Obama Up In Swing States; Clinton Would Be a Drag with Indies

Though it’s only June, some big news from Quinnipiac:

Obama leads McCain among likely voters in key swing states Florida (47-43), Ohio (48-42) and Pennsylvania (52-40).

"In the three states, Obama leads McCain 10 to 23 percentage points among women, while men are too close to call. The Democrat trails among white voters in Florida and Ohio, but gets more than 90 percent of black voters in each state. He also has double-digit leads among young voters in each state."

Says Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute: "Sen. Obama is certainly not out of the woods, but these results are a good indication that he enters the summer slightly ahead in the race to be the next president."

And what of Clinton on the ticket?

Bad call, says Brown. "The people who really matter come November – independent voters – turn thumbs down on the idea. And, many say they are less likely to vote for him if he puts her on the ticket."

Florida Democrats want Clinton on the ticket 57 – 33 percent …and Florida independents oppose the idea 46 – 37 percent;

Ohio Democrats want Clinton on the ticket 58 – 31 percent…and Ohio independents say "No way, Jose," 47 – 31 percent;

Pennsylvania Democrats want Clinton on the ticket 60 – 31 percent…and Pennsylvania independents don’t, 49 – 36 percent.

Not surprising numbers, I’d say.

Well as a Clinton supporter I guess it doesn’t matter if I vote for Obama, so I will just vote for John McCain. I am one of 18 million that will not matter.

Well I don’t really believe in polls especially this early, but I hope these are correct. We can’t afford another republican in the white house.

John McCain Is Against Women
If you vote for McCain, you are no Clinton supporter. DO NOT FORGET Lilly Ledbetter. She was paid half what her equally qualified male coworkers were paid. She proved that she was discriminated against on the basis of her sex, which was and is still illegal.
When the Republican Supreme Court that she should have filed within 180 days of having been hired — which was impossible for her to do since she didn’t know her coworkers salaries –the Democrats in Congress tried to return the law to the court’s interpretation for the last 20 years, where you had to file within 180 days of the last discriminatory paycheck.
The Republicans held a FILIBUSTER to prevent the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act from coming to a VOTE. And John McCain says they did the right thing.
McCain wants to makes sure that Lilly and any other woman being paid half that of their male coworkers — which is still illegal — will never have justice!

Not surprising – voters realize that they don’t have much of a choice – even when the less awful candidate has insulted them and continues to insult them. The story pushed for the Pennsylvania primary was that people who voted for Clinton were racists. From the poll numbers, it seems that they may have thought that Clinton was the better candidate to represent them on the issues they thought were important.
I think Obama needs to start showing respect to Clinton voters – he doesn’t have to take Clinton as the VP but hiring Patti Solis Doyle (before even naming the nominee) was a huge step backwards – an unbelievable insult to her voters.

thanks for throwing your vote away and voting against everything the democrats, hillary, and supposedly you believed in…
give one good reason to vote for mccain
and ps not all 18 million people that voted for clinton are being childish 2 year olds who want to jeapordize so very much because they are angry and want to get revenge…
the vast majority of those voters will indeed vote for obama.

These polls will be irrelevant in Nov. I am a 49 year old woman who will be voting McCain and nothing any poster can put up trying to scare alot of us HILLALRY NOW McCAIN supporters will change our minds. Funny when you think about all the time we waste blogging that, 99% of us have made up our minds, we are not undecided and no posting or poll will sway us. I just want Rev. Wright to come out again and explain what he meant when he threatened he’d come after Obama if he got to the WH.
McCain ’08!

Kind of odd, isn’t it, that the pundits are so sure that Hillary supporters will fall in line for Obama, but independents will….do what? Stay home? Vote McCain?….if Clinton is the VP? Traitorous for us to do it, they say, but okay for independents to do the same?

These polls are so far off the others b/c these are the first pollings since Clinton left the race.
Her backers are backing Obama and slowly but surely are grasping the fact Clinton won’t be the 44th president.
It’s either Obama (similar policies to Clinton) or McCain (same policies as Bush)
Obama is winning the battle.

