McAuliffe Yesterday: If Obama Gets to 2,118, Clinton Will Congratulate Him

“If Barack Obama reaches that number (2,118 delegates) today or tomorrow, do you believe that Senator Clinton is prepared to concede?” asked Meredith Vieira yesterday on the TODAY show.

“Yes, I think if Sen. Obama gets the number, I think Hillary Clinton will congratulate him and call him the nominee," replied Terry McAuliffe, co-chair of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

So what changed?

Nothing has changed, Jake. Obama got his number by adding the SD’s. Their votes are not counted until the convention. Have we forgotten that?

He not only went past 2118, but if you now give full votes to FL and MI and you give Hillary all that she wanted in MI he has the delegates. Time to put party first, as promised.

What happened:
I think Hillary has been masking her true self all along. She claims that shes doing this for the country, or for women, or for healthcare. I for one do not buy any of it. I feel her speech last night showed her true colors. She doesn’t care about the party or healthcare or womens right Hillary Clinton cares about Hillary Clinton. Now she is deystroing the party and backing Obama in a corner for her to have a vp slot.. I for one hope this is the end of HRC>>

Hey He Won fair in square. I have no doubt
Hillary Clinton will do the right thing and stand with the democratic party. Bring on McCain!!!

I also think if she is exposed to sunlight she will break down into ashes.

Posted by: Joe | June 4, 2008, 2:04 pm 2:04 pm

She is playing a political game, as is BHO. The name of the game is power and they both want it. time to let them both have it. He can have more…for now. HRC has my vote in November as a VP, as an Indepentdent or as a write in. Obama people just need to accept that isthe way many HRC supporters feel. Do they want their candidate as POTUS? Than take us along for the ride!

The longer she drags this out, the more naked her power grab becomes.
And no WAY Barack choses her as VP. No way.

voter and nobama
superdelegates arent going to change their minds… the democrats are now rallying around the nominee and that is all there is too it. There is nothing left for you to argue about here.
Expect supers to continue to endorse and continue to flock to him… even from hillarys supporters they will start to rally around him
teh simple fact is taht he not only recieved 2118 but he went over it and is now at 2154.
lets pretend there wont be more people endorsing obama, just for your sakes
lets pretend that wont happen and say hillary takes it all the way to the convention and gets florida and michigan seated in full… he now goes over that magic number too 2210
Barack Obama the democratic nominee

Clinton oughta think about her legacy.
Has she earned all this respect and support over the years as a historic first only to go down in history as the sorest loser?

Posted by: El_Pajaro | June 4, 2008, 2:08 pm 2:08 pm

What happened was that she decided that on this historic night for a black man in America to reach this far, a white woman would show no class and act as if the night was all about her. That’s what has happened since this race started. The Clintons are all about the Clintons.

Posted by: Tommy Thompson | June 4, 2008, 2:08 pm 2:08 pm

None of this matters. Hillary knows she will probably end up being the nominee when this tape of Michelle blasting the evil USA during a panel session with Louis Farrakhan’s wife comes out for all to see. Which of course puts her “For the first time in my adult lifetime I’m proud of my country” statement in FULL context – just as we knew what it meant all along!
Hillary start preparing for your campaign against McCain. Obama will be begging for the VP slot. Don’t give it to him.

joe i could not have said it better myself obama is in a no win situation if he picks hillary for vp he will be called weak if he doesnt pick her he will be blamed for splitting up the party i really feel for him but thanks to hillary and her supporters he is in that situation but hes smart he will make the right decision

Posted by: angie | June 4, 2008, 2:09 pm 2:09 pm

Posted by: angie | June 4, 2008, 2:11 pm 2:11 pm

Obama is strong, bright and he has guts. He will tell her she will not be his pick for V.P.
Now for her to be a head of a cabinet (maybe Healthcare or Education) he might go there, but V.P. never.

