McCain, Clinton and Race

A weird moment in ABC News’ Ron Claiborne’s interview with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Good Morning America this morning…

McCain praised Obama "for running a very effective, and a campaign that has attracted a lot of people to his support. I think he deserves credit for that." (Only slightly more sparing in his praise than Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, gave the presumptive Democratic nominee.)

Asked about the historic achievement of Obama’s candidacy — the first African-American to be nominated for president on a major-party ticket — McCain seemed bizarrely tone deaf.

"I congratulated Sen. Obama not because of any reason except that he has run a very effective campaign and he’s done a very admirable job," McCain said.

Watch Ron’s interview HERE.

Likewise, I was quite baffled that in her speech last night, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, made zero mention of what Obama had achieved in this way.

Whatever you think of Obama and his politics, this is an historic moment.

After Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was sworn in as the first female Speaker of the House, Rep. Adam Putnam, R-Florida, a member of the Republican leadership, spoke quite eloquently about how moved he was, especially as the father of three daughters. President Bush and House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, also praised the moment where the country would say "Madam Speaker." It didn’t make me think any of them were going to be any weaker as political combatants against the policies and principles Pelosi stands for.

For an African-American to win the Democratic presidential nomination is an achievement you’d think someone born in 1936 would be able to appreciate.

Relax.
He is just a presumptive nominee.
If he can pull off the general election, then and only then can we get all worked up about what he is.

OBAMA’S PROMISE: A new kind of politics — not politics as usual.
THE REALITY: SOSDD

Posted by: A | June 4, 2008, 1:12 pm 1:12 pm

I agree. I think the right thing to do would be to recognize that achievement. Now anything that either one of them says is going to be looked upon as not sincere…almost like when your mom makes you apologize to someone…you just go through the motions.

I’m with you Jake,on this one
It is a great accomplishment.
Obama has had to and will continue to transcend race.
Though it will only be expounded upon as a wedge issue for hate, as you will see posted here.(as you can see per Freedom is’s never enough)

Obama — the chamelian candidate.

Posted by: A | June 4, 2008, 1:17 pm 1:17 pm

Obama should be congratulated.
Why? Because Obama has accomplished more than any other socialist in America has done since George McGovern.

Posted by: USmarine0331 | June 4, 2008, 1:18 pm 1:18 pm

His really big accomplishment so far is being able to bamboozle such a large amount of people with no resume whatsoever, just with talk.
This will go down in history as the biggest marketing ploy/scam and collective hypnosis ever.

McSame is a prehistorical creature, his health records for few years was 1200 pages whre he has had any kind of cancers. He has no understanding of the 21st century politics. He is older than Coca-Cola, so nobody knows what his IQ is and his level of education, so no surprise from his side. God save America from McSame.

As a black person myself, I do not ligitimate Obama’s sucess based on his own merits. He got a free pass from the press and tarnished the reputation of his opponent as well as got pushed forward by the Democratic Establishment because of the color of his skin. Obama is an affirmation action candidate, no more and certainly no less.

I can understand McCain’s refusal. He refused to vote for a MLK Holiday.
But Clinton’s refusal is appalling. Her campaign was just as historic and amazing.
The World is watching! They should be ashamed.

spock: “None of the Libs congratulated Judge Thomas, (they tried to destroy him), No lib did it for Colin Powell or Condi Rice or Alberto Gonzales all firsts in their positions and brilliant at their positions and all picked by Pres. Bush No the libs attack them and called them names beyond belief!! !!”
Judge Thomas is notorious for remaining virtually silent during Supreme Court precedings. He is clearly a man out of his depth. If there ever was an affirmative action appointment, he is it.
Condoleeza Rice played a role in selling the Iraq War on false pretenses. Remember her “mushroom cloud” warnings, helping to scare the nation into war? She also ignored the memo entitled “Bin Laden determined to strike inside the US” in August, 2001. Bush was clearing brush at the time in Texas.
Alberto Gozalez was a total incompetent. He promoted the use of torture, disgracing America’s reputation, a reputation built up over decades, for respecting the Geneva Convention. Torture evidence contributed to the false allegations that Sadaam Husein was involved in 9/11. Gonzalez resigned in disgrace last year.
Yet spock describes this rogues gallery as people that have been “brilliant” in their positions.