Posted by: Vanessa | June 18, 2008, 2:18 pm 2:18 pm

If she had just run a campaign on being an alternative to the last eight years, she would have won. Instead she allowed or encouraged surrogates to race bait and allowed Bill to embarras himself and herself and diminish his stature by viciously attacking anyone who didn’t fall in line behind Hilliary. (God forbid anyone who DARES to think for themselves and question the wisdom of the clan of Billiary Inc.) Indys don’t want Bill back in office period. Even in an advisory role. The campaign has showed just how unreliable and unstable he truly is. And if Hilliary can’t or is unwilling to control him, God help us if she gets anywhere near the oval office. Let alone her veiled threat against him during the campaign. Hilliary needs to go away. It’s Obama’s time to take the party in a NEW direction. The people don’t want the old politics anymore. Obama simply is playing the same role that Bill played against Bush the elder in ’92. In attacking Obama Bill and Hilliary are attacking the same kind of campaign that put them in the White House in ’92. Needless to say their attacks ring hollow. It’s time to focus on defeating McCain. It’s time for the Clintons to leave the stage.

Debra tell me one reason why you are voting for mccain?

Posted by: bhrandon | June 18, 2008, 2:22 pm 2:22 pm

LOVE OF COUNTRY OVER PARTY.
McCain is PRESIDENTIAL…we don’t have any questionable controversy…and eveyone needs to see his bio that aired months ago on MSNBC. Hillary and Bill are probably going to vote McCain…I heard Ferraro say she didn’t think she could vote Obama, just as Michelle had answered she didn’t know if she would vote Hillary if she had been the nom.
Alot of Dems it seems, are going to question being loyal to their party. I am a Republican who voted for and contributed to Hillary…..easy for me to work for McCain in the fall.

Posted by: Debra | June 18, 2008, 2:22 pm 2:22 pm

It’s way too early for smugness. We’ll see how the empty-suit fairs over the coming months, once things start to get nasty. Hillary was barely able to scratch the surface. He’ll be smoking 2 packs a day by November, if he makes it that far.

It’s not that your vote doesn’t matter but most Hillary voters care about issues and the American people first. The dems will win because the dems are right…on almost every issue.
There is no way of twisting that McCain is running on the same ideas and policies that got us so deep in …over the past 8 years.
McCain’s policies not only continue Bush’s ideology but makes it double what it was.
If one thing Bush did for us is prove a lot of ideas that Republicans say are so American and good for the economy…are actually bunk.
the same ideas McCain wants to drive the country into the ground with.

Is he above the people, because he sure looks down his nose all the time….my husband hates that and brings it up often. He has no confidence with debates, since Hillary whipped him there….and will continue to run from McCain. How frustrating…but he won’t be able to keep it from the American people for long.

Everyone knows Hillary is a better pol and campaigner than Mccain.
McCain doesn’t have a chance with months to go. You see shallow campaigning on fear can be debunked.
He has put his whole presidency ahead of things his father and grandfather fought for. The things that make America the country that people look up to…or use to look up to.
and will again.

also, mccain is presidential when he flip flops back and forth on EVERY issue, on EVERY policy…
you guys crucified Kerry for being a FLIP FLOPPER
and now.. mccain is 18 million times as worse.
His economic plan is, give my rich oil buddies their oil money, keep the war going, fight more wars, give contracts to halliburton so D Cheney is happy, keep saudis happy by buying more oil, explain i want a better environment and then propose off shore drilling so our coastlines can be destroyed!!!! weeeeee
lets see

1. To ensure economic and physical security.
2. To defeat a movement dedicated to the redistribution of wealth and power based on racial heritage.
3. To bring stability to the processes in Washington that went too far right.

Obama should take a step back and learn from someone that has actually worked across the aisle. McCain walks the walk, Obama talks the talk.

Posted by: Mack | June 18, 2008, 2:31 pm 2:31 pm

Interesting polls that are very interesting for both sides I think. Very good early news for Obama, but I commented yesterday that its not a forgone conclusion yet. I think given what I think the nature of the campaign will be though McCain faces an uphill task. He is going to have to out speak Obama at the Conventions(Unlikely) and hope for an Obama mistake at a debate somewhere (more likely, but not a given) and that Obama doesn’t come off as as capable as McCain in the debates. All of this is quite tough for McCain, and while he can claim a level of momentum by keeping it close for now, the McCain campaign still has the most work to do it seems to me.

