Obama Launches Anti-Smear Website

The campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois — still battling rumors about the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s religion, heritage, wife and even his citizenship — today launched a Snopes-like myth-busting website in an attempt to correct the record.

The first issue tacked on the website, FighttheSmears.com deals with the rumor that "Michelle Obama Says ‘Whitey’ On a Tape." The Obama campaign’s new website labels as lies: claims by conservative talk radio giant Rush Limbaugh that "a tape exists of Michelle Obama using the word ‘whitey’ from the pulpit of Trinity United"; blogger Larry Johnson’s similar claims; as well as "Proven GOP sleazemeister Roger Stone" saying "he has ‘credible that some indelible record exists’ of a tape of Michelle Obama using the term ‘whitey.’"

"TRUTH," declares the website. "No such tape exists."

Other sections deal with Obama being willing to say the pledge of allegiance, and his being a Christian, not a Muslim. A March poll from the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press indicated that one in ten Americans in general, 16% of conservative Republicans, 16% of white evangelical Protestants, 10% of Democrats, 8% of independents and 19% of rural Americans think Obama is Muslim.

Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor says the campaign "isn’t going to let dishonest smears spread across the internet unanswered.  Whenever challenged with these lies we will aggressively push back with the truth and help our supporters debunk the false rumors floating around the internet." He calls the website "an action center that allows supporters to upload their address books and send emails to all of their friends. It’s not enough to just know the truth, we have to be proactive and fight back."

Obama and his campaign haven’t been consistent as to how to deal with the rumors. In January 2007, after Fox News Channel passed on the false story reported that Obama had been educated in a Muslim madrassa in Indonesia, painting it as an extremist school where hatred of the U.S. was taught, prompting the senator to go on a campaign to correct the record. 

"It was an ordinary public school," he told ABC News at the time. "The kids ran around in short pants and learned math and science and participated in the Boy Scouts. It was comparable to any school here in the United States," he explained

Towards the end of 2007, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, was forced to fire Linda Olson, an Iowa County volunteer coordinator, and Judy Rose, Jones County coordinator for circulating emails claiming Obama is a Muslim. During that time, the Obama campaign attempted to correct the record by asking supporters and precinct captains to forward response emails of their own. "But that was nowhere near as centralized and coordinated" as the current plan, Vietor says.

Obama has tried humor. Speaking before the pro-Israel lobby the American Israel Public Affairs Committee the day after the primary season ended, Obama acknowledged to the largely Jewish audience, "I know some provocative e-mails have been circulating throughout Jewish communities across the country. A few of you may have gotten them. They’re filled with tall tales and dire warnings about a certain candidate for President. And all I want to say is, Let me know if you see this guy named Barack Obama, because he sounds pretty frightening."

But last week Obama expressed indignation after a reporter asked Obama about the apparently non-existence "Whitey" tape, saying there are "dirt and lies that are circulated in email and they pump them out long enough until finally you, a mainstream reporter, asks me about them. And then that gives legs to the story."

"If somebody has evidence that myself or Michelle or anybody has said something inappropriate, let them do it," Obama said. "This is the same kind of nonsense that we started with the madrassas…and frankly my hope is that people don’t play this game. It is a destructive aspect of our politics right now. And simply because something appears in an email that should lend it no more credence then if you heard it on the corner. And you know presumably the job of the press is to not go around and spread scurrilous rumors like this until there’s actually anything, one iota of substance or evidence that would substantiate it."

After that exchange, Obama spoke on a call with senior staffers and decided a more aggressive approach was necessary. He came up with the idea of the website.

He hasn’t always had the most help from his opponents in clearing up the rumors. Clinton told 60 Minutes in March that Obama wasn’t a Muslim "as far as I know." Last week Obama confronted Sen. Joe Lieberman, Ind-Conn, Add-on., a supporter of the presidential campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for not defending him sufficiently when Lieberman has been asked about the rumor. Lieberman had been asked about the story and later told the New York Observer his response was, "Obviously one’s religion is a matter of choice. Everything I knew said he was Christian."

What about the fact that he’s not releasing his birth certificate, or his parents’ marriage certificate (there is some doubt that Obama Sr. was divorced from his first wife when he married Obama’s mother — if he did)? According to US Law, a person who has a non-citizen parent must prove that the citizen parent was a resident of the USA for five years after the age of 16 in order to be considered a U.S. citizen. Obama’s mother was 18 when she gave birth to him, which puts the kibosh on that requirement. So will his website post the certified documents, or is this just a Liar Liar Pants On Fire type place where Obama will post assertions that we are all lying about him with no proof to back them up?
Is this anything like John Kerry’s military records, which I believe we are still waiting to see?

