Obama Clinches Democratic Nomination; Polls Close in South Dakota
ABC News’ Karen Travers Reports: According to the ABC News Delegate Tracker, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has the 2,118 delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination for president and is expected to win additional pledged delegates in the final primary contests and further superdelegate endorsements Tuesday.
The Obama campaign had been pushing uncommitted superdelegates to make their endorsement public before the polls close in South Dakota and Montana so the Illinois senator could cross the delegate threshold with the delegates he picks up in those states.
Obama is not wasting any time pivoting to the general election. The Illinois senator will address supporters tonight at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, MN, the same arena where Republicans will gather in September to nominate Sen. John McCain as their nominee.
Despite winning just three the last eight nominating contests, Obama has far outpaced Hillary Clinton in picking up superdelegate support which allowed him to continue to build his lead and inch closer to the DNC’s magic number.
Obama has picked up 61 superdelegates since the Kentucky and Oregon primaries on May 20, while Clinton has just seven in that same timespan. Since Clinton’s 10-point win in Pennsylvania, Obama has picked up 133 superdelegates to Clinton’s 26.

800 votes are up for grabs until they are cast at the ballot box in Denver.
Obama’s numbers won’t improve and he won’t win.
If dems want the white house supers will vote Hillary in Denver. If they don’t then voters will be happy to oblige.

McCain already sliced, diced, and minced Obama tonight. Obama is getting trashed in South Dakota. The party I belong to is nominating a guy losing by 30%-40% in his own primaries?

Imagine that, the “presumptive nominee” is getting crushed in South Dakota. He is just not supported by the greatest majority of Democratic supporters. You can scream delegate math all you want, but when you do it just shows that you are stuck on stupid.

Mr. Clyburn, you stated that “Bill Clinton said some things that made us uneasy” as a way to explain that his wife shouldn’t be on the ticket.
With all due respect, sir, “whitey” isn’t exactly thrilled with the video coming out Trinity Church. Should the race be about saving the country? Or have 18 million Obama voters been misled??

you can’t handle the war in Iraq now you want to start a war in your own back yard. Don’t you think its stupid. This is the kind of things that need to be change in America, when things don’t go your way you want war. What happen to discussion and compromise. Of course some people are like you that bitterness will always be with you if you allow it.
God Bless you and you should be thankful that you have Senator Obama to be your President. Just be grateful having a person that will look after your best interest than republican dragging the whole world into disaster.

Hillary will carry South Dakota. Obama is not popular here and many people question him and his motives. I voted for Hillary and think she has been crucified by Obama, the DNC, and the Media. I will now vote for McCain in November, I cannot bring myself to vote for Obama. I don’t even know where he stands on the issues. Its sad that America has been brainswashed by his rhetoric. What bothers me most is that he wants to befriend the president of Iran, who just stated yesterday that he wants to destroy Israel. This is scarry America. Hillary supporters, we have the power to stop Obama from destroying our beloved country. Lets all (17 million) vote for McCain in November. Lets put a stop to this nonsense called Obama!

Hey did you notice that Obama got crushed in South Dakota. The last time the second choice of the majority of Democrats landed the nomination, well it was a guy named McGovern. A person from the liberal elite. Imagine that. Guess what’s going to happen to Obama? Same thing my friend, same thing. I’m going to enjoy the h*ll out of watching the Obama Zombies get crushed.

You over the top Hillary supporters are a hoot. Seriously, you really keep thinking that the superdelegates will switch sides come primary time? This is over, they want it over, the avg American wants this over. The better candidate won. Hillary had the nomination dropped at her feet and blew it on her own accord. Obama is an excellent candidate and will be a tough battle for McCain.
WestCoastMessenger? Really? You are that bitter? Geevil? How is Obama losing 30-40%? He won the popular vote, he won the delegate count… the only way Hillary could win was by pouting and holding her breath until the rules were changed…

These are Obama’s own words from his book “Dreams of my Father”
“I FOUND A SOLACE IN NURSING A PERVASIVE SENSE OF GRIEVANCE AND ANIMOSITY AGAINST MY MOTHER’S RACE”.
“I CEASED TO ADVERTISE MY MOTHER’S RACE AT ABOUT 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites”
“NEVER EMULATE THE WHITE MAN and brown men whose fates didn’t speak to my own. IT WAS INTO MY FATHER’S IMAGE, THE BLACK MAN, SON OF AFRICA, THAT I’D PACKED ALL THE ATTRIBUTES I SOUGHT IN MYSELF..”
“THAT HATE HADN’T GONE AWAY,” he wrote, blaming “WHITE PEOPLE- SOME CRUEL, SOME IGNORANT, sometimes a single face, sometimes just a faceless image of a system claiming power over our lives.”
This is the TRUE Obama and HIS True feelings about white people and all others who are not Black.
Obama’s HATE for whites (His Words} “Hadn’t Gone Away” and never will. This man is so filled with Hate and some people want to trust him in the White House!
This is 1 Huge Reason Why Hillary Supporters Will NEVER Support Obama!

