A Ludacris Obama Supporter

No, that’s not a typo. I am of course referring to rap star Ludacris, with whom Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has worked on AIDS awareness.

Obama recently told Rolling Stone magazine that Jay-Z and Ludacris are "great talents and great businessmen".

"It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying they were getting bad images of themselves," the candidate said.

And speaking of which…hide the blog from Malia and Sasha, Ludacris has a new song out, "Politics: Obama is Here."

Some choice lyrics:

"You never should’ve doubted him
with a slot in the president’s iPod Obama shattered ‘em
Said I handled his biz and I’m one of his favorite rappers
Well give Luda a special pardon if I’m ever in the slammer
Better yet put him in office, make me your vice president
Hillary hated on you, so that b—- is irrelevant
Jesse talking slick and apologizing for what?…

"You can’t stop what’s bout to happen, we bout to make history
the first black president is destined and it’s meant to be
the threats ain’t fazing us, the nooses or the jokes
so get off your ass, black people, it’s time to get out and vote!
paint the White House black and I’m sure that’s got ‘em terrified
McCain don’t belong in ANY chair unless he’s paralyzed
Yeah I said it cause Bush is mentally handicapped…"

Obama spox Bill Burton says: "As Barack Obama has said many, many times in the past, rap lyrics today too often perpetuate misogyny, materialism, and degrading images that he doesn’t want his daughters or any children exposed to. This song is not only outrageously offensive to Senator Clinton, Reverend Jackson, Senator McCain, and President Bush, it is offensive to all of us who are trying to raise our children with the values we hold dear. While Ludacris is a talented individual he should be ashamed of these lyrics."

Word.

UPDATE: ABC News’ Sheila Marikar points out that rapper Jay-Z mentions Obama in a verse from his song "A-Billi":

"I see Benjamins
and a billion other ‘big head’ people
imma natural born hustla
Marcy project mutha f**ka
Turned proffesional journalist
reportin’ live from the gutter
where girls carry box cutters
brothers shoot-up with undercovers
screamin’ ‘F**k the World!!’
Why?
Cause’ don’t no body love us y’all
Shawn Carter, Sean Bell
What’s the difference? Do tell
50 Shots Or 50 Mill?
Ain’t no difference go to hell
So raaahh, lick a shot for Barack Obama
change gon’ come or imma
buy the whole hood lamas on me
Roc nation army"

Shown the lyrics and asked for comment, Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said, "What does this mean?"

Obama at UNITY 08 yesterday:
“I personally would want to see our tragic history, or the tragic elements of our history, acknowledged,” the Democratic presidential hopeful said.
“I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it’s Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds.”

Ha, ha, that’s really going to make the uptight Dittoheads explode in faux-outrage. Of course, to counter, all Obama has to do is print out a few threads on FreeRepublic or Lucianne, or play a snippet of hate-mongers Hannity and Savage, and show how McCain supporters talk.

There is no way we can believe the sincerity of Obama in his criticism. This is a man who did not condemn Bernie Mac in his offensive comment, who did not comment on Jackson’s offensive racist words, and also in his Iowa victory campaign, used 50 cent’s offensive song “99 problems”.
Hypocrite, fraud, unbelievable.

Don’t worry – Obama isn’t going to give away any $$ to any ethnic groups. He is smarter than that. America doesn’t have any $$ to give to anyone. We already owe too much to China. Besides, one man doesn’t run the show. Congress would have to approve any reparations, and that just wouldn’t go over well with the American taxpayers, most of whom were not around 200 years ago, when African slaves and Native Americans were being mistreated and slaughtered by the white settlers who came to this land to conquer, so it’s not gonna happen. The best way for any “reparations” to be made is to provide a quality education to these two groups so that they can create their own ticket out of poverty. A good education will do that. It also can cure a lot of social ills that we currently experience, too.

this will be Hannitys montra FOX’s and MSM lead in for the next 6 months. Whatever one black person says it’s like we all said it simultaneously.

Ludacris supports Obama? This is NEWS?! Would anyone actually think Ludacris would support McCain?

Posted by: Rhys | July 30, 2008, 3:40 pm 3:40 pm

Have we all forgotten about the FISA vote? Obama vowed to filibuster it…until it started looking like he’s going to be the one doing the spying. Now, he votes to let the government continue to spy on American citizens. Why does he want NOW what he considered unlawful and a violation of civil liberty then?