John McCain was born in Panama and is not a US Citizen. He cannot be sworn in. Watch out who he picks as his VP because that is who will be president due to John McCain being ineligble to be President because he was born in Panama.

I wonder if the good Senator Barack Obama feels the same righteous indignation about his OWN smear campaign against Hillary? In particular, the blatent fear-mongering propaganda campaign in leaflets, flyers, and emails attempting to discredit Hillary’s progressive healthcare proposal. He used nearly the exact same advertising campaign used against her by the Republicans in the early 1990s. When she confronted him about it, he refused to take responsibilty for the smear campaign and played dumb. Im so tired of this man’s utter hypocrisy and I plan to vote for McCain. At least with John, what you see is basically what you get.

Then came back a day or so later and said, yes he did hear rev wright say things like that. with no remorse and unapologetic.
What about all the lies he said about rezko. when first asked he did not know him well at all. he lied all along the way with this one.
What about Ayers, he lied on him also.
He lied on his family, will he post those facts?
Will he bring out his birth certificate
many have asked for that. Since he has used different names through his life.
His supporters will blindly believe his new site. But the rest of the world will not.

I’ve received several of the smear emails already..I’ve been looking them up on Snopes and then replying to EVERYONE on the list adding: FALSE!!!! before the title, and giving the link to the Snopes site showing it as a bald-faced lie. We need so much for this election to be about the issues. We have let the right wing nearly ruin this country, and the mess made in the last 8 years is going to take a more mature approach from the voters than to fall for this “swiftboating” of another candidate.
I think anyone who voted for Bush the second time should take a hard look at what news sources and critical thinking skills they use in the next election. The disaster he was was already apparent by the second election. And I hope we, as a people, won’t let this Karl Roveish kind of nonsense decide another election.

When the election is more towards personal preference and favor, the ones who beleive it will more believe and the ones who don’t believe will become more reluctant to believe…
The division will become deeper or deeper if people keep focusing race, religion, patriotism, etc…
Obama is a controversy… People who voted for him likely liked his personality and people who didn’t voted for him likely disliked his personality…. Too much personal feeling has been involved and it would be hard to convince each other…
The finale will be which side will become majority to decide the fate of Obama…

MayBee: Obama does have ties to Ayers, they both live in Hyde Park and Ayers donated to Obama’s campaign plus had dinner with him. The are close friends. Obama denies close ties to Ayres and Farrakhan but his lies are catching up with him. Rezko bought him his house and Obama apparently gave him a good kick now. I am definately voting for McCain to lessen the votes for Obama.

I want to applaud the people that are finding other useless, but creative reasons not to vote for Obama. Now it is all your opinion because how many people really know this man.You that are so critical of him must love George Bush. Or is it that you are jealous of Obama’s accomplishments? Either way I am sick of the hateful opinions of Obama. Are you as judgemental of yourself as you are of him? Also , do you think he would have received a HARVARD DEGREE if he was as useless as some of you portray him to be.I for one look forward to his presidency. I know he is flawed and may be connected to some questionable people, but what politician isn’t? I had no idea that there was such a strong movement by blacks to force the US to pay them for being the decendents of slaves. Rev. I am looking at an actual (original) birth certificate of another individual from Oahu, Hawaii and it has on it the date and signature of the local registrar (which the one online is missing?) No need to take off the signature of the registrar (if it was removed) because removal it makes the birth certificate invalid. So I have to ask, why would you want to show the world your actual birth certificate when it is invalid? If this is a “copy only” where is the State Seal or notarized seal…no copy of any birth certificate for passport or any other matter will be accepted without the state seal or notarized seal. Go look at your copy if you have one of your birth certificate or copy or try applying for a passport with a certified copy. This must be a some copy because in the bottom left hand corner it states OHSM 1.1 (Rev. 11/01) LASER. This seems to tell us that this copy that was made in 2001 by the Office of Health Status Monitoring, a unit of the Dept. of Health (DOH).
It seems that maybe the doctor’s name and date, and/or the local registrar date and signature must have been deleted but that can’t be because the only blackened part of this document is the certificate number in the upper right hand corner. By the way, it is hard to get a copy of a birth certificate because access to vital records is restricted by statute HRS 338-18 and only the individual or authorized individual can get a copy. So where did this copy come from? It seems that the Obama campaign wants to stamp out rumors and untruths but why then put this document online—it only asks more questions as it does not appear to be legal. Leaving the local registrar’s signature (which probably would not be legible anyway) would have at least made this document look authentic and valid.

