Nader: Obama trying to “Talk White,” Appeal to “White Guilt”

In an interview with the Rocky Mountain News, independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader says the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, is trying to "talk white" by downplaying poverty issues.

Nader — who launched his 5th presidential campaign in February — says the only thing different about Obama from previous Democratic presidential candidates is his race. "I haven’t heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos," Nader says. "Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What’s keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn’t want to appear like Jesse Jackson? We’ll see all that play out in the next few months and if he gets elected afterwards."

Asked if he thinks Obama is trying to "talk white," Nader said, "of course….The number one thing that a black American politician aspiring to the presidency should be is to candidly describe the plight of the poor, especially in the inner cities and the rural areas, and have a very detailed platform about how the poor is going to be defended by the law, is going to be protected by the law, and is going to be liberated by the law," Nader said. "Haven’t heard a thing."

Nader also says Obama wants to show he’s not "another politically threatening African-American politician. He wants to appeal to white guilt. You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically he’s coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it’s corporate or whether it’s simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up."

An Obama spokeswoman, Shannon Gilson, said "we are obviously disappointed with these very backward-looking remarks."

Obama’s skin color aside, on Tuesday, the Nader campaign assailed Obama’s decision to support the revised domestic surveillance bill, pointing out that Obama had previously said he would support a filibuster of any bill that included retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies.

But now though Obama says he will try to get retroactive immunity removed from the bill, he will ultimately vote for it either way.

Said the Nader campaign: "Liberal Democrats are surprised and outraged that Obama would flip-flop this way. But we’re not surprised. From the beginning, we saw through Obama’s ‘Change You Can Believe’ mantra. Obama is just another corporate candidate. At times, he might sound like a progressive. But he’s not. That’s why we’re here. We’re here to give the American people a choice in November."

Ugh…and this guy matters? I mean come on. Does he really think that some stuffed suit loser is going to tell this black man that he isn’t black enough? Ralph shuddup..you know not of what you speak sir. Obama’s African American vote is just fine. Some vote on skin color, but those who are paying attention know he really is the best candidate for America. Ralph Nader is trying to talk black….see how laughable that is?

Why is Ralph Nader still talking as if people are actually listening to him? Shouldn’t someone tell him that he comes off as a bitter old man? Someone should give Jimmy Carter that same talk. It’s over gentlemen. Your time is past.

Do people give a damn what Nader thinks? His presence made the difference in the Dems loss in 2000 in Florida and we Dems will NEVER forget that.
So which is it? Is Obama too black or too white? Why does Nader have to bring up race at all?

Nader LOST his argument when he injected race in his discussion. It’s fine to go after Obama on FISA (who knows what Obama’s final vote will be there. He may indeed support the filibuster).
But once Nader starts talking about Obama trying to act “white” than Nader LOST the argument. Obama is BOTH white and black. Obama CAN BE both.

Obama is not the candidate of African Americans, and that hurts Nader, the candidate of the fools!!! Obama is a candidate who happens to be African American, just like McSame happens to be old. Or, is McSame the candidate of senior citizens?

He’ll get 98% of the black vote .. being that blacks are only 12% of the population and you know damn well they aren’t all voting – what else can he do but depend on “white guilt”? Nothing – zero .. zilch! He’s toast!

Posted by: MJ | June 25, 2008, 8:11 am 8:11 am

I am african american, and the truth is Ralph is right.
this is why i have said from the beginning, black people and poor people are NOT voting their interest. The clinton’ have tried to level the playing field for the black and poor a lot longer and done more that obama has.
Why is obama not talking about how to ease or stop the black plight in inner cities. because he didn’t come from there.
the sad thing is, my people, i guess my people have wanted a black president for so long, when obama came along, at first they said (and rightfully so,is he black?,) we don’t know him. and after having said that we should have started to question him, and get to know him, to see IF he was worthy of our support. The red flag should have gone up, when blacks had to ask, Who is he? Because I think, if obama had walked with us (been in the communities helping the black cause on a national level for some time) if he had walked with us, we would have known him.
As painful as it might be, and at this point no one wants to hear it, because what can you do about it now. Ralph Nader is correct.
now people will attack ralph personally, and say things such as “who is listening to him?” etc. but just think for a minute about what he is saying, and go back and try to disprove it.
as i have said many times, the well off black people will be fine, no matter who is in office, obama as president for them, was just another status symbol.
but for poor people and poor blacks,
working class black people. folks getting a paycheck every two weeks, and such, should have been questioning, questioning, and questioning, what is he going to do for ME and MINE? that I should support HIM for president.
obama has not offered a real solution, and the sad thing is black people have not required one from him.
someone wrote in an earlier post, “obama is fine with the black vote”
the question should be are the black voters (who voted blindly for him, because all they had to go on was his skin color) going to be fine with him.

Barack Obama is a PATRIOTIC AMERICAN. He has one HAND over his HEART at all times. He occasionally switches when one arm gets tired, which is almost never because he is STRONG.

Posted by: matt w. | June 25, 2008, 8:19 am 8:19 am

Ann,
it is two late for you folks to be asking about ACORN, if you are a dem. and wanted a dem in the white house,
you should have been asking that questions, months back, i and every other black sen. clinton support tried on blogs to tell people where obama really stood, and give the inner workings of the people he has for mentors, etc.
but no, black people and a lot of white people have seen skin color on obama and said YEA! without asking any questions.
i cannot believe i am about to write this statement again, i wrote it in this blog months ago.
everyone was so down on sen. clinton personally, they did not stop to think about what would her centrist politics do to help me, especially when paired next to obama, and mccains.
obama and his crew and their phil. is going to change our country from the way we know it, and for most of us it will not be a good change, i don’t think it will happen over night, but change is gonna come, and for the poor, black and working people they are going to suffer-and don’t even mention the people who consider themselves middle class now.
mccain=more war.
and obama is not going to be able to get us out of this war, the way he has campaigned and won votes.
we put nancy p and the dems in, with their promise of ending the war, what have they done?
it really is no need to continue to go over this, obama or mccain as president is not going to be good.
I believe the only thing we maybe able to continue to claim is “well, they gotta be better than bush” lets HOPE and PRAY so

Posted by: jgaw | June 25, 2008, 8:31 am 8:31 am

truth,
Nader bringing up WHO in this presidential cycle is going to help the plight of the poor and working class, is outrageous?
obama has not, non has mccain.

Posted by: jgaw | June 25, 2008, 8:34 am 8:34 am

I agree that Obama is appealing to “White Guilt” and makes many vote for him to erase their conscience of racial prejudice. Many think they are now showing they are not prejudice if they hold up a sign showing support for Obama. It is the “in thing” to do and it makes one look “cool”.
With the entire problems that America currently faces, we need a “real” president and not just someone voting for the “cool” candidate. He does seem “Serious” to me and the democrats have created a “Season of silliness” in this year’s campaign!
I have changed my vote to someone “serious” about this nation and that would be McCain. He is much more mature and we need that in our country right now.

Poor Ralph Nader. Sad when someone doesn’t know when to hang up his cleats. Nader and Lieberman are the first to come to mind. When you’ve hung on so long that you attack those who champion the issues that you care about and give a free pass to the villains on those issues, then it’s time to retire.

Naders position on the issues would be very good for the poor in this country. Nader is intelligent and has dedicated his life to helping the helpless against large corporations. I don’t like that he only comes out every 4 years, but he has a lot of good ideas to offer. Somehow we need to embrace his ideas in the deomcratic party to really help the poor in this country.

sorry military mom, had to run some errands,
to your question to me, yes after investigating them all, sen. clinton was my choice. and since she is out we are sunk, but if i had a gun to my head and someone telling me to chose i would go for mccain. he scares me a bit.
but obama is to much of an unknown (even at this late stage in the game)
I do go along with the saying “a little smoke-fire somewhere” so sorry obama and a speech here and there does not satisfy me when it comes to talking about his past associations, there is SOMETHING to the fact of his mentor in hawaii, and his going to chicago(which is a hotbed of left-wing radical politics) and his association with the tucc.
yes, i want change, i want an african american president., but i don’t think i want what i see as the big change obama will bring to washington.
i don’t like the gridlock or any of the other messes, but i don’t think obama and his crew are being completely transparent in the change they are going to bring.
all i have to go on is his phil. and his past. and they just don’t line up with me and mine.

