How Politically Risky Are Obama’s Proposed Tax Hikes?
Our friend Anne Mathias, an economist of the Stanford Group Company, has an interesting analysis of just who the top wage earners in the U.S. are — and where they live. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has proposed raising a number of taxes. Most notably perhaps he has discussed allowing the Bush income tax cuts (that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., voted against but now supports) to expire. He says that Americans earning less than $250,000 per household will see their taxes cut, not raised. Mathias points out that 95.1% of the American people are in households that earn less than $200,000 — so overwhelmingly most Americans will not see their income taxes increased, if Obama’s math is correct. (That’s not to say that raising taxes on the top 4.9% — which is, after all, disproportionately the group who make the jobs — makes economic sense, necessarily. We’re just looking at numerically how risky this position is in terms of how many Americans it will affect. And of course the wealthiest also happen to often be the most powerful as well, so this can be a group it’s risky to irritate. Plus, Obama has proposed raising other taxes, including capital gains and divided taxes. As well as Social Security taxes — though, again, only for those earning more than $250,000 a year.) There’s another component to this — check out this map, by Mathias, which is interesting: The designated areas are the top 50 major city areas by income, transplanted on an electoral map of the U.S. from 2004 featuring red Bush states and blue Kerry states. (The information about the major city areas came from the Tax Foundation.) As you can see, most of these top 50 major city areas, income-wise are either in blue blue blue states (California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, or New York) or red red red states (Alaska, Texas), with fewer in swing states (with some notable exceptions such as Philadelphia, Penn., or West Palm Beach-Boca Raton, Florida.) Mathias’ conclusion: Obama’s proposed income tax increases are not very risky at all, numerically speaking, in terms of number of voters or states he will impact. Overwhelmingly most Americans will not be touched, and the ones who will are largely in electorally decided states already. – jpt

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
and it is worth mentioning that that top 5% of American earners…
their tax burden has grown at half of the rest of America over the past 30-40 years…
and that difference spiked when Bush took over and implemented his “tax cuts” favoring even further the wealthy..
It is time that is corrected.

You obviously have not done enough research…Obama talks a lot about sex ed and prevention.

I think that is most people’s “talking point”
abortion is a choice…

Yes but republicans of all creeds hear the word “tax” and there heads explode. I know playing with the top 4.9% or whatever it is is shady because they hold the cards but they’ve spent the last 7 years shipping our jobs overseas so I say tax em till they bring em back!
All the while making 95% of americans richer!

The biggest problem is that this country doesn’t have enough revenue to pay its bills–including its war bills–with the current Bush tax cuts. McCain has proposed to extend the tax cuts and add to them. It will only make the problem worse. We are borrowing from other countries to pay off debt interest. It doesn’t make for a strong economy.

If Obama is elected the stock market will drop like a rock as everyone tries to unload their stock to avoid a jump in capital gains taxes rising from 15% to 25-30%.
———-
Businesses will start compensating their employees in non-cash benefits to avoid paying more income taxes.
———-
More tax revenue is brought in when tax rates are lowered, not raised.
———-
The top 1% of taxpayers (AGI over $364,657) earned approximately 21.2% of the nation’s income (as defined by AGI), yet paid 39.4% of all federal income taxes. That means the top 1% of tax returns paid about the same amount of federal individual income taxes as the bottom 95% of tax returns.

We are sick to death of seeing these rich types skate around without a care in the world. It is high time they pay their share!
I only hope Obama taxes them so badly they know what it will be like to be poor.

Despite the continuing media spin that Obama’s socialist schemes are friendly, the fact is Obama intends to legislate a 60 percent tax bracket for upper-income Americans, killing all initiative and innovation. He will raise the top bracket to 40 percent. He will apply FICA taxes to all income, not just that under $100,000 as at present. So add 40 percent plus FICA’s 12.5 percent plus Medicare’s 2 percent plus state and local taxes averaging, after deduction, at 5-6 percent, and you have a 60 percent bracket.
Obama will double the capital gains tax, saddling the 50 percent of Americans who own stock with dramatically higher taxes.
He will also double the dividend tax, hitting elderly coupon-clippers now retired and depending on fixed incomes.
Wealth redistribution schemes straight out of the Marxist playbook will ultimately weaken America and it’s citizens. Wake up, folks.