When I first heard about Obama, many individuals were calling into a liberal talk show that I listen to and saying that the issue of slavery reparations is always coming up and that it would be raised again if Obama were President and that this time it might actually pass. It would be an interesting question for someone in the news media to ask Obama, but I doubt that will ever happen.

The Obama Camp’s “anti-smear” mechanism is nothing short of an authoritarian means of using informants and thugs to harass people exercising their freedom of speech. For months now, bloggers have been harassed and even personally threatened by Obama supporters for expressing any anti-Obama thoughts, including those based on undisputed facts or merely the expression of support for Senator Clinton.
But now, with this new effort, Obama has taken this harassment into the realm of fascist, communist, maoist and ba’athist strategies for quelling political dissent and free speech. What Obama has done is essentially to create a database for his supporters (informants) to submit information about bloggers exercising their constitutional rights. Obama, if elected as President, will come into office with his own private army of informers and his own private database of critics and “enemies.”
If he were President now, would this act be considered legal? No, it would clearly violate the Constitution. So, why doesn’t he demonstrate how “presidential” he really is by shutting it down immediately. Obama has shown his true colors — a liberal fascist. As someone else recently wrote, we are now witnessing liberal McCarthyism.
Americans should be outraged and the press should be ashamed for propping up this false idol.

Obama’s BC is available on some websites. It is a green Hawaiian certificate. He is listed as Obama II. An official copy so nobody can question it is going to be posted in .pdf on his website.
Are all of you claiming that children born overseas to diplomatic or military familites, and not always in a US military hospital, are not US citizens? Get over it by reading the Constitution, Articles and Bills – far more reiliable than any amateur posts. You do our overseas service people a great disservice by denationalizing their children!
Ayers was born in 1944 so is 17 years older than Obama who was just 8 years old when Ayers was involved with the Weatherman. It was Bill Clinton who pardoned one of that group and commuted the sentence of another. Hillary did seem to forget about that when she expressed concern about any potential links to Obama when Stephanopoulos raised the issue and raised the whole issue again of Bill Clinton’s pardons. The link between Obama and Ayers is minimal but a favorite of Fox News. Ayers contributed all of $200 in 2001 towards Obama’s State campaign.

It doesn’t matter what he does to quell rumors, they will still float around out there. He shouldn’t be too worried with older folks who never use the internet anyway (most of these people will be McCain supporters)…but would’t it be a bummer if the reason Michalle always looks so angry is that she knows there really IS the “whitey” tape out there. I can’t imagine any black that would sell a very damaging tape of Michelle that could kill Obama’s career. They would be branded for life even if they made millions from a Republican party insider. The truth is that if Obama had come in to this race squeaky clean, this would not even be a race. Pelosi and Reid now are the proud owners of the worst rated congress in US history. Worse then the rating of GW. And they backed the wrong horse for November.

A lot of things have happened in the primaries involving Obama that makes people want to ask a lot of questions about his so called squeaky clean life. I say if there is any doubt vote for the next person which is McCain. Why is Obama trying his best to shed the so called rumors. If something is not true you just shake it off and go on. Obama with his website it seems to me has something that he is desperate to hide.

