Off-Message Alert! New Democratic Congressman Slams Democratic Budget for Raising Taxes

Rep. Bill Foster, D-Illinois — whom we last covered on this blog when he won the special election for the Illinois U.S. House seat formerly occupied by House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois — has voted against the conference report on the budget being pushed by the Democrats in the House.

“I can’t support a budget, from either party, that raises taxes on the middle class," Foster said in a statement. "This bill hurts families all across the 14th District by eliminating the 10-percent bracket for lower-income taxpayers, reinstating the marriage penalty and increasing taxes on small businesses and investments.  I campaigned on a platform of middle class tax relief, and I was elected to Washington to bring about change.  When asked to choose between my party and the people I represent, I will choose the families of the 14th District every single time.”

As House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, helpfully points out Foster’s take contradicts statements by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., (watch HERE) and House Budget Committee chairman John Spratt, D-SC (watch HERE.)

I know that the Democratic leaders in Congress have taken the pay as you go vow, meaning they will not fund programs that will increase the defecit. When will the learn that raising taxes on hard working Americans is not the Answer. How about a windfall profit tax on Oil companies? How about eliminating the tax incentives to source jobs overseas? It is admirable to want to be responsible and not contribute to the defecit which is pervasive in the Republican culture. Raising taxes on the middle class is never the solution, ever. Duh.

Stop Obama!!! He will raise your tax to the hell. As far as we know, he is going to raise for family earning more than $75K (a lot of middle-class will be affected by this). He will raise capital gain tax for everyone. He will also eliminate the limit for social security tax, i.e, more tax for middle-class.

Posted by: george | June 9, 2008, 4:52 pm 4:52 pm

Nobody like to have their taxes raised.
True Blue is right on doing those things to big profit companies, but we have to be careful here. Raising taxes on big oil companies will work to a point, but if we go to far then we will push them out of business. Businesses have in general been given to many breaks in the area of taxes and it is time to really examine them and stop giving them away like tic tacs. Taxes loop holes should be closed on the rich/weathy and increase their taxes, again to a point. I mean how much profit is enough, 10 million, 1 billion, what? Employess are the reason they make those big profits but they usually do not share them unless they get a tax break for doing so. Raise taxes, but watch where you do so…

True Blue Dem
All corporate taxes of any kind are passed on to the consumer as a cost of doing business. And, taxing companies makes them less able to compete in the global economy and therefore, to expand and to increase unemployment.
Bad idea!

Whoopi claims on The View that we don’t know what either candidate stands for. Joy Behar won’t let Hasselbeck finish a sentence. Fox has the fair news and Elizabeth is the centrist???
Doesn’t anyone think it a bit late for us to be asking ourselves what the candidates must believe in much less point to their wives as justification for their candidacy?
The Democrats are off the rails and the Republicans are still gathering wood for the boilers. Not exactly the changes we had in mind. Is the trend to for the Obama campaign to stay aloof until after the election? The term for that is hidden agenda. Do the Republicans expect us to vote against instead of for a candidate? That is no agenda.
A great start to the Big Show? NOT!

50% of capital gains tax is paid by the wealthiest 1% of the population. Tax the hell out of it. Make it a progressive tax. Same for estate tax, which most people NEVER EVEN HAVE TO PAY (they are not rich enough). The gap between rich and middle class is now wider than it has been in 80 years. Don’t buy the republican scare tactics. The New Deal and taxes on business and the top 1% is what created the middle class. Don’t let them let you think otherwise. STOP OVER TAXING THE MIDDLE CLASS. The Democratic Majority in the senate and house, have ran this country in the past years, with the people suffering. In hope to blame it on bush and increase chances of getting a democrat into the Presidency.
To have super power in the government, and controlling interest over the people and government.
Yes, sure they will make more domestic programs, to make the people Dependant on the government.
It is going to blow up in their faces.
Obama already has obligations to the Black community. He has to come through with. Pelosi and dean a reid might think they can stop him, But He only needs the position to do what he wants.
His Apology from the government for slavery, will open the government up for lawsuits and definite reparations.
Congratulations Pelosi and dean and reid for destroying our country.

“Congratulations Pelosi and dean and reid for destroying our country”
The country will be fine. The DNC is in big trouble but that’s ok.
Has Obama mentioned an apology and reparations? I’ve heard he wants to decriminalize marijuana but where does he actually say that?
Citations, folks. Citations.

