Just Hours Later, Obama Campaign Uses Berlin Speech to Raise Campaign Cash
Shortly after 6 pm Central time — just a few hours after Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, gave his speech in Berlin, which his campaign insisted was not political — his campaign manager, David Plouffe, sent out a fundraising solicitation using the speech to raise campaign cash.
"As you may have heard, Barack has been in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia this week," reads the email, with a big red "DONATE" sign. "Today, he spoke in Berlin, Germany. In a city where a wall once divided the free from the oppressed, he talked about tearing down the walls that divide all peoples so we can address our common problems — the threats of terrorism and nuclear weapons, global warming and genocide, AIDS and poverty. Watch Barack’s historic speech and share it with your friends."
The letter offers a link to the video and asks recipients to please "forward this email to your friends, family, and colleagues."
This is certainly going to be used as ammunition for those critics who wondered about the true purpose of this "non political" trip.
- jpt
UPDATE: The Obama campaign takes issue with my description of its email with its big, red "DONATE" button as a "fundraising soliciation." The campaign, which has raised more money through the internet than any other campaign in world history, says the purpose of this email, the "DONATE" button notwithstanding, was for folks to see the speech and share it with their friends.
(When you click on that DONATE button, I might add, you’re taken to this webage which reads: "Make your donation online…Make your donation using the secure form below…$25 $100 $500 $2,300
$50 $250 $1,000 Other: $ …Credit Card: Visa MasterCard American Express Discover…Donating Offline: If you would prefer to contribute by mail, send a check to: Obama for America, P.O. Box 802798, Chicago, IL 60680…Donating Monthly: Click here to make a recurring donation….Americans Abroad: Click here to make a donation.)
The campaign calls the above blog entry "misleading." You be the judge.

They don’t even ask for money in the email, they just have a donate button. Kinda like they have a donate button in EVERY email for EVERY campaign. What sort of criticism could you possibly level at this? Should they be making it harder for people who WANT to donate by hiding the button?

Nodifferent than say the McCain campaign. But what the heck-in the supposed issue of press fairness in the mainstream media, we will have to see items like this until election day but I sure hope and pray that more nitpicking can go on against John McCain and his campaign also in the supposed fairness of this Presidential election campaign.

McCain dared him to go abroad.
He did and not only is his trip a SUCCESS, that gaffe that Repubs are waiting for has failed to materialise.

So what. Voters do not care about process. At a time when people are losing jobs, losing houses, losing their retirement savings, unable to fill their car with gas, unable to buy groceries, this is a petty non-issue. The media is more out of touch than the politicians with what people care about.

I’m still trying to figure out why mccain confused the Packers with the Steelers 2 weeks ago while speaking to a Pittsburgh crowd. He said he used the names of the famous Steelers Defensive line of the 1970′s, too bad these guys weren’t even playing when mccain was being interrogated. He is either going senile or he was trying to pull one over on the Pittsburgh crowd, either way this is BAD news for mc-more-war. You can check out the article by going into google and typing “mccain steelers” and picking the first link.

It doesn’t matter what Obama does. The adoring, secular, liberal masses have finally found their saviour. The only thing I have against Obama is the way his followers (including and especially the media) regard him as some kind of messiah and the way he (since winning the nomination)has been soaking it up and taking advantage of it. Even his own campaign staff is starting to get nervous about that, publicly saying that he’s not a miracle worker and people shouldn’t set their expectations of him so high. It doesn’t matter. His followers are PT Barnum’s dream audience. Obama will bring them a flea circus and they’ll clap in delight at the fleas.

Once againg the worlds first class liar has been on the world stage. I really don’t want to be a citizen of the world just yet, I want to be a citizen of the United States of America. If Obama wants to be a citizen of the world find a country that will let him take it in that direction. Iran maybe, how about some little place in Africa, or an Island in the Pacific that he seems to think is going under water soon.
All I heard from him today is how many mistakes America has made, how we have done very little for the world, to listen to the speech one would get the impression that the German people flew the planes for the Berlin airlift not U S pilots. I find him to be shallow, hollow, and without a new thought in his head. If Karl Marx was still alive I’m sure they would have much in common. Vote for him for president, not in a million years because I love this country and I want to leave it for my children and grandchildren in a fashion that is free from the government telling them what to do. Obama wants to be the worlds nanny, and he just “ain’t” qualified.

I am here as a Citizen of the World, not as a campiagning President. But then he scraps going to see our wounded service men and woman, because it wouldn’t be right to visit them as a campaigning president.
If he is a citizen of the world? Does he have more then one citizen. I’d like to see his passport.

Is he showing a picture of the troops? Is he showing a picture of German leaders? Is he only showing the many people that are approving him in Germany? They’re waving the American flags all around the speech.
There is no “politics” being played here, he’s only conveying the speech given.
Posted by: Chris | July 24, 2008, 8:09 pm 8:09 pm

Posted by: Belle Starr | July 24, 2008, 8:09 pm 8:09 pm
If you’re on Obama’s mailing list you get “solicitations” from David Plouffe all the time. He doesn’t need to send Obama all the way to Germany to feel justified asking for money from past donors, so that’s definitely not the “true purpose” of the trip. They’re running a campaign, meaning they need cash and lots of it. Using speeches and special appearances to get voters excited enough about Obama that they’ll contribute towards making him the next president is not shameful–its the principal behind every modern campaign for the presidency.

And is he square on the fact that Canada doesnt have a President? Shall I continue?

Not really a surprise, folks. We knew Obama was lying the minute he told the crowd he was there as a “citizen” and not a politician even though his official campaign organized and funded this event. Kind of like, I was on the Senate Banking Committee…. or it was my bill that passed through the Senate Banking Committee. Both statements Obama knew to be untrue the moment he uttered them which qualifies them as lies.

If you think the war should continue indefinitely, while we spend $10,000,000,000 a month, and you think that bush has done well with the economy then mc-more-war is your man. He said, “I hope I said 100,000 people the first time instead of 100 million. I understand I said there were 57 states today. It’s a sign that my numeracy is getting a little, uh.” At that point, an aide cut him off and ushered journalists out. Before he could mis-speak again?)