Are any of you posters here over 10 years old? Why don’t you just admit you hate Obama because he is black and for no other reason, and leave it at that. Trying to come up with lies and smears about him and his wife and then criticizing him for trying to correct them makes no sense. You are all afraid of him and paranoid no doubt. You don’t want to get to know him, so don’t pretend if you “knew him better” you might vote for him. From someone who knew John McCain when:
As some of you might know, John McCain is a long-time acquaintance of mine that goes way back to our time together at the U.S. Naval Academy and as Prisoners of War in Vietnam. He is a man I respect and admire in some ways. But there are a number of reasons why I will not vote for him for President of the United States.
When I was a Plebe (4th classman, or freshman) at the Naval Academy in 1957-58, I was assigned to the 17th Company for my four years there. In those days we had about 3,600 midshipmen spread among 24 companies, thus about 150 midshipmen to a company. As fortune would have it, John, a First Classman (senior) and his room mate lived directly across the hall from me and my two room mates. Believe me when I say that back then I would never in a million or more years have dreamed that the crazy guy across the hall would someday be a Senator and candidate for President!
John was a wild man. He was funny, with a quick wit and he was intelligent. But he was intent on breaking every USNA regulation in our 4 inch thick USNA Regulations book. And I believe he must have come as close to his goal as any midshipman who ever attended the Academy. John had me “coming around” to his room frequently during my plebe year. And on one occasion he took me with him to escape “over the wall” in the dead of night. He had a taxi cab waiting for us that took us to a bar some 7 miles away. John had a few beers, but forbid me to drink (watching out for me I guess) and made me drink cokes. I could tell many other midshipman stories about John that year and he unbelievably managed to graduate though he spent the majority of his first class year on restriction for the stuff he did get caught doing. In fact he barely managed to graduate, standing 5th from the bottom of his 800 man graduating class. I and many others have speculated that the main reason he did graduate was because his father was an Admiral, and also his grandfather, both U.S. Naval Academy graduates.

Pure & Simple: Barack Obama does not have the experience or know how to protect this country from terrorism, to stay in Iraq til they can secure their own nation, or to to command our Armed Forces. That”s just for starters. Plus he emphatically states that he is going to raise taxes which would destroy our already fragile economy. From a white man”s point of view (that”s me) this has NOTHING to do with whether he”s black or not. I would have no problem voting for a black man. The blacks on the other hand, his color has EVERYTHING to do with it. They”re so hungry for a a chance to put a black man in the White House that they”re willing to sell out their soul and the soul of this nation just because he”s black. Quite honestly, I would have voted for Colin Powell in a heartbeat over John McCain but he”s not running. To me qualifications for the job has EVERYTHING to do with who I vote for, NOT their color and NOT their gender.
People had better wake up and realize that who best protects us against terrorism and who does not raise our taxes is the best candidate for this nation

The more I know about Obama the less I like him. Even though I’m not all that crazy about Leiberman, I didn’t like the way Obama took him by the arm and walked him over to the wall to chastise him. Now he has a separate website to debunk stories about him and yet he doesn’t want to vet his vetters. There is something going on here and it just doesn’t feel right.

BTW the video was not on that website, but he did not put his hand over his heart when the Star Spangled Banner was played, which happens to be our national anthem and it is required to put your hand over your heart. According to United States Code Title 36, Chapter 10
§171. Conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

Just how much Senate experience does Barack Obama have in terms of actual work days? Not much.
From the time Barack Obama was sworn in as a United State Senator, to the time he announced he was forming a Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days of experience in the Senate. That’s how many days the Senate was actually in session and working.
After 143 days of work experience, Obama believed he was ready to be Commander In Chief, Leader of the Free World, and fill the shoes of Abraham Lincoln, FDR, JFK and Ronald Reagan.
143 days — I keep leftovers in my refrigerator longer than that.
This isn’t taking into account the days he has missed.

Since you liked Butler’s first part, here’s more. Let’s see if you like the rest of the story.
John’s treatment as a POW:
1) Was he tortured for 5 years? No. He was subjected to torture and maltreatment during his first 2 years, from September of 1967 to September of 1969. After September of 1969 the Vietnamese stopped the torture and gave us increased food and rudimentary health care. Several hundred of us were captured much earlier. I got there April 20, 1965 so my bad treatment period lasted 4 1/2 years. President Minh died on September 9, 1969, and the new regime that replaced him and his policies was more pragmatic. They realized we were worth a lot as bargaining chips if we were alive. And they were right because eventually Americans gave up on the war and agreed to trade our POW’s for their country. A damn good trade in my opinion! But my point here is that John allows the media to make him out to be THE hero POW, which he knows is absolutely not true, to further his political goals.

John was awarded a Silver Star and Purple Heart for heroism and wounds in combat. This heroism has been played up in the press and in his various political campaigns. But it should be known that there were approximately 600 military POW’s in Vietnam. Among all of us, decorations awarded have recently been totaled to the following: Medals of Honor – 8, Service Crosses – 42, Silver Stars – 590, Bronze Stars – 958 and Purple Hearts – 1,249. John certainly performed courageously and well. But it must be remembered that he was one hero among many – not uniquely so as his campaigns would have people believe.
More that 600 of us were POWs. After our repatriation a census showed that 95% of us had been tortured at least once. There were many heroes in North Vietnam. I saw heroism every day there. And we motivated each other to endure and succeed far beyond what any of us thought we had in ourselves. Succeeding as a POW is a group sport, not an individual one. We all supported and encouraged each other to survive and succeed. John knows that. He was not an individual POW hero. He was a POW who surmounted the odds with the help of many comrades, as all of us did.
I furthermore believe that having been a POW is no special qualification for being President of the United States. The two jobs are not the same, and POW experience is not, in my opinion, something I would look for in a presidential candidate.

