The Note: Barack Obama is up in the polls but he will need Hillary Clinton supporters in order to defeat John McCain.

ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports in Monday’s Note: Forget the transition team — that was so 2007 — think he’s hiring for the reelect yet? (We’re not sure “yes, we can” works anymore — what about “yeah, we did”?

Somewhere between the new seal, a new Latin phrase, the shattered public financing pledge,
and the not-happening town-hall forums, Sen. Barack Obama made clear that he’s really, really sure he’s going to win.

Nothing wrong with a little confidence — Democrats like to be optimistic these days — and the latest polls  give him enough of an edge  to quell concerns going into a week that will be defined by a big meeting.

But confidence is a tricky game for Obama, D-Ill., who is still busy defining himself to a skeptical public — to say nothing of still-seething Clinton supporters  (and an increasingly frustrated press corps).

In his rush to take advantages where they present themselves, Obama just may have eroded his central message — as reformer, as change agent, as different-kind-of-politician. The question now is whether Sen. John McCain can do anything about it (and remember that he aims for those same qualities).

As things stand, there will be no public financing, and there will be no freewheeling town-hall forums. There’s one candidate who’s the main reason for both of those facts.

Read the rest of The Note — and get all the latest on the 2008 election, Congress, the White House and the wide world of politics every day — from Rick Klein by bookmarking this link.

“By refusing to join McCain in these initiatives in order to protect his own interests, Obama raises an important question: Has he built sufficient trust so that his motives will be accepted by the voters who are only now starting to figure out what makes him tick?” David Broder writes in his Sunday Washington Post column.

Suggestions to the contrary notwithstanding, Obama did not plop upon us fully formed and ready to take his country into flight.

“For all his talk about change, Obama remains a product of a Chicago and Illinois political culture renowned for corruption and filled with characters who range from felonious to just outrageous,” Bob Secter and John McCormick write in the Chicago Tribune. “Whether any of that will matter in November is an open question, but Obama clearly is betting he can benefit from Chicago’s reputation for toughness without being tainted by its darker political side.”

That’s one way to cast his decision to jettison his commitment to public financing (though Republicans can think of a few other ways). “Perhaps people didn’t know how tough he is. He’s been saying all along, don’t confuse hope with naivete,” Obama friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett tells The Washington Post’s Dan Balz and Anne E. Kornblut.

Write Balz and Kornblut: “If some Republicans rue the swift and calculated nature they say characterizes Obama’s early steps, his campaign advisers say they have needed to move quickly to make up for the months spent waging the extended primary race. They cast the decision on public financing, for example, as motivated partly by timing, with just four full months left until Election Day to provide voters with the vision of Obama they hope to establish.”

aol.com straw poll shows McCain 60% to Obama 40% with 118,000 votes cast. McCain is winning every state by Wash DC. Last weeks poll had McCain 56% to Obama 44%. So it all depends which poll you want to look at.

the issue is his going back on his position not to. He can’t afford to keep changing his position on everything he said in the primaries.

Posted by: mich mike | June 23, 2008, 8:58 am 8:58 am

AOL’s “straw poll” isn’t really a poll. It is a place for people to go voluntarily to state their preference. Citing it only demonstrates total ignorance of scientific polling.
Of course if the overwhelming numbers of Obama supporters on the internet ever decide they care what this “straw poll” says it will tilt enormously to Obama.

Posted by: Sam | June 23, 2008, 9:15 am 9:15 am

Two things:
That Obama “seal” is pathetic.
I am a democratic and voted for Clinton in the primary–Myself, my family and friends will not be voting Obama.
Guy “changes” his mind and flip flops more than we can count, not the kind of “changes” we had in mind.
If I were Clinton, I would not campaign for him after the way she, President Clinton; and her campaign were treated. No sour grapes here–just an eye-opener that Obama is not what he claims to be.
I am glad President Clinton did not endorse Obama.

a poll is a poll… I just think it is interesting that 118,000 people stated their preference so far this week. I think the dems should take a look at it instead of the polls they pay for. It just looks like the public is trying to send a message. Or perhaps you are right and the dems should go and tilt the poll their way. Last week over 400,000 people cast their preference. I also find it strange that Obama is only winning in Washington DC and losing in the other 49 states.

