In City of Brotherly Love, McCain Recalls Obama “Bitter” Comments

At a town hall meeting in Philadelphia today, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., recalled the remarks Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, made in April about suffering small town Pennsylvanians turning "bitter" and clinging to guns, religion, and bigotry.

(Remember that?)

The topic came up when McCain predicted to the supportive crowd that he can win Pennsylvania this November by traveling to small towns throughout the state.

"I’m going to tell them I don’t agree with Senator Obama that they cling to their religion and the Constitution because they’re bitter," McCain said, per ABC News’ Bret Hovell. " I’m going to tell them they have faith and they have trust and support the Constitution of the United States because they have optimism and hope and are the strength of America."

Obama apologized for his comments, saying he spoke clumsily, but both McCain and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, pounced upon them as evidence of Obama’s elitism.

"That’s what America is all about," McCain continued, "the people who love our country, who cherish their religion and support the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. And that’s the message and that’s another reason why we’re going to win the state of Pennsylvania, next November the 4th."

Heralding his ability to work in a bipartisan fashion in Congress, McCain joked about reaching out to Senator Hillary Clinton’s myriad supporters in the state now that she has dropped out of the race.

"I know how to sit down and reach across the aisle," he said. "I will attract independents, Democrats – by the way, those supporters of Senator Clinton, I welcome you here today."

The crowd laughed appreciatively.

OK, gas is over $4 a gal., the economy is definitely on the skids, we’re fighting two wars against people who only know war and the 72 yr old Repub candidate can only come up with this? Sure he can reach across the aisle cause they all, Dems & Repubs only know how to fill their own hands. I have to agree with Jesse Ventura, that they should have a box that says “none of the above” on all ballots. That way you can vote and tell the Dems & Repubs, you don’t like any of them, and thats getting easier and easier very day.

Just go to the polls and vote for everyone except the president. If you’re serious, that’s equivalent to voting ‘none of the above’.

Obama is an arrogant man. I think he would be smart to ask Hillary to be his VP, but because she is so much smarter, more experienced and worldly, he probably won’t. She would completely overshadow him, and rightly so.

I could care less what Obama said about these “small town” people. Who cares? Doesn’t affect the price of gas, unemployment, healthcare cost, etc. You really think McCain or any other Republican/Conservative cares about any of that? You small town folks are hurting and will keep on hurting if you let another Republican in the White House because your emotions are clouding your judgment. Emotions come and go and once you have calmed down and you realize what you’ve done, nobody will care what crisis your dealing with. Nobody wants to hear your cryin’ and whinin’. Some of you people just have to learn the hard way. A hard head makes a soft behind.

I read half of one of your posts and nothing else you have said except the posts pestering me to answer you.
I only have this to say. If this were THE only reason I had for voting for McCain, it would be enough to overshadow ANYTHING that Obama has promised or lied about or whatever it is he does. The following in it’s self is enough to make McCain the smart choice. It proves courage, commitment to people and country and that is good enough for me and many other Americans.
In mid-1968, McCain’s father was named commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater, and McCain was offered early release. The North Vietnamese wanted to appear merciful for propaganda purposes, and also wanted to show other POWs that elites like McCain were willing to be treated preferentially. McCain turned down the offer of repatriation; he would only accept the offer if every man taken in before him was released as well.

McCain is just trying to distract attention away from his blunder of saying that a timetable to leave Iraq is “not that important”. He said this to Matt Lauer on the Today show. Of course the McCain campaign then complained of the Obama campaign taking McCains words out of context. Then McCain goes and takes Obamas “bitter” comments out of context and even repeats them incorrectly, saying “guns and constitution” twice, instead of “guns and religion”. Is McCain getting SENILE?????

Obama has pledged to cut the U.S. Military Budget by tens of billions of dollars each year, stop the development of new weapons system, and drastically reduce America’s nuclear arsenal.
Obama has also never served in any branch of the United States Armed Forces, even though he thinks he is better qualified than War Hero John McCain to be commander-in-chief.
Obama is not a leader, and I wouldn’t follow Neo-Socialist Obama to the bathroom.
There is no way on God’s green earth that I’m voting for Obama, and anyone who is concerned about America remaining the world’s only super-power shouldn’t either!

The Pentagon always asks for, and gets, more money than it needs. This leads to wasteful spending. If the military were to run itself more efficiently, it wouldn’t be the money burning machine that it is. Why does every branch of the military have it’s own special forces???? Wouldn’t it be better to have one elite special forces and draw from all the branches? Does the pentagon really need $500 to buy a hammer.