Posted by: Becky | June 4, 2008, 2:15 pm 2:15 pm

there will be no convention fight, and i dont think there will be a hillary VP offer.
Its not because she doesnt deserve it but because there is a tremendous amount of baggage that her adn her husband bring to the table.
It not only brings up all those clinton scandals, but it also could stir the GOP base into activity. THe one thing the republicans hate more then democrats, is the clintons.
and a lot of republicans may want to vote for obama, or may just be staying home because they dislike mccain… but make no mistake if they know a clinton is trying to get back into the white house they will get out and vote.
Obviously this is just a guessing game… but i think hillary will have another important job, and obama kind of eluded to it last night when he talked about health care and how it will succeed and hillary will be behind that effort.
The other thing is that, she is making a mistake by holding her voters hostage as it were…
she has been and continues to be divisive in her language and her actions. She could have last night congratulated him and not conceeded, said she still wanted some time to thinka bout it, but she didnt
she is holding her supportesr hostage as a bargaining chip because she knows that going back to the senate could be a very tough road.
Also like many have said, the vp isnt a big job.. unless your george bush and you let cheney have a massive amount of power, but usually thats not how VP’s act.
Do you think she would be happy being at his beck and call instead of taking a position where she essentially is a free agent and able to continue to speak her mind?

Clinton’s speech: Remarkable–what Jeff Toobin described as “deranged narcissism”.
This speech–its very essence–was predicted on May 23rd:
Why Hillary should not be VP:
From “Head of State”
Friday, May 23, 2008
Head of State: The Reasons That Hillary Should Not Be Vice President
Regarding Hillary Clinton as Barack Obama’s running mate:
Originally, this seemed to be a potentially plausible choice–and if presented in the following way, could turn her divisive campaign into a potential coup as a VP candidate. The thinking was the following:
Hillary has run a divisive campaign. Now, just as the nation should mend its divisions in favor a greater unity that would serve the greater needs of our country, so now they would explicitly put these divisions behind them, in the interests of the unity that this nation, after a bitter and divisive Administration, is so in need of. This would serve as a powerful and vibrant example of the very ability to unify that Obama both offers and represents.
However, this would require a candidate that was willing to take such a position of relative shared selflessness in the interests of a greater good. While the Vice Presidency certainly offers its honors (now far beyond the “warm pitcher” of John Vance Garner’s famous phrase) and positioning for later Presidential aspirations, such a plan would require the ability to think in terms of a shared effort based on the betterment of the nation, rather than in more grasping, combative and singular terms.

And after all of the classy, non-racist, party-unifying remarks that Obama’s esteemed “spiritual adviser” made about Hillary a few days ago, why on earth would she act any differently?

I agree with the vote assesment but Hillary did not win because she crapped on caucus states and that was her down fall. She hired the wrong staff and came out with the wrong message. I don’t think she knew how to use the internet untill 2 monthes ago when she started plugging her website.

bhrandon – I don’t see her having any role in Barack’s cabinet. She is just too divisive. And you’re right, why kick over the Republican anthill and get them riled up by putting her on the ticket?
The only reason she is doing what she is doing now is because the is incapable of admitting she is wrong. It is just not in her.

nobama
i think both hillary and obama have thier faults, i mean its hard to say what would have happened.
but i know this, we have been divided, and we are divided, but we arent hopelessly divided.
I think when hillarys people see her out there and hear what she says about the importance of electing a democrat i think we will see us close ranks
If hillary really wants to be VP and obama thinks there is no other way to close the wounds then i have no doubt it will be the course he takes.
but seriously like i said in my last post, i dont know why she woudl really want the VP spot.
I mean it does give her a nice leg up into the presidency in 8 years, but does she want to wait that long… of course if obama loses she gets a nice leg up for 2012.
it is going to be interesting to see. One thing is for certain the democrats elected two amazing candidates and if hillary hadnt made some fundamental errors this race would have turned out differently.
Anyway, i cant wait to see what she does, i want to go watch her speech in front of AIPAC tehy kind of double teamed mccain from what i understand.

Obama was told by the Dem leadership to not use all of the well documented problems, both past and present, against the Clintons.
McCain has no such limitation.
She would destroy the ticket. A huge chunk of the voters she’s carrying are too young to remember some or most of it and there is a lot currently. Especially since the grand jury testimony that doesn’t match her schedule just went to the washington post.
The Republicans have tons on the Clintons!!

