Obama Hates the Cheney Energy Task Force! (But Not the So-Called “Cheney Energy Bill”)

Last night in Detroit, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, assailed the process by which the 2005 Senate energy bill — helmed by Vice President Cheney — was created.

“When Bush assigned Cheney to create energy policy, he met with the environmental groups once, the renewable energy groups once, he met with the oil and gas companies 40 times," Obama said. "Washington has become so dominated by the powerful, by the well-connected, that the voices of the American people are no longer heard.”

What Obama failed to mention: he voted for the 2005 Senate energy bill. According to the liberal group Public Citizen, the Cheney Energy Task Force’s "report provided the foundation of the energy bill passed by Congress and signed by President Bush on August 8" 2005.

(Obama explained his vote at the time saying, "this bill, while far from a solution, is a first step toward decreasing America’s dependence on foreign oil." among other reasons, the bill required "that 7.5 billion gallons of ethanol be mixed with gasoline by 2012.")

UPDATE: Obama campaign communications director Robert Gibbs pushes back on the idea that the 2005 energy bill that overwhelmingly passed the US Senate bore much resemblance to Vice President Cheney’s 2001 Energy Task Force. He sends along this AP story from March saying that "It is a stretch to call it ‘Dick Cheney’s energy bill,’ a hot-button reference for many Democrats. Although the House bill was framed according to the vice president’s energy priorities, by the time it passed the Senate many of those measures, such as drilling in an Arctic wildlife refuge, had been stripped away.”

What exactly have environmental groups done besides say no to everything? What technologies have they brought to the table?

One of the reasons I voted for Clinton was because she was less energy industry friendly than Obama. That’s also the reason she had the Bobby Kennedy, jr, an ardent environmentalist, endorsement. Oh well, I guess I’m being redundant.

It is irrelivant what Obama says. Its only important in how the CORRUPT MEDIA HYPES AND SHAPES whatever he says.
You idiots are bound and determined to HYPE the guy into the white house.
Then the dems can forever say they were the first one to elect a minority president.

McCain voted against the Cheney Energy Bill and Obama voted for it. Seems like Obama demonstrates moderation and being able to work across the isle. Plus being from Illinois and a large corn/ethanol producer he had to support the legislation that would help his state. Duh.

It will be the 70′s only worse! I did not understand then as I was not old enough to drive but I remember my friends and I trying to gas up and go to the beach. WE have had our day at the beach!

Obama LIED to Iowa primary voters (and the rest of us) about nuclear energy, including his boast about “the only nuclear legislation that I’ve passed,” (the Nuclear Release Notice Act of 2006, which Obama rewrote to Exelon’s specifications, and which did NOT pass).
Excerpt: “Asked why Mr. Obama had cited it as an accomplishment while campaigning for president, the campaign … did not directly address the question of why Mr. Obama had told Iowa voters that the legislation had passed.
“the legislation has come in handy on the campaign trail. Last May, in response to questions about his ties to Exelon, Mr. Obama wrote a letter to a Nevada newspaper citing the bill as evidence that he stands up to powerful interests.”

Carolyn,
I read your post and the link,
i think it will slowly sink in to the people who are really concerned about the direction of this country, that we now have two very poor candidates running for president.
Everyday, i am reading more and more, and seeing in journalism and tv news, we have people such as keith olberman, and chris matthews, and hannity, the leaders of the political parties, weak mccain and weak obama,
where are the walter cronkites of journalism? and where are the great statesmen of our political system?
we are in a mess in this country.
and i guess it serves us right, because you should not have expected to be the “superpower” forever.
i just didn’t foresee us going down like this.

This is the worse possible things that we could do. This makes fuel compete with food and higher prices for both is the result.
Worse yet, this will strain the water supply.

Omentum: Please stop labeling McCain as another Bush. You know as well as everyone else, that alot of staunce Republicans don’t even favor McCain as their candidate choice.
I believe that if I can look at McCain as leaning more to the left than the right; as I have see Hillary as being more center (as a Regan Democrate); then I choose McCain as my choice.
Besides Omentum (thank God were having a civiliged conversation here without calling each other names, as some other bloggers do); I would reckon alot of other Hillary Supporters probably feel the same.
Obama, in my opinion, is too liberal for me. Hillary herself, voted for the BAIPA bill, Obama voted against it. His stance on abortion is too extreme for me.