Saying “FACT!” without citing the source is like saying you’re a millionaire when your checking account is overdrawn.
Bill Clinton has donated more money to blacks and their causes….. for no reason other than he and HIllary wanted to.
His generousity started years ago and increased perceptively as his income rose from book sales, speeches etc.
Percentage-wise, B O has been a piker when it came to pitching in to help his brothers….. BUT he did earmark over a $1,000,000 to Michelle’s boss… which effected a cushy raise in her behalf,
And he DID earmark another $15,000,000
for his church.
(Is this where Jeremiah’s $10,000,000 pension fund came from? And his atrociously expensive new retirement home? )
Is this the going rate for pastors? or does B O get to pocket some pork bellies on the deal????)
Hillary doesn’t want the vice presidency; she would be picking up after B O’s boneheaded mistakes daily… and she’ll have plenty of opportunity to clean up after “kids” when Chelsea gives her grand children!
So not to worry on that account.
NO NO to another BO ZO!

No American military man or woman should die because Obama wants to cut the U.S. Military budget, especially when it comes to the development of new weapons systems.
Obama is not worried about having superior firepower, because he has never been to combat.
He probably think that “dead space” is outer space, instead of the area forward of a defensive perimeter, that is not covered by direct fire weapons (e.g., ditches, ravines, etc.).

Sally, pressure should not be put on U.S. Military troops to cut costs during a dangerous conflict by a commander-in-chief, who has never served in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
McCain knows how important it is to keep our Armed Forces superior to our enemies.
Obama doesn’t, and his plan to cut money from the U.S. Armed Forces will put U.S. Military troops in more danger.

Obama promises to cut tens of billions of dollars each year from the U.S. Military Budget.
U.S. serviceman should not have to sacrifice superior firepower, just because Obama thinks that he can save tens of billions of dollars by making the Military make do with less.

Posted by: USmarine0331 | June 11, 2008, 10:26 pm 10:26 pm

whether you agree with this war or not, any u.s. president who CUTS the military budget is an idiot. thats absolutely ridiculous, irresponsible thought. while its easy to say war is not the answer, the biggest, strongest military in the worlds history is absoulutely a necessity. why would we willingly give that up?! what are some peoples train of thought on this? its because people that live in this country get “too comfortable” with their freedoms. the reason we have what we have, and continue to protect what we have, is because we have a military deterrant. yeah, lets cut that budget so we can pay for uniersal healthcare. good idea barack.

Barack Obama gave an interview in April to a Chicago television station and talked about his policy on Iraq.Obama tries to explain that he has never called for a withdrawal of troops from Iraq, but wants to complete the mission there:
Q: But you’ve said troops should be withdrawn (from Iraq).
A: No, no, I’ve never said troops should be withdrawn
Really? This is what his website offers for his Iraq policy: Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. Obama will make it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq. He will keep some troops in Iraq to protect our embassy and diplomats; if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes on al Qaeda.

I hope War Hero and U.S. Veteran John McCain puts Civilian Obama on the skyline for his remarks in that Y outube video.
Obama needs to explain in the upcoming debates why he wants U.S. serviceman to make do with less, just because he thinks it is a good idea to stop the development of superior firepower combat weapons systems to save money that he wants to spend on big government entitlement programs.

Posted by: USmarine0331 | June 11, 2008, 10:32 pm 10:32 pm

Sally, if you support U.S. servicemen, don’t vote for a commander-in-chief, who has never served in any branch of the U.S. Military.
War is not academic.
It’s gory, scary, confusing, and evolving.
Maintaining Superior firepower is the key to victory.
Anything that reduces our military superiority puts U.S. Military troops at risk.
No commander-in-chief should sacrifice the safety of his troops to cut costs.

Posted by: tim | June 11, 2008, 10:39 pm 10:39 pm

In response to most of the arguments against Obama:
If one is worried about “Tax and Spend” democrats, why would one complain about Obama’s desire to cut spending on new weapons. Don’t we already have enought weapons to destroy the world a few times over?
On insulting small town Americans:
I am one, and he was responding to a question about those few small town Americans who vote republican against their economic interests. He said those people are bitter (by the neglect from politicians), cling to their gun (rights),and religion ( religious issues).
I am not insulted because I don’t put gun rights and religious issues over economic issues and the welfare of the country.
As for McCain’s war hero status:
We are all very impressed he survived the POW camp and gave them hell. How does that prove he is ready to be Commander in Chief? Did you think Kerry was better than Bush? I bet you did not vote for Kerry. So being a Vietnam vet is only a test for commander in chief if you are a republican.
As to McCains morals:
His wife waited for him for 5 years while he was held prisoner.
He came back to find her altered from a car accident and had affairs with trophy women in front of her face until he found the richest woman that would have him and dumped her. Ugh!

We know they don’t have the equi[ment they need. I have friends who have gone to Iraq. Many of them don’t want the war to continue. We cannot afford it, and our boys are in trouble. Every year I see some wonderful students who I’ve watched grow enter the military because they think it’s the only way to get out of this small town. I hate seeing them go. They don’t have to die so young. If you saw so many poor boys joining to serve in a war they will probably die in after you’ve taken care of them for four years you would be against the war too.