Posted by: Jackie | June 18, 2008, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

Debra you said you were a republican, so… dont worry the dem money will stay with the dems, and your REPUBLICAN money will go to the repubs
and his resume isnt simply… OH MY HE JUST SHOWED UP AND HE HAS NO EXPERIENCE…. he actually has more experience then a lot of other people who BECAME PRESIDENT
Ronald Reagan, who served as the President of the United States from 1981-1989, had only eight years of government experience – three fewer than Obama – on his “resume.”
Similarly, 20th century Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson won the presidency despite having thinner resumes than Obama (Wilson, for example, served a single two-year term as the Governor of New Jersey prior to becoming President).
This is a common myth perpetuated by the right and reinforced by Senator Clinton who had less elected and legislative experience than Obama. Additionally, both Bush and Bill Clinton had less foreign policy experience than Senator Obama.
And of course, as well as Senator Obama’s 8 years in the State Senate of Illinois and 3 years in Congress, a total of 11 years in elected office, he has something that is probably more important and more relevant to becoming President than any one of the candidates who vied for the Presidency this year, and that is his years spent teaching constitutional law.
Since George Bush has repeatedly wiped his boots on the constitution, I can’t think of a better qualification than Senator Obama’s experience as a constitutional Law Professor for the University of Chicago and his his civil rights experience as a lawyer.
Our constitution is in dire need of someone as President who respects it, and understands it from a legal standpoint.

Since Obama and McCain are splitting the independent voters overall, the poll show Obama losing an estimate 6% average among independents with Clinton.
However, the polls also show that Obama is losing to McCain from 19% to 25% of Clinton supporters in primaries of states she won, FL, OH, PA
Excerpts from Quinnipiac polls (FL, OH, PA):
Florida: ..”And 19 percent of those who backed Clinton in the primaries now support McCain.”
Ohio:..”while 25 percent of those who backed Clinton in the primaries now support McCain”.
Pennsylvania:..”while 24 percent of the voters who supported Clinton in the primaries now back McCain.”
Adding or subtracting with Hillary Clinton?

Posted by: Angel | June 18, 2008, 2:43 pm 2:43 pm

be. I will votedl, let me just be clear on my position, which I have no problems backing up. When I decided to support Hillary Clinton, it was based on thorough research of her position, voting record and entire career. In the beginning I thought that Obama and Hillary were not that far apart on the issues, however as I delved into the policies and the positions and watched the debates and the interviews I realized a few things. Half of the ideas that Obama had came from Clinton, half of the people that were supporting Obama had absolutely no idea what his policies and record was, and when asked to dig deep and give clear concise answers on how you would accomplish and pay for your proposed initiatives there has been no answer only deflections and now he is doing the same thing with McCain. As the primary season wrapped up. I went back to Obama’s site and pulled down and printed out his proposals and policies and I pulled down John McCain’s and I don’t buy for one minute that McCain would continue the Bush Policies, McCain has a proven record of working across the aisles, he has a proven record of going against the republicans if he was not in agreement and he is a man of honor and we know 150% that he loves this country, therefore. I am more apt to vote for McCain because I know that he is experienced, and there is no lingering doubt in my mind about his motives for wanting to be president, or his background, it is wide open for the world to see. The whole 3rd Bush term is an Obama talking point and those who follow him will believe it, but those who really care about this election will research both candidate and their voting records and their background and come to a valid conclusion of their own will. Obama has proven to be a slippery politician and it saddens me because as an African American Woman with a Boy Child. I want my son to see that he can be anything that he wants to be and Obama should be a great example of that, but to me he is not the right example to many unanswered questions. My vote For Hillary was not transferable, it was specific. I have been a registered Democrat for 22 years and this is the first time that I will not be voting for a straight Democratic Ticket, until they become a party of the people like they use to independent.

Hey B:
Y’all just asked for good reasons to vote for McCain. I gave you five. I haven’t made up my mind who I’m voting for. Being an independent, I get to watch the show until the final curtain and vote.
I like McCain’s initiative to enable drilling off the coasts. It seems a shame that Obama wants that to be a privilege reserved to the Chinese. On the other hand as he has so often in this campaign, I expect Obama to flop in the other direction soon. He’s the spinnaker of Democratic politics. As soon as there is a downwind reach, he unfurls.

Posted by: len | June 18, 2008, 2:44 pm 2:44 pm

I guess if you want to go there, I remember Obama saying something about invading Pakistan. A very unstable Pakistan that actually has nuclear weapons. Not very good policy, but then again since he has zero foreign policy experience what would you expect.

