Obama Calls for More Responsibility from Fathers at Church Speech

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: Barack Obama used the Fathers Day holiday to push the message of the parental responsibility – singling out fathers needing to step up to the plate within their families.

"We need fathers to realize that responsibility does not end at conception," Obama said to the Apostolic Church of God church in Chicago, "What makes you a man is not the ability to have a child – any fool can have a child, that doesn’t make you a father – it’s the courage to raise one that makes you a father."

The Illinois senator said that too many fathers in the African American community are MIA in their families – acting like boys rather than men – and the foundations of the family and the community has suffered. Obama – himself a father of two – laid out three areas where fathers must parent better: by setting high expectations for their children, instilling the value of empathy, and passing on the value of hope.

Obama used his own presidential run as an example of demonstrating high expectations in excellence to children.

"People would come up to me and say ‘oh Barack, we love you man, we’re rooting for you but we just don’t think that a black man can be elected president.’" Obama recalled of the early days of his candidacy, "We had already defeated ourselves before we even started. We didn’t set high enough expectations for ourselves, we believed that somebody else can do it but we can’t do it. And that filters down to our children."

Senator Obama has been known in the past to preach a tough love message to parents – and reiterated many of the same themes in parenting before the predominantly African American community today

"Chris Rock had a routine. He said some-too many of our men, they’re proud, they brag about doing things they’re supposed to do. They say ‘Well, I- I’m not in jail." Well you’re not supposed to be in jail!," Obama exclaimed, "Don’t brag about that. You know, so we’re glad that you’re in the home, but engage your child."

Obama said that Washington has a responsibility as well to fathers – like rewarding fathers with a large Earned Income Tax Credit, and getting rid of the financial penalties imposed on married couples.

Seated in the front pew were Obama’s wife Michelle Obama and his two daughters Malia and Sasha. This was the first time the Obama family has attended church since formally cutting ties with their controversial Chicago church, Trinity United on May 31.

Obama – who received a poem for Fathers Day from his youngest daughter – joked that he had asked his wife why Fathers day wasn’t as big as Mothers Day.

"She said ‘let me tell you, everyday is Fathers day. Every day you’re getting away with something. You’re running for president; don’t talk to me about it!’"

Jj– I also suggest the same for McCain. Let’s try to dry the wells of each candidate and see which one goes first.
Or how about we do neither and stop the stupid games (Operation chaos anyone?) and try to have an honest debate.
It’s silly to me that the Republicans used to talk about honor and dignity so much but when it comes to the very democratic principles that this country is founded on (Yes I know it’s a republic but a republic can be a form of a democracy, cross off talk point #2)they seem ready to play games with it.
Let’s all try to grow up and have an honest discussion.

I think that if I was as anti-Obama as some of you, and he delivered such an eloquent and right-on speech as he just did, I would be struggling to come up with something intelligent to say too.
None of you have.
Not one comment has attacked any of the points he made.
Not one of you can address the CONTENT of his speech.
You attack him and his character instead.
Does that make you all feel real good? Good, cause it makes me laugh.

What’s important is not always voting blue (Democratic) or red (Republican), but red, white, and blue (what is best for America). Rookie U.S. Senator Obama, who is too far left, and who showed very poor judgement following Racist Pastor Jeremiah Wright for two decades, is bad for America.

I was at the church this morning when Obama spoke. Barack was great. What he said was a support for all fathers who are doing what they are supposed to do. His message was well-received by a church that has for many years supported good family values. The pastor has been married for over 30 years. His dad (who was the pastor) has been married for nearly 60 years. They have been good fathers and grandfathers. The negative messages of these various bloggers — they just don’t know what they are talking about.

Posted by: T McGee | June 15, 2008, 6:17 pm 6:17 pm

Obama laid out areas where fathers must parent better: “by setting high expectations for their children”….yet Obama cannot lick smoking and overlooks any dangers to his children by second hand smoke. This is a SMALL THING for his children and their health so how can we as Americans ask for a BIG THING a more important thing for our nation. Obama also said that
“too many fathers in the African American community are MIA in their families”, why again is he just singling out black people…Is Obama just interested in black people…why can’t he say too many fathers are MIA in America and not single out just the blacks—-we are a melting pot of people of all walks of life and yet his continues to direct his messages toward just the “black race”. This new church must be just for blacks and that is why only the reference for blacks?

