McCain Compares Obama to Jimmy Carter
ABC News’ Bret Hovell Reports: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., opened up a new line of attack on presidential rival Barack Obama Monday night – tying the Illinois Democrat to former President Jimmy Carter, a one term president who battled low approval ratings.
"Senator Obama says that I’m running for [President George W.] Bush’s third term," McCain told NBC News’s Brian Williams, alluding to a line of attack that Democrats have launched against the Arizona Republican. "It seems like Barack Obama is running for Jimmy Carter’s second."
The idea that Obama is similar to Carter is one that has been percolating in conservative circles for a few weeks. And earlier Monday at a fundraiser in Richmond, Va., McCain backer Lawrence Eagleburger brought it to the Senator’s attention by directly suggesting he make that comparison.
"I do have a suggestion," the former Secretary of State said to a room full of McCain donors. "It occurs to me that the Democratic candidate does remind me a great deal of Jimmy Carter. And perhaps we should make that identification stick."
McCain, it seems, agreed. When asked in the NBC News interview why he made the comparison, McCain criticized Obama’s economic plan as being like the former President’s.
"Because spend, spend, tax, spend. He’s got a proposal that will… raise spending by $1.4 dollars over 10 years, there’s no way to pay for those programs," McCain said.

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
There’s no way to pay for those programs… said the Republican.
Um, it seems to me the vast majority of our national debt has been racked up under Republicans. At least $4 trillion of our total $9 trillion current total was Bush’s red ink, and much of that during six years of Republican control of Congress.
For a Republican to criticize anyone from any other party for coming up with ideas we can’t afford is simply laughable.
Maybe those guys really aren’t so bright. I know they like to pretend they are the fiscally responsible party, but it seems like some of them actually believe it.

Besides, Bush has made Carter look pretty good.
Carter had a failed presidency to be sure, but he’s rarely if ever considered among historians when debating the ‘worst’ ever.
My guess is Bush will be neck and neck with Buchanan in the eyes of historians for that title.

Gas crisis: check. Middle eastern instability particularly in Afghanistan: check. Inflation: check. Recession: check. No plan to solve either the economy or the quagmire in foreign policy, and the best advice that he can give is to tell the American people to “suck it up”, creating unprecedented unpopularity among the American people: Check. Hmmn, upon further review, if anybody is running as Jimmy Carter it is John McCain!!!

It is better than being compared with George W. Bush I guess. At least Carter attempted peace through diplomacy.

McCain’s got a plan to increase spending also. It’s called the “continue spending enormous amounts of money on the war in Iraq at the expense of our domestic well-being” plan.

I know our savior the messiah has come to free us all from the American life style and “change” our government by adding more government and more taxes, and more control. Isn’t his hallo just a bit heavy by now. Hasn’t anyone ever seen the movie “Elmer Gantry” where Burt Lancaster played the roll of the enthusiastic gospel minister on fire to convert people through “positive” thinking—he was a con artist! There are worse things than being Jimmy Carter. He is the ONLY former president who has actually lived as he spoke. He has been active in organizations that help people since he left the white house. He is the real deal.

Independent voter thinking – let me see should I vote against Carter or should I vote against George Bush … last 8 years gas prices have tripled (or quadrupled), health care costs have increased at least 5 fold, more and more jobs get outsourced, Hmm Iraq…, none of my neighbourhood houses are selling .. so my property value is decreasing, bread prices have doubled, recession, …. Both sides sound pretty lame here…I don’t think calling Obama or McCain a “loser” means that the election will come out any differently.
I guess I would just like it if people said “McCain is close to Bush in this way, but not in that way,” and “Obama has attitudes similar to Carter with regard to X, but he differs in X,” Instead of constant bleating: “McSame! Jimmy Carter was a good man, an honest man and a good president. He had to deal with difficult circumstances and international crisis. And did so without war, cultivating hatred. Whoever the next president will be will be inheriting, like President Carter did, a bad economy and an international community in need of healing. We want everything our way, right away and we don’t want to pay anything for it. I would rather be called Jimmy Carter than any president since.

What is interesting is the current punditry on the veepstakes. The McCain pundits are saying he needs a VP that will brighten his image given his age. The Obama pundits are saying he mustn’t pick a VP that dims his brightness.
The Obama camp is still afraid of Hillary Clinton even having taken the nomination. Itdoesn’t matter that she is out of the race; it does matter that they keep working the message of Obama Girl that his image needs to be protected. That’s a real fear and a real weakness that can be exploited: rock stars can’t lose the bad boy image or they become working stiffs.

