Hecklers Butt In as McCain Addresses Latino Group

ABC News’ Bret Hovell and Jennifer Duck report: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was interrupted repeatedly by hecklers as he and his likely Democratic presidential opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., separately addressed the National Association of Latino Elected Officials Saturday, at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C.

McCain was interrupted four times by protestors, three of whom were identifiable as CodePink members. Four separate interruptions (as opposed to the number of people protesting, which can vary) may tie a record for recent McCain events. In Denver in late May, McCain was interrupted four times during a foreign policy speech.

One of the protestors spoke in Spanish, then translated as she was getting hauled out of the room: "Your silence is consent to war crimes," she shouted at the crowd, which booed her.

Three of the protestors were women, one was a man.

Of the first protestor, a woman from Code Pink who frequents most of McCain’s stops in Washington, McCain quipped, "That’s a very familiar voice to me."

The woman was protesting the Iraq war, saying that she wanted a "peace candidate."

McCain also used the line he regularly does when interrupted by a protestor.

"The one thing Americans want us to stop doing is yelling at each other," McCain said.

Late in his remarks, a man stood up from what looked to be a part of the press section and shouted at McCain about the war. McCain barely broke stride, continuing to talk as the man was escorted out.

Generally, the crowd was very receptive to McCain’s remarks, which touched on many of the aspects of his stump speech and included a heavy dose of his opinions on illegal immigration.

"We must prove to them that we can and will secure our borders first," McCain said, speaking about those who opposed his comprehensive immigration plan, "while respecting the dignity and rights of citizens and legal residents of the United States."

The crowd was particularly supportive whenever McCain was interrupted, several times cheering after a protestor was pulled from the room.

Before Obama took stage later in the morning, a NALEO official apologized for the protesters, noting they were not a part of NALEO and didn’t represent NALEO.

Protestors at a McCain events are not uncommon; many people are opposed to McCain’s position on the war in Iraq. Especially in Washington, the likelihood of someone interrupting McCain is about as good as the likelihood of McCain addressing his audience with his signature appellation, "my friends."

Mccain has to work on his delivery. Look at Obama saying the same thing as Mccain. What is the diference? Delivery.
He delivered the same message but with a better delivery. No wonder Mccain prefers town halls

Get your protests in now, because if McCain becomes president , he will carry on in the Republican tradition of not allowing any dissent within his hearing. Anyone who disagrees with him will be corralled in a “free speech” area, far from his presence. That is Anti-American and that is the Republican way.

I love these protesters. Keep up the good work. Bomb, bomb Iran McCain is getting some “blowback” for his reckless belligerent arrogance.

Code Pink are Obama fundraisers. They have been overheard saying they will send protestors to interrupt every McCain speech until election day.

“Anyone who disagrees with him will be corralled in a “free speech” area, far from his presence. That is Anti-American and that is the Republican way” Wow, what a bunch of liars and liberal extremists who want to slander and silence opposing candidates. Hypocrites! Those very oppressive tactics by liberal extremists are as heinous as the oppressives tactics they accuse of others.

McCain deserves it. But since when have politicians respected any free speech except those of their corporate multinational masters.

The right to free speach is part of America, protestors are not intended to interrupt but protest an event outside. If these protestors are for Obama, then why doesn’t he ask them to have dignity. McCain has the right to speak his beliefs, as does the competition. I agree w/a citizen we need Civilty to remain and exist.

McFlip-Flop is genuinely confused and he a very long way to go with voters, because America is tired of fearmongers and warmongers like McSame. America needs peace and prosperity, the world is ready for America’s leadership under Obama’s visionary guidance. God save America from McFlip-Flop. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

What a bafoon. Typical politician: the people speak and he just ignores them. The people are removed so they can’t disrupt the status quo. The status quo that McCain hopes will get him in the white house. We can’t have the people of this country voicing thier opinion and interrupting so he can’t deliver his prewritten speech that someone else wrote for him to try and appease the sheeple.

chris – The only war that has ever been on American soil was our own: the civil war. We as a country are probably the best protected country in the world: we have an ocean on each side and allies to the north and south. The only time we’ve ever even been attacked was WWII and the best they could do was one base in Hawaii. 9/11 I suppose counts as an attack but again it was done from the inside. Every war we’ve ever fought except WWII was a war we chose to join, not because we were defending our country. Simply because the politician’s decided for political purposes to make an offensive military move not a defensive one. They use peopole like you to defend their military-industrial complex and it works.
a citizen – make an informed decision? Doesn’t that assume that you can trust what the speaker is saying? That he won’t say one thing today and another tomorrow? I think that time has passed for McCain AND Obama.

Last february, I was at a large gathering for John McCain. A supporter yelled a good thing, and I repeated it. I was crushed by the size of the group and could not show my support independently. I was drawn into what happened. I also was a little embarresed because I did not sound to could. Next time, I woun’t give a scratcy yell, but I will at least wear a John McCain hat and shirt. I’ll wave the hat. During the event, if anyone talks to me I will share what I know about John. Did you know that John decided not to take an admiralship. John wanted to become more involved with the US government.