“Fathers step up to the plate”. What does that mean? Are women really willing to give up overwhelming legal advantages in courts when that man who does step up to the plate hits a home run? Meaning, that if a man is ultimately a true father, sets good examples and provides for his children and the mother by the way decides to leave for whatever personal reason, she is going to try to limit as much as possible a fathers contact with her child. And why? Because he stresses me out? He did not care for my needs, “stepping up to the plate” is trite, simplistic, inflammatory and does not acknowledge women’s 50% contribution to total failures of families. So when women refuse to acknowledge this they will remain confused, alone and bitter.

look i am not an obama supporter but…first of all i agree that obama’s 20 year history of attendance at trinity church was a problem, especially by involving his young impressionable children. to me this does bring to mind poor parental judgement issues. HOWEVER, in all fairness he has rebuked his church. and yes, i agree with him on this point, too many aa fathers are absent in their role, that message is necessary and has been for a very, long time. however if you or i hillary or mccain brought this issue up we would be accused of racism so we have a long way to go. i agree this is a very important discussion for obama to engage in. i hope to see more accountability versus victimhood entering into the discourse. this is a good start, kudos to obama.

To all the Obama-despisers on this site: I understand some of you are die hard ‘W’epublicans, McCain supporters or disappointed Clinton Democrats. But when you feel you must attack everything Senator Obama has to say, even something universally championed like his call for ‘real’ fatherhood, you start to sound like a broken record with almost nothing of value to add to the debate. If you must be hateful/contrarian/skeptical/whatever, at least have the common sense to pick your battles. But please… keep at it if you must. You ultimately make the rest of us look and sound better.

Barack Obama’s father abandoned his family when he was only two and I bet he missed having a father around and knows that is a grief and loss. Unfortunately, over 74% of African American babies are born to unwed moms and many do not have a relationship with a dad.
Nothing is more important than having a loving family around a child and that includes a dad. This is one thing I will agree with Obama on. Dads needs to be responsible with love and support.

A Very Important Statement-
QUIT using Obama’s church against him.
I grew up in Philly, then moved to Texas. I know FIRSTHAND that racist things have been said and done in churches across this country.
“America chickens coming home to roost”, well let me tell all you folks who decided in the last 2 years to be political news junkies… We have done things that are not so nice across this globe. Didi you expect the mainstram media folks to just broadcast that on your nightly news?
Those of us that read NUMEROUS papers, from NUMEROUS countries and have for MANY YEARS know the context of Rev. Wright.
My grampy is a Vietnam Vet, I got my investigation skills from him. (Special Ops Marine, might I add) Even he says the Reps are so full of horse manure these days, it makes him sick. He knows the racism of this country, and he says some of the black men he fought with were the must humble and sincere of all in Vietnam.
It aggravates he and I when we read these blogs and see such horrific comments because they came from a black man in a “black” church.
grampy doesn’t understand that I’ll get censored and deleted if I type what he says. Let me tell you, he has never had a problem with a MAN or a WOMAN being a president, but he does have a problem with another Republican president.
Grampy sees racism as the bottom line in many of these posts and it ###### him off- he did not fight for freedom to read these things from the folks who live in the country he fought to protect.
Let your disrespect show… The more he reads, the more of his Vietnam vet buddies we recruit to vote for Obama.
(My grampy is smiling, but still aggravated I couldn’t type exctly what he said…. ( he doesn’t get the whole jist of being deleted yet, he just says “Well, why would they do that, it’s free speech!”

I’m sure that someone in the government would know if BO wasn’t qualified to be president of the US because of his citizenship. He wouldn’t be the prresumptive nominee because the Democratic Party would lose again. Some of you think that you are so smart trying to come up with something someone would know. So this leaves a smear attack to get uninformed people to waste time considering nonsense instead of issues. It also leaves a massive government cover-up by the government.
Another point. I nave been reading these comments for several weeks now. It seems like there alot of false information being spread. Lastly, if you don’t know what BO is about go to his website.

I’m sure many Hillary supporters were voting for her because she’s a woman. I’m also sure that many of McCain supporters are voting for him because he’s a white guy. But have you asked any supporters of Hillary or McCain why they support them? The thing is, people support candidates for a variety of reasons, but even if the reason seems trivial doesn’t mean the candidate isn’t qualified. But it appears that you believe only Obama deserves that level of scrutiny. I personally think McCain is itching to be president to avenge being a POW in Viet Nam. This is his way of getting back at countries we have military conflicts with.