Add to Obama’s tax hikes that he will cover 15 million illegal immigrants with federally subsidized health insurance, dramatically driving up costs and forcing federal rationing of healthcare. As in the U.K. and Canada, you will not be permitted certain medical procedures if the bureaucrats decide you are not worth it.
Obama’s agenda is not an American agenda.

As the Obamas income grew they gave more to charity. Both Barack and Michelle were also busy paying off their college loans. And Obama would pay more in tax dollars.

If someone making $30,000 a year pays taxes on every dollar of their income why can’t someone who makes $250,000 or more do the same.
The answer’s simple. If they don’t want to pay their taxes like everyone else they are greedy selfish people who put their own self interest above their country. They’re the kind of people who want more for themselves, sometimes even at the expense of others.
These are the people that use every trick in the book to not pay taxes and yet use programs funded by tax dollars.
Bottom line is these people deserve to be taxed just like everyone else.

Hear is what Mrs. Obama has to say
Here is one of Michelle’s famous quotes. If this isn’t socialist, what is. “They don’t want the whole pie. There are some who do, but most Americans feel blessed just being able to thrive a little bit. But that is becoming even more out of reach. If we don’t wake up as a nation with a new kind of leadership, for how we want this country to work, then we won’t get universal health care. The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more.”

This president has racked up huge debts, someone needs to be held accountable for paying them off.
Most, if not all, grossly high income earners are infact repuglicans. The top wealthiest in this nation are repubs.
Obama is going to make them accountable. Makes perfect sense to me. They voted for the one that racked up the debt, they can be the ones that pay it off.
Also they can pay for more government programs. National healthcare. A wonderful idea where every person has free healthcare.
Nobody in this nation will be sick again. Everyone will get treatment and medicine. Everyone will be able to get healed and fixed up proper. The rich can easily pay for this.
Obama will be the greatest president this nation has ever had, ever!

America heard the exact same “THE SKY WILL FALL!” ravings from the “Borrow and Spend” Republicans back when Bill Clinton was implementing many of the same things Obama proposes.
Result?
The greatest period of prosperity in the history of the world, balanced budgets and surpluses, a massive drop in National Debt, and a strong US dollar. Life was GOOD.
The Republicans ALWAYS run the US into a ditch when they’re in control…with Bush Junior digging the deepest Republican ditch in US history…and still these anti-American fanatics have the nerve to scream “THE SKY WILL FALL!” yet again.

THAT is when it all started going good. And not a day before. Otherwise Clinton wouldn’t have lost it all after a mere two years.

revisionist history? Look at all the factors. the right wing went furiously against the Clintons. An onslaught that began before he even took office. And if you think the public can’t be swayed by the MSW, look at the Dem. primaries.
Factor two, statistically, Americans like to have the presidency run by one party and Congress by the other. Republican congress did not make it good, Bill Clinton smarts and diplomatic abilities did.
Practically all of the Newt Grinch’s Contract with America programs became nothing more than a footnote in history.

When Obama says he is not going to raise taxes, he may be telling the truth, but not the WHOLE truth.
He doesn’t have to DO anything! Bush’s tax cuts, which affect EVERYONE, will expire in two years… automatically.
Unless they are extended, which is VERY unlikely, our taxes will revert to what they were before Bush became President.
So when Obama says he “won’t raise taxes”, my wife and I already know our taxes will double in 2010, because the two of us have a combined income of just over $100,000, and to a Democrat, this means we are rich, and should be taxed the same as Bill Gates, Donald Trump, or Warren buffet.
Obama needs to tell the REST of the story!
Posted by: Rhys | July 7, 2008, 8:31 pm 8:31 pm
“Thinking”, we have butted heads before, but let me assure you that an income for a married couple of $100,000 does NOT make us rich… maybe it would have in 1950, but not today. And, starting in 2010, our state will continue to take 11% while the Feds will revert to 36%, leaving us approximately half of our income.
Taking that same percentage from someone who makes a million dollars a year still leaves them plenty to live on and play with.

