Obama, Elizabeth Edwards to Partner on Healthcare?

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: At the first event on his "Change That Works for You" tour, presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama was joined by John and Elizabeth Edwards, making known for the first time that he’ll enlist Elizabeth Edwards’ help in health care policy.

Thirty minutes into his speech, Obama interrupted his prepared remarks and pointed to the wife of his former Democratic rival to declare his intention of her role.

"I’m going to be partnering up with Elizabeth Edwards – we’re going to be figuring all this out," Obama said when addressing his proposed reform to the health care system.

Former Senator John Edwards endorsed Obama on May 14, but his wife is a different case: remaining neutral in the race since her husband dropped his own presidential bid.

Mrs. Edwards has stated in the past that she supported Senator Hillary Clinton’s health care plan because it mandated people to have health insurance – a requirement that Senator Obama’s plan does not include.

"I don’t think there’s two people in the country who have done more to elevate the debate about politics who have focused on critical issues like health care and who have made us all think about our obligations to create one America," Obama said of the couple, remarking that over the 16 month primary process he has gotten to know them well.

The Obama campaign says that formal talks are not yet in the works between the Illinois senator and Mrs. Edwards, but confirm that this is something they will do in the future.

"Her presence here speaks volumes," spokeswoman Jen Psaki says, "Senator Obama hopes she will play an active part in his efforts."

Elizabeth Edwards, fighting a very public battle with incurable cancer, has been a fierce advocate for improved health care for all Americans.

The Edwards’ sat in the front row for most of Obama’s speech – but ducked out early to make a flight to a previous engagement.

He endorsed Hussein a day after Hillary’s big win in WV.
Shame on you….you’re a loser……

I never understood John Edwards, if he stands for the poors, why he supports Obama?

Obama just gets the nomination and his boost is only 6 points? Given the war in Iraq and the state of the economy he should be double digits ahead of McCain
at this point- at least during this period where he is expected to get a boost and we should be seeing his numbers rise.

Poor…so your point is what? Edwards and Obama aren’t poor either, but both have worked with the underpriveleged and downtroden. They know what is like. Obama and his mom were on food stamps for a time. What is your point?

Posted by: grannie | June 9, 2008, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm

Because Obama will help the poor, DAH. mc-more-war wants to continue the tax breaks for the rich, the same tax breaks that he once said this country could not afford. Talk about pandering. mc-more-war voted with bush 95% of the time last year. This country needs REAL change not another bush term. Obama 2008 will be GREAT!!!

alpaig, I think a 6 point lead is ok at the moment. virtual dead heat to 6 point lead in a week when he has hardly campaigned at all and most of the media focus has been on Hillary is not a bad start at all. I think the only reason McCain has been in touching distance in the polls recently has been that Obama and Hillary have been in there own battle, while McCain has been able to attack Obama as much as he likes.
Obama is no Dukakis either, he will build a solid lead over the next few months and win by at least 8 points and 150 electoral college votes.

Somebody needs to help Obama with his healthcare plan because he doesn’t have one.

And elizabeth Edwards might be a very smart gateway to any women still upset over Hillary’s defeat, whilst enlisting another woman incredibly passionate about healthcare reform.
Who is McCain going to have help him on healthcare? Someone on the insurance companies side no doubt.

Obama wisely brings in experts.
When it came to the economy, he looked to the top economic advisers of the past 20 years.
Now, he’s looking to leaders in the health care.
Obama also brought in energy experts who have spent 8 years calling Bush policy a major mistake.
I always like it when someone admits they want the advice of people who are experts in their field.

He had the worst health-care plan of all the Dems, straight out of the insurance-lobbyist playbook. Obama tried to lure Hillary to take position, to get her away from VP; but why should she take a job with the responsibility to explain why the Obama universal health-care plan is not covering 15 million people?

Nothing Like stealing Hillarys plans and what she has been working hard on.
Of course Obama has a history of that.
Like the asbestos in Chicago, someone did all the work, and Obama claimed it as his.
So he went from Catch Phrases, slogans, speeches, now to stealing policies.

It’s going to get more interesting as Hillary supporters move to McCain in droves and the MSM refuse to acknowlege it.

Obama is only up by 6? To a republican with an unpopular president, an unpopular war a shaky economy? Also with 100% pro Obama coverage 24/7 and after just making history?
What’s wrong with this picture? Obama should be ahead by at least 20 points!
Not looking good for Obama. President McCain – get use to it!