McCain opposed it because our military is voluntary one and soldiers will leave after 3 years. with McCain’s bill benefits goes up based on the year you work. In fact you can transfer the benefits to your spouse and children.
Will you be happy if you get the same Social Security benefits after working for 40 years like someone worked only 3 years.
Obama supported because of the election and loves to spend it. McCain opposed it even he is a nominee. That is the kind of leadership we are looking for.

More responsibility….
So when is Obama going to start taking responsibility for some of his own actions? Like some of the company he has kept over the last couple of decades??
“Oh, that’s not the Reverend Wright I knew….”
“Oh, that’s not the Tony I knew…….”
“Oh, that’s not the Father Pfleger I knew…………”
And the biggest one yet to come:
It’s all Hillary’s fault that I didn’t win the election…………………
I think this man needs to start owning up to some of his own shortcomings before he starts handing out advice to others about accepting responsibility…

Posted by: Lee | June 16, 2008, 12:55 am 12:55 am

I am from Florida and like a tons of other Floridians voted in the Democratic primary. Then Obama did everything he could to prevent our voice from being heard. He will not win Fla in November. Disaffected Democrats like me will be deciding that if Obama didin’t want us to vote in January, we won’t offer him our vote in Nov. There is a movement for us to not vote in the election, since we do not want to vote for McCain and Obama does not want us either.

Answer #1: If that’s the type of church/pastor it/he is/was, why did he sit there for 20 years and take guidance from this “hurtful” man for 20 years? (If you’re going to turn this around and blame it on the Reverend, I guess you have a problem with accepting responsibility as well)
Answer #2: His statement regarding Father Pfleger was made in 2004 or thereabouts, when he claimed that he was one of his top three spiritual advisers, and “the keeper of his moral compass.” And exactly what truth is it you’re trying to say was eminating from this man of the cloth’s mouth on that Sunday morning at Trinity? Whether it was true or not, I feel safe to say, would be a matter of opinion, as I don’t ever remember Senator Clinton saying she was “entitled” to anything because she was white.
Answer #3: As for regretting the house deal, I notice he is still living there. Seems a little strange because for some reason he felt the need to donate the campaign fundraising dollars that Rezko provided him to charity.
I don’t recall mentioning or promoting McCain at all in my post above, but if you feel the need to defend Obama by doing so yourself, be my guest……..

Posted by: Lee | June 16, 2008, 1:22 am 1:22 am

C’mon people. I’m not an Obama supporter but I can’t believe you’re attacking Obama on encouraging black men (or any man for that matter) to step up to the plate when it comes to
their children. I also don’t doubt Obama’s committment to his girls any more then I do George W, McCain, Hillary , Edwards or any other politician who every 4 yrs has to endure this type of grueling schedule.
I think we should stick to the issues and this is an issue neither Democrats or Republicans should have a problem with.

Posted by: alpaig | June 16, 2008, 1:29 am 1:29 am

When Obama stands there in his first big “race” sppech and says this man has been his “spiritual advisor,” “father figure,” and “mentor” for 20 years, it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out that words like that mean Obama looked to this man for guidance, support and advice. Does not the word “Mentor” in and of itself mean someone you wish to emulate????? So how can you expect anyone to believe that he never “likened” himself or his views to Wright’s. Please get over your brainwashing long enough to figure that one out.
And as for #2, I’ve heard these points made so often I’m tired of hearing them myself, but what does entitlement have to do with Hillary saying she does better with white, blue collar voters in Kentucky and West Virginia? How often have I heard Obama’s people say how much of the African-American votes he receives, so doesn’t that indicate a belief on their part that he is “entitled” to their votes because he is part A-A? Race is a two-way street, and goes both ways.
And I really don’t care what he does with his house, I just said it was strange he didn’t feel the need to unload the house like he did Rezko’s campaign donations. But I wouldn’t be rolling up the moving van just yet if I were Obama.

Posted by: Lee | June 16, 2008, 1:54 am 1:54 am

You’re right about that one.
Obama was not going to get my vote from day one, but at that point in time, it obviously had nothing to do with Reverend Wright, Father Pfleger, Tony Rezko, his race (I supported and voted for Jesse Jackson in the 1988 primary, so don’t even go there), or his unwillingness to answer tough questions when asked.
No, at that time it was because he only had been in the Senate for two years, had made a well-received speech at the 2004 Convention, and other than that had absolutely nothing to qualify himself for the highest office in this country. He was making a lot of big speeches that sounded good, but the more I listened, the more I realized there was not much content there. As a matter of fact, I used to think the same thing whenever good old George W was campaiging.
And I’m an animal lover, so I’m not much for beating dead horses.