Posted by: mich mike | June 23, 2008, 9:25 am 9:25 am

If Obama continues to change his position on every issue as he has been doing he may find the superdelegates changing their mind also. Hillary isn’t out of the picture yet. He needs her if he expects to win.

Let me count the ways….new insulting seal, flipped on public financing, will not do town hall meetings, hired people to make over his wife and most importantly….he plays and plays the race card! I could go on but I think you get the point. I am a Hillary supporter, I will not be bought by his millions and I have a brain of my own. I do not care what color your skin is, I care for integrity and experience. This is why I will vote for McCain as well as other supporters of Hillary!

What’s the difference between that and calling people to state their preference. Neither are worth a squat anyway.

The Presidential Seal was taking it over the edge. He finally made the Office of President a mockery.
He has Proven His only concern or care is himself.
He does not care for the people, the country or anything but himeself.
A Jr Senator from Illinois Should know right from wrong. The laws of the land.
That his boss is George Bush. That the Office of the President should be respected. Whether he agrees with him or not.
Obama has shown disrespect for This country, the President and the Office of the President, and What it stands for.
To Obama the office of President is something to be attacked, Condemned, made fun of and used and abused. He has shown that by his words, actions and deeds. Lack of respect, and constant smear attacks on the President.
He has gone beyond freedom on speech. He has gone to almost treasonous levels and has led people to do that same.
Those following Obama are doing the same.

lol
mccain flip flopped on public finance more then once….
at least obama didnt break any laws when opting out of public finance
lol
obama is funded by small donations, so i guess this isnt public finance?
Instead of getting a full 84 million, he says he will risk it by just asking for small donations
lol how is that worse then just taking tax money from us?

this is about
having a candidate who didn’t tell us this Iraq war was going to be “long and hardfought” and we should STILL go…just like McCain is now starting to pitch for Iran (same speech different day…different country now)
It is about getting rid of the policies that have almost destroyed us…and yes…Mccain’s policies are almost exactly the same.
It is about looking where we are and who gets out allies to help us again…not McCain by a long shot.
It’s about every issue all of which mccain is now on the wrong side of…standing 95% of the time with Bush…that is not spin…spin is when people try to say that isn’t true… go look at the FACTS.

Posted by: dl | June 23, 2008, 9:45 am 9:45 am

dl,
At least with McCain you KNOW where he stands. I personally don’t care for either of them.

J
Obama doesn’t need the 10% of Hillary supporters that are all up in arms…he does need the overwhelming majority of them…
guess what he has them…
he just doesn’t have the ones that are not voting on issues and who have created an importance of her election as the biggest issue…
that isn’t 98% of the Hillary supporters… most Hillary supporters care about their country and have logic based in the direction of our country…not one individual.
so no we don’t need voters who think that this election is about one person’s election but about policies.

I have yet to see anything that Barack Obama offers Hillary’s supporters, after enduring a barrage of insults for six straight months. Good luck with that.

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | June 23, 2008, 9:55 am 9:55 am

yeah
Mccain you know
he is against equal pay for women
he wants to overturn roe and get the supreme court moving to the right
he wants to make speeches about the threat of Iran that are exactly (like the one he gave to AIPAC_ almost word for the word the same that he himself said before we went to Iraq.
We know that he promises he will not focus on Afghanistan but Iraq.
We know that he doesn’t think lower income vets unlike his wealthy background and safety net…should not get an offer of education like he had after one tour of war.
We know that he wants to ignore that their is OIL in the area that the OIL companies already have that they have not explored or drilled…and wants the oil companies to have a federal carte blanche to lobby state officials to be allowed to drill off their coasts…because he needs the backing of Bush’s oil backers…including the two men running his campaign who lobbied for those oil companies.
We know that he is against assistance for children’s healthcare.
we know that he is against the fefderal government taking an active role to fix all healthcare and the mortgage crisis.
we know that he stands with Geirge Bush 96% of the time…the same stances that we have had for 8 years.
How the last 8 years been for ya?

