Bush Says Wall Street’s ‘Got a Hangover’
ABC News’ Matt Jaffe reports: At a private fundraiser last week in Houston, President Bush, away from press cameras and unaware that he was being recorded, joked about the country’s housing crisis and said Wall Street is hung over because it "got drunk."
"There’s no question about it. Wall Street got drunk — that’s one of the reasons I asked you to turn off the TV cameras — it got drunk and now it’s got a hangover. The question is how long will it sober up and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments," the president said Friday at a fundraiser for Republican congressional candidate Pete Olson.
The event was closed to members of the press corps, but video of Bush’s remarks was recorded on a personal camera and posted on the Internet.
"Then we got a housing issue, not in Houston, evidently, not in Dallas, because Laura was over there trying to buy a house today," Bush said of first lady Laura Bush. "I like Crawford. Unfortunately after eight years of asking her to sacrifice, I’m now no longer the decision maker. She’ll be deciding, thanks for the suggestion. I suggest you don’t yell it out when she’s here. I did tell her, I said honey, we’ve been on government pay now for 14 years, go slow."
The crowd in attendance laughed loudly during Bush’s comments before his voice trailed off.
"But it’s, uh, I’m losing my train of thought."
White House spokesman Scott Stanzel told ABC News this evening that the president’s statement about the economy was "not unusual."
"There clearly was a problem with the markets’ understanding of risk associated with very complex investment instruments once confronted with the housing downturn," Stanzel said. "The President has made these points before. It is not unusual to describe the situation this way, as others have used the very same language to characterize the current problems, as well as past problems, in markets."
However, Bush’s remarks are a departure from the more conservative tone he usually takes when speaking to the press. Earlier last week, in fact, the president preached optimism about the economy in a nationally-televised news conference.
"I’m an optimist," Bush said at the White House last Tuesday. "I believe there’s a lot of positive things for our economy, but I will tell you it’s not growing the way it should."
He acknowledged that the economy was experiencing "a tough time", but did not compare the current situation to a hangover.
"The bottom line is this: We’re going through a tough time," Bush said to the crowded press briefing room full of television cameras. "But our economy has continued growing, consumers are spending, businesses are investing, exports continue increasing, and American productivity remains strong. We can have confidence in the long-term foundation of our economy, and I believe we will come through this challenge stronger than ever before."
The nation’s economy has been struggling for months, with some analysts citing a faltering housing market, rising gas and food prices and collapsing banks as evidence that the country has fallen into a recession. The national average for gas prices has been over $4 for seven consecutive weeks. IndyMac, a bank with $32 billion in assets, collapsed this month, becoming the fourth-largest financial institution ever to fail. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson stepped in to propose a rescue plan for government-sponsored mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And the Federal Reserve has cut interest rates 3.25 percentage points since mid-September, down to the current level of 2 percent, with the Labor Department reporting recently that inflation had risen to its highest levels since 1981.

Texas is the only state not feeling the drain of the Bush economy. I think we should build the immigration fence at the Red River and make sure that Bush is in the state when we finish it.

Bush and the Republican elite, CAIN included, laugh at the economical pain the middle class feels in America.
Luckily, Mrs.Bush has time to buy some cheap bankruptcy houses now that the price is good for those who have money.
Republicans would love to have a young, strong, intelligent, strategic, moral and well spoken candidate like Obama.

Who is supervising oil in Iraq? Who is to say Bush cronies are not filling a supertanker a day of crude unwitnessed, thats why there is no strategy to leave.
Then they claim a shortage to jack up prices. Soldiers are dying to line corporate pockets. It is so obviously shameful.
There will be a time for revolution, when will America revolt? Two party system sucks, read Jesse Ventura.

Church has been forced out of almost all aspects of our lives….so how can you say Christianity was responsible for what took place over the last 8 years? It was taken out of the schools, out of the government, etc… and then you make a comment like that? Just because a politician says he’s Christian doesn’t mean squat. Anyone can say anything. It’s almost the “politician” thing to do these days, yet you really don’t have any evidence of it other than their word. Which coming from a politician, doesn’t mean much!

The know all about Obama yet they won’t argue the facts because they know they’ll lose. So they resort to making stupid remarks to muddy the discussion to prevent real discussion from taking place.

Another wonderful insightful monologue by a man you never seems to run out of them.. Oh why oh why do republicans insist on defending a man who when ever he opens his mouth only my 3 year old nephew understands what he is saying.. I thought a ‘President’ should show some type of intelligence and at least some ability to speak. Everytime I see him on tv, I can’t wait to see what new stupid words come out of his mouth.. I’m neither Democratic or Republican, I believe in voting for the candidate that will best serve the needs of our country and our population. Obiviously Bush hasn’t taken that into consideration in the 8 years his been ‘Warming’ the big chair.. He was more concerned about planning his retirement by making sure the oil prices surged so he could cash in..

Yeah. Go Obama. If Obama gets to the white house, we’re really in trouble. The only thing this man has accomplished in his lifetime, is a larger divide between the people of the country. His sole message is “stick it to the rich people.” Apparently, Obama believes that “rich” people don’t deserve the money they earn; they are leaches on society; and they are the cause of all problems.
I am amused that he calls people who dropped out of high school ’cause they could make $25 dollars per hour and work 45 hours a week ‘working people” and those who sacrificed 4-6 more years to go to college and work 65-80 hours a week ‘dregs upon society.’