I’m going out on a limb and assume you meant MEDICAL records. If you were aware of what’s happening in your world, you would know that Obama released his medical records the same day McCain did. McCain’s medical records were 1186 pages. Reporters were allowed three hours to examine them, they were not allowed to make copies.

It’s obvious by the comments here, that many of you skipped your history lessons,or weren’t alive during the Vietnam war. I remeber watching the POW’S come home.Do some digging, watch a movie. Educate yourself. Whether you support McCain or not he undured something that most people cannot grasp. The 60′s and 70′s were trying times. And Vietnam was a different war than today. You question his survival. Maybe you should volunteer at a VA hospital. Talk to some vets. You’ll know the stories are true. If my arms were being ripped from my body I’d say or do anything too.

Smearing Obama is easy when it’s true. He will destroy NASA’s major upcoming projects in lieu of a socialized education reform. NASA gets less than 1% of the national budget but the welfare system gets 35% and he can’t find anything there to cut? NASA gives us tangible and intangible benefits whereas the welfare system gives us …..more welfare users.

Now as for the federal income tax, you are correct. Sen. Obama wants to raise the income tax on those who make $250,000 or more. BUT since most small business file at the individual rate, that means that most small businesses will see their taxes go up significantly. That will mean layoffs and higher unemployment.

zz, I am by no means an expert but based on what I have read in other sites and on the one you list I’m not sold that McCain doesn’t care about women, I’m not saying he doesn’t have work to do, he does, but I’m looking at it from outside the box, I think he is actually looking out for women business owners but the way he says it doesn’t come across that way. McCain’s plan adds $4.5 trillion in new debt.* Obama’s plan provides $1,042 in tax cuts for the middle 20% of Americans. McCain’s plan provides about $1,009 for the same class of Americans* The top 1 percent earning $603,402 annually would pay $115,974 more in taxes under the Obama plan. They would receive a $45,361 tax cut from McCain.
Summary: Low and middle income taxpayers would pay lower taxes under the Obama plan.
Let me also add, McCain and the Republicans have nothing to brag about with respect to spending. Under their watch, Americans are spending about $12 million a month in Iraq with no end in sight. Meanwhile, they gave us the “Bridge to Nowhere”, the Cowboy Museum and less money for health care, the nation’s infrastructure, energy, the economy or other domestic programs. But, they did give us no bid contracts, Haliburton, Blackwater, Enron and a host of special interest K Street lobbiest. You may not vote for Obama. I really don’t care. But, for the record, the Republicans have governed badly during these last 7 and a half years.

I was trying to find the article I was reading today about all the mistakes McCain has said in regards to Iraq and our troops. One of the biggest things that people do not seem to realize (according to the article) was that we are not fighting al Qaeda in Irag. it is a civil war that we are in the middel of. Al Qaeda is a very small miniscule piece. Bush people and McCain people keep saying al Qaeda because they need to justify why we are still there and to play the fear card.

Carolyn, actually there are many active members of the military, even some in Iraq, who are not citizens.
Now as for Tony’s comment, while Sen. McCain receives all the benefits of being a citizen of the United States, I guarantee that should he win the general election there will be lawsuits trying to have him declared as Constitutionally unqualified. There is a Constitutional question as to whether being born on a US territory, even when both parents are American citizens, qualifies as being a “natural born citizen.” While most Constitutional lawyers believe it does, it will require a ruling by the United States Supreme Court to once an for all answer the question.
Now then you may ask, why can’t the Supreme Court rule on that question right now? The problem is they can’t even hear a case until there is an actual situtation. And while there have been others nominated to be president who were born in US territories, none have gone on to actually win the election.