Wake up America…..McCain is the only one who really care for this Country and the people in it..Obama only cares about his political career and he doesn’t care who he has to walk on or lie to or cheat in order to get to the top..Wake up America.

McCain is just all over the place. He opposes illigal immigration when addressing red necks. He supports Illigal Immigration when he addresses Latinos. Voters look for firm stand on issues.

Posted by: tom | June 28, 2008, 1:39 pm 1:39 pm

Protesters have the right to be heard. Let them say what they got to say and move on. McCain can then respond to their statements. That would be the civil thing to do. Unfortunately McCain is used to having handpicked audience asking questions that bolster his position. He is ill equipped to answer difficult questions particularly those about the war.

Posted by: worldsam | June 28, 2008, 1:40 pm 1:40 pm

ANGIE, McCain challenged Obama to a series of debates and Obama has ignored them. Obama WILL NEVER debate unless he knows the questions in advance and someone can write up answers for him. I swear, there’s a quota of “Change” in every answer. The guy is sooooo fake.
McCain ’08

Ryan, I am so impressed with your comment to Angie… You are so right about Obama…I remember all the debates with Hillary, he couldn’t even answer any issue unless Hillary went first and then his favorite thing to say was “I agree with Senator Clenton”
How in the world could the American people be so stupid as to want this idiot to be our president…

Posted by: glenda | June 28, 2008, 1:44 pm 1:44 pm

tom, not true, McCain has always been for some form of comprehensive immigration reform. However, McCain is willing to listen to the people who are against comprehensive immigration reform and shore up the the border before going forward with another plan for comprehensive immigration reform.

Civility is dead.
Remember when people were taking potshots at Bush during Coretta Scott King’s funeral? No one praised Bush for being respectful but there was plenty of MSM praise for those who “exercised their right to free speech.”
Then there’s the boorish behavior that has become commonplace in the U.S. Capitol. People have developed a sort of talk show mentality – why bother formulating an intelligent argument when all you have to do is drown out your opponent with noise?

Posted by: Ed | June 28, 2008, 1:47 pm 1:47 pm

Nothing wrong with war…when it’s waged intelligently and with good reason…and there’s an exit strategy that will avoid a quagmire afterwards.
Unfortunately. Iraq is not one of those kind of wars.
Blunder after blunder after blunder…after incompetence, lies, embezzlement and corruption.
Bush Junior – wearing that ridiculous flightsuit – declared “Mission Accomplished” ONE-THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED and EIGHT NINE DAYS AGO.
So…why are we still there…wasting BILLIONS of American taxpayer dollars each month…and losing more American lives?
Must be because – quoting the Bush Junior administration before the war – “Iraqi oil will pay for the war”.

Posted by: wilder5121 | June 28, 2008, 1:50 pm 1:50 pm

Recent polls suggest that only 19 percent of likely voters say that Iraq is an issue for them. Protesters just making noise.

Posted by: nando | June 28, 2008, 2:14 pm 2:14 pm

Neither of these presidentual candidates offer any right now solutions to any problem we face here in the states.
We need a candidate that wants to solve the problems here at home before solving the problems of the world.
I am not interested in freedom for other countries such as Iraq when my freedoms are being stolen from me here at home.
I am not intrested 20 years from now, I am interested in the here an now, because if we don’t deal with these issues now 20 years from now who cares.
You don’t make things better in the world by making things worse here in the US.
You don’t make things better for americans by eleminatating jobs in this country.
Even the village idiot knows that the price of gas is killing the economy, and if not brought back down there will be no economy.
The war in Iraq is a being used as a distraction from the issues here at home that neither party want to deal with.

Hey , connect the dots. These disruptive tactics — trying to shut down free speech — are the same as those used by the community organizers that Senator Obama worked with (ACORN). Attempts to shut down speech and the press are surging from the left. It’s called disinformation and it’s an old revolutionary tactic. It’s not Republicans who are trying to muzzle people. They know their ideas are good enough to take a beating.