Even in these 2 last primaries, Hillary has more popular votes than Obama and Obama is claiming victory on a night when he loses in popular votes in the last 2 primaries …
Hillary has 33571 votes and Obama has only 27661. Hillary won in the popular votes in these last 2 primaries alone and Obama is claiming victory?
Obama is a joke …

Obama is thinking all who helped him but I don’t hear him saying anything about all the news media who backed him from the beginning. Hillary had to fight the networks, satellite, and cable news. Tonight, Charlie Gibson was saying all the things that took down Hillary. He failed to mention the biggest… him and all the news people who dogged her and watched everything she said and made a big deal out of nothing each time. For the pass months, the news media have been trying to get her to give up.
The news people gave Obama a free pass. What ever he did or said that he shouldn’t have, they made sure it didn’t go far. Mitchell said very negative things but our good honest news people covered it all over. No wonder their ratings with America is in the gutter. It’s odd that no other person has been given a free pass in the run for such a high office, why him?

actually, Hillary is only winning one of the primaries. We dont’ know the other one and these aren’t exactly states that the Democrats plan to win in the GE anyway. Furthermore, look at his lack of campaigning in these states, he already moved on. If you really want to compare popular votes, count the full numbers…
Obama Sore Loser
17,745,430 48.2% 17,616,750 47.8%
The popular vote argument is somewhat akin to claiming a hockey victory based on shots on goal, not the scoreboard, but it is all that Clinton has remaining.

Hillary has received the most votes but the stupid Democrats who made up these rules for the Primary and those super delegates who couldn’t be loyal or do what is right for the Country and Party, we will have an unknown running for the President of the USA.
Democrats were worried that the Party would lose the support of blacks if Obama was refused. What about women? Hillary was treated like a sub human by some of the democrats. I think all women should resent how the network news and the Democratic Party has treated Hillary. There have been some news people who have said things about her that if they had been said about Obama or any black, they would have been fired.
Get your news from the BBC.

TO BE A GOOD DEMOCRAT OR TO BE A GOOD AMERICAN—John McCain is not the same as George Bush; in fact a few years ago he was going to leave the Republican party. The democrats will control Congress so there is no need to worry about Roe v Wade or ultra conservative justices being appointed to the Supreme Court. Iraq-nobody will be able to pull out all the troops within 16 months; we will have a presence there just like we do in other foreign countries. We need to earn the respect back of the American citizens and world leaders by electing the right person to be the President of the United States; he/she should have demonstrated good judgment, honesty, and integrity—. Hillary 08 or McCain—Country first, then party

Hillary supporters don’t sit it out or write her in or vote Indie…..VOTE McCAIN, SO WE KEEP OBAMA AWAY FROM THE STEPS OF THE WHITE HOUSE…AND HIS ANGRY WIFE TOO. Cindy McCain is probably very proud of this country and they have been foster parents and adopted one of their daughters. Why a vote for Obama may lead to more war and deaths, not less. If Obama had got his way and Saddam was still in power the West would be dealing with TWO major middle eastern powers on the brink or already in possession of nuclear weapons and thumbing their nose at the US. The facts on the ground now in Iraq is that the surge has been successful and the US is winning the war in Iraq. That is why Obama’s plan of pulling defeat out of the jaws of victory in Iraq is so idiotic. Al Qaeda is on the run in Iraq but if the USA retreats and turns Iraq over to them, Al Qaeda will have access to Iraq’s large oil reserves and thus the means and opportunity to attack us and attack us hard. Our Middle Eastern allies will have no reason to trust our word and abandon us. Not to mention the boost a withdrawal from Iraq will give to Iran, Syria and Hamas. Think WWIII, Obama and his supporters scoff at the threat Al Qaeda and the rest of their ilk poses to the security of the US and future of the Western World, If Obama is elected his defeatist policies will put us all at more risk of another 9/11 attack and even worse the blow up the middle east which will mean more will die, just like what happened in WWII when people thought Hitler could be appeased and were wrong, very wrong. Whats more, the killing fields of cambodia could be played out again in Iraq by Al Qaeda, Only this time the people murdered could be the very people that risked their lives to support the US. Question, if Obama wins, can you sleep well at night if you get what you want and this happens? I hope not.
P.S. If Obama had got his way and Saddam was still in power the West would be dealing with TWO major middle eastern powers on the brink or aleady in possesion of nuclear weapons and thumbing their nose at