If the speech was not political, why does it appear on his campaign site at all? If the speech is not political why not publish it without the Donate sign? Some here suggest that some Obama supporters are incompetent to figure out how to donate to the campaign on the same website that contains the speech. So they need the extra help! Well, so what? if the speech is not meant to be political why even think about raising money with it?
The Donate button appears on every page on Obama’s website because every campaign website is meant to be political and to raise funds. That’s what campaign websites are for.

Almost everything positive they say comes with a “but”! But of course they only want to promote OBAMA huh… I wonder if that was what they were doing as they attended Mccains BBQ? Yeah you know YOU TUBE… seems like tons of media at that fabulous function to me… Maybe if McCain focused a bit more on a positive message versus a negative week of OBAMA Bashing…I might read up on him more…Seriously people wake up, educate yourselves, and do some more research!

There was no direct request for a donation with the e-mail. I’m not sure why you’re trying to make a story out of a non-story. The message to supporters was not a request for funds. What a hypocrite standing at the Berlin wall? He needs to quit making speeches and fulfill his Senate term. He is definitely full of himself.

I think Obama gave McCain’s campaign speech in Germany: We need a bigger army, we will police the world, we will continue to have billions spent on foreign to “win hearts and minds abroad” as we did when there was a soviet union. Heck, NEOCONS could have wrote the speech.
But no …
Instead of the US alone revifing the Cold War, we will do it co-operatively with Europe and other countries and solve poverty, hunger, civil wars, etc. in the process–together.
And what motivates this vision of Obama as President of the World? Ego? Of course. Incipient megalomania? Sure sounds, looks, and feels like it. But mainly that evangelical marxism so much a part of Obama. Collectivise the world in “perfecting” pursuits. I could almost hear “the internationale”, jackbooted youth marching to “rebuild the instructure of the world”, as those Lenin and Maoist words like “struggle” and “equality” rolled Obama’s marxist tongue.
I haven’t heard a more warmongering, populace inspiring speech in decades. Yep, McCain is probably green with envy instead of planning an attack on Obama’s plan to rule the world.

The real straight-talker, John Murtha said that the Presidency is no place for an OLD man. There’s a reason they make pilots retire at age 60. mc-more-war needs to retire with his millionaire wife. Hey Tapper John, in case you didn’t know (which I’m sure you do because you danced down this idiotic road before), the “Donate” button is on EVERY e-mail message the Obama camp sends out. When they are soliciting money from supporters, they explicitly ask you in the e-mail for money. Did they do that here? Your article is indeed misleading. And even if he were asking for money, SO WHAT? His supporters, you know, the people who are going to donate to him, loved his Berlin speech. McCain meets Gordon Brown and hosts fundraiser in London? No comment by “jpt”. Obama sends out an email using his normal email template? Scandal! OMG!

Thanks for the update, Jake. But perhaps you should also quote the LA Times, because the real money is not being raised through the Internet, that’s a front:
LA Time 6/13
“Of the $20.3 million Obama’s joint fundraising committees amassed in June, 86%, or $17.6 million, came in chunks of $5,000 or more; 64% came in increments of $28,500 or more, campaign finance reports filed over the weekend show.”

It’s pretty disheartening to see how people suspend judgment with Obama. Obviously he’s a gifted orator. This guy may wind up being a great president – or he may be a smooth-talking lightweight that gets in way over his head. Remember, five years ago he was sitting in the Illinois State Senate so there’s some logic to thinking he’s the latter. Supporters are putting hopes on him that his resume just doesn’t support. They should step back and think coldly about who is best to run this country. And they need to remember that it’s always wise to be cynical about all politicians.

From BizJournal:
“In June 2008, Democrat Barack Obama raised more money than Republican John McCain in McCain’s home state of Arizona.
Obama raised $432,000 compared to McCain’s take of $313,000, reports the Arizona Republic.”

Wow, dont know where to start with this. I’ve read every comment so far and am absolutely stunned by the ignorance of some people.
If you cared to do any research at all Barack was not ‘raised as a Muslim’. His mother wasn’t religious, however believed in the guiding principles of all religion, he not only attended a Madrassa while living in Indonesia, but also a Catholic school. His mother was never a Muslim, and while his father was, he had left the religion after childhood for the same reasons most people leave organized religion.
And really my man? This is what you consider to be news? I hope you seriously sit down and think about your career and whether its the right one for you. No where in the email does it say ‘hey you! donate money to us because barack spoke in berlin’, there is simply a small red ‘donate’ button at the very end of the email, after the signature btw. Report real news, be honest, be fair, dont just fill up space with the easiest story to write without any thought about it.

Isn’t it GREAT to see an average American really make it big. Obama was raised by his single-mother with the help of his grandparents. He worked Hard, got a good education, and turned down large sums of money to go to work for the average American. What a great story. He raised his large sums of money for his campaign, not thru big corporate donors like many others, but thru average Americans giving $10 or $20 at a time. I suspect he is going to go down in history as one of the great presidents of all time. Obama will be Great in 2008!!!.

Obama is a charlatan. With the exception of his brief stint as a community organizer in Chicago, he has spent his entire adult life and career either in school or running for an office.
Any politician/candidate who needs to be “handled” to the degree that Obama’s handlers have, has no business running for political office. Since the end of the primaries, Obama’s handlers have carefully staged every photo-op, interview, and press statement for the sole purpose of propping up a glamorized facade of experience and leadership. Every American who cares for this country should be asking, “Why? Why do Obama’s handlers need to shield him?”
Wake-up America–our country cannot afford another rookie President.

And, Belle, have you forgotten that it was Bush’s mission, the War on Terror to get bin Laden and the 9-11 terrorists who were somehere in Pakistan or Afganistan? If the Obama campaign is guilty of anything it is certainly guilty of being overprotective and over apologetic in many instances. But is that so surprising after seeing what has happened in the past two elections. People dont want to see another democrat lose the election to swiftboating. So I really cant blame them for being so protective of where he appears and what he says during the campaign.

The Obama campaign regularly sends out emails containing updates on the candidate’s speeches, appearances or whatever. The donate button is ALWAYS there. I have a feeling it’s part of an email template they use.
Of course the speech was political. Every thing a candidate does up until the election is political. But so what? Why the moral outrage?
Throughout the election season the Obama campaign has used not just calls for donations but also videos of the candidate speaking, reminders of public gatherings, special offers and various other announcements to spread its message. This is nothing new.