Now, however, he has returned to his budget-cutting roots, pledging that “the near-term path to balance is built on three principles: reasonable economic growth, comprehensive spending controls, and bipartisanship in budget efforts.”
In the economic white paper released by his campaign yesterday, he acknowledges that “the only way to keep the budget balanced is successful reform of the large spending pressures in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.” But he did not offer details about how he would achieve those reforms.
Social Security. With some 1/4 of the work force supported by some form of 401K, the other 3/4 ought to be very careful of just what is the Republican plan for SS, and Medicare.
With any Republican plan those who are well off allways get the what they need, the rest of us get the short end of the stick and end up propping up the program for those who need it less. In other words it is redistribution of wealth, power, benifits, government services, local and nationaly to those who have.

McCains Talking points from his website
“John McCain believes we should send a strong message to world markets. Under his plan, the United States will be telling oil producing countries and oil speculators that our dependence on foreign oil will come to an end – and the impact will be lower prices at the pump.
John McCain will repeal the 45 cents per gallon tax on imported sugar-based ethanol, increasing competition, and lowering prices of gasoline at the pump.
John McCain will roll back corn-based ethanol mandates, which are contributing to the rising cost of food.”
Now we will be dependant on foreign based ethanol which use is manadated by federal law and is which use is to be increased. Does this make any sense at all?

dl, you wrote: “top 5% of American earners…their tax burden has grown at half of the rest of America over the past 30-40 years…”
Actually you are totally wrong! The top 5% of the nation’s wage earners in 1990 represented 27% of the nation’s total income; and accounted for 44% of the total income tax revenue. In 2000 they represented 35% of the nation’s total income; and accounted for 56% of the total income tax revenue. In 2005 they (with the 2001 & 2003 Bush tax cuts) represented 36% of the nation’s total income; and accounted for 60% of the total income tax revenue. So under the Bush tax cuts the top 5% increased their percentage of the total income by just 1%, YET accounted for 4% MORE of the total income tax revenue.
So when the Left portrays the wealthy as not paying their fair share of the income tax revenue, the facts do NOT support their lie. Not only does the top 5% account for 60% of the total income tax revenue, but the top 25% account for 86% of the total income tax revenue. That means that the bottom 75% of the nation’s wage earners account for just 14% of the total income tax revenue.

Change of plans but what else is new for Obama. He gets to show off his theatrics and professional speaking voice by accept the nomination in a Denver football stadium. Of course all of the networks have been spending big bucks to cover the convention in Denver, so the public could view and be a part of the action, but now they might be required to scale back for the first three nights of the convention and just focus on the 4th final night the acceptance of OBAMA. Nothing else is important but OBAMA. We do not need to see the speeches, watch the convention, and feel the spirit of democracy in action. The Obama campaign feels that they can fill at least half of the Denver football stadium with Colorado residents all chanting OBAMA and this will make the big difference and everyone will see the great OBAMA. This reminds me of another time in history, another place, where people were blinded and just followed the great leader that turned out not to be so great.

The map is really worthless. The critical fact to gauge the political risk is wherea are those who make over 250k. The top 50 average incomes tell us nothing about where the 250k people live. It might well be that these people are evenly distributed. If one city has an average income of 45k a year and another city is 40k a year, does it really extrapolate to a similar portion of 250k earners? Not necessarily.

Watch inflation grow! Since the “rich” are like everyone else and have financial obligations, when they have to pay more taxes they will be forced to raise prices(the rich usually are business owners). They also own 2nd homes and if they can’t afford them the housing market will get another crushing blow. What’s wrong with being rich?