Posted by: Dan S | June 4, 2008, 1:29 pm 1:29 pm

Perhaps since Obama has transcended race and both Senator McCain and Clinton have worked with him in the Senate that they really didn’t see him as the “black guy”. To them, he is just a fellow senator.

relax?
it is a moment in history, a moment that we as americans, all americans, can be proud of.
This was a historic campaign and this is a historic win. Obamas campaign has broke through so many barriers and set all kinds of records.
Pretend like this isnt a big deal if you want, but this is a moment in time everyone can look back on at some point in the future and say
“that was the first time we ever”
so no freedom we wont relax and for you to diminish that, and for mccain to diminish that, and for hillary to diminish that is just stupid.
Condelezza Rice congratulated him.. EVEN BUSH congratulated him..
I am sorry that for you freedom this isnt important and that this isnt historical and that you fear by giving him that credit you somehow validate him as a worthy opponent.
Im sorry you need to continue to diminish him and his many achievements. I think its yours and mccains first strategic error

perhaps ‘the historic reference’ was left out because obama is NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN. a historic event for a person of mixed race yes, but perhaps not even, since most americans are mixed race. while i agree that crediting him for his accomplishments is unmistakable true, redefining his genetics in an attempt to define him as African American as the media is determined to define him is incorrect.

McCain doesn’t have to fawn over Obama….millions of us don’t. I hope Hillary and McCain have private conversations about it….they have a decent relationship….would love them to put their heads together for a McCain 4 years, Hillary 4 years plan.

Posted by: A | June 4, 2008, 1:42 pm 1:42 pm

Tone deaf is the least of it. His speech last night was a disaster. His weaknesses as a campaigner — kept in the background thus far due to the Dem primary battle — will now move into the spotlight. He’ll make mistakes like this, reporters will call him on it (no more BBQ for you!), and he’ll get pissy in response.
It’s going to be a very long hot summer for the Senator from Arizona.

Sonia, JFTR, Kennedy has been criticized for that ever since. It was even mentioned during last night’s coverage, all these years later.

I truly congratulate all the Obama supporters, especially African Americans for their historic moment.
They have to feel so proud.
Obama is charming and a good speaker but I don’t place alot on either of those qualities.
Since Hillary has lost I will do as I have said all along and support McCain.
I urge all the Hillary supporters who have said they will not vote for Obama, to contibute to McCain ASAP.
McCain is not young, or flashy or a great speaker—but I trust his strength, his patriotism, his experience, and I appreciate his humility.
I do not believe McCain will be like Bush. I trust his word more than I trust Obama’s.
Please contribute to McCain. Hillary can run again in 2012.

Why does everybody try to throw race into it. Blacks and liberal news are the ones who injected the race card into this race so far

Posted by: alpig | June 4, 2008, 1:45 pm 1:45 pm

So let me get this right, you are going to call us racist when we bring up the fact that Obama is black and his race has helped him in this election (AKA Geraldine Ferraro) yet when Clinton and Mccain make no mention of the historic nature of his candidacy (he is black) you are going to insinuate lack of racial sensitivity? You can’t have it both ways.

Since Obama’s pastor issue came to surface, he showed weaker and weaker..
He won only 3 states for the last ten primaries…
Dems is gambling on AA brothers and younger voters…the GE is more uncertain than ever.. not mentioning how important role the frustrated Hillary’s supporters will play…

Posted by: True Truth | June 4, 2008, 1:46 pm 1:46 pm

spock brings up a great point that can’t be overlooked.
We didn’t hear any congratulating of the accomplishments of these black people. Let alone a black female in a first time position.
Did we hear any noise of this in the news? No. They followed the rhetoric the democrats were doing by trying to smear these people.

Posted by: Freedom | June 4, 2008, 1:47 pm 1:47 pm

As an independent who voted for Obama, I can safely say that whether it’s McCain or Obama who wins in November, at this point I think I’d be satisfied either way. The sad part is that while I consider them both to be honorable men worthy of our respect, they’re going to spend the next five months tearing each other apart. Not because they want to, but because they have to. It’s called a “campaign.”

