Obama Pitches in for Illinois Flood Preparation

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama lent a helping hand in his home state by volunteering to fill sandbags in a community threatened by the massive Midwest floods.

The presidential candidate — no doubt looking for a very presidential photo-op — will visit a flood preparation zone in Quincy, Ill.  Quincy sits on the Mississippi River, and the governor has issued predisaster flood declarations for seven countries along the water for flooding that is anticipated to set in on Wednesday.

Obama, clad in jeans, gloves and boots, shoveled sand into bags with local volunteers, Mayor John Spring and State Senator John Sullivan.

"This is really making a difference and obviously nothing compares to what’s happening in Cedar Rapids right now. And our hearts go out to them," Obama said of the widespread flooding that has ravished Iowa.  "But you know in some ways the situation in Cedar Rapids now, we’re just gonna have to let Mother Nature run its course. Here we can still prevent some of the problems."

Obama called for increased volunteer efforts to help protect the counties along the Mississippi in the waning hours before the flooding starts, and he promised aid to the areas of the Midwest already affected.

"We’ve got to make sure that every bit of assistance that is available gets to them right way. And we can’t have a repeat of some of the problems we saw in New Orleans," Obama told reporters.

The Illinois Senator filled more than 15 sandbags — and seemed to enjoy a break from the podium and lights of the campaign trail.

"There’s something liberating about manual labor," he joked, "instead of talking all the time.”

On Wednesday, Obama’s campaign schedule was affected by the widespread flooding — leading him to relocate an event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Chicago — to not divert state resources going to flood relief.

Thats a way to go. Leading by example

His security will devert resources.
Stay out of the way. I am so tired of politicians playing politics.
All he is doing is showing up for a photo op.
Enough already.

Yeah, leading by example. Rezko, Wright, Father Pfleger. Yeah leading by example getting a sweetheart deal on his house from Rezko who at the time was under investigation. Yeah leading by example inviting an anti semite like Father Pfleger to campaign with him. I have never seen a great man like McCain smeared so much and a punk like Obama praised so much. The politics in this country are sick.

This is political pandering at its worst. It is a PR stunt.
I do feel for the people in the flood zone and the damage will run into millions. However, whether Obama is there or not will not make the river rise or fall more quickly. It is a stunt, folks.

Before criticizing, go fill some sandbags yourselves. There are some catastrophic floods going through the Midwest and these folks need help.

And who cares if it’s a stunt; if it brings much needed attention to the problem then it’s done the job. Better than a stupid ‘flyover’ by Bush.

Posted by: MIguy | June 14, 2008, 2:18 pm 2:18 pm

Maybe that is where Hillary has been hiding, filling sandbags.
Seriously, I think that Obama is one of the sincerest candidates I have ever seen. I have followed his actions closely over the past year, and this guy is the real deal. I really believe he will be one of our greastest presidents ever. I can’t imagine mc-more-war standing a chance in the fall. Obama 2008!!!

Hes leading by whatever the campaign advisors tell him to do.

Evil thinkers are evil doers. Obama is doing more than looking for a presidential photo-op. His volunteers are organizing to help flood victims in other parts of the country.
It is so easy for people to sit back and criticize. You guys are so used to settling for little or nothing that you are willing to lump everyone together. You can’t even allow yourself to see good when it is being offered.
This administration lied and many, many people sat back and accepted it, even as people are toiling today, some still accept it.
For some of you, it is better to cut your nose to spite your face than to admit that things are horribly wrong in this country.
What are you doing to help? Other than sit around and criticize.
No wonder why the country is in the shape it is.

This is one of those distractions Obama talks about. He will be nothing but a distraction to people who are trying to get something done. Pandering at its worst. He should just go bowling.

Ooops.
I forgot to mention that Obama has done nothing but criticize every single candidate as ‘old school’ and ‘corrupt washington’.
Obama doesnt have a record to run on, so he bashed others and promised ‘change’ .