The true purpose of this trip? To fluff up Obama’s qualifications, to make him appear presidential, and of course, to raise more money from his supporters.
Obama needn’t worry too much about money though. Part of this trip was financed with taxpayers’ money, so maybe only half of the cost is from his campaign. He’ll easily raise millions more from all those lobbyists and big corporations, their employees and their families and friends. Rich, powerful people will always be there for Obama as he prance around the world playing basketball and avoiding talking to wounded troops.

The difference between average tax-payers and a politician:

I am having difficulty understanding your criticism. I find this notice innovative and an impressive campaign donation income program. I applaud Barack Obama . This young junior senator, claimed to be too inexperienced, has proven excellent leadership of campaign management and finances. His staff choices are excellent.
I received this email and many others in past. Each has always had an option to donate. This situation is no different. I find these email updates quite interesting and keep me update. Reminds me to go to his website or review news articles. Also reminds me of a big fact – it takes money to conduct a good campaign. I can give a little over time as I can afford. I prefer to see this type of request for donations over public finance. This is sort of a personal touch. A person may give or not give. Choice is always there. If you don’t want to give money- that is fine. Touching bases with his past supporters with updates is wonderful! So far he has gained tremendous support and campaign donations do indicate this fact. Donations quite good last month.
I won’t even get into public financing. That is loaded with problems considering all the Republican 527′s money that will be supporting John McCain as well.
I do donate q month or q other month because of these friendly emails.
I am educated and aware of the issues this campaign. I have attempted to choose the candidate I like wisely.
I will be voting for Barack Obama. Go Obama!

CA_ty,
We had a budget surplus when Clinton left office – due primarily to the Republican “Contract with America” and the huge revenue coming into the treasury from capital gains on tech stocks. However, the national debt was about $6 trillion. Then the “Tech Bubble” burst and we had the 9/11 attacks which devastated the economy. And the world always “respects” weak U.S. presidents while despising strong ones.

You are correct to point this out Jake Tapper. Thank you for being one of very few reporters who take Obama to task for anyting.
The 24/7 fawning of most media is sickening.
The Obamarama has been a media driven illusion.
Despite the best efforts of the media, Obama is falling in the polls. Yippee!
Obama is simply unqualified and certainly not Presidential material. The Dems should nominate Hillary at the convention next month. Hillary Clinton remains the best candidate, most qualified and most electable. The Dems would be foolish to cast her aside.
Obama made serious mistakes in his overseas travels. Obama is NOT President, he has overstepped his bounds going to a foreign country and asking for their “troops” to assist ours in a War we are currently involved in. Outrageous. Obama did this in Berlin today! It’s highly inappropriate and Obama should be held accountable.
In Iraq, Obama overstepped his bounds by meeting with Malike and disclosing the conversation. Obama is meddling in foreign affairs.
It could be a violation of the Logan Act. It could be treasonous. He could possibly face serious charges.
Congress should hold Obama accountable. They did not fail to correctly chastise former President Jimmy Carter when he inappropriately acted overseas.

I see that JT is still shilling for McCain. How sad that so many people feel they have to dredge up every trivial objection to Obama, I presume because they can’t think of much that’s inspiring about their own candidate. McCain has made more gaffes than the three stooges and Norm Crosby combined, and all these folks can talk about is that Obama is “inexperienced.” Well, okay…McCain has experience, but not at being president, or even at commanding troops. For me, there’s no comparison between the two: Obama is smarter, Obama is a better leader, and Obama is far less likely to start WWIII.

The Dems are really blowing 2008, it’s not too late, however, when the DNC convention is held in late August they should do the right thing and nominate the best candidate, Hillary Clinton!!

The media failed to note that a rock concert by Patrice and RAemonn preceded the Obama speech in Berlin today. That would explain all the “young people” in the audience. The media also failed to note the free rock concert by The Decemberists in Portland, Oregon prior to the Obama speech there.
Free concerts, free food, cash rewards, all work wonders for a candidate with an obscene amount of money to throw around. Young people and others who lack funds with lots of time on their hands are willing participants when the offer is right.
Voters and superdelegates are for sale.

McSame is and will be a danger, not only to himself, but to the country and the rest of the world as he seems to be sliding into dementia. He seems to think that he is the saviour who will save mankind, even as he is the moses who wrote all these in stone.

Well, believe what you wish.
The fact is, I am a lifelong Democrat. Not only am I a Dem ticket voter, but I am an activist, contributor, volunteer and former paid staffer. I have worked on countless campaigns.
I am a centrist Democrat. That’s why I love the Clintons. Most Americans are moderates. The left wing nuts and the right wing nuts have taken over both parties. It’s not good.
One reason I don’t like Obama is the fact that he continually attempted to denigrate a former two term President Bill Clinton of his OWN party! That’s unacceptable to me. Obama’s attempts to paint Bill and Hillary Clinton as racists is outrageous. To attempt to paint all anti-Obama voters as racist is offensive and inaccurate. Did it ever occur to the “chosen one” that WE feel he’s simply NOT qualified to be President of the United States???
Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton are the greatest political success story of the Democratic party since FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt. Bill is the ONLY two term Dem to be re-elected since FDR! Wow! We should celebate this each and every chance we get. Bill left this nation in GREAT shape with a balanced budget and a budget surplus! Wow! We should celebate this each and every chance we get.
The real Democratic party base wants Hillary to be the nominee. Obama is being shoved down our throats by a fawning media. The media will NOT decide this election, the people WILL!
I have NO doubt Hillary Clinton WILL be a great President one day. If not now, then in 2012.
In 1932 the Democratic party convention was held and FDR went into the convention 90 delegates short of the 2/3 majority needed to win the nomination. He finally won on the 4th ballot in a contentious convention. The Democratic party survived and thrived.
Neither Sen. Clinton nor Sen. Obama go to the convention with the necessary majority needed to secure the nomination. Yet the DNC wants to subvert the Democratic process by keeping Sen. Hillary Clinton from being placed in nomination. Sen. Clinton has not released her delegates. The superdelegate who will decide this nomination can vote for whomever they believe is the most electable, most qualified, best candidate for the general election in NOvember. That candidate is and shall remain, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The DNC should open up this upcoming convention and make it a real Democratic process. Call, write and DEMAND that the Democratic party allow both Hillary and Obama to be placed in nomination, speeches by and for both, both names on ballots and allow votes to be cast, and gasp, COUNT ALL THE VOTES! This would be real democracy in action! What are the DNC and Obama afraid of? Falling polls numbers, that Obama is unelectable?
My grandmother whose first vote was in 1932 for FDR had a picture of FDR on her wall. My mother, whose first vote was for JFK, had his picture on the wall.
I come from a strong military family. My family members have served in every branch of the armed services. My grandparents are buried in a National Cemetary.
I LOVE my country. I want my Democratic party back, on the right track. Voter disenfranchisement will NOT be tolerated. The mistreatment of women, of Hillary Clinton will NOT be tolerated. Shame on Barack Obama, shame on the DNC for allowing the continual interjection of racism, sexism, classism, and voter disenfranchisement into this 2008 campaign debacle.
The Democratic party understands two things, money and votes, WE have the power to with hold BOTH. DO SO.
“No self respecting woman should wish for or work for the success of party which ignores her sex” Susan B. Anthony
If we don’t speak out now, WHEN???