That’s flat wrong, and makes one wonder if you really pay taxes at all. Your average tax today (married, filing jointly) would be about 17% (considering the tax brackets). When the Bush tax cuts expire (and the top bracket, your tax burden will go up to about 23% total. That’s not counting even standard deductions, child tax credits, etc. At 100k per year, you don’t even hit the two top tax brackets.
Is it any wonder that conservatives have no credibility these days? Find some honesty.

Does Obama have any credibility on any issue including the Iraq war? Obama has zero credibility.
I will not listen to what Obama says. I look at what he does. Congratulations to the democratic party for finding their own Nixon.

The McCain team just came out with 300 Republicans experts on the economy. We have Robert Reich fighting for Obama and making the news. Robert is very effective on the Sunday talk shows. The Democrats should come out with 304 Democrat and Independent experts to show McCain’s Team that we mean business!

I now know why I am VOTING McCain!
Proposed changes in taxes after 2008 General election:
CAPITAL GAINS TAX
MCCAIN
0% on home sales up to $500,000
per home (couples) McCain does not
propose any change in existing
home sales income tax.
OBAMA
28% on profit from ALL home sales
How does this affect you?
If you sell your home and make a profit, you
will pay 28% of your gain on taxes.
If you are heading toward retirement
and would like to down-size your
home or move into a retirement
community, 28% of the money you
make from your home will go to taxes. This
proposal will adversely affect the
elderly who are counting on the income
from their homes as part of their retirement income.
DIVIDEND TAX
MCCAIN 15% (no change)
OBAMA 39.6%
How will this affect you?
If you have any money invested in stock
market, IRA, mutual funds,
college funds, life insurance, retirement
accounts, or anything that pays
or reinvests dividends, you will now
be paying nearly 40% of the money
earned on taxes if Obama become president.
The experts predict that ‘higher
tax rates on dividends and capital gains
would crash the stock market yet
do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.
INCOME TAX
MCCAIN (no changes)
Single making 30K – tax $4,500
Single making 50K – tax $12,500
Single making 75K – tax $18,750
Married making 60K- tax $9,000
Married making 75K – tax $18,750
Married making 125K – tax $31,250
OBAMA
(reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts)
Single making 30K – tax $8,400
Single making 50K – tax $14,000
Single making 75K – tax $23,250
Married making 60K – tax $16,800
Married making 75K – tax $21,000
Married making 125K – tax $38,750
Under Obama your taxes will
more than double!
How does this affect you? No explanation
needed. This is pretty
straight forward.
INHERITANCE TAX
MCCAIN 0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax)
OBAMA Restore the inheritance tax
How does this affect you? Many families
have lost businesses,
farms and ranches, and homes
that have
been in their families
for generations because they could not
afford the inheritance tax.
Those willing their assets to loved
ones will not only lose them to
these taxes.
NEW TAXES BEING PROPOSED BY OBAMA
* New government taxes proposed on
homes that are more than
2400 square feet
* New gasoline taxes (as if
gas weren’t high enough already)
* New taxes on natural resources
consumption (heating
gas, water, electricity)
AVOID THE PAIN VOTE MCCAIN!

Promises broken and he isn’t even the President yet. “I pledge to use public financing if elected the nominee” now the nominee he says it is a broken system (however it was the same system a few months earlier when he pledged to use it); He said he would filibuster an electronic wiretapping bill and now he has abandoned his vow; he formally announces that he wants to funnel public money for social spending to religious-based organizations (breaking the First Amendment of the constitution). He as criticized the Supreme Court’s decisions; He has changed his views on abortion, he is redefining Iraq planning a quick trip to Iraq to discuss with the generals but says he has not changed his time tables of removing the troops, so I guess it doesn’t matter what the generals say, so what is the point of the trip? Where does he stand on NAFTA, Gun Control as apparently he has changed his views here too? These tireless and continuous flip-flops, the tireless and continuous renouncing and disassociations, the tireless and continuous rhetoric of downing America is really getting old. America just didn’t happen. It was work and effort and lost lives to secure security and freedom. It needs work to continue to be great it does not need change to join the rest of the world —you know “eat less, heat your homes less, live on less as the rest of the world does not like us” Obama’s philosophy. Expect changes with Obama at the helm, you bet, taxes and taxes and taxes and higher and more control government.