Posted by: dl | June 23, 2008, 9:56 am 9:56 am

I don’t have a problem with the issues I just have a problem trying to figure out where Obama is on them. He flip flops on the every day depending on who he is standing in front of. The man has no integrity. he is a Chicago politician…

How come ABC isn’t talking about the campaign finance laws that McCain is breaking right now? He’s even broken a law he WROTE. Does McCain/ Feingold ring any bells with you media types? I realize it’s all so very nuanced and gosh darn complicated, but if I, a lowly voter, can figure it out, how come you can’t?

Posted by: mojopo | June 23, 2008, 10:01 am 10:01 am

I’m confused.
Obama has flip-flopped on Public Financing. Big Deal (sarcasm)
McCain has flip-flopped on the Bush tax-cuts, Iraqi War, Drilling, Roe vs. Wade etc
McCain has flip-floped on EVERY major issue.
So when I hear/see Clinton & McCain supporters labeling Obama has a Flip-Flopper, I wonder if they’ve seen or heard their candidate John McCain policies from the past to the future.
What’s also confusing is Clinton supporter claiming Obama usage of the race card. Obama has never used the race card. The MEDIA has. The MEDIA fueled Bill Clinton South Carolina remarks. The MEDIA fueled Geraldine Ferraro comments. The MEDIA fueled the Rev.Wright controversy.
Obama has never fueled the fire over a Clinton controversy b/c he knew if this primary season came down to race baiting…Clinton would have won.
I can’t say the same for Clinton.

Mccain and Bush are even the same background…
they run for President as a legacy for their wealthy millionaire old pol fathers.
Their stances are out of touch.
do you all realize that the ratio of wealthiest Americans tax moneys has gone up half of what the middle class has in the past few decades …most heavily since the republicans had originally taken over congress… and most likely the biggest curve in the past 8…(go look at 2005 one of the biggest differential changes in equity between wealthy tax breaks and the middle and lower classes…)
the IRS themselves say that they are 99% accurate on personal income taxes but only 70% accurate on corporate and investment taxes… who receives those 30% “miss”… 90% …the wealthy)
We are carrying the inaccuracies and weight of wealthy tax cuts…gamed by accountants and lawyers that the rest of America can’t afford.

Obama needs Hillary like he needs a 2 ton albatross. She gave it all she had and she lost. To many voters she was not honest enough to be the nominee. Is she going to suddenly turn honest now?? He needs to select someone with a lot more wisdom, compassion and integrity than she exhibited. I trust he will make a wise choice.
His seal is so corny, I hope he gets rid of it!!

Posted by: Adnora | June 23, 2008, 10:07 am 10:07 am

what has Obama offered Hillary voters…
how about agreeing with them and disagreeing with McCain on almost every single issue.
equal pay for women
roe
the war
healthcare
supreme court appointments
oil companies
global warming
children’s healthcare
education
taxes
the list is long…where oBama has fought for and promised the same as Hillary supporters and the differences in promises and values of McCain are enormous…
maybe that is what Obama “offers” Hillary supporters.

How is McCain going to pay…he has not said how he is going to pay for his budget factually.
why did he dis economists…because they are overwhelmingly saying his plan does not work,,,I should say his “plans” do not work.
So typical republican tactic…dis the smart people.
and go look at how much Mccain has said one thing and is now promising another on sooo many issues.
You don’t trust obama because of so-called”flip-flops”
but you have McCain…who has overwhelmingly flip-flopped on half of his values in the past 2 years.
This is an argument for someone who is not voting on America’s future but their own pre-set anger…and jade.
Clear eyes are needed this time…not voting like we did in 2000 and 2004.
This election has to be about issues.

Propaganda isn’t based in fact…after each presidential primary their is a similar amount of voters who say they won’t vote for the other candidate of the party and will vote for the other party.
It never comes to pass. The eventual numbers always shrink to not have any effect.
Especially in a unique year like this one where the differences (and past 8 year experiment with one side’s stand on the issues failing miserably)…is so strong.