Posted by: Charlie35 | July 30, 2008, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

And again, this is what it’s been about but no one can step up to it: black culture. Obama isn’t a representative of black culture but he wants to be. And that means all of these issues will be on the table for the next four years if we elect him.
Reparations? Ain’t gonna happen, but we’ll have that fight. The reply from the usual suspects will be, “Ok, you give back the welfare and we’ll deduct that from the reparations and see where the ledger balances”, and that kind of talk will put us back in 1963.
Sorry, but it really isn’t the most pressing issue on the American agenda.
The Dems really blew it. Can they clean it up in Denver? Not without some very prominent people admitting they are wrong. Since they won’t do it, they’ll take their chances in November.
This will be fodder for books for the next century: How To Give IT Away.
Puhleeze, SF, recall Pelosi.

SUPPORTING OBAMA IS LUDICROUS

Posted by: krist | July 30, 2008, 3:54 pm 3:54 pm

Truth,
I am not a member of the white race. I don’t like BO for a number of reasons and none of them have to do with race. Likewise, I don’t like McCain either for other policy reasons. But, given the fact that rap has garnered so much negative reactions by people my age who are white, I know that they will find it offensive and that will only pile on the reasons for them not to vote for him. Also, look at it this way, Hillary was called the b**** in the song. I don’t think that will be constructive in bringing unity to the party, do you? I didn’t think so…

This is something that is suppose to emerge from an articulated, well-informed man for an energy policy? Huh?
“We could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups. You could save just as much.”
Energy savings from inflating our tires and tune-ups to be equivalent to all of the recoverable oil from offshore drilling? Including the fact that his sentence was mangled, I like to see his math involved here! And this is the “celebrity”? America is in deep trouble if he gets into office.

Obama’s name also makes a cameo in “Lolli Lolli (Pop that Body)” It says, “Like Obama said, yeah it’s time for a change.” It’s really no big deal. It’s music. Also under freedom of speech, so even though it’s insulting to some people, they still have that right.

Posted by: Nikki | July 30, 2008, 4:46 pm 4:46 pm

Can you people read? Obama only complimented them for their talent and business skills. They make bank. Much. He said, he can’t let his kids listen and that Luda should be “ashamed” of the lyrics. He did not in anyway set Luda and Jay-Z up to be spokespeople or accept an endorsement. Luda and Jay speak for Luda and Jay and anyone that openly embraces their ideals. That person would not be Barrack Obama. Unfortunately, in a country that protects free speech, he can’t control what they say about him good or bad, anymore than he can control what McCain says.

Big deal, they worked on Aids Awareness together. It’s not like they hang out on Sundays after church or will join him on the campaign trail. So now that Barack’s camp just came out and said that Ludicris “should be ashamed” of his song lyrics, does that mean that Ludacris wont get an invite to perform his trash at the White House? Do all the black rappers feel let down and disallusioned that their “black savior Barack” thinks that they are low-lifes? Awwww, I feel so sorry for them. But, does he really think that they are low-life rappers?

Posted by: PhillyPaul | July 30, 2008, 5:45 pm 5:45 pm

Obama’s working on “AIDS awareness” with Ludacris? Now that’s ludicrous. Maybe he should advise his friend to stop glorifying promiscuous sex in his songs and videos. That should prevent at least a few thousand people from getting AIDS.

Astounding. Nearly every news article is spun toward the negative when it comes to Obama. Even his fully successful trip to Europe was written up with negative undertones by the press. Television interviewers are continually trying to trip him up to make a news story. They seem so desperate to show he is fallible they can’t stand it. McCain is too easy for them. His awkward style of reading pre-scripted notes is not news because everyone understands McCain is nothing more than a bumbling puppet for the current powers in charge. For the so called liberal slanted media, they really are trying to bring Obama either down or at least keep him within striking distance for McCain. I wonder what gives other than an attempt to keep people interested with a close contest that should be a blowout in Obama’s favor. This article is pretty much pointless unless they are trying to get someone fired up either by saying Obama is not culturally sensitive to African Americans or by his response not being good enough against Hip Hop to please the racists in the country. Once again the media is attempting to place Obama in a no win situation.

Surely as bad as everyone has painted W press has already elected the next POTUS.

Amazing. This is, wihtout a doubt, the most hateful, negative, fact-lacking, opinionated presidential campaign we’ve ever had,… and the presidential hopefuls haven’t even been crowned by their respective power mongers yet. The people are showing exactly what their made of. The two candidates have hardly even said anything to each other, yet their polarized armies are ready to go to war,… against each other. Frankly, if these two candidates are going to bring out this kind of behavior amongst Americans, I have no interest in either one of them,… or their mindless zombie mouthpieces. Really, people, neither side has any right opening their traps about hate,… that’s all either camp seems to do.

