’t see Obama or McCain as being super-devout anything. As far as I’m concerned, that’s just fine. They’re politicians, not preachers.

Even if Obama’s brother said “Muslim background,” why is that so damning? Why the hysteria? Obama does have a Muslim “background.” And, that does not mean he was a confirmed or practicing Muslim. His father and step father were both Muslims. While in Indonesia (a Muslim Country for the most part), he was registered at two schools as a Muslim, whether or not he ever practiced the religion. He seems familiar with tenets of the faith. For all intents and purposes, Obama does have a Muslim background.
It is not a disease and should not be treated as such. To do so is to insult people of that faith.
While I am no Obama supporter, I actually saw his familiarity with the Muslim religion and culture as a positive, given our current conflicts.

What is a Muslim and what is a Muslim Extremist? Is there a difference?
What does a terrorist look like?
What religion does a terrorist practice?
What does religion have to do with the White House?
How many people only go to church on Easter, Christmas, and when they get married?
What does it matter? Why does it matter?
People, the media is trying to confuse you into thinking that these are the things that matter. They ultimately do not, because the religion of any candidate has nothing to do with the price of gas, your economy, your layoff, your foreclosure, your children being sent to fight for oil…

comicrief- i agreed. why not just say he was and converted to Christian?? that will be done with the story. It doesn’t matter what obama claimed to bee, it’s stupid for anyone to think that he was never a Muslim when both of his fathers were muslim, his mom is atheist and he spend most of his childhood in a Muslim country. His mom married both Muslim men and even moved out of the country for them so obviously she’s not against Muslim and also submissive. what makes anyone think that his mom or obama just choose christian faith. I have no doubt he’s a christian now but it’s an obvious lie to tell people that he was never a muslim.

I am totally not interested in obama’s childhood links to Islam…I am horrified at his adult decision to follow the Black Liberation Theology teachings of Wright, Cone, and Farrakhan. The BLT is an angry philospohy that lends itself to the validation of Black victimization and White guilt. It is the campaign tactics of race baiting and demonization of the Clintons (including from behind the pulpit). This is an adult decision that must be based in part on the political and religious beliefs of Obama.

“Calling this assertion a falsehood is in itself a falsehood.”
Nooo: like much Obama-boosting in the media, it doesn’t quite rise to the level of “falsehood”. What THIS is, is a stretch (“fancy writing” and nicely done, too).
Those “clinging” fools in the non-”black” underclasses probably don’t turn a hair at the FACT of the One’s cultural upbringing — that his anthro-addled mommy sought out TWO Muslim “husbands” (of whom the first — Obama’s sire, if not quite his father — already was married to someone else) isn’t, after all, The One’s fault.
It’s the Bible-boasting and lying (and the fancy writing that conveys it all to the voting masses) that might make ANYone sit out the election, or whatever, rather than become complicit in this “Democratic” fraud.

CTJD Well said! But I’m just wondering about something. Let see. Is he an only child from the white woman? then if I understand it right his mother got married what, once or twice? and his father also? right, so how many sets of sisters and brothers has ge got and from how many countries? and how many religions? are there any christians in his family besides michele and his kids? I understand that he said his grand father convertible I mean converted to christianity to keep his job with the Brithish colonists but never practiced it, or his son would not have named his son barraakk Hussien? right.I don’t know I should think he would name him something like I don’t know James Earl Jones or Bill Cosby. or Spencer or Tracy.
Can you imagine a reading of a will in this family? it would have to be read at the United Nations. Maybe that’s what we should call the White House as a matter of fact. That would make Obama happy and he’s stop whinning maybe.

Somewhere in the constitution, I believe it says that there shall be no religious test applied to determine eligibility for the presidency.
How many times do we have to learn the same lesson over and over again? It is immoral to discriminate against Jews, immoral to discriminate against blacks, immoral to discriminate against Japanese, immoral to discriminate against Muslims….immoral, in fact, do discriminate against any of God’s children based on their appearance or abilities, or what form they worship God in (or not).
I’m sure when the next new minority comes along, the same lesson will need to be learned all over again. Bah.

I would certainly support a person of Mormon or Baptist or whatever faith or no faith at all – I don’t apply a “religious test” – I think it is irrelevant. The only relevant thing for me personally is whether I believe they would serve well in office and whether I can live with their policies.

“why not just say he was and converted to Christian?? that will be done with the story.”
Because to convert to another religion from Islam means to be put under a death sentence.

