Olbermann Slams Couric for Saying Clinton “Received Some of the Most Unfair, Hostile Coverage I’ve Ever Seen”
As we covered earlier in the week, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric assailed some of the media treatment of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY.
"However you feel about her politics, I feel that Sen. Clinton received some of the most unfair, hostile coverage I’ve ever seen," Couric said, which she charged was at least in part rooted in sexism helping to lead to her defeat.
Couric recalled one "prominent member of the commentariat" saying he "found it hard to be objective when it came to" covering Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois. She said she remembers thinking, "that’s your job" and that he should "find another line of work."
Last night on MSNBC, one of the anchors whom Clinton campaign officials (or former officials) consider to be one of the chief offenders in their charge of media bias– Keith Olbermann — named Couric "Worst Person in the World."
He called her sexism charge against the media "nonsense" and "a little Kool-aid ish but that’s her opinion and she’s entitled to it."
Then he said she wasn’t entitled to her comments about the "prominent member of the commentariat" who struggled to be objective.
"He didn’t name him, maybe because she didn’t bother to look it up," Olbermann said, identifying the individual as an NBC Correspondent whom in Olbermann’s view had been "speaking with refreshing honesty, acknowledging that the environment of that campaign and the ferocity of the candidate’s supporters in the primaries challenged a reporter to be especially professional and vigilant in separating the hype from the news."
Olbermann said the reporter was "utterly objective and accurate" and of Couric’s charge that he "should find another line of work" Olbermann said that "by leaving NBC and the Today Show Ms. Couric already has."
Watch HERE.
At the Huffington Post, Rachel Sklar writes that for Olbermann to "sit there on MSNBC and say that it’s nonsense is a bit rich, considering that some of the higher-profile episodes of embarrassing sexist-or-perceived-as-sexist commentary has come from that network."
I’m hesitant to even post about a media fight, but this one gets into a subject we’ve discussed a lot on this blog — the coverage of the Clinton and Obama campaigns.
So…discuss.

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
I never watch or listen to Olberman anymore. He is way too biased for me. The media and the world ARE much harder on women than men. Men are strong if they disagree, women are just pushy if they stand up for what they believe. It’s still the same in most industry, too. Olberman is not Mr. Perfect. He’s human, and he’s wrong a lot. I’m an independent voter and I find most of the media is ultra conservative and leans toward the Republican view.

Truth hurts, huh Olberman.

Obermann is completely delusional. If he’s referring to Lee Cowan, and I assume he is, he outright declared (with a goofy look on his face and stars in his eyes) that it was hard to be objective about Obama. Matthews and Obermann’s antics regarding Obama are well known. David Schuster had an axe to grind with Hillary after being suspended for his “pimping out Chelsea” comment. Campbell Brown declared before a panel of talking heads on stage that Obama had “voted” against the Iraq war, and one of the talking heads later made the same misstatement; no one corrected either of them. That was the day I stopped watching MSNBC. They’re catering to the kool-aid cult. Not one of them is fit to wear the title of journalist; they’re nothing but propagandists.

The day of the Olbermann and Chris Matthews kind of news coverage is over. You watch – they will die out if they do not change. Mathew’s contract is coming up and he fears it won’t be renewed. If MSNBC is smart- they will not renew that morons contract- let him go back to PA and try to run for the Senate. We are sick of hearing this venom whining and griping with the hidden hope of trying to show how clever they are. They aren’t! They are boring and stupid! With Bush going- we don’t need this type of reporting anymore. On to the new hot trend in news coverage- black calm level headed types such as Harold Ford, Jr. You just watch. The day of the white male is over!

keith olberman,
looks like a reject from the superman movie, i’ll bet he hates ben alfleck,
i don;t even call olberman a journalist, to me he is just a personality, i suppose the more outrageous and foolish he looks and sounds, the more money he must make.
morining meeting with him must be-keith you really said so crazy stuff last night, the ratings went through the roof, can you try to top it tonight?
so olberman comes on and gets crazier- and round and round he goes. when he stops, nobody knows,
not even keith. when the audience gets tired of his non news, and realizes what a empty, no news kind of guy he is, they will stop watching, and the money will dry up and no more foolishiness from olberman.
i am sure in the clinton’ real world he does not even rate,
he is just jealous they are smart, and at the top of their game.
and he is just block headed, glasses wearing do and say anything to keep ratings up to keep the job,
i will be he has to wear white cotton socks because he sweats so much.
he and chris spitting all over the place matthews

What has happened to the days of TV news reporting when you really wanted to watch the news at 6:00pm and 11:00pm? What happened to real journalist types like Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings when you felt connected to the story they reported? What happened to respect? What happened to manners and good and kind? What happened to ladies and gentleman?
Keith Olbermann is a very rude, arrogant and very unintelligent type of reporter that feels its his right to rip and smear anyone and everyone. He thinks that smearing people makes him very important and a great journalist. I find him more of the Geraldo Rivera type – just anything to make him look good and feel better about himself. Chris Matthews should just go wash his mouth out with soap.
I will be eternally grateful if MSNBC would just cancel Keith Olbermann, his bad manners, his phony “good American” act and his Salem Witch Hunts. I’ve always thought Keith Olberman has always been the worst person in the world.
Thanks Katie for have the courage to say what you feel and not backing down the the obama crowd. They will soon start suing people for slander, all the while slandering everyone and everything in their wake.
Go Katie.