Obama is a petty politician who will do what is good for him politically. It doesn’t matter what he says now because he says now “what is politically expedient now”. The new politics is to use your words every way possible without having a track record of anything.
The pundits who extol his virtues are either down right partisan hacks or the same fools who would buy Hitler’s propaganda.

The only reason Obama gave an anti-war speech is because he was in front of an anti-war crowd. If he was giving a speech in Iran, he would be denouncing the US. Look at his associations. The anti-war terrorist associates like William Ayers and Rev. Wright. What do you expect him to do? After all, representing South side Chicago, what political risks he carried making that speech? He once said that there is no difference between his position and Bush’s position. What about that?
He is a political opportunist and a conniving politician who gives typical politicians a bad name.

Frankly, I don’t care how POLITICALLY risky his tax increases are. Tax increases are the LAST thing Americans need right now. I knew this was coming—how else would Obama pay for all his promises of change like giveaways, student loans with 0% interest, welfare and aid for the unemployed and poor urban areas, free health insurance for low-income families, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Obama has made so many promises, lied so many times that he doesn’t know what he stands for other than ‘change.’ Look it up, people. Change doesn’t necessarily mean for the better. And a tax increase is a change for the worse.
OBAMA = CHANGE = NO GOOD.

Under Obama everything will be free, so why would anyone work? And certainly, why would anyone work harder than they already do in order to elevate themselves to earning over $250,000? Why would anyone gamble on starting a business that (egads!!) might grow into multi-million dollar company employing thousands of workers? Where’s the incentive? The government will take care of all of us by taking from those filthy rich people who don’t deserve what they’ve earned. Chill out! Good times!

Obama’s tax hikes are all political posturing and campaign pillow-talk. For the most part, things will continue on as they are (not that they aren’t already broken). All presidents’ abilities are limited (or kept in check) by the cooperation of Congress.
Congress…they are the biggest road-blocks to tax reform (and pretty much forward progress) – which is what we need the most. A national retail sales tax would fix our economy; not tax hikes. A bill for it has been introduced to the H.O.R. several times, but it is never allowed to come up for a vote. There is one out there right now sitting and rotting in the house.
If you want a real solution to our economic problems ask your representatives to even allow a vote on HR 25.

If Obama takes away Pres. Bushe’s tax cuts, that is raising taxes, see when you lower something then raise – that is raising the taxes, that means an average family of 4 making 50,000 dollars a year will pay 3,000 dollars more in taxes under Obama!!
That is a TAX HIKE for everyone, also those who are tax exempt under 20,000 will start paying because the level will change that under 13,000 will only be exempt!!

HP Boston, sorry but your income tax liabilities are totally incorrect.
You have taken the total income (after deductions & exemptions) that falls within a particular tax bracket and multiplied that by the FULL percentage for that tax bracket. EXAMPLE: For 2008 the single individual making $75,000, you assessed the full 25% of the $75,000 to get $18,750 for the tax liability. It does not work that way.
In reality, that single individual will pay:
10% up to $8,025;
15% between $8,025-$32,550;
25% between $32,550-$78,850.
The actual tax liability would be $15,094.
Here are the true tax liabilities for your graphics (married couples filing jointly):
McCAIN (no changes) — 2008 tax rates:
Single making 30K – tax $4,099
Single making 50K – tax $8,844
Single making 75K – tax $15,094
Married making 60K- tax $8,198
Married making 75K – tax $11,438
Married making 125K – tax 23,938
OBAMA — 2000 tax rates
(reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts)
Single making 30K – tax $4,988
Single making 50K – tax $10,588
Single making 75K – tax $17,931
Married making 60K – tax $11,100
Married making 75K – tax $15,300
Married making 125K – tax $29,871

How can America trust anything he says?
Obama has a new program starting just about every week and our taxes will have to pay for them.
Look at his past–enormous earmarks and millions of dollars spent on his pet projects. Some going to his wife’s employer and millions to his shady pastor friends.