Posted by: Jim | June 4, 2008, 1:48 pm 1:48 pm

Cindy in NC…I contributed $40.44 last night to McCain campaign. Money talks and there were many more, like me all going to donate to McCain. DEMS WILL GET WORD OF McCAIN FUNDRAISING FROM HILLARY SUPPORTERS…..I don’t even want Hillary near that ticket…she would never get the stink off her.
Can’t wait for the Michelle tape with “whitey” coments the Reps have under lock and key until Oct. It will be too late for Hillary by then, but that’s OK. KEEP OABMA AWAY FROM THE WH!

as a hillary supporter i recognize and admire obamas many acomplishments. he ran a brilliant campaign. what is most impressive to me, is the the number of young people that obama inspired to become engaged, and energized by the political process-now that is historic.

Putnam spoke after Pelosi had been sworn in- that is, after the national election putting Democrats in charge of Congress.
Before the 2006 elections, when Republicans were trying to win, they weren’t pointing out the historic nature of Pelosi’s possible Speakership.
The last thing McCain wants to do now, or Republicans wanted to do then, is point out a vote for your opponent would be part of a wonderful historic event.
McCain has to run against Obama as a man, not against Obama the historic black figure.

Give me a break, Hillary was eloquent, she was complimentary and she noted the historic achievments of Barrack’s campaign. The only thing she didnt do was concede. Which any intellegent person would not do at this point. She is staying for power… that is what politics is all about.
Hillary is not going to disappear into the woodworks. Sorry guys, not gonna happen.

Obama and his minions have been talking, and continue to talk, from both sides of their mouths. They talk about transcending race, to be color blind. On the other hand, they want at every single instance to make sure you see his color. Not to mention 90% black electorate voted for him.
What will they say when McCain chooses Bobby Jindal?

The plan for an Obama administration is to raise taxes, raise taxes, and raise taxes.
The Obama plan to fix Social Security—raise taxes.
The Obama plan to fix Medicare—raise taxes.
The Obama plan to provide prescription drugs—raise taxes.
The Obama plan for reduced cost of college—raise taxes.
And if that doesn’t work, Obama will raise taxes again, and again, and again.
If you think gasoline and energy prices are putting a drain on your personal taxes, just wait till the Obama tax plans take effect.
The tax man cometh…and his name is Barack Hussein Obama…

I thought Obama was gracious in his comments last night. I wish the bloggers had even a smidge of that! While McCain and Clinton couldn’t muster up much nicety, Condoleeza Rice seemed to find words: “The United States of America is an extraordinary country,” she said. “It is a country that has overcome many, many, now years, decades, actually a couple of centuries of trying to make good on its principles. And I think what we are seeing is an extraordinary expression of the fact that ‘We the people’ is beginning to mean all of us.” I don’t agree with her policies, but that was classy.

More than just raise taxes. In his speech last night, Barack Obama claimed it is past time that the federal government takes the profits of private oil companies and spends it as he sees fit.
When is that ever a role of the national government? Never.
Welcome to the U.S.S.A All Hail Obama!

Eddie Allen,
Earth to Eddie…Earth to Eddie…
If you don’t think Barack Hussein Obama will raise your taxes as President, you haven’t been paying attention to Obama speeches and you don’t understand the past history of how Democrat majorities perform in American government.
The only ones inventing anything about Obama/Democrat tax increases are those who say it won’t happen.
If you consider just a fragment of what Obama has promised in government programs, and you can understand that these programs will cost money, then you can understand that Obama would raise your taxes significantly…and everyone else’s.
By the way, this isn’t a caucus, so Obama supporters can’t intimidate taxes for anyone here on the blogs.
Just listen to your messiah’s speeches on how he would raise taxes.
Obama will raise taxes.
Both mine and yours.

What’s with the historic moment stuff. It’s a big big big deal if you have lived your life through the prism of race. I have not. He’s just another left wing liberal who will more than likely lose the election. People really need to move on. I thought it no big deal that Pelosi became the Speaker. Neither one of these issues have helped our nation or will help our nation. Last time I checked, gas has gone up $1.50 a gallon since Madam became Speaker. Can’t imagine how much more it will go up if BO is President.

Huh- so you obama cult followers think that after obama encouraged his followers to trash Hillary Clinton in some of the most demeaning, profane and ugly ways, she should start singing praises for him huh? Not only has obama encouraged and Never discouraged his Internet blogger supporters to spew hate continuously for the past 5 months, he hasn’t apologized to Clinton for the latest remarks made by a Catholic priest from the pulpit of obama’s (yes we know – he has departed Ha Ha Ha) church.
Sure he needs clinton right now because he can’t win the election without her. Now he is making sweet noises and being so concilliatory. I hope she does to him what he did to her after the ABC debate where she stomped his butt – the next day he gave her his “magical middle finger” and you obama supporters screamed and shouted and applauded him to no end.
No don’t expect anything from Clinton for obama – she has so much more class in her little pinkie than this hypocritical, arrogant, self-serving person ever will have if he lives to be 10000 years old. To obama from Clinton – I say say screw you obama like to have tried to screw Clinton. You’ll never get my vote bucko – If Clinton is not on the ballot, I vote McCain. This is my and millions of Clinton’s power over the hating obama followers – you’ll never get our votes.

