Jimmy Carter: Whole of Clinton + Obama Would Be Less Than Sum Of Its Two Parts

In an interview with the British newspaper the Guardian, former President Jimmy Carter said "I think it would be the worst mistake that could be made. That would just accumulate the negative aspects of both candidates."

How so?

"If you take that 50% who just don’t want to vote for Clinton," Carter said, "and add it to whatever element there might be who don’t think Obama is white enough or old enough or experienced enough or because he’s got a middle name that sounds Arab, you could have the worst of both worlds."

Listen HERE.

Carter is a moron. I’ll NEVER give Obama my vote. EVER.
I’m really going to enjoy McCain’s landslide victory in November.
McCain 08
Clinton 12

I’m just surprised that Carter’s comments are a big deal because they are one big “DUH.” What does Obama have to gain from putting Clinton on the ticket, other than losing votes from all of the people who have hated the Clintons for almost two decades?

The horrible people who poisoned these blogs for months now apparently have been on the telephone all day. FOX reports:
“An angry and upset Rep. James Clyburn said Wednesday that his office has been deluged with nasty phone calls with racial overtones since his endorsement of Barack Obama a day earlier.
Clyburn told FOX News Radio’s “Brian and the Judge” that the callers identified themselves as Hillary Clinton supporters. Clyburn, an African-American and the third ranking House Democrat, said a white intern in his office was so upset by the calls that she had to be consoled by other workers and left the office early.
“We got more vitriolic, nasty phone calls, really racially tinged phone calls in my congressional office, so much so, until one of the interns, a young lady who is not a stranger to politics … and she is not a black person, she left the office, had to be consoled because of the kinds of phone calls from people who identified themselves as Hillary Clinton supporters,” he said.
Clyburn said some of the callers used “names that I would not repeat on this show today.” ”
Shame on Hillary Clinton, and shame on her supporters!

Jimmy Carter mismanaged his presidency. I would not listen to him for advice. BTW, once again Hillary is outperforming Obama versus McCain, according to Gallup. Well, that’s the last penny I ever give to them.

okay, ex democrat. Don’t let the door hti you on the way out.
If you would rather have an overturning of roe, continuation on Iraq, tax cuts for the upper class and a strong arm foriegn policy, instead of acknowledging clinton took obama for granted and got routed in feb, then go ahead and vote for an old, white man who wants to control your body, send your kids to war and continue recessionary policies.

Obama and Clinton; poisonous chalice.

Most of Obama advisors are either from the Carter or Clinton era. So, how does that equal to change same ole same ole. I don’t want Hillary on the ticket, let Obama fail , he deserves too. Obama need Hillary more than she would ever need him. Any way it won’t matter he won’t be president, all those super delegates and pundits choose the wrong person. McCain 08!

The more people like Pres. Carter come out against HC the better. I am hoping for anything to shove her out of the Dem Party into an independent.

Listen, I’m a Clinton supporter, and I think he’s right. I worry that, if he picks her, the perception will be that she forced her way on the ticket. That would make him seem weaker.
Frankly, though, I don’t want her as VP because she can do so much more in the Senate. I also think she can lead the fight for health care from there far more effectively than if she were VP (and, perhaps, even more effectively than if she were president).
I’m really disappointed that she isn’t the nominee. As much as I really do not like Obama for a lot that has happened during this election (and, though it may not be fair to him, because of how much a pass the media gave him), I’ll be voting him. The alternative is much, much worse.

From the ROSS REPORT:
“Will Sen. Clinton go down graciously or ugly? One has to say, provisionally, that “ugly” appears to have it.
Crystal clear example provided by the Chronicle’s Carla Marinucci: Obama’s historic victory, she writes, was a momentous occasion in American politics not acknowledged by the country’s first viable female presidential candidate.”
OBAMA NEED NOT FEEL OBLIGED TO PICK THIS WOMAN.

Posted by: Truth | June 4, 2008, 4:48 pm 4:48 pm

Could Obama supporters be any more delusional. Your man is going down hard in November. And, I can already hear everyone blaming Hillary for Obama’s landslide loss: It will be her fault if she’s on the ticket (she won’t be) and if she isn’t, sycophantic media and Obama supporters will say her support was half-hearted and insufficient. The bottom line is that a smart, strong woman still can’t get a fair shake. This woman is packing up her crayons and going home, and I won’t be at the polls in November.