That is a sad way to vote for a President. a Hope and a Prayer.

With Obama’s new PR program to remake himself, redefine himself. Is the most childish, most immature thing he has come up with so far. Shows he has nothing to run on but Hype and hoopla.
He is not stable enough to be President.
he has proven that Himself.
Remember the koolaide is in his voice and speeches. Those motivational mind conditioning speeches, Ads, slogans and Catch phrases.
Just like those stop smoking, lose weight seminars. The Speeches with mind conditioning hypnotic methods used. Same thing Obama uses on a refined level. Reinforcement techniques are in the ads, the commercials and other speeches and statements.
So he needs mega Bucks to keep Those reinforcements in constant public eye. to keep it all working.

Look, Nader’s the good guy, and both Democrat and Republican nominees are, to a great extent, in the bag for business and commercial interests. That is the way of our “two-party” system. I’d like that to change.
However, if you’re one of many Americans who think that the war in Iraq was a mistake or believe that the Republicans have run the economy into the ground and think that the chaos George Bush and John McCain unleashed in our foreign affairs has something to do with the price of gas at the pump… then you have Bush’s partner John McCain to thank.
No one worked harder than McCain to get Bush elected then reelected. And no one promoted and advocated for the Iraq war than John McCain. Senator McCain can talk all he wants to about the success of the surge, but John McCain’s original sin was going to war in the first place.
No repeat of 2000. The stakes are much to high. It is imperative that Obama be elected. We get a united Democratic Congress and Executive…then they are on the clock – let’s see if they can deliver.

Anybody who is still saying they don’t know enough about Obama at this point says a lot more about you than it does about him. Don’t be lazy, do some research to discover the truth (and not just to verify what you already believe). We already have a moron in the White House who has spent 8 years doing that.

If he knows so much – how come he can’t get elected, and is partly responsible for getting George Bush elected?
For all those who want to weigh Senator Obama down with your own personal racial and religious hangups – forget about it! It’s not happening!
Senator Obama is the best qualified person of any race and/or gender running for President in either party. Period.

I’m not worried about these ‘socially important’ issues, such as Obama being an ‘authentic’ black or whatever. That shouldn’t play any role in the election, not any more than a candidate’s religion.
You can tell a lot about a man by observing his friends. If we apply this logic to Sen. Obama, I’m afraid we’re looking at a dangerous situation. It seems he’s been a bad judge of character for the past 20 years or so. That’s an important issue, enough of this ‘white guilt’ and ‘authentic black’ talk. It’s not important.

There is a vast difference. McCain has served in Congress for 26 years. Times certainly change drastically in that long of a time perdiod, prompting a rational person to change their views.
Obama has served in Congress for barely over three years. Heck, he changes his mind in a matter of days.

Obama wrote an entire book about his struggle to find his own identity in Dreams From My Father: should he fit in with the whites and be criticized by blacks for being too white? Or fit in with blacks and be criticized by whites being too black? Now we have a white person accusing Obama of being too white! Has Nader actually read the book? Obama is actually trying to live out both sides of his identity, white & black.
Nader has never had to struggle with where to fit in because of his skin color. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’m really surprised this has come from Nader. I thought he had more empathy for others struggles than this.

ther freakin nerve of this idiot. racially, obama is 50% white. and why does he have to work out the thing with the ghetto and payday loan, etc. for one, mccain isn’t talking about helping the situation, either. and number two, obama was not raised in the ghetto. he lived in hawaii, chicago, and indonesia. nader, you time is up. why don’t you go do something to help somebody instead of getting on the news and being a real heel.

Regarding Polls…
Michael Dukakis was up 14 points at around the same time when he was going against the elder Bush.
When American start to connect the dots of both candidates….only then can they really see the image…..the images now of Obama are glittered but no substance at all.
Google—> Public Law 110-181, Obama ad
Even Obama himself is sprinkling the glitter on himself….

The Project for Excellence in Journalism is a research organization that specializes in using empirical methods to evaluate and study the performance of the press. It is non partisan, non ideological and non political (more info at journalism.org)
As of May 2008, positive media coverage of candidates were: Obama 69%, Mccain 43%
As for Cable News positive coverage of candidates as of 3/08: Fox: Obama 69%, Mccain 45%. CNN: Obama 59%, Mccain 49%. MSNBC: Obama 70%, Mccain 53%.
As for over-all radio airtime coverage: Obama 30% with 60% positive coverage. Mccain 23% airtime with 19% positive.
Over-all media candidate coverage (paper, tv, radio) for last week: Obama 77%, Mccain 55%.
This is the fair and un-bias media coverage we have been told about. I’m not sure how to pin-point the un-bias part from these numbers. The media is obviously in Obama’s pocket….lets hope the voters are not!

charles, i feel you,
but if obama had been “all that” he would have been able to transcend all of the obstacles you mention, and he should have been the one who would have been able with his speech to talk to convience the people of the right thing to do. harold washington was able to do this.
obama with his own words said he was not ready to be president, and he wanted to get some more experience, he should have stuck with that, but no the far left got to him, to be a spoiler to sen. clinton.
how would you feel if you eventually find out, that obama’ candidacy really had nothing to do with you, it was all to stop sen. clinton? and her ideology.
and what she believed in and would have done, was in your best interest?

“Acting white”? Is that Nader’s code term for uppity? How dare Barak talk like the educated, upper-middle class man that he is! He doesn’t express only those opinions that black people “should” express — guess he just doesn’t know his place. Marse Ralph’s despicable comment is one of the most profoundly racist utterances I have ever had the displeasure to read or hear. I thought I couldn’t lose any more respect for Nader, but I was wrong.

It’s not important.

one of the best things that will come out of an obama presidency is we will finally have reparations for the black people, it is long overdue, but president obama will have the political will to see that it happens.

And she would have lost. Why can’;t you get this through your head. The Repubs HATE the Clintons with a PASSION. They are not fired up about McCain, but they would be to make sure Clinton was defeated. It goes back to the “vast right-wing conspiracy” that HRC blamed Bill’s indecent behavior on. The GOP wanted to run against HRC because they would have won in a landslide. Her negatives are HIGH amongst the Democrats. You add that to the hatred of the GOP and she would have been toast.
The DNC knows this, the Supers know this and as an Independent, I could see this.

JS,
You are in la la land. Obama will not work for reparations. Has he mentioned any of this in his campaign speeches???? No Besides Obama is not a descendant of the African American slave lineage. So why should he care? His father is Kenyan, his mother was white. Why should he care? Because his mother is the descendant of slave owners? What is the connection?

jgaw, you support mrs. clinton, who happens to support obama now. maybe not him personally, but the democratic party, so what’s your beef? and for all those who want to say, ‘nobody knew obama before’, i didn’t know much about mccain, either. so as for both candidates, this is a fresh start with me. race is not my concern. my concern is who is right for america. that should be everyone’s concern, not race.

Posted by: msmama | June 25, 2008, 10:38 am 10:38 am

I’m also a American that happens to be black, and I don’t care if he is concerned about the black plight. I don’t care what he plans to do about for blacks. I’m more concerned about America as a whole. My country comes before my race. And I think Obama is the right choice for this country. For those (probably the same person) who continue to say what he’ll do for blacks are ignorant. Our country needs a leader that is going to put us back on the course of greatness, and I think he intends to put us back on that course.