Good comment Irish Gal;
After 34 years as a Democrat, I changed my affiliation to “independent.”
The most significant of the gas/energy price hikes have taken place since the Pelosi-Reid-Dean regime took power in Congress.
If Obama is added to the equation, prices and taxes will skyrocket to astronomical levels in an even shorter time.
The Great Depression will pale in comparison to an Obama Society.

Geesh, give him a break. We’ve learned that any white person who mentions Obama’s ethnicity is a racist. Now the media is critical because McCain and Clinton aren’t pointing out the obvious in regards to Obama. I’d say Clinton has learned the hard way and McCain has been paying attention.

USMarine
So you are anti-socialist. Congrats to you.
I presume that means you are ONLY anti-socialist about Obama’s programs to provide free education to returning vets of Iraq war, to provide affordable income based college education to all Americans, to provide affordable income based health care to all Americans, but you are supportive of the Bush regime which just gave $100 billion to bail out the investment banks who bet too much on bad bets in the real estate market.
Of course they were amateurs who were allowed into the deep water by McCain’s financial advisor, the lobbyist for the United Bank of Scotland. The UBS just advised their employees not to visit the USA because they may be arrested on fraud charges arising from their predatory lending practices. You are fine with giving $100 billion to the investment banks, right? Just nothing to returning vets, like Bush says, he is going to veto the new GI bill. He is against the GI Bill for Iraq war vets because he fears that the folks in uniform will not reenlist if they can get a home loan and 4 years of college.
Way to go there, you anti-socialist. I hope you are proud that you are keeping up on your right wing slogans.

The price of gas is also changed by the value of the dollar, which has lost 1/2 its value since Bush’s “permanent campaign’ and the fake war in Iraq started.
Since Aug 2007 the value of the dollar has dropped like a stone.

Jayhawk
You are blaming the wrong people. Bush vetoed any attempts to change policy.

Brilliantly said Jake,
McCain will not loose any votes over this, but if he was true to the core concerning his patriotic heart for America he would have praised the American public because they chose the Democratic candidate that ran the best campaign irregardless of his race and transcended the racial barriers of the past. He would have expressed his pride in the country because of this as well as his confidence that America will again choose the candidate with the best ideas and qualification regardless of his race or AGE!!
What a missed opportunity for Mr Mcain!

Mary
Please give specifics. You are blathering.
Obama had nothing to do with Katrina.
That was Bush’s friend with no qualifications, in FEMA and Bush.

Where do you stand on waterboarding prisoners?
Neither Clinton nor Obama approve.
McCain is ok with requiring prisoners to give testimony against themselves and to torture prisoners by waterboarding them like witches were by the Puritans, which is against the Geneva convention for treatment of prisoners, and against the Constitution.
You’ll get over it. She will get to be a supreme court Justice if Obama wins.

Bwahahahaha….how have things gone
under Bush? A disaster at every turn.
Let’s give the Republicans another
chance! Not their fault they’ve squandered all your children’s and grandchildren’s money for nothing.

Thanks Irish Gal. I bet you are way under 65.
Did you know that most independents over 65 and a majority of conservatives over 65 are opposed to McCain? They know what it is like to go to the pantry and forget why they made the trip.

A
Chameleon is spelled thus.
Flexibility in responding to circumstances is more effective than pretending you are always right: the Bush way to international disaster.
Read the McClellan book. Bush makes up his mind and it is the job of his staff to prove him right.
Scientists and engineers in NASA were forbidden from publicizing the facts of global warming.
Chameleons can respond to reality with appropriate gestures. In Bush’s case, no facts matter, once he makes up his mind, such as it is.
He is like the computer Hal in the movie. Once Bush gets the “prime directive” you cannot get him to see what’s in front of him.