Posted by: Jo | June 9, 2008, 4:53 pm 4:53 pm

I believe Obama has hit a glass ceiling he didn’t know was there!!!
He has his constituency…He has energized 50% of the Democrats….He has the Republican crossovers…..the people in his crowds have already voted for him in the primaries….He believes he has Hillary supporters on board.
Now let’s see McCains numbers start to go up.
The Obama campaign is going to get confused.
The truth is that they have created and marketed a product….they may be getting “buyers remorse” and there may be some people that won’t buy at all…
It’s going to be a bumpy ride…buckle up.

We’re going to be figuring this out? Is that really what Obama said?
How about “Well, since Hillary ALREADY has figured it out, she should be the nominee. Oh and because she won the popular vote, is way more experienced than I, not only has a plan for healthcare reform but also a plan for the economy, education, troop withdrawal from Iraq, a full knowledge of Iran, years of valuable experience with bipartisan legislative change and the list goes on”
Maybe that’s what he should say

Posted by: sue4hil | June 9, 2008, 6:20 pm 6:20 pm

We hear Obama’s statement for what it is: who needs you, Hillary, I’ll just get Elizabeth to do the only thing you might have been good for. The issue you’ve been working on your whole life, Hillary, introduced 3 days after Bill’s first inauguration in 1992, and have taken enormous flack for ever since. One of the many issues on which you’re more position is much more progressive than mine, despite my marketing image for the left. I’ll just bring in another woman to do it. And I won’t point out that Elizabeth criticized my plan since it was not UHC like Hillary’s. Or that I was so opposed to that plan I mailed out millions of the scurrilous Republican Harry & Louise flyers, a tactic so destructive of the democratic signature issue no real progressive would have stooped so low. And I won’t wait to make this announcement till I address some of Hillary’s supporters issues, appear with her in public to thank her, or even mention her in this context. And I’ll make the announcement now, so it looks as dismissive and arrogant as possible. In code, of course, as usual.
Keep it up. We’ll remember in November.

Posted by: j barron | June 9, 2008, 6:21 pm 6:21 pm

Would you like to really debate the issues? Then please, let’s.
We can discuss, and when I am wrong I’ll say so. I just expect the same courtesy.
If you want to insult, well I will go there if I have to as well.
Give me an issue…..

Despite all the arguing there are still human beings in this country that lack basic needs. The wealthy of this country should be proud to do what they can and help another American through taxes, but not in this greedy country…what happens is the wealthy manipulates government to abandon the poor human with basic needs, or arrest him…then this greed lusting, wealthy person manipulates the government more to make himself more wealthy and the rest, the defenseless, and poorest are put more and more in debt…in fact this is occurring so much in the USA to the point that the most wealthiest individuals (ie banks, oil companies :cause corps are people)
are going to single handedly, with the help of a congress/white house/supreme court/government (that they bought out)…they are going to destroy the middle class, sell our jobs to China, and bankrupt our declining monetary system.

Obama made “short-range” promises for the economy, i.e. 20 billion more stimulus checks, $4000 tuition credit for students if they volunteer, tax cuts for most middle income citizens, $10billion to help in foreclosures, etc, but he NEVER said where this money was going to come from or how these goals would be attained. Again, promises, promises with no credence to how these promises will come to past. As has always been said of Obama, he’s an “empty suit with no substance”.

Seriously,
I did do a lot of research and come to the conclusion that Obama is a fake. All his legislations in IL senate were handed to him by Emil Jones. He passed almost all of his legislature during his last year in the senate. In his US senate so far, he has passed ONE bill. Obama can not win with his resume, he knows that and you should know that too.
Obama won so far by his personal stories, and those storied were told by nobody but himself. I just don’t trust him. He may be a good person, but the one that can lead this country.
As to his Iraq record, all I was asking was, ignoring his 2002 speech and looking at his records, would you be able come to the conclusion that he had the conviction to bring troops home?

Many keep saying that Hillary supporters are “ditching” her. This is so far from the truth. What you don’t realize is that Hillary did not relinquish her delegates to obama, she suspended her campaign. She will keep her delegates going into the convention, and by doing so, she’s not completely 100% supporting Obama….I think Hillary has a hidden agenda. Many Clinton supporters, will write Hillary’s name in on the ballot or vote for McCain. I don’t see Obama winning in the GE….the hurt and the wound is too deep in the Democratic party.