Chuck Hagel and Ron Paul are honorable Republicans who do not agree with George Bush, and I would not throw them in with the Bush administration. I have many republican friends, as well as family. I do not hate republicans. McCain was wonderful win 2000, he has switched on many of the key issues, and has dissappointed me.
I know many people who go to church for the social network, and usually keep the praying to themselves. Your head would spin if you knew what was said in these Southern White Christian Churches . Not everyone who attends them agree with the pastor, but they have built a life around the CHURCH not the pastors beliefs. Those with independent minds do not believe what they hear, they believe their logical reasoning. Those who are strong are not swayed by sitting in the pews.
On your average american comment:
I would not be so presumptious to claim I held the values of the average american. I do not believe there is a well defined average american. He does share the values of the plurarity of Americans or he would not be leading in the polls.
I want to watch Jon Stewart. Over and Out.

To Hillary supporters who might be here,
If Hillary ever wants to become president either in 2012 or 2016, at least this time obama has to be elected.
just think …. how could Maccain come back to GOP nominee after 8 years? Because he put his whole energy to help Bush elected in 2000… otherwise, he would have gone long ago…
if obama loses this time, everybody knows this is due to hillary supporters who vote for maccain, and you never dare to imagine she can ever become a DNC nominee … and i know her, her whole life has been with DNC…. she will never come out as independent.
Calm down little bit and take a long shot. Your emotion won’t help her at all.

Quote from Obama’s speech–
My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you’ll join with me as we try to change it.”
Hope–people will believe him
Change–from a democratic nation to a racist/socialist nation.
Do you want that, voters?

you simply cant just blame ONE party for our financial mess. i remind you, the dems have had control of congress for over two years again. when did things really start to get bad??? what was the price of gas two years ago? when did the mortgage crisis come to light? why is the dollar ACTUALLY losing value? listen, dont take me for a die hard republican, because im not. but if they get their backbone back, and stand up for what they believe, the country will be better off. we have to get back to common sense ideas in this country. that means SMALLER government. we can sit and play the partisan game all day, but we need people with common sense to fix these problems. and seeing how the government is ALWAYS the ones who makes things worse, i for one say lets make that smaller. not give them MORE power. now thats common sense.

Dumb post!
Mccain’s economic plan… while not as complete as Hillary’s… is a lot more friendly to the poor and middle class than Bozo’s is…..
Black or white, we’re all hurting (except for the CEOs of Exxon and Mobil.
We NEEd some help here…. and Obama’s plan is a mish mash of myopic money words symbolizing no help at all!
It’s one thing to vote for a president because the color of his skin matches yours….. but it’s quite another to
cut off your nose to provide a “new look”!
There are plenty of Hillary’s supporters in these blogs… Hopefully they will find a way to take this travesty of an election to the convention. Should that not work,, you will hear the sound of high heels and sneakers walking further and further away…… to Republican Lane.
Your argument is defective and senile. (Isn’t that the Obama blogger’s
word of the week?)
The change you chant about will take us back sixty years.
Unless you are outrageously rich, you’d be a fool to bet on B O…. but it’s your perogative.
The DNC is broken!

Trying to decide between Obama and McCain is like which rotten apple to eat. One just wants to walk away and go hungry. Neither can solve our problems. VERY SAD AFFAIR

Sadly, the “straight talk” McCain is turning out to be an opportunist demagogue, just like his brethren in the Republican primary ensemble. How sad.

Posted by: nmben | June 12, 2008, 12:31 am 12:31 am

Obama is the demagogue who want to bring in change without telling what the change is.
Pandered to Rev. Wright to get the black vote.
Pandered to the elites and lunatic leftwing of the democratic party by removing Flag pin.
Pandered to the Iowa voters by removing his name from the Michigan Ballot.
Never worked in a bipartisan fashion except on small potato legislation.
The main stream media folks are not talking about this because they are in the tank for Obama. Shame on them. It is time to change the faces of the main stream media analysts. Throw them out. Real change is that. We need journalists who are not partisan scoundrels.

Voters will begin to reject Obama (and his wife) as soon as they figure out the Obamas are racist Marxist elites set out to destroy America.

Harry Reid said yesterday that Obama is an “All-Star”. Will somebody please tell me what Obama has accomplished or done in his few years in the Senate that makes him an All-Star? With all the talent the Dems have, this rookie legislator who never held a meeting of his Foreign Affairs Subcommittee is an All-Star? It just doesn’t make sense.

Hopesprings52,
Obama did manage to get that Anti-Lobby bill passed in the Senate.

Hey Hope.
Do you think the dems CARE if Obama can do the job or not?
If they did, he wouldnt be the nominee.