I just donated to the red cross in honor of Obama for America. I have always been amazed at what americans will do when asked to lend a hand. I am sure there are others who have donated thanks to the Obama campaign making this issue number one on their website. He is also soliciting volunteers to help sand bag, he is doing so in areas that have requested help sand bagging and are not currently flooding. He is trying to help while being mindful of not diverting resources from the rescue and relief efforts. This is more than just a a stunt, don’t be so cynical. YES WE CAN!!!

Got to love Obama!!! He already sent out e-mails to millions of his donors asking to send money to the Red Cross and to go volunteer if you are able. Now he’s leading by example. Can’t say the same for McCain who didn’t mention a word until he realized Obama had a direct link on his homepage to the American Red Cross and detailed explanations on how to help.

All these people that are critical and find fault with everything and everybody do not have anything better to do with themselves, are probably couch potatoes. They get up to eat and play on the computer for a while and give their negative views. It would degrade them to give someone a boost of encouragement with kindness. Because they do not how.

At least he’s filling sandbags to help americans and not his pockets like corrupt business as usual republicans.

It also doesn’t help that McCain and the republicans want to keep our National Guard and billions in cash and resources in Iraq. We need them here in america to help after the devastation of these floods, hurricanes and tornados.

Posted by: Anna | June 14, 2008, 5:48 pm 5:48 pm

These natural disasters show how stupid it was for Bush use of National Guard to fight in Iraq when they should be here for situations like the floods in Iowa.

I’ll bet we won’t see Bush or Cheney filling sand bags anywhere or any time.

I agree the National Guard should have been immediately dispatched to these areas. Where are they? Can they all be in Iraq?

McCain would break his own spine just trying to fill a shovel. Dollars to donuts he’d only attempt it to show up Obama. “Help the flood victims” is the first thing you see on the main page of Obama’s site; McCain’s site barely even mentions it. I’m sure he hardly knows it’s even happening. Gosh, what a comfort he’d be in a time of national crisis! Give me a break.

mc-more-war is just as out of touch with reality as bush is. I remember a few months ago a reporter asked bush what he thought about the possibility that gas would go to $4 a gallon. bush said “I wasn’t aware of that. mc-more-war would give us more of the same spending $10,000,000,000 a month in iraq when those funds could be used for people in need in this country. Obama 2008 will be GREAT!!!

Posted by: Jkan | June 14, 2008, 8:18 pm 8:18 pm

It all comes down to whether or not you think we should continue the bush policies. If you think the war should continue indefinitely, while we spend $10,000,000,000 a month, and you think that bush has done well with the economy then mc-more-war is your man. If you think that it’s time we start to get out of iraq and do some positive things for the average American instead of just the top 5% then vote for Obama.

Obama was there for about twenty minutes mostly shaking hands and then actually filled a couple of bags before his scurity teams hustled him away. He was getting dirty and wet. Just a photo op and PR stunt. No real help.

When he could have done something for poor, uninsured Chicagoans being treated at his wife’s hospital being harassed by collection agencies, he did nothing.
How many sandbags? How much of a security detail? How many photographers and media crew?

Why not accept the fact that Barack Obama
really wants to help people. If you know anything at all about him, you know that he really cares about people. You don’t have to be poor to care. To whom much is given, much is expected. Senator Obama embraces the concept. He knows that he has benefited immensely and he knows that he has to give back. He will be the next president of the USA and we will all be better for it.

The point of this blog should be to bring attention and help to the folks who are seeing the worst flooding in ages. Did you hear how high the water is in some areas? Above the 500-year flood plain! If you own a home, you know what that means, no flood insurance. These aren’t people who built in harm’s way.
So, please, vote for whomever you wish but maybe have some compassion for your neighbors. Donate some blood, or money, or just a prayer if that’s all you can afford.

With how little of the budget after entitlement and debt can be affected I’ve yet to hear a solid plan for balancing the budget other than cutting the space program and raising taxes what’s the game plan? doubt there is and doubt whatever the plan is will work.