Nice try getting us to believe there will be NO net affect of allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire and raising taxes on the 4.9% of the population. Nice try. No cigar. We aren’t stupid out here in fly over country, ABC. We KNOW this will affect EVERYONE in some form or fashion. The return of a $500 per child tax credit (from what is now $1000.00 per child) is a biggie that will affect EVERY family w/kids out there that files a tax return…and that’s just the beginning of the affects. They are too numerous to list on this reply box.

As I said during the primary battle, Obama’s economic plan can be summed up in two words: MORE TAXES.
Obama’s plan to fix Social Security–Raise Taxes.
Obama’s plan to fix Medicare–Raise Taxes.
Obama’s plan to provide prescription drugs–Raise Taxes.
Obama’s plan to provide reduced or free college tuition–Raise Taxes.
Obama’s plan to generate greener energy–Raise Taxes.
And, the list goes on and on and on…

Sweden is one of the most generous welfare states. The Swedes enjoy “free” public schooling; “free” university schooling; health care at “nominal” fees; “free” medicine after an annual expenditure (one source has approximately $150); generous pensions, unemployment benefits; sick leave; highly subsidized child care; senior citizen care; even theater and other leisure activities; and the list goes on… With a population of just over 9 million people Sweden is able to provide these “free” entitlements because EVERYONE pays about 60% of their earnings in taxes (combined income tax, payroll tax and value-added taxes).
So here we have Sen. Obama who wants to provide a laundry list of new “free” entitlements for Americans. The problem is Sen. Obama says that he wants only about 5 million people to pay for these new “free” entitlements for our country of over 300 million people. Even if the top 5 million wage earners paid 100% of their income in federal income taxes it WILL NOT pay for all of these new entitlements.

Shegirl, with all due respect, you have that backwards. The poor and the middle class have been brainwashed by the socialists into believing that the “wealthy” owe them everything. The socialists don’t really care about the poor and the middle class. Instead the socialists only care about gaining and maintaining their own power over the poor and the middle class at the expense of the “wealthy.”

Senator Obama bragged about his Mom getting food stamps so she could afford to send him to a expensive private school. This was after she should have earned a degree and been able to find a job. Is this socialism or not??? I think that is what Obama wants for a few selected Americans. With all his new hand-outs proposed, somebody has to pay the bill and that will be everyone, not just those making over $250,000 a year. Remember, the federal tax on gasoline, cable TV, telephone, and a thousand hidden federal taxes. We pay taxes when we don’t realize we are paying taxes.
Posted by: Mary | July 8, 2008, 2:26 pm 2:26 pm
Most Americans don’t understand taxation, especially how the different income categories are taxed. Basically, everyone pretty much gets taxed at around the same rate, up until it hits a ‘tax ceiling’ of about $200,000. After that, no further tax is levied. So an earner making $200k is taxed at the same rate as someone making 50 million dollars. What winds up happnening, is a shortfall in federal revenue because the guy who made 50 million didn’t pay his fair share of the tax, and it winds up coming out of everyone else’s pockets in the form of.. you guessed it.. higher taxes. Bought off politicians typically employ doublespeak and misinformation to convince voters that none of this can be true.. but it most certainly is the truth: one need only pick up any IRS tax booklet and look at the tax tables to witness the horror for themselves.
Posted by: Robert | July 8, 2008, 8:12 pm 8:12 pm
Robert, so you are saying a single individual who earns $50,000,000 and pays $17,478,597 in federal income tax isn’t paying his fair share? If this individual lives in NY he would pay an additional $3,847,453 in state income tax. That would be a total of $21,326,050 or 42.65% of his income in federal and state income tax. And that doesn’t even include his property taxes.
The truth is the top 25% of the nation’s wage earners, pay 86% of the total federal income tax revenue. THAT IS MORE THAN A FAIR SHARE!
Posted by: James Danley | July 8, 2008, 10:07 pm 10:07 pm
I am all for Obama’s tax plan. Can’t wait to see the rich start paying their fair share.
Posted by: becky | Jul 7, 2008 5:59:27 PM
The rich will still be ahead of the game. If Obama eliminates those tax cut they simply revert by to when Clinton was in office. Plus the rich still have 7 – 8 years worth of cash from those cuts. So future tax liabilities will be paid from some of that money.
Posted by: brigitte | July 8, 2008, 11:48 pm 11:48 pm
Another front until he changes his mind. Again. I guess that’s what the change mantra was all about, Obama being able to flip flop in important decisions and calling it change instead of flip flopping!

