Obama, Clinton Talk Strategy and Debt

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos Reports: Sens. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., spoke by phone Sunday night, the first time the presumptive Democratic nominee and his former rival have exhanged words since their private meeting in Washington weeks ago.

Clinton and Obama discussed retiring Clinton’s over $10 million in campaign debt, a conversation Democratic sources called "constructive".

They also discussed their forthcoming joint fundraising appearance in Washington on Thursday and the first campaign appearance together in Unity, New Hampshire, on Friday.

Sen. Clinton conceded the Democratic race to Obama on Saturday, June 7, just four days after splitting the final two primary contests in South Dakota and Montana.

The pair held a secret meeting in Washington at the home of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a Clinton supporter, prior to Clinton’s concession but had not spoken since that time.

Sure Vanessa because it is okay to compromise your values to get your candidate in office.

I call it an investment. This country is in serious need of change. Paying off several millions and in exchange for the white house will do.
We can’t afford 4 more years of Bush policies.

We can’t afford 4 years of any attention seeking zealot who doesn’t know what he is doing either. I want a president not an icon with groupies like Scarlett Johanson, and Donatella Versace.

I think Obama will ask his fat cats to give Hillary money in exchange of her fat cats giving money to him.

Posted by: carl29 | June 23, 2008, 6:57 pm 6:57 pm

Obama is basically paying her to campaign for him for the next 5 months. Looking across a lot of polls Obama generally needs to be pulling in 10-15% more of the democratic base then he is right now to get him up to 85-90% of the party and an easy win November. If she can deliver that than $10 million dollars is a steal.

Posted by: jeremy | June 23, 2008, 7:01 pm 7:01 pm

They’ll probably end up doing a bunch of joint fundraisers splitting the money raised, or he’ll write her a nice letter. It’s unlikely that he’ll just cut her a check, and pretty unnecessary – why bother ticking off folks still sore at her when he can just ask other folks to help her in the interests of a united party?

WHENIT COMES TO CAMPAIGNING SHE KNOWS HOW TO GET THE POINT ACROSS TO THE VOTERS IF HE OBAMA DOESN’T TAKE HER AS VICE PRESIDENT THEN I KNOW HE HAS HIS BRAINS IN HIS FEET OR IS SITTING ON THEMSHE SHOULD BEE THE CANDIDATE NOT HIM

Posted by: Rose Szymanski | June 23, 2008, 7:16 pm 7:16 pm

How sickening. Mr. “Man-of-the-people” is going to defer millions in ‘donations’ meant for his campaign to Hillary’s debt? And you liberals condone that?
You people are such hypocrites.

Posted by: Chris McMullen | June 23, 2008, 7:29 pm 7:29 pm

The point is there is no point to all the bantering. Either you have two experienced people who will make changes in this country, or you will get the same crap we’ve had for the past 8 years. It’s no wonder we’re in a mess….it’s called denial and hiding your head in the sand until a crisis, then you pull your head out of your butt and get blinded by the sudden beam of light that overtakes your fuzzy brain.
So stop bickering about Obama and Clinton he said, she said and just go to the damn polls and vote out the dimwits that have been screwing us for the first decade of the 21st century.
thank you.

Posted by: sr s | June 23, 2008, 7:30 pm 7:30 pm

Chris McMullen,
Obama cannot defer his donations directly to Hillary. That’s illegal.
He can ask his donors to donate additional funds directly to Clinton. And his donors can choose whether they want to or not. And Obama can attend events to help Hillary raise funds.

People have gave according to candidates totals are over one-half a billion dollars. I wonder what has come of all that money in campaigning. While people which I am one are giving to help the candidates most can not afford it. So the candidates live like kings while we are paying over $4.00 a gallon for gas. After whoever gets into office the tax payers pay them a big salary and pay for their expenses. What do we get in return. A lot of promises but hardly ever any resulte.

Posted by: n912 | June 23, 2008, 7:36 pm 7:36 pm

As a democrat, I believe that unity is strength. Though Obama was and still is my choice for president, Hillary can help him to win the election. They should therefore map out a strategy that could help paying that debt off. After all Hillary spent the money a historic political process that has impacted democracy greatly in the history of US

Various news/media outlets have been putting the story out there that Hillary and Barack Obama are going to be making several campaign appearances together! What’s more, these same outlets (i.e., CNN, MSNBC, Newsweek, NYTimes, Washington Post, Mark Halperin, Eugene Robinson,… OK, you get the picture) are gleefully reporting that the two campaigns are coming together nicely for the higher purpose of doing everything that possibly can be done to elect the chosen nominee of the Democratic Party!
Wow!, I’ve been getting that thrilling sensation running up my leg since hearing the news. I just can’t wait for the first Tuesday in November to hurry up and get here so I can run to my polling place and vote vote vote, for Barack Obama. Gee, now that Hillary is going to make campaign appearances with him, I’ve suddenly become so excited about this election!