It’s just more of the right wing’s fear and smear campaign. They can’t win any other way.
Does the right have a positive vision for the US or is it just more war and tax cuts for the rich. All paid for by charging it to the Bank of China?

comicrelief:
1. Barack Hussein Obama is a Junior: His Dad was Barack Hussein Obama. So, get this: HE WAS GIVEN HIS DAD’S NAME! OMG!!!! Hussein, btw, was his grand father’s given name. Barack Hussein Obama the First was an Atheist (according to Obama himself).
2. He was NEVER a Muslim. His mother was Christian, and his Dad was pretty much an agnostic. BUT, and this is important, his Dad left when he was 2. I wonder if you were a confirmed Christian at age 2??
3. He was raised in a non-religious family. Although he spent time in Indonesia, he went to Catholic school (not a muslim school, as the right loves to imply). He “converted” to Christianity, as he himself says quite clearly and often, as an adult.
Please stop these idiotic rumors.

Obama attended a Catholic school but identified as a Muslim in the paperwork. Who cares except that he, himself, is trying to distance himself from the Muslim thing.

Lefties, it’s your turn to check some facts and not rely on the Obamessiah loving mainstream media. Do some homework on the holier than thou one, the one who wants to lecture us about race, religion, foreign diplomacy, and wants us to pay higher gas prices.

Posted by: Patricia | June 18, 2008, 5:43 pm 5:43 pm

Democrat congress has driven the price of gas up $1.50 since taking over.

For all the people judging Obama based on short snippets of inflammatory statements made by others, you are doing yourselves and your country a huge disservice. American democracy deserves better than citizens who make decisions out of ignorance and fear.
This election is about our economy, our national security, our health care system, our environment, our energy independence, our Constitution, and our educational system. It’s not about your personal prejudices. Get over it.

These constant and absurd smear tactics against Obama are backfiring on the Republicans now. No one can believe anything the Republicans say now and they have lost all credibility. We’ve already endurred 7 years of lies and deception with Bush in the White House. America won’t tolerate more of the same.

Posted by: AnnFurthermore | June 18, 2008, 6:54 pm 6:54 pm

Thanks for links Jake, tho people who want to smear Obama don’t care about the truth, others with more open minds do and it’s great to have the source directly online.
Since Obama was never Muslim, only had a Muslim step-dad, the point is moot, people need to grow up now. What I find fascinating is that Hillary-supporting blogs should spread this garbage, when Hillary’s funders are demanding that Barack pay her debts before they’ll donate to him. Obama had to stop campaigning when he’d already won and she kept going, just to not waste money by encouraging her to spend more. Winners always help losers pay their debts. How much they run it up after they lose reflects on them.
Bad, bad sportsmanship, and how any Clinton-supporter can undermine Hillary’s efforts to reunite the party by promoting the lies about Michelle and Barack is beyond me. I’m glad the vast majority of her supporters are cool, and these are just fringe elements, getting way too much attention.

The damage was already done by Obama’s shifting degrees of stern disapproval at his own church and spiritual guides. He has indicated his embarrassment with his connection to Wright, Pfleger, Muslims, black liberation theology, earlier foreign policy declarations, and much else besides. If anyone thinks Obama is not damaged by all that, I encourage you to go right along with that sentiment.

I can hardly wait for the smirking non-apology from Brit Hume, followed by Sean Hannity’s substitution of a different smear for this one.

I’m tired of this whole thing.
He said ” Never” people said” ever”
Shouldn’t the DNC check on him first before they select him?
Should he take a LIE DETECTOR?

You can look at his face (Obama) when he lies. Sure enough, he’s lying to all American. I’m democrat but I’ll not go vote this time.

i don’t have anything productive to add to this discussion, since clearly most of the people commenting here are incredibly paranoid. i think most people will find that the level of ignorance on this board is incredible. the internet has provided a wealth of information for people to check claims, but as many of these comments suggest it’s also provided a lot of convenient misinformation.

ABC offering good information for a change. I think that’s great!
Obama 08!