Posted by: maggie | June 17, 2008, 1:59 pm 1:59 pm

my issue is with you saying “if he loses it will be because she did not campaign for him”
why do you put so much stock in hillary clinton being able to help obama win?
yes, she is the loser, all the more reason to keep her away.
he and his way won out over her.
with all of the people helping him, why would sen. clinton not campaigning for him-and his losing be her fault?
so if he loses with her-it will be her fault
and if he loses without her -it will be her fault.
obama claimed a new kind of politics
but he allowed his surrogates, and every
everyone else run her down.-that would be old school politics.
you cannot tell call someone all kinds of names, tell them to get lost, your way is not the way anymore, and you are not wanted, or needed, it is a new day.
(as the clinton’ were treated)
and then when they are off the scene-because you won-you turn around and tell them oh, by the way-comeback and help me or i’ll call you a sore loser.
how is that right mainegirl?
sen. clinton’ good works legacy is SET
and if she retired from public office today, and didn’t campaign for ANYONE, expecially obama, the GOOD she has done for this country has already been written in the history books.
and no one will write her good works legacy and put a footnote in there,oh, by the way she didn’t campaign for obama,so forget the good work.

“by the time it passed the Senate many of those measures, such as drilling in an Arctic wildlife refuge, had been stripped away.”
Jake, I would not disagree with argument that this is no longer Cheney’s bill. This bill had everything useful stripped from it, and left only those measures which would only cause higher energy prices.
That oil drilling would kill off ANWR is one of the biggest lies of all times. 2000 acres needed out of 20 million. And nothing lives there.
It’s so dishonest it boggles the mind.

Posted by: drjohn | June 17, 2008, 2:00 pm 2:00 pm

So if the bill was watered down then this rhetoric is notihng but bs.
“Washington has become so dominated by the powerful, by the well-connected, that the voices of the American people are no longer heard”
Obama’s excuse for voting for the bill is that the voices of the American people were heard. Which is it?

well friends,
I just heard on MSNBC,
obama did not know how to run for president. he was a detached leader,
and let others make the decisions, he didn’t get on campaign conf. calls until after he lost pa.
and get this they just admitted.
of course he does not have as much experience as sen. clinton.
the moderator said-well we saw sen. clinton start to run her campaign at the end-like a ceo, as she said this is sort of the way the presidency should be run right now. with the president having a lot of hands on.
the guy from the nyt’ said-no sen. obama is learning-but i don’t see him being much of the ceo type. he will rely on help and then make the decisions.
this was just on msnbc.
friends, does this sound kinda scary to you.
our current president was so inept he had to rely on “the knowledge and kindness of others” rather than rely on his own smarts.

Why do I need to defend McCain? I may or may not vote for him, although certainly will not vote for a phony.
At least McCain is a hero, compared to a phony being educated and holy washed for 20 years by a hatemonger who condemns America.
If we have to choose two idealess phonies, which actually is not true because there is only one phony and you know who that is, a hero is a better choice than a hypocrite who constantly makes “boneheaded” mistakes, who defended his Reverend’s “God-Damn-America” by blaming the history of the country, and only to over turn it by himself two weeks later, to completely dissociate his mentor for 20 years.

from what i am hearing and seeing the closer we get to nov. the more people and groups who are signing on NOT to vote for obama.
i don’t think in anytime in modern political history, has it been so difficult for the average voter to know where the candidates really stand on issues. they both flip-flop.

McCain should pick Governor Palin as VP and put her in charge of getting the oil out of Alaska.

President Obama
Practice saying it.
Get used to it.

Obama is a liar, incompetent, spineless, unqualified, and has obviously very poor judgment; he should go back to being a street organizer.

