Rendell Cools on Obama-Clinton Ticket

ABC News’ James Gerber reports: While some high-profile supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., began advocating for her to be offered the vice presidency less than a day after Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., became the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, one of Clinton’s most vocal surrogates, shot down this very idea in an interview Wednesday with NY1 News.

Rendell reminded Clinton and her supporters that the choice for vice president belongs solely to Obama. "He has to make the choice, and it’s his choice to make," said Rendell. "You don’t bargain with the Presidential nominee. Even if you’re Hillary Clinton and you have 18 million votes, you don’t bargain."

Last week, Rendell seemed optimistic that Clinton would get the V.P. nod. By Wednesday, the Governor had changed his tune, fearing that Clinton could overshadow Obama.

"The rule for the vice president is make sure you never upstage the president," said Rendell. "It’s rule one. You know, Hillary Clinton in some ways couldn’t help but upstage, even if she was trying not to."

Rendell also thinks that former President Bill Clinton could greatly complicate matters if his wife was the vice presidential nominee. Clinton has made several controversial remarks while
stumping for his wife on the campaign trail, such as comparing Obama’s victory in South Carolina to Jesse Jackson’s win in 1988, then later claiming that the Obama camp had "played the race card" on him. Earlier this week, the former President issued a tirade against the media for its alleged Obama bias.

"The Obama campaign would have to make strict rules, you know, about what President Clinton could and could not do during the campaign," said Rendell.

Hillary could upstage Obama even if she were in a semi-coma. Experience and talent always take center stage.

she would NEVER upstage Obama. She is OUT. If she was that great she would be the nominee today. She was a disgrace to all us women, last night, who thought she had some character.Rendall is looking at the spot himself.

Obama is doomed without her on the ticket. We’ll see if he has any more sense than Pelosi, Dean, et al. I doubt it…

The main problem for HRC is Bill; HRC is a great tough campaigner and a good senator and normally I would say should be on the ticket; but HRC as VP is not workable un-fortunately; HRC & Bill in the white house with Obama; this would be Obama’s worst nightmare; Would hurt Obama effectiveness, Bill looking over his shoulder, the media and public believing it’s really the Clintons running things; “not this Obama guy running things”; there would be conflict just like there’s been conflict so far (HRC & Bill’s way or the highway attitude just like this campaign); NO, NO, NO; only a fool with no vision or common sense would elect to put themselves in this position having HRC VP. No HRC in the white house……If there’s a need for a person to fill her shoe’s without all the baggage the Obama & the DNC need to find him or her quickly; Randell works for me.

Politicians suck! The are all traitors, liars, and deceivers.
My how quick everyone is to switch their support.
Hillary to Denver or Our New Coalition – Independent Party (I wish the Clintons would wake up to the fact that we are ready for a 3rd Party)
Obama is already looking like an idiot making his every other day switchs

Sexism..Sexism…MMmmmmmmmmm Hillary showed us how weak she is by having to take “time to think”…she wouldn’t have that option if she was the president. Just shows us the weak side of herself. That speech was a disgrace to womenhood.

Hillary doesn’t want VP.. Some people like her to be VP for the purpose of uniting Dems…
Obama doesn’t want Hillary as VP either becasue he will look like a kid to her and people will wonder who will be real CIC…
Hillary knows Obama won’t pick her as VP but she offer the options to show Dems she will do whatever it takes to unite Dems…
In the end, Obama will fight by his own in G.E. and he will take all blame when he looses to McCain…

Finally a Clinton supporter with some sense! She cannot be his VP because she would not be willing to take orders from him and run his agenda–period! If she and the rest of her supporters cannot understand that the President has to be in charge, not the Vice-President, then let them stay home or vote for McCain as they have threatened. The rest of the country wants to get on with the business of beating McCain and putting Obama in the White House!

How could any HRC supporter vote for McCain… the man that will bomb Iran, never push for universal health care, opposes womens rights etc.
HRC needs to go back to the Senate.

I think that Obama and Hillary are gonna deal. He does not want her to be VP and she does not want to be 2nd on the ticket in any case.
They will make a deal that he will FAKE offer her the VP position and she will gracefully refuse but then be able to tell her supporters that she just can’t do VP. But since he was now nice enough to ask her she will do all she can to get her supporters to back him. For this he will give her a plum position in his cabinet and help pay down her campaign debt.
That is what I think is gonna happen

I love the way the MSM can’t come to terms with some facts…the first being that the Clintons are not racists. When Bill was talking in SC, only a handful of people heard what he actually said. We heard the edited snippets and the call was made….RACISTS!!!! Even Jesse Jackson said Bill’s statements were true. That’s the kind of “journalism” that has brought us the messiah Obama. Well done!
GO HILLARY!

