Some Muslim Americans Wonder If Obama’s Inclusiveness Is “Just Words”

A provocative story in today’s New York Times takes a look at some Muslim Americans who are disappointed that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, whose father was born a Muslim, hasn’t done much to reach out to American Muslims. The campaign is clearly sensitive to the false rumor that he’s a Muslim, but has its sensitivity turned into insensitivity? Obama has yet to visit a mosque, and of course last week two Muslim women wearing hijabs were asked to not appear in the background behind Obama at a Michigan rally. (Obama apologized to the two women and his campaign said the request was apparently the result of a rogue volunteer or two.) “The community feels betrayed,” Safiya Ghori, the government relations director in the Washington office of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, tells the NYT. “A lot of us are waiting for him to say that there’s nothing wrong with being a Muslim, by the way,” says Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., the first Muslim elected to Congress, who was asked by the campaign not to campaign for Obama in Iowa and North Carolina because, an Obama aide explained, the campaign has "a very tightly wrapped message." Obama being accused of being a Muslim constitutes a conundrum for a self-described inclusive politician — not unlike a liberal politician being accused of being gay. Theoretically, those who embrace diversity and tolerance say there’s nothing wrong with homosexuality, and yet when one is falsely accused of being gay, or being Muslim, it’s usually by someone who is trying to feed into prejudices.  But if you push back too hard you can seem as though you think there’s something wrong with being gay. Or being Muslim. Or being anything, really. (You might recall September 2006 when a reporter asked then-Sen.. George Allen, R-Vir., about a report in The Forward newspaper that he had Jewish roots, and Allen acted as if he’d just been accused of having herpes.) There’s an electoral aspect to this as well. There are small but significant Muslim populations in swing states such as Minnesota, Michigan, and Virginia. As the Times reports today, in Allen’s re-election race, the Virginia Muslim Political Action Committee targeted an estimated 60,000 Muslim voters in the Commonwealth, and arranged for 53 Muslim cabdrivers to help get these voters to the polls. VMPAC says 86 percent of Virginia’s Muslim voters turned and most went for Jim Webb, giving Democrats their narrow majority in the U.S. Senate. Webb won by 9,000 votes. (And not incidentally, there went George Allen’s presidential hopes for 2008.) – jpt

i to believe – obama will do anything that needs to be done, throw friends under teh bus, flip flop, etc…. to win teh white house and then his true colors will come out- i feel he is extremly calculating – the 130 present voted – doing nothing in the senate and i can go on and on… unfortunately – its McCain ’08

of course it is “Just Words” that is all you really have from obama.
Obama can say nothing better than anyone i have ever heard.
I know many muslims, i have muslim friends, i am african american, and i don’t see anything wrong with being muslim, it is a beautiful religion,
obama if he dosen’t alread know, could lean a lot about unity from, the messenger Muhammad,
if obama were really a unifier, and a new kind of politican, HE should have been able to share with and show the american voters the difference between the 10mil+ good muslims born and living here in american, and the fools who flew the planes on 911.
it matter not what the obama supporters think-it seems to me they are not paying attention, or caring about holding their candidate accountable, and making him worthy of their support.
everyday obama will say something that shows, he is just another politician-just like all the rest.
Heaven help us, with which ever one of these candidates that gets into office.
mccain-and the rep. are scary.
obama-has a speech.
the one thing that might help mccain is if the rep. party had ANY right minded statesmen in their party, THEY would call for and a insist on hearings to start the impeachment of geo. bush and his crew. if mccain really wanted to distance himself from bush, this would be the way to do it.
someone needs to be held accountable for this war and the lives lost.
if the reps. will not hold bush accountable…then the reps should be
and for me this will be the reason they will lose in nov.
not because obama is the better candidate (he is not, he is dumb-and we the american people are going to suffer for the mistake)
advice to mccain if he wants to win-start the ball rolling on impeachment of bush.