I have to agree with John Murtha, the Real straight-talker. The Presidentcy is no place for an OLD man, especially an OLD man that is noted for his uncontrollable temper tantrums. Obama 2008!!!

MCcain has to be a total idiot—small town pa is bitter——when all your jobs have gone to mexico or wallmart china you need to be bitter—however they are also idiots as they spend what little they have in junkstore wallyworld.and never have anything.

pt
i would have a problem supporting someone who spent 5 years in a vietnam prison camp–as most still have mental issues–and yes that is serious as MCcains temper shows some sort of problem–something he tries to cover with his mild mannered front.

Hubby got laid off because his company out sourced overseas. His oldest son can’t help contribute to the house hold income, because he is in Iraq.
While hubby sits at home going over the bills on the kitchen table. mom and sis go to church, hoping God might hear them.
NO MATTER HOW YOU TRY TO TWIST IT FOR YOUR OWN PERVERTED GAIN, THIS IS WHAT ALOT OF THE BACK BONE OF AMERICA IS DEALING WITH. tHIS IS WHAT THEY MIGHT FEEL BITTER (and helpless) ABOUT.
I COULD TAKE THE TIME TO EXPLAIN IT TO YOU McCAIN, BUT I STILL DON’T THINK YOU’D UNDERSTAND IT, OR CARE, OR “THINK IT’S IMPORTANT.”

As a 30 year democrat this will be fun see the chosen ONE lose the same as McGovern in 1972.
I was too young to remember that time in 1972, but this will be a chance for me to see the same effect in the GE.
McCain 08

Actually, Obama lost the economic war.
He signed the juicy Oil bill introduced by Cheney.
This gave the oil companies a whole pile of givaways. Consumers are shocked and are finally hearing about it.
Obama says he cant do anything about the high price of gas. He refuses to drill , and says we should just all suck it up and drive less.
Pretty easy to say when you make 300k a year in salaries plus millions from book sales I suppose.

Posted by: same old | June 12, 2008, 8:24 am 8:24 am

same OLD,
You do realize that McCain wants to give Exxon/Mobil a 1.5 BILLION tax break, right? Which make perfect sense to me, since Exxon is struggling right now and we Americans should give as much of our tax money as possible to be sure Exxon stays solvent.

Dennis in Orlando, FL, you wrote: “Doesn’t affect the price of gas, unemployment, healthcare cost, etc. You really think McCain or any other Republican/Conservative cares about any of that? You small town folks are hurting and will keep on hurting if you let another Republican in the White House because your emotions are clouding your judgment.”
It has been the Republicans who have spent the last 20 years attempting to open up new drilling, building new refineries and new nuclear plants so that we can end our dependence on foreign oil. But the Democrats continue to block these. Just the other day the Democrats once again blocked the efforts of the Republicans to open up drilling 50-200 miles off shore. Yet China is drilling 60 miles off Florida right now.
Electing Democrats will only raise the price of gasoline even higher with their $1-$3 increase in the federal tax on gasoline. Democrats have always wanted Americans to pay the same for our gasoline that Europeans pay for theirs ($6-$8). It will be 20 years before alternative fuels can fully replace gasoline. So without an increase in the supply of gasoline we can only expect much higher costs. One report envisions $15 per gallon in just the next 5-10 years.
Electing Democrats with their tax, tax, spend, tax, tax, spend, tax, tax, spend philosophy coupled with their disdain for Corporate America, will decimate the free market (with federal interference) and severely cripple small businesses (by raising taxes and mandating 50% fewer emissions). This will cause a huge spike in unemployment.
Electing Democrats will bankrupt the country. We are already on the verge of bankruptcy with the current entitlement programs (Social Security and Medicare) unless they are reformed. Yet the Democrats want to add new very expensive entitlements (i.e., implement womb-to-tomb universal health care and free college for everyone). In order to pay for these programs the Democrats want to raise the taxes on those individuals who are making $250,000. That will also raise the taxes on small businesses. But at the same time the Democrats are saying they want to give tax breaks to the middle class. This will take money away from the new entitlement programs. So they will have to raise taxes even higher for the wealthiest Americans. This is wealth re-distribution!
So who’s emotions are clouding whose judgement?

McCain is not too bright. Maybe once he masters reading,I can actually listen to him. As a service members wife, I find it very sad that any one would vote for someone that would keep this war going. If they are WINNING bring them home. I wish that everyone was this critical of Bush then maybe the families would still have their sons and daughters. Its funny that we would ride the same old ride again. When do we except people for who they really are.I have nothing against McCain butI am not going to watch my husband fight this pointless war. I guess when our death toll raises even more then we will just start complaining again. To some its “BLACK MAN” or DEATH. Some choose death. Im not bitter, I dont even think theres a word to describe my feeling. :-)