Hillary has shown her selfishness by not conceding graciously to the Democratic NOMINEE Senator Barack Obama. She always thought of her not the party. Ashamed of Hillary! Governor Rendell could influence on her and ask her to do the right thing: Concede and unite the party or declare your support to McCain. She could not be Senator Barack Obama VP. She lost all her chances. Senator Barack Obama is for Change and HRC represents the Washington establishments.
Proud Latina for Barack Obama President!!!

1. Obama did pass the 2118 mark yesterday.
2. Hillary is not bi partisan she had 12 suporters to 9 on the Rules and Bylaws comittee and still couldn’t get her agenda passed.
3. Hillary will not carry Texas and West Virginia.
4. Hillary admitted that the nomination is decided by delegates
5. Hillary wants the spotlight and will try to steal Obamas
6. Hillary started with over 200 SD backing her before the 1st vote counted.
7. Barack won because he got young people involved, gain the support of the Dem base, energized the black voting pop. and prove he can withstand controversy.
8. Obama won becuase Hillary underestimated him.

Neither Candidate has the votes that were needed to be the nominee for the democrates. The Super Delegates put Obama over the top. The Superdelegates will not decide the candidate that I will vote for. How dare they.
To me, this is a tied contest: One has more delegates(minus the supers) and one has more poular vote.
This should go all the way to the convention. Superdelegates bow out. You should be forced to take back your votes. If there is not a decision in Denver, then you “STUPID POWER HUNGRY” SUpers can vote then….but not until then!

Anyone who thinks Obama is not tough enough should think again. This is an African American first time senator who overcame all obstacles thrown in his path, to clench the nomination from a presumptive nominee even before the primaries started, and wife of one of the most loved politician in America. RNC may be a formidable party but will not outstage BO.

10. Hillary can’t raise money even with a former President for a husband
11. After all the controversy with Obama, Hillary is still less trustworthy then Obama in most swing states.
12. Hillary was the first to go negative. (Mailers in New Hampshire)
13. Hillary spent most of her life working in corporate America, and has 4 years less elected official experience then Obama, and has even less public servant experience then Obama.

Mrs. Clinton is self-obsessed and she has been losing her level-headed supporters, as well as party power supporters, daily as she opens her mouth. When this thing closed last night, Obama had 26.5 superdelegates for the day. Today isn’t even over and he’s up to 51, including Mondale. What does that tell you, Hillary and friends???
If there are 18 million supporters left now, they are bitter, fanatical and will vote for McCain, over the good of their own country anyway, and Obama won’t need them. ;-)

Posted by: Terri | June 4, 2008, 4:31 pm 4:31 pm

I am sick to death of all of the fair weather supporters of Hillary and Bill Clinton. They are all jumping ship like rats. Rendell is probably hoping for the VP slot now. If I were the Clinton’s, I would endorse Obama, and then go quietly back to my day job and let them campaign without me at all. Afterall, if the Clinton’s are such a detriment, they shouldn’t really need them or their 18 million supporters right!

last night that speech she made just once again proved to me she is so selfish its all about her come on hillary supporters try to blame her selfish disrespectful speech on obama dont think so and all the nice and gracious things he said about her on his night that woman has no decency shame or integritry and thats why she LOST

Posted by: angie | June 4, 2008, 4:32 pm 4:32 pm

After some thought, I think Hillary should NOT accept the VP position. I think she needs to let him try to win with someone else. She will upstage him. He is a weak candidate and needs to build up his campaign. He will either bring Hillary supporters on board and win the election, or lose without them. Hillary doesn’t want to be on the losing end anymore.

OTOH, if Hillary runs as an Independent I’m sure that every one of the *thousands* of disgruntled children who are crowding her website will vote for her.
Just imagine…with those *thousands* of supporters she could easily be the least successful third-party candidate in recent history.
There’s a legacy for you!

Steve M
actually one has the most delegates… teh only real metric
one has the most states won,
one has the popular vote in 5 of the 6 ways you count it…
the only time obama loses the popular vote count is if you give hillary all the vote in michigan while giving obama zero votes
zero
you can give him half of the uncommited and he wins that vote…
i seriously doubt no one voted for him in michigan…but whatever
the popular vote isnt a metric at all.
The simple fact of the matter is we have the nominee and everyone is rallying around him
she can take ti to the convention but it would be political suicide

What bagage. Having a controversal pastor, guess what most black pastors are controversal and say controversal things.
Hillary has bagage that reaches the sears tower. With champaign finance problems, voting for Iraq, not reading the Intelligence reports, If anything I pick Obama over anybody who had the information and decided not to read it. Hillary problems are her problems. Obama problems are other people.