In reading posts, I guess people don’t realize how it is when you are put in the position where you should support the President as the Commander-in- Chief. I assume if all of your intelligence agencies present facts to support a war, then you think of first protecting the citizens of your country, particularly after 911. Then, as a member of Congress, you may stand behind the President’s decision as the one the country chose to decide just what to do. Hindsight is a valuable tool. Suppose you felt that evidence pointed to your home being terriorized. Would your family members stand by your decision to protect it? Put yourselves in the position of those who voted for the war and not those like Obama with hindsight. At the time of 911 the country was in desperate need to find someone to blame to move the hurt away. Hussein happened to pose such a threat. Think about it. What would anyone of the protesters have done including Obama. Of course it is easy to capitalize upon someones mistake in the past.
McCain, I trust with issues of war. He will certainly not cause any more unnecessary pain as he has two sons in the military. Let us not forget that my family members who joined the military expected that fighting is a part of military service for whatever the reason. They know that they are there to protect our country. They are not there to sit and do nothing. Unfortunately, on any job there is a risk of casualty. Obama sounds great but he really is capitalizing upon the current events. He sells newspapers and captures media time for now. Let us take the negative energy towards the war and direct the anger elsewhere. We all know the pain and suffering of any death no matter what causes it. I am a Hillary supporter because I moved past her voting for the war to the realities of what she had to face at the time of her decision. Obama’s Chicago needs him so much now because of how crime and violence is there. He promised his electorate to stand by them. If the country is in such bad shape, why in the world would you entrust it to such an inexperienced person? Obama needs to take the time to learn more. He cannot simply rely on others while using the Presidency as an internship. We need to go back and really see how much he changes with the tide, cahnges with the wind and speaks to the audience at hand.
Of course he needs Hillary because she is probably one of the most intelligent women alive today. He must earn the office on his own merits. We must stop and realize what is at stake. We as the public are just as emotional as he is. I have realized almost from the beginning that it is not that America is not ready for a Black president. It is now we do not in all sincerity have a Black man who is fully equipped to be president no matter how the people and the media dress it up. McCain is calm and cool. Leaders nedd to be calm and cool, not all fired up all the time as with the case of Obama. As a Black in America, I will not be swayed by anyone to put my life and well-being in Obama’s hands. I cannot afford to take that risk. I see his primary crowds that he plays to and whose hands he always seem to shake most of the time.
He just seems to want to be president for reasons he seems not to know why. Just an opportunity whose time has come.
He really knows what change is, it is Obama himself all the time for whatever the need. It is so sad.

It seems to me that Cindy McCain’s problems with prescription painkillers were also in the past, as were Obama’s, and all of the other recreational, experimental drug users you refer to.
If one’s past is indeed their past, then so is the other’s.
And I can’t remember the last time I saw a “trainwreck” spend their free time in Vietnam or some other third world country ensuring that underpriveleged children born with extreme facial abnormalities and deformities received the relatively inexpensive (by our standards anyway)medical attention they needed in order to live a normal life.
Those children are the ones who deserve your sympathy, not the woman who works to help them.

Those Obama people who want to change the ‘status quo’ from a democratic nation to a true socialist nation are sure causing a lot of headaches. And the Obama campaign is fully behind eliminating anyone or group that does not agree with their policies. Obama thinks to tell the truth about him is “AN ATTACK”. He seems to be trying to dictate what the public can say or do. That is the CHANGE HE ENVISIONS.

I truly believe that the hate bloggers on this site are not representative of most America. That there are people who say that heckling and interrupting anyone’s prepared speech is the right thing to do. It is just reprehensible. I have to think that even Obama would believe that this kind of thinking is counter productive to his campaign.

I supposed the only way to settle the argument RATIONALLY is to actually Count the number of pro/con news items. But, probably neither of us has that info readily available. Should not be hard to find though, there are research firms who keep track of those sorts of things. Karl, The latest economic outlook from the Bank of Ireland is an estimated 3.5% growth rate in 2008 and a 4% growth rate in 2009 and the consensus was that Ireland’s economic outlook looked just fine so I do not know who you were talking to as you did not reference anyone. As to Ireland’s socialistic health care system and the negative view of the people of Ireland towards it, as usual, socialists, like you and Obama could care less about what the people think as you think you know best and to hell with what the people think.

These vocalizing demonstrators really think they’re something. In fact, they’re just all running around cackling and shouting like a colony of ants on a log floating aimlessly down the Potomac, turn here! Turn there! Ahoy, stop! Full speed ahead! Myself and others have actually tried to spur debate here by bringing up issues related to economics, war on terrorism, immigration, etc. Mostly, we get only colorful adjectives by the Obama bloggers in return. Probably why the libs want to shut down political talk radio – they can’t compete with the conservatives there either. Like Obama – not capable of much in-deph analysis of issues.

It all comes down to whether or not you think we should continue the bush policies. If you think the war should continue indefinitely, while we spend $10,000,000,000 a month, and you think that bush has done well with the economy then mc-more-war is your man. If you think that it’s time we start to get out of iraq and do some positive things for the average American instead of just the top 5% then vote for Obama.