This is why we Democrats must unite, because McCain only views us as pawns in his game to win the presidency! And if we die…he wins!

VOTE FOR A GOOD CAUSE!
It won’t cost you a dime and will take only minutes of your time.
My nephew, Brian, underwent his first heart transplant at the age of 6 months in 1992. Good news is that he is now 16 years old and like most boys his age, he is a HUGE baseball fan (Yankees). Bad news is that he recently (6-19-08) had to undergo a second transplant surgery. So far, everything seems to be going well.
CAN YOU DO A GOOD DEED FOR BRIAN?
We’ve been asking if there is anything we can do for Brian. It seems like there’s so little we CAN do, either for Brian or his family. The one thing we were told by his mom was that he has been hoping that John Damon is selected for the MLB All-Star Team (American League – NY Yankees – Outfield). Let’s help him out!
Put a smile on this kid’s face! Go to http://www.mlb.com and hit ‘All-Star Game ’08 coverage-VOTE NOW’ in the upper right corner. In the window that appears, fill in your name, email, etc. and hit ‘VOTE NOW’. You will see a roster of names listed by position for American League players. ‘J. Damon’ is in the Outfield section, 3rd down in the left column. Leave all other positions and National League blank if you choose. Make sure you hit ‘Submit Vote’ on the National Link page. You can vote up to 25 times, but all votes must be received by midnight 7-2-08.
Pass this on to your friends and THANK YOU!!!

I just really want to urge all Hillary supporters not to vote for McCain. This is why and please research this information just like I did. If MccAIN is elected this will tip the balance of the Supreme court. This is scary as we can not go back ot the hanger days. This mea that theres a huge chance that Wade v Roe will be overturn. We women have worked so hard to overcome all these issues and we can not and must not go back. McCain voted agaist equal pay for us women. Thats a disgrace!!! I am a women, a mother and beloved wife and I must secure the future for all women. I have a doughter and I dont want goverment to tell her what to do. I know that like me, I was really hurt when Hillary lost!!! I know now that I must support Barack like she is. WE need to work hard with passion, dedication to elect Barack Obama. We must not give McCain a passing greade. He has been against women issues even before Hillary started running. The republcians think we are so stupid that we can not make up our minds. I will work my heart out to support Barack. I started by talking to friends and relatives of ther impact of having McCain as president and what would that mean to us women. Please get involved cantact your local democrat office or go to Barackobama.com
Kind regards,
Martha

Most of her supporters have clearly stated that she can get on bended knee and plead with us to vote for him but we must vote for the lesser of two evils and that is John McCain
———————
Good point, except you’re WRONG.
MOST of Hillary’s supporters – polls show at least 70% thus far – have stated that they will vote for Obama. And that’s right after the primary has ended.
Yes, there will still the militant, “I’ll shoot myself in the head to prove a meaningless point”, folks. But, and I hate to burst your bubble, you are not the majority.
The solidarity of 18 million all the ‘puma crowd’ keeps yapping about, is a fantasy. Most Dems would have been satisfied with either candidate.
So dress up in little puma costumes, kick, scream, and have a hissy fit if it makes you feel good. But the Dems are taking the White House back with or without you.

Posted by: Reality | June 23, 2008, 8:20 pm 8:20 pm

JANET, FINNALLY, I AGREE.
YOU ARE 100% RIGHT.
SO WHY IS SHE EVEN ASKING FOR THE MONEY SHE WASTED FROM THE CANDIDATE?
SHE SHOULD SUCK IT UP FOR THE GOOD OF THE PARTY. SHE CAN AFFORD IT AND WILL WRITE MUCH OF IT OFF ANYWAY.
THE PRIMARY CAMPAIGN IS PAST.
NOW ON TO A REFORM DEMOCRATIC WHITE HOUSE, SENATE, CONGRESS AND SUPREME COURT.
LET’S CLEAR THE CORRUPT OIL AND HALLIBURTON BUMS OUT.

Posted by: Janice | June 23, 2008, 8:22 pm 8:22 pm

Nothing Obama can do will ever make me want to vote for him. He’s flip flopped on more issues than McCain. He’s thrown his pastor, grandmother, and friends under the bus for his political reasons. No way I can vote for someone who can’t speak without being a puppet for other politicians behind the scenes. I was and still am a Hillary supporter who will vote McCain in November if I can’t write her name in.