PLEDGED DELEGATES
Obama 1763 – Winner (+123)
Clinton 1640
POPULAR VOTE (includes MI/FL/Caucuses)
Obama 18,697,142 – Winner (+82,881)
Clinton 18,614,261

Maria – how do you know that Clinton is personally responsible for these phone calls? How do you know its not an obama planned scheme to make Clinton look bad once again, because she didn’t fold for obama last night? How do you know for certain it wasn’t the Republicans starting on obama? These were phone calls, not a video conference where itdenties are made. You what little brains you have left that haven’t been brainwashed by your cult leader obama. You think he plays fair?? Now that is funny.

And to Jane: I can afford to go to Canada if I ever need an abortion, and I have no kids to be drafted, so I really don’t care if Roe v. Wade gets overturned or this war drags on for decades. I’d like to see the young people who are so pro-Obama have to get off their duffs and work for real change (as opposed to Obama’s rhetoric) the way people did in the 1960s.

Posted by: Cardsgal | June 4, 2008, 4:53 pm 4:53 pm

katmandu,
the reason why Hillary for the moment is outperforming Obama versus McCain is a small minority of Clinton supporters who are prepared to punish America with four more years of Bush policy because their candidate lost. If she can’t win, to hell with America, right?
Whatever happened to the ‘I’m not bitter’ stickers?

Posted by: El_Pajaro | June 4, 2008, 4:55 pm 4:55 pm

Yes, Maria, and like I said on one of the other blogs,
How about what all of the Obama supporters had to say after the Father Pfleger Hillary video was revealed?
“Oh, why should he apologize, he’s not the one that said it….”;
“Oh, it wasn’t Obama saying it, what does it matter???”
“Just because people he’s gone to church with, and worshipped with for 20 years are saying these things, doesn’t mean he has anything to do with it…”
Sound familiar???

Posted by: tww | June 4, 2008, 5:06 pm 5:06 pm

I think President Carter might be on to something here. I don’t think anyone will benefit from putting Hillary on the ticket. I think she should go back to the Senate, where the Democratic Party could do with some leadership what with Sens Kennedy and Byrd coming to the end of their careers. If she wants to negotiate out of the race, get Obama to agree that her name can be on whatever health care bill can get passed, get her campaign debts sorted and then leave the stage till the convention and then act as cheerleader in chief for the Obama/AN oter ticket.
One other move though I think Obama could do for Clinton is pick a Clinton surrogate on the ticket, maybe Ed Rendell or Evan Bayh?
For my money Obama’s short list should be something like Rendell, Bayh, Bill Richardson, Clare McCaskill, Joe Biden and maybe someone like Jim Webb. I guess at the end of the day though he has to pick his own choice.

The CNN pollster who stands by that cool electronic board just said that his analysis of current polling leads him to conclude McCain would beat Obama narrowly, but adding Clinton would create a landslide win for Obama, helping him pick up Florida and Arkansas, and adding some shaky midwest states as well as KY and WV.

I expect that from men, but what’s wrong with you women. Obama’s administration will need every dem out there. And to isolate someone from your own side is just plain stupid.Follow your leader’s (Obama) advice and shut up.It’s obviously the republicans. Carter isn’t getting cantanerous, he’s living in reality. As for the CNN pole…poles are statistics and “there are lies, damn lies and statistics.” Statistics don’t mean squat because they can be twisted to prove just about anything. Hilalry as VP would only destroy the Obama Presidency…she would be always trying to one-up him and the last thing we need is Mr. Know-if-all Bill near the White House. It’s time to let the Clinton era slowly fade into the sunset. It’s time for a new day. BTW…according to the DNC, Hillary didn’t win the popular vote.

