Comedian Jokes About ‘Hos’ at Obama Fundraiser; Obama Condemns

Now this’ll surely help Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., with all those still-angry supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., not to mention the feminists confused by his recent remarks on abortion.

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports that at a Chicago fundraiser last night, comedian Bernie Mac said his "little nephew came to me and he said, ‘Uncle, what’s the difference between a hypothetical question and a realistic question?’ "I said, ‘I don’t know,’ but I said, ‘I’ll tell you what you do. Go upstairs and ask your mother if she’d make love to the mailman for $50,000.’"

Mac’s wife, in the joke, said she sleep "with anyone" for $50,000, and Mac’s daughter said the same.

Explained Mac: "Hypothetically speaking, we should have $100,000. But realistically speaking we live with two hos."

Obama addressed the issue in his remarks, saying, "We can’t afford to be divided by race. We can’t afford to be divided by religion, or by region or class. Or by gender. That means, by the way, Bernie, you got to clean up your act. This is a family affair. … I’m just messing with you."

Obama spox Jen Psaki issued a statement saying, "Sen. Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn’t condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate."

You might recall the 2004 brouhaha after, at a Democratic fundraiser, comedian Whoopi Goldberg made a joke using the word "Bush" as not only the name of the president, but a slang term for the female reproductive organs.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., at the same fundraiser had said the performers represented "the heart and soul of America," giving Mr. Bush some trail ammo, lame double entendres notwithstanding. Slim-Fast dropped Goldberg as a spokeswoman though she’s bounced back nicely as a cast member on "The View."

And now, isn’t that just like Obama to first condemn Bernic Mac for his crude and sexist comments, then turn around and add with a smile and a wink — ‘I’m just messing with you …’

Not funny is still not funny. Crude “humor” at the expense of one’s wife and daughter belongs nowhere, especially not at a political fundraiser. Better this shmuck should make fun of himself rather than the women around him.

When I first scanned this post I saw the word Mac and thought you were talking about McCain. Obama can always use the kindly old crazy uncle defense like he used with Reverend Wright. He should first denounce Bernie Mac’s words but not the man. However, if Bernie Mac tells any more jokes Obama will need to step it up to the next level and repudiate Bernie Mac himself. Obama is definitely of the presidential caliber to handle this situation, it is the one place that he has a proven record.

Take Bernie Mac OFF the short list of V.P. candidates.

Mr. Obama’s condemnation was less than enthusiastic. His spox said he “does not condone these statements”. A statement to the effect that they were reprehensible would have been more accurate. He said he “believes what was said was inappropriate”. In fact the statements were sexist and demeaning to women. Tell it like it is and move on. Words do mean something.

THAT’S THE POINT. THE ONLY THING CONSISTENT WITH OBAMA IS HIS FAILURE TO TAKE A STAND ON ANYTHING. VOTE PRESENT/JUST MESSING WITH YOU/NOT VOTING/SUPPORT GUN OWNERSHIP BUT SUPPORT REGULATION BANNING THEM/
Just messing with him. Obama says it is fine to tell jokes like that in front of children.

He’s simply a Republican masquarading as a Democrat. Once again, there really is NO realistic choice for progressives.

Considering Obama’s position, wouldn’t you have thought Obama’s handlers would have screened Bernie Mac’s material first? Again, he thinks anyone around him can say anything he or she likes, and people aren’t supposed to be offended. “I’m just messing with you” doesn’t strike me as a genuine condemnation, he’s trying to have it both ways AGAIN. As always, damage control steps in the next day when it sinks in Sen. Obama didn’t handle something the right way. So much for “being right the first time on Day One.”

This is a Sister Souljah moment for Obama: condemning behavior that is easy to condemn. It’s like saying dry rot is a bad thing; you won’t find many people upset with you as a result of your “courageous” stand.