Posted by: Mack | June 18, 2008, 2:44 pm 2:44 pm

I don’t see McCain’s anger, wish I could see a little more passion really….Obama looks more angry and his wife Michelle owns the word.
Please quit with the McCain temper crap. Quit with he is Bush…quit with he’ll take choice away and we’ll go back to l974 – not gonna happen – would have happened under Bush. We live in a sexualized culture much more than in ’74, so lay off the Roe v. Wade.
I don’t want to hear the rumor of the “c” word McCain used either. Geeze. I want to know more about these candidates families…I love McCain’s 96 year old mother and would like to see more about Obama’s Kenyan family.
How a person is raised is very important and there are alot of holes in Obama’s bio. McCAIN IS ALL AMERICAN AND THAT’S IT FOR ME. I DON’T DOUBT OR QUESTION HIS LOVE FOR THIS COUNTRY OR IT’S PEOPLE.

You have to love this post from Len
in response to the question
give one good reason to vote for mccain this is what len has to say lol
1. To ensure economic and physical security. (you obviously have not looked at the economic policies and not seen the news about afghanistan and pakistan in the past few weeks…you know where al quaeda…the guys who blew up the towers and attacked us…live… that we are so up to our eyeballs in Iraq…that they go get stronger and are actually using Bush/McCain’s foreign policy effectively to exponentially recruit more terrorists)
2. To defeat a movement dedicated to the redistribution of wealth and power based on racial heritage. (well if you mean the racial heritage of white, black, asian, american indian, indian, latino, and the rest getting some of the burden from 5 % of the country getting more reward from this country and not paying equitably for that reward…you know while single mothers and people on minimum wage try to raise their kids without healthcare and feed them and keep a roof over their heads…
and that 9 times out of 10 multi millionaire daddy bought my education corporate ceo-cfo-cio-cco can’t buy another vacation home…then yeah…I would agree with that movement. This country can’t afford and our infrastructure and future can’t afford the wealthy tax cuts and loopholes)
3. To bring stability to the processes in Washington that went too far right.(it is hard to see how voting for a man that has now promised that far right he will do what they want for him to be able to get their vote for President)
4. To defeat a candidate that is too far left. (How is he too far left…their is no difference in his policies than almost any dem that ran…and please don’t quote the national journal…they used stupid fake math)
5. To p*** you off.(I think you voting for McCain won’t p*** us off…just your kids when they learn you voted that way… and to be honest …it’ll be nothing compared to the idea of Len hammerin and hollerin around the day of the election because with all his bologne…no one listened…lol)

B, how much spillage occurred in the oil rigs when they were hit by Katrina? I do not know… but how many oil spills have ruined miles and miles of coastland, and destroyed fragile sea life? Do you think opening up all of our coast for drilling will result in zero spills?
do you think opening up the drilling will reduce our gas prices AT ALL? And by how much 20 cents? 10 cents?
How much starvation will the use of ethanol create in the third world?
there are many other forms of alternative energy as opposed to your weak argument here
How many miles can a semi loaded with lettuce drive on an empty tank? well this is obviously zero miles… no matter what source of energy we are using…
that was fun i got one for you…
whats heavier a ton of sand or a ton of feathers?
Will a tanker loaded with oil from the Chinese rigs pumped off the American shores unload in San Francisco or Hong Kong? I do not know? If we refuse to use oil does it matter?
How much heat can we keep from contributing to global warming by turning off the Google server farms? A lot less then by killing all the cows in the world
How many roads must a chicken walk down before he knows he’s a chicken?
i dont know… which came first you are me?

And Kerry was up everywhere too. I wouldn’t call Pastor Wright to invite him to the inauguration just yet.

C’mon dl, my friend, you can do better than that. Show some wit! Or at least some smarts.
1. The 9/11 terrorists were majority Saudis as is Bin Laden. The training bases in Afghanistan were destroyed. The insurgents there are Taliban. They live there. We allowed ourselves to become the Russians by failing to stay focused on the war. We allowed the Taliban because we didn’t build schools when the Russians fled.
2. You seriously believe a candidate financed by the hedge fund investors and Pelosi’s Magic Money Machine are going to redistribute the wealth of the Famous 5%? Buy the bridge in Brooklyn. The only wealth he can redistribute is from the middle class. Same as Bush except more pork for Chicago.
3. It’s hard to see how Obama’s plans for the DNC do anything but push it further left just as the Reagan Democrats are abandoning the party.
4. The rest of the Dems aren’t mentored by the hard left anti-American radicals. They are left of center. Obama is left of the turning lane on a two lane road.
5. My kid voted for Hillary Clinton. So did I. Now I’ll vote for whoever makes me the best deal.
And so will you.