Let me tell you about McCain’s drilling strategy. We won’t fix anythign really, no real reform, we will however go and tap out our insurance policy to give a few yocals some money back on gas, as if that would actually happen, you know how we like oil companies to take up the profits instead of passing it on. So in reality, it makes no sense why anyone would vote for McCain

Posted by: Mack | June 17, 2008, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

McCain is about as smart as a pimple. Everyone knows he don’t know nothing. Bomb em, drill em (drill em good like that lobbysist lady), give $ to rich guys, that’ll solve everything

Book publishing is the tippy-top of the corporate pyramid — manufacturing “culture” AND making oodles of money doing it. Most of what we see and hear as “culture” (including politics) on teevee and radio is about books published by corporations, who similarly drive what’s taught in universities (and fleece every student therein, one reason “education” — the field in which Mr. Obama and Mr. Ayers spent so many lucrative years together) is prohibitively expensive for most).
Obama became rich by becoming an “author” owned by publishers.)
These guys are global, and don’t have any sentimental attachment to the “patriotism” of any mere nation-state.

Thanks for mentioning this.
Obama voted FOR the Bush/Cheney Energy Bill will both Senators Clinton and McCain voted against it.
What does that tell you?
Wake up, Super Delegates!!!
Are the powers that be ever going to call this man on anything???

omentum,
after the first 100 days of obama; presidency i would suggest you take your own advice to us.(besides i am not an obama hater-i just don’t think he will be able to handle the presidency)

How much money is mccain collecting in Social Security? Is his first wife still living, the one he cheated on and then went on to marry the millionaire? Why did he flip-flop on the tax breaks for the super rich? Why did he not denounce the hagee endorsement earlier? What was his role in the keating-5? Why didn’t he want any cameras around during the bush fund-raiser last week?? Really makes you say hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm doesn’t it??

Here, lemme guess: that the campaign for Obama is a Trojan horse filled with corporate uber-crats?
p.s. McCain won’t be the Republican nominee.

I think we should be drilling in the Arctic and offshore.

Mr. O’ is in the pocket of the energy industry via his handler Axelrove ( look up Exxelon). This is typical “I was for it before being against it”, Mr. O’ will tell you anything they think you want to hear, and his lemmings will will cheer no matter what, that’s some powerful kool-aid. The energy lobby will pocket the big bucks and we will be left with ‘Change’.
NObama.

CEO salaries from many of our large oil companies are in the multi-millions (billions)? of dollars? Yet their stock owners earn hardly anything, consumers are struggling.. and
NO ONE NEEDS to be paid that well for rendering services guaranteed to keep other workers from living a normal life!
Higher gas prices equate to higher shipping charges equate to higher food, heating and cooking charges, equate to less(or non-existent) bbankable dollars.
DOWN WITH GREED!
UP WITH MCCAIN’S PLAN TO OPEN UP OFF SHORE DRILLING!!! A plan which was suggested by the Clintons years ago.
This won’t affect today’s market…. but hopefully, our country will be able to benefit from this belated action less than ten years down the line…. and we’ve got to start somewhere!!

The funny thing about Social Security is that it was intended as a retirement system for POOR people. That was FDR’s intention.
At the time SS was being developed and implemented, it was expected — over-optimistically — that those who didn’t actually NEED Social Security wouldn’t DRAW it. The newspapers of the time, among other sources, are full of Letters to the Editor about this subject.
The conversion of Social Security into just another money-pot for the rich, and for middle-class corporate and government employees with other retirement income — while the poor who NEED it usually can’t get it — is the most egregious American example of pure greed run “legally” amok.

This isn’t so much about Hillary or McCain (who are both centrists) as it is about Obama. About his complete lack of experience (how is a street organizer qualification for the biggest job in the country?). About his State Senate experience – why won’t he release his records from those years, claiming they’re “lost”? About the fact that he only served 147 days in the U.S. Senate before deciding he was ready to be POTUS. About his talking out of both sides of his mouth to align himself with his audience. About his nefarious associates of the past 20 years. I would never vote for a person such as him for POTUS. I don’t care what he says his policies are – I don’t trust a word he says.

Have you ever SEEN how the streets in Chicago are organized?
At every light, there are five corners!
You can either go straight, take a soft right, a hard right, a soft left or a hard left!
After you puzzle that one out, you’re up to the next light.
Again, you can either go straight, take a soft right,a hard right, a soft left or a hard left.
Finally, you get two a two corner street light.
You can’t go ahead because there’s a block party or the lake…. and you can’t go right because it’s a one-way street…… even though you have to go the other way!
Please don’t send Obama back; Let him go to Kennedy land!
Mccain before obama

Probably to set the stage for a bunch of stories about how much BETTER the Obama campaign (supposedly) is doing, by having hijacked the DNC to Chicago.