“Anybody who is still saying they don’t know enough about Obama at this point says a lot more about you than it does about him. Don’t be lazy, do some research to discover the truth (and not just to verify what you already believe).”
I would love to do that research.
Unfortunately, Barack Obama is a third year freshman senator with a scant voting record in the senate.
In addition, Obama destroyed and/or failed to archive any of his papers from his time as an Illinois State senator. This is suspicious on its face. Just about everyone else with presidential aspirations saves everything—even personal correspondence—for the historical record.
What I do know is troubling. Two examples:
When Obama was first running for the Illinois State Senate he filled out, then amended, a candidate positions questionnaire asserting that he support the outright ban on the manufacture and sale of handguns and that he opposed the death penalty.
The Politico first reported Obama’s 1996 responses to the survey in a December 11, 2007 article entitled “Liberal views could haunt Obama.”
In response, Obama claimed that the questionnaire was filled out by an over-zealous staffer, and that Obama NEVER EVEN SAW the survey, let alone filled it out.
The full truth did not emerge until The Politico obtained an amended copy of the questionnaire that bore Obama’s OWN HANDWRITTEN CHANGES, and then reported the truth:
That Obama was actually interviewed about the issues on the questionnaire by the liberal Chicago nonprofit group that issued it.
Politico also found that Obama — the day after sitting for the interview — filed an amended version of the questionnaire, which appears to contain Obama’s own handwritten notes added to one answer.” (Source, Vogel, “Obama had greater role on liberal survey”, Politico, March 31, 2008, p. 2.)
In response to a questionnaire from the Midwest Democracy Network, Obama stated in November, 2007:
“If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.”
(Source, Smith, “Obama out of system, but not out of character”, Politico, June 19, 2008; also see Erbe, “Obama’s Public Finance Flip-flop”, US News, April 11, 2008.)
John McCain immediately accepted Obama’s challenge and agreed to opt for public financing.
Nevertheless, as we all now know, last week Obama confirmed that he has opted out of public financing for his campaign.
And no, I do not believe that Obama is a Muslim, that his birth certificate is a fake, or any of the other crackpot anti-Obama posts on this site.
There are more than enough LEGITIMATE reasons to doubt Obama’s truthfulness about his political positions that are supported by cedible news sources.

As a female caucasian woman with African American relatives please allow me to cut through the bS I read on this site — and throughout this campaign — about Sen. Obama’s race.
The man is both black and white. I find it historically retro that he is called black all the time while most don’t even give a nod to his white heritage. Particularly since he was raised by white grandparents and his white mother. in a white-oriented culture. It is so like some Americans to cling to the old, old, old concept that anyone with one drop of black blood is totally black. He is obviously bi-racial, hardly exotic today. ****For those who want to talk facts,**** they are listed clearly on his website. We don’t really need to dirty our country by talking trash about the man. Or showing other nations how we disrespect those with darker skin. That must make us really popular around the world.
As for Mr.Nader, I once asked him if he was considering running for president and he said in the 80s.that he was not. In fact, he’s been running and running ever since. I once visited his office; he is treated like G-D. So much for humility. I am deeply disappointed that Nader, who once did such good investigative work — via his lowly paid “Naders Raiders” is sinking to such lows. Poor envious man.
A female military veteran for a better America. JMB

Say what you will, but Nader brings some valid points. Boil Obama’s person and campaign down. Personally, he’s a mixed-race individual, cast as a black man. His racial complexion would match some 80-90% of Americans. Yet, he doesn’t transcend race – he panders to race. There’s a big difference.
Watch his speeches and note. When he’s speaking to African-American groups, he takes on the persona of a guy from round the way. His language infused with slang and inflection. For white folks, it’s a stiff, staccato throughout the speech. And when it’s a televised speech or large mixed rally, he’s lecturing America.
This isn’t merely an attempt to ‘connect’ – it’s pandering through and through. When you’re listening from your spot in the audience ask yourself if he’s from your world. He isn’t from any of the above worlds. He trumpets his cross-cultural life as a standard. But the truth is that he’s struggled with his own personal identity. Now, he’s turning years of internal reflection and struggle into material for pandering to Americans. If he was fluent in Spanish, I fully believe he’d be trying a similar spin on Hispanics.
Transcending race and culture doesn’t come from a good script, acting, and a teleprompter. To invoke MLK, it’s about the content of character. Obama hasn’t arrived at the national stage because of the content of his character. He originally arrived at Kerry’s request at the 2004 convention – and he’s spun that up into a roadshow beyond comparison.

and jason, if you are african american,
you are a fool in denial,
there can be no put american back on the right track to greatness, without address the plight of poor blacks,
just as i told roxanne, somewhere back down the line, your people were set back economically because of this system we have lived in.
reparations for blacks now will not harm whites,
the bulk of this country was built on slave labor.
ATL which black people love-was built on slave labor in the form of the us prison system.
please people wake up. yes obama can be the president for all people, but once again, does it have to be at further suffering of black people, as a whole.
where ever jason and roxanne and any other black person who says obama should not address reparations. where ever you are economically right now, it is possible things being right, you would have been a bit better off.
whites still make more than blacks doing the same jobs.
reparations will not level the playing field for all,it will help, and as i say for obama to be the first black president. this could be the jewel in the crown of his presidency, because it is long overdue and it is the right thing to do.
must go now. will return this evening

In every election circle, Nader seeks an opportunity to flaunt his mega-ego and to collect money from gullible Americans with whom he pretends he is waging a class war. And all along, he cherishes and enjoys his millionaire life. One wonders whether the IRS is interested in proper accounting of his campaign finances and collections. Nadir sounds and acts hysterical, as usual. And more noticeably, he sounds as if he is the most honest man on planet earth—and the one who is always right on and about everything. If we dare to follow the Nadir conflict-generating model of social discourse, there will be no society at all. As well, instead of diverse views and intelligent choices, we will be faced with a monololith. There will not be conflict of ideas, but a communist model of governance. Our society is much more vibrant because we are all allowed to think for ourselves (not ordered to think in one way and no other). The constitution protects it. Democracy thrives because of its many noble compromises, within a multiplicity of solitudes within a nation. Ralph Nader might have been more relevant years ago when he was simply a consumer advocate. Now he will be remembered as an irrational, delusional spoiler of elections–the one who made the election of George Bush over Gore possible! He rejoices about it without thinking of the damage he is doing—like a cannibal god rejoicing about the ruins of his own temple. –Dr. Sam

Obama’s latest comercial running here in Michigan sure looks like a “white” politician running. Nader is right. You don’t hear Obama saying anything about Countrywide, nothing about the sweetheart deal he got from Resco. In fact he said he would debate McCain anywhere, yet he has more preconditions for a debate with McCain than he would have for North Korea, “Imanutjob” or any other dictator in the world. Gosh we got an empty suit who is a post turtle running for POTUS. At least Hillary has some background to go on.

The Oracle: You make an interesting point that Obama also faces unique challenges. But so does McCain regarding age and his wife being rich. But think about the benefit that Obama gets…Can you think of one Junior Senator in the history of our country that has been given this opportunity? As the issue has stayed on race people have overlooked his experience and credentials. This is a huge advantage that something so silly as skin color has given him.

Posted by: Nick | June 25, 2008, 11:10 am 11:10 am

Oracle, Please take a course in American presidential history. Andrew Jackson’s wife Rachel became the subject of much debate. Smears about her honor became a major issue in his 1828 election campaign.
In 1806, in response to an insult about Rachel’s character, Andrew Jackson dueled with Charles Dickinson, who wounded him before being shot and killed by the future President.
Candidate’s wives have been the subject of scrutiny and insults for ages. Michelle Obama is not the first so stop whining about how she has had to endure what no other has.