Where are your heads! Would you ACTUALLY base your vote on an offhanded moment of awkwardness Obama had in a public condemnation? Either you folks don’t have enough to do, or you’ve fallen to the hyper-sensitivity syndrome that’s currently ailing our social narrative.
Demand to know the positions on the issues! Make your decisions on the issues! This over evaluation of personal behavior is ridiculous. Don’t forget our commander in chief pining about the obstetricians “unable to practice their love” on their patients.
Give a rest and evaluate what’s substantive.

Knowing all too well that woman voters are upset with the way that Clinton was treated, knowing all too well that comments by Obama during this campaign like “sweetie” have hit home with woman voters, knowing all too well that comments like “get over it” have made matters worse, why would you tell your speaker to NEXT TIME clean up his act —“next time Bernie, you’ve got to clean up your act”. “I’m just messing with you, man?”

Angie,
When you choose to stay with your pastor’s church for 20 years, and when you invite Bernie Mack to speak at your function, knowing his comedy routines, you can be held responsible for what they say. When someone endorses you, be it Obama or McCain, then you aren’t responsible for what they say. So, back at you, grow up.

Posted by: Buford Gooch | July 12, 2008, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm

Wake up people!! There was no condemnation by Mr. Obama here. Mr. Obama, the future president of the united states, clearly joshed with Bernie Mac about the joke. It’s a new variation of the crazy uncle defense. Obama talked out of one side of his mouth to his zombie supporters while giving joshing reassurance to his man Bernie Mac.

anyone who has listened to bernie mac knows his kind of humor, and obama must have known also, if bernie had done the joke and no one said anything, obama would have let it ride. but since someone said something, obama is now ready to throw bernie under the bus,

This IS a big deal, that AGAIN, Obama has used poor judgement in his comment “Just Messin” after such filthy stuff. He is running for President not performing at a block party. Anyone pay attention to the real world this week? Did you hear McSame’s Chief Economic Advisor call us a nation on “whiners” and claim that the recession is psychological rather than raal? Did you pay attention to McSame’s claim that the social security system is a “disgrace” that should be replaced by the same system that Shrub has been pushing without success…want your retirement to depend on this stock market? Did you hear Iraqi’s leadership tell us to leave or develop a time table for leaving…so much for McSame’s hundred year occupation. Notice that McSame’s itching to involve us in a third war in the Middle East…”Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran!”
The country’s in a helluva mess and young Americans are dying and being severely injured overseas. I know that Obama’s former pastor and Cindy McCain’s $750,000 American Express bill are fascinating but why don’t we put the tabloid stuff aside and try to focus on the stuff that really matters.

Bruce, actually Sen. Obama says he will raise the federal income taxes on the top 5% and lower everyone else’s taxes. However, under a President Obama and the Democratic majority in both Houses of Congress, the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts will be allowed to expire. That will RAISE everyone’s taxes, not just the top 5%.
An individual with an adjusted gross income of $25,000, under the current 2008 tax code, will owe $3,349 in federal income tax. When the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire that individual’s tax liability will become $3,750. That is a $401 tax increase.
An individual with an adjusted gross income of $60,000, under the current 2008 tax code, will owe $11,344 in federal income tax. When the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire that individual’s tax liability will become $13,388. That is a $2,044 tax increase.
An individual with an adjusted gross income of $75,000, under the current 2008 tax code, will owe $15,094 in federal income tax. When the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire that individual’s tax liability will become $17,931. That is a $2,837 tax increase.
The Democrats WILL allow the Bush tax cuts to expire and VEHEMENTLY DENY that they have raised everyone’s taxes. Then they will implement their own tax cuts which will sound great on paper, but will be a NET TAX HIKE.

And the day before, Obama was in northern Virginia making a speech on economic equality for women. Does he not see that sanctioning crude speech about women does real damage? He should have walked on the stage as soon as Mac made the comments, and asked him to get off.
Obama could not stand up to Bernie Mac? How is he going to stand up to national leaders, who have a lot more personal ooomph than a comedian?

Guess the DNC is sure Proud of their guy! – What a disgrace. We are electing the President of the USA – not a comedy show or rock concert.
Bet Millions of Women vote for you now – oh – just joking!
Obama is a FRAUD.