Aren’t you on the wrong channel? You home is further along the dial and it goes by the name FOX. Since you don’t even pretend to be impartial.
Implying the trip is a fundraiser is a typical Repub. attempt to put a negative spin. McCain and the Repub. party has been pushing for Obama to visit the Middle east, with the hopes that a mistake would cost him votes. But since things seem to be going well, we can hear the panic in your voice. Similar to the shrill coming out of Hannity and Rush.
You can sense all the cynicism for anything Obama and longing for McCain. In eight year, you Republican buddies have drive this country into the ground. But our country will rise again and Obama is the one to do it.
He will be America’s president but he will be a world leader and not the goofball we have in the White House now.

Obama plans to be president by acting like the president, not doing any debates or unrehersed events with political opponents or hostile journalists. Access to the man is strickly monitored. Obama-campaign wants to buy the election.
For Obama lobbyist to try and buy the election they have a problem. Obama is expensive. He used 3:1 and sometimes 4:1 more cash than Hillary Clinton and he still lost 9 of the 14 last primaries. Dems superdelegates may think Obama is a luxury they can afford, but as I am a PUMA and I don’t care for a candidate who act if the election is already over.

Joyce -
You are the victim of a marketing campaign. McCain invited Obama to go to Iraq to see what was going on over there. Everything you see is what the campaign is letting you see. Every meeting was without the media so you are getting was is told by the campaign.
Obama not a penny from me. I see right through this very well orchastrated and calculated campaign. Every Obama speech is how bad we are as a Americans and everything we have done wrong. He never talks about all the good our country does or have done.
You can have your speech prepared candidate. Listen carefully when he has to answer a question or address a statement that is unscripted.
This whole thing is a joke. I believe (maybe) not before the election but this guy skyrockted to fame and notarity but he will come crashing down just as hard. History always repeats itself.

Just A Few Thawts …
1.) If, as one poster claims, “all young Germans speak fluent English”, then why the lack of applause? If they love him so so much and wished to communicate that, wouldn’t they applaud wildly? Young German school kids are given a choice of which second language to study. English hasn’t been terribly popular for years.
2.) If, as he claims, he is a “citizen of the world”, why doesn’t Obambi speak a second language?
3.) No visit to Ramstein und Landstuhl? Not a political event, but send money anyhow?

What even happens in Nov you have to admit that he has accomplished much more than expected. And that is because his team knows how to run a campaign.

Obama’s Berlin speech makes it clear that he’s just using the American election to skip on to King Of The World. But that’s the Obama way.
Skip from Street Organizor to State Senator by clearing the competition.
Skip from State Senator to U.S. Senator by getting credit for the hard work of your fellow senators.
Skip from mere months in the U.S. Senate to Presidential Candidate by overstating his achievements but not doing any actual hard work.
Obama is all show. But I do believe he has plans for the world. After all, it’s good to be King. Too bad he can’t just run for that and leave America alone.

Obama is where he is because his team knew how to rig the caucuses, raise money, and craft speeches to hypnotize the masses. But let’s just single out one accomplishment from these three: raising money.
Obama has raised more money than any political candidate ever. Look at the polls; shouldn’t he be at least 20 points ahead with all the money spent, not to mention free media adoration publicity? Yes he should. Obama can’t seal the deal.

The great philosopher Paul Simon said it best, “A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.” The people posting here have already made their choice, and now they’re partisans trying to convince others to dislike one candidate, never arguing FOR the policies of their own candidate. America is the best country in the world, but our political discourse sucks. And Jake Tapper is intent on keeping it that way.

maingirl, it’s Obama who is laughing at the American people, you just can’t see it yet. There’s no such thing as a free lunch, and a tax increase on the wealthy won’t begin to pay for all the bread and manna Obama has promised in order to win votes.
But that aside, he lacks experience, exhibits weakness at every turn, is a blamer and a denier. We’ve had eight years of an inept POTUS, why on earth would we rush to elect another one?

I donated before the speech was even given. After John Sydney McCain III “dared” Obama to travel I was impressed by the young man meeting with our troops and the foreign leaders and the obvious connections he is already making. Quite a contrast to the Bush years and by extension a McCain administration. John has promised to keep going it alone and still wants us to be an occupation force in Iraq.

Ha, so Obama gets 2 rock bands to suck in a big crowd in German, yuk, yuk! What a poser!! Even if they had been there to see Obama, remember, these people idolize David Hasselhoff–meaning their judgement is extremely suspect, LOL. This guy is a laughingstock as a politician and the silly season media are the keystone cops to his fake grandeur.

Yeah. He wants that, too.

This whole “Please LOVE ME World” tour is a BIG turn off…honestly, I dislike him more and more each day. This guy is so amazingly narcissistic(sp?). I just can’t take his speeches and his affectation. When he said “People of Germany..” I immediatley thought of Yoko Ono and her “People of Earth..

he gets big crowds by piggybacking or opening for concerts sometimes. During the primaries, when Hillary was to give a speech, his campaign was offering Dave Matthews tickets to draw a huge crowd and attention away from Hillary (my pick for Pres). I am not impressed that Europeans love this guy…hey, the French love Jerry Lewis so they should really fawn over this goofball.