It’s so funny how racist people are. It seems that no matter what Barack Obama does or says SOME PEOPLE (you know which ones) still don’t get it. They say he’s a Muslim, Not,just a church going Christian. Most whites don’t want to vote for him simply because he’s black, NOT. If you didn’t know by now he’s bi-racial,born to a white mother from Kansas and an African father. To me it’s the best of both worlds he can actually relate to both sides.
First, they tried to hurt him with the Jeremiah Wright s**t, and that backfired. I disagreed with my black pastor when he told the congregation we should vote for Bush, and that’s my right. Who are we to criticize anyone about their religious beliefs with political figures getting jailed for sex acts, fraud, and everything else. Then, some fool brought up the fact that he’s unpatriotic. Now that was funny, when Hurricane Katrina hit Bush nor Cheney were anywhere to be found mainly because the catastrophic event involved mostly blacks. However, their are quite a whites, latinos, and others that reside in Louisiana. But as soon as Texas had some bad weather he had the Coast Guard and everyone else their on standby. And the last thing the Republicans tried to play on backfired on their a**es. Now they are walking around looking stupid. McCain dared Obama to go to Iraq and other places. Now that he’s being praised for wanting to handle things the right way, they are calling him a celebrity. Well, guess what the Republicans made him the celebrity he is. He’s not the one thinking he’s a “Rockstar”, all the people around the country and the world that are educated and half sense are tired of Republicans and their mess and want a change. He want be able to clean up all this mess in 4 years though, voters do need to understand that it only took Bush 2 years to create it but it will take a decade to fix it. John McCain needs to sit his 711 year old behind down. His wife is just waiting on him to croke so she can collect.
BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT, VOTE OR DIE!

Obama is turning on black rappers…. Yet another side show to this circus. Obama is just pandering to blue collar whites at the expense of blacks again.
If Obama can stand up to black rap artists, why couldn’t he stand up to R. Wright? Oh! That’s right; he needed the support of the black community at that time. And maybe Michelle and he really do think like Wright. A twenty year membership answers that question.

Posted by: rogersm234 | July 30, 2008, 10:31 pm 10:31 pm

When will the music industry stop supporting and promoting such negative artists? I don’t want censorship, but surely some brother has a more positive message out there to shout about. When will the world stop spreading anger and hate?! When will music executives start promoting positive artists? America is tired of negativity. Rise above y’all.

Another example of Ibama taking both sides of an issue.
He listens to this crap, likes it, heaps praise on the performers, and out of the other side of his mouth says the lyrics are bad.
Take a good look at the picture and the lyrics. This is what will be occupying the White House (Black House according to the rapper) if Ibama is elected.

I can’t say any more than what’s already been said about how low rent and juvenile this unmusical abortion is or the disappointing associations and actions of Senator Obama but even the sharpest critics have not denied the claim that Luda is a “great talent”. Great talent? Please. Having the ability talk in rhythm and produce “go nowhere” tracks does not a “great talent” make. If you like this stuff, fine but folks, it does not require “great talent”.

Absolute 100% abomination. Unbelievable,,,, words can not really discribe how racist, and militant this lyric is. Obama should be personally and adamently condemning this absurd rhetoric in a press conference.

Posted by: Badger1 | July 31, 2008, 1:33 am 1:33 am

I am no Obama supporter but in no way is Obama responsible for Ludacris’s rap. Further, Ludacris is free (as are we all) to rap about whatever he wants. But we are all free to decide how to react to this.
In politics, everything that anyone close to a candidate does or says is in play. That’s just the nature of the game.
What I do find VERY interesting is that Obama admitted he listens to Ludacris while at the same time also admits he does not want his own daughters exposed to Ludacris because of how his rap lyrics might affect his daughters. Weird human logic, I guess.

Katie, sweetie,
The reason there are no posts in favor of McCain on this thread is because the blog piece is NOT about McCain. In other words, posts on the subject you suggest would be off-topic and therefore irrelevant to this thread.