Posted by: MM | June 4, 2008, 4:34 pm 4:34 pm

I think this was the most intelligent stuff I have ever heard from him. Not for Obama’s sake, but for Hillary’s and the party’s sakes. If she were to become VP she would be resigning herself to be a good #2, and blocking herself from running in 2012…she would not run against her own party’s incumbent. There are other ways that she can be a true leader in the party and for her supporters. Personally, I always thought of Hillary as Sec of State (if she didn’t win), but the latest suggestions as head of Health and Welfare or supreme court is cool, too.
I know that emotions are still high, but it can’t last forever, and the sooner it ends the better. The candidates and other leaders know it, we need to prepare for the next fight together.

Posted by: MrMajek | June 4, 2008, 4:35 pm 4:35 pm

emily good point. how revealing it is that hillary may be a detriment due to obamas lack of experience. how pathetic is that? i often interview and hire people that are more qualified than me. knowing full well that they can replace me-gives me comfort in knowing that if i am not up to the job the program will continue with or without me. if the hiring criteria for the second most important job in the world is be quiet, don’t upstage, i am master. then perhaps a lap dog would be best.

yea some more straight talk!!!
During his press conference today in Baton Rouge, John McCain declared in strong terms that he’s voted for every investigation of Hurricane Katrina.
The only problem, as the DNC has been pointing out to reporters, is he voted twice against Democratic proposals to investigate the levee failures.
After a local reporter at his Baton Rouge press conference asked why he voted against forming a commission to investigate the levee failures in New Orleans, McCain insisted that he supported every investigation — and added that he was “not familiar” with what the reporter was talking about:

So with every last primary and caucus now over and done with, here are the final stats for the delegates and popular votes:
• Barack Obama has passed the 2,118-vote finish line and now has 2,158 votes, against 1,926 for Clinton. The remaining 144 super-delegates are likely to go almost entirely to Obama.
• Obama leads in the pledged-delegate count by 1,763 to Clinton’s 1,640 — a difference of 52%-48%, showing just how close this race was over the whole cycle.
• In the super-delegate count, Obama now leads by 395 votes to Clinton’s 286 votes, a long journey from the start of the race when Hillary dominated in this category. This number is also likely to change very rapidly, as more and more supers come out for Obama as the presumptive nominee.
• For the popular vote — a statistic that the Hillary camp has been boasting they won — it all depends on how you count it. According to RealClearPolitics, Obama leads by 151,844 in a count that excludes Michigan and factors in estimates from caucuses that did not directly report popular vote totals. Including Michigan and crediting Obama all of the “Uncommitted” voters against Clinton, Obama still leads by 61,703 votes. In order for Hillary to lead, Michigan has to be added in without crediting Obama those votes.
All in all, it’s been an amazing primary season. One candidate started out as the seemingly-unstoppable frontrunner, while another was able to come out of practically nowhere and pull off a narrow victory. The next step: Cleaning up the mess and getting on to the general election.

Hillary Clinton is STUNNING!!!
You have just witnessed the greatest political campaign fight in American history. One for the textbooks, and the history books. Hillary Clinton fought her heart out against all odds to win for all of the American people . While at the same time doing her best to prepare Sen. Barack Obama to win in November if he was the nominee. STUNNING!!! WELL DONE HILLARY CLINTON. WELL DONE! Your AMAZING! :-)
Sen. Obama could not have had a better opponent than Hillary Clinton. Nor could he have had a better opponent to prepare him for the battle royal to come against John McCain and the Republicans ahead of the November elections. Hillary Clinton was like a big Mama cat determined to teach her kitten how to hunt, and hang with the big dogs for the fights ahead.
And how about Bill Clinton, Chelsea, and th whole Clinton team. They were magnificent. They really showed their metal. BRAVO! TEAM CLINTON… BRAVO!
And how about YOU! my fellow Americans. I’m so proud of you. And proud to be one of you. You showed what you are made of. And what makes America so great. You never gave up on your Champion Hillary Clinton. Time, and time again you eagerly waited your turn to vote for Hillary Clinton. To pick her up and pass her along down the line to the rest of your fellow Americans.
You never gave up on her. Just as Hillary Clinton never gave up on you. No matter how many times they counted her out. No matter how many times they brutally knocked her down. You knew she would get back up. And you were ready to support her when she did. AMERICA LOVES A FIGHTER. AMERICA UNDERSTANDS A FIGHTER. AMERICA IS A FIGHTER. I’M PROUD OF YOU AMERICA!
Hillary said she would accept the VP spot on the ticket if ask. And I am thrilled to hear that. I think it would be crazy not to take her up on that offer. You could not have a better VP than Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is Sen. Obama’s best chance of winning the Whitehouse in November. And it is essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse.
The American people are in a very desperate condition now. George Bush has wrecked America, and much of the world.
YOU MADE US VERY PROUD HILLARY CLINTON! :-)
WE LOVE YOU…
jacksmith… Working Class :-)
p.s. I really liked Sen. Barack Obama’s speech in Minnesota. I think he just maybe ready now for the Bush Republican attack machine, dirty tricks, and vote fraud machine. :-)