The posts here confirm my point that Obama needs to clearly state his stance of reparations. Obviously there are many who think they’re coming – and just as many others who firmly believe they aren’t. The American people have a right to know whether or not they’re voting for a massive expenditure. Because whether Obama wants reparations or not, you can bet your bottom dollar (no pun intended) that just as a Republican Congress never said no to Bush, a Democratic Congress will never say no to Obama.

NO. Obama is a well educated lawyer and versed in constitutional law. Our constitution is something the current administration has failed (See current court decisions)and whose policies Senator McCain appears to want to continue.

Nader was the spoiler in 2000. Nader himself shifted the playing field and goalpost and recently contended that Gore did win in 2000, but office was “stolen by Secretary of State in Florida”…an obvious attempt to wash his hands (aka Pontius Pilate) in an attempt to remain above it all. Now this self-styled sanctimonious “I won’t do it any way but my way” talks about “black” “white” as if that is the hallmark of this election. Get real Mr. Nader every possible good thing that could have been done since 2000 YOU helped prevent. Every good thing that can be done in this Democracy which is dependent on everything but “MY WAY” unless you’re George Bush or Ralph Nader requires talking to everyone – and while that might offend you (as a whitie) it certainly does not offend a lot of us caucasian people who listen and weigh the consequences. We are very, very, very aware of the consequences of your 2000 campaign and attacks on Gore. You have your right to speak – but you also have the responsibility for your actions. Personally I prefer that you shut up and we won’t have to worry about the second part.

Posted by: OnTheGloryRoad | June 25, 2008, 11:16 am 11:16 am

This is the way Nader has always talked. He does not talk like a politician, which is why he’s never been elected. He just says whatever he thinks is true, which usually IS true. But that is not the way to get elected, get popular, nor get anything done in politics. It makes me think of the person in the audience who asked John Edwards “Are you a politician, or are you an American?”. Ralph Nader is actually an American, not a politician, which is why he doesn’t get anywhere. Sure I think you can be both, which Obama and McCain are. They know how to say things in a way that don’t scare the bejeezus out of half the people. Peeling the layers off the onion and figuring out if a politician is a real American under all the election talk is the real trick.

Posted by: Rod | June 25, 2008, 11:16 am 11:16 am

In response to Nick:
a) Obama was not “given” this opportunity. He took it.
b) John F. Kennedy was three years younger than Obama will be in November and had only about three more years of experience in public life when he was elected president in 1960.

i am just wondering if instead of a biracial person, what if an openly gay white person or perhaps a transgender person was running for president. what would nader have to say about it? had clinton won instead of obama, nader might be somewhere in a corner sucking his thumb. i can only imagine this is about race.

aaaaaaaannnddd we’re talking about black and white again. The racism of non-racists behaving racistly and not realizing it or in denial that they’re being racists is just rampant this year. Nader you’ve just joined that very club. By saying “acting”. Well how do whites act? Aren’t we all just people? Why are you even making such a distinction? Don’t excuse it like some little inconvenient fart, “acting white” is a deeply racist statement. And you’re gonna get called out on it. Period.

I think Nader has a point. I strongly believe that if Obama does advocate for poor blacks plights some whites may feel he is being too pro black. recently I read an article in the times that said Obama was blowing off Muslim Americans. Imagine Obama advocating for Muslims rights. I am sorry but I have no confidence in the American people when it comes to understanding where Obama is coming from. Obama will continue to have difficult with issues such as these because of his race. It is sad because instead of focusing on the real issues and how to fix the various problems we are facing we focus on feeble things such as a persons race. Americans really need open up their eyes and focus on the things that matter. Health care, Education, Economy, Jobs, etc etc. Will the candidate I am supporting be able to accomplish the issues he is advocating for. Wake up people and prevent the same cycle of lies and broken promises that has been happening for far too long.

That’s like comparing Charlton Heston to Rainman. Guess which one is Rainman?
The simple question here folks, is do we reward bad behavior and vote another Republican into office or try to go in a new direction in the hope we can change the patterns of failure – Monumental failure.

Nader is right. Obama gets a lot of mileage out of of having been a community organizer in the inner city but doesn’t seem to talk about dealing with the problems of the inner city. By the way, Obama seems to like to confuse people about the timing of his community organizer stint – he became a community organizer a couple of years after college and before he went to Harvard Law School. One of his commercials seems to say that he was a community organizer after graduating from law school.

nader is stupid. obama is not appealing to ‘white guilt’. the things he was entitled to from ‘whites’, is the love and protection he got from his family, who happen to be white. so what’s wrong with that.i’m sure he was not raised to believe that someone owed him anything because he is biracial.

Obama is very smart politician. He knows how to use the people for his avantages. He uses back, white, religious people, he uses everyone and everything to get elected. He is a crook just like Mc Cain. If you want to vote for Obama, good for you. If you want to vote for Mc Cain, good for you too. But bashing someone else opinion, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Posted by: crookedpolitician | June 25, 2008, 11:54 am 11:54 am

It is typical for rivals to help the other retire debt after primary process because it makes for party unity towards general election.
At the same time, it is reported that if only 20% of Hillary’s 18 million voters sit out or vote McCain, Obama loses in November. That is only about 4 million voters.
Sources say, Al Gore may try to become the Dem nominee when Obama may be driven out by his own scandals unleased by media. Apparently Obama’s only role is to rid Hillary, then self destruct so Gore will waltz in and claim the nomination in August.
What do you think?

obama did not leave the church, he left that particular church. his former pastor saw a hole in the spotlight and squeezed right on in. he saw a boat going his way and hopped aboard. just because it is a church does not mean it is doing the right thing. don’t get me wrong, most church’s do what they are suppose to. and i wouldn’t mind going to them. but i know first handed that some church’s keep up a lot of unneccessary commotion. if i was in obama’s shoes, i would have left THAT church, too.

Actually, Nader for once has a point. He has ran all through the primary as an African American appealing to and benefitting greatly from the black voters in this country who have never bothered to vote before he came along. Now, he has to try and sway the white working class vote in order to win the GE, so what is his latest ad? He’s now a little white boy from Kansas raised by a single white mother and white grandparents. What happened to living in Nigeria with his mother and her second black husband til he was twelve and then going to live in Hawaii with his grandparents? It is pandering. I don’t want to see ads like this from a candidate. I want a political ad to tell me what the candidate plans to do and how he is going to spend my tax money, period.

charles, i feel you,
but if obama had been “all that” he would have been able to transcend all of the obstacles you mention, and he should have been the one who would have been able with his speech to talk to convience the people of the right thing to do. harold washington was able to do this.
obama with his own words said he was not ready to be president, and he wanted to get some more experience, he should have stuck with that, but no the far left got to him, to be a spoiler to sen. clinton.
how would you feel if you eventually find out, that obama’ candidacy really had nothing to do with you, it was all to stop sen. clinton? and her ideology.
and what she believed in and would have done, was in your best interest?
jgaw,
lets be honest, no one but GOD transcends all. Obama isn’t trying to be GOD, if you think he is thats a problem you have and you are not listening. To me Obama is the man at the right time for this country. This country for years has been divided, at work, play, politics, schools, banks, communities, healthcare, etc. look around where you are now. It is time and the time is now that we unite. Hillary Clinton fought a great fight, but she lost. but she should continue the fight in another capacity. she and Obama pretty much share some of the same ideas, on war, healthcare, imigration, etc. just becaues this is not her time for to be president, should take the fight out of her. I find it interesting that you would suggest that the US Gov (Liberals) would proactively support Obama(a black man)just to rid us of the Clintons. It was the clintons that underestimated Obama and his campaign. What I would encourage everyone is to take a look at your lives, and decide what you want for the present and the future for your children and this world. No one has gotton a raw deal out of this, it is what it is. What also is great about this is that people are really, truely finding somethings about them selves and their views. Race is and always will be a issue in this world, not just politics, if Obama wins, racisism will not be over, but we do and must deal with it, openly and fair. Ask you self, what are your qualifications to run for Presidents, is it age(how old) is it experience(how much and what kind)
is it passion, is it love for your country and the fellow man, is it desire,is it greed, is it power, can this person move the country in positive direction, is this person a uniter or divider, can this person demand respect for us globally, can this person govern from the bottom up and from the top down. I think Barak Ohama can be a great President, but only you can decide

Let’s forget about the race issues, I really don’t care what skin color he is, I just don’t see the potential to run a nation in Senator Obama. Enough already!!! Obama is neither white or black. He’s a man. People are people. Ralph Nader had his day and that was long ago. Who cares what he thinks, especially when he is wrong. A good President will realize that he represents everyone and that issues that help one group also help the other. Anyone who thinks that Blacks are the only people poor and on welfare are sadly mistaken. Let’s face it not all the country’s problems are going to be solved no matter who is elected but we definitely need a radically different approach than we have now.