Climate non-change we can disbelieve in. Nothing any president can do will head off the next 4 or 8 yrs of climate change and when the sea does not rise Obama will take credit for it.

dl..not all change is good….you got a house…you’re going to want to keep your interest and prop. tax deduction. Under liberal democratic control you will lose that.
Plus I don’t want Obama putting me in a burka and embracing his Muslim heritage, as he sayS he’ll do when the “winds of change start blowing”.
GO McCAIN!

It is not easy to tell people of threats and dangers they have been spared. The war put on notice regimes and conspirators who had harbored dark thoughts about America and who, in the course of the 1990s, were led to believe that terrible deeds against America would go unpunished. A different lesson was taught in Iraq. Nowadays, the burden of the war, in blood and treasure, is easy to see, while the gains, subtle and real, are harder to demonstrate. Last month, American casualties in Iraq were at their lowest since 2003. The Sunnis also have broken with al Qaeda, and the Shiite-led government has taken the war to the Mahdi Army: Is it any wonder that the critics have returned to the origins of the war?
Five months from now, the American public will vote on this war, in the most dramatic and definitive of ways. There will be people who heed Ambassador Crocker’s admonition. And there will be others keen on retelling how we made our way to Iraq.

To all Hillary supporters,
This is VERY IMPORTANT.
If you have not listen to her speech tonight in NY.
She asked you to go to her website because she would like to know what do you want her to do.
She wants to listen to her 18 millions supporters for her next step.
*** I suggested her to be Independent***
Thanks

Government is not the benevolent force that delusional Obamaites believe it is. Quite the contrary, government uses the force of law to seize money and property from the workers and uses it to feather the beds of a bunch of self serving bureaucrats and politicians. Little if anything is trickled back down to the people. In fact what’s left over, if anything, typically goes to a bunch of corrupt hanger ons and sycophants like Rezco. Obama’s Marxist friends and associates hate the free market and want to replace it with the all powerful force of the State. Problem is the track record of Marxist style run governments are not so good. Just look at the loss of freedom and millions of lives that were lost in an effort to create a “Utopian State” in the Soviet Union, Cuba, China and North Korea. The dead hand of a Marxist style government (that Obama’s friends believe in) is anything but benevolent. I ask you to listen closely to Obama and if you do, you will hear the echo of his friends Marxist beliefs in Obama’s flowery speeches. Don’t buy into it.

catleya honestly, Hillary will never go independent. First she would never win and secondly she is a true dem and cares about the party. By you wanting her to go independent is political suicide for her. Do you really want that for her.