Obama supporters should try to keep in mind 2000 & 2004.
Both of those years the Dems were 100%UNITED against Bush.
We lost BOTH years.
The Dems are now gouged down the middle with deep and bloody wounds.
Half the electorate voted for Hillary and a lot of the people who voted for Obama did so in the earlier races before he was vetted and will not be voting for him in the general election.
A lot of Hillary supporters will go over to Obama. A lot more will not.
A lot of people in America see Obama as too much too the left. A lot of people in America consider McCain moderate.
Obama supporters think they don’t need Hillary’s supporters.
Good luck with that.
I’m laying money that the man taking the oath in January won’t have a wife named Michelle.

Great entry, jacksmith. Positive message. Pete, the price of gas is scary-high. And it seems like it will keep rising, so it’s time to adapt our consumption habits as much as possible. Obviously, some people must drive their cars, etc, but i also think that we can go a long way towards optimizing our consumption and minimizing demand. This can go a long way towards reducing our need for petroleum. It can happen!

Hillary would “upstage” Obama, because of her antics and nonsense with her and her husband. The media would be wasting time focusing on their dysfunction. For those you say that he can’t win without her on the ticket, nonsense, he can’t with WITH her on the ticket. Hillary is kryptonite. Basically everyone in the country, except for those that voted for he in this primary, hate the woman. It seems that her supporters don’t realize that….

Obama would be pretty stupid and arrogant if he didn’t pick her as VP. He just barely won the nomination. If we practiced the less complicated system used by the Republicans, Hillary would have been the nominee.
Over half of your party voted against you, Obama. If you think you can find enough new YOUNG VOTERS to fill that void and overcome McCain, GO AHEAD!!!!. We’ll sit back and watch. I know there are millions like me. 18 million strong!!!! Hillary, we are with you!!!!!!

Obama is going to lose so badly to McCain. Hillary should be no where near it. They will just blame her.

the Barack / Hillary ticket, on the surface, (and my apologies for sounding ignorant) seems like an effective weapon in the upcoming election. Hillary seems like an energetic campaigner and would no doubt try her best to help Barack if they made it to the White House. Bill Clinton is a free-spirit, and i respect how he’s defended his wife. I’d like some other opinions so i can formulate an educated notion about this. Let’s weigh advantages vs. disadvantages.

Yes, I’m beginning to think that Hillary is better off nowhere near the Obama ticket.
That way she cannot be blamed (rightfully, however, they will blame her anyway, because nothing is ever HIS fault) for the disaster to come in November, and she can have a fresh start next time around, hopefully with new leaders in the Democratic Party.

I am a Hillary supporter.
I will vote for Obama in GE.
It’s that simple. I am grieving her loss as are many other, but there are more important things at stake here.
McCain is not an option for me.

Yes Sara. Great attitude!

Sorry, Ed is right, you cannot bargain with the nominee. No Obama supporters want Hillary as VP. If Obama wants it, it is his decision, and one that he will live with. She definitely would insure his victory, but at what cost? Eight years of Bill and HIll is more than anyone can take. They couldn’t even take each other when they were in the White House! Obama would insist that the Clintons be fully vetted before taking her as VP, he will need the list of all donors to the Clinton Library, his major donors, lists of paid speaking engagements, business deals and partners over the last seven years, pending indictments, etc. The Clintons would never divulge this info to Obama, and therefore Obama can refuse to make her VP- since she wouldn’t comply with his required vetting process. McCain will insist on the same from his VP candidates.