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year-old Texas rancher, whose hand
was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a
conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and
his bid to be President.
The old rancher said, ‘Well, ya know, Obama is a ‘post turtle’.’
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a ‘post turtle’
was. The old rancher said, ‘When you’re driving down a country road and you
come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a ‘post
turtle’.’
The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor’s face, so he continued to
explain. ‘You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up
there, he doesn’t know what to do while he is up there, and you just wonder
what kind of a person put him up there to begin with.’

If Obama stated “you’re likable enough” to Bill Clinton would you still consider him sexist?
That’s not a sexist remark.
I agree the claw comments went a bit too far.
“Sweetie” is not a sexist remark. I’m sure Obama calls his wife, kids, and other associates “sweetie”, is he sexist towards them?
“I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she’s feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal.”
Not sexist at all. He could’ve said this statement to a male. If Sen.Clinton wanted to be treated or portrayed as a pity female she should not have ran for president. She was treated the same as Obama, Edwards Biden etc
Point proven you can’t name a time Obama has used the race card personally. It’s always been the media.

Obama is not a new kind of candidate. He has been packaged by all of the old status quo northeastern liberals he surrounds himself with. Certainly, he has raised a ton of money, has been given free media push by at least two major networks, and been promoted by many of the superdelegates of the Party who have convinced themselves that he is what they and the country are looking for.
It still is a matter of trust. For someone who played the race card to ignite the black vote and calling anyone who questioned or criticized him a racist, the people simply do not trust him or think he is knowledgeable enough to be President. He is green, he is a double-talker and a backpedaler. That has not changed. The latest flaps about a pseudo Presidential Seal, breaking his promise for public financing, and his refusal to hold town hall forums with McCain reveal just who he is. How can he dump these issues as he did Wright, his church, and his shady associates? He can’t. He is the sum of all his parts. He is who he is.

If Senator Obama wants the Hillary Clinton supporters on board, he needs to start every speech with an apology for his supporters who made vile, nasty and sexist remarks about Clinton. His political agenda is not main-stream democrat but socialist, racist, Marxist and communist. Look at his past and his associates. He has been a do- nothing senator, all talk and no real action that would support the average American family. He is opposed to drilling for more oil and gas to help with the energy crunch. Most of his legistation was more hand-outs for irresponsible people and his district lost 11% of their jobs while he was in office. A do-nothing politician. I will not vote for him. He lacks intergity and judgment.

am an Independent. I have a huge dislike for the Democratic Party because the are addicted to losing. They have this tendency to cut off their noses to spite their face. The dems are the most spiteful and vindictive party and I find most of you petty and small.

A vote for McCain means
a vote against equal pay for women
roe
vets being rewarded for giving one tour of duty often risking their lives in Iraq (heaven forbid)
a vote against the oil companies not getting to lobby state officials to let them take the chance of destroying our coastline befopre they have looked at the millions of acreage they already have… becaus ethey haven’t even thougb people are spinning
a vote for McCain is a flat vote against getting children covered by soem kind of healthcare in a country that says it has grace on it’s side.
a vote for McCain is a vote for the speeches he is giving that match the speeches he gave before we went into Iraq…that Bush asked he and Lieberman to give under the committee for Liberation of Iraq…
only this time it is Iran
a vote for McCain is a vote to let Afghanistan continue on the road they have been on.
a vote for McCain is a vote for 96% of the same policies as the last 8 years.
a vote for McCain says I think the last 8 years were not so bad.
He’s a good guy…he’ll do what he says…
well what he says is in direct opposition to everything that Hillary ran for.

It’s clear, in just the past few days, that Obama is on the “hot seat” and seems to be losing it…some analyst are saying it seems like he’s on the verge of insanity
*********
LOL! Let me guess….the “analyst” was you, right??? Right, am I right? Or was it FOX NEWS??

Senator Obama reminds me of a pro basketball player who wants to win so bad, he does foolish things which are called fouls. He looses the game.
SENATOR MCCAIN IN NOVEMBER 70% TO 28%.