Obama can’t even bring Dems together and how will he promise to bring Americans together??
Now he changed his stance on Iran in order to woo Jewish people.. Can he be trusted? He was against War, but he said there was no time-table to withdraw… he was against NAFTA but he said it was just campaign language.. He said white blue colar working class people bitter but he said he didn’t mean it.. He called his pastor as uncle and spiritual advisor for 20 years but he eventually throw him under the bus for his president dream..
So how can Americans trust Obama when he constinuously admitted he didn’t mean what he said…

Obama fraudulently claimed to be the nominee last night and this ruse is being continued in the media.
The facts of the matter are:
Total vote = 33,808,579 (without Mich. “UNCOMMITTED”)
Total vote = 34,046,747 (with Mich. “UNCOMMITTED”)
Total Clinton = 17,090,391 (with Mich. “UNCOMMITTED”)
Total Obama = 16,956,356 (with Mich. “UNCOMMITTED”)
Total Diff. = +134,035 (Clinton) (with Mich. “UNCOMMITTED”)
Total Pct. = +0.4% (Clinton) (with Mich. “UNCOMMITTED”)
Total Clinton = 17,090,391 (without Mich. “UNCOMMITTED”)
Total Obama = 16,718,188 (without Mich. “UNCOMMITTED”)
Total Diff. = +372,203 (Clinton)
Total Pct. = +1.1009% (Clinton)
The above numbers are the actual vote totals from the NY Times web site, and compiled on my spreadsheet. The are up-to-date through 12:00 PM, June 4, 2008. Any errors are my own, and it would be appreciated if they would be pointed out, with support.
Further:
From my side-by-side Electoral Vote analysis of performance-based results:
Total Clinton Electoral Votes = 311
Total Obama Electoral Votes = 227
Total Electoral Votes needed to win the General Election = 270
Where it stands:
Total Obama PLEDGED DELEGATES = 1764 (includes Projected)
Total Clinton PLEDGED DELEGATES = 1640 (includes Projected)
Diff. Between candidates = 124
“Magic Number” for Nomination = 2118
Obama needs for Nomination = 354
Clinton needs for Nomination = 478
Total number of SUPERDELEGATES = 825 {they vote at the Convention ONLY)
Senator Obama, contrary to popular opinion has not won anything at this point, other than 1,764 PLEDGED DELEGATES, and since 2,118 are now needed for the Nomination, he is NOT the nominee in any shape or form. SUPERDELEGATES, and even PLEDGED DELEGATES, can change their minds at any time, and even the PLEDGED DELEGATES are not REQUIRED to vote for the specific candidate to whom they are pledged.

Hillary knows Obama won’t pick her as VP.. He just can’t by so many reasons and the most important one is that he will look like a kid to Hillary when they stand up together…
it is just a political game: Hillary doesn’t want VP because she doesn’t want to go down in Nov with Obama.. But she has to show Dems she is open to what it takes to unite Dems..
It will be a hot potato for Obama: if he picks Hillary as VP, he will be overshadowed by Clinton; if he doesn’t, he will find hard to unite Dems and will lose Nov mostlikely..

What was the outcome. MSNBC article, Rezko has known Obama since he entered politics and was involved in a 2005 real estate deal with the Democratic presidential candidate, although testimony barely touched on their relationship. Most of the focus was on shakedowns prosecutors say Rezko arranged when he was a top adviser to Blagojevich.
Neither Blagojevich nor Obama has been accused of wrongdoing.

Two words: Clinton Baggage
All this talk about the Clinton legacy, Clinton branding…well here it is:
Hillary Clinton’s legacy will be liar, cheat and delusional loser.
Bill Clinton’s legacy will still be Monica Lewinsky, a blue dress and rumors of continued infidelity while campaigning for his wife.
She will be remembered as the first woman who ran for office but blew it because she lied about sniper fire, cried when she was behind, and tried to cheat by changing every one of the campaign rules. Hillary will be remembered as the woman who mismanaged her campaign so badly she lost a certain nomination as a former first lady and wife of THE democratic president of many decades.
Bill Clinton will be rembered as an impeached president who couldn’t leave the ladies alone. One who lied to America about not having se_ _ al relations on TV and wagged his finger at the cameras. He will also be remembered for his explosive temper and now famous finger wagging when he is obvously lying again.