Posted by: Lynne | June 4, 2008, 2:27 pm 2:27 pm

Don’t forget, with the Clintons, you get two for one.
Talk about going off message with her on the ticket. All the focus would be on them, and not on Obama.

Posted by: Texas Voter | June 4, 2008, 2:29 pm 2:29 pm

She needs to publicly concede sooner than later or else Obama will have enough ammo to rebuff her Veep campaign. Now he must put her on the ticket for party unity. If she keeps up her combative rants about getting the “most votes” etc., she will lose her leverage.

Posted by: matt | June 4, 2008, 2:32 pm 2:32 pm

What changed is that Hillary decided to get the last drop of blood out of Obama. Other than that, her “me first” attitude never changes. Why the Obama campaign thinks that putting her on the ticket MIGHT change her is beyond me. Don’t believe what she says. Believe what she does.

Joe:
Were you on a desert island when the Pfleger story broke?
According to a 2004 interview with the Chicago Sun Times, Obama stated that he had three spiritual mentors/advisers (whichever you prefer): Wright, Pfleger, and Meeks.
He specifically credited Pfleger for helping to keep “my moral compass set.”
And you’re right, Obama did not say it himself. Just like whatever Michelle actually said in her infamous video won’t be something he said either.

Lynne;
What is it about Obama groupies that makes them automatically respond to comments with a reference to Bill or Hillary Clinton?
With Hillary Clinton out of the contest, where will Obama get his positions and ideas?
And, how will Obama minions respond without Hillary or Bill to compare to?
Tough times ahead in Obama world…
Or, as some would say, “sheesh”…

Posted by: Jayhawk | June 4, 2008, 2:37 pm 2:37 pm

Hillary thinks she is holding her supporters. She wants them to visit her website to see how strong her grip is on them. She reminds me of Jim Jones when he had his followers drink the laced drink. She and Bill should make a graceful exit, But, she won’t. Why ? Because she has changed the rules and done pretty much what she wanted from day one. From the lies of sexism, her and Bill’s racism, Ferraro’s lies Rendell’s racism and the list goes on. After all that she still didn’t win. With all the baggage she and Bill bring to the table, who wants them? Now she has her surrogates Lanny Davis and Bob Johnson sniffing at Obama’s crumbs, trying to bully him into picking her for the vp. How low do you want to go Hillary?

Posted by: yes She can! | June 4, 2008, 2:42 pm 2:42 pm

Jayhawk,
I gues you are refering to the divisive gossip being distributed by Robert Novak, conservative columnist.
Here is what Michelle Obama herself said:
“I think the world of Hillary Clinton. Particularly, as a woman, having watched her go through a lot of what I might be going through, and doing it with a level of grace, and raising a phenomenal daughter, which — I have two girls — and I know how hard just in the little bit of exposure I’ve had to this what she’s had to deal with, and what she’s accomplished. So that being said, you know, there is no way that I would say absolutely no to one of the most successful and powerful and groundbreaking women on this planet.”
(Political Punch, May 19)
What she DID say was that the eventual presidential nominee would have earned the right to choose his/her VP.
Next time you should consider the source before buying into this kind of divisive rumours.