The whiners who oppose Obama because of his nutty minister are merely seeking an excuses to extend the failed Bush era. Hey, white voters (like me) and Republicans voters (unlike me) have for years taken marching orders without question from bizare ministers like Falwell, Hagee, Robertson, Haggerty too many others to mention. Lets look at what is in a candidate’s heart and mind, not what a silly preacher says.

Quite partisan to attack McCain for not pointing out someone’s race. Unfortunately, race may raised only when it suits liberal Obama’s purposes. And when it isn’t so duly raised, you’re a racist. America is too smart for that level of logic.

Irish Gal,
Any chance you can compare and contrast the point of view of the candidates, or are you one of those right wingers we see on TV who can only shout unsubstantiated personal vituperation?

Posted by: bruce becker | June 4, 2008, 5:21 pm 5:21 pm

Hello. Hillary Clinton was not born in 1936! She’s not seventy-two, but sixty. I guess someone is taking liberties again with the facts about Hillary Clinton . . .

Posted by: katrina | June 4, 2008, 5:37 pm 5:37 pm

Thanks Tommy T. I agree. We ought to judge the candidates on what they say, but some people say, we become like the company we keep.
Therefore I assert for those less rational than you:
I don’t think his former minister is nutty. I think he was angry and justifiably so.
For example
The CIA trained bin Laudin and worked side by side with him and his team in Afghanistan for ten years.
That is a pure fact. Undeniable.
Your tax dollars at work, training terrorists.
That is an example of the phrase grumpy Rev Wright used two days after 9-11, when he said “OUR chickens have come home to roost”.
That’s “our” chickens. Yours, mine, ours. OUR tax dollars at work, OUR CIA, training terrorists.
If YOUR tax dollars and YOUR CIA trained the person bin Laudin, who admitted he commanded the operation which resulted in 9-11, then your/our/my chickens DID indeed, come home to roost. We all eat the karma for US policy, even the ‘innocent’.
Not only that, but shortly before 9-11, a retired high ranking CIA official, a Rockefeller, confessed on national public radio, that he had personally arranged to overthrow the legitimate regime of Iran and installed the Shah, himself. The Iranians were angry about that. The Shah stayed in power for decades, through the use of a spy system which was brutal. When the Shah left Iran and came to the US for medical treatment, his government was overthrown by the Ayatollahs who said of the US, that we are in league with the Devil. Remember?
That is another chicken. That Iranian chicken who noticed our techniques were not only undemocratic but supported a despotic ruler for a lower price of oil, is now buying a nuclear plant from the Russians, which when it is completed will generate enough fissionable material to make one A-bomb the size of Nagasaki every two week.
So let us not pretend that our hands are clean.
Our chickens are all over the middle east and now and then they do apparently come home to roost.
I could go on. I wont bore you.
I can deal point by point with all of Rev Wright’s screaming. It was angry sure enough but it was accurate in every single regarding the bin Laudin chickens. Most of what Rev Wright says in the version that plays every night on TV, is quoting a US white Ambassador. The white US ambassador said, OUR CHICKENS HAVE COME HOME TO ROOST.
Rev Wright was quoting him.
I know he is portrayed as off the wall by the TV spin guys. Half them dont know that Rockefeller overthrew the Iranian government or that he did it to keep the Brits in their sweetheart oil deal.
That chicken came home to roost during Carter’s term.
It was spun that Carter was weak on foreign affairs but we know now that Bush I was involved in treason selling missiles to the Iranian terrorists in return for helping Bush win the election by making Carter look weak. How do we know? We put the salesman who arranged the deal between Bush and the Ayatollah in the slammer.
He lives in Maryland.

Quote..
McCain is not young, or flashy or a great speaker—but I trust his strength, his patriotism, his experience, and I appreciate his humility.
I do not believe McCain will be like Bush. I trust his word more than I trust Obama’s.
Quote
McCains Humility???
Trust his word??
The man has been in Washington for 30 years…Humility and trust have never been part of John McCains personality.
You really should look into his record, not his TV personna..

Okay, okay, the age reference was to McCain, not Clinton, who preceded the reference.

Have you ever heard of privilege?
Have you ever heard of entitlement?
I’d say when those ceilings are broken, the usual inhabitants aren’t exactly thrilled that their club has to be more inclusive.
Why would anyone be surprised by this? I am glad BHO’s nomination and candidacy are breaking down all the denial there is out there about race, religion, class and gender. Maybe we can finally have honest conversations on what reality really is.