Have you noticed that these antagonistic comments often are so blatantly wrong that you wonder how warped their mind is to come up with claims like that?
Some of these use such poor English and have so many misspelled words, simple words, that its doubtful that the author is even American. Most of us learn better grammar and spelling in grade school.
Repeated and multiple posts, only a minute or two apart suggest that many of these are people who create spam e-mail, and are posting here for money. It doesn’t take much imagination to suspect the source of their money.
Amazingly, the majority of these say something like “If not , I’m switching parties”. Ok fine. These people cannot vote anyway, so it don’t matter. Even if they can, their choice of candidate is in no way swayed by comments here – and to claim that “Because of you, I’m changing my vote to .” Same chant, second verse.

@ Rodney…my problem with Obama is that he is making all these short and long range plans, buts he’s not giving any stance on how he will achieve these goals. It’s easy to make promise after promise, but until you can back them up, they have now “substance”. This has been Obama’s chant since the beginning. Americans definitely want and NEED change, but it’s useless if the candidate advocating change can’t prove the steps in order to accomodate these changes. The writing is on the wall.

with mccain we know we will have more of the same–i dont feel we can survive another 4 years without change–and in some cases very drastic change–we are being destroyed financially from within by foreign interest.china is sucking the life out of us—iraq is doing the same.lawers have the healthcare cost out of sight—and it is all about money follow the trail.

What a slap in the face. E. Edwards was in favor of HRC’s plan — to have Obama now, all of a sudden (after promising that HRC’s advocacy of health care for everyone would be a strong commitment of his) work with Edwards on this is a number of things, including insulting and pandering. Boy, he really knows how to woo those Clinton supporters, doesn’t he. Great job, obama.
I forgot. You’re the Chosen One. You do no wrong.

I know our savior the messiah has come to free us all from the American life style and “change” our government by adding more government and more taxes, and more control. Isn’t his hallo just a bit heavy by now. Hasn’t anyone ever seen the movie “Elmer Gantry” where Burt Lancaster played the roll of the enthusiastic gospel minister on fire to convert people through “positive” thinking—he was a con artist! I give you Barack Obama!

Now, why would Elizabeth Edwards who did not endorse Obama’s health care plan but who did endorse Hillary’s take on his proposal to leave 15 million Americans out of the program? What happened to her strident objections to no mandates? Reckon good ole Johnny boy has been promised a cabinet position? HUD maybe? This is Clinton’s signature position, universal health care for every single American. And Elizabeth Edwards has no legislative experience whatsoever. So how do you think it will get passed? She knows as much about legislation as Caroline Kennedy knows about picking a Vice President. We are really off to a good start here folks? Shall we maybe appoint a 5th grader to be in charge of the Department of Education? They would have just as much experience as anyone else Obama seems to be fishing for.

Word on the street is that a Million Women March is being planned for Denver to protest the DNC and to show our support for Hillary

The foolish says to himself/herself..”The economy is bad..the war is bad for the country..gas prices are too high..there are too many jobs being lost..Unemployment is getting higher and so I would vote for McCain whose policies are similar to the Establishment who have us in this situation..dumb idiots! Anyway, why are we suprised when the polls suggested that a large proportion of Hillary’s supporters are unschooled and uneducated. Vote Dems 08!

Well put jdona. And I thought I was the only one wondering what expertise Caroline Kennedy has for helping to select a VP.

Hillarys’ first health care plan failed. Not because it there was anything wrong with it. Far from it. After all, Ted Kennedy did most of the work on it . Oh yes he did, check it out for yourself. Hillary was busy with closed meetings, generally making enemies over said plan. Kennedy was promised by Hillary, that they had Bills’ full support. Unlike Hillary, Kennedy didn’t care to take the glory, he simply wanted to see a health care plan implemented. When the time came, Bill went along with the factions that Hillary had aggravated, and said it was too expensive.
So now after all this time, I don’t see that Hillary is anymore of a team player that she was then. That’s why she can’t be included in any new health care plan. If anyone knows this, it is Ted Kennedy! After all he crafted the plan, and he was there to have the rug pulled out from under him!

I will vote for McCain.
Democrats for McCain.