How dare Obama criticize fathers after dragging his children to United Trinity Church of Christ for Twenty years.
Reverend Wright was the family’s pastor. Pastor Pfleger the racist father was Obama’s “compass in life”.
Obama has nerve to comment about being a good father. Tell me he’s kidding.

Posted by: Al from NJ | June 16, 2008, 4:16 am 4:16 am

Senator Obama is only going to attract far left leaders and kids of the Democratic Party.
He is not the norm. What American is truly proud of Obama. He has no military record nor does he mention the proud soldiers of our country.
For him to approach anyone that is a proud American will be difficult.
Obama is not the “typical” American guy.
He didn’t win this primary election fairly that is for sure and will most likely not win the general election in November.
Americans have seen his poor campaign tactics, his associations and his silencing voters in Florida and Michigan. Millions of Americans are not going to forget Rev. Wright’s vicious attacks on whites and Senator Clinton. Millions will not forget the rally of Nation of Islam leaders held by Louis Farrakhan with over 20,000 Muslims attending. Rezko and Father Pflager, one a criminal and one a racists, will not be overlooked either. Florida and Michigan voters are completely disgusted with Obama and his ignoring their voices.
What American can truly be proud of Obama?
His VP will have to defend Wright, Rezko and Father Pflager on the stage with him.
Democrats have been jumping ship but the media isn’t covering it properly.
I don’t think that I am the only one completely embarrassed of Obama as the Democratic nominee.
Lastly, Obama will lose this election because no one really knows about the “elephant in the voting booth” : the impact of race. There will never be accurate polls until the day of the election.
Women are not being honest, kids won’t show up and the race factor is an unknown.
Obama will loose by a land slide.
Wake up America!

Why doesn’t Obama talk about his father?
His father was a “non practicing” Muslim. Is he afraid that he will have to discuss this matter with America?
Why doesn’t the media ask him about his father?
He wrote a book “dreams from my father”.
What is he afraid of?

AL from Nj and Rick from PA…..you make interesting comments. Rather difficult to retort not knowing your life story. A skewed perception can sometimes be bourne out of one experiences in life or sometimes deliberately….not sure which one is applicable. As I have followed the US election very closely for the first time as an outsider…the revealed American psyche has been the most troubling revelation to me. How divorced it is from the reality of the world we live in and almost narrowed down to the neighbourhood street, or a few blocks at the most. Reminds me of the Crucible by Arthur Miller.

Posted by: kojo | June 16, 2008, 5:14 am 5:14 am

This one comment tells it like he believes it…
“We can’t simply write these problems off to past injustices,” Obama said Sunday. “Those injustices are real. There’s a reason our families are in disrepair … but we can’t keep using that as an excuse.”
I guess us “whiteys” in the room know what he meant. This man is so divisive, and yet he keeps passing the buck, and most of the press just leaves out the parts that show him for what he is.

It is also amazing how Obama Supporters try to shut down people by calling names and insulting them when pertinent issues/questions are raised. Not so fast, buckeroos – we have a right to those answers and we will keep asking them until Obama man up and answer them. lol.

As for registering young and black voters, the key is to get them to vote.
Registration, as proven in past elections, does not necessarily represent votes that will be cast.
Right now, voters who are over 50 represent about 51% of those who will vote in the next election.
Hence, we who are over 50 will elect the next President, not the youth or the black voters.
So, Obama supporters, keep pounding at John McCain’s age in a detrimental and disrespectful manner.
We are listening.
We are already registered.
And, we vote.

Posted by: Jayhawk | June 16, 2008, 10:18 am 10:18 am

Jay. If anyone is targeting someone’s age it is Mccain on Obama.

Posted by: marie | June 16, 2008, 10:21 am 10:21 am

Marie,
While I have heard reference from the McCain camp about Obama’s inexperience versus that of McCain, I don’t recall Obama’s age being specifically targeted as a point of concern.
My point was that continual reference to John McCain’s age will prove to be a mistake by Obama supporters as it will be labeled as age discrimination and unify voters over 50.
And, while I am an “independent” and do not necessarily support John McCain or many of his positions, I will most certainly vote against Barack Obama as I disagree with virtually all of his positions.
The same old dilemma…vote for bad or worse…

No disrespect to Hillary Clinton supporters but why are they still making the point of being her supporters. This post is about Obama and the race is between Obama and McCain, we all know that anybody who is still supporting Hillary is not going to vote for Obama and I think most people are tired of this bickering. I think that Hillary supporters at this point should just vote for john or not vote at all, whatever they choose. I think its clear this revolution thing against Obama is not going to work, with a supposed 18 million supporters there is no way she can or should be broke. This is gop run, they are pulling the strings on this and it wont work. This post was about Obama in the church not even about the campaign so why would a Clinton supporter be on here wasted space asking questions that they know the answer does not matter one bit. Why dont you guys run a post for petition to help pay her pay the million she owes to Mark Penn. I just dont get what is the point , what do you want from him , a lot of her supporters wanted him burned alive from the start and not they pretend that he has to answer questions and they will somehow make an fair and impartial judgment about voting for him yeah right.

