Kaine: Obama’s List ‘Seems to Be Getting Shorter’

ABC News’ Teddy Davis, Tahman Bradley, and Ayana Harry Report: Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) said Tuesday that Sen. Barack Obama’s, D-Ill., list of possible vice presidential running mates "seems to be getting shorter". "There has been a long list. It seems to be getting shorter. And I’m still being mentioned," said Kaine. "A lot can change day-to-day. But we’ll see." After Kaine commented on the media’s VP list to a Virginia resident who was also visiting the carnival grounds on Chincoteague Island, Kaine friend Donna Mason, chimed in, saying of the governor, "I think he is at the top of the short list" to which Kaine chuckled without saying anything. Kaine’s discussion of the media’s VP list "getting shorter" comes on the same day that The Washington Post reported that the Virginia governor has told close associates that he has had "very serious" conversations with Obama about joining the Democratic presidential ticket. The Washington Post reported that Kaine has provided documents to Obama’s campaign so that the governor’s background can be thoroughly examined. The newspaper reported that Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., are also being "seriously vetted" by Obama’s campaign staff, according to sources with knowledge of the process. Kaine, who took a leave-of-absence from Harvard Law School to work as a Catholic missionary in Honduras, made his comments about the media-created Obama VP list while visiting the carnival grounds on Chincoteague Island. The Virginia governor is on the island with daughter Annella for the annual Chincoteague pony swim. Kaine made his comments to Tom Derrickson, the part owner and general manager of the local Hampton Inn and Suites. The account printed above comes from Kaine communications director Delacey Skinner who called Kaine to find out what he said after Derrickson notified ABC News by phone that he had spoken with the governor. Derrickson was introduced to Kaine by Mason, a Kaine friend who owns the Waterside Motor Inn, the local hotel where Kaine is spending Tuesday night. The conversation took place on the Chincoteague carnival grounds near the Tilt-a-Whirl. The governor did not get on the amusement ride but the governor’s daughter and Mason’s grandchildren did, according to Derrickson. Kaine is slated to return to Richmond on Wednesday afternoon. On Saturday, he is slated to go to a beach house at the Camp Pendleton military base in Virginia for a family vacation. "It’s kind of like gubernatorial equivalent of Camp David," said Skinner when asked to describe Kaine’s vacation destination. While Kaine is scheduled to be at Camp Pendleton until Friday, Aug. 8, he is slated to interrupt his vacation on Wednesday, Aug. 6, to join Michelle Obama for a presidential campaign fundraiser in Norfolk, Va.

Hagel, Hagel, Hagel. End it tomorrow. Kaine is a nice guy but he has no military or foreign policy experience. This will be a tough race to win. Pick Chuck Hagel and the race is over. Did I say Hagel, Hagel, Hagel? Let me repeat, Hagel, Hagel Hagel. Did I mention Hagel?

I agree with Beltway’s remarks about Kaine.
“Yes we Kaine” sounds good.
However, as you say, experience is a problem.
The Votemaster (Electoral-Vote.com) said it best:
It would be Team Change vs. Team Experience! That would not be good for Obama.
However, I disagree about Hagel. Hagel will be Obama’s Sec. of Defense. He would hurt Obama as VP.
It will be Joe Biden, provided that Obama is confident enough that Biden wouldn’t overshadow Obama.
My feeling after seeing Obama operate in Europe, is that Barack isn’t afraid of Biden.
Biden, Biden, Biden.

This sure looks like a trial balloon given some of Kaine’s more conservative views on aborion and gay marriage.
Not WRIGHT for America (www.notwrightforamerica.com) has a post arguing this theory. It makes a lot of sense.

Everything seemed planned for the future campaign commercials — at least, that’s how it seemed to a U.S. Air Force captain when Sen. Barack Obama and his entourage swooped into Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan for an hour-long visit last Saturday at the start of a week-long foreign tour.
“He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle” without pausing to acknowledge the U.S. troops who had been waiting all day just for the opportunity to meet him, the officer told the Blackfive pro-military blog.
As the soldiers lined up to shake his hand, the Illinois senator “blew them off and didn’t say a word,” ducking into the conference room to meet the general.
Then the armored vehicles took him to where “he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to soldiers to thank them for their service,” the captain wrote.

Kaine is the WRONG choice – What a waste that would be and could cost Obama the Presidency.
How would you feel voting for ywo inexprienced candidates -
Kaine can’t shine the shoes of Clinton, Biden or Richardson.
He is a very poor choice.