Bush seems to feel it’s ok to tell the truth to those who can afford these private fundraisers but not the general public. This president certainly believes there are two classes of citizen, the wealthy who deserve knowledge of what’s going on and the peons who don’t.
Bush won’t release the names of the banks on the fed “danger of failing” list, but you can bet anyone at that fundraiser could get the data if they wanted it.

This man thinks everything is funny, he makes a joke out of every serious problem going on in the U.S. People are suffering with the highest cost of living in U.S.history because of his failed policies, and he is making jokes. Why? Because he doesn’t have to worry about a thing. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth and the money he is making in oil, he doesn’t give a damn about the rest of us working people in the U.S. It will be the happiest day in the country and world when he goes back to Texas, cuts down brush, and sits on his front porch belching stale beer and booze like he has done all his life. What a poor excuse for a human being GWB is let alone what a poor excuse of a leader. McCain will carry on in his bloody, muddy footsteps if he wins this year. I hope the American people have learned their lesson and get the GOP out of the WH this election before its too late to revive our country. God help us.

One of Bush’s least presidential moments –oh god, there are so many– was when he visited Germany and went on and on at a press conference about the pig they’d been served for dinner. And when a reporter asked him a serious question, he responded, “I thought you were going to ask me about the pig.”
But the worst moment was when he LAUGHED about not being able to find WMD. I believe he had created some sort of video presentation where he was looking around the White House. “Nope, not under the bed. har har.” People at this point had been dying in the tens of thousands. That was DISGUSTING.

Tom: Hey I give it to you, I know that we all work hard. But I didn’t come from rich parents. I took out loans and worked part time. Sorry dude, I worked harder than you did, and I probably make more because of it. Don’t give me any working class crap, you could go to school if you really wanted to.

Wall Street is nothing but a bunch of WHINERS with a MENTAL RECESSION, they sorely need to drink up and head to DETOX. After living on their FREE MARKET WELFARE while upticking they will enjoy their SOCIALISM to clean up their losses and help them dry out. They could even meet BRITNEY or AMY WINEHOUSE and GO STEADY….

Losing your train of thought? Jerk, that train jumped the track a long time ago. Don’t you have brush to clear?

alex—ok man yes maybe i could have but you college republican snots always say that but guess what who would do the real work if all the working class people went to college and would ther be enough college jobs no all i am saying is we working class people want a fair wage with fair benefits. why is that so much to ask for we have a ceo making millions with millions in bonuses yet the working person for that company makes 10-15 dollars an hour. that si what is wrong with america the rich make so much and the working make so little.

I wouldn’t hire Bush to mow my yard, and I sure wouldn’t use Popeye McCain for anything either.

Newsflash: McBama is not the cure for the hangover. Vote for someone else, if only to teach the two parties a lesson. Vote for Barr, or vote for Baldwin, or vote for Nader. Enough is enough.

Our Nation,
We need to turn our faces towards the ONE who can truly change the course of our country-LOVE! WE NEED to stop this bashing and get on our knees, pray and start caring for eachother whether we agree or disagree and step to higher ground and find the strength in us to WALK in LOVE not what I read here, disgust and hate.
FINE-all Presidents makes mistakes and I do not totally agree with anything that has taken place. Why can’t we rise up and stop this childish bickering of who is right and who is wrong and just grow up! Let’s step into deeper waters and BE better and stronger and help those who may be wrong and with kindness and understanding. We all can be united if we just try!

I expected to read some intelligent banter about the President’s comments, but as usual, the Libs are only name calling and complaining. The President spoke plainly and truthfully about the greed of Wall Street. It does make one “drunk”. Whom ever takes office next year will reap the benefits of his stimulus package, and take all the credit for it. As for naming the sewage plant after Bush: He will still be cleaning up all of the Liberals cr@p.

I think Mr. Bush is an active alcoholic who has been drunk through his entire presidency. It would explain much…

Bush’s “train of thought” derailed a LONG time ago. Geez, what an embarrassment! Seriously, he knew what he was saying was questionable that his why he requested the cameras off. He is in his last days…lame duck…time to be lame.

it’s really humorous. clinton pushed NAFTA through in his first term. at the time, alot of people spoke up and said it would cost the US business and jobs in this country. clinton — and many of his supporters said ‘no, it won’t- because we’ll retrain people who lose their jobs and we’ll only lose the low tech or service industry jobs’. GEE YOU THINK?
instead everyone blamed bush. he didn’t sign NAFTA and the consequences of NAFTA are very real — but they took a LONG time to hit home.
people who don’t have jobs or income can’t buy products, can’t pay taxes, can’t buy services, feed their families or house them.
michigan alone has lost 319,000 jobs in the last 8 years. it routinely has more than 650,000 people looking for work with only 40k jobs posted — but most of those are agencies trying to fill the same few jobs — not real jobs. moving? yeah — if you can find work in other states.
democrats got us into this mess along with republicans who were too wimpy to stand up to be counted. there is no free lunch and if obama is any good at all and has any sense of honor, he’ll tell you folks the fix isn’t easy. it also means that greed has to go to the bottom of the list along with rediculously outrageous benefits for CEOs who get millions of dollars and other benefits for destroying companies.