While the Senate voted on June 26, 2008 for the 21st Century GI Bill of Rights, John McCain was absent…not participating in a extremely meaningful vote. You see, the 21st Century GI Bill of Rights, gives full scholorships to US servicemembers who complete 3 years of active service after September 11, 2001. John McCain offered a counter bill, and when his was not the bill of choice by the Senate…a 75-22 vote, he simply did not show up!!! Is that what you’d expet from a “war hero”??? They say “Nero fiddled while Rome burned”, since he was likely responsible for setting the blaze in the first place. Although that particular anecdote may not be historically accurate, it did lead to the phrase of “fiddling around” as being ineffectual or distracted. These days, the average American prefers to fiddle while our nation burns its constitution, Bill of Rights, and Habeus Corpus. They pay much more attention to what our favorite sports or entertainment figure is up to than our corrupt elected officials. What will come from Obama’s Administration is hopefully the realization of the fact that liberals and conservatives both have a love for their home. What unites us is far more powerful than what divides us.
There should be this understanding within the Republican party as well as the Democratic…Not all in either party are equal in terms of their individual truths…But reasoning should tell us that they are there…And I for one am a believer that Mr. Obama is closer to a simple man than many who surround him. That he wasn’t treated as he should have been many times in his young adult life. That he may have even been called the worst possible things one man can inflict on another’s character. I doubt he is going to change everything but lets trust that some good will come out of this most extraordinary persons time in office.
If you think that John McCain is the right guy…Then just remember that he is now fully entrenched with the Bush and Cheney Administration. Responsible for seriously ripping of this country over the last 30 years. Please keep the image of Bush and McCain hugging at that rally fresh in your minds when you cast your ballot and ask yourselves if we can trust a man who willfully joined sides with this countries worst president since its foundation. That figure is absolutely based on records kept by the government itself. Please vote for Obama in November and do all the needed research to get you to this healthy decision.

annoyingrabbit,
That is utter babble. The point of the “surge” was to give the Iraqi government time to: 1)reach political reconciliation, 2)train Iraqi troops to fight. Their government is in shamble, aligning itself with Iran, and their troops half-heartedly show up on a daily basis. I’m an Active duty, 18 yrs/3 days, 3 time COMBAT veteran of Iraq, United States Marine. Iraq is absolutely worse than it was 5 years ago. The “5 weeks, 5 months, but certainly not 5 years” Neo-con war has been a disaster. The war is DEFINITELY a voting issue. Especilly when John McCain’s whole claim is I’ll make this country safe. I’m not an Anti-War nut. I’ve gone to combat three times…who about you!!! When was the last time you visited a war-zone? Me, April 3, 2007.

This is a little off topic, but I was just thinking…Obama chooses former general Wesley Clark as his VP. There you’ve added military experience of the highest level to the ticket. Much more relevant and current military experience than McCain’s. And then offer Hillary Clinton the role of Secretary of State. A position with more responsibilities than VP and still technically in line to be president. The Clintons are beloved around the world and Hillary would really get a chance to prove her metal as the highest representative of the US short of the president. I would vote for this ticket without hesitation.

McCain’s own flip-flop on public financing in the GOP primary has been largely buried or ignored in media coverage, even though it is far more serious–including potentially legally–than Obama’s symbolic “broken pledge.”
On two occasions, in November 2007 and December 2007, the McCain campaign received favorable loans from a Bethesda bank, totaling $4 million, by promising to use federal matching funds as collateral. Accepting public funding in the primary would’ve given the cash strapped McCain campaign an infusion of money but limited how much it could spend until the GOP convention in early September. Instead, after winning the New Hampshire primary, McCain opted against seeking public funding, realizing he could raise enough money on his own to sustain the campaign. It was certainly a politically expedient flip-flop. The question now is: are there legal ramifications?
In order to receive matching funds, John McCain signed a binding agreement with the FEC to accept spending limits and to abide by the conditions of receiving those funds. The FEC requires that any request to withdraw from the agreement must be granted by the FEC. FEC Chairman David Mason made this clear in a letter to McCain advising him that the law requires the FEC to approve his request to withdraw from his contract – a move McCain ignored and cost Mason his job.
After writing the letter to McCain, Mason was not re-appointed to the FEC by President Bush. Said Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer: “The only apparent reason for President Bush to drop Commissioner David Mason at this stage, an FEC candidate he had twice proposed for the Commission, is to prevent him from casting an adverse vote against Senator McCain.”
When will the media outlets and reform experts who slammed Obama for his alleged hypocrisy start scrutinizing McCain?

Posted by: BruhMan | June 29, 2008, 7:04 pm 7:04 pm

Offshore Drilling:
McCain used to be a staunch opponent of offshore drilling. Here is what a questionnaire from the Sustainable Energy Coalition said about his position on offshore drilling, “Senator John McCain, who criticized the Clinton Administration for its decision to extend 36 offshore oil leaves along the central California coast over the objections of that state’s Governor and Attorney General, has promised to never lose sight of the fundamental principle that federal land management decisions affecting local communities must be made in cooperation with the Americans who call those communities home.”
McCain 2008:
“We have proven oil reserves of at least 21 billion barrels in the United States. But a broad federal moratorium stands in the way of energy exploration and production. And I believe it is time for the federal government to lift these restrictions and to put our own reserves to use.”
When will the media outlets and reform experts who slammed Obama for his alleged hypocrisy start scrutinizing McCain?

LOL people are tired of the same old politicicans delivering the same old messages. McBush is very boring to watch him speak. He needs to rest he is too old for all this traveling and the stress of trying to run a country. He would make a terrible president and world leaders would not cooperate with his same old agenda. On the other hand Obama will reach out and be received well because of his charismatic personality. vote for Obama for president of the USA in November 2008.