Senator Obama,
You have often eloquently spoken of the ‘fierce urgency of now’. Since you now reasonably have more than the necessary number of delegates pledged and promised to you, it is time that you provided more specifics as to how and where you plan to lead this country. The broad strokes are there, and I approve, but in the upcoming national contest, specifics will be paramount.
You have no shortage of advisors and operatives to assist you in shaping your broad vision into a comprehensive plan of executive leadership. As a concerned citizen I have my own suggestions that would provide some solutions, to a number of the issues that appear to be of concern to most citizens; the economy, the environment, the war, and dependence on foreign oil.
I would propose that you apply that ‘fierce urgency of now’ to an energy policy that will have a significant impact toward solving the issues listed above. It is a matter of converting our nation, not only from the dependency we have on foreign oil, but to increase our independence from fossil fuels all together.
The technologies to accomplish this task are not decades away from practical use, not years or even months. The necessary technology to make this happen is here, now, researched, tested, and to some small degree applied in the real world. There is no state or territory of the United States that could not take advantage individually or in some combination; wind, solar, water or nuclear generated power. The active harnessing of these sources of power has been largely squandered for decades on a hopelessly small scale to have truly significant impact or induce mass production to reduce pricing and increase availability. The broader applications of such an energy policy that would put to the forefront a national program to utilize these unlimited sources of power are not limited only to centralized power plants. With relatively little effort and investment, individual homes and businesses can utilize current solar and wind technologies to produce much, if not all of their power on site, such buildings when empty would easily produce an excess of electricity that would be returned to the grid. Imagine a nation where every neighborhood and office complex is also a power station in their own right.
In addition to both these large and small generations of power, the use of fossil fuels to directly power individual non-commercial transportation must end. A national zero emissions vehicle act must be mandated with a clear preference for those vehicles produced that do not directly run on fossil fuels. To be clear, electric cars have been around for over a century. Technology a decade ago produced electric cars that would meet the needs of 95% of non-commercial drivers on a day to day basis. Today’s electric cars can increase that to 98% and add to it nearly 35% of commercial and 80% of governmental (non-military) needs.
The hydrogen economy remains elusive, there are grand technological gaps and while there must be acknowledgment and investment in the further development of such technology, our primary push must be on technology that can be brought to the market today.
Ethanol, as it is currently being produced and applied is a boondoggle. It is inefficient in production, and is a frightening waste of valuable farmland when food and feed prices are on the rise. The answer is to formally legalize growing and processing of industrial hemp, to be clear, industrial hemp does not contain enough THC to get anyone high even if they smoked it by the kilogram. The plant was a staple source of oils and fiber in this nation until 1937. Hemp is a much better feedstock for ethanol production, it can grow in a wider range of climates and conditions, and it can also be used as a source of food, oils, and fiber for cloth and paper.
Finally, there must be a massive effort in constructing new nuclear power plants, including breeder reactors to reduce and recycle waste from traditional reactors. You should seek to execute 20 new plants to come online within the first 4 years of your Presidency, and doubling that amount in the next 4 years. A difficult task, certainly, an impossible one, I think not. Much of what delays these plants going on line are understaffed and overly bureaucratic.
What is outlined here is further detailed in a legislative proposal that includes how such projects could be financed. To paraphrase John F. Kennedy when addressing why we should seek to do the impossible and send a man to the moon and return him safely to the earth, we do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard. We have the opportunity to lead the world in clean energy production and greenhouse gas reductions, not through treaties, but by example, which has ever been a strong suit for the US.
I am not so arrogant to think that this is an original idea, the implementation of such an energy policy in whatever form will improve the economy quickly, through production of goods, lower energy costs and the creation of several new industries. It will help the environment by reducing, drastically the amount of CO and CO2 pumped into the air on a daily basis. The war in Iraq is over many issues, but there can be no denying that much of our military interest and action in that region of the world is to keep the oil flowing. By reducing our oil usage, we make the area less powerful, less relevant from a military standpoint. The Middle East loses its ability to be a natural resource superpower. The benefits don’t end there; less smog means fewer related respiratory problems. New industries mean new jobs. New products open up new markets.
It is within our ability, as a nation, to be energy independent within a decade. Not only could we be energy independent, but using clean, renewable energy as our primary source of electric power for the nation. A decade is not an ambitious time line; the total cost of such a program would be less than half of what has been spent on the Iraqi invasion and occupation in the last 5 years. If the manpower, time, material, and funding supplied to that conflict had been applied to making us energy independent, it is quite likely we would already be there.
Senator Obama, whether you accept the details of this plan are not important, the premise is what I would like to hear more about from you. Energy independence is a necessity, from it, so much more flows that will benefit all of us. So congratulations on your nominee status and start telling us not just what you are going to do, but how you are going to do it.

I’m a UK observer of this process and can’t believe some of the hatred on here between Hillary and Obama supporters. It just brings to mind Jon Stewart’s question to Howard Dean a few months ago – This should be, by all accounts, a Democratic year; there has never been a more unpopular President, you’re picking up conservative House seats, the country wants change: what will you do to f*@k it up?
There is one unavoidable fact in any democracy: divided parties don’t win elections. And one essential for a successful democracy – if you lose, you suck it up and try again next time.
But if Hillary supporters think that not voting/voting McCain will help her run in 2012: if she gets blamed for Obama losing, she won’t get the nomination (and this kind of hatred will not help her avoid blame); and if McCain is a good president (not unthinkable) the political landscape might be changed so much by 2012 that you’ll wish you’d voted Obama: be careful what you wish for.

Are there that many racists out there? Obama and Clinton want the same thing and have often said that they would support whoever wins the nomination. Their political objectives and ideals are vitually the same so not to vote for Obama by Clinton supporters is either sour grapes (childish) or fear (racist). Get a grip and lets work together to get the democrats in the whitehouse and turn this country back around! A vote for McCain is a vote for the same! We NEED change!
