McCain: Obama Went Back On His Commitment to the American People

“This is a big deal, a big deal,” Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told reporters today in eastern Iowa. But he wasn’t talked about the floods in this instance, he was referring to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, breaking his promise on opting into the public financing system for the general election.

"He has completely reversed himself and gone back, not on his word to me, but the commitment he made to the American people," McCain said, per ABC News’ Bret Hovell.

“Sen. Obama’s reversal on public financing is one of a number of reversals that he has taken," he said. "I’m especially disturbed by this decision of Sen. Obama’s because he signed his name on a piece of paper, signed his name…This election is about a lot of things but it’s also about trust. It’s also about whether you can take people’s word.”

McCain told reporters he had not yet made a decision about what his campaign would do in light of Obama’s decision.

McCain just found out this morning that his chances of winning went from slim to none. It is fortunate that Obama was smart enough to not get set up by the GOP and their 527s.

Obama’s campaign will be finance by regular Folks like me who had never given a dime to a politian before Barack. NO LOBBYIST MONEY, NO PAC MONEY, NO 527 SMEARING PLEOPLE. YES, AMERICAN PEOPLE SUPPORTING THEIR CANDIDATES!!

What a liar…but not surprising! Obama is nothing but a typical pol…what a fraud. But then again this is the same man who threw his minsiter and mentor away like a piece of garbage when it served him – beyond discraceful. I’ve always been a proud Dem but will never support Obama.

Obama HAD to get out of public financing.
McCain recently said that he would NOT be the referee for 527 ads. Thus Repubs ARE going to try and SMEAR Obama with millions upon millions of ads.
In order to counteract that, Obama needs MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS of dollars. He would NOT have gotten that from public financing.
Now he has the money to FIGHT BACK.
John Kerry said it well this afternoon. This will help Obama from getting swiftboated.

So, Sinclair’s claims have been checked and proven to be false, or is it that Obama could not possibly have done those things in the minds of his followers? Phone records were checked, limo driver questioned? I’m heading to the anti-msm for some real investigative work in a moment, but wanted a reply from the know-it-alls here.

Posted by: Dee | June 19, 2008, 4:59 pm 4:59 pm

Dee, Larry Sinclair is a joke. He has failed polygraphs on this issue. It makes no sense. You can search the depths of the Internet to find nutty theories and nitwits, but try to use a little common sense in sorting out the BS from the truth. Why would a handsome, successful man of power have to sink that low if it was his intention to risk his very promising career? Don’t you think he could have found an attractive woman (or man, if you must) with which to ruin his life?

Posted by: loovill | June 19, 2008, 5:03 pm 5:03 pm

And please note that not a single MSM even reported on it, not even those far off mainstream. Don’t you think at least one of them would nibble if they thought they’d get something on Obama like this?

Posted by: loovill | June 19, 2008, 5:05 pm 5:05 pm

Obama never intended to do anything else. The public financing pledge was a ruse to delay doing this as long as possible.
His campaign has always known the scam they’ve been running about being a grassroots effort would bite them when it came to the disclosures but they needed the fiction to pump up the media coverage for framing his run as ‘change’ and ‘historic’.
Knowing this is a hot potato, they waited to drop it until after they pilloried Clinton but before the convention and the concentrated efforts in the fall where it would do more damage.
It’s a shuck and jive media act but the Obamanation buys it. Others won’t.
Put it on the ever growing list of Obama con jobs, misdirections and outright lies.

McCain’s only crying about it because he doesn’t have close to the same number of ordinary Americans supporting his campaign as Obama does. It’s not like Obama is funding his campaign with money from lobbyists. (Which is what McCain would have to do if he didn’t go on public financing.)

Not fears lies and BS. He had votes including Barack Obama’s.
You will have to come to grips with this: the war in Iraq is an American war. We all have a piece of it.
And that is from someone who protested it even before Barack made his one time speech in a campaign not even remotely connected to Congress. I did pay a price for it. I’d do it again.
But the fact remains, blaming Bush won’t make our responsibility for allowing it to go on go away. Baby Obama is not the solution. It is going to take some savvy negotiation, planning and expertise which frankly, neither of the candidates has in spades. McCain was a line officer so he knows more.
The good choices are gone. We’re choosing among what remains. They can make their cases until November and then we vote.

A top McCain adviser told MSNBC earlier this month, “now that we’re in the general election, the RNC money counts, the DNC money counts. So the truth is today, John McCain has more cash on hand and more money than Barack Obama does.”
In April alone, they raised nearly $45 million. That’s more than the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee combined. And that doesn’t include the plans of 527 groups like the one called “Freedom’s Watch,” which has said it will spend as much as $250 million under Karl Rove’s direction to attack and defeat Barack Obama.
To compete, Obama has put his faith in ordinary people giving only what they can afford. That’s been the strategy of the campaign from the beginning and more than 1,500,000 supporters.