This is going out of control. this is the US and we still have the right to do or listen to jokes without meaning harm to the ladies or women or guys. Come on people! women are taking things out of proportion. we saw women and wives standing by their men even in the most disgrasful moments but soon someone else say a workd they scream feminist.

Posted by: tom | July 13, 2008, 12:26 am 12:26 am

Hey Leche,
You don’t get it. Jokes about hos have no place in a presidential campaign. Never have, never will. Instead, Obama acted to appease Bernie Mac for Mac’s inappropriateness. Appeasement in an act of a weakling. Obama is a weak man, and not of Presidential caliber. End of story.

WestCoastMessenger, you can trust that President Obama will not veto the tax increases that the Democrats will pass. They want to raise the federal income tax on gasoline $1-$3. They want to implement a windfall profit tax on the oil companies. Will windfall profit taxes on all of Corporate America be far behind?? Sen. Obama says he will raise the federal income tax on only the wealthiest 5%, but raising the capital gains tax will be a tax hike for over 50% of the workers. Then when you consider all of the new entitlement programs that Sen. Obama wants to implement and all the additional programs that the Democrats in Congress will add on, it won’t take them long to discover that they will have to raise everyone’s taxes in order to pay for these programs. So we are back to the beginning. President Obama will not veto any tax increase that the Democrats feel like passing.

Lighten up people, it was only a JOKE.

Posted by: JD | July 13, 2008, 5:19 am 5:19 am

ricky,
it was not the joke-once again it is obama’ judgement.
the joke was in bad taste-but if you know bernie mac,you know upfront what type of jokes he is likely to do.
So it really is about obama and his judgement.
first-obama should not have had bernie out there-at least not without a-well, what jokes are you going to do?
second-obama coming out there with his lame-slap on the wrist to bernie-and then saying i’m just messing with you man-is horrible.
but it seems to me (and what a shame)
bernie mac-being the proud man that he is-and successful in his own right (paying his dues to be where he is)
has to choke it down-and accept what obama said to him. all for the sake of wanting a black man for president.
no matter that THIS OBAMA is not the black man worthy of being the first black president.
I know what I think and how I feel about obama.
I always enjoyed bernie mac’ tv show.
He seem like a nice guy,
I wonder how he is feeling after being touched by Mr. “hope & change” making history obama?

Maybe the best thing for Obama and his followers to do is leave United States along with his un-American wife of his and go to the moon

Posted by: Alvin | July 13, 2008, 8:32 am 8:32 am

BO doesn’t think he should have to earn womens’ votes because he sees himself as the anointed one. Same thing with the gay community, he believes he’s entitled despite having made no real effort to advance the community’s issues. And if he is elected, don’t even try to criticize him for his boneheadedness – you will automatically be tagged a racist.

Posted by: Asia2PA | July 13, 2008, 8:35 am 8:35 am

Obama is old news. He is so stale.

Posted by: regi | July 13, 2008, 8:37 am 8:37 am

Patriot, my last post was a test.
If you question Obama’s judgement in reacting to the word’s of another, how do you defend the vulgarity from McCain himself.

Posted by: ricky | July 13, 2008, 8:38 am 8:38 am

Omigod, I can’t believe how fired up the MSM and the readers get about the little stuff. This is little stuff. I want to know why Obama voted to eviscerate the 4th Amendment. I want to know why McCain couldn’t even bother to vote. And I want to know why no one is addressing the failure of the free market theory. . . I could care less what Bernie Mac says. I could care less what Jesse Jackson says. Whatever happened to the 4th estate? Did that get buried under Shock and Awe?

Posted by: tess | July 13, 2008, 8:40 am 8:40 am

What did Obama say about WHITE Don Imus when he said almost the same thing.
And why did the slim supporting Obama have their pitch forks out ready to lynch Don Imus praising all the hateful things Obama said about Don Imus.
They also demanded he be fired from his job.