May I quote another talented person, Justin Timberlake…Cry Me A River!!!
You guys act like you care about whether Obama likes Ludacris or his lyrics. Face reality and stop hiding behind every little issue that arises.
Reality…more than half of you have used the “N” word or the “B” word in everyday life. If you think McCain, with his notorious temper, is spitting out non-offensive words in his personal tirades…you’re sadly mistaken.
You just wanna knock Obama down no matter what.
I get it that you don’t like Obama. Give me one reason why? (Please spare me the guilty by association game, I want facts about him.) Convince the undecided voters that your points are valid.
I think I know why, but prove me wrong. Some of you are doing it for racist reasons, some for class reasons and others are doing it just cause they’re followers and couldn’t lead if their lives depended on it.

Posted by: Drew | July 31, 2008, 3:38 am 3:38 am

Drew – I have a better idea, why dont you tell us , why you like Barack Obama. Tell what he has done in his life, personal, or political that gives him the right to claim “change we can belive in” or “judgement to lead”. You people keep whining about guilt by association,,, well face reality, the list of hateful venomous people in his life continues to grow, and many of these people he has been associated with for year. Show me your friends, and Ill know who you are. Just his 20 year stint in a black power church is bad enough , let alone the major flipflops, and deceit.

Posted by: Badger1 | July 31, 2008, 3:59 am 3:59 am

The McCain video of Obama with the two blonde whatever gals, Britney and Paris, happened in close timing yesterday to Ludacris’s infamous song release. I couldn’t help but observe a certain serendipity in this interplay of events which favored Obama. For one, the clearly petty McCain video and its controversies deflected attention from Ludacris’s noxious song lyrics and his associations with Obama, something his damage control spoxes probably appreciated. So once again, Lady Fortune, aided by the McCain campaign, bestows her advantages to Obama. Or perhaps it’s best summed up as “WHATEVER!” by Paris and Brit.

Kat – Thats ok, this rap garbage wont be going away anytime too soon, and the fact that McCains ad came out at the same time is going to affect the disgust people feel from hearing that hate filled racist filth. Obama has run out of spin when it comes to controversial, radical minded people in his life. I dont see how anybody with a sense of decency , and a shred of common sense would even consider B Hussein Obama. His true colors surfaced when he chose to join and remain in a black power church for 20 years.

Posted by: Badger1 | July 31, 2008, 4:09 am 4:09 am

Just like Rev Wright, Rev Plager, former terrorist Myers etc.. Obama isnt saying these horrible things but it is revealing because he is very very liberal and these are the views of the liberal left; the people he represents. It isnt suprising that he went to a far left church.
How many times have you heard far left liberals say how much they hate Bush, even on a personal level? They do all the time, they hate Bush as a person and this is Obama’s base. McCain has a view crazy friends too, but so far the crazies in his base have not turned out to be people he knows very well. We shall see if more of Obama’s radical circle of associates and friends come out in public.

So blind — God I wished you had paid this sort of attention to Obama’s actions last year. Maybe if the press actually talked to people on the ground (rather than sit in their chairs and pontificate about how great Obama was) they would have seen the man that many of us saw.
Obama’s campaign ROUTINELY played J-Z’s 99 Problems at victory parties — including, most notably, in Iowa when he trounced Hillary. Listen to the words, Jake. This is not anything new.
Remember Obama’s shoulder brush — where, in reference to Hillary and the ABC debate, he brushed the “Dirt off his Shoulder” ala Jay-Z? Then he wiped the #### off his shoe in reference to same? Totally innocuous, right?
You remember Wright and Phleger calling Hillary a racist and a “hater” – a white supremacist member of the 4H (for 4Haters) club? Where was Obama then? Could not even bring himself to express regret for the pain those comments caused.
You remember Michelle Obama admonishing voters not to vote for Hillary – because, well, a woman who can’t keep her own house in order can’t keep the White House in order? Nice.
Even now — in connection with the Ludacris comments – Obama does not apologize on the rapper’s behalf, or express regret for the impact of the words on Hillary (or the pain it causes those who support her). Instead, he relates it to himself (AS ALWAYS) and is sorry his own daughters have to hear it.
You hear Obama make comments about being “likeable enough” and you think it is just a regular jab. Women hear it and feel it reveals a deep misogyny. Funny, he never reduces McCain’s positions to “silly season.”
Obama knew Ludacris before the campaign – he approached him to help get the young black vote out. You think Obama was unaware of the kind of lyrics that are in his songs?
Obama still will not reach out to women — he still tells them, Hillary supporters, and even women in the Congressional Black Caucus to “get over it.” Way to show you care, Barack.
He routinely makes it clear that we are superfluous and unimportant. He is dismissive, and has kicked sand in our faces time after time. The list is too long — but it includes Patti Solis Doyle, backtracking on the mental health exception, and refusing to work for our votes because he thinks he can use abortion as a hammer to put us in his column.
And you wonder why Hillary’s women won’t get on board with this guy?
When will you see him for what he is???