I was 19 once. I would have gone to a free concert to get drunk and meet chicks. Then afterwards our slanted media would have portrayed me as an Obama supporter.

Obama is raising tons of cash and getting enourmous media coverage with this trip. Still, McCain is close in the polls. Rasmussen and Gallup has it a virtual tie. It’s amazing that a 71 year-old man, with no support from his base, a damaged Republican brand and limited media coverage has done so well. It didn’t seem possible a few weeks back, but McCain is making this a close race. I just don’t get it.

Thommy Thompson—your beloved Obama refused to visit our troops and their families in Iraq. When he was in Afghanistan, he refused to even greet the troops (speaking only with some generals and ignoring–i.e., not even acknowledging their presence–the troops who wanted to meet with him). Here, in the states, he has been invited to speak in townhall meetings at several military bases and has turned down all invitations.

For all of you Republicans that find fault in Obama’s thunderous and well received speech in Berlin. I say get a life, my candidate has made me very proud. Stop attacking Sen Obama for attack sake, it makes Sen McCan’t seem like an Old Angry Man. McCain supporters should be spending more time trying to explain their candidates policies and positions, or do they not know where the flip flop “Lying” Kings actually stand. Please report on your candidates trips to Canada, South America, Sausage Shop in Berlin Ohio and a grocery store. Pretty boring, just like McLame’s policies.
Why does the Republican Party keep trying to Dumb the Presidency down?
Could it be because McOld finished 894th out 899 at the Naval academy.
The world has seen what can happen in the hands of a C student (W) and McCain has admitted that has GPA would be closer to a D-.

Independent, whether you agree with his policies or not, it’s clear that McCain loves America and puts his country above all else. Obama puts himself and his ego above all else (can you even count all the people he’s thrown under his bus?) and no one is quite sure where America ranks on his list of priorities – is she number one in his mind or just another country in his vast world empire?

“It didn’t seem possible a few weeks back, but McCain is making this a close race. I just don’t get it.”
Axelrod and Plouffe are underestimating the Red vs Blue divide. They drank the kool-aid from the Internet Kids that it is an irresistable force (note all the borg references in Nat’s emails).
The truth is America remains a conservative country that seldom goes left of center for very long. Bill Clinton was a centrist and that got him elected twice. A&P as grocers of change believed they could use the left wing of the Democratic Party and thug tactics to force Senator Clinton out of the race and they were successful. They believed that they could quickly reposition Obama to the center and get her supporters. So far, they were wrong about this.
Now their campaign is increasing the Obama creep factor: the perception that something is being hidden from the public and it may not be good for America. The European trip is a press success and a sugar high for Obama supporters but it is backfiring in a country deeply suspicious of foreign allies that sabotaged the response to 9/11 after initial support.
Despite our antipathy to the war, the eight years of neocon press had a lasting effect. American baby boomers do not want to lose another war and have aging but precise memories of how movement mavens such as Obama let them down in their youth. They want an executive, not a rock star. They associate such stardom with waste and dissipation in pursuit of meglomania.
A&P may have to reduce slash prices and reduce inventory. Or they may actually have to put Hillary on the ticket if she is willing. I won’t be surprised if she isn’t because at this point, even her support may not overcome the steady rise in discomfort with Obama and the creep factor.

James – you’re a great example of the glassy-eyed followers of Obama. You and your candidate are so far left that your grasping at air to even hang onto the edge of the political spectrum. After alienating moderate Dems, now you’re trying to breed animosity against McCain with name-calling? McBush, McSame, McLame – snore…grow up.
Now you want to rehash Bush the C-student and McCain the ‘failure of the Naval Academy’? Is that the measure of the candidacy? If so, let’s talk about Barry’s teen years – experimenting with various presidential substances?
Get back to the issues and candidates’ records.
Posted by: FishMonger | July 25, 2008, 10:13 am 10:13 am
Of COURSE his speech was political. Obama’s team wants to downplay that, but the reality is he’s not just a “citizen of the world”, but a candidate for President of the United States. His every move, visit, talk, etc., is inherently political. Moreover, I don’t have a problem with him soliciting cash by advertising the success of his visit.

“The truth is America remains a conservative country that seldom goes left of center for very long.”
You’re gonna have to back this one with facts. Every poll of the major issues–economy, foreign policy, the war, etc., favors the democrats. The one issue where republican’s have an advantage is on OCS drilling. About 57% of the American people like the idea on a visceral level.
Of course, it depends on what you mean by conservative. Americans tend to be pragmatic versus ideological, so the whole “conservative” frame versus “liberal” frame doesn’t apply.

Jessica and Ellen, regardless of what you want…what anyone wants…what I want…there is an enemy out there that is so determined to destroy us and all of Western Civilization, that they are willing to blow themselves up along with dozens of innocent people. You can’t negotiate with this enemy, because they want us dead! Even if we all converted to Islam that wouldn’t be enough. They are even blowing up dozens and hundreds of Muslims who don’t believe in their extremist views of Islam. So you can’t just ignore this jihad that they have against us. It is NOT GOING AWAY until the root of the problem (the Israeli-Palestinian conflict) has been solved and the Muslim schools ban the indoctrination of the their youth with their curricula of hatred towards Israel and Western Civilization. And the only way to begin this is by spreading democracy throughout the Middle East. The grass roots levels of these countries must begin to taste what freedom and prosperity is all about. The change will only occur from the bottom up and through attrition (as the older generations eventually die off). So this change is going to take several generations to come to fruition.

Who cares that Obama stages publicity rallies in Germany? In the meantime, McCain is meeting with Americans in small settings to hear their concerns. Obama is smoke & mirrors. It’s all about his ego. McCain is the true public servant and the patriot to lead us for the next four years.
Posted by: Juju | July 25, 2008, 10:26 am 10:26 am
The polls are the only facts available, Chris. Everything else is anecdotal. With the press and the money spent, Obama should be showing a dramatic increase in support. Instead he is declining.
Candidates don’t own issues. Your response is about the issues. You can come up with many kinds of change that need to be made and people will agree with you, but they vote their emotional perception of a candidate. The very face of Obamamania is creating the Obama Creep Factor. Obama and his supporters are already trying to reduce the impact of the Obama As LightWorker image but the damage is done and his supporters of that ilk are well-intentioned but the very source of the Creep Factor.
Obama is beginning to lose as predicted. America wants a competent leader not a rock star. That is why Hillary was stomping Barack and it too rigging by the DNC to get her to back off. But he is only a presumptive not a nominee and her supporters aren’t rallying to him. The Creep Factor leads them to the conclusion that country is more important than party and they know that America actually does well with a majority Congress and a minority President. There is no credible McCain Creep Factor, just age, and agism isn’t a really powerful force except among the Internet Kids.
A&P have very little time to recover. It will be a hot August night in Denver because by the skillful manipulation of the DNC, the Democrats are starting to lose the one election no one thought they could lose. Now THAT’S historic.