The Bush Tax Cuts: McCain was one of only two Senate Republicans to vote against the Bush tax cuts in 2001. “I am disappointed that the Senate Finance Committee preferred instead to cut the top tax rate of 39.6% to 36%, thereby granting generous tax relief to the wealthiest individuals of our country at the expense of lower- and middle-income American taxpayers.” [McCain Senate floor statement, May 21, 2001]
McCain 2008:
“I will not let the Democrats roll back the Bush tax cuts. I believe we should protect the American family against partisan tax increases by requiring a three-fifths majority in Congress to raise taxes. But that is just a start.”
When will the media outlets and reform experts who slammed Obama for his alleged hypocrisy start scrutinizing McCain?

Not that I give a damn about what you think of me, but for your information, I am a fourth generation American citizen. I am every bit as legal as you are and 100% more American.
I would trade 50 of you arrogant, condescending, hate-America Marxists for 1 one illegal who appreciates and respects the opportunity that America offers.
You are the typical left-wing, intellectually deficient, elitists who resorts to name calling when you can’t address an issue from a logical, intellectual, and rational point of view. Grow up and do something constructive with your life, other than just displaying your ignorance to the world.

BruhMan,
Perhaps it escaped your attention when McCain made those drilling comments that there is a great deal of difference in $20 and $140 oil. The world was not in danger of plunging into financial ruin at that time. Possibly, you can explain to us why it is OK for Cuba to sell drilling rights to China, just 40 mikes from our shore, yet we can’t drill for it ourself?
Your comment about McClain’s flip-flop on tax cuts is a valid argument. Consequently, only a person who had zero knowledge of economics would offer the solution of higher taxes during a period of time of a weak economy. Perhaps you don’t remember the Jimmy Carter administration, but he offered the same economic formula as Obama is now proposing. It took 20 years for America to recover from that fiasco. People who were saving for retirement never have recovered the assets they lost.
If Obama is elected president and follows this same agenda, the democrat party will spend the next 20 years in the wilderness, just as they did after Reagan was elected. The people who are about to retire now are watching their savings dwindle in unprecedented amounts. If the dems don’t offer a realistic solution for bringing down the high oil prices, Obama will go down in the most lopsided defeat in our history. The dems have offered no solutions to any of the problems facing this country. Hope and surrender will only go so far.

Obama is literally the least qualified Democratic nominee in the last 100 years. The sad thing is that so many Americans are so superficial that they react to politics on basically an “American Idol” level, which is where Obama excels. It’s embarassing that someone as superior as McCain is not way ahead at this point. Put aside the emotion – this election is a no-brainer, and if Obama wins, it’ll show the majority of Americans are in fact operating without much intelligence.

No…McCain was against off-shore drilling because of the environmental aspect. Now, he’s aligning himself with the Big Oil crowd…he’s for getting more oil by any means necessary.

Anon,
There was a small minority of Americans who opposed the Viet Nam war before you and your Marxists comrades succeeded in tying the hands of our military. Millions of innocent South Vietnamese civilians were slaughtered because of the cowardly acts of a few Americans, who by the way, history and released documents show were working under the influence of the old Soviet KGB.
Millions of enslaved Iraqi citizens were given their freedom because an American president had the backbone to do what a spineless democrat and United Nations only threatened to do. The Iraq war would have been over a long time ago if it hadn’t been for left-wing cowards releasing secret intelligence and undermining our soldier’s efforts. It must make you proud undermining your own country and giving aid and comfort to an enemy who has vowed to destroy this country. History has proven that radical left-wingers will side with the dictator every time when given the opportunity to make a difference.
As far as your illegal comment goes, I wrote that off as an expected response from a communist-loving coward who is a traitor to his own country.

This election is fascinating thus far. In the last election, Bush was selected as the candidate that most people would like to have a beer with. Even Hilliary brought this up during a debate as a criticism of the Republicans. Yet, most Obama supporters are doing the same thing this election!!! They will vote for Obama not because they believe in his philosophies and plans for the US (because no one really know what both are) but because they just think he is a handsome and cool guy. When all is said and done, both Republicans and Democrats are swayed more by looks than substance of a candidate.

Posted by: Paul | June 29, 2008, 9:12 pm 9:12 pm

BruhMan,
You are correct, McCain’s initial response was for environmental reasons. Perhaps he has watched as the consequences of doing nothing is placing the entire world in jeopardy of economic collapse. It doesn’t matter what his reasons are, the world is in deep despair. You can’t have 2 gigantic developing economies like India and China expand rapidly and keep the energy output at the same level.
This “Big Oil” argument is a self-defeating and illogical argument. Drilling technology has advanced to the point where the environmental hazards are practically nil. We heard the same environment objections when the Alaska pipeline was constructed. The environmentalists were proven wrong then. Not only were the caribou not threatened, they flourished because of the warmth provided by the pipeline. The plan by “big Environmentalist” has not produced one once of additional oil or energy. Democrats play this silly energy game at their own peril. The voting electorate is not going to sit by and reward a political party that is causing economic ruin. The baby boomers are due to retire and they have watched their nest eggs severely erode. If the democrats think they can win an election without the support of retirees they are in store for a lesson in reality. viable alternate forms of energy are decades away. If you think your party can survive on a $5-10 per gallon price of gas, I urge you to stick to your illogical principles.