It’s going to be O.K in ’08..
Sounds like a great slogan for Obama/Kaine to me

Posted by: tim | July 30, 2008, 1:48 am 1:48 am

Obama will be a great Commander-in-Chief Jack.
Republicans will look for fault with everything Obama does or doesn’t do.
The fact is he personally met with hundreds of cheering troops and he visited the wounded during his last moments in Iraq – and there were no cameras – that’s why you don’t know about it. He also called some of the wounded soldiers on the phone in Germany, after the Pentagon pulled their stunt to try to derail Obama’s successful trip and give McCain false talking points.
Back to the subject of this article:
Why is it that the media doesn’t tell us that if Obama were to choose Evan Bayh, then the Democrats would likely lose a seat. That probably means that Bayh is a NO for VP.
Also, why is it that Chris Dodd gets NO Respect from the MSM. Dodd has confirmed that he had been Vetted, weeks ago. I don’t expect Dodd to be picked ahead of Joe Biden (since a Senate seat would be lost in Conn. also), but he is certainly in the top 4 list.
I also heard from someone in VA that Tim Kaine has a reputation for raising taxes to pay for everything. That is that last thing Team Obama needs.

Kaine is an interesting choice as VP pick. An early Obama endorser, similar age, there is a lot about Obama/Kaine that could be like Clinton/Gore. BUT are Clinton supporters going to take an early Obama endorser, and the other small factor is that Kaine’s lieutenant Governor is a Republican. Do the Democratic Party want to gift the Republicans a governors seat, and give Lt Gov Bolling the gift of incumbency as he starts a run to become governor in his own right? I think more and more Evan Bayh might be the name that emerges from all of this, especially given it seems as if the Dems are gonna make pickups in the Senate this year.

Posted by: markymark | July 30, 2008, 6:17 am 6:17 am

People seem to think Obama can pick someone other than Hillary because other candidates will get the Bubba vote and cover it better.
It’s a dangerous logic, because Hillary Clinton is more than the voter appeal she showed. She won 18 million votes, and not picking her is dissing those voters. They demand respect.

The excitement is gone. Obama do whatever but if the country continues to go to hell in a hand basket, dont blame me I am not voting for. He wants to pick some one who wont outshine him if thats the case he is very limited but kaine would be in there. If he picks Hagel, I better never hear Obama mention democratic unity again.

Hillary-Edwards or McCain-Romney. Obama needs 3 VPs to fill up his gaps – 1 for economy, 1 for foreign policy and 1 for national security. McCain with years since the 80′s in senate and congress only needs 1 VP that will fill up his gap in economy. At least McCain is honest enough to admit his weakness

Posted by: neil1785 | July 30, 2008, 7:39 am 7:39 am

McCain is well-versed in Foreign Policy and National Security with his years of experience in military, senate and congress. Romney is well-versed in economy being a CEO of large companies and a Hardvard graduate with MBA and highest honors (experience coupled with academic intelligence). Obama is well-versed at nothing although he boasts of his Harvard degree with questionable achievements and zero experience…oh…oh …143 days’ exprience in high office not to mention his being a community organizer….what an experience….

American People are not that dumb not to notice Obama’s inadequacies, inexperience and low qualifications. The truth will come out in November.

Wow this is shocking, HOMELESS VOTERS ON THE RISE. Hmm lets see who could be trying to get homeless people to vote? I wonder how he is bribing them.
Well I know that this same person handed out tickets to a Dave Matthew’s Band concert during a Clinton rally to get the college students not to attend.
Also it is funny how the press never reports the free huge concerts before Obama’s large rallies.

sayuncle,
The onlye bill that he passed in teh US Senate that’s really his own and not partnered with or pioneered by anyone else is the one for Africa, which shows Obama’s priorities. He lied about the bills that he claimed he passed in the senate for voting

Phil, great post!
It is really frightening when you add up all of the factors of how Obama became the nominee. Obama is so corrupt and he has only been in the senate for a very short while. He owes a lot of people favors. Think about who those people are…scary.

I would not choose Rev. Wright, Rev. Meeks, or Father Plager as my spiritual mentors, not for political reasons or any other reason. Again, he is either blind or an opportunist. Would I be hanging out with Mr. Ayers? Would you? Would you refuse to be photographed with Gavin Newsom? There is a pattern with this guy – he manipulates; and for him the ends justify the means. He lacks character.

Casper,
How and who has he inspired. What has he inspired them to do? He has stolen most of his speeches from other people and the speeches that were not stolen were written by a 26 year old speech writer, not Obama. The large crowds that are seen at some of his rallies are always there for a free concert, then Obama comes out to speak. That is all part of his plan, to get people like you to believe the hype and be blind to the truth.

Kaine is anti gay rights and anti-choice
(says he won’t overturn Roe just like Bush did)
and is not the VP candidate that Obama needs
he gives cover for Obama to pick Ridge
in which case we get a tiny extra bump in Virginia of having Kaine on the ticket rather than if he were campaigning as Gov with Warner
but then Ridge takes PA
chances are Ridge eats him alive in the debates and we lose Ohio, Michigan and NH having two experienced vets on the ticket …the foreign policy comes front and center like McCain wants
and we lose VA anyway because 2 experienced Vets on a ticket beat a smart inspiration and a reverse inspiring anti-gay long time anti stem cell vp every time in a heavily military state.
Kaine is the worst choice out there. Hands down.