Obama is Carter II….And Carter would have been just as bad as Bush if he had only had a few more years….Actually his recent ill advised trip to the Middle East to negotiate with terrorists without official sanction is exactly the policy that Obama had….until he recently changed it into his new (I didn’t listen to Wright) policy.
Carter’s policies and judgement are flawed.
I believe that Obama needs Hillary…
Conventional wisdom and the Obama campaign think they will take their time and Hillary’s supporters will be there for them.
McCains website is flooded with Hillary supporters. They are offering to campaign for him. They are helping him to develop a strategy to bring more on board. There are questions about Roe v Wade….and foreign policy.
This was not an ordinary primary. These people are energized and they are headed to McCain in droves.
Obama can ignore the situation at his own risk. I really don’t think that he will get their votes without Hillary being on the ticket.
My Mom is 78 and has always voted Democratic….she wants to switch to register Republican so she can vote McCain. She didn’t like being characterized as a racist or an idiot because she is a Hillary voter. She is indignant watching the media feeding frenzy on Hillary. Which continued last night on CNN.
By the way she is neither a racist or an idiot.
I say take your time Obama maybe you don’t want Hillary on the ticket but every day is Christmas for McCain. Don’t count on these voters in November.

Posted by: Jackie | June 5, 2008, 3:28 am 3:28 am

It is common knowledge that there are standard conventions to choose running mates. So it is in election 2008. The alleged friction between the Clinton and Obama camp could have reached vitriolic levels that could have endangered the Democratic Party, but it did not. Guess what,it attracted and invigorated uncommitted voters in the history to stand up and be counted and make history. Where to now with all this talk about the Clinton camp not supporting the Obama camp? It’s all talk. It’s all politics. To be more accurate it’s politricks. The truth is the Clinton camp like the Obama camp are both democrats and like all good families have a little squabble then make up and go on , so what else is new.
Most people know that what is most likely to happen is that there will be a shifting of primary voting position by the majority of voters that were in the Clinton camp moving to the next level of commitment, to Presidential voting position , that is from individual level to party level, from a primary election 2008 polling statement to a declaration of party loyalty rallying around the Democratic Party Presidential Nominee for November 2008.
The polls made it appear that there was going to be a Clinton Administration in Election 2008.It never happened. It would appear that most of the polls polled a small section of a carefully chosen community to present a carefully cardiographed miniscule representation of so called voting trends
in Election 2008 to what would appear to be to scientifically engineer and manipulate poll figures to bolster previous statements of support for one candidate against the other.
True or false? You tell me, did the polls get it right 80% of the time or 65% of the time or maybe 43% of the time? Ask the pollsters, no one is really sure what the self ordained priests posing as self appointed political analysts sitting on their tripods in their temples of media spin were spouting when they made wild predictions of this and that and were wrong most of the time. Why?They relied on cooked up figures that were souped up to make one candidate look better than the other candidate in election 2008.
When things went contrary to the cited polling figures, then media spin kicked and kitchen sink strategy and mudslinging politics. But that is history now. It will be swept under the carpet or placed in a hired skip to dump all the vitriolic garbage in the dumping site graveyard of failed election campaigns.
The Democratic party is on the road to November 2008. One camp lost another camp won. So what? Both camps are democrats and everyone knows the party interests take precedence over individual interest.
The Obama camp has earned the right to choose their own VP. Convention rules in American politics have always been that way. Their choice must be respected because it will be the choice Obama camp and Barak Obama.Errol Smythe.

He actually DOES have a track record of working across the aisle with Democrats to create legislation unlike the FANTASY of bipartisanship Obama tries to create.
He also has a track record of going against his party for something he believes in..unlike Obama who doesn’t take a stand.
I believe he will have a bipartisan cabinet and hope he appoints Hillary to it.

It must be nice to be an older man and not to care how what you said is received. I’m looking forward to being that old one day.
I think Carter is right about America. My country tis of thee, Sweet Land of Liberty…

Everyone has been trying to suggest that race, ethnicity, etc. was not a factor in obama’s win, but Carter seems to suggest now that if Obama fails, it will be because of reasons other than his substance-lacking rhetoric and his changing views on how to handle many issues. I mean the guy literally said that people won’t vote for Obama because he “isn’t white enough”. I can’t see how an obviously-biased person can make what should be an unbiased decision such as who VP candidate should be.