So yeah. Everyone knows the ifs, whats, and whys of this entire situation. So lets not pretend we don’t.
Considering the choices before them, I think the Muslim community, like the Black community knows what Senator Obama stands for. And the also know how those stands can be manipulated by the McCain campaign to terify many Americans who have been fed a steady diet of fear for the past 7 1/2 years.
An Obama Presidency will lift ALL Americans up – but he has to be elected first. Simple as that.

Barack got the name from his parents when he was born as all of us did.
He can count how many times he saw his biological father.
He was raised by his grandparents on his mother’s side and they were Christian.
It seems some need a long explanation in order to get the reality!

I have come to believe that Obama really doesn’t give a damn about anyone other than himself. He is ruthlessly self-interested.
The willingness of devotees to submit to him without any kind of questioning is positively frightening.

“Sokadija….will McCain not do the same?”
No. Any policy shifts on McCain have been to the benefit of the American people. Policy shifts on Obama’s part have been done to benefit Obama.
Obama’s abandoned more people and positions than anyone can count.
It’s been said that his true colors will come out only after he’s elected. I don’t know that he has any true colors. He has shown no loyalty to anything other than the Obama.
Why would you guys vote for someone who is deathly afraid to debate McCain without a script?

Posted by: drjohn | June 24, 2008, 10:33 am 10:33 am

what foolishness,
if you think back obama has not shown he can lift anyone up.
all i have seen since obama came on the national scene-is groups that were barely hanging on, or even falsly pieced together-torn apart by obama, because he has talked out of all sides of his mouth, and mispoke at that.
so yeah, if you mean obama will lift all american up, because for him to get to be president he has torn this country up, there will be nothing else to do except try to put it back together again.
i could go into the list of how obama just with his words out of his mouth have torn people apart, but you all know them also, you might be in denial of the affect, but you know.
if obama could not start to unify the people of this country with his campaigning-he certainly will not be able to do it as president.

Here in Dearborn MI we have one of the largest Muslim populations in the US. I can tell you they understand. Muslim has become a dirty word in the election. Obama needs to come out and say “So what!” Muslim is no different that being Catholic or Jewish or Baptist.
We are discounting a whole group of Americans just because they are Muslim. We did this to Jews early in the last century. For whatever reason it was OK to hate Jews. No we are doing it to Muslims. It’s just so sad. Americans can be so hateful.

What is a psychopath? By definition it is someone that is characterized by lack of conscience, or has manipulative behaviors, and a personality disorder. The ego is exaggerated and a “sense of individual existence” surfaces. One’s morals or moral principles are restricted from surfacing to protect the self image. When Obama flip-flops on issues he doesn’t ever acknowledge that he has either changed positions, or that he made any statements to the contrary. He does it with highest opinion of himself always stating that he got it right —“no, no I’ve never said that” comes to mind regarding bringing the troops home from Iraq and so forth. Or I’ve opt out of the federal funding system because it is a “broken system”. Sounds good, but the system was a “broken system” when he told his followers a few months earlier that he would accept. He made a pledge. What are his exact stance on say Israel, oil, on NAFTA, on the Iraq war (now that it appears the surge has made a difference and finally this long war is coming to an end, how will Mr. Obama who stated to the world that HE WAS THE ONLY person that said the war could never be won—how will he turn that to his favor?), where does he stand on Iran, immigration, special interests groups, and drugs? He has been all over the board with these issues. Yet, Mr. Obama states he “has been consistent on the issues”. Make a list of what he is consistent on and watch over the next month and then you will completely understand why I wrote this message.

I work with a few Muslims here in Detroit and they all know that as long as there is a “whisper campaign” against Obama that he is a radical Muslim, then they will have to stay in the shadows and in the background. To try and push themselves front and center would be counter-productive. Did the Catholics insist on being coddled by Kennedy when he ran for president? No, and he WAS a Catholic. Obama is a Christian yet some Muslims want him to visit a mosque. He has already talked to Jews and is reaching out to Evangelicals so the Druids, Atheists, Muslims, you-name-it’s have to get in line and wait their turn.