It doesn’t matter if Obama is Muslim or not. This country has not moved that far ahead from Jim Crowe and slavery. The majority of the American public is still racist, sexist, and homophobic. I think the worst fact about the American public is that they are dumb, which more than anything else will be their downfall

Posted by: bob | June 19, 2008, 1:05 pm 1:05 pm

So many horrible comments in this thread. What has become of this country ? So much hatred. So many people believing lies.
Barack is a Cristian. He has never been a Muslim. If he had been a Muslim he would have said so, there is no shame in that. He is an honest person. He has never been shown to lie about anything. He is smart and eloquent and I agree with most of his politics. He is not a “elitist” – that is a word label that makes no sense, a word that has dropped out of the sky. If you don’t want to vote for him, fine, that is your right. But treat him with the same respect you would treat any other person including McCain.

Posted by: Rick | June 19, 2008, 1:46 pm 1:46 pm

Why would anyone characterize questioning and doubts with hatred? If Obama would quit lying about everything, then people would not be so concerned. The guy just can’t quit lying. He has to assuage his way, way left base and now he is trying to gather some middle ground. He’s a charlatan, a scammer.

Slag, I take offense when the possible future President of the USA sits in a church that subscribes to black liberation theology. BLT teaches that white people are the cause of all the misery on the planet. James Cone, the founder of BLT, says that white people need to be eliminated. Now, if Mr. Obama is so lazy that he did not know what his own church is founded upon, this is incredible. If he did know, then he should not have stayed in that church. It is not true Christianity.

Posted by: Patricia | June 19, 2008, 5:25 pm 5:25 pm

He is a Muslim, he is not a Muslim, he is a Catholic, he is a Marxist he is not Marxist. He is more black no he is more white, What does it matter!
We elected Shrub, a Fool, who can’t even construct a simple sentence, who almost single handled consigned the once great US to the dark ages. The Economy has tanked, House prices fallen, Sub prime, Petrol prices, Iraq war, possible Iran war etc.
We are treated with scorn and derision by the rest of the World. Even Mickey Mouse would made a better President. Obama is no Mickey Mouse he is strong, articulate, educated and his background allows him a first row seat to what ails the US and its people.
Obama offers a chance to hope again dream again, purge the stench of Bush from our consciousness and to hold our heads up once with pride.

I don’t know why so many people are freakin’ out about whether or not Obama is Muslim or not. There is supposed to be NO RELIGIOUS TEST for office.
We are doing an end run around the Constitution. It sucks that we embrace some sections and ignore others.
It is one thing to disregard it because you don’t like what protections the campaign affords, but the biggest hypocritical thing the right and the left does is ignore certain sections and then claim the moral high ground.

He running for President…he will be or not be whatever, to whomever he is addressing!
IMO…he can’t be trusted to tell the truth, and has no experience.
He’s another Jimmy Carter…and if you are old enough to remember the Carter years..you do not want to go through that again.

Posted by: Justin | June 20, 2008, 8:50 am 8:50 am

Odd how critics explain how Obama says whatever it takes to get elected when he is a lot more straight forward than the Flip-Flop Express. Odd how they claim not enough is known about Obama, but claim he’s identical in politics with Jimmy Carter. And has a website that tells you exactly where he stands on IMPORTANT issues.
All Republicans can do to avoid the inevitable landslide is smear Obama, and his wife. They CANNOT win on the issues. Good riddance to McSame.

Not only did Malik NOT say Obama had a Muslim background–but they were not raised together and did not even MEET until both were well into adulthood. It’s not as if Malik were an authority on Barack’s upbringing even if he had said such a thing, which, of course, he didn’t. But the absurdity of the whole flap is stunning.

I am getting sick and tire of candidates having to pass the Israel protection quiz in order to be the president of “OUR” country, or agree to join the republicans in their policies in order to please them.
Bush and everyone of our elected official has bankrupt our citizens and country in order to give Israel our tax money , military equipment and fight wars to please them.
I don’t see any of these candidates coming in front of the democratic groups to see what policies they wish in order to receive our votes. But in fact kisses the republican’s a…es by passing legislation which censored democratic groups.
Matter of fact they take our vote for granted and arrogantly believe we will vote for them no matter how they s… on us.
I believe this government is intentionally destroying our jobs , manufacturing plants , constitution , freedom , rights , democracy , social programs and military by replacing it with their private army in order to take complete control of our citizens and our country.

It doesn’t matter how you people try to spin it. The guy is no good. The only thing he has going for him the ability to deliver a speech. It scares me how many people out there that will just believe anything there told with out doing a little research. Your right it shouldn’t matter what his faith is
except for the fact that a certain group of muslim have declared war against us!!!!!
HELLO!!!!! And to all those people out there that think one person controls the rise and fall of the American economy your just as crazy as Obama