Ditto, Carter is a moron. Obama lacks substance, and he will NOT get my vote unless Hillary’s on the ticket. Forget what the polsters are trying to tell you. there are a lot of us out there who are unhappy that popular votes don’t count but wacky caucuses do!

A joint ticket with Barak Obama and Hilary Clinton may not be a bad idea after all. But it is up to the Obama camp and Barak Obama to make the final decision. It is good to have an open mind and examine all options and choose what is best for the Democratic Party and what is good for the country. It may be a tough call to make. But then again it is just a everyday routine decision that one may expect of anyone aspiring for the high office of the President of the United States of America, because to be the President of the United States of America you have to be a great person loved and accepted by all Americans.
The great President John F Kennedy said “..ask not what your country can do for you, but what can you do for your country…”
Another great President Abraham Lincoln said “…united we stand, divided we fall…” and Ronald Reagan, a third great President said “…America is a shining beacon of democracy……”
Like many that originally considered that it wouldn’t work, because of the fierce exchange of words between the two camps, a joint ticket sounded out of the question. But then my opinion don’t matter. It don’t matter because it is not my call, it is the call of the Obama Camp and Barak Obama.
On reflection it will be good to heal the party. It will demonstrate that in primary elections , individuals may have different opinions but still have the grace to unite around a common purpose for the good of the people. Tin Election 2008 the Democratic Party people have spoken in the primaries by voting in their millions that they have a high opinion of both Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama .
Is a joint ticket a U-turn to rhetoric that would prefer the Obama Camp administration totally independent of the Clinton Camp and the Clinton Camp totally independent of the Obama Camp?Yes! An emphatic yes! Why? Because both Camps have excellent election and administration teams and best of all they belong to the same party. It will be good synergy for the party for the Obama Camp and the Clinton Camp to progress to the next level.
The media has been kind to both candidates . That is the maturity of American politics. Freedom of the press and freedom of speech, transparency and accountability.
Together Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton with John Edwards will make a formidable team. It is common knowledge that convention states that the winning candidate gets to choose his running mate. Public opinion and street wise talk on the streets suggests that it will be gracious for Barak to choose Hillary as a running mate.
In the past at the height of the primaries some negative press reports suggested that a joint ticket was not a good idea. I am guilty of thinking that it was not a good idea. But I would like to go on record for whatever it is worth and say that I salute Hillary Clinton for her tenacity, her courage, her patriotism, her great zeal and love for America, her love and commitment to Israel and her dedication to the high call of duty. Hillary as VP will bring a wealth of experience and advice for the Obama Administration.
To date Hillary’s has not publicly conceded. No one knows what is actually being said by both party camp loyals about the future direction of the party behind closed doors and what is being whispered by party camp die hards around coffee tables in restaurants , hastily convened crisis meetings etc. Just kidding!
Word on the street is that the party has to have a united front. To do this it may be recommended by persons close to Barak Obama that since Hillary’s name has been put forward for the VP slot it is respectfully suggested that he appoint her as his VP running mate and have John Edwards as Secretary of State.
The final decision will be up to Barak Obama who has the interests of uniting and healing the wounds of division of the Democratic party. That is an urgent priority and the “…urgent need of now..” and the “…fierce urgency of the hour…”.
It is hoped that this contentious hurdle of appointments of Hillary and John Edwards can unite and galvanize the party to be a political force to reckon worth.
No one doubts the patriotism , maturity and graciousness of Barak , Hillary and John who have the Democratic Party interest at heart and will do whatever it takes to unite the party around a common purpose with a view of November 2008 . Errol Smythe.

If hillary joins McCain it just proves what we already knew she will do anything to get back in the White House.Sen.Barack Obama doesn’t need to be watching his back all the time to see what she is up to.No matter what you want. The people in Washington know the Clintons, they don’t want them their because of their history. Even Clinton biographies have envisioned the thesis as evidence of Marxist or Socialist views and said her ideology was a brutal willingness to attack opponents and accumulate power in the Saul D.Alinsky style. David Brock in 1996 called her Alinsky’s Daughter. I don’t think even McCain want’s to deal with her we know Bill doesn’t?