What is more embarrassing is to support a wacko like Obama…… a liar….a typical politician.
A guy so full of himself…..and for a second you think this fool is thinking of you ?
All who believed in him— for 20 years—like his church and Pastor….will come to see the real light….and see Obama for what he is….just a plain ol’ lying politician…

Judging from the Obama campaign’s admitted reluctance to even allow well dressed Muslim women (in headscarves) to stand behind their candidate in the television/camera frame at a campaign event last week, the chances of Obama visiting a mosque before the general election are between slim and none.

Obama is nothing more than a good orator. Even then he has to read from the teleprompter. However, you have to give him credit for pulling the wool over his supporters’ eyes so much so that they are completely blind to his flaws.

Obama is a christian. i do believe that there is nothing wrong with being a muslim, catholic, methodist, lutheran, evangelical, orthodox, presbyterian, etc.
As long as you live the words of God. Try to be that person he expects of you. Do not hate, do not judge people. It is not our right to make judgement against another, God did not give us this right. It is his.

Has McCain said it’s okay to be a Muslim? Why is the pressure on Obama here? If he did visit a mosque, the press and the Obama-haters would have a photo op field day. Has McCain visited a mosque?

Obama is a politician. Nothing more. He will do whatever it takes to get elected throwing whatever principles and associates he has to under the bus. This is not cynical. It is reality and if you don’t care and he suits your interests, than vote for him but don’t fool yourself into thinking he is all about hope, unity and the ‘good of the country’. Obama is a politician; he is about himself and his own gain.

Why can’t Obama just say that my middle name is Hussein, a middle name given to me by my father, who is a Muslim and proud of its faith and heritage. I respect my father and therefore, I respect him as a Muslim, even though I am a Chistian with a Muslim middle name. Why? Because of votes.
Each time Obama is faced with choice between courage to stand up for what is right and fear of its consequences, he always choose fear.

Obama’s critics have complained about his naivety, his inexperienced, his ambiguous policies, his attitude towards appeasing terror sponsors, his association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, his 130 ‘present’ votes in the Illinois State Senate… and the list goes on. None of his critics has mentioned the fact that Obama is black. Yet, his liberal supporters accuse his critics of racism. I guess they are playing the race card. Just like they did with Hillary.

Has McCain been to a mosque? Why aren’t you reporting on that?

Posted by: bensci | June 24, 2008, 11:49 am 11:49 am

Jake, in some of those swing states, perhaps Obama just needs to turn up the African-American vote to make up for the loss Muslim votes that you think he won’t get.
It may be better for Obama to make sure people don’t think he is a Muslim and just turn up the African-American vote.

It doesn’t give me hope that Obama will have anything to offer in respect of solving the problems of the Middle East if he snubs the Muslim Community in the way that he is doing. If he hopes to sit down with the Jewish and Muslim communities in diplomatic negotiations in the Middle East then he should start sitting down with them together at home.
Trouble is, he is just not up to it. He neither has the moral fibre nor the intellectual ability to handle the sensitivities of the issues. All he is capable of doing is falling bakc on the same old political expediency.

McCain did not get MILLIONS of Campaign money from Muslims….Obama DID.
Obama should go to a Mosque and thank them personally…..
But then—Representative Keith Ellison, the country’s first Muslim congressman is not too happy with the way the Obama Camp has treated him as well……

I guess I missed the report that said Obama received millions of dollars in contributions from Muslims? Or is that just one of those rumors that keep spinning? Obama has himself spoken eloquently about equality among all of us regardless of race, sex and religion. His actual words, not what bloggers say or rumors. He hasn’t come out and specifically said it’s okay to be Mormon, a Methodist or a Buddhist either, but if you listen to his words, the message that we are all equal describes his views on any religious preference.

Stephan is 100% accurate. I am a McCain supporter. I do not relate to most of anything Obama says and I do not trust him due to the flip-flops becomming routine to him – but each has to make thier own choice. The political parties are slinging enough mud for all – we should rise above that. Most of America is not far right or far left so I am amazed at Obama’s sudden swing to the middle – I cannot see how he can pull that off with credibilty but I am amazed he has come so far on just generalized words and tons of promises, many of which he simply cannot keep and he must know that.
So hard to respect a person who is so blatently making promises he knows he will not keep.