Olbermann is becoming really scary.
He is poisoning the airwaves with his hate speak.
Young people are listening to his rants and taking them at face value.
Tonight he will spew his venom and further the ridiculous twisting of John McCain’s “not too important” comment.
He is the #1 proponent of Hillary hatred.
He is Obama’s rabid pit bull.
Please, somebody in charge, please do something about him. Take him off the air.
He is ruining our country with his hate.

Pot kettle black white. Yadda yadda.
Turn off the pundits and listen to the candidates on CSPAN where they are not edited. The MSM is discredited at this point and all sides admit it.
It will take a decade of hard work for the American media to regain its reputation. Meanwhile, make sure that advertisers on their programs are aware of your displeasure. The only way left to make them clean up their act is to hurt their wallets.
It would be interesting to hear the take of professors in the colleges of journalism on this topic. The problem is journalists will have a hard time investigating their own as long as their employers have a say in the editing suites. On the other hand, if you watch the live events, it is easy to spot the editing and divine the intent.

Olbermann needs to be fired. He is the worst. He is so in the bag for Obama, that I would like to know what gives him the right to insult and demean a woman…a woman who could be president.
Posted by: maggie | June 12, 2008, 2:41 pm 2:41 pm
Clinton was all too eager to exploit sexism when it suited her. When Bill Clinton said of the other Dem. candidates that they were “picking on a girl”, he committed one of the biggest sins possible for someone of my generation (born in the 1950′s) who cringes everytime a woman is called a “girl”.
As Myst said above: “I think it is funny that a candidate with “testicular fortitude”, like Senator Clinton would hide behind sexism when she just got beat fair and square. I think that if Senator Obama lost and cried racism, the media would be all over him like white on rice. And that’s the truth.”

Olverman who gets his news from mediamatters / moveon.org and their controller George Soros (Far left billionaire) is hammer Couric, what a joke Olverman with his 3 viewers!!
I do not like Hilary but she did get unfair treatment from the MSM but then again so does Pres. Bush and other Republicans. The problem is with the modern democrat party who are controlled by Marxists like Obama is the Race card trumps the gendar card!!
The MSM defended Obama, even in the debates it was obvious!!
Funny that Clinton stated Fox news was the most fair.
Here is one thing to ponder dems, in reality Hilary got the majority votes, because you can not count the vote in MI , because they voted uncommited, if they really wanted to vote Obama they could of wrote his name in.
So the DNC decided that the uncommited wanted to vote for Obama, when in fact they could of wanted anyone!!
Beware Marxists have taken over the once great Democrat Party!!

olbermannfan must be the REAL olberman trying to justify how great he is. Of course, we know all those comments that “praise and justify” the orange face olbermann are just those paid obama hate monger hired to continue to spread hate – the more hate they spread – like olberman and matthews, the more of the Clinton voters will turn to McCain.
I really like a man to be a gentleman. Too bad that olbermann and his sidekick “Tingly” matthews were never taught about how much women like classy men.
But on the other hand, it really takes courage and intellect and intelligence and understanding to be a real man. That is a distinction that olbermann will never achieve. Just an orange face who gets so worked up he spits at the camera.

Isn’t this old news. The democratic race was Sen Clinton’s to win in a cakewalk. Every possible advantage was hers (and her husband’s). She had to work to lose it. In all honesty, I think she was a much better candidate than her campaign. Those advisors and staff hired around her should have been fired way earlier in the campaign. But please. Sexism? Do you think there was any racism? How about reverse sexism, whereby women wouldn’t vote for any of the male candidates because there was a female candidate. Do you think that many blacks voted for a black because there was a black candidate? Or that some whites didn’t vote for a black because he was black? Or some men didn’t vote for a woman becuase she was a woman? Give it a break. Get on to the real issues that affect us and our country for God’s sake. These stupid whinings are just diversions!

I long for Chet Huntley and David Brinkley, Peter Jennings etc. Reporting is no longer a real profession. The covereage this primary was abominable. No attempt to mask the bias but perhaps these people don’t even recognize it.
ABC was the better network for coverage. It is really sad to see in a country blessed with the First Amendment to descend to this.

They are OBAMA STUCKIES.

I personally think Olberman is entertaining as hell to watch, but see him as just that; an entertainer, not a journalist. Furthermore, I also have to admit that he would be wise to shut his hole vis-a-vis Hillary/sexism charges. Why needlessly antagonize a whole group of voters still smarting after a narrow loss in a bitterly contested primary. If us Dems don’t stop picking at this scab, it’s never going to heal and we all lose come November.

It has been difficult watching the political shows this season. They spoke about personalities and not the issues that I wanted to know about. I didn’t care that Hillary had her hair in a couffe or that Obama played basketball with the guys. We still don’t know how the candidates really stand on many of the issues. Chris Matthews and Olbermann were so busy slamming people that they didn’t address what we really needed to know- The issues and where each candidate stood. To me that is bad political reporting. I am seeing it all over again between McCain and Obama. They are not addressing the real issues that middle class America cares about.