Posted by: Dee-GA | June 23, 2008, 8:26 pm 8:26 pm

Martha, I’ve been screaming Supreme Court ever since Nixon … and you know I’ve found out that it really doesn’t matter. The justices that were appointed weren’t put there to create Roe vs Wade … many of them wise up in their old age.

Posted by: tiredtoo | June 23, 2008, 8:27 pm 8:27 pm

Yes. If a women vote for McCain they do not value women issues at its core. If they dont support Borack than theres is something deeper than just women issues. It wil be ashame for America if we vote for a candidate just base on what I hope its not the case. America is the example of the world and we should always lead with integrety and respect for others. How can we expect democracy in Iraq if we dont do whats right in our own American. Hello lets pactice what we so aften speack about justice for all. As a women I will never support McSane.

Melisa, I have always voted for who I think would be best for our country. Forget parties, I vote on the person, their qualities, the issues, policies. I’m not being fooled by the scare tactics of the Democrats saying that McCain will overturn Roe vs. Wade. There’s no way in the world that will happen. If I can’t write in Hillary in November I will proudly cast my vote for John McCain. Hillary was my very first choice, since she’s out I’ll write in her name if I can or vote McCain since he was my second choice. Obama was not and will not ever get my vote. How can people vote for another Jimmy Carter president? Have we not learned from our mistakes? McCain is nothing like Bush and he has the record to prove it. God Bless America.

Dee-GA, the sad thing is that so many of Obama’s supporters were not born in 1980 when we finally got rid of Jimmy Carter. Only those of us who are old enough can remember the 18% interest rates and our humiliation in the world at the hands of Iran. Only those of us who voted him in can know what a mistake that was.

Lucy, Is this the world we live in now? A person can’t laugh at something, can’t vote the way they choose, have an opinion about something…without it being racist? I find it rediculous all the “If you’re not for Obama, you’re a racist comments I’ve seen on the message boards for the past year or so. This election is becoming very much like it shouldn’t be. This election has come down to petty childish name calling if someone can’t twist the arm of another to make them vote the way they want, that is dividing people further.
People have their own opinions and reasons for not voting for Obama, let’s all respect one another as human being regardless of our difference of opinions.
If a qualified African American were running for President I’d be voting for him or her just the same as anyone else. Just so happens this year is not that year.

Let’s face it. These kinds of political deals happens across the board in politics. None of these politicians do anything without some reciprocity. Republicans do it. Democrats do it. It’s part of politics to get some things back for your political capital. If you don’t think it happens with the people you vote for then you are truly naive. Having said that, Obama will be much better for this country than McCain who is going to continue Bush’s policies. And Bush will go down in history as the WORST President ever.

Obama the agent for change, very interesting. Is this before he was working with and accepting huge sums of money from Resko? What about the very house Obama lives in now, a gift from Resko? The support from Exelon, $227,000, to rewrite a bill that would allow non-compliance of chemical leaks? Owes his start in politics to Resko/slumlord/muslim money. Yes – Obama should change!!!

Will Hillary pay off my bad investment debt too? And I’m completely serious. If she expects someone else to pay off her debt, then please, I’ll ask her to add my debt into her lump sum.

According to this research, America now has about 1,209 mosques, most of which were constructed very recently. Thirty percent of these mosques were built in the 1990s, and 32% were built in the 1980s. Other statistics show that in 1994, the total number of mosques in America was 962; in 2000, there was a 25% increase in this number…….These data show a natural parallel with the growing number of Muslims. For example, according to determinations made in 1994, the number of Muslims attending mosque services was 500,000; in 2000, this figure had increased to 2 million-an approximately 300% increase. A significant part of this number is composed of people who converted to Islam. The same research shows that about 30% of those worshippers are converts. According to these data, about 20,000 Americans accept Islam every year.44…………. The above figures are the result of research done before 9/11 and rely on data from the year 2000. In 2001, especially after 9/11, these figures have increased several fold.

Don’t forget, Hillary has a team of seven, looking into running an independent campaign. This would “for sure” any chance of Obama to win in November.

He can’t just cut her a check and pay off her debt. It’s against the law. He will do fund raisers for her and ask his donors to donate to her to reduce the debt. I’m an Obama supporter and donor and I will not donate one dime to her. It’s her fault that her campaign is in debt and one-third of her debt is owed to that sleaze Mark Penn. Besides, the DNC and the convention need the money more than Hillary does. She’s worth 100 million, she can pay off her own debt. Just send Bill out to make more speeches.