Posted by: James | June 9, 2008, 9:47 pm 9:47 pm
Carter was a disaster. During the time he was president America was disgraced by his policies.
Carter talked until he was blue in the face. It just didn’t work. Our people were held hostage by Iran for over four hundred days. Carter just stood by and did absolutely nothing. Americans lost confidence in America, so did the rest of the world. It took Ross Perot to bring them home. Obama thinks his speeches and his oratory skills are the answer to whatever ails the world, just like Carter. Hardly. If Obama’s elected, look forward to TWELVE YEARS of Rebublican rule after his presidency fails. Vote for McCain and for a Democratic congress and senate. Let there be BALANCE in government instead of the power grabs. the Dems did it in the late eighties and early nineties.
The Rebublicans have done it for the last eight years. American doesn’t need aan amature for president. As much of a Democrat as I am, I can’t vote for Obama. I’ll either vote for McCain or stay home for the very first time since I’ve been old enough to exercise my right to vote. McCain is a patriot. Obama? That’s a good question. His wife(who will be co-president)that’s an even better question that need answered.

Texas Lil – I agree, Carter was bad. Bush is worse. I’ve never seen a time when the U.S. was so non-influential around the world.
Global opinion matters, because we see ourselves as global leaders, but that implies others are willing to follow.
We still have that, but to a much, much lower degree than anytime I’ve known – including when Carter’s Delta Force mission was floundering in a dust storm.
Posted by: Paul | June 9, 2008, 9:53 pm 9:53 pm
Lets see — I’m currently living through Bush’s nightmare. Yea, I can see the connection to McCain. I can see how McCain is endorsing the policies of the Bush Administration.
When Carter was president, I wasn’t old enough to vote. Don’t remember much about him. What I read in the history books doesn’t seem all that similar to Obama. But then, that was a long time ago. A little hard to make the connection.
I guess if you are losing the political association battle, you’ll grasp at anything, no matter how absurd. In a verbal battle between McCain and Obama, McCain resembles a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest. The Democrats may have to be gentle with McCain, so as not to appear that they are ‘picking’ on the old man.

As a democrat I will be voting for McCain, but not out of spite or or hatred for Obama. I watched the debates and read up on Obama’s record (which is weak at best). His performance was lackluster. People speak of his eloquence. You don’t vote for eloquent speeches that really say nothing you vote for ability and Obama does not have it. You speak of change but you don’t realize that Obama has made so many back room promises to Kerry and Dean and the Kennedys to get where he is. Any friend of John Kerry is no friend of mine. In addition to Obama’s inexperience he is now beholden to a slew of people. If he tries to keep the promises he will be ineffective and should he fail, he will have an army of powerful enemies working against him and the media will turn around and betray him. Hillary don’t take him up on the VP slot should he offer it to you. Let him clean up Bush’s mess on himself.
Finally, don’t think people are voting McCain just out of anger over Hillary or because they are racists. Many consider themselves independent. Many are all disgusted with the Democratic party; the primaries illustrated how defunct the leadership is. I feel that McCain is the best candidate.

Don’t underestimate “an old man”. Ronald Reagan was an “old man” he beat the hell out of Jimmy Carter in 1980. Like it or not, Reagan brought the honor back to America Carter lost. He had backbone. He stayed in office for eight years, then handed the presidency to George H.W. Bush for four more. And another thing…we baby boomers ARE the majority in American. Not the “wet behind the ears” college kids that have voted for the first time. The primaries ain’t the general election.

Obama accepted more money from oil company executives than any other candidate, while he ran an ad saying he didn’t take money from oil companies.

Texas Lil, you missed my point. We can’t afford the same policies as Bush which McCain will just continue. And we won’t be fine. Ask yourself, are you better off than you were 4 years ago. If you are then that’s wonderful, but I’m not. Something needs to be done about this economy. And republicans are all for the rich and not for the working class.

david in texas, where do you get your info from. The electoral vote shows Obama winning.
Posted by: lisa d | June 9, 2008, 11:15 pm 11:15 pm
lisa d,
I’m self employed. Honestly, I am better off than four years ago, but I live in Texas and in a city where oil and gas are the life blood of the economy. However, I don’t forget where I’ve come from, and have had more than my share of economic struggles. Daily I see the hardship high gasoline prices have had on the working class and more so, the poor. I was mortified when Obama scoffed at “thirty bucks” worth of relief from a gas tax holiday. He hasn’t a clue. “Thirty bucks” is a lot of money for someone who is in poverty, and there are more than a few in that catagory. Also, Obama wants to raise the capital gains tax to 25 percent. THAT will be catastropic to working class retirees. He wants to raise taxes on small business. I really don’t see how Obama plans on helping average Americans. He’s campaigning on Washington being a cesspool, but if he gets there it’ll turn into a jacuzzi for HIM.
Posted by: Texas Lil | June 9, 2008, 11:26 pm 11:26 pm
Omentum……get my POINT….Obama scoffed at “thirty bucks”…He probably spends that much at Starbucks everyday. There are people at gas stations begging gasoline, not money, gasoline everyday. And he says “what kind of relief would that be” Yeah, yeah, I want safe bridges too, and don’t want people laid off, but make Exxon pay for it.