I make under 25,000 a year and was recently laid off and received $3600 serverence pay and with taxes taken out cleared $2228.00 that is 40% so multiply that by 52 oh yeah the rich don’t pay..RIGHT…
Posted by: Larry | July 9, 2008, 10:28 am 10:28 am
Everyone who pays income taxes will pay more if Obama is elected by the simple fact that will not renew the tax cuts from 2003, in which every income bracket had a cut. Therefore everybody’s taxes will go up. McCain has promised to renew the 2003 reduced rates.
Posted by: Gary | July 11, 2008, 4:28 pm 4:28 pm
High marginal rates, especially if the “payroll tax” of 12.6% is added on the top will discourage job creation. Even the “socialist” Europeans quietly backed down their top rates. Under Clinton, the top marginal rate was less than 40%. The state tax rate gets added on top of this. The states with the largest job creation such as Texas have zero or very low income tax rates. The evacuees from Katrina have landed jobs in Texas.

When they finally get around to taking the cap off of Social Security taxes, I fully expect them to raise the rate as well.
But you can’t tax you way out of the Social Security problem.
Total liabilities $66,000,000,000,000.00
Total assets in US $59,000,000,000,000.00

For people who think Obama and the tax hikes are good for America look at Britain where Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and his ilk have systematically destroyed the country with red tape, huge tax increases, stealth taxes and ‘free stuff’ for the poor. What has h.appened is low productivity, everyone pays more. Anyone who can is leaving (I did) to live in a country where I am not systematically cleaned out. Florida appeals because its relatively low tax. Raise them to European levels and all the higher earners and job CREATORS will leave. What will be the result – huge numbers of jobs lost, less tax overall paid and a deep depression. Learn from socialist Europe – it DOES Not work unless you are already poor and never intend to work. So let us all PAY for the lazy bums who dont want to work and vote for the socialist regime! The grass is not always greener on the other side.

Quite, simply put another liberal politician(Obama)trying to disguise his social platform as needed change. What we are seeing is classic class envy and wealth redistribution of our country’s hardest working businesses and individuals. America will never maintain it’s greatness, if all we choose to do is reward mediocrity and laziness.

It is this type of political spending that got us in trouble. The rich (as defined by our president) is making over $250k. Are you kidding me? Based on what I can see, and the additional taxes I will have to pay. I will have to lay off 3 people that work for me. My gardener, housekeeper, and sec. Tell me again how this creates jobs? It just cost 3, and many more to come. Not to mention, with the increase in Capital gains, I am not willing to pay the additional rate. Thus, the $3MM we average in buying and selling properly, will come to an end. Costing even more jobs. We pay contractors about $500K per year on fix up and such. The way I see it, we will lose another 6-11% of the work force before we see a turn around.
And one can only imagine that with the decrease in tax revenue that the government will get, the Dems will want to again raise taxes.
Maybe they should look at the law of diminishing returns. Yes, increase the tax rate, and the amount of tax collected actually decreases. This is bad….. bad.. bad.. .bad.