Posted by: Mary | June 23, 2008, 1:39 pm 1:39 pm

@ Vero Pssumus:
No it’s not me. It was actually on Obama’s on news network, CNN. Obama is going cuckoo……and, guess what, the GOP is LOVING IT!!!!

Posted by: david from texas | June 23, 2008, 1:40 pm 1:40 pm

Come on, Obama’s one smart guy. He makes the hard decisions. He’s already leading McCain. Democrats wanted Hillary because they want health care, a solid economy, tax breaks for seniors and middle income. It’s over, McCain, Democrats for Hillary are smart enough to see through you.

Posted by: Sallie | June 23, 2008, 2:16 pm 2:16 pm

Those 10% of HRC supporters that are very angry about their candidate’s defeat are not really true democrats, they are a closet Republicans who will not vote for Dem in the General election anyway, so keep your vote and anger to yourself. Don’t keep whining and try to push in our throat about your intention voting McSame. Besides, don’t hide your racism

Posted by: fd | June 23, 2008, 2:20 pm 2:20 pm

I don’t know… it just seems like this article doesn’t talk about the core differences between Obama and McCain and both of their percieved weaknesses… if Obama’s biggest weakness is that he is taking money from millions of online donors rather than public financing… then I think he’ll be just fine. :) He’s flip-flopped on this, sure… but what has McCain NOT flip-flopped on? Ask yourselves this… which flip flop will affect you the most… Obama flip flopping on campaign finance or McCain flip flopping on Bush’s tax cuts for the rich? (he now agrees with Bush in that they should be made permanent)

Posted by: Blake | June 23, 2008, 2:33 pm 2:33 pm

I believe that the DNC and the superdelegates are watching and they can see how divisive Hillary and her supporters are. With all their complaining and switching impress them? Not favorably! You think you are helping but all you are doing is showing just how unenthusiastic she is in supporting Obama. You are shaming her and hurting any chances she thinks she might have in 2012. I suppose you Hillary followers think you arwe smarter than Rendell or Strickland. NOT!

Posted by: Cheryl | June 23, 2008, 3:25 pm 3:25 pm

No Hillary as VP
then NO vote for Obama
Simple as that for this democrat of 20 years…

We, the proud citizens of the US, need Senator Obama to lead us out of the quagmire of the Bush regime and into a 21st century safer and more prosperous for our children and grandchildren. I am a fervent senior citizen Asian American feminist supporter of the Obama campaign. McSame’s symptoms of dementia and senility are recognizable to anyone who’s had experience with relatives over 70. Catch Flip-Flop McSame’s many many “f***” you eruptions on You-Tube. He wants to pass certain “beers… that is, bills”, just like he wants now to drill, drill, drill and bomb, bomb. bomb. Whether Democrat or Republican, we need to put our country’s security first, and that means saving the US from a President close to senility.

I suspect, the poll is misleading and that McCain is actually under-reported and much further ahead in the polls. Sshhh, but don’t tell anyone.

This is the last ABC News story I’m every reading again.

Posted by: serena | June 23, 2008, 7:47 pm 7:47 pm

ABC media likes “Clinton” than “Obama” from DAY 1. They are never neutral.
I also noticed NBC blindly supports “Obama”
FOX supports “McCain” or any republican for any issues in a blind way..
This shows the Ugliness of media.
is there one media that is giving information without bias in USA?
The Only one I think who is very honest and neutal is Onion News network :)

Posted by: Paul | June 23, 2008, 9:42 pm 9:42 pm

John Kerry beat Bush before November in the poll but he lost to Bush in Nov 4. I don’t trust the poll and a lot of Hillary’s supporters will vote for McCain in the general election.

Wow Hillary and Obama at a Unity Rally!
I wonder what she’s going to say?
Let me guess:
Oh you know I was Lying when I said
that Barack wasn’t qualified to be
Commander-in-Chief and that John McCain
was!
I was Lying when I said that Barack’s
Campaign Amounted to one Speech!
I was deceiving you when I voiced
concerns about Barack’s 20 year associations with Rev Wright, Father
Plegar, and William Ayers!
I didn’t mean it when I said that
talking to the leaders of Iran, Syria,
Cuba. and Venezuela without
preconditions would be wrong!
I didn’t mean it when I said that
Barack’s Universal Healthcare Plan wouldn’t cover everyone! I was Lying!
Believe me Now, Barack is the Greatest!
Now let’s all sing Kumbaya!
How Pathetic, Transparent, and Totally
Disingenuous! Just Say No to Obama!
No You Can’t and Won’t!