His line of BS is similar to the disinformation campaigns they launched to block anti-smoking efforts and traction to combat global warming. Nader is always out there telling us that there’s no difference between Dems and Repubs. on the environment, social justice, corporate welfare etc. That’s just a big steaming pile of BS which only helps the fatcats he claims to be fighting. Follow the money.

Yet ANOTHER example of someone OTHER THAN Obama bringing up race…..and he gets blamed for playing the race card.
Some of you people are sad. You talk about race more than he does….then turn around and call him the racist.

Posted by: say what | June 25, 2008, 12:30 pm 12:30 pm

Asked if he thinks Obama is trying to “talk white,” Nader said, “of course….The number one thing that a black American politician aspiring to the presidency should be is to candidly describe the plight of the poor, especially in the inner cities and the rural areas, and have a very detailed platform about how the poor is going to be defended by the law, is going to be protected by the law, and is going to be liberated by the law,” Nader said. “Haven’t heard a thing.”
this is why nader is stupid. you see he said a black american politian.would this not also be the job of a white american politician? case closed.

Obama has caused a lot of discussion, but for the wrong reasons. It’s sad his record does not project “change”, for the better. If Obama has a proven track record for “change” for the better, people would believe him. His own record will be his downfall.

david, ny, do you think mccain would have had his picture taken with a group of black women, had obama not been running for president? i think not. that group of black women would be useless to him.

Let’s step away from the race issue. Senator Obama is neither he is half of each just because he was raised in an all white household does not qualify him as white, today it is called biracial or multiracial which is what he will qualify as because of his father who was African/Arab. Does it really matter what we should be concentrating on is whether he can run this nation not his heritage.

I really do not think much of all this race talk I hear in conversations. I think if a person is qualified to lead this country he should be able to lead it no matter what color he is. So much hate in the world and not enough love in the air. People would not say bad things to other people about race if they truely Had THE LORD JESUS IN there life. People put a C average man in office to be president and didn’t no one say anything about that. I have read up on Obama and he is a very intelligent young man. I feel if he is the pres. I feel he will do a better job at running it than what I have seen in these last 8 Years. I love people for the goodness thats in them and not for all that bad stuff people say because they are angry that a blackman has made it this far. I love white, black, asian, it does not matter if they treat people with respect and diginity.THE TRUTH.

Is it mind-boggling how out of touch Ralph is – he doesn’t get that Obama is inspiring people, not guilting them. Thirty years ago, Ralph might have had a point, and a very pessimistic point at that. But now, he’s just sad and pathetic. It’s like he resents Obama for igniting the imaginations of millions of people, and so Ralph has to belittle him. Ralph has enjoyed a long career as the spoiler in the background, who used to seem rational. Every four years it becomes clearer how far removed Ralph Nader is from reality.

I think this joker Nader should just go and bury his head in the sand! He is a disgrace to all of us. Obama is bi-racial as far as I can tell and don’t know why people are trying to make it a black n white issue. For god’s sake, people of different races are biracial and not one or the other. Let us be real and not just remain ignorant, like Nader.

I just hope your narrow one sided mind doesn’t keep you from seeing the bigger picture and not just the one that is being crafted for you by the racist obama.

MIMS NJ. According to the Polls 90% of the blacks are voting for Obama….pretty amazing. Sounds like voting race to me instead of issues and experience to actually run a country. Nader is blunt but did make some valid points. Obama plays the black card when he wants to black vote and the white card now that he wants the white vote. Guess its ok because he is mixed right???????????????

Posted by: dkihnley | June 25, 2008, 12:51 pm 12:51 pm

Obama was raised in a multi-ethnic white community for his formative years. After he went to college, he got in touch with the black community, and appears to have ‘rejected’ his own whiteness. Why else, would he never show his living grandmother, and show multiple photos of his 4 kenya grandmothers in the news media. On mothers’s day, he didn’t even mention a thanks to his grandmother. He seems still in the process of ‘finding himself’, which might be the reason for his focus on his own internal issues, his ongoing inconsistency, and his being naive in his solutions and approaches. The DNC has been working full-time on an ‘extreme makeover’ for him and his wife to make their candidate look better to a broader audience.

Didn’t McCain have at least 9 lobbyists in his campaign as recently as a few weeks ago? Didn’t McCain’s man just say a terrorist attack on our nation would be good for McCain?

Would you ignore the white vote and talk only black issues? Was Obama raised in the ghettos? Research exactly what is being offered on both sides before you make that decision in November, don’t believe just words, candidates will say anything to get your votes, we are in this state of devastation because we thought there would be change and what we have is barely pocket change.

alice — Obama has alot of experience, he worked in government for 13 years. Obama worked in the Illinois Senate for 8 years, and worked in the US Senate for 5 years.
He knows BOTH how the government works at the state level, as well aso how the government works at the Federal level. And because of working in both Senate, Obama actually has a better understanding, of how the things done in Washington actually affects the citizens at the State level, because he has seen it himself, having worked at both levels of government.
OBAMA HAS THE RIGHT EXPERIENCE!!
John McCain does NOT have this important experience, he has been ONLY in Washington, he has NEVER worked at the state level, so he does NOT know, and has NOT seen how decisions made in Washington actually affect the lives of the citizens at the the state level.

What is talking white? Obama can talk white because he is just as white as he is black. Is McCain addresses the blight in the inner cities, etc.. No, then why should Obama? If an individual prefers to vote for Nader than Obama, or even for McCain, then he/she should absolutely do so. It won’t change how all those who support Obama will elect to vote. On the slave trade – why would anyone bring that into this discussion is unbelievable. But some just like to stir the pot and feed their miserable lives to feel better about themselves. Just because the tribemen may have sold Africans into slavery, this didn’t make it okay for the trades to enslave people. Those European went their to buy slaves. So they knew what they were doing. Besides, two wrongs still don’t make it right.
Obama may have used affirmative action to get his great education, at least he got one and puts it to good use. It appears many in this blog could use some affirmative action education. We complain when people don’t try to education themselves; we complain if we think they get too much education (only when they have more than we do personally). Damn if you do, damn if you don’t. Fortunately, there are more open minded people who are positive than negative. Go Obama – just be yourself and do your thing.

Ralph Nader is about 3 weeks older than I am, and I am 74; our generation has had our chance, and now all we can do is hand the problems we have in part made and certainly have not solved to the younger generations, who will be the ones who will have to face the enormous and daunting challenges ahead. Also – I am White, my husband is Black, we live in a ‘Third World’ country, my children and grandchildren are of various colours and ancestries, but we regard each other as human beings – that is what Obama does – Nader apparently still sees people as primarily defined by race/ethnicity – may be he, like McCain, should admit, as I do, that our generation has had its time – this is a new and different day!