For all you people still talking about the gas tax. Please remember they are talking only about the federal tax not state and local. 18 cents a gallon is not going to buy much of anything. I have a 12 gallon tank. I will save $2.16 everytime I put 12 gallons in my car. I can use that to buy me 2 items of the McDonalds or Jack in the Boxes Dollar menu. I am not sure if the 16cents will cover the tax on my food

Iam4thisCountry, that means anyone working pays the payroll tax (Social Security & Medicare) until they reach the $102.000. The employee pays half and the employer pays half. So by raising the limit, not only does it increase the taxes paid by the employees, but also the employer — for every employee that makes over $102,000.
Just check Sen. Obama’s website, click onto “Issues” and then “Seniors and Social Security.” Then use you Find function and enter “$102,000.”

Why are we talking about his birth certificate. he was born. (unless he was hatched). I know that the parents and race are on the Birth Certificate, but not religion. And who cares. There was a big todo when Kennedy ran. After all, He was a “Catholic”. There had never been a “Catholic” in the White house. Also, all religions are not evil. Just certain fanatics. Look at the Crusades that “Catholics” waged. How many people did they kill in the name of Religion. By the way, A am a Catholic!!

Obama does not condon nasty Blogging. I am sure that most of the people that are on the blog just say things to get a reaction. Kind of “Stirring the Pot” to keep hard feeling going. I do not care who you vote for. Just vote on the issues. But that means listen to the issues, not just what other people say someone says. I have found that there are certain people that report that are not objective. You will all have to do the best you can. This new age of Technology has really created problems. i guess that is progress.

Iam4thisCountry, I believe Questioner is questioning whether Sen. Obama may have a similar situation as Sen. McCain. But as far as I know there has never been any question as to the fact that Sen. Obama was born in Hawaii — after it became a state.

I don’t know if McCain is Lying. Twisting the truth may be more like it. He is confused (nothing to do with age) on alot of things. But, I was going to watch McCains Speach yesterday. But the first thing he said was a slam against Obama for the “clinging to Religon” comment. (I understand what Obama ment and I don’t believe he ment it in a derogatory way) I turned McCain off. he turns me off, especially when he follows his slam with a stupid looking grin. Disgusting.

Why would McCain have an issue of whether he can be president. You have to be a “Natural Born Citizen”. If both of your parents are citizen’s and you are born in an other country; you are still a “Natural Born Citizen”. Wasn’t his Dad an Admiral? If you are in the Military service and your family is with you overseas. And you have a child while over seas with the military, your child is a citizen of the US.

Iam4thisCountry, I found Sen. Obama’s comment that some of us cling to religion and guns because we are bitter. We believe in God and the 2nd Amendment because they are part of our core beliefs. I am not bitter. Nor do I hate Sen. Obama. I just don’t support his ideology.
I will be supporting Sen. McCain because he best matches my ideology. But I am frustrated that we Republicans once again have a nominee who is not very articulate. It is difficult for me to watch him speak when he uses the telepromoter. He gets ahead of himself and frequently botches his words. And even tonight’s townhall meeting was ackward. I didn’t see the whole thing. But he had one extemely terrible moment towards the end when he couldn’t remember the question (regarding what characteristics he will be looking for in a Supreme Court nominee). So instead of admitting that he forgot the question, he asked the questioner to explain more about his (the questioner’s) background so that he (Sen. McCain) could better understand the question.
Now as to the question of Sen. McCain’s citizenship, the 14th Amendment, Sec. 1, states: “All persons born or naturalized IN the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” (Emphasis is mine.) There is no exception for parents being citizens and no exception for being born on US territories. While there is no question that Sen. McCain is a citizen, the question is does he qualify as a “natural born” citizen? As I said before, there will be lawsuits should he win the general election. But I really don’t see the U. S. Supreme Court ruling against Sen. McCain. As that would mean that every person in the military who has children born in foreign countries (regardless of whether they were born on a US base) would not be constitutionally qualifed to be president. And that would cause a huge uproar among the military ranks.

I take my guns and religion very seriously as well. And for all of those fear inspirers out there wanting us to vote for Obama so women can use abortion as birth control, better think about something else. There are challenges to gun laws everywhere and when they start hitting Obama’s liberal, Socialist stacked Supreme Court, we’ll be told to give up our guns while the criminals can illegally obtain theirs and invade our homes and rob and murder us. Every one better think long and hard if you own a gun. I’m 46 and don’t foresee a pregnancy in my future. I’m more concerned with being allowed to protect the children I have.