Keith Olbermann has guts accusing someone else of drinking the “Kool-Aid”. I mean this is the idiot who spews out Obama talking points as if they are God’s words.
Also, Katie Couric is in a better position to know sexism when she sees it, just by the virtue of her gender. And Olbermann has no cred on this subject considering he works at MSNBC.
Posted by: Joan | June 12, 2008, 2:54 pm 2:54 pm
I agree with Keith Olberman the media coverage was fair.
Have we forgotten how Rev. Wright was pasted on every major news network before the PA, IN and NC crucial primaries. Have we forgoten about the media coverage of Bitter-gate, Bill Ayers, Pastor Pfleger, and Michelle Obama’s “proud” comments.
No one forced Bill Clinton to compare an Obama victory to Jesse Jackson. No one pushed Hillary to lie about a simple trip to Bosnia. No one pushed Hillary into voting for the Iraqi War. No one forced Hillary to hire horrible strategist and ignore the smaller states.
And most important
No one forced Hillary to run as the “inevitable” candidate.
I believe it was on Katie Couric show last year when asked if she ever thought about the possibilities of losing this nomination, Hillary’s reponse was and I quote, “IT WILL BE ME”.

When I first starting researching Senator Obama there was three million sites of his lies on the net. Today, there is thirty-four million sites of his lies on the net. Of course, probably one or two could be duplicates but he sure has been busy for last six months spewing out more lies every time he speaks. The man is a fraud and a dud. Anyone except Obama, even a monkey.

Okberman should not go there…but Couric is honestly looking for somewhere to puut her anger because she is looking to use sexism (as many have reported she has already started using it) to say that is why she is not doing well in the evening news…
someone please tell Couric what their lighting designer is doing to her every evening.
She doesn’t loo friendly…they are lighting her to make her eyes look like the spawn of satan.
Some idiot news producer seems to have forgotten the reason Moonves hired her in the first place…
because Americans want their news anchors to feel trustworthy.
I ask everyone to go look at Courics broadcast and ask yourelves…does she not look like a robot laser eyed version of the woman with the big warm eyes who use to be on the Today show.
Now she looks like a ride at Disney.
Get a new lighting designer and set PLEASE…you will see you ratings go up.
and maybe you won’t be looking to blame every failure by a woman on sexism… because you won’t be failing as bad.

Coverage about WHICH CLINTON?:
the MAN ROLE (TESTICULAR FORTITUDE ONE)
or WOMAN ROLE SHE Played?…
….Well my question already clearly points out HOW HILLARY PLAYED SEXISM IN EVERY WAY possible toward her favor…..so its HPOCRITIC TO COMPLAIN about sexism after trying to milking it from both sides.
Posted by: moeen | June 12, 2008, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm
I think they’re both right, and they’re both wrong. There WAS a very casual misogyny about some of the coverage, and that frequently came from MSNBC. That said, it was largely the stuff of middlebrow observational comedy. I’m not excusing it, I’m just saying that didn’t have nearly the God-like power it has been given by the likes of Couric.
On the other hand, there were several overtly sexist moments in the campaign, and these were almost exclusively injected by non-media elements. And in every case, these sexist moments saved the Clinton campaign. She and her supporters can claim their loss was caused by sexism, but the day-to-day reality of the campaign shows that each time she was down, a sexist comment riled her supporters and resurrected her campaign.
If two those doofuses hadn’t shouted “Iron my shirt!” in New Hampshire, the primary would have been over in January….

May I ask the Democrats on this board to pleeeeaaaassseee remember that the acidic comments made by BOTH Hillary and Obama supporters (e.g. those posting comments here and elsewhere, Olberman, Matthews, etc) ARE NOT the positions of the candidates themselves! Don’t let your legitimate hatred of them translate into hatred of the candidate. Even a broken clock is correct twice a day, and while I’m not a fan of Katie Couric, even the worst newscasters are bound to be right sometimes. Hillary Clinton WAS treated like garbage by most networks. It’s ironic that some people have said Fox News was fairer with Hillary than any other network.
Apparently, Fox News is the only major network NOT taking orders from the DNC, which had decided from the get-go to sabotage Hillary’s campaign.

Olbermann is a sexist pig. Its that simple, and his hatred of women who are far more successful than he will ever be is pitifully obvious.
If MSNBC had a clue, they would get rid of him. But, then again, they seem to want to be the network of tabloid news. I think they are just as afraid of women as poor little Keith is.
Its a sad commentary on our country when a NONjournalist like him is even given airtime.

everyone is sensitive to perceived slights as sexism racism…etc..
but it is hard to say that Hillary Clinton received some of the most SEXIST coverage…
did she see what obama went through for the second half of this primary…and how Hillary has been treated by that same press for 4 years.
It is an argument made out of clay at best.
and Couric did trash a reporter who really was unbiased…if she was going to pick a reporter and trash him for being biased she might have wanted to pick up a mirror as she was giving the speech don’t ya think.
and as well tell her to GET A NEW LIGHTING DESIGNER on her broadcast…get her back to looking as trustworthy as she use to like the other two networks do …get rid of Robot eyes.
The she may not perceive as much sexism because she won’t be looking to use it for her own failure…as she has been reported to lately do.
It’s not about her being a woman…it has to be about she looks weird on those broasdcasts…get a new LIGHTING DESIGNER…someone tell her please…and Moonves.