You are totally off the mark….McCain was the man who stood up to the Republicans to get rid of the Bush torture policy….that is a public fact that anyone who has been around for the last few years would certainly know.
If you want to compare Bush to McCain you should at least have the facts instead of using Democratic talking points.

I don’t think McCain should be complimenting Obama by comparing him to Jimmy Carter. Obviously, Obama will be ten times worse!!!

I was a young girl during Carter’s administration. My parents were democrats as I am today. I was too young to really understand or pay much attention to his presidency, what I remember the most about Carter is that people considered him a joke. They were very unhappy with him and had no respect for him as they still don’t to this day. I consider myself a conservative democrat and unless something drastically happens to turn me off from McCain, I’m going to vote for him. I’m tired of the far left liberals or far right conservatives trying to run this country. Unless there is a big fumble, McCain is going to walk away with the presidency.

This is not the time to start throwing rocks about fiscal irresponsibility. 7 years to take a projected surplus to the highest realized deficit. Ever. A deficit whose main beneficiary have been Iraq, China, and Korea.
The actual cash that has been sent to and unaccounted for in Iraq would have paid for the maligned programs you criticize.

Good God Obama is like Jimmy Carter; you mean the guy who builds affordable housing for the underclass in America. The good hearted samaritan. Oh dear what will we do. Our former Democratic Presidents were and continue to be great leaders in our nation and the world. I am sick of Republicans trying to make us feel ashamed of our leaders and I am sick of supposed DEMS not defending them but running from them. The Republics have been horrible to the people that are the most vulnerable in society. Their entire party should be ashamed of their whole system! Obama should be proud to be compared to such a great leader.

McCain is right on the issues??? I don’t think so.
Take his alleged strong suit, national security, for example. Invading Iraq was a tactical blunder. Keeping our troops there at great cost, and without any realistic prospect of achieving any lasting tangible strategic benefit, is inexcusable. Devoting the bulk of our limited military resources to Iraq to nation build, instead of sending enough troops to Afghanistan to finally get the job done on bin Laden, Mullah Omar and the supposedly untouchable al Qaida safe haven in western Pakistan, borders on criminal negligence.
McCain’s continuing failure to even acknowledge, much less promise to correct, these glaring Bush administration strategic blunders, proves he lacks even rudimentary judgment.
Perhaps worst of all, was McCain’s refusal to support Sen Webb’s GI Bill amendment giving enlisted folks real educational assistance after “only” one enlistment term. He opposed this because he felt too many troops would go to college instead of reenlisting. McCain apparently doesn’t believe constantly enduring varying forms of hardship, occasionally including violent death, for only one hitch, is sufficient consideration for providing a soldier a real shot at college.
McCain is not fit to serve as Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare Obama to Jimmy Carter’s presidency. Obama hasn’t spent one day in office.
But yes, President Carter was the worst. He was indecisive and weak. He had the chance to fix our energy crisis back in the 70′s and he did nothing…and he cared too much what the media thought of him…very vain.

Pretty smart for an old fart! So BO’s new nickname is: Carbama? That’s too funny! Carter is a decent guy but was a really crappy president who knew little to nothing about world affairs. Definitely can see the similarity.

Let’s also blame Bush for everything else that has gone wrong in this world. Get your head out of the sand. If you were more informed you’d realize Bush is not the antichrist. If you had more info you’d know that it’s been the Republicans that have given more tax breaks than any democrat. Investigate first. Comment later.

Obama is a dangerous combination:
He combines the worst of Presidents Bush AND Carter.
Remember Bush slogan “I am a Uniter not a Divider”, a candidate full of hot air, without any history who promises a lot and delivers a disaster.
Carter is the worst president that the USA ever had. He brought us an inflation rate of 20% due to his dumb economic policies, he created Iran as we know it today, controlled by the ayatollahs, he made sure that there is no peace between Israel and the Palestinians, he reduced our Military to zero (we needed President Reagan to reverse Carters stupid inaction), see who are Obama foreign policy advisors most of them are the same failures during the Carter administration…
Obama brings a combination of the two; he is full of hot air, chants like a Parrot “Change” and is expected to be a total disaster.