George, McCain is not, I repeat not, willing to sign on for public financing. That is why Obama is not. As we found out from the Kerry campaign, you can’t play nice and win against the 527s. Freedom’s Watch, a 527, has publicly stated they will spend $250 million under Karl Rove’s direction to defeat Obama. We all know what a fair player Rove is.

NoMcSAME,
You know how many people attended that fundraiser? More than 400, which gives about 1M for just one fundraiser. How many fundraisers has he done in the last two years for the Campaign?
Anyway, my point is that Obama is not 100% funded by the public as he claimed.

Here are some facts about how much special interests money Obama’s campaign has received:
Wall Street and the banking sector have given $19 million to Obama compared with $12 million to McCain through the end of May, according the Center for Responsive Politics and Federal Election Commission. Hedge funds, mortgage lenders, investment banks and private equity firms, which have been hit by the subprime mortgage and housing market crisis, are included in that group.
The trend holds true for a number of other industries, which are contributing more campaign funds to Obama, but flips on a few other business sectors:
* Communications, electronics and technology: Obama, $10.2 million; McCain $2.3 million.
* Construction: Obama, $2.1 million; McCain, $1.8 million.
* Health care, drug companies: Obama, $6.6 million; McCain, $2.5 million.
* Transportation: McCain, $988,000; Obama, $609,000.
* Energy: McCain, $1.4 million; Obama, $1.1 million.
* Agriculture: McCain, $1 million; Obama, $834,000.

The Democratic National Committee announced that it intends to file a lawsuit in U.S. District Court to try to compel the Federal Election Commission to examine whether John McCain broke election laws when his campaign rejected public fundraising, the Associated Press reports.
When McCain turned down a taxpayer-funded $5.8 million, his campaign was able to skirt spending limits that would have been in place until the Republican Party convention.
The issue in question is a $4 million line of credit obtained by the McCain campaign last year, which the DNC has argued was a violation of federal regulations. The McCain campaign and its bankers have denied that claim.

Many of Obama’s donations during the primary season came from republicans following the directions of Karl Rove who told them “anyone but Hillary.”
For every dollar that Obama receives in donations, he spends $1.40. Eventually, this will catch up with him, especially if his Republican donors dry out.
The DNC annointed Obama because they believed he would bring in hundreds upon hundreds of millions of dollars for them. Last I heard, though, they didn’t make overdue payments on the convention in Denver, and of the $70 million or so they expect it to cost, have only $11 million covered.
The DNC is now turning to huge corporate sponsors. I don’t see how this is different from “special interests.” Obama is still getting money from Rezko and his buddies, just through new “bundlers” so they are a removed by one degree.
Obama is a hypocrite and panderer. I supported Hillary, but with my next paycheck and in honor of Obama, I will contribute the little I have to Senator McCain. I hope more Hillary Democrats do the same and return the favor the Republicans did by donating to Obama.

Do you just make stuff up as you go?
Karl Rove supported Hillary, not Obama. This isn’t a secret and was all over the media.
And the Republican votes and donations from “Operation Chaos” were for Hillary, not Obama.
Not that it mattered.

Obama Rocks,
He’s ticking off all the fat cats from the GOP because even they can’t keep up with his fundraising. They’re not used to it. They’ve always had more money behind them.
And Johnny McSame is hilarious trying to point out ANYONE else “reversing themselves.” He’s CAPTAIN FLIP-FLOP.
Perhaps McLame can lend himself $11 million and claim it came from contributors to try and keep up. Oh wait, that was someone else.

I see that McCain has just said that as president he would help to expedite approval for new oil refineries. He also wants to open up some US reserves for drilling and push to build more nuclear electric plants. OBAMA WANTS NO PART OF ANY OF THIS. OBAMA IS WINDMILL GUY WHICH IS CERTAINLY APPROPRIATE FOR HIS LINE OF GOBBLEDEGOOK!! Obama’s answer to the oil crisis is to sock it to big oil companies – GREAT PRESS, but will do nothing to brig prices down or increase production. MCCAIN/ROMNEY 08

This 2005 interview with Tim Russert on Meet the Press makes it very clear.
RUSSERT: The fact is you are different than George Bush.
SEN. McCAIN: No. No. The fact is that I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I’ve been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.
Argue that!

JIMBO this is what you asked for.
Mr. McCain, who derided his onetime Republican competitor Mitt Romney for his political mutability, has himself meandered over the years from position to position on some topics, particularly as he has tried to court the conservatives who have long distrusted him. His most striking turnaround has been on the Bush tax cuts, which he voted against twice but now wants to make permanent. Mr. McCain has also expressed varying positions on immigration, torture , abortion and now drilling of new oil wells.

Posted by: Lisa | June 19, 2008, 8:11 pm 8:11 pm

Sen McCain. Who once expressed grave concern and voted against the GWB millionaire tax giveaway, claiming “it bordered his conscience”. The senator explained giving millionaire massive tax breaks at a time the country is struggling to pay it’s debt. When so few are burdened with the weight of two wars is morally reprehensible. It’s quite obvious pandering to the republican base is far more important than doing what is right for our country, certainly more important than the senator conscience.