Paul,
A few, not the only reasons he’s getting my vote.
Education
1. He opposes vouchers being used at private schools because he believes they undermine public schools.
2. Calls for higher pay for teachers and pay based on merit as well.
Healthcare
1.Fully supports a universal health care plan and has stated that we require a plan with “everybody in, nobody out. A single-payer health care plan, a universal health care plan.”
Taxes
1. Proposed an $80 million dollar tax cut for the poor and middle class.
2. Spoke out against estate tax cuts.
3. Eliminate tax credits that are no longer useful.
4. Clost corporate tax loophole.
5. Restore the PAYGO policy, which does not allow federal spending without a plan to make up for lost revenue.
Foreign Policy
1. Will bring a “responsible” end to the war in Iraq as soon as possible.
2. Rebuild and construct alliances worldwide, and restore America’s respect abroad.
3. Invest in “humanity” by providing foreign aid.
Immigration
1. Implement a guest worker program, providing a path towards citizenship for all undocumented workers.
Abortion
1. Believes abortions should be legal according to Roe vs. Wade.
2. Female contraceptives should be covered by health insurance
Reasons I’m voting Barack Hussein Obama unashamedly, unapologeticvally for President of the United States of America!!!

jose,
You’re making my point as you post. You think John McCain gives two flying sh*ts about the price of a barel of oil? He’s being force fed his opinions, and they’re conflictign with his own. McCain has no clue why he NOW supports off-shore drilling. He simply wants to get more oil. Environmental aspects were a good reason to oppose just two years ago, right? Well, on the day he announced his big “drill here, drill now” campaign, he release an “I’m for conserving America’s natural resources, and saving the environment” ad. This guy has no clue on which principle he stands. HE SIMPLY JUST WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT.

BruhMan,
Thanks for making my point. Where will Obama find the revenue for his plans on health care (huge debt), education, foreign aide? What does “responsible” end to the war mean? And please, do not propose that once we pull our troops completely out of Iraq that money will fall from the sky to pay for everything. Even Obama deep down knows that the US has to maintain a strong military presence in the Middle East, or are you proposing that we leave this to the UN? That would be a funny one!

Posted by: Paul | June 29, 2008, 9:30 pm 9:30 pm

jose,
You have got to realize that drilling for oil is not the answer. Sure, we’ll rebuff OPEC for a few years, but there simply is not enough oil off our coasts to ever sustain, or even impact at the rate we’re using. Our problem is refining, alternatives, and conservation. I guess well have to see who gets that $300 mil for the best battery ever produced!!! What a genius idea.

Countries like Iraq, Iran and
North Korea are not major
military powers. They are no
imminent or significant threat
to us.
They are rogue nations. Their
acitvities should be contained
and managed in concert with
allies, through diplomacy,
through the UN, through sanctions
and similar means on an ongoing
basis until we are able to get
them to change their behavior.
Such an approach has worked with
another rogue nation namely Libya.
It seems to be working with
North Korea now.
For example there should be a
plan to take out Iran’s nuclear
facilities. That should be the
only business we should have
there in that country. If Iran
dismantles its nuclear program
that should be the end of it.
We should not have gone into
Iraq at all. Or at least we
should have left when we captured
Saddam Hussein and handed him
over to the Iraqis.
Instead, we don’t seem to know
when to quit. We hang around
trying to boil the ocean. That’s
what is wrong with our foreign
policy.

Bruhman, dude, calm down. I was just asking for facts. Those in the Middle East who want to destroy the US since before 2001 are not going away. The reality is that the area has to be policed, and unfortunately the US is the only country with the capability to do it. Trust me, I would love not for us to be there, but I just don’t trust our country’s luck that we wouldn’t be attacked again.

Attacking the US on a daily basis? No. But, I imagine there are groups in the Middle East who would be quite please on an attack every other year. Should the US be prepared to afford an attack every two years? I bet you good money that even if Obama pulls the troops out of Iraq, they will be based in Kuwait or Basra. Even then, he can claim that we puller our troops out of Iraq, even tough they are still a few clicks east.

Posted by: Paul | June 29, 2008, 9:58 pm 9:58 pm

Ok, fine. Leave it to the police to root our terrorism. But, we leave in an imperfect world. What do you do when the “Police” are not capable of rooting out the terrorist, or worse, they are sympathetic to the terrorist?

Posted by: Paul | June 29, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

I suggest that there are more similarities between the Republicans and the Democrats when it comes to Iraq. Neither WANTS to be in Iraq, but the Republicans feel that we NEED to be in Iraq. I really feel that the number of troops in the Middle East, whether they are in Iraq or in a neighboring country, will be the same regardless if McCain or Obama is elected. The cost for maintaining either presence will continue to be a huge toll for the US. I hate it as much as anyone, but 9/11 forced the US to change its policies in the Middle East. We didn’t start 9/11, but the added cost of securing the US as a result will tax generations to come.
Gotta go….