Jimmy Carter gave us Double Digit
Inflation and he sat Idly by while
dissidents in Iran plotted against
the Shah, who was supposedly our ally!
Jimmy Carter turned his back on the situation and did nothing and because of his inaction 400 of our people were taken hostage!
What he has done since he left office has nothing to do with his ineptitude
in office! Obama shows the same
potential!

What did the Reagan/Bush team have to do with the timing of the hostage release? Did those negotiations have any relation to Iran Contra? What does Iran Contra have to do with the state of Iran today?

I laughed my butt off when I heard that, the fact that McCain is right doesn’t scare me.
Jimmy Carter is a good humanitarian person but made for a bad president. I was 19 yrs old in 1980 and couldn’t vote fast enough to get him out of office.
High Inflation – check
High Interest Rates – check
High Energy Cost – check
Weak on Foreign Relations – check
Very High Unemployment – check
I remember the truck drivers were circling the Whitehouse in protest.
He just plain out right suked at it.

The rovian ‘tax and spend’ mantra of the GOP is an outright lie. The last three self-proclaimed ‘small goverment’ GOP presidents are unprecidented in the expansion of government. They spent far beyond our means and put us into debt placed on the backs of our children and grandchildren. There’s no way for McCain to win without mudslinging as he sells his soul deviously trying to make some extremely negative lie or inuendo stick. People identify with the aggressor…at first. Hopefully voters will see through the fear mongering RNC slime, shake our heads with appropriate disgust, and purge these thugs from our government. Replace ‘Repugnant” for “Republican” as the former great party. Watch caustic rovian slime ooze from the O’Reilly, Coulter, DeLay and McCain thugs over the next five months.
Posted by: wordvarc | June 15, 2008, 3:13 pm 3:13 pm
I think what comes across in the comments above are that the Carter and Bush presidencies ended with similar results, although the cause was on the one hand extreme pacifism and on the other extreme war mongering.
Surely this should suggest that (as Carter himself said) that Government can only do so much?
As such, I had hoped when Americans went to the polls, they’d vote for a realist and a visionary. But they haven’t been given such a choice.

I think it is obvious that the koolaid drinkers in the democratic party are well represented on this forum. I am old enough to remember the fiasco that Jimmy Carter was. You think the economy is bad now. During Carter’s administration we had double digit inflation and home mortgage rates were also double digit(not to mention the gas lines). At that time the thought of being able to get a home mortgage for under 10% seemed an impossible goal. Jimmy was at least partially responsible for the downfall of the Shah in Iran (and the beginning of 9/11) which led to the capture of the American hostages whom he was powerless to free. He was weak and naive – just like Barack Obama. This plan to put in these “windfall” oil taxes will only punish the consumer. If you have taken any classes in Accounting like I have you would know that companies do not pay taxes. They pass them on to consumers which would just mean higher prices for us. The last time they used this kind of tax on oil, the price went up and less oil was produced.
What I would like to know is why is the increased drilling is turned into a partisan issue? We all need the oil as soon as possible. No plan that Obama is putting forth will do anything to relieve the problem. ALL he seems to want to do is to increase prices so we will be forced to buy less. Unlike him, I need to eat and get to work. The Republicans are far from perfect but at least they are starting to see the light. Drill Here and Drill Now!!!!

We are not looking to enhance civil liberties of terrorists beyond those of what the UCMJ provides our military. We are not looking to weaken our military to the degree that it forces us into embarrassing diplomatic defeats. We are not looking for a 1 term senator with no record of acheivement to lead us. We don’t need a humiliating reminder of what a 2nd Jimmy Carter term would bring. Lowering taxes has brought the country an eight year period of economic accomplishment that the world envies. Obama is clearly above his Peter line (as in principle)

The young Americans will save us. NOT the ones listening to Marxist professors but the ones volunteering to spread freedom. Their’s are lessons college professors will never understand. Then hopefully when the young socialist brats turn forty they will have developed a brain and be concerned about their young and how to protect them.

Mary and Rose, you scare me. You think Obama is weak in a debate? That he needs a teleprompter? Have you turned on your TV and watched Palin and McCain? Can you name one newspaper that you read without asking anyone for help? Perhaps you are with the supporters who prefer to have a Pres. &VP that are more like you, not the “elite”. I on the other hand, prefer voting for those who are a hell of alot smarter and wiser than I am to control the destiny of our country for the next few years.