Your information is wrong. Obama had previously said that he would investigate the possibility of using the public financing route only if an agreement could be reached with the republican nominee. Part of this agreement would have been to control the outrageous behavior of the 527 organizations. Obama has requested and received the cooperation of the Democratic leaning 527′s to this point and McCain has done nothing to even make the effort towards the republican 527′s. McCain breached any possible agreement by his own weakness and inaction

Obama is an unprincipled hypocrite. He can’t be trusted to tell the truth about anything. He was deceptive in making a promise that he never intended to keep.
The DNC has a lawsuit against McCain to keep him from doing exactly what Obama is doing now, not accepting public financing. This is how Obama always runs his campaigns – using the rules to trip up his opponents. He is a real con artist.

Posted by: rckinglets | June 20, 2008, 1:19 am 1:19 am

And McCain has not reversed himself on any of the issues?
Here’s the short list of things he was for but now against or was against but now is for: Offshore drilling, windfall profits tax on oil companies, immigration policy, Roe v. Wade, warrantless-wiretap program, privatizing Social Security, the estate tax, prohibiting waterboarding, gay marriage, Bush’s tax cuts, ethanol, the Law of Sea convention, and the DREAM Act, to name a few.
I think I prefer an Obama reversal on public financing. He made the right move. When he is President, he will be obligated to the people who put him there with their measly incomes and not to the special interests.

Barack Obama is the exact opposite of everything he pretends to be.
He has written letters urging grants of taxpayer money to financial contributors.
He engaged in a crooked real estate deal that netted him a $300,000 financial benefit.
He is saying mean and untruthful things about his opponent when he previously pretended to support ending negative politics.
Now he is taking money from the rich and special interests hand over fist when he pretended to be against that.
Obama is a fraud.
This election is not about “passion”. Obama’s passion is written by speech writers and read off of teleprompters. It is phony just like Barack Obama is.

Why on earth would Senator Obama agree to restrict his fund raising while the RNC and 527′s raise and spend millions to slime him with the kind of stuff we saw during the North Carolina primary? It’d be like going into a fight with one hand tied behind your back. The Obama campaign and Democrats are not going to allow a repeat of the sleaze that the Rebublicans pulled in 2000, 2002, and 2004. There will be punch back on slime like “Purple Heart Bandaids” and having Senator Cleland’s face morph into Saddam’s and Osama’s.
I’d think those of you who are calling Obama a socialist, a Marxist, a crook, etc. would be grateful that he’s not spending your $85 million. Those of us who support him are happily spending our own.

Obama is a CHAMELEON, changes his words to fit the occasion. In the 2004 election that was known as a “flip-flop”.
But no amount of money or election fraud tactics will get him elected…he out spent Hillary and still fell behind her in popular vote. Had the Hillary campaign realized the third world electoral fraud tactics that occurred in the caucuses or had federal agents been summoned earlier (as done in SD and MN)the DNC would not have been able to fraud their way into picking Obama as the nominee. No amt. of $ will get him past the Republicans….there aren’t bound by party loyalty like the Clintonites.

From a Common Cause press release in February.
“Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has committed in writing that, if elected president, he would make it a priority to enact full public financing of elections for Congress. He also is a cosponsor of a Senate bill, the Fair Elections Now Act, S. 1285, to bring full, voluntary public financing to congressional elections. Sponsored by Assistant Senate Majority Leader Durbin (D-IL) and Arlen Specter (R-PA), the bill would give all qualified candidates public financing to run for office once they agree to forgo all fundraising and adhere to strict spending limits. While serving in the Illinois legislature, Obama supported similar public financing legislation for state elections”

This is a bogus argument. The original “promise” called for negotiations with John McCain. The McCain and Obama campaigns have agreed to disagree on everything, so this whole thing is a moot point. “If you are nominated for President in 2008 and your major opponents agree to forgo private funding in the general election campaign, will you participate in the presidential public financing system?”
You can read Obama’s response here. The candidate highlighted the simple answer “Yes” and elaborated as follows:
In February 2007, I proposed a novel way to preserve the strength of the public financing system in the 2008 election. My plan requires both major party candidates to agree on a fundraising truce, return excess money from donors, and stay within the public financing system for the general election. My proposal followed announcements by some presidential candidates that they would forgo public financing so they could raise unlimited funds in the general election. The Federal Election Commission ruled the proposal legal, and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has already pledged to accept this fundraising pledge. If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.

People that learn from their experience are pretty darned intelligent in my book. I’m sure Obama needs extra money to offset the money he has to spend to put out the 527 and bigot-created fires/distractions. In what other campaign have you ever witnessed has a candidate had smears of bigots thrown right into the nightly news mix? None, I’m sure.