TRUTH BE TOLD: If Obama’s skin was lighter, if he was married to a white woman with kids that looked white, and all else was the same – he would win the November election in a landslide. The history of this nation and the hatred pushed from generation to generation by die-hard bigots – will take this country to hell. Obama can’t put this country in a depression. I honestly believe that your post is the best that I have ever seen on this blog. Until now, whites have had a choice of delving into “black america”. Blacks have NEVER had the luxury of choosing to deal with “white” society. That’s just the way it is. This whole election will truly show what America is made of, and I don’t mean if they choose Obama or not. I have learned so much about this society since this process started, and I am angry and a little hurt with all of the racism that this country claims to be a thing of the past. ON ALL SIDES !!!
Racism, sexism and all the “isms” are not only alive but doing VERY WELL in this country of ours.

spock —- let me give you a clue — it is John McCain’s tax policy of giving the biggest tax breaks to the richest in this country, that will send us straight into a depression, because the MIDDLE CLASS, AND POOR, who make up 94% of the population, (the people in this country who are suffering the most, the ones who are losing their jobs, and homes, and can’t afford to buy gas, and food), will not be able to afford any of this without a tax cut, AND A large portion of those MIDDLE CLASS AND POOR who DID NOT GET A TAX CUT will be applying for food stamps, and welfare, just to get by, and survive.
IT IS JOHN McCAIN’S TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH, WHO WILL BRING DISASTER TO OUR ECONOMY, AND BRING US RIGHT INTO A DISASTER, STRAIGHT INTO A DEPRESSION.

I hear you Teeskee,
All this talk about race and hate, anyone who is a true believer in Christ, knows that they have sinned even if they think those thoughts. If we all just go back to the “Golden Rule”
we will all do better. It takes a lot of energy to hate! I think each President does the very best that can done. There are so manny problems! but we must give anyone who seeks the office a fair chance. So those of you who don’t like Obama, why don’t you run and let’s see what you can do. DON’T BE PART OF THE PART OF THE PROBLEM, BE PART OF THE SOLUTION!

alice — Obama has alot of experience, he worked in government for 13 years.

Obama did save his “hoodwinked” and “bamboozled” lines when he campaigned in Mississippi for a large black audience.
This week he attended a fundraiser among a large black audience and was recorded saying, “Did you hear he was black?”
Obama playing the race card.

Has Nader forgotten that Obama is biracial, with a white mother? Why would he automatically assume that Obama would necessarily trumpet the same issues as Jesse Jackson because their skin shades might be similar? Nader is just proving again what an irrelevent a$$ he has become, especially after ‘changing his mind’ and contravening his own vow to never get into politics. He’s a gadfly and has never been a serious candidate for anything.

Or what his message is?
His campaign is so scattered I can’t make heads or tails of it.
One week he keeps saying Obama is just like Jimmy Carter, then he says Obama is just like John Kerry. Now McCain says he’s just like Dr. No, who is a ficitional character by Ian Fleming.
McCain bumped his head the other day, maybe that will knock some sense into him, LOL!

I’m really getting tired of people telling me that I have feel guilty for prospering when there’s so many poor people. Get over yourselves! I had to work for it like everyone else.
If you’re in a dead end job, get an education. If you’re concerned about teen pregnancies, stop having sex until you’re married. If you’re already pregnant, consider adoption and get an education. If your friends are doing crack, get new friends. If you’re already addicted, go to rehab. If you can’t afford it, get state assistance until you can. Poverty is a state of mind.
We live in a land of opportunity, folks. Race is nothing more than skin pigmentation.

jgaw ….you aren’t the same person I talked to in the grocery line are you?
If you are not, than I heard almost the same thing from another in a store. They went on about how Obama has said nothing about helping the poor and they expected more talk from him about this.
There are a lot of people saying he has not been on the national scene long enough to know him. Everyone is screaming about the middle class but, what about the people that fall way below them, does anyone care?
We keep pushing people down the economic ladder until they cease to exist, this is what Nader is referring to. The candidates seem beneath reaching out to the desperately poor in our society, you think they care about what is going on around the world? They have enough of job just trying to stay alive.
The liberal left aristocratic democrats and corporate greed republicans just can’t seem to stop raping the the lower class enough of their dignity.

Evidently Nader either has an attention disorder, or a hearing problem. The issues he speaks of as not being addressed by Senator Obama have been addressed numerous times by the Senator. Nader references “payday loans and predatory lending”, I suggest he pull up the text of Senator Obama’s speech on the Senate floor during debate of the Bankruptcy bill. Senator Obama addressed these issues quite adamantly as to why he could not support the bill. In reference to his support of the revised FISA bill, if Nader and others reads the bill as written, it safeguards future civil liberties of Americans, but also includes the retroactive immunity clause for Telco’s which Obama did not agree with, however WITHOUT it, this administration and any future administration would and could continue to run roughshod over civil liberties at will. This is a case of getting a little bad with along with a lot of good. The continued protection offered by FISA is important to Constitutional guarantee’s. I commend Senator Obama for supporting this FISA effort even though it’s not to his liking. He supported it for the benefit of all Americans and is on record to visit the retroactive immunity clause, which given his record of fighting this clause, I believe he will. Nader needs to find another Corvair to demoralize the country over. Maybe he could start work on Hummers.

TOTALLY WRONG! First of all it is the wealthy and small businesses who create jobs. Secondly, the 2001 Bush tax cuts LOWERED the bottom two federal income tax brackets: The 15% bracket lowered to 10%; the 28% bracket lowered to 15%. Now then, the top 25% of the nations wage earners account for 86% of the total income tax revenue; and the top 50% of the nations wage earners account for 97% of the total income tax revenue.
Sen. Obama and the Democrats want the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts to expire. THAT will raise the bottom two federal income tax brackets back up to 15% and 28%. THAT WILL BE A HUGE TAX HIKE!
Sen. Obama says he will cut taxes for the lower and middle class. The question is will he cut their taxes AFTER the Bush tax cuts expire? And then will his tax cuts end up a net tax cut or a net tax increase? If Sen. Obama’s net tax cut doesn’t lower the bottom two income tax brackets below the current 10% and 15% then it WILL BE a net tax hike!

OK, I guess I’m supposed to end my support for Barack Obama now because Ralph Nader says he trying to “talk white”. Can someone explain to me the skill of talking white? How does one do that? So if a black candidate sticks to the issues & tries to appeal to all people instead of people who look like him, he’s talking white. Man, who makes this stuff up? What has Nader said about helping out people in the ghetto? About helping the poor? Rather than he do something himself, he criticizes Obama. If anyone ever qualified for Mr. Irrelevant in politics, Ralph Nader is it. Obama shouldn’t even waste his time responding to this wannabe. And of course, the Obama haters jump right on board with this loser. Another question, what is white guilt? What do white people have to be guilty about? These are the nicest, fairest, most honest people on God’s green earth. They’ve treated everyone with nothing but respect & dignity since the inception of this nation. Why should whites feel guilty? Thank you very much, that was my impression of Don Imus being sarcastic. By the way, keep on talking white Obama, I’m still voting for you.

Plouffe: McCain spending ‘unlawfully’
David Plouffe brought a prop to his briefing with reporter: a copy of John McCain’s signature on a state election document in which he attested that he’d be taking public financing.
“John McCain is spending tens of millions of dollars, we believe, unlawfully,’ he said, waving the document.
The details of the argument over whether McCain used an acceptable or unacceptable loophole to secure a loan with the possibility of public financing is now before a court in a DNC lawsuit and subject to the FEC’s consideration.
“John McCain signed his name, ‘John McCain,” Ploufe said. “He got on the ballot attesting he would be in the primary system.”
“They’re out there throwing stones in glass houses on this,” he said of McCain’s attacks on Obama on public financing.