“The truth is America remains a conservative country that seldom goes left of center for very long.”
It is true that the Republican brand is badly damaged and party affiliation is at a low. That does not mean, however, that there are fewer conservatives. Conservatives are still conservatives whether or not they call themselves Republicans. They will not start voting for far left candidates. America remains a center-right country.

Obama is white/black and he’s educated…that’s why some people won’t accept him.
think about it. if you’re the kind of white person who has suffered and failed your whole life and then a privliged, articulate, college educated, young black man comes along and is so popular…how are you going to feel?
that’s what racisim is…the belief that you somehow deserve something better than other people based simply on the color of your skin…that you have a right to a higher social position. “they’re black…how can they afford to live in MY neighborhood?”
there’s too much “us” and “them” mentality in america today…us and the germans, us and the french, us and the red states, us and the blue states, us and the immigrants…
the only way a democratic experiment like america can succeed is if we all work together for the common good. the republican system is counter to this fact.

How come no one in the mainstream media is reporting the fact the reason 200,000 people were there is because they had set up beer tents, free food and hired the most popular band in Germany to perform free. This expose was given by a British Journalist, just like he did the same to fill the stadium on the west coast in May using a band called the Decemberists. All the polls that liberals quote are phony ones done by liberal organizations including the mainstream media who only ask these questions in large cities with a mostly liberal population. I bet if I did a poll here in the midwest, I could manipulate it like these liars who are trying to convince conservatives not to vote.

“Obama is white/black and he’s educated…that’s why some people won’t accept him.”
That argument is the white guilt position. It’s a distraction and it isn’t true. America would vote for Colin Powell without hesitation. If you are saying Obama’s image is alienating the voters, you are right.
The notion that America is a ‘mean’ country and ‘racist’ isn’t exactly an inviting prospect. Have you ever gotten a date by telling the guy he is pimply and has bad breath but hey, you MIGHT be able to change all of that.
It’s negative emotional vectoring. That will lose you the date and Obama the election. He got his initial support with a positive campaign. The race card helped against the Clintons but it can’t be played against the very people you need to win: the voters.
He is TOO much about image and when all the various components of it are taken in aggregate, it creeps a lot of people out because it has an illusory feel to it and that makes them uncomfortable and insecure.
I’m not sure he can overcome that because his arrogance and narcissism ARE who he is and they are on the surface. Taking the American flag off of his jet and replacing it with his Big O is a stupid move but very Obamish.

Wow, we are making sweeping generalizations based on yesterday’s polling?
I think it’s far too early to gauge the impact of Obama’s trip to Europe, particularly since he’s still there. Moreover, the polls have been fluid, but still nationally favor Obama.
I agree with Larry Sabato who favors a climate that will usher in an Obama Presidency. Barring a game changing gaffe, this election is Obama’s to lose.
The 1980 model applies here. You have a new face to the national scene as opposed to an established figure. Polls didn’t break in a dramatic way for Reagan until the final weeks before the election. Once a certain threshold of comfort is passed with Obama, I think the same thing will happen to Obama that it did for Reagan.

I’m beginning to feel sorry for Obama – this staged production in Berlin complete with rock bands, beer, etc. is not going to go over well with the meat and potato crowd in America – his amazing marketing team is a little too slick and I fear he has surrounded himself with sycophants and is beginning to believe all the praise that they heap on him. I fear he will be perceived rightly or wrongly, as too ambitious, too full of himself too ordained to be the savior of the world, not only the USA. It would be interesting to get the real reaction of world leaders – I would bet money that their opinions would be that his performance in Germany was “bad form” and just how would this influence their opinion of him as president.. interesting.

The Obama campaign “takes issue” with anyone who dares to speak the TRUTH as TRUTH is not a feature of this campaign. How long will it be before people realize what the Obama campaign is really all about? It’s certainly NOT about TRUTH. It’s about propaganda, deception and illusion – if people wish to make voting choices on the basis of MISINFORMATION they are acting in an extroadinarily irresponsible manner.
Of course this “world tour” was political – it was a total media stunt aimed at fostering the ILLUSION that Obama has foreign affairs credibility. No, he doesn’t. And of course the email described by JT was aimed 100% of raising money – if it wasn’t, why include a “CONTRIBUTE” button?
David Plouffe and Barack Obama deserve each other – both seem completely incapable of uttering anything which even barely resembles the TRUTH.

Why should he visit the troops or the common citizen in KY? After all doesn’t he want to “remake the world” in 6 days. Obama has much more important work to do.
I miss Hillary Clinton, who is very busy with the every day “little people’s agenda” like fighting cuts in Medicare, protecting the Constitution, and challenging Bush’s effort to remake the US into a patriarchal theocracy. So maybe I am very grateful that she is the Senate keeping an eye on things that matter.

“Race is too big a factor in this country…”
I don’t accept that. I live in the state most associated with racism and I’ve lived through the changes. Racism is like herpes; it won’t go away but it only limits some people some of the time.
There is a very definite cultural divide but it isn’t exclusive. It is just noticeable. The media attempts to make that a racial issue but it isn’t racism per se and it doesn’t divide us as much as give us diversity which is in fact a strength. The problem for Obama is except for surface gestures like the fist bump, he doesn’t represent the black culture nor does he really come from that culture because he wasn’t raised in it. His books reveal a deeply divided self-perception.
Race will not defeat Obama. His campaign’s use of it to defeat Hillary Clinton and his supporters’ use of it to pound on the opposition can contribute to his defeat. But the real danger here is putting this into the mix in a country that tends to swing to political extremes every other election means that in four years the candidates will face an electorate where racial epithets will be acceptable again.
Perhaps all of the cultures will decide that they ‘own’ the N word and use it anyway they see fit. Will that be bad or good? I consider fear of a word to be voodoo worship, so maybe it will be for the good. But because everyone will be using it differently, I’m not so sure about this one.