The point of Obama filling sandbags was to point out the need for volunteers to fill sandbags. I think he did that quite successfully. I notice lots of criticism in the comments but I didn’t see anything that sounded like the speakers had ever filled sandbags! It’s hard work in hot, humid weather and help is desperately needed to get it done. Come help us. We’re trying to save our homes and we need help.

Perhaps Obama should just raise his staff and divide the waters, so that the people may walk upon dry land and reach safety of higher ground. Then he should rebuke the clouds and storms so that they are calmed and subside.
And these things shall come to pass so that the DNC may be glorified and that all the world may know who He is.

Im very glad that the anti-Obama aka ‘low information voters’ are so annoyed that he had the temerity to actually go out there and lend his celebrity to what is happening in the Midwest.
When Americans start trivialising another Americans attempt to help highlight a dire, life-threatening situation even more Americans are faced with, we finally see who the real Americans are.
Ps: Its not the low-information voters commenting on this blog.
Its merely a sign of some low-information voters running very scared. As well they should be. Its going to be VERY hard for them to have a smart man as President. I mean… how else will they ‘identify’??? Hmm?
So spare a thought for the disaster heading towards stupid people in Nov 08 when Obama is elected. Going to be a LOT of stupid people out there in need of sandbags to help them survive 8 years of a historic Obama presidency.

You US-americans should be glad to be given a chance like Mr. Obama. You really should.
The last eight years of US-american have not only devastated the USAs image in the world as peace-bringing nation, as the torch-bearer of freedom and land of opportunity. The last eight years have also brought down the economy of your country to the knees. Never before has the USA been so vunerable.
With Barack Obama you have a candidate that went from nowhere (He was living of food stamps for a while, and has only been able to repay his student loan due to the success of his first book) to possible president. He is neither white nor black, he’s neither liar nor thief. He might be the president that brings the turning of the tide. He might bring back freedom and justice for all US-american citizens not only the rich and the wealthy.
Barack Obama has been working as a community worker and organizer for a long time. He’s running for the presidency, but he would have been standing there in the dirt anyway. But now he has the power to do more than just shovel sand. Now he has the power to shake the masses and organize help.
Those of you who accuse him of drawing a publicity stunt should really take a look at his history and what he has done so far. Take a look at the bills he helped draft and sponsor. Read his books.
You really found gold here. And though I’m not sure if you actually deserve it, I hope that you don’t let that opportunity slip away.
I sincerely do.

i just want to say that i am from Quincy and i was there filling sandbags when obama arrived and it was such a planned deal. there were about 200 or more people there just to see him and they didnt even lift a hand to help! obama talked about this is america coming togather. well not really b.c. if you dont do anything and you stand there just to see him then how is that america coming togather? and from what i have heard from people standing around him as he filled sandbags, is that he filled maybe 10 at the most! so that was a photo op all the way! and there were so many secret service and security people around you couldnt even move with out someone yellin at you! it was a polictical stunt and it was rediculous! the city of quincy and its volenteers couldnt move sandbags out of the OLC for bout 1 1/2- 2hrs! which slowed the process on the levees down when they actually needed sandbags! so he didnt help at all and he was only a problem by being there. but thanks for all the volenteers for helping. and thanks for everyone who is praying for this area and donating. we all really appricate it. oh and another thing, the media says quincy is going to flood but it really cant. QUINCY SITS ON A BLUFF! lol just to get that straight. but we do have area taht is by the river front but our main town is ON A BLUFF. thanks.

Oh, you Damned NeoKon/DLC apologists can’t STAND it when somebody makes your boys and girls look like the petty losers they are, can you?
Whatever Obama’s reasons, he actually DID something rather than stand safely away and pose like he’s John F@*kin’ Wayne – and all you can do is desperately spin, spin, spin to try (and fail!) to denigrate that Magnificent, Iconic image of the Democratic Presidential Candidate rolling up his sleeves…and pitching in….

Iowa is flood RAVAGED (ravage: to work havoc; do ruinous damage), and not flood RAVISHED (ravish: to rape; violate; to overwhelm with emotion). It’s bad enough to see our elected officials mangle the English language. To see the press commit such an error surprising and disturbing.