Posted by: thegreenbeastie | July 31, 2008, 11:39 am 11:39 am

This is for “kat”. One thing Obama did that is honorable is that he helped people on the Southside of Chicago. You know average people. Oh yeah, the very pictures shown of Obama and Ludacris were taken at an Aids fundraiser. What has McCain done for anyone besides himself and the people of Vietnam. Educate me about McCain.
For others, who say statements like you can judge someone by the friends they keep. Then if you realize in 1989, McCain was part of The Keating Five. That would make him a friend of corrupt politians. CHeck your history before you spit out nonsense. Oh and believe me, some of you will say he got off and the rest were Democrats. I don’t care they were all crooked and should have went to jail. But the fact remains, McCain is guilty by association according to your own standards. Prove me right the you can’t handle the truth with a stupid response supporting McCain after you learn about this devious part of his history.

Drew, I’m actually an Obama supporter. I sometimes fly off into humor as a release from the political tension these days. I observed an irony with the McCain campaign deflecting attention away from Ludacris with the incredibly bad and timed video. I find personally the Ludacris lyrics offensive and misogynist, but I don’t associate his lyrics to Obama, which is perhaps the intention of some of the showcasing. I also respect the AIDS work Ludacris has done. Sometimes we just have to stop taking ourselves so seriously.

Posted by: Kat | July 31, 2008, 1:47 pm 1:47 pm

you have a rapper saying such hateful things toward sitting united states senators, a war hero (mccain), a former first lady, etc. this should be eye opening to a certain community, but no leadership. not even from obama. this is so sad, and is a reflection on the lack of knowledge of history, and the efforts made by the two senators to make this world a better place. what next… why doesn’t he call eleanor roosevelt, abigail adams, and martha washington horrible names also. shame.

Greenbeastie,
Everything you said about Obama pretty much says he has to apologize for another persons’ actions and for the effects they may have caused the targeted person.
When in your lifetime have you apologized for something someone else said. MAKE SENSE!!!! What is this the BABY GENERATION. If anyone should be apologizing, it’s the person who said it. I have yet to see McCain apologize for anyone and I don’t expect him to either.
Do me a favor…check McCain’s background. Especially The Keating Five incident. It’s funny McCain has been investigated for political corruption and Obama shows respect to rappers and the latter is an issue. And you wonder why people pull race cards.
Explain to me what could it be when a white man has been charged with CRIMINAL ACTIONS and the courts let him off with a stiff warning saying he has TERRIBLE JUDGMENT and somehow he has better judgment than a black man with no record of being investigated for so much as a traffic violation.
I’m willing to understand, but you have to educate me on why this would happen.
It’s obvious no one here has a clue about McCain or his past history beyond being a war veteran. The fact still remains John McCain is a CRIMINAL that got away.

No matter how old and out-of-touch John McCain may be, there is no doubt he loves and reveres America. He is a patriot who has sacrificed for this great Nation and he would never dishonor the office of President or allow such shameless disrespect to be perpetuated on our land and it institutions. Rest assured that Big News is in 24 hour hyperdrive, furiously trying to find a singer/celebrity who supports McCain or has any association whatsoever with the GOP who has written something untoward about Obama.. their MO has always been, when it’s a Repucblican supporter who says something outrageous, thrust a mike in front of the leading GOP candidate and ask him to defend them… when it’s a Democrat supporter saying something equally outrageous, go and find a similarly crude remark/action on the right and say “See.. see! they’re just as rotten as our side!!”

Obama can criticize rap artist a bit more harshly than he could Wright, because he doesn’t know most, if not any of them, on a personal bases that he does with reverend Wright; someone he considered his close friend. I have friends who say ignorant things or things I don’t agree with and even offended by, it isn’t like the next day they’re not my friends anymore. I’m no fair weather friend. And if everyone scolded their friends for every offensive thing they did, you’d have only one friend, yourself. Personally, Wright didn’t say anything that offended me nor thousands of other Americans. I just thought he was expressing anger when he spoke against American policies, like conservatives express anger when they criticize America on Fox every night. Some were angry because they were primmed to be angry to begin with; those searching any reason to validate their bias against Obama or even their bias against the Democratic party for what they perceive they represent, were more offended.