You’d be surprised at what a few well timed ads can do to a person’s poll numbers. He’s no longer in the comfortable vacuum of the Democratic party. It’s time to sink or swim, and with pastor wright and the rest of his baggage on his back, I hope that he doesn’t have to swim too far.

Posted by: Mack | June 18, 2008, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm

Well its obviuos that this wright thing hasn’t hurt him in the polls so why don’t you just keep calling him a muslim that might work.

Well as a Clinton supporter I guess it doesn’t matter if I vote for Obama, so I will just vote for John McCain. I am one of 18 million that will not matter.
___________
Me too. The Obama people need to unite the party and not put it all on Hillary. Hey Obama people petition to have Hillary put on the ticket. You want us to come your way, give us a reason.

“Len their have been 80 significant environmental “accidents” with the off shore oil rigs in the past couple of years.”
Good. A hard claim is made.
Ok, show the citations. If we are to debate, where are the accidents cited and explained?
Let’s look!

Explain to me how drilling our waters brings down the price? It takes 10 years to bring to market and besides the oil companies do have 68 millon acres to drill offshore that they are not even touching. It isn’t a matter of supply the oil compainies are sticking a knife in our backs.

No one surfs by swimming behind the wave.
Besides, in ten years gas prices will be falling during Hillary Clinton’s second term as President.
Of course, my car will be running on evaporated milk by then. My neighbor will be out blowing the leaves off his driveway. The kneepads help a lot they say.

No surprise that Hillary would have been a drag. Her old-timey “I’m a fighter” politics are a relic of the past. Most Independents want a new level of discourse and Hillary would not have provided it.

I’m watching Tim Russert’s son Luke, hug Hillary at his dad’s memorial service and the camera is on she and Bill like no other politicans. The news just isn’t as exciting with the Clinton’s not around. Media still eats them up…here I’m watching MSNBC and the camera wont’s leave the Clintons.

If they really want the numbers they should go to a beauty shop.
In Florida the majority of women voters I talk to will not vote for Obama or McCain.
They will either write in , or not vote.
NOT VOTING IS A CHOICE FOR US> NO MORE PICKING THE LESS OF TWO EVILS>

Posted by: Who Knows So What Who Cares | June 18, 2008, 9:05 pm 9:05 pm

I have no idea who these people polled, but in NorthWest Georgia and Southern Tennessee, I do not know anyone voting for Hussein Obama or John McCain. Admittedly, the lessor of two evils comments prevail in conversations as no one in this area feels we have a worthy candidate for president. Also, it would not be a good idea for Howard Dean or Nancy Pelosi to run for dog-catcher in this area after the way he has behaved and shoved Hussein down our throats and dished Mrs. Clinton for months. Furhter, Al Gore ruined his political career this week when he basically slapped the Clinton’s in the face. The majority of people I know, work with, and associate with are joining the band-wagon and are planning to vote for neither Hussein nor John but rather plan to write-in their vote for Hillary Clinton … including myself.

Hillary has just the right combination of strength and compassion, grace and grit, intelligence and appeal. No man or woman, before or after her, can hope to win the hearts and minds of such a broad and diverse coalition of Americans as she has. I have no doubt the DNC passed up on a once in a lifetime president. Now, it seems, Barack wants to derail her from the VP slot, too. If he were truly a unifier and man of hope as he claims, he would show more courage in working closely with his former rival. Is he afraid of her intelligence, her charisma, and her ability to garner as many votes as he has? His VP choice shall reveal a lot more about him. For many Clinton supporters who already doubt his strength and integrity, his VP decision is the last and final test of whether they will commit their vote to him. Some other Clinton supporters may fall in line with the party and just vote for him b/c the political climate seems to warrant no other choice. However, wouldn’t it be better for him, even if he became president, to have behind him a more passionate, concerted coalition of supporters?

“Explain to me how drilling our waters brings down the price?”

For argument sake lets say that the democrats are correct and it is speculators that are driving up the price of oil. Speculators drive up the price of oil by buying it now in anticipation of selling it for more in the future (in essence they are hording oil, if only on paper). If we have more supply coming on line in the future they will not be able to sell that oil for as much in the future and as a consequence have less incentive to buy oil now. This will put more oil in the market now, thus bringing down the price.