I tried posting a similar message in Huff Post- of course, the Obama robots censured the post- I was hoping that with Hillary’s gracious concession speech, her willingness to now come and campaign for Obama now after a greulling campaign would elicit a humble, gracious response from these OBOTS and Huff Post- I was mistaken- if they do not care and spite the 18.6 million die hard Dems AND they are confident they will win- I say to them and the DNC- not a dime or a dollar- let your Messiah sink or swim on his own.
We will take care of Hillary’s debt just fine.

Vanessa,
That is nice of you to let Obama do as he would like. You have an amazing control over the man, do you not. Here’s the deal. Obama pays off Hillary’s PRIMARY debt and Hillary sends Obama Hillary’s GENERAL ELECTION money. Obama is not going to do anything that does not benefit him, nor is Hillary. You people that are still in suspended disbelief that these are not political animals continue to amaze me. Personally I’m in suspended disbelief that there is such a thing as reality any more.

McCain seems to be a nice person yet the bashing of either party is unwarrented we must at this point look at the direction our country is going in
and we must also say it is mess but in all respects history repeats it’s self
Bush adminstration was a blunder and we
must look at our future I feel that in
all repects that McCain will follow bush
agenda as far as obama he looks at the
future he has young children and has
family values.it should not be about
the parties are but more about what the
people really need I oppose the war,gas
prices the rise in economic failure
we have choice and some places do not
they are under communistic rule it has
nothing to do with race or party we
must look at who can be best at being
able to not speak about our situation
but who is better to deal with it so
when you vote think about it I wish we all could pull together and make a difference OBAMA 2008

The only Legal and beneficial way Obama can pay Hillary’s debt is to attend fund raisers for her. He and the party knows this. For all of you that are quick to assume that he is using the Obama treasure chest to pay her debt should pay closer attention.

“chris mcmullen” If you were an informed voter you would know that obama could not pay of clinotn’s debts from his coffers, He must ask his big donors to donate to hillary for party unity. Nothing hypocritical about that.

Posted by: Lord of war | June 24, 2008, 12:55 am 12:55 am

Both CNN and MSNBC panelists (during the primary) stated that in previous elections, the nominee could (and did fairly often) help to retire the debts from their competitor(s). Around June 3 the debt was reported to be 20 million, and now it is 10. Working class individuals may not have as much money as those within an upper middle class ($75K as Obama mentioned in a debate- but for MIDDLE class?), but they are trying. If the media would permit a more encouraging message of, say, if there are former Hillary supporters who appreciated her campaign- just give only what you can afford (or purchase an item at the store; a portion would go to the campaign then), then that would be of greater benefit than the negative tone that has been constant during much of this campaign.
And though I don’t believe that Senator Obama was the best candidate, he will probably have a strong cabinet that will compliment him. He will still have my vote in November, but he’ll have my support and help with phones, etc. if he truly exhibits change:
Finding common ground with “one’s enemies”.
I do recall the Austin debate where each candidate more or less agreed that they would consider the other for a possible VP nod (Clinton was more favorable whereas Obama’s comment was “VP or a Cabinet seat” – sounds like “NO” to me, but we’ll see….).
Thank you for the opportunity to post!

Senator Hillary Clinton should charge the corrupt Senator Obama one million dollar an hour to campaign for him. He is not even a Democrat but a socialist. I will never vote for this very corrupt guy from Chicago.

Posted by: annoyingrabbit | June 24, 2008, 1:39 am 1:39 am

Interesting comment tww,
Just to note, Senator Clinton did ‘dig deep’ with a few million of her own. Though the papers touted their 109 Million made after Bill Clinton left the White House (~8 years), this is FAR less than most CEO’s, athletes, Health organizations, etc. make. I’m not saying that they are middle class- far from it, but considering all the work they’ve done for others despite the ____ they’ve received, they have done quite a bit with their lives. No, they didn’t pay 10K for day care or anything like that (a bit much for day care, hmm? One candidate’s wife lamented that they HAVE to pay this). Nevertheless, one point was glazed over regarding the all mighty dollar and tax returns. Each year the Clinton’s DID contribute to charity- just over 10% in fact. McCain’s weren’t mentioned, but the IL senator’s stats were a bit less- even when the dollars came in respectively for his two books, eliminating the debts of law school.
I know, the Clintons are far from sainthood ;)- but I believe they have done a bit of good for the benefit of those who might not have had the opportunity. They should not be condemned so harshly. I know putting a certain face on a magazine cover generates $$$ for the media (and another face causes folks to want to burn the item), but goodness- actions speak louder than words, and Senator Clinton and former President Bill contributed a bit to help others respectively. Let’s not lump them with the individuals currently running our country to the ground. Bush, Cheney, and Co. should incur America’s wrath (also another marketing point I didn’t agree with that a certain candidate used rather effectively).
Just in response tww; the comment was interesting….
Still voting Democratic!