Posted by: ballsloose | July 13, 2008, 8:53 am 8:53 am

Did Michelle laugh, or did she say that it hurts her children to hear such words? I wonder if she will speak out …

To think we actually HAD an electable candidate running for president. Someone who was already in the middle, who had a true understanding of issues and committed to principles that actually work. Now the DNC has insured we will have four more years of a Republican. We’re gonna have to look at the big picture. Obama’s a screwball. McCain ain’t THAT bad. After the conventions, Obama’s toast.

Posted by: obamasbeenlyin | July 13, 2008, 9:17 am 9:17 am

i am with you on this one—but what can you expect from little minds—they probably act the same way with neighbors cannot stay away from the nonsense

Posted by: rodney | July 13, 2008, 9:33 am 9:33 am

And to think, I enthusiastically supported Obama in the Democratic primary!! After clinching the nomination and after Clinton’s withdrawal, Obama has done a complete about face from the candidate that was campaigning for the Democratic nomination. Myself, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that the Democratic Party no longer cares for the little guy. I’m voting for Ralph Nader. At least I don’t have to hold my nose to vote for him. Perhaps all of those conservatives that Obama is now courting will suddenly become Democrats. There seems to be no place for us progressives in that party anymore.

Posted by: Johnny | July 13, 2008, 9:45 am 9:45 am

ballsloose As an African American female I can tell you why its okay for bernie mac to say that and not don Imus plain and simple double standard and it sickens my stomach. There has been a lot of double standards going on here. whats the difference between a shock joc and comedian(not much). Its also the reason its okay for obama to call his grandma a typical white person, but bill/Hillary get nailed to the cross for saying jesse jackson also won south carolina and that there were more people involved in the civil rights than martin luther king jr.. like LBJ. Double standard pure and simple and people are so star struck they can see the forest for the trees.

Posted by: rachel | July 13, 2008, 9:50 am 9:50 am

i am sorry gang but this all sounds like recess in the third grade school—we have far more important issues

Posted by: rodney | July 13, 2008, 9:50 am 9:50 am

You cannot claim you are offended by Obama’s judgement when MCain reacted indifferently to much fouler langauge about Hillary and uttered a far fouler joke himself. That is hypocrisy, pure and simple.

Posted by: ricky | July 13, 2008, 10:00 am 10:00 am

Once again Obama doesn’t have the backbone to do the right thing. Afterall, if he risks being labeled “uncool” it is all over with his young voters.
Seems like Obama is more worried about
Hollywood and popularity than anything else–even to the point of using his own kids to win votes.

Posted by: cindy in nc | July 13, 2008, 10:11 am 10:11 am

For all you liberals who think this issue is not important, you are missing the point. This “news” organization has two different articles up on this same minor joke told by a comdedian. But when you try and post about a joke that came straight from the mouth of John McCain, these smart folks delete it. If you read this, come back in a minute. It will probalby be gone. The joke is on us.

Posted by: ricky | July 13, 2008, 10:36 am 10:36 am

What did Obama say about White DON IMUS?
What did he say about White John McCain when he told the joke about Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno back in 1998. Enquiring minds want to know.

Posted by: ricky | July 13, 2008, 10:58 am 10:58 am

ricky,
I don’t support, nor will i try to defend john mccain and any of his vulgarity.
but the real test for any who post here,
is to stay on topic.
the article was about obama and bernie mac.
_______________________________________
so when obama came out and told bernie told bernie off. and then said -i’m
just messing with you man.
so he was obama was really making fun of the audience-with his fake disdain.

Posted by: the patriot | July 13, 2008, 12:02 pm 12:02 pm

Sadly, just another example of how Obama seems to continually exercise poor judgment in his choice of affiliates and spokespeople. By this time don’t we realize that this is now a pattern and not a fluke?

Tess, the free market works just fine IF the politicians don’t interfere. For example, the slumping housing market should be left alone. When the prices drop enough people will start buying again. And then there is energy. The politicians and environmentalists have interferred with the cost of energy for decades by restricting the building of nuclear plants, banning offshore drilling, blocking oil companies from drilling in areas in which they already have leases. The free market is not allowed to work when you place too many restrictions on it.