(And to think that just 4 months ago I was vowing to getting around to blocking Fox Cable from my TV’s as too biased.)
Yet, at every opportunity, Olbermann’s latest theme is how “fair” Clinton was treated in the media in general, and MSNBC in particular.

yeah, keith olberman. you are completely correct, no matter what the screaming, coddled, feminist permanent “victim” class says. there is no single group in this country that is more coddled, entitled or obnoxious than the katie couric, hillary clinton, et al crowd of women’s studies man-haters. they will stop at NOTHING to maintain their privileges. they will be supported by vast numbers of straight men who are petrified to retort and NO ONE will tell them to shut the hell up. this is an alice in wonderland world here where 4,000 young boys can be slaughtered in iraq, where women live 7 years longer than men, where men are by far the greatest victims of violence, where men do all of the dangerous work, where men are sent to prison for everything and women can murder 3, 4, 5 children or blow their husband away in front of their children and serve ZERO consequences. breathtaking hypocrisy and entitlement.

Keith Olberman is one of the prominent members of the Most Sexist Nasty Boys Club. It wasn’t sexism – it was hate filled misogyny. They certainly nominated Obama but I don’t beleive they can get him elected. Most of the male commentators were shameful in their display of their bias. The good thing is that a lot of us turned them off for good. It’s not over.

I have yet to see a single comment where someone pointed to one instance in which Keith Olberman made sexist comments. You can argue that he was bad at hiding his support for Obama’s campaign, but just because someone doesn’t like a female candidate doesn’t make them sexist. Aside from some genuine instances of sexism (Chris Matthews, the Hillary nutcracker, the “iron my shirt” morons), Clinton was treated with kid gloves. Any other candidate that lost 11 straight primaries and had a 2% chance of winning the nomination mathematically would have been written off for dead. Only Hillary was allowed to launch continuous attacks on the guy with the 98% chance of being her party’s nominee.

I agree with C.J., their days are numbered. There are too many people who have turned off MSNBC and CNN for the effect not to be felt. We must stop supporting their sponsors.
For all of those posts here that believe Senator Clinton wasn’t treated badly…obviously you have been brainwashed. I do have empathy for all of you, for if this media is allowed to continue their biased reporting, if Senator Obama does become President, I fear you will wake up one day and find that all of the abhorrent actions where the current administration turned their backs on the Constitution, will suddenly look like a day at the beach compared to arrogance and control exhibited by an Obama administration! Beware.

keith olberman and chris matthews would want me to believe what they said about sen. clinton was the truth.
it is a shame that people who claim to be God loving, would turn around and say some of the nasty things that have been said about sen. clinton.
sen. clinton has a mother and a daugther
and she has been a public servant all of her adult life, and really done some good and made a difference for the better in a lot of peoples lives.
I think you folks should just lay off of sen. clinton now.
she is out, the american people are the real losers, but just cannot see it yet.

Just as I was about to let go of all my primary election anger…..
Olbermann lives in his own little world where apparently his opinion is the only one that is right and the only one that matters. He and his network have said the most crude, dispicable things during the past few months. Do we have to relive his comment ‘a superdelegate needs to take Hillary into a room and only he comes out’. Nevermind the fact that Olbermann constantly has women haters like Jonathan Alter on his show.
I’m so glad Katie stepped up and talked about the sexism in an open and fair way. She was not saying that is why Hillary lost, she was just saying that’s a part of what she had to deal with.
And Olbermann YOU get yourself into another line of work! Go back to ESPN.

michelle obama made it clear she does not like and did not want sen. clinton or bill around. michelle obama said sometimes i would just like to scratch his (bill) eyes out.
now tell me, would YOU stay around if someone said that about you?
it seems to me the clintons cannot win,
if they stay away-they are sore losers,
if they stay-when obama loses they will be blamed for not working hard enough to help him win.
she endorsed him, they don’t want anything more from the clintons, so why
shouldn’t they just stay home?

The cable news is full of Cafferty’s and Olbermans. Baffoons, with over inflated egos. I don’t think he thought his comments through. And now he thinks we didn’t notice? He probably watches himself and giggles at his presumptive wit. Airbag

to your first point,i was just answering your saying if they love this country and want to be judged fairly they will campaign for him.
to that i said, they have already done a lot of good work for this country, of which i think people do or did not appreciate, or they deny it all together.
as sen. clinton said she can go back to doing the work she was doing before the camera’ came, they will continue to do good work not being elected citizens.
and to your second point.
so you are saying they don’t tell the truth, but obama needs them to get out there and convience people they are telling the truth?
your last point was not clear to me.
and i will say again, the obama’, and the majority of the obama supporters do not want the clinton’ around.
I don’t think they should force that.
because when he loses-you and everyone else will blame the clinton’
the obama’ don’t feel they need them, they don’t want them.
anyone associated with the obama have made it clear-they do not want the clinton’s.
so don’t blame the clinton’ if they don’t show up.
and as i have said from the negative press the clinton have received-they press have tried to ruin them, they have made it clear no clintons.
the clinton’ are people to.
you cannot say all the nasty things in the world about them, and then turn around and say, be a good sport, come and help, and if you don’t you are a sore loser.