Sorry Cindy,
The hotel and all other accommodations have been booked for many months.
You would need Obama to organize on your behalf, have you contacted him yet?

Deb10,
Frankly, it’s none of your business what Caroline Kennedy does or how she does it. Stay out of other people’s business.
She is certainly qualified to say “NO” to Hillary Clinton.

Hilary’s supporters are upset that Obama asked Elizabeth Edwards to help him in the area of healthcare. For the past 16 years, for all her talk, Hilary has not been able to do anything regarding healthcare. Obama knows we need to use some new strategy to get the healthcare we need.

I find it ridicules that after 8 years of this stuff, with the American Dream now being marketed by fear tactics on Fox no-News… Corporate welfare and starving babies… that there even is still a conversation about Republicans.
Do research people… dig deeper, take a look at the direction that the U.S., the world for that matter, could go in come November. Vote based on you heart AND your head… not to be a member in some elitist club (THE GOP) that only exists because you by into that lie that you too can be like them… you can’t and actually, you shouldn’t want to. Unless of course you are still thinking that Republicans mean something other than fear mongering, hate spreading, lie telling corporate vampires. If you like that in your world… go ahead and vote the (R) Use your heads and see the chance.
Be a part of the solution… not the problem.
“Be the change you wish to see in the world”
Oh… is that over $4 a gallon? Isn’t there supposed to be an oil guy in the white house… Hmmm. Wait! I get it! Yeah… More of this is Exactly what we need!

You don’t have to BE poor to CARE ABOUT the poor and HELP the poor!
I think Obama’s partnership with Mrs Edwards is a wonderful thing. She’s very bright and honest and extremely down-to-earth. She “gets it.”

Nothing against Elizabeth Edwards…but this seems to be a slap in the face to Hillary Clinton and her supporters. Yikes. Is he stupid or just plain arrogant. Stupid he is not, he is just absolutely arrogant.

I think it is a powerful statement by Obama to enlist the ideas/thoughts/help from Eiz Edwards on health care. HRC and Eliz Edwards working to join each of the Dem’s health care proposals using the best ideas to unify the project into a final solution.

“I never understood John Edwards, if he stands for the poors, why he supports Obama?”
You don’t understand why John Edwards supports Obama when he stands for the poor??? That only directs that you do your own reflection? Edwards supports Obama because Obama stands for the poor! How about you? Who do you stand for? Edwards look at things objectively whereas you are blinded by obssessive passion more likely.

THE HIPOCRITAL MRS. EDWARDS SAID SHE PREFERED HILLARY’S UNIVERSAL HEALTH Care, but for a political cabinet position, she is changing plans, that is call commitment. The simple health care to protect children and the adults by choice will leave the parents dead since they will not be able to buy the insurance, but their children will have a good foster home. OBAMA FLI-FLOP CHANGED FROM UNIVERSAL INSURANCE to health care because is more attractive to the upper and rich class where he belongs. Obama is Rhetoric, not substance.

I’ll believe this when I hear Edwards say it herself. Interestingly, she didn’t have even a second to confirm it. I think he just pulled it on her without her knowing it in advance. She was definitely for Clinton’s plan and I believe she would not work with Obama unless he promised to adopt Clinton’s plan.
I think Obama is a snake in the grass. But I’ll wait to hear what Edwards says about it.

And yes, it may be just a slap at Clinton, although it also put Elizabeth in the position of having to perhaps refuse to work with someone her husband has endorsed. Probably something she would not want to do but how to get out of it now that Obama’s sprung it on her in public…
I hope she is in a position to respond honestly to this. That she has not spoken about it tells me she is not likely to be in favor of it.

Posted by: sallywally | June 11, 2008, 12:27 am 12:27 am

If Obama wanted to alienate Clinton supporters, he couldn’t have gone about it more effectively than to choose another woman to work on healthcare with him–as if vaginas are interchangeable! Hillary was the original champion of healthcare and absolutely no one else has a better understanding of the problems therein. I respect Elizabeth Edwards but feel she is simply being used as a pawn in this case.

Posted by: JKR | June 11, 2008, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm

Could this be one of the ‘payment’ for Edward’s endorsement?

Posted by: vote4thebest | June 12, 2008, 3:39 pm 3:39 pm

The only kind of health care program that will work is a one-pay plan much like all government workers have; and it works!