BruhMan,
I am no admirer of John McCain, so let’s not muddy the water with partisan motives. I, like many other conservatives and independents don’t have a voice in this election. You seem like a fairly intelligent individual, but your pessimism reminds me of the genuise, who stated at the beginning of the last century, that there was no need for more research or inventions, that we already know all there is to know and have invented all there is to invent. My point is, during the Carter years, the eco-terrorists and pseudo-scientist told us that we had ten years of world-wide oil reserves left. Here, 40 years later, we have more proven reserves than we did then. To claim that we have discovered all of the feasible oil reserves seems like a rather arrogant and close-minded approach to such a serious problem affecting the entire world. Almost on a routine basis, larger and previously unknown proven reserves are discovered. Not by accident, but because “Big Oil” is allowed to look for them. What has “Big Environmentalists” contributed 5to solve the crisis?
I have lived in oil producing states and know first-hand that oil does not pose an abnormal environmental risk. In fact shipping ethanol by railroad or tanker is far more hazardous, not to mention costly, in terms of food prices and production.
The governors of these states, who you alluded to, will find their political careers cut short as the impact of high oil prices take it’s toll on the price of everything and peoples standard of living is reduced to third-world status.
You addressed government waste from the Iraq war, to another poster. I would invite you to exam the totality of government waste, fraud and corruption, system wide. Government has proven time and again that it can not and will not run anything efficiently. Those who cry for more government involvement in our lives are asking the government to through 90 cents of every dollar sent to Washington, out the window.
I stand by previous statements, anyone who continues to obstruct the construction of more refineries, oil production, nuclear generators, etc. will face the wrath of an angry and hostile electorate. We can drill more and create alternate energy sources at the same time. American’s can accomplish amazing things when government bureaucrats and pseudo-scientists are removed from obstructing the process.
One other thing, is it just an accident, that while “Big Oil” is demonized, “Big Corn” is grown and heavily subsidized in states that are represented by rabid left-wing and out- of-touch liberal republican politicians? You need to apply a little more deep analysis to the energy crisis before you lose your credibility.

I think if California insists on the “not in my back yard” policy with regards to off shore drilling there should be a cost to Californians. They are the biggest energy pigs in North Ameriheca if not the world and insist on rest of us doing the dirty work so they can have a pristine coast…way beyond the vision of a human. My oppinion is mine and I say California should rely on itself or foreign energy….nothing from our gulf or any other American state that does oil or coal extraction. They are greedy and hypocritical and can kiss my behind….nice carbon footprint we all get to breath thanks to Californian insistance on building in stupid places….More money bail them out…again and again.

Morons and idiots – and I’m calling everyone who posted here that. I’d prefer it if the candidates were sunk by their own words – as they usually are – rather than heckled, but that’s the American way. Freedom of speech.
But I call everyone who has posted for or against any candidate here a moron and an idiot for the simple reason that regardless of what you have said, no one here has swayed anyone else to your point of view.
Zero. Zip. Nada. Zilch. None.
Freedom of speech allows you to post whatever drivel you want, be it informed or not, ignorant or not, moronic or not. But your speech has impacted nothing, done nothing, helped no one, changed no minds whatsoever.
Oh, and paul, if you had ANY clue about the US offshore oil reserves (3% of the world’s total at most), and when it can be brought to market (at the earliest 5 years, MAYBE), and that it can’t change the price of oil at ALL, and that California is the 8th LOWEST user of gas per capita by state with Wyoming, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Main as the top users of gas per capita and that California uses LESS ENERGY PER PERSON THAN ANY STATE IN THE UNION, you’d maybe have made a point, instead of an ass of yourself. (Sources: US Census bureau, California Department of Energy, US Department of Energy 2001-2004)

Posted by: Fatesrider | June 30, 2008, 3:06 am 3:06 am

Jose, you might want to check your facts about ‘big corn’ Ethanol and the ‘liberal’ support for it.
1. Liberals do not support it. Conservative-lead farm subsidies do. Liberals knew better than to support making food into fuel.
2. No non-oil-aligned liberal is currently supporting the corn as fuel implementation.
3. Big oil heavily invested in ethanol programs not as alternative fuel, but as a perpetuation of the oil habit. It was done to maintain or promote the oil-use status quo.
Drilling more oil will NOT help the price go down. Increasing oil and gas production may drop the price over a short time, but demand will drive it back up. If the price drops, and there are no viable, large scale alternatives, people will start driving more, and the demand will go up immediately once again, driving up the price.
Global oil production is not meeting current or projected global oil demand, which is why, contrary to all economic theories, regardless of small drops in demand here and there, the price of crude oil continues to go up. Speculation only sees more demand. That drives up the price of futures which effects the price of oil. Add to that the weak dollar (it’s estimated the weak dollar adds $35.00-$50.00 a barrel in the price) and you have more issues than increasing the amount of oil on the market can handle in order to bring down the price.
It will take an overall global drop in oil demand before the price will go down, and that is not projected to EVER happen given current trends. Rather than feeding the oil habit (drilling will take away much needed time, effort and revenue from finding more cost-effective, renewable, clean (while we’re at it) and affordable alternatives), we should invest – heavily – in the research, development and implementation of those alternatives. Corn ain’t one of them, as everyone except the oil company supporters know.
Why run the risk and expense of defiling our coasts (and costing billions of dollars in clean-up) when oil is a known dead end as a viable fuel base?
Unless you own stock in Shell, no thinking human being alive can possibly believe drilling for more oil is going to EVER help ANYTHING, let alone high fuel prices, except enriching the very people who brought us 9/11.
Lord, you can lead people to knowledge, but you can’t make them THINK!