No the trouble is in republican land and they know it.Check the last congressional elections in IL, LA and MS. All republican seats in republican strong holds, yet democrats won every seat. Those seats had been held by republicans for a total of approximately 70 years. So americans know that republicans have ruined our great nation and they will be vanquished in November

Oh, yeah, sure. This is this phony hypocrite’s logic: He sells the Dreams of His Fathers. His father abandoned his family, and this the kind of dreams he has been telling people. Now, it is convenient for his political ambition, he wants black fathers stay in their families. You cannot have both ways, phony. Retract that phony story you have been selling, and give back the $4 million dollars you have made, last year alone, by selling a lie.

INDIANAPOLIS — He hasn’t yet won the Democratic nomination for president, let alone the November general election. But already Illinois Sen. Barack Obama says he has some renovation plans for the White House.
“I have sworn that we’re taking out the bowling alley in the White House and we’re putting in a basketball court,” he said, according to a pool press report of his visit this afternoon to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle, Ind., today.”
As usual an Obama supporter is WRONG or LYING. Obama made the statwement back in April in Indiana.

Olbermn3 you and whoever you are talking about could not get Hillary to be the democratic nominee let alone out of debt and not your movement think you guys can band together get Obama out of office and then elect who you want next time around. With all due respect, I think Mrs. Clinton would have made a better president than McCain and no matter who would have won I would have voted democratic but not your movement you people knew from the start it was all or broke and knew months ago you were going to do your best and destroy the democrats. There are people a lot smarter and on the government payroll who knows how to play you and your group and thats exactly what they are doing, just your buddy rush telling his republican supporters to vote for Hillary. Your group and movement will insure that they screen candidates backers before they endorsed and how scared do you think either party will be before they endorsed another women anytime soon. This movement, puma thing, or whatever new name you guys come up with it is the work of high schoolers who didnt make the team. To teach Obama supporters a lesson you vote for McCann and side with the gop , to make things worse you guys first blackmail then threaten and then go all over TV to brag about it. Your movement will only prove what they were saying about Hillary months ago in that she was willing to destroy the party in her quest for president and the damage to her reputation will go down worse than anything you guys can dream against Obama. Pick a side as you have already done and leave it at that, why stick and thumb your noses at the world like kids because you dont get what you want.

I have nothing against Bho, nor anything to do with whatever you are talking about puma – sounds like a Bho.
Bho might turn out to be a terrific president, but there is no reason to believe so, or not to believe so. He is simply a blank, an uncertainty, a known unknown.
If you want to gamble your country’s future on a few feel-good speeches, it’s your choice.
McCain probably will most likely get more things done, collaborating with the congress, than Bho would ever get even close. Bho has no, absolutely zero, record of any legislature accomplishments nor working with others to get anything done. More than likely, anything, the far left ideology, that he proposes will be filibustered by the Reps.
You have gambled for 8 years. You can gamble another 4 years, if you wish.

LeeLee07 thats a lot of supporters your movement have, so I ask why is she in debt. Its a little creepy too, either some of it is made up by the gop (my top choice) or you guys are the cheapest bunch of supporters I have ever heard of. If her 18 million supporters gave just two dollars she will be more than out of debt. But as she brags she got the uneducated votes , which means lower pay which somehow means not even a buck 50 for her campaign. So all those websites and not one of them has come up with a idea of paying off her debt, thats says gop all over it just like the republicans like you posting as democrats.

I think there were good points in Obama’s speech, since, someone else wrote it. I tend to agree that Obama will say and do anything to get elected. Remember, he subjected his daughters ALL of their lives, to Trinity Church under the anti-white, Jeremiah Wright. You can’t tell me that this had no affect on his daughters, however, he allowed them to remain in this church and even be baptized by the bigot Wright. I’m sorry, just like ALL the other speeches by Obama, this one too, is coming from an “empty suit with no substance”.