sandyB
when i say that she is holding her voters hostage i dont mean to say that the voters themselves are hostages…
i know that sounds strange and a little like a loop d loop but let me try to explain
she is using language that keeps her voters next to her, and no doubt had she said obama is the nominee im going to suspend my campaign yada yada yada whatever else her voters would continue to stand with her,
but she isnt giving them the feeling that they should start to listen to obama she is in fact holding you hostage .
well i guess i cant explain it any better and i know it is just going to upset you further and im sorry for that, what i do know is that hillary wants to be a part of this and she is going to have a very good if not great political future.
Obama and her are going to be barn storming together you can bet that, and i think at that time her supporters may start to listen to obama and actually realize that he isnt such a bad guy after all.
What is unfortunate and what i think we lost site of in this race is this..
in the beginning we as americans as democrats saw HISTORY… wow… the first women president how cool could this be? I know i was jubilant at the prospect
and the other side, wow, the first african american president, how cool would that be?
and so we started to cast our ballets and it wasnt a vote against obama or a vote against clinton it was voters saying…. WHO DO WE PICK FOR OUR FUTURE???
i mean what is americas future going to be..what will our history be
and somewhere we went beyond that, somewhere in the middle everything became muddled in attacks…
I personally and i know a lot of you wont agree but thats ok, as a hillary supporter i thought she was attacking unfairly and i became too weighted with it, i started to be turned off from what she was saying and her case and i started to listen to obama, and thats how i came to obamas court
but thats the problem right there, at that moment it was no longer me saying WHAT PATH SHOULD AMERICA TAKE it became negative… attacking, dirty politics, all those other key words you want to throw in.
and i ended up turning on hillary, and maybe i should be ashamed of myself, and maybe you should be ashamed of yourself, and maybe we as democrats should all be ashamed of ourselves that we went from voting for our future, to voting against the other candidate and it became deeply ingrained and finger pointing and it was no longer about future, but about how the other side was acting or being or what they were sayign and oh they are soooo dirty…
and now we are here, and now we have these deep divides…
and i think we will be able to heal a lot of them and a lot of them we wont, and tahts too bad. Because i think the democrats this year have all the right answers and the mccain answers scare me to death.
well whatever happens this year a women came very close to being the nominee for the democrats and an african american did become the nominee for the democrats
I cant wait to see what they do together next. I hope that the true democrats and not the ones that pose on here that are really republicans but true democrats relax in the coming weeks and reflect inward and make the really tough decision that is am i so upset that i must vote against obama, or that hey you know what mccain is offering is really not my cup of tea and we need to band together and be united.
I will say this, i am a democrat and even though i became increasingly jaded towards hillary clinton had she been the nominee i would have voted for her… i would have bitched about it but i would have voted for her

Posted by: jeep395 | June 4, 2008, 2:50 pm 2:50 pm

one thing is certain all this hatred needs to find a way to disperse i think obama people can stop attacking the hillary people and starting find a way to have some common ground with hillary supporters
if obama had lost we would be pissed too, what we need to do is figure out a way to bring everyone back into the fold.
Talk about issues instead of finger pointing, talk about mccain
real democrats will be able to have these rational discussions and will be able to come to terms with their anger
teh rest of these people are republican sheep
like geevil
no true democrat would vote for the things that john mccain is proposing out of spite
the dnc did the best job they could, the first vote was unanimous and the second vote had an overwhelming majority, including 5 pledge hillary supporters
the good thing that came out of that meeting was that the states got what THEY asked for and the candidates had to compromise
dont be mistaken about that

Posted by: bhrandon | June 4, 2008, 2:53 pm 2:53 pm

Maybe Obama can ask the “57″ states if Hillary should be on the ticket.
Maybe Obama can sit down and talk to Iran and tell them they are bad. Especially since he thinks because Iran is small – they are not a threat.
This is the kind of guy who will may be running the country. What a moron.
Also, you pick a pastor and or spiritual advisor because you believe in them. You believe in what they preach. That is why this is an issue. The guy (Obama) had one lucky guess with going to war – other than that his judgement scares me.

Senator McCain is respectful, honest and honorable. All the things that Obama does not have. Senator McCain has is proud of being an American and will never take any steps to bring harm to America. Obama is ashamed to be an American and has pledged allegience to the nation of Africa. Senator McCain is a centrist while Obama is the most liberal senator you can find. Senator McCain has reached across the aisle to pass laws. Obama was just figuring out where he needs to sit leave alone know what he is voting for.
One of these alone is enough to make me want to vote for McCain. Hillary would have been my best choice but without her, I will settle for McCain. There is no other choice for me and I am a Democrat.

Actually El Parajo;
A source is a source is a source.
Regardless of what she may have said in damage control at a later date, the fact remains that Michelle Obama did not publicly deny the Robert Novak assertion.
And, if you really believe that Michelle Obama has even a hint of respect for Hillary Clinton, you need to pay more attention as the events occur instead of googling a phrase or two in an effort to substantiate a position.