Honestly folks…do you think people are going to come out and say “You’re right Katie. I was harder on Hillary for the mere fact she was a woman.” Of course they won’t admit it. People love to accuse other people of discrimination but rarely are people able to consider THEMselves as being sexist…or racist…or ableist…or homophobic….etc. etc. GREAT job Katie! Couric is dead on in her comments.
MSNBC in particular garnered special recognition for its sexist, offensive coverage from “Media Matters.”
Matthews and Olbermann both have turned into Limbaugh type, clown commentators. There is only so much screaming, in your face commentary a society can take before it tires, thankfully, of such foolishness.
I stopped watching MSNBC because it simply became so completely untrustworthy in terms of objectivity. Quite frankly, that network is now as bad as FOX.

Thanks for your great blog, which I just discovered. Katie is right on.
I’ve had to stop watching Keith O’s show over his sexism about Hillary. It pained me to do this, because I had really enjoyed him before.
I will vote for Obama, but I have to say that the biggest sadness for me this election season has been finding out how many of my favorite “ultra liberal” male commentators, and even real-life friends, are sexists. This election has really rooted them out.
It’s also sad to me that they continue to get away with it, because they know liberal women have nowhere else to turn.
What are we going to do, watch that all female liberal network? Vote for the Feminist Party? Oh right…those don’t exist.
Still a long way to go, baby.

Certainly, if anyone is in a position to see sexism in the media it is Katie Couric. The fact that she has suffered from sexism at work, however, does not mean that HRC lost the Democratic nomination due to sexism in the media. She lost because she ran a lousy campaign, and if she suffered unfairly from sexism, it was probably from Mark Penn and Terry McAuliffe and William Jefferson Clinton.
If Katie wants to keep her job, then she should start doing her job, stop whining, and stop trying to peddle the manufactured news that the networks push.

I have never understood anyone wanting to watch that show. Before he began his daily Hillary bashing, he was constantly bashing on Britney Spears, who I know nothing about and only know of her because he was obsessed with bashing her. Naturally I would change the channel, since it’s not news, just his daily rampage and verbal abuse of people. Also I could never bear his speaking with superiority, I mean really who is he to be making calls on someone like Katie Couric? She is a well respected professional. That gossip Natl. Enquirer style reporter Olberman is an obvious sexist, and he seems to either be unaware of it or doesn’t care.

Hillary didn’t lose because of sexism. Hillary lost because she and Bill were mean people in this campaign. The country’s had enough mean.
And the media didn’t criticize her because they were sexist. The media criticized her because her campaign kept trying to control the media and tell them what to write/say/show. You’d have thought by now the Clintons would have learned rule #1–don’t tick off the media. But no.
What women need is this: a better woman candidate. Then there will be no problem.

Getting slammed by Olbermann is something Katie Couric should be proud of, considering his type of journalism is closer to shockjocks.
Olbermann has embarrassed himself and it is quite ironic that he criticizes Couric, as she showed real courage to speak the truth.
While Couric seems to be stepping it up, Olbermann continues to lower journalistic standards.

Hillary Clinton politics may be debatable, but with her penchant for literally saying anything to anyone in order to win was bound to draw criticism like a magnet draws an iron filing. To say that she was subject to sex descrimination totally sidesteps, all the ways that Senator Clinton’s constant pandering for votes, and willingness to frequently paint Barak Obama as a worse choice than McCain was was the architect of her own undoing. We have had enough of the “love of self above all else” kind of entitlement politics with the current administration. In the end Hillary and the country will actaully be better off with her in a lesser but still important role.

I think it’s interesting that even among DailyKos Obama supporters there seems to be a swell of negative reaction about KO’s insistence that there was no sexism shown to Clinton during the campaign.
The man needs help! Show some sympathy. Olbermann is a man (I don’t mean that it a sexist kind of way) who has delusions of grandeur so great that he no longer lives in this universe. Be kind. Love thy neighbor. Get KO some help.

Olbermann is right to criticize Couric — her allegations in general were almost baseless. But “Worst Person in the World” in response to an allegation of misogyny at a time that KO’s network gives the women-fearing Timmeh Russert and Tweety Matthews the leading roles is completely out of line and I think damaging to the Democratic cause in that it hurts KO’s own credibility at a time that he’s about as good as it gets for Democratic-leaning anchors.