It looks to me like you give money to him to defeat her in the primary. Then he gives your money to her to pay her debt so she can be his asst. thief in the White House. Let’s see. If it’s a democrat in the White House do we tax then spend or is it spend then tax? The two sets of liars all seem to blend after so many years of beating the middle class into submission. Just pay your taxes and shut up, America. They know what’s best for you. Yeah, right.

Posted by: Maxify55 | June 24, 2008, 6:34 am 6:34 am

Michael, Couldn’t agree with you more. No one forced Hillary to continue her campaign after she knew it was mathematically impossible for her to win, yet she continued to spend, spend, spend. And now she wants Barack and his supporters to pay off her debt! And who is going to pay off my debts??
She made her bed, let her sleep in it. I can not and will not donate to pay her bills, when she and Bill have millions sitting in the bank. Let her write it off as a ‘learning experience.’
Now we’ll have to watch as she stands beside Barack and puts on her fake smile and makes believe she supports him. If Barack offers her the VP position, I will not vote for Barack.
NO CLINTON ON THE OBAMA TICKET. HE DOES NOT OWE HER. SINCE WHEN DOES LOSING THE PRIMARY ENTITLE HER TO BE VP?

EEeeeeess, Obama = no resume, no accomplishments, no experience, no energy policy (beyond using his pal’s ethanol and raising food prices), no good ideas. Supports raising just about all taxes, higher gas prices and a medical plan the country cannot afford. Another Jimmy Carter disaster waiting to happen…and there are people who actually support him.

A BIT OF KNOWLEDGE . . . . .
If a candidate drops out of the primary race before it ends, that person can only raise funds until the primary is over.
But, if a candidate stays in till the end of the last primary, the can raise funds forever . . . . .
This was Hillary’s motive.
Paying off another candidate’s debt is nothing new to politics. I’m surprised so many never knew . . . . .

I like the prospects of what Hillary and barack are doing.
Months ago when I told my boss that if Hillary won I would vote republican, she said that if I am a democrat I need to back her if Obama lost because of the big picture. I listen and understood. Hillary didn’t win and my black female boss is saying she doesn’t know if she’ll vote republican or independant. She says she is sick of a woman always having to support some man!.This brings to my mind God’s original design of woman being created to be a man’s help meet.
I beleive without a shadow of a doubt if Hillary had won Barack would have backed her and encouraged his supporters to do so.
These threats by Hillary “supporters’ to back McCain are impulsive and need a shot of insight. Some are hopeless and no amount of talking will convince them otherwise. It will take an epiphany to change some minds. Until then or if they never do we will see in November.
Just be reminded and know that even this stimulus check and Bush tax cut is not going ease our money woes.
Prices are steady climbing.
All republicans are similar to each other more than less.
All democrats are similar to each other more than less.
We are currently under a republican administration.
Are you happy with this current administration?
If so John McCain will keep up many of Bush’s policies resulting in an America similar to the way we have it now.Bottom line.
If you are not happy with the current adminstration, well here’s Obama. He will bring change very similar to what Bill Cinton did regardless of what the republicans say and what they want you to fear.

She raised 23 million in general election funds which can be transfered to her senate campaign with the approval of those donors – so she is hardly broke.
She is an icon – idol – diva and those 18 million votes are nothing to sneeze at.
Obama (or Mccain) will never rise to the stature of Hillary.

Posted by: ch | June 24, 2008, 12:16 pm 12:16 pm

This is the least Obama can do if he expects Hillary to be on board with him. Her debt is about a commitment to ALL fifty states and territories that had voted in this primary. She would have been WINNING primaries even if she had dropped out of the race. How would that have looked for Obama? Kinda of like John Ashcroft’s senate race when he LOST to a dead guy. Plus, it would have sent the message to the voters in the final primary states “your vote doesn’t matter”. Hillary has done more to bring this country together than anyone else in recent times.

puma people,
just I understand your pain and bitterness… because i experienced same thing when Obama was in trouble and i thought he would not be a nominee. At that time i really hated Hillary and i vowed to myself that i never voted for her. But still I could not think of voting for Maccain either.
And after 2 days, even my feelings were not happy, I decided to vote for Hillary. So, i know the emotions are so strong, it’s easy to follow it but, ask your beloved Hillary, what is real help to her… that you hillary supporters go to maccain… that I’m sure she never will support. And if you really trust her intelligence and judgement, how can you reject most important message from her?
I don’t think she risks our country for her own partisanship.