We need to share the wealth. If America can spend billions to wage war in Iraq, then America can spend billions to improve the lives of those who live in our inner cities. Obama will start by making sure that Affirmative Action is protected and expanded to fill goverment jobs with people of color, especially with those who live in our inner-cities. More government jobs will mean more government service to Americans. It will also mean less unemployed in our inner cities, since Obama will create many new government job programs like FDR during the depression. People of color need good paying jobs, and government jobs are good paying jobs. This will help out everyone because it will stimulate the national economy. It will also bring hope to the unemployed people of color, and it will bring a real change on how our government is ran.

Posted by: DaShawn | June 9, 2008, 5:14 pm 5:14 pm

People of color sense that Obama is going to bring us real change. Don’t get upset. Republicans hire Republicans, and if Hillary won, she would have filled more government jobs with women. African-Americans overwhelmingly support Obama, and Obama will reward their overwhelming political support, especially since filling as many government jobs with people of color will also help remedy the social inequalities between white and black Americans.
Obama 08″ Real Change that We Can Believe In

Posted by: DaShawn | June 9, 2008, 5:19 pm 5:19 pm

Spugee, African-Americans have suffered under Bush, and it is only right for Obama to remedy this by expanding government set-asides for minority contractors and Affirmative Action for government employment. Unemployment is running rampant in our inner-cities because African-Americans are refused jobs because of the color of our skin. This is why Obama will protect and expand Affirmative Action, and why he will use Affirmative Action to fill as many government jobs as he can with people of color. Obama is going to bring real change to people of color, who deserve to be rewarded for their overwhelming political support and who need good paying government jobs to prosper during these tough economic times.

Posted by: DaShawn | June 9, 2008, 5:25 pm 5:25 pm

Well said, Spugee. It is totally unfair that we work really hard but get tax raised a lot to support those who solely reply on government to make their living.

Just be careful who you vote for. Some of these comments are the truth and if you want your country destroyed with only the AA population getting benefits while your taxes go up to pay for this – then vote obama. Be the sucker he knows you are.

Have you ever seen the race card played so prominently before? Ever? This election is a sham and all we are getting from this now is that the blacks are more than entitled to being so hurt by the Republicans. Total and unforgiving lies. The black populations sees an opportunity to get and take more from the US government than ever before and they will all play the race card for it. Obama has created a monster he will never be able to control. If they don’t get their way from him, they will riot. Watch.

America is a wealthy country. The only problem is only a few have most of the wealth, while most in our inner-cities are struggling to put food on our tables. This is what Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger, and Louis Farrakahn are righteously angry about, even though they are being attacked for speaking out against why America can spend hundreds of billions of dollars to kill innocent Iraqis, but not spend enough money to help people of color in our inner cities. Obama is going to bring real change that people of color can believe in. He is going to make sure that America’s wealth is going to be shared fairly.

Shawn:
If affirmative action has granted the opportunity of a chance at the presidency then it’s job has been well done.
But since it has accomplished what it intended, it should no longer be available only to blacks and other minorities!
It should be expanded to include ALL COLORS!!!!!
Otherwise, it might be viewed as racist!
And you wouldn’t want THAT, would you?

Reverand Wright is just telling the truth, but he has been demonized by the Media for doing so. African-Americans are being discriminated against because of the color of our skin. There is no excuse for people of color to be struggling in our inner-cities, when Western European countries take care of their poor and needy. Obama is going to bring real change to America, and Americans are embracing it. It is going to require expanding goverment job programs, like FDR did during the depression, but hiring our inner-city unemployed will bring real hope and change that is sorely needed in America.
Obama 08: Real Change That We Can Believe In

George, the discrimination toward people of color for the last eight years needs to be remedies. Affirmative Action and government set-aside contract for minority businesses are just tools to equal the playing feel. Of course, Obama is going to reward people of color for supporting him. Republicans reward Republicans. Why should Obama not help those who support him? After all, to the victors goes the spoils.

Posted by: DaShawn | June 9, 2008, 5:43 pm 5:43 pm

True Blue Dem, implementing a windfall profit tax on the oil companies will actually lower the production of oil. That is what happened from 1980-1988 when Congress previously implemented a windfall profit tax on the oil companies. The Congressional Research Service found that domestic oil production dropped between 1/2% and 4.8% during that period. Less supply will mean even higher prices.

Posted by: James Danley | June 9, 2008, 5:45 pm 5:45 pm

Instead of spending your tax money to build more nuclear weapons, Obama wants to spend it to help rebuild our inner-cities. However, people of color face discrimination because of the color of our skin, which is why Obama will protect and expand Affirmative Action.
People of color also need good paying jobs, which Affirmative Action in federal job employment will give us.
Washington D.C. is filled with people of color. It is only right that federal jobs in Obama’s Administration are filled through Affirmative Action by those most loyal to him.