For one, Incase you didnt know Katie Couric is about to lose her job, she is not even going to fulfill her contract. So it makes sense that she would join the sore losers train. Hillary has said many things that werent even true. The media came to her defense. She had the chance to win and she lost. Not because she is a woman because she didnt have a plan. She felt entitled. Everyone is going to see thing the way they want. But lets be realistic.
Posted by: lauren | June 13, 2008, 8:43 am 8:43 am
Katie Couric’s low ratings speak volumes about her credibility. I think Hillary Clinton was treated far more seriously than more capable women running for president, i.e. Elizabeth Dole. If anything led to the demise of her campaign, it was her inability to tell the truth, her race/gender baiting, her obvious disrespect for those with differing views and her sense of entitlement. Although sexism, racism and age-ism continue to be a problem in the media, the people ultimately have the final say.
Posted by: Casual Observer | June 13, 2008, 9:36 am 9:36 am
Phil Griffin, senior vice president of NBC News and the executive in charge of MSNBC, a particular target of criticism, said that although a few mistakes had been made, that they had been corrected quickly and that the network’s overall coverage was fair.
Cable television has come under the most criticism. Chris Matthews, a host on MSNBC, called Clinton a “she-devil” and said she had gotten as far as she had only because her husband had “messed around.”
Mike Barnicle, a panelist on MSNBC, said that Clinton was “looking like everyone’s first wife standing outside a probate court.” Tucker Carlson, also on MSNBC, said, “When she comes on television, I involuntarily cross my legs.”
The establishment news media were faulted too. The New York Times wrote about Clinton’s “cackle” and The Washington Post wrote about her cleavage.
Ken Rudin, an editor at National Public Radio, appeared on CNN, where he equated Clinton with the actress Glenn Close in “Fatal Attraction.” “She’s going to keep coming back, and they’re not going to stop her,” Rudin said. He later apologized.

Olbermann’s biggest delusion of grandeur is that he actually thinks he is a journalist. He criticizes hate speech and fear mongering when he is the worst of the worst. Unfortunately, he has made O’reilly and Limbaugh look almost reasonable and Lou Dobbs a statesman.

Katie Couric conveniently omitted the many missteps of the her campaign- inability to manage finances, Bill Clinton, aversion to truth telling, offensive statements, etc.. Perhaps Ms. Couric is trying to increase ratings but that does not excuse her for making irresponsible statements.

Hillary didn’t lose the campaign because of sexism, she lost because her campaign managers made serious tactical errors.
And that is the one acknowledgement that has yet to come out of the Clinton campaign…they point to sexism, to the media, to the super delegates. They refuse to take ANY responsibility for their own part in losing the campaign. It is just that attitude that cost them the campaign after Super Tuesday, and ultimately the race.
If you really want to see an end to sexism, then fight the good fight, and if you lose, examine why, learn from your mistakes and move forward. Don’t lose and cry sexism, it demeans all the women who work hard and succeed inspite of the odds.
Posted by: Suzanne | June 13, 2008, 11:35 am 11:35 am
Nobody is suggesting she only lost because of sexism. Many many mistakes were made. As a Clinton supporter I congratulate Senator Obama. I am trying to work towards being able to vote for him. Not because of race, but I question his honesty, competence, and veracity. Some of his political positions frankly scare me.
Katie pointed out it was one of the reasons. MSNBC has been disgraceful in their partisanship towards Obama and in allowing these sexist comments about Hillary. I find it amazing none of them have been fired. They seem to think it’s funny in fact. For some reason these are angry liberals holding a grudge. I doubt any of them even knows a black person who isn’t in a service position catering to their needs.

I think it is absolutely irresponsible of Olbermann to suggest that media coverage of the Clinton campaign has not been sexist. Watch Fox news or Chris Matthews on any given day and you will see the most disgusting public displays of sexism. Sexism cannot be completely to blame for Clinton’s loss, but it certainly was one of the biggest reasons why the male demographic did not take her campaign seriously. Iron my shirt? Hearing her voice reminds me of my nagging wife? Please.

My respect for Couric just went up tenfold. HRC got the most misogynistic coverage EVER – they eviscerated her on cable. What does that say when Fox’s ratings go through the roof because that’s the only place we can get UNBIASED coverage? I like it when journalists stand up to their own – I’d like to see Moyers, Koffel and others get in this to police their insane members.

And what’s more, CBS News was a close second just behind CNN (yes, CNN!) and MSNBC in their campaign coverage skewed extremely in Barack Obama’s favor (and anti-Hillary).

Keith Olberman is revolting. I started out the primary watching his show on occasion to see what he was about but quickly learned he was against Hillary and stopped watching it. I guess that’s how many republicans feel when they watch the liberal media “root” for a candidate and feel solice in watching someone like Sean Hannity who basically does the same thing Olberman does but it’s biased to the right. HOWEVER, you don’t generally hear ignorant, nasty put downs from Hannity, but mostly criticisms based on his opinions and facts. Perhaps if Olberman wants to be a successful “liberal” talk show host like Hannity is a successful “conservative” talk show host, he should take some lessons on how to communicate appropriately without degrading and personally attacking people. He obviously can’t handle criticisms against himself hence his response to Katie Couric’s criticism, why does he do it to others? To those who say it was Hillary’s to lose…..the media did help that along no matter what with their love for Obama. Even though the pastor was plastered everywhere, nothing explains the media’s and the pundits making up every excuse in the book for him and blowing off this issue and accepting his beautiful speech as explanation for having sat in a racist church for 20 years. Hillary got no slack…was called a racist and quite a few other choice names, sexist and all. I doubt Keith Olberman and friends will be around long. They suck and no one wants to hear that nonsense except for Obama supporters. It’s when your candidate gets attacked unfairly that you care about what the press does, otherwise you don’t usually have a complaint. But I think the general opinion of the public on this one (even those who didn’t vote for Hillary and even some republicans) thought the coverage of her was unfair. If you can’t listen to the people and stop being an ass on television then you have no business on the air.