And, then, McCain didn’t know the difference between sunni and shia, that he didn’t know we were not back to pre-surge troop levels and, most importantly, that he doesn’t understand how it does indeed matter when the troops come home – not just for the obvious personal benefit of the servicemen but also in light of the fact that our military is overstretched and the Iraq boondoggle has distracted us from the real “war on terror.”
And McCain’s quotes regarding Iraq, he was wrong on all counts:

“We’re not going to have a bloodletting of trading American bodies for Iraqi bodies.” (9/29/02)

What makes Obama and his crew a great campaign is that when they’re attacked, rather than trying to pivot away to something they’d rather talk about, they grab the attack and swing it back at the opponent, hard.It’s SO nice to see our candidate’s team giving back better than they get… get hit with slime or stupidity, serve back a serious body-blow on issues. I can’t believe that someone implicated in a big ass scandal like the Keating Five would even broach the subject of the opposition’s integrity. McCain should fasten his seatbelt, cause he’s in for one helluva ride.

I have looked at snopes.com as well as all of the additional Obama-Defender sites.
Actually, it is kind of hard to imagine why Obama would need a website to fight the “smear” when he has the media in his back pocket anyway, and is somehow not subjected to the intense scrutiny and criticism other candidates both past and present have been.
It’s rather amusing that when most of the “whitey” stories were only circulating in the few and far between media outlets that had the audacity to tell it like it really is and post anything Anti-Obama, he didn’t feel the need to worry about it.
It was only when the story finally reached the major news networks, and when one enterprising member of the press entourage that follows him around actually had the nerve to bring the “rumor” to the forefront that he all of a sudden felt the need to launch his “smear” website.
I can only imagine that with such a completely unvetted candidate such as Obama is, that the smears aren’t going to be stopping any time soon.
His webmasters are going to be extremely busy between now and the end of August………….

I just took a look at the so-called birth certificate of Barack Obama and I bet my vote for McCain that this is a fake birth certificate created with the use if a computer. Reason, the document was not stamped as a legal document for the State of Hawaii and the number of the certificate was “blacked out”. I would say it is a fake. Also, the typing would not line up so exactly if the document was placed in a typewriter to be compeleted.

I see this election as whether the electorate wants to continue our history of capitalism and the free market or become socialistic; whether the electorate prefers the individual controlling his or her medical decisions with consultations from their own doctors or giving that full responsibility to the federal government; whether the electorate wishes to continue holding onto our unalienable Rights — Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness or shall we surrender our Rights to the federal government under the guise of preventative health care or in the false attempt to prevent global warming; and finally, whether the electorate will continue our history’s reputation as the defender of democracy or walk away and hand a military victory to al Qaeda in Iraq.

We may see the direction this country is going in from different perspectives, but I have been a supporter of Senator Obama’s since his 2004 convention speech, and at this point it time, I believe he is the only hope for this coiuntry. He may not be perfect, his plans may not be perfect, but he is a true visionary – vision in a leader has been a rarity in this country for several years. I do not believe McCain can pull anything off but will only be a puppet for the powers around him; it is truly scary that he would even THINK of having Cheney in his cabinet.

Can I point out 1 thing? (or maybe 2) This is a free country, we can all vote for who we think is best to run the country. That is a given!!! But, if McCain runs true to form (which is never a sure thing) And he nominates a Supreme Court Justice (which is for Life) then we can all watch as things that women have fought so hard go down the tubes. They will Repeal “Roe v. Wade”. I just can not see my Grandaughter growing up with the possiblity that if for some medical reason or due to agression against her that she would be refused an abortion. I believe that life is precious but sometimes things just cannot be. Abortion is not an easy thing to go thru so do not make it that most women would use it instead of prevention. There are alot of families out their that would love to adopt. I was adopted.

I think one of the 1st things President Obama has to do when he takes office is prevail on the DNC controlled congress to pass a strong anti-defamation law that will make it criminal (with stiff penalties) to makeup stories and defame others, and also to reign in the free-for-all atmosphere that prevails right now, where biased shock jocks, pundits, right wing media and every bigot of every size and significance can just rally around a lie and make it substance at the expense of the victim. As much as our freedom of speech should be upheld, we should also have freedom from defamation to balance that. Even banana republics have some level of moral sanity and political discourse that doesn’t include the below the belt “baby mama” dramas that our mainstream media feeds off on. Enough already!!!!