Posted by: DaShawn | June 9, 2008, 5:49 pm 5:49 pm

Spugee, like it or not, Obama is going to bring real change and hope for all Americans– especially people of color, who are the most loyal to him. This is how politics works; that is, politicians reward those who support them– and who supports Obama more than his own people?

America is a wealthy country. Obama is just going to divert money being spent on war to help our inner cities.

Posted by: DaShawn | June 9, 2008, 5:54 pm 5:54 pm

DaShawn, you wrote: “Unemployment is running rampant in our inner-cities because African-Americans are refused jobs because of the color of our skin.” And who are the local politicians running the inner-cities? They are mostly Democrats. Why aren’t the local politicians taking care of their jurisdictions? It isn’t the responsibility of the federal government to manage the local communities. Although, it is the federal government’s responsibility to enforce federal anti-discrimination laws.

Posted by: James Danley | June 9, 2008, 5:54 pm 5:54 pm

The truth is America is the world’s greatest economic power, and its economy is 6 times larger than China.
Western European countries take care of their needy, and America can too. The only thing that is required is to reallocate money being spent on the U.S. Military, which is by far more powerful than any other nation in the world, to helping our poor and needy. This is what Reverand Wright, Michael Pfleger, and Louis Farrakahn are being demonized for calling on our government to do so. Spending hundreds of billions on nuclear weapons and bombs has only made America more enemies. Obama is going to change this. Whether you like it or not, America is embracing the real change that Obama is going to bring.

DeShawn, right now the top 50% of the nation’s wage earners account for 97% of the total federal income tax revenue. In 2006, the median household income was $48,000. That means that half of America’s households earn less than $48,000; and they are burdened with paying only THREE PERCENT of the total federal income tax revenue. (NOTE: The top 25% of the nation’s wage earners account for 86% of the total federal income tax revenue.) To make these groups pay even more would be UNFAIR!

James Danley, our inner cities are filled with unemployed minority youths, who can’t get jobs because of the color of their skin. Instead, of having them end up in prison, why not give them government jobs instead? The expansion of Affirmative Action during Obama’s administration will do this. Why pay $20,000 a year to pay for each year of prison for minority youth, when you can have them work for $20,000 a year rebuilding our blighted inner cities? Obama has the wisdom to see that real change is needed in our country. All it will take is Obama establishing new priorities for America from waging war to creating prosperity for those who live in our impoverished inner cities.

Posted by: DaShawn | June 9, 2008, 6:09 pm 6:09 pm

I would like to see the US gov. lower taxes on life essentials such as car gas, phone bills, TV outlets, and thousands of hidden taxes. In my state local and state taxes are so high that I pay about 15% on every dollar spent plus the federal tax on top of that. It would not bother me so much if our gov. people would spend on the essentials but they spend too much on give-away programs, programs that Obama wants to increase. Peoople should be be responsible and accountable and not expect Uncle Sam to bail them out of bad decisions or personal irresponsibility.

Posted by: Mary | June 9, 2008, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm

A, there is no reason why America can’t be like Sweden or Germany, who takes care of their poor. Why do you oppose Obama fixing our blighted inner cities? Would you rather see minority youth sell drugs and commit crimes, instead of working in goverment job programs?

Posted by: DaShawn | June 9, 2008, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm

One way or the other, Americans are going to pay for its struggling inner city youth. It can either pay for their incarceration or by giving them government work program jobs. This is a problem that needs to be fixed. It is no more communist than FDR expanding government work programs in the Great Depression.

Minorities need to bootstrap themselves a bit before opening their hand. The problems with illegitimate and fatherless children is running rampant. It’s more than a case of discrimination, it’s a lot the case of lifestyle and choices.
Other minorities don’t seem to have that problem. Asian immigrants seem to integrate well into society.
So, what’s the real problem?

People need to stop making excuses and take responsibility for their actions. If you are waiting for a Government handout and blaming society for all of you problems, then you are not looking in the mirror. You are rewarded for your own hard work in this country, no matter what your skin color is. And that holds true whether you are in school or on the job.

DaShawn, you wrote: “Western European countries take care of their needy, and America can too.”
Sweden is one of the most generous welfare states. According to the BNET Business Network: “Swedes enjoy free public schooling and university training; health care at nominal fees; free medicines after the first C$150 annual expenditure; generous pensions, unemployment benefits and pay for sick leave; highly subsidized child care, elder care, theatre and other leisure activities; and so on.”
BUT the BNET Business Network also states: “Even for someone earning a low wage, the sum of income tax plus payroll tax plus value-added taxes amounts to 60 per cent of earnings.”
Right now the lowest two federal income tax brackets for Americans are 10% and 15%. If President Bush’s 2001 tax cuts are allowed to expire, those two tax brackets will revert back to 15% and 28%.