Allow HRC and her supporters to go through the grieving process,as they are all in the denial or anger stages now. An understanding of their grief following such a major loss explains how irrational their current judgment, statements and actions are. I am certain that when HRC’s folks come to their senses and enter the bargaining stage of the grief process that we can all count on the graciousness and wisdom of our Future President Obama. Let’s send our loving light to those who supported HRC, that they will heal in Godspeed, not remain stuck in their grief, and not continue to think and act from such a unhealthy place.

Finally he said somrthing that mkes sense.
Millions know that his message of change would be flushed down the toilet with her as VEEP.
Hillary needs to Endorse and end her Campaign and save the Party and the Winning of the white House.
Waiting until Sat???? Please she should have done it the night he got the Delegates..She was hurting the Party by not, and in the process shot herself in her Political Career. People never forget wrongs..
Governor Rendell I hope you will be out there stumping for Barrack with all Hillary supporters and trying to change their minds on voting for John McCain.
Party must always come first.
By the way is he looking for the Veep Job?

There are less than 6 months left before the election!! I say let’s deal with Hillary and Bill later. I’m dying to know the laundry in McCain’s suitcase. Can we please get the party started already??

GOOD ADVise by Governor Rendell! It’s refreshing to see that some Clinton supporters are seeing the full picture…….
“Rendell reminded Clinton and her supporters that the choice for vice president belongs solely to Obama. “He has to make the choice, and it’s his choice to make,” said Rendell. “You don’t bargain with the Presidential nominee. Even if you’re Hillary Clinton and you have 18 million votes, you don’t bargain.” THIS IS TRUE~
I personally feel that Clinton supporters as well as the media has over played the idea that Senator Obama somehow cannot win the presidential race without the mighty Clinton machine. Actually I feel that she would surely be more of a liability than an asset.
It is clearly time for Senator Clinton to step aside and allow Senator Obama, his lovely wife Michelle, the hard working campaign staff and the millions of loyal Obama supporters to celebrate this important historical event. I and many of my close associates highly resent the grace-less, narssicism displayed by Senator Hillary Clinton & her staff by attempting to over shadow the greatness of Tuesday night’s event.
THIS was and is clearly Senator Obama’s moment to shine. SHame, shame on Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Senator Obama has proven himself to be the better of the two. He is a highly qualifed candidate as well as an eloquent, patient and articulate winner~
SINCERE Congratulatons and Best of Luck to Senator Obama-

Enlightened self interest.
Nevertheless, Rendell would be a terrific candidate.

NEWVOTER – did you read your comment before you posted it? It’s obvious you are new voter: Hillary Clinton would need time to think about her future if she was president. And to everyone else who doesn’t understand why she wanted time to think, try to put yourselves in her position: she has to adjust to the fact that she is not going to be the party’s nominee. She hasn’t had a chance to until now because getting to the end of the primary season naturally takes all a candidate’s resolve. Just ask Obama, if you don’t have the imagination yourselves. And dropping out would have been a setback for her, her supporters and to the prospects of any future female candidacy – not to mention not politically viable (for those of you who apparently don’t understand politics).
GRANNIE etc – what on earth are you’re talking about? There was nothing disgraceful about her speech, unless you are Maureen Dowd (who’s gone a bit doolallie, don’t you think?). What’s disgraceful is the viscious, vindictive, over-sensitive and insensitive (yes both) attitudes of people like you.

PROUD LATINA, I think you are judging Hillary unfairly. I think that what we are seeing is a gradual adjustment, not an ungracious one. This is a difficult situation for the Democrats. Do you think that a sudden, uncharacteristic concession of the sort you demand would be interpreted favorably by the public or the media? It would be like Obama suddenly offering the VP slot. Patience, respect and due consideration is what will unite the Democrats, not rashly rushing and pushing and criticizing and complaining.
And for goodness sake, LAUREN, Saturday is perfectly reasonable. You can’t wind down a campaign in a day. Things aren’t as simple as you see them.
I think you are all letting your uncontrolled feelings get the better of your reason.

Rendell does not want to be VP. Was asked yesterday that if he were offered VP would he accept. Answer? “Well, I’m not really good as a Number Two. I’ve been my own boss for 30-some years and I’d like to keep it that way.”

Did you see this headline? “DNC plan: Portray Obama as all-American.” After all this time they still have to fake his image. That’s funny. Regardless, It’ll be a cold day in hell when he can tell the Clintons or anyone else what they can or cannot do. I would never vote for him in a million years.
Hill Yeah! Take it Back!