I like how the Socialists supporting Obama try to turn things around the Libs/Socialist hate the Constitution, they are trying to destroy it, they want to take away peoples rights, but then they try to say it is McCain what a laugh!
Obama said in his speech it was not a campaign stop, oh thats right we can not trust anything Obama says!!
He was not Campaigning remember!!
Oh and How come he could not visit our soldiers!! What a disgrace!! He can go see the soldiers he just can not campaign, oh but thats right he would not of had his employees from the press there!!

Truth Matters, Sen. McCain was referring to the wounded veterans there in Germany. Sen. Obama is a member of the U. S. Senate Committe on Veteran’s Affairs. He should have taken a few minutes to cheer up a few of the wounded veterans–these same veterans who Sen. Obama wants to be their Commander-in-Chief. For someone who is touted as being so smart and having run such a very smart campaign, Sen. Obama blew this one. That tells us his priority and proves his lack of judgment. He just may have kissed the veteran vote good-bye!

Do not back down Jake. This message control has got to stop once and for all. It is absolute, unilateral and, most troubling, all but undetected. Obama’s campaign tactics have been manipulative and disingenous since day one — but there was no media voice to expose them. The electorate has a right to know how Obama has created and managed public perception – and how he attempts to trample dissent in the same way Bush has. This may seem like a very small point — but until the media start pushing back, Obama and his ways will never be known. It is a start anyway.

Axelrod of Evil would sell his own grandmother to get BO the presidency, and BO would throw in everyone he’s thrown under the bus, which is about to include Jake Tapper. Jake, you MUST STOP TELLING THE TRUTH. Truth does not sit well with the Obama campaign. Their constant lying cannot withstand scrutiny. They scuttle into the dark when the light of truth moves in their direction.
The truth is going to save this country.

obama is a FRAUD!!!! – His entire campaign and this trip are staged to perfection – and we are paying for it with our tax $$$$. The media needs to stop all the glory obama and tell the American people the TRUTH about this guy – before it’s too late.
I will never vote for obama – he is an arrogant, radical FRAUD and not qualified to lead our country.

i do have to leave, but i could not let the comment about hillary supporters and puma go unanswered. why does just about everyone assume that all hillary supporters are women and all pro-choice? i happen to be a woman and pro-choice.my two best friends are a male and a female. the male is pro-choice and the female is a right-to-lifer. we are all hillary supporters. we do not vote on one issue alone. many women are not pro-choice. many women vote on the economy and security rather than “womens’ issues”. i believe obama is a threat to national security. i believe mccain is not. i do not believe mccain wants to or would be able to over turn roe vs. wade. i do not believe mccain could single handedly appoint a supreme court judge without congressional approval. besides, six of the nine judges that originally decided roe vs. wade were appointed by republican presidents. surprise!! and with a judge you never know which way they will go just based on past decisions. judges think a lot. another surprise. as to my being a republican, you are partly right. i was a democrat for forty two years and voted straight ticket. on june 8th of this year i changed my party affiliation to republican. i will probably go independent next year, but i wanted to make a statement to the democratic party and unenrolled (the new york version of independent) did not seem to be strong enough. the democratic party has swung so far to the left that the fdr base of the party has been basically disenfranchised. i could not stay. i am a centrist like hillary. i do lean left, but only slightly. most pumas are like me. base democrats disillusioned with the party and their “new” base. so be it. i will vote mccain because obama is unqualified and his friends are so radical and anti-american that it is unthinkable to let him anywhere near the white house. mccain is a moderate and we will at least survive his presidency as a sovereign nation. i cant say the same for an obama administration, let him run for king of the world, just not president of the united states. country first, party second, puma.

Upon reading many of the blogs posted here, I must clarify something.
Most Americans agree with the lofty words and visions for world peace that Obama so eloquently pontificates in his speeches … It’s Obama we don’t trust. those of you who hypnotically fawn over Obama take everything he says as gospel. But, you don’t even know the man. You assume that because his words are worthy, he is trustworthy. People they are just words! Obama, the man who is speaking those words has a horrible track record. He did nothing as a senator. He spent the last 20 years accepting an anti-American racist as his mentor. His associations have been with extremely unsavory people. However, you Obamabots keep trying to characterize the rest of us as disagreeing with what Obama says … when it’s Obama himself we don’t trust … nor should you!

I could care less that Obama is using this “non-political” Berlin speech for political purposes. I just care that his campaign is vehemently denying that. Some say that everyone of his emails have a click here to “donate” link on it, so the “donate” on the Berlin speech email is not meant to solicit more contributions. Then why not remove the “donate” link? Could it be that one of the purposes of every single email sent by the Obama campaign is to get additional donations to his campaign? Obama’s campaign was premised on how he is NOT politics as usual. Yet, the more I see of him (or at least of the people handling his campaign), Obama strikes me as no different than any other politician out there. Only difference with Obama is that I don’t know what his position on gay rights, Iraq, gun control, FISA, and Iran are going to be tomorrow.

I don’t accept that. I live in the state most associated with racism and I’ve lived through the changes. Racism is like herpes; it won’t go away but it only limits some people some of the time.

“The 1980 model applies here. You have a new face to the national scene as opposed to an established figure. Polls didn’t break in a dramatic way for Reagan until the final weeks before the election.”
Huh? Methinks you weren’t around for the 1980 election.
Reagan was anything but a new face. From his B-actor career roles, stint as California governor and failed bid for the Presidency, he was THE face of neocon politics and in many ways, it’s singular success. Reagan won on the wave of revulsion to the 70s recession (remember K cars?) and incredulity with Carter’s defeatism and failure to secure the Iranian hostages. Teddy Kennedy has as much responsibility for Reagan as anyone could. Teddy fought Carter tooth and nail right up to the nomination speeches. It was tres ugly.
IOW, chiefly Reagan got lucky and Carter got Kennedied. If you’re basing Obama’s chances on luck, so be it but the reality is when he gets back from his dog and pony show, he will be up against the issues like the economy. Again, no one owns issues so he will have to start making his image into one of competency over celebrity.