DeShawn, you do have a valid point regarding the unemployment rate of minority youths in inner-cities. But a huge part of the problem is that in many of the inner-cities the high school dropout rate is 50% or higher. The schools are failing to education our youth! Without at least a high school diploma, finding a job is going to be almost impossible — even most government jobs require a high school diploma. There are only so many openings in professional sports, the entertainment industry and the like.
You praise Sen. Obama! Yet, he was in a position for over a decade to improve the schools in Chicago. Apparently he was all rhetoric back then. What makes you believe he isn’t all rhetoric now?

People of color are voting for Obama because we know that Obama is going to bring real change to our government.
If McCain gets elected, he will either reduce Affirmative Action or end it. Obama will protect and expand affirmative action. Obama will bring more people of color to government positions, which will make it more diverse. This will also reward those who supported him the most. There is nothing wrong with this, because McCain will fill government jobs with Republicans if he gets elected.

DeShawn, one of the most important responsibilities of the federal government is national defense. Failing to keep up with the latest technology in warfare will only embolden our enemies to attempt an attack. Look what happened on 9/11 when just four planes were hijacked and “only” 3,000 lives were lost. Imagine the devastation if the terrorists used WMDs. But getting back to your point…
If we shifted the military budget to the inner-cities — first of all, corrupt politicians would see to it that they get a huge chunk before any of the money is disbursed — there is no guarantee that anything will change. The Democrats have held nearly veto-proof majorities in both Houses of Congress for much of the last 60 years. Why weren’t these problems solved then? The Democrats have no intention of solving problems. They know that they will be re-elected by just TALKING about “change,” just TALKING about “fixing problems.”

Why do you equate the military in terms of nuclear weapons. Military technology improvements have saved thousands of lives and things like the drones give us better intelligence and a safer working environment in the military. It’s MUCH more than nuclear.

Republicans, America tried it your way and where did it get us? Now America is embracing the real change that Obama is going to bring us. For the first time, in a long time, people of color have real hope. America is going to turn from war to expanding social programs for its poor and needy. America is turning from discrimination against people of color to their inclusion at the top levels of our government. America is turning from its failed neo-conservative policies to new policies that promote the social welfare of its most disadvantaged people. America will benefit from bringing more diversity into our federal government.
Sweeping social change is coming to America. Don’t get angry, become part of the change!

Barky is EXACTLY a liar per se: about Rezko, about public financing, about Ayers and Dohrn, about his grandmother, about his “church”, about his father being a goatherd, about laundering money in his law firm, etc.
If the Democrats actually nominate this person, we should surround Denver and KEEP em there.

Everyone over 14 should be required to be responsible for their own actions. Stay in school, stay away from crime and drugs and don’t have children before you are able to support them. I do believe in a helping hand for those who help themselves first by being responsible and accountable. Skin color, gender or economic status is not as important as self responsibility.
I don’t want my taxes raised to pay for irresponsibility of someone else.

DaShawn, sorry I misspelled your name last time. School vouchers would allow inner-city parents the option of pulling their children out of failing schools and placing them in schools that are more dedicated to their students’ needs than that of the unions. Education is the long term answer to the high inner-city minority unemployment rates.
Now as for a short term fix, if it were my responsibility to solve the problem from a federal government perspective, I would implement the fair tax and eliminate the income tax. This would immediately give every worker his entire paycheck. This will open up the flood gates of consumption. This will mean millions of jobs and more money to the local and federal coffers. But most importantly it will give families more money to give to charities. I believe the short term answer to the inner-city youth crisis lies in the hands of charities not the federal government. Local charities can provide one-on-one tutoring; mentoring; help the youth get their GEDs (where needed); and ultimately locate jobs. That is the way to go!

DaShawn, you wrote: “America is going to turn from war to expanding social programs for its poor and needy.” We have had Welfare and Medicare for over 40 years. All it has done is make things worse. It is time that people take responsibility for their own lives and their own family members and not depend upon the American taxpayers. The existing entitlement programs are going to bankrupt this country. And now the Liberals want to implement womb-to-tomb universal health care and free college. Even if the war ended today, we would not have enough money to pay for the new entitlements in addition to the old entitlements.
Sweden is able to do what they do because EVERYONE pays about 60% of their earnings in taxes. And Sweden only has a population of about 9 million people. You want to have their system here for 300 million people! Yet you want only the “wealthy” to pay for everything. Well, you put that much burden on the “wealthy,” and eventually the “wealthy” will stop making money. Then were will you get your freebies?