I don’t know how Obama can be up in the polls with George Ryan/Rezko trial going on? After all the corruption in IL one wonders if the press is associated with it.

Posted by: Gramma08 | June 24, 2008, 1:41 am 1:41 am

Reaganfan 12:57:02 am,
And,,, Obama would say, I apologize for saying she played dirty sink and when she got angry ,china flied all over the kitchen.
Oh,,yes,,yes,,let kiss kiss..

No matter of Obama’s views, I can’t trust the guy. Believe me, you will be seriously disappointed if you think either one these candidates can be trusted for what they say. What makes me laugh is how naive Obama supporters are. I mean Obama’s “change”, could not be anymore ambiguous and is quite a blanket statement. So get off your high horse Obama supporters. I care about trusting the candidate before I can even begin to accept his policies as truth.

The latest Quinnipiac Swing State poll shows Barack Obama with strong support in three of the most critical battleground states.
According to the poll, Obama has a double-digit lead in Pennsylvania (52 percent to 40 percent), a solid edge in Ohio (48 percent to 42 percent) and is even ahead in Florida (47 percent to 43 percent), a state where many observers have assumed McCain would have the advantage.

Mr FLIP FLOPPER of the moment Obama will not get my vote or anyone i know. I am making sure people read up and know what a arrogant, condescending, flip flopper and most importantly inexperienced president wannabe he is. Read up on a article on RealClearPolitics.com titled 10 concerns about Barack Obama. People wake up and vote with your brain not your heart.

Andy UK:
Who said anything about Clinton? Please refrain from putting words in people’s mouths, but since you brought it up, at least what she said wasn’t as ambiguous and rhetorical as what Obama says. That’s where McCain gets points. Even if he is somewhat of flip flopper, he isn’t as ambiguous as Obama, and you know where he stands more than Obama, even if you disagree. I just want the bipartisan games to stop. I mean, let the Republicans ruin the world, let them dig their own hole.

Posted by: Travis Bickle | June 24, 2008, 4:38 pm 4:38 pm

Never mind the polls. If McCain’s victory becomes suspect, the Department of Homeland Security can start issuing amber alerts and the public will run into his comforting arms. It worked in 2004 with Bush and it will work again in 2008 with McBush.
The combination of racism and fear that characterizes the majority of the white voters is an unbeatable combination.

Posted by: Domingo Tavella | June 24, 2008, 5:38 pm 5:38 pm

But, in my opinion, Obama is using the same tactics as the Republicans. He uses the fear of not having hope, and uses the fear of not having change. True change will only come through action, not words. Until we stand up and say “We’ve had enough!”, the bipartisan antics will continue on both sides.

Someone stated that “sweetie” is not sexist. It’s not if used with the females in your family or ones you are familiar with. It is completely sexist when used to address a professional woman in a professional setting. It is terminology used by men in order to diminish a womans professional standing in the work place.

Posted by: irma | June 24, 2008, 6:19 pm 6:19 pm

Female Clinton supporter here. Not voting for Obama, never intended to. He is as dangerously unqualified and lightweight as George Bush. The way his supporters spoke, and speak, of Clinton, her treatment by the Party Comintern and their plants in the press sealed the deal firmly and permanently.
I am not interested in a man who is “good for women.” I am interested in a female president, not vice president either.

The 13th DIST. in Chicago, is enough of a reason for a person to NEVER vote in this man.
And the AOL polls are accurate. That is about the ONLY thing they do that is ‘accurate’. Perhaps they don’t want to be afiliated with a person who’s campaign motto comes from “Bob the Builders- Yes We Can’ theme song. This imbecile is making FUN of people supporting him, and frankly, insulting people that have ANY intelligence.