Sadly, yes. We already hear them. I may not be an Obama supporter but I’m dammed if I will blame blacks for voting for him. He may not be representative in my opinion, but where I live blacks have been holding their heads higher and talking more positively and openly than I’ve heard since the pre-MLK assasination days. The Obama supporters I’ve seen go whack job have all been white.
He IS raising some black’s self-image and there is nothing but good about that. This is the right thing about the man. It’s just not sufficient reason to vote for him.

Anyone considering voting for this blithering idiot better first have a clear understanding what he actually stands for. Obama’s statement in Berlin that he was “a citizen of the World” was NOT idle chatter. The following from WorldNetDaily:
“Obama’s $845 billion U.N. plan forwarded to U.S. Senate floor
‘Global Poverty Act’ to cost each citizen $2,500 or more
Tom DeWeese at NewsWithViews said the plan “is very telling” about what Obama would do as president.
DeWeese, president of the American Policy Center, warned the over-arching plan includes the ideals of consolidating all international agencies under the U.N., regulation by the U.N. of all corporate environmental issues, license fees charged by the U.N. to use air, water and natural resources, a restructuring that would give hand-picked non-governmental organizations huge influence, authorize a standing U.N. army and require registration of all arms.”

Obviously Jake Tapper is 100% correct. The Obama camp really contacted him?? LUNATICS. Jake, tell them to just keep on giving rock star speeches while IGNORING wounded American troops by cancelling their pre-scheduled visit with the hospital in Berlin.
What’s the donation for? Throat lozenges to keep Obama’s voice clear as he BLABS to anyone who will listen to him?
Oh, and we know there were bands, free beer, and free food at Obama’s Berlin speech. And where was the million people who were supposed to show up after plastering posters and flyers everywhere, and hading out invitations all over the city? It was a pretty day–where was everyone?
Meanwhile, those in attendence were not allowed to bring signs of any kind–totally controlled by Obama’s rules. AND his visit cost the Germans over 1/2 million dollars just to have him visit.
The reviews on Obama’s speech are NOT that good in Berlin, BTW.
Obama…go away, stop trying to get votes through the media, speeches, and Olympic ad buys, and come back after you have actually DONE SOMETHING besides LIE about your resume…and which banking committee you are NOT even on!

b.s.meter: Hillary supporter for McCain? You must think we’re idiots to float a lie like that – a Hillary supporter voting to extend the Iraq war, new tax cuts for the rich, the continuation of our train wreck corporate healthcare (except for the poor clogging our expensive ER’s for hangnail treatments), and to create a Supreme Court that will indisputably overturn Roe v. Wade? Senator Clinton supporters, like Senator Clinton herself, are disappointed but strongly interested in doing the best for this country. And the last 7 years, 6 of it under complete Republican rule, makes it abundantly clear that voting for Senator McCain does not do that.
A true Senator Clinton supporter will not vote for Senator McCain, that’s the reality that makes Republican’s pretend attempts to stir the pot fall flat.

Using Germany to further his political career, and then *using* his appearance there to raise money, to further his political career???
There is *nothing* new about Obama. He is as manipulative, deceptive and dishonest as any career politician can be. Wake up people! You are being manipulated by the liberals in the media that want to ram their Phony Messiah into the White House before you even get to vote in the election!

CNN – “only the facts” are reported; ya!
That is because Obama took his three largest news agencies overseas that conduct their campaign donations center with them; ABC, CBS and NBC. American news networks have found a new low when it comes to ethical behavior. In the past, News Networks attempted to be seen as impartial. Now, all News Networks are only impartial only symbolically and not based on actions. Fox News (25 Jul 08) released data on which News Networks employees gave donations by political party. Democrats received most of the donations and Republicans received a few donations; nearly a half a million dollars to fifty thousand dollars even though no one Fox New employee donated a single dollar. ABC, CBS and NBC led the pact with donations that equaled to nearly three hundred thousand dollars. During the same period, Republicans received to a few thousand dollars. Americans did not need to be told that News Media Networks favored Democrats financially since most news events have been one sided; they have been for Obama their Democratic rock star politician. This includes falling all over themselves during the recent Obama overseas trip.
Just like Obama going to the gym versus visiting wounded troops in Germany, when the Pentagon told him he could not take his political campaign to the base, Obama declined to visit our wounded troops. All Obama does is a campaign rally to raise monies and he clearly reveals that he could care less about the average citizen. Obama only cares about Barack H. Obama and his growing wallet.

When 60-70% of a SOCIALIST country are cheering for Obama, that’s tells us all we need to know. It was the best thing that could have happened. The more he speaks, the better…the facade is dropping.
His arrogance is astonishing. He is short with reporters and gives the impression he would “cuss” you out as he did a fellow Ill. legislator that corrected him.
It’s amazing he is even in the running. I would like to know who is pulling the strings on the puppet show! I’ve never heard a candidate with so many er’s and uh’s speaking impromptuly. At least McCain doesn’t stumble.
Somebody should tell him that “a bomb” wasn’t dropped on Pearl Harbor. It was thousands.
Obama doesn’t know Afghans don’t speak Farsi as well as the number of states and which committees he is on…need I continue??? There’s many more besides hanging around terrorists and being protected by “goon”s and terrorists.
His books reveal he has a problem with self-identity which is common with someone of mixed race. He wants to appear black and receive the AA benefit, but remains confused about what to do with his “white half”.

INSULT TO INJURY …
The ‘real’ story is that Obama could have visited the wounded soldiers, but the Pentagon said not with the huge entourage and media circus … however, Obama supporters are now trying to mislead the American people by enabling Obama to now blame the Pentagon for HIS bad decision. This is a typical form of damage control that the Obama and his people have used throughout his campaign. If Obama does something right, they shower credit upon him … if he does something wrong, they blame it on someone else, or they tell us we misinterpreted what happened.

How many of you know that our service men and womens votes who are over seas DOES NOT Count, because this NO GOOD Congress will not do a thing to see that this is done.
The last Presidential election, over 80% of the votes from our overseas service men/women and Americans living over there due to work, did NOT have their vote counted. Our government says it is to costly and they do not have enough people to count all the votes.
Now give me a break, we can have oversight committees and pay them, yet we can’t have a government committee in each state count our overseas military votes or even give them a ballet?
Call, write your Congress this is an outrage and needs something done NOW>