Well what would you expect. Any American opposed to the war should be voting Obama. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Obama can not tell them not to air thier views because that is what America is all about. The big question is: How is McCain dealing with this unbecoming interrruptions? I personally believe he should shift his 100 years stand and agree that American troops ought to be pulled out of Iraq.

No one is being denied free speech – except the public speaker when he is being heckled. They did the same thing to Bill Clinton – I think he got rather mad about it a couple of times during this campaign. People can get a permit and stand out on any street corner and say whatever they want. Its just that no one would come listen to these political hecklers. I think we are moving away from civility in America. Let both candidates say their peace and everyone can vote for whoever they agree with. Its just rude to try to drown out someone saying what you don’t want to hear. I would be ashamed of people doing that to either McCain or Obama. I am proud of NALEO for their handling of this.

Fatesrider – I thought your stand against more drilling was at least thought out – whether I totally agree or not, its nice to see some intelligence in an argument every now and then. I agree that fossil fuels cannot be the world’s long term answer to energy. However, are you for Nuclear? The Democrats aren’t. If you are not, how do you intend to maintain our energy needs in the short term. I think fusion will be big 30 to 50 years from now, but what about the next 25 years. I want us to drill for the short term, maybe open a few Nuclear plants, but be looking for the long term solution as well. I read Obama’s energy stance – on his site. He is for clean energy that will get us off of foreign dependence. But there are no details – what clean energy is he advocating that can meet our needs? Until I get some specifics on that, I will not be voting for him. If the only energy policies being pushed by the left is wind, solar, and big taxes on our energy providers, then we are in a lot of trouble. But I would be interested in hearing differently. And I do apologize for this being off subject of the article.

THE REAL REASON WE ARE IN IRAQ IS TO LINE THE POCKETS OF THE OIL BARONS AND CORPORATE OWNERS OF THE US. If your candidate supports this… they deserve to be heckled at the very least. Perhaps the American Sheeple could then be startled awake by the commotion being made by those that have the awareness to stop ignorantly bleating the directives of the wolves… who are leading US to the slaughter. Permit THE PINK ONES to disrupt the massive matrix of illusion being perpetrated upon the flock before we ALL become someone else’s illegal immigrant problem… or choose to swallow the wrong conscious numbing pill so you don’t have to see the reality that exists because it is much too painful for you to accept responsibility for. And… OMG… it is just reprehensible and so uncivilized to dare interrupt a liar and cheat when they are in the middle of lying and cheating don’t ya think? I mean hell… engaging in illegal and immoral occupations in order to usurp natural resources… killing hundreds of thousands… if not millions of innocent human beings in the process isn’t even comparable in terms of disruptiveness and rudeness. Move along… nothing to see here folks… and pay no mind to that man behind the curtain. Indeed… this must be OZ.. or some other such fantasy island type episode in human history to be scoffed at in some future arena under the heading of “HOW COULD THEY BE SO STUPID?”I have to shake my head in shock and awe when reading through the comments on these boards because they certainly prove that artificial intelligence will certainly be no match for natural stupidity.
I mean there are sheeple here that are actually threatening to vote for a leader based on some of the most juvenile criteria one could imagine and I’m supposed to be more aggravated by a group of Code Pinkers speaking out and doing what they have devoted themselves to do since Mad Cowboy Bushwacky decided to invade a sovereign nation for illegitimate and illegal reasons? I reckon that could be mighty painful and disruptive to the sleeping masses though. Anyone that still believes that we are engaged in the present wars we find ourselves… in order to protect our freedoms or bring security to our HOMELAND… is seriously “Lost In Space”… that space between their ears… which is a black hole devoid of any gray matter what so ever. Do you not realize how ow WHY this country was founded and what kind of UN-CIVIL… RUDE… OBNOXIOUS DISSENT it took to do it? If these candidates can not handle being heckled… they aren’t going to be worth much in terms of securing our nation against both foreign or domestic threats are they? If you label those that disagree with you as threats or enemies… you are going to have to engage in eternal war because you will make enemies of those that were not originally a threat to you… nor your enemy .