“Don’t mess with me.”
Everybody knows what that means.
“I’m just messing with you.”
What that means is let me try
to express my disapproval of
what you just said or did.
Obama’s gentle rebuke was most
appropriate befitting a
presidential candidate.

Posted by: anon | July 13, 2008, 4:34 pm 4:34 pm

Anon, I interpret “I’m just messing with you” as being synonymous with “just kidding.”

handled it admirably.

Posted by: anon | July 13, 2008, 4:54 pm 4:54 pm

“I’m just messing with you.”
Depends on the tone of voice,
facial expression and the
context – can clearly mean
I kid you not, I’m serious.
“I’m messing with you,” would
have been better.

Stick a fork in Obama – he’s done!

Posted by: Steve | July 13, 2008, 6:31 pm 6:31 pm

The polls clearly reflect the disappointment people have with Obama. It is hard to believe in a year that the Democrats should CLEARLY be so far ahead that Dean/Pelosi could have messed things up so bad. Dems, call me when you get your act together!

Posted by: Chris | July 13, 2008, 6:35 pm 6:35 pm

Worry not. McCain can’t win.

Posted by: anon | July 13, 2008, 7:18 pm 7:18 pm

Has it occurred to you, self-appointed judges and juries, that “just messing with you, man” is an oxiom in the black community for “I am not messing around with you, I mean what I am saying”? What was Senator Obama’s demeanor when he said that?? was he laughing and playing punching the comidian? Was he stern? Body language is important, you know?
Of course those who do not like Senator Obama for whatever reasons will jump at anything to bring him down. I truely believe these people just cannot stand the fact that a man who is black has been so successful in his 46 years of life. (I call that attitude bigotry and racism). Obviously at 46, McCain was not all that sucessful, he ran for President in 2000 at the age of 63. Now, eight later, he is again running, only now he is 71, soon to turn 72. A previous article states the comidian did not stay on course for such events and decided to make the fundraiser about HIMSELF. I am sure Senator Obama was not expecting what transpired. Reminds me of the comidian Roseanne being invited to sing the National Anthem at a ballgame; what she did was was extremely inappropriate and disgusting. Looks like these comidians have no integrity whatsoever and don’t understand that such things as ballgams and fundraisers dictate different behavior from that at the Las Vegas casinos.

As a soon-to-be independent but current democrat I had been basking in the cool breeze of Barack Obama… until he won the nomination. There seems to be something foul in the air now and I have to say I’m not just a little afraid that Obama.Inc may have duped a great many Bush-Weary Americans. God, I hope I’m wrong!

Posted by: Ablaza | July 13, 2008, 9:21 pm 9:21 pm

NinaK, I can only speak for myself. As a staunch conservative Republican, I oppose Sen. Obama based solely on his ideology. Regular readers of this blog know that I was hoping that Dr. Condoleezza Rice would run for president. But she chose not to run. I am still hoping that Sen. McCain will be able to convince her to be his running mate.
Now as for your comment, “…that these people just cannot stand the fact that a man who is black has been so successful…,” it is ironic that many in the African-American community feel this way towards any African-American man or woman who is successful BUT who is ALSO a conservative Republican.

NinaK, the McLaughlin poll (06/26 – 06/29) has Sen. Obama up by 8 points. I don’t know if this is the poll to which you referred, but three of the latest polls have the following:
Rsamussen Tracking (07/11 – 07/13) – Sen. Obama up by 1 point, 47-46;
Gallup Tracking (07/10 – 07/12) – Sen. Obama up by 3 points, 46-43;
Newsweek (07/09 – 07/10) – Sen. Obama up by 3 points, 44-41.
When you factor in the slumping housing market, the sub-prime mortgage crisis, the sky rocketing cost of gasoline, the hit that the economy is taking overall, and the unpopularity of the Battle of Iraq, one would think Sen. Obama should be ahead by 20-25 points. Could it be that the American electorate is actually beginning to blame the Democratic controlled Congress for some of the domestic problems? Is it just coincidence that the downturn to our economy began after the Democrats took control of Congress on January 2007?