Mr. McCain is not so clean. Let’s see…dumped his first wife after she became disabled from an accident and while having an affair at the same time. Gets divorced one month, gets married again the next month. Or how about the “getting caught with the hand in the cookie jar” situation involving Keating and his savings and loan scandal. Or how how about downplaying and getting preferential treatment for his wife setting up a foundation so she can steal the drugs from it and use it herself. Yeah, me and you would go to jail, but not them, they are above the law. Yeah, a man who never had a real job, never paid for anything, never lost his job, and living off the fat of the land with the best money can buy. Yeah…he has a lot in common with the average person…that is, the average guy with a rich wife to take care of him too along with the taxpayers who also pay everything for him.

The coverage on this story was biased. Instead of saying that Obama claims these facts are false, they just say they are. I believe that his previous church had strange ties to islam. His former pastor is being guarded by the nation of islam. Why is that? The other facts should have been presented as Obama claims, not that they are false. I expected more from GMA.

Sandy, I actually see President Bush as a great visionary.
I thank God for President Bush’s long term vision for defeating the Islamic terrorists in their jihad against Western Civilization. The first step is for Iraq and Afghanistan to become thriving democracies, and role models for their neighbors. The second step is the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With both countries also being thriving democracies, and additional role models for their neighbors, then hopefully their neighbors will demand that their countries turn to democracy. The third step is for the Islamic world to end their hate-filled, anti-Western Civilization curricula throughout their education systems. This three-step process is the only way to defeat the terrorists. It will not be easy and will require great sacrifice and patience. It is going to take decades, or more precisely a couple of generations, for it to come to fruition, if ever.
The Democratic and Liberal answer is to “just bring our troops home,” and hand a military victory over to al Qaeda in Iraq regardless of the consequences. Sen. Obama has already said that once we leave, should al Qaeda form a base in Iraq that he would not hesitate to go back into Iraq. Yet, al Qaeda is already there and we have them on the run right now.
We still have troops in Europe and Japan after 63 years, we still have troops in South Korea after 55 years. Should Iraq want us to keep peacekeeping troops in Iraq, why shouldn’t we oblige them?
There are many who may deny it, but the truth is al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations are at war with Western Civilization. Their ultimate goal is to turn the entire world into their own Islamic caliphate. They are in this for the long haul. And we should be as well.

The more of these smear e-mails we forward to the site, the more liars will be exposed for all to see. By the way the Snopes.com site and FactCheck.org are both QUITE reputable and above board – they simply seek to provide TRUTH to the American public & let us make our choices. The more lies and myths they annihilate, the better – whether they be about Obama or McCain or any other topic or candidate.

Hmm, is this pre-censorship?
I am all for debunking myths, however, Obama’s campaign sure seemed to like the blogs to perpetuate the Clinton myths…
This could backfire… what will people decide about the rumors that are not on his site?
Obama is running for POTUS, it is right and responsibility to ask him questions. If people feel he is not being honest and straightforward, these questions will linger. His anti-smear page will not work if people don’t believe him.

Jake, the ONLY thing Mr. Barack Obama has to do is show the reverse side of his birth certificate and the mess of the “false” or “fake” photocopied birth certificate shown on his website will go away. Why in “God’s” name hasn’t he done this. Is is a simple thing to do to stop the talk.
Janice Okubo is the Dir. Of Communication of the State of Hawaii Dept of Health and she stated only days ago “at this time there are no circumstances in which the State of Hawaii Department of Health would issue a birth certification or certification of live birth only electronically.” And, she added, “In the State of Hawaii all certified copies of certificates of live birth have the embossed seal and registrar signature on the back of the document.” In addition all copies have a certification number so that the certificate can easily be located and there is NO REASON to have the certification number blacked out. What Mr. Barack Obama is showing the public is invalid, so how does he expect to clear up this issue? He doesn’t care to clear up the issue and the public officials have been bought in our country as they are not coming forward with any evidence to the contrary. So no one cares because no one is asking for the clarity.

I guess the movement against him is starting. I have a feeling that it will become very effective.
To the point that he will not win in NOV.
There is so much stuff out here that its hard to keep the facts from mixing with fiction. Which is pretty effective.
I like Obama and I will vote for him. But I think my cause to help get him elected will be lost in the mix mash of BS.
That’s sad but that’s politics I guess!
Reading through the thread it is clear that people are willing to accept any little bit of information that forwards their cause… even if it’s untrue.
Some how John McCain is not being held to the same standard.
I am so happy that Obama has not gone after McCain like McCain and his people have gone after him.
If he does not win… he can say he ran a very honorable campaign.