I have boycotted CNN news, Chris Mathews, and K. Olberman. I also make a point of not buying many of the products advertised on CNN and MSNBC. No need to make them rich for being so unethical.
This grass root boycotting effort does work! After 9/11, I joined an effort to boycott all French wine for being anti-american, and that industry suffered! Join me in boycotting these unethical news channels.

It is a sad, sad day for journalism. The loss of a thoughtful, intelligent and sensible gentleman like Tim Russert coupled with the irony of a dangerous idealogue like Keith Olbermann anchoring the coverage of his untimely death made me sick to my stomach. Olbermann has no business anchoring anything resembling news. He is entitled to his opinions but if MSNBC had any journalistic values left they would at least require an opposing opinion once and a while on his show and NEVER let him anchor election coverage. I worked in news for 12 years and these past two have been the most troubling. What ever happened to fair, unbiased reporting? We’ll miss you Tim. MSNBC, please honor his legacy by yanking that hack Olbermann off the air immediately.

I wanted to express my condolences to Tim Russert’s family. He was like a brother to every person in this country. We feel as though we have lost a relative. It is ashame that we have had to lose one who always remained objective and honest and didn’t allow his objectivity to be clouded by his own prejudice. You will be sorely missed Tim! We love you!

I believe that Hillary was treated unfairly in the election and that all women feel that the female gender was mocked and ridiculed. This is why we would rather vote Republican than vote for our own party. The Dems could always count on the women block of voters and now their lack of effort to stop the sexism that political pundits and Obama’s group spewed could have very well cost Obama the election in November. Women are mobilized and are voting for McCain in November. The deplorable conduct of the pundits, Obama and Axelrod from his campaign was inexcusable. Hillary didn’t want to be treated differently, she just wanted to be treated the same as Obama, fairly and that did not happen. I think it is wonderful that women are uniting and boycotting those sexist people who have added more fuel to the fire. And, I think that in November Obama will have a very difficult time being elected. He has to win over the women, the blue collars, over 60s and the poorest of the poor. I don’t think he’ll pull it off. Women are voting Republican to teach the Democratic party a lesson. If you dump on us when we have been stalwarts for you we will come out in droves and vote Republican. I thank Keith Obermann and Chris Matthew for all their help. They are simply pushing more and more women over the edge to vote Republican in November. Keep up the good work boys! People don’t like it that we are not going to go and sit in a corner and accept whatever the Dem party throws down our throats. Those days are gone forever so get used to it. We are here to stay as a powerful force and will unit every time such nonsense happens ever again! Thank you ladies for your comments here. Keep the fire burning…
Thank you,

Studies showed that NBC/MSNBC had the most POSITIVE coverage of Evita, excuse me, Hillary.
Yes, go vote Republican, ladies. Vote for a pro-lifer who will send your children to an endless war and believes women don’t make equal pay because “they need education and training”. Cut off your noses to spite your own faces. Just don’t drag the rest of us down with you.
Posted by: Marie | June 14, 2008, 6:11 am 6:11 am
The use of Evita even if done by a woman is sexist. Sexism is so engrained in our society that people don’t even realize that they are saying something that is sexist. It like the racism talk before the 1960s, it was everywhere and people said things that were racist and didnt’ realize it just like sexist talk now.
Posted by: TheTruthIsDifficult | June 14, 2008, 8:12 am 8:12 am
Marie,
Yes, that is precisely the point. We want to drag everyone down with us for our cause. So, that in the future, when sexist behavior emerges, people will remember being drug down for our cause, and will stop the sexist behavior immediately, even if they don’t stop it because it the right thing to do, they will stop it. This is what it is all about. We are having to force our hand because the right thing was not done to us. If you want to blame someone for putting a pro-lifer and pro-war person in office in November than point the finger where it should be pointing. Point it at the Democratic party, Obama, his cohort Axelrod, the American people, the black community for turning its back on a couple like the Clintons who gave a combined amount of service in the area of 80 years fighting for the minorities and women’s causes. Point your finger and wag your finger and tongue at them. They are the ones who have pushed us over the edge now. They are the ones who bear the responsiblity of a Republican being elected to office in November. Go to the source and not to the fall-out. Get your facts straight. Look at the entire situation honestly. Obviously, you are a pro-Obama person otherwise you would sympathize with us. Obama kept making sexist remarks and went unchecked. The DNC forced Obama down the Democratic party’s throat. Gasbags like Kerry and Kennedy made their decision that Obama was their golden child and there was no negotiation. So, put the blame squarely where it belongs. It is not the women. It is on the people who caused this situation to occur. I won’t back down. I have dug my heels in and I am staying in this fight for the duration. Marie, where were you with your pointing finger and wagging tongue when the Clintons were swiftboated by their own party regarding FACTS they stated about what factor race plays in a political race? You should have been pointing your finger and wagging your tongue at that time. Don’t waste our energy or time. We are in this for the long haul. We have 160 clubs nationwide so far and it is growing every single day by leaps and bounds. Put the blame where it belongs on the washington gasbags and on the sexist behavior that occurred.
Thank you,
Mary Anne

Keith is awesome. I watch his show religously. I stand in total support of the man, he has been one of the only honest voices in the media during the Bush years. His viewership numbers only continue to grow–I’d say that shows he is doing something right.
How about growth of viewers for Courics news show? Not so much you say.