So what if Obama has education and intellectual sophistication, what’s wrong with that?!” You people, like Nadar, are idots to imply that a person is “trying to be white” just because such person has these qualities. That’s what’s wrong with America today, no one likes it when another person gets ahead and does something better for himself while, at the same time, trying to do something better for his/her Country. GET OVER IT ALREADY!

Posted by: kb | June 25, 2008, 3:35 pm 3:35 pm

For all the people still confused about this, Obama is black. It doesn’t matter if his mother is white, he self-identifies as a black or African American man.
Why do people refuse to stop reclassifying him as “mulatto” instead of “black”?
Being black is more than just having two black parents. And I swear, the next person to say, “but Obama was raised by white people! He can’t be black!!!” needs to get off the internet and read a book. If Obama isn’t black because he wasn’t raised by two black parents, then all the black kids raised by white parents, and any black kid who has a white step-parent is no longer black. I mean, what exactly is being raised “black” and being raised “white” anyway?
Sound kind of stupid, right? Right.
Oh, and what Nader said was pretty ridiculous. He needs to just step away from the microphone and take a good hard look in the mirror.
Geeze.

If you read the comments, fel121 you’d see that other people have been using the word “mulatto”, which is why I’ve put it in quotation marks.
Also, s4b0, your comment doesn’t make sense. What the heck is “fully black”? You can be biracial and identify as black at the same time. You can be biracial and identify as white. You can be biracial and identify as biracial. Not a difficult concept.
Also, my grandfather is Native American, but he identifies as black, because culturally, he seems himself as a black man. He married a black woman, had black kids and grandkids, and is part of the black community.
Again, not that difficult a concept.

JOHN McCAIN IS DOING EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE, HE IS PLANNING TO GIVE THE LARGEST TAX CUTS TO THE RICHEST PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY.
THE 94% OF THE POOR AND MIDDLE CLASS ARE NOT GETTING A TAX CUT.

jock59801, if Sen. Obama wins the election and lawsuits are filed BUT there is concrete proof that he was born in Hawaii, then the lawsuits will be summarily dismissed since Hawaii is a state. But if Sen. McCain wins the election, the lawsuits will NOT be dismissed, because Sen. McCain was clearly born outside of the United States. The U. S. Supreme Court will probably hear the case directly — skipping the lower courts — because the case will have to be heard and ruled upon after the election* on November 4, 2008 and before January 20, 2009.
*If the general election is a close race and is contested, then the lawsuits will most likely not be allowed to be filed until the results of the election are certified.

K, the average family of four with an income of $40,000 saw their tax liability lowered by about $2,052 a year because of the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts. When those tax cuts are allowed to expire — as the Democrats and Sen. Obama advocate — the average family of four with an income of $40,000 will see a tax increase of about $2,052. THAT IS A TAX HIKE!

If you strip away the black part of his quote, he would have said the same thing to Kerry, Gore, or Bill Clinton. If you add race as it intersects with class, he has a fitting analysis.
Wasn’t that the point of race, gender, and class analysis…the power structure was not willing to concede power unless you joined it and masqueraded as a believer first?
I honestly think as we look backward and wonder about whether politicians are actually adhering to their promises or their image, we should be able to find many people’s fears being expressed in this campaign.

I think Nader is right on, but could have said it in a better way.
Simply put, while Obama was being touted as the 1st black candidate by the media while Clinton was hailed as the 1st female candidate, we haven’t heard from Obama speaking directly to the Black community. It does indeed come across as avoiding the discussion of issues which are very relavent to the Black community.
Furthermore, while there are still a lot of people in the US which may not feel comfortable with electing a Black President, Nader continues, “Basically he’s coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it’s corporate or whether it’s simply oligarchic.”
A cutting commentary to a questionable circumstance.

Not only is Nader employing racist themes (demanding that non-whites identify primarily with their ethnicity is very much that) but apparently wants Obama to have as little chance of being elected as Nader does. Obama’s ability to make things better — huge. Nader’s ability to make things better — significant, but all in the past.
Here is a very simple fact: If Obama isn’t elected President, McCain will be. Period. Like it or not, that’s the way things are. Obama has many flaws, but McCain is far worse on every single issue.

The lesson to learn from these posts is that there is absolutely not one single reason to vote FOR McCain. So far ALL I have seen from the Republicans is dirty tricks designed to slander Obama, usually while disguised as a Democrat. There hasn’t been one positive reason why McCain should be president. Just fantasies attacking Obama. It’s a sad reflection of the current state of the Republican party and its entirely lacking candidate.

That is SUCH a stupid statement — as if Nader were perfect. Every choice you ever make is a selection among “evils” — or “goods” — or, more correctly, partial evils and goods. And from a rational stance, voting for Nader rather than Obama fosters evil, since it increases the chances that McCain will be elected (which is considerable), and does nothing for the chances that Nader will be (which is nil).

Indeed, why isn’t Nader complaining that McCain is “talking white”? Because a) Nader is insensitive to his own racism and b) because he is doing the Republican’s bidding, just as he did in 2004 and 2000. This is absolutely discouraging. Part of this election has been about people tearing each other down and talking about issues that do not matter. Ralph Nader is taking a cheap shot because he knows that he can’t win.

Can the hardworking, educated, middle and upper class African-Americans get a little love from these type people? If we’re college educated, we’re trying to be white. If we speak correctly, we’re talking white. If we live in nice areas, were uppity. If we overcome extenuating circumstances, pay our own way through honorable educational institutions such as Princeton and Harvard, were affirmative action students with no merit. No love at all? What does people like him want? Will he be okay if we all decided to live poorly, depending on the government, with zero representation? I’m sure it would make for good race related statistical comparisons. Good Grief! Given our country’s history though, most of us expected this, so we’re moving on anyway! Catch you on the flip side.

Why would anyone be surprised by what Nader says here, honestly? In Clinton’s last year in the White House all of his sycophantic minions were saying he’ll be bankrupt from all of the lawsuits against him! What a joke. He handed the keys to this country tp Corporate America and he’s now worth upwards of 200 million! How Obama can ask his supporters to help Hillary pay back the ten million she spent out of a sheer need for attention has just changed my vote from Obama to Nader! It’s obvious to me now that Obama is going to pull a Clinton and pander to the Clinton’s and corporate America to line his own pockets! Excuse me while I get sick.

How can any of you call anybody a racist, when Obama is coming out of a 20 year intimate relationship with a racist church? Forget it. Stop playing victims, stop playing naive. Obama is the sham,, and the fraud.

4GET BILL CLINTON!!!!!!!!
IF HIS OLD LADY RAN A BETTER RACE,AND HE DIDN’T COMPARE OBAMA’S SC VICTORY IN TO JESSE JACKSONS,OR IF SHE DIDN’T MAKE UP THE BULLETS OVER BOSNIA,AND HAD BETTER CAMPAIGN ADVISORS,AND USED HER POWER OF NAME RECOGNITION,AND USE THE GENDER CARD AND RACE CARD WITH HER FRIEND GERALDINE F.,AND IF SHE STOPPED SAYING THINGS PEOPLE WANTED TO HEAR INSTEAD OF TELLING THE TRUTH,AND IF SHE USED GOOD JUDGEMENT AND NOT WENT ALONG WITH EVERYBODY ELSE AND VOTED FOR THE WAR,AND IF SHE DIDN’T GO ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE AND DENOUNCE THE MICH AND FLA PRIMARIES THEN SPEWED ABOUT HOW PEOPLE WERE DISINFRANCHISED BECAUSE SHE NOW NEEDED THE VOTES,THEN,MAYBE SHE WOULD HAVE HAD A HILL OF BEANS TO BE THE DEM NOMINEE,AND MAYBE PRESIDENT..
P.S.,AND IF SHE ONLY MANAGED HER MONEY AND FUNDS RIGHT AND NOT BE IN DEBT AND LOOK FOR OBAMA TO BAIL HER NON-BUDGETING NO HAVING SKILLS OUT,THEN MAYBE SHE WOULD HAVE HAD THE NOMINATION AND WON…

Interesting reporting! — What you see is Nader finally kicking in with the street-fighter style popularized by HRC months ago. — There is absolutely nothing that Obama can ever do that will please everyone, so he had better be pleasing himself. — I am afraid that the damage to our electoral system may be permanent. — It’s unfortunate that Mr. Obama had no choice but to throw a few of his own blows, but that finalized the deal, and forever shifted the news media’s focus. — It has been a very hairy political season, and it’s only getting stupider as it drags on. — I’m so sorry for us.