Voter
so you do not think obama is respectful honest, or honorable? Was cheating on his wife after her terrible car accident honorable? Was not voting for the GI bill something he should have voted for honorable?
I think you are wrong in your assumption that john mccain would do no harm to america, by his own definition that he would not use diplomacy but would indeed and in fact use force to get his agenda across, and the simple fact that he does not see the war in iraq as the facade that it is and that he wants to continue the occupation, or that he wants to go to war with iran
you do not think that these will make america less safe, that he is unwilling to use diplomacy suggests that he is a war mongering psychotic that has no regard for the horrors of war but instead thinks just like bush thought that he could use brute force to get his point across, and we all knwo how taht is turning out.
i dont know where you are getting your tlaking points but obama hates america? LOL
and he has pledged his allegiance to africa?? LOL
do you also believe that he was sworn in on the khoran? (or however you spell it?)
Mccain may have been liberal but with his voting record as of late 95% in line with bush i dare say that he is not as liberal as he once was, he is not the john mccain of 2000 and you will see that in his speeches, he can claim he works cross isle but he has embraced the republicans and their agenda, and he has embraced bush and his agendas
Obama voted against teh war… i call taht a pretty smart move, one that wasnt very popular at the time, but one that a lot of americans felt was the right one, and now even more americans feel that it was teh correct move.
that war is a cancerous sore on this country and mccain wants to continue it. It is appalling…
Hillary would never vote for mccain in a thousand years, mccain says hes tough on terror, and yet hes funded by some of the most terrible rogue terrorist regimes around the world
he says he woudl never talk to hamas! and yet you can do a you tube search and see for yourself that he indeed once was willing to have these talks, that was mccain of 2000, and he is no longer that
he has transcended into the dark beast that carries and bears the evilness and horrible promises of this current administration
no thanks

Its hard to say exactly what happened. Especially as her speech was sooooooo bullish. But I think maybe someone, most probably her husband but could be someone else, reminded her of how powerful a position she is in. BUT the problem is I think that the power of her position will ebb away from her if she waits too long and the party will turn against her.

Nothing has changed, various and sundry individuals keep speaking for her.

Senator Obama has done more to destroy the Democratic Party than any man in history. He is not a democrat. He is a socialist/marxist/communist. Rational and educated peoople know that if they have done thorough research. Most Obama supporters didn’t look further than his dancing, prancing and using fancy words. He is superficial at best. He is an empty shell of a man at worst. He is a pathatic candidate.

You all have seen that her numbers in NY now look like she may lose New York…
she’s got a lot of work to do and last night didn’t help.
She had so much to gain by being the person she professes to be…have you seen half of her staunch supporters today not being able to still bite their tongues because they are so disappointed in the fact that she just proved to so many people what all her supporters have been fighting against…
the whole idea that this has never been about issues…it’s been about Hillary
I feel for everyone who was taken.
Rendell did an interview today and you can see he is one unhappy dude about her maneuver last night.
Hillary Rosen’s article today…oof.
her whole team from NY…that were the biggest fighters… …angry she would threaten the issues and/or ask people to help make a decision…
Rangel saying I think I need to call her directly.
They all most be thinking when does this train end…even more than the rest of us.
You hear the superdelegates she threatened if they switch over before she “tells” them they can.
all in the name of her position.
Yesterday I was kind of getting “ok” with her as VP and she had to go and screw it up …again.
(I stole that line from a Clinton supporter watching with a bunch of other Clinton supporters last night).

Mary
when do you come back to earth?

Posted by: dl | June 4, 2008, 7:36 pm 7:36 pm

Voter,
you are right.
Nothing changed, until Obama got delegetes from SD.

If Obama gets 3000 delegates, plus
endorsements by Rodney Alan Rippy.
Gary Coleman, O. J., Butterfly McQueen,
and Sly Stone….will she consider
stepping down?…..depends on what
Bill says. He still runs the carnival.
It ain’t over ’til the ol’ dog dies.

No one is disputing that Obama will be the nominee….Now we get to see if he is a “uniter”
This is where the talk and the walk are revealed.
My experience with Obama supporters on the blogs has not been positive.
McCain will be moving to the middle…Some of us are centrist…From the view of leftist Chicago this election has shown me I’m not sure if that’s the “change” that America needs.

Denial, much?

How John Sidney McCain III Could Theoretically Beat Barack Hussein Obama:
He won’t have to even try. McCain will win this election now that Barack Hussein gave up Florida and Michigan.