Sorry Katie and all you Clintonites, Obama is the person slated to lead the country this time around. Hillary and Bill had their time but that time is gone now. Go ahead and vote for McCain if you like. If he wins you can say goodbye to all those abortions. McCain will likely replace four or more Justices because in 2009 the Supreme Court’s average age will be 69. As it is, there are only two that were appointed by a democrat and those two will be 76 and 69 in 2009. the bottom line is that McCain will set women back to the 1960′s. So go ahead. Men stand to have a great advantage under a McCain presidency because after the Court repeals Choice all those women will be saddled with children without marriage and they will not be a factor in the workforce. GO OBAMA!!!!

It’s disgusting to hear women whining like this….and I say this as a woman. I’ve yet to hear Barack Obama whining away about the fact that he is also a member of a minority and complaining he got unfair treatment.
Why do women put themselves down by just whining about sexism? Where is the self-esteem in this? What happened to acknowledging faults and responsibiilties? The Clintons – both of them – are fundamentally unable to admit their faults or accept responsibiity for their loss. I’ve seen them act like little children.. it’s blame, blame blame….Blame the media. Blame sexism. Blame their fellow politicians for conspiring against them…These people, specially the husband, play the victim card like nobody else.

Maybe Keith Olbermann and all you Hillary-haters have drank the kool-aid. It is blatantly obvious that Clinton was treated unfairly and that Obama was annointed by the press. When it comes to Obama the media and many American Democrats drank the Kool Aid. It is obvious that looking at the fact not the rhetoric she has much more knowledge about the issues and would make a better president. Wake up People.

Isn’t funny when Women make a statement they are seen as whining. Sexist at its best.

One more Clinton vote for McCain. For the Obama people: He had no problem when his supporters attacked Clinton and her family but turns cry baby about his wife(the boss)-She’s off limits. Boo hoo. Prediction: Soon Olbermann will be doing “sports only” shows.

To George Johnson, So you watch Olbermann religiously? What an oxymoron stating relilgiously when talking about Satan himself! lolol Big deal. One sexist watching another big sexist! Who cares? Obama turned this problem into a sexist problem and now we will have the war of the sexes. I thinl ALL women should only go to work and do nothing else at all, just like the men do. If they give you any flack about the Obama situation, stop cooking, stop running the kids all over, stop doing banking errands, etc and see how well they can cope. They’ll find out how far they get! What a joke! Women have to do it all and you you guys is go to work and cut the grass! Bunch of dangling doris’.

To PXB:
So you didn’t see Obama and his wife Michelle in the plane complaining and whining when the press and the debate commentors started giving him more difficult questions and began focusing on him? You have tunnel vision. Wah!, Wah!, Wah! The Democratic party has forced Obama down your throats and now you have to fall in line like little sheep being led to slaughter! You think! NOT!!!!!!! Turn in you membership card to the female gender, we don’t want you!!

It is not just that sexism and unfair media coverage was a big part of this of this primary. It is the result of these nightly shows of horror. We have now had a flawed candidte shoved down our throats who is arrogant, inexperienced and thinks he has been annointed. Remind you of anyone? No we are not whining we are showing our outrage because we love our country and fear that we are getting a pig in a poke. I personaly feel safer with McCain than with Obama. Obama will be run over on every issue because of his inexperience. Having had military experience myself I can assure you that McCain will get us out of Iraq and honorably. Wait until those generals get ahold of Barrack.

Yes, women are being EMOTIONAL when they are passionate about an issue. Men are always being logical. So I guess when Patrick Henry blurted out, “GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH!” he must have been having his monthly cycle and that was why he acted so EMOTIONAL! lolololol Get real! Women are going to do a complete slow down or stop of the skillion jobs they have to do every single day for their families and than let’s see how well their families get along. If we’re respected but have a difference of opinion in a household about the candidates, fine. If we treated disrespectfully with no regards for our feelings and beliefs, than we will completely stop doing everything, except going to work every day. Gee, I guess we’ll be just like men! lolol

Olberman, couln’t even do sports without attacking a mans character, never mind his talent. He should never have been given a show like this, because he loves to hear himself speak, and God forbid that he would get someone who disagrees with him!! I say we make it a point to get him thrown off of the air!!! Write letters and let them know how out of control this man really is.

It was clear from the start who the media wanted. Olberman was the worst followed by that idiot Dan Abrams. MSNBC used to be easier to watch than FOX the unfair and imbalanced but they’ve gotten just as bad. I sure wish we could go back to the days of old journalism when they just reported and didn’t practice character assasination under the guise of news.