I liked the way Ralph Nader spoke. No rhetoric, just plain to-the-point talk.
I hope to hear more from him.

Ralph Nader – This has been a party political announcement on behalf of the has-been party.

Posted by: Amy Martin | June 25, 2008, 11:48 pm 11:48 pm

I think it is sad that Ralph Nader still has a platform to spew his distortion of the truth and ruin America, again. Get out of the way you Republican funded hack. It is so obvious that you are an arm of the RNC and a paid spoiler in a race that is to important to lose again. 2000= Bush
2004= Bush
And now in 2008 this weak man who does the bidding for the Republican party is trying to do it again. Come on, America, how many times will you fall for the same cheap trick?
Nader is a Racist, Nader is a stooge for the RNC and he is working against everything he supports with his attacks on Obama.
OH Ralph, why do you only say bad thing’s about Obama and not John McCain? Is it because he is paying you good money to disrupt another Presidential election?

Well said Nader! Obama is a Damn liar!

Posted by: Johanna | June 26, 2008, 12:34 am 12:34 am

people are upset with obama because of what he as accomplished through hard study and hard work..that bothers them, because it proves their fathers a liar.

Shelgirl, you wrote: “Someone explain to me why there are whites like Nader who always want to tell blacks how we must be to be black.” That’s interesting! Would you mind explaining why there are African-Americans who always want to tell conservative Republican African-Americans how they must be to be black. Both of these situations are wrong.

Posted by: James Danley | June 26, 2008, 2:11 am 2:11 am

im a 100% black man but Nader is right why doesnt Obama talk about the plight of the black community in specfics I’ll tell you why because he has to bankroll this campaign strictly off the backs of us hard working people I can’t afford to keep sending money to a campaign that has the potential of buying an election I would rather give in good faith and really try and get the money out the system because corporate people have found a new outlet to funnel their in with regular donations and can keep giving. We would not be talking about this if it was Hillary. Democrats we put the weaker candidate up because he can raise more money!!!!! Neo-liberals have hijacked the party

Posted by: Quintell | June 26, 2008, 6:19 am 6:19 am

Nader is divisive and knows it..!!! Any presidiential candidate must speak to the masses. Just so happens that the masses in the USA are WHITE! Obama’s raises issues that benefit us all. Now when it comes to who will benefit the poor and the oppressed, can we honestly say that both Nader and McCane will?
Nader is once again running to make $ off of donors. If he really wants to do America some good, get behind a winning candidate no matter what race he may be. Is not America the land of the free and the BRAVE? Obama has earned our respect just by how far he has gotten AND his message….

Posted by: savoymt | June 26, 2008, 6:40 am 6:40 am

Nader isn’t helpful. He already got Bush put into the White House. I don’t respect him that much anymore. Some of the things he says are true, but why does he go after Democrats, seeing that Republicans are the ones who commit more of the atrocities that he and his party decry. There are times when what he says is just plain unhelpful.

Posted by: allen_osuno | June 26, 2008, 7:20 am 7:20 am

Got to give it up for ralph. He is accurate about Obama. He’s earned my vote. Enough of the Socialist Lawyer and Liberal Cactus. Two party rule is killing this country.

Posted by: troy | June 26, 2008, 7:55 am 7:55 am

And Ralph Nader is relevant how? Go away, Ralphie, your bitchin and moaning is getting really, really old.

Posted by: DaveM | June 26, 2008, 8:25 am 8:25 am

Nader just tells it like it is. A lot of people don’t like to hear the truth. I am very disappointed in the way too many Demos caved in to the piper in order to show how “accepting” they are of another race. Obama is nothing more than a pied piper. I knew I wouldn’t vote for Obama when he first showed up in my state luring the college kids.

Posted by: Olive Lohrengel | June 26, 2008, 8:30 am 8:30 am

Nader’s work in automobile
safety has not convinced
people he can do good work
in politics.
He’s unsafe in any elective
office.

Posted by: anon | June 26, 2008, 9:14 am 9:14 am

Nader is a perennial nuisance
candidate for POTUS.
He may hurt Dems by siphoning
some votes away.

Posted by: anon | June 26, 2008, 9:22 am 9:22 am

Nader is calling it correctly. Obama is a genious. He knows that by him playing the race card will allow him to guilt the American public to vote for him. More peolpe will vote for Obama just because he is black than those who will not. I hope more will vote based on his positions than his race.

Posted by: Jack | June 26, 2008, 9:50 am 9:50 am

So what, Nadar has “black” ancestry and genes to be an expert on “speaking black” ? This is the most idiotic verbal vomit I have ever heard…
By the way, Obama was raised by a white mother and 2 white grandparents which undoubtedly would have affected the way he speaks and perceives life…
duh !

Posted by: nerakami | June 26, 2008, 9:52 am 9:52 am

Nader needs to get a life…. he is old news and really can not be taken seriously. Some other poster suggested he go to a rest home. I wholeheartedly agree! He will do anything to get some time in the news. Bitterness is such an ugly trait in a man.

Posted by: Mrs. Tiggywinkle | June 26, 2008, 10:42 am 10:42 am

@Nader: Should Obama wear oversized pants and his baseball cap on crooked? How can a self-described progressive hold the view that a man can’t be educated, classy and black all at the same time.

Posted by: X marks the spot | June 26, 2008, 11:23 am 11:23 am

I was never of fan of Ralph Nader. In this case, he’s 100% correct about Obama. He’s a stooge of corporate interests. All this pretty talk of “new politics” is just cover for corrupt, Chicago-style politics as usual.

Posted by: Juju | June 26, 2008, 3:37 pm 3:37 pm

Awww…sad little liberals mad at each other. I love it! Oh, Ralphi boy didn’t lose you the election in 2000…all “Fat-Boy” Al Gore had to do was win his home State. You know why “Fat-Boy” didn’t win his home state? Because people in Tn know a fat whinny weenie boy when they see one :)
Keep it up liberals…the last thing you are going to hear is John McCain saying “…so help me God” and becomming the next president of the US. Love it :)

Posted by: Tony | June 26, 2008, 4:53 pm 4:53 pm

The implication of “talking white” is that all black people are the same and share the same politics. Nader is trying to appeal to blacks– by trying to “talk black.” You have to give him credit though for having found a way into the media, because they are intent on ignoring third party candidates. I don’t think it really matters, most people this year know the stakes are too high NOT to vote for Obama.

Posted by: mona | June 27, 2008, 10:01 am 10:01 am

Barack Obama flip-flops on everything I liked about him. The democratic party is hoping that people like me have no other option except for Obama and McCain, but we do have another option, Ralph Nader. Say anything you want about him being a spoiler but the position he had 20 years ago is his position today. Truth is the easiest position to make and hold and Barack has flip-flopped on truth and decided to go to route of popularity and that we have no other choice. I’m proving him wrong and voting for Nader.

Posted by: michael | July 8, 2008, 6:27 am 6:27 am

Democrats and Republicans have let us down. Wake up America! Ralph speaks for all people of ALL RACES. Look at the issues with an open mind. Stop bashing the man who has done so much for US! Politics is dirty and politicians have shown time and time again their policies leave the average American in the dust.
What is our breaking point?
GO RALPH NADER!