Posted by: dl | July 30, 2008, 8:17 am 8:17 am

I mean gives McCain cover to pick Ridge.

Posted by: dl | July 30, 2008, 8:18 am 8:18 am

Kaine has said abortion should not be illegal but that it is wrong. so what does that mean
Kaine has said thet gays should not be granted even civil unions.
Kaine has said for a very long time that the government should not support embryonic stem cell research.
and the list goes on from George w. …I mean this new VP candidate’s resume. ugh.

Neil,
That is an argument. Indeed, Obama should always strive to be right – this is not an inherent feature of any candidate – but he has to be ready for the tasks that lie ahead. I, and many like me, believe that he is ready. You do not. That is a reasonable argument to make.
I would then draw your attention to Pres. Lincoln, Kennedy and even Reagan. All of whom had very little actual experience, especially for the Executive Office. All of them are now American icons, as, I am sure, Obama soon will be as well.

Posted by: neil1785 | July 30, 2008, 8:55 am 8:55 am

I am a Democrat who would like to stay a Democrat and vote Democratic. However, I believe John McCain is right on energy. We have to drill in this this country, as well as develop alternative energy – as fast as possible. It doesn’t make sense for Barack Obama and the Democrats to say that drilling will take years to accomplish, and will not affect the price of gasoline. Have they forgotten that developing alternative energy sources will also take years, more years than drilling? In the meantime, a commitment to drilling will signal America’s seriousness about becoming energy independent. That in itself will encourage the oil nations to increase supply so that prices will drop. I honestly believe that oil and energy are the most important issues in this election, and future elections. We’ve built an economy based on cheap oil – and cheap oil is gone. If we don’t address the energy crisis in a very real way, and don’t commit ourselves to developing wind, solar and other sources of energy to protect our environment, then the other issues of the day won’t matter. We won’t have much of a country left. Really, people, do you want to continue transferring America’s wealth to nations who use our money to fund terrorists? How long can we keep buying 70% of our energy from other nations before much of our national wealth is gone? I don’t like Bill O’Reilly very much, but he is right about one thing. If alternative forms of energy are not developed in the next few decades, another world war will be fought – over oil. I am willing to vote for whatever candidate will truly and seriously address energy – and I don’t care if he/she is Republican/Democrat, black or white, Jew or Gentile. Just do something about the energy crisis beyond lip service, and you’ve got my vote.

JBradley.
How long will it take before you see the results of drilling in US? A conservative estimate is 10 years.
Btw. There are already enormous areas of US soil where congress has given go-ahead to drill, but the oil companies are very slow to utilize these areas, because they like the price of oil being high.
Don’t blame the Dems for this issue, blame the speculators. Quo bonum – who benefits from high oil prices?
Certainly not Obama.

TRUTH IS EVENTUALLY COMING OUT…SLOW BUT SURE….
By Michelle WhiteDove (America’s #1 Psychic and God-fearing Catholic)
What will happen to Obama?
As of today, Obama is over-confident and the power is going to his head. He is buying into his own PR hype. His people are playing up the Christian family man, but we are in the beginning stages of scandal, after scandal. His colorful past will crop up as his opposition is digging for the dirt. In Obama’s younger years he never thought that he would be running for US President. So now the ugly truth will be spoon fed to the American public: marital indiscretions, prejudice, drug use, associations with the wrong people and even money laundering associated with his church. The country’s opinion will turn on him. Unfortunately this will cause Oprah great embarrassment, and will lead to a drop in her ratings.
In the end, Obama’s reputation will be too tarnished for the vice president, Hillary will not want him. I believe that she has already spoken to John Edwards about him jumping back on the ticket as VP. John is the man with ethics, morals, and he’s standing by his wife during her time of crisis. He looks good on paper and he’s not a threat.
-Senator Barack Obama He’s a good person but American is not fully accepting of his vision. He will pull a majority of the African American votes, and will be a strong front runner at first. I see a strong start, weak finish. In the end his party will not support him as their frontrunner on the ballot. Could end up on the ticket as a VP but doubtful.
This prediction remains unchanged.

When you make a statement either support it with facts, man up and apologize for your mistake, or get out of the discussion. Blatantly ignoring a reasonable question reduces your already evaporating credibility.

Posted by: Bo Pellini | July 30, 2008, 9:46 am 9:46 am

TO THE STUPID IDIOTS (casper, Katie from Kentucky and Still Waiting)…need I reasearch for you…geeezzzz….
Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809–April 15, 1865), the sixteenth President of the United States, successfully led his country through its greatest internal crisis, the Civil War, only to be assassinated less than a week after the war’s end[1]. Before his election as President, Lincoln was a lawyer, a member of the United States House of Representatives, and an unsuccessful candidate for election to the Senate. As an outspoken opponent of the expansion of slavery in the United States,[2][3] Lincoln won the Republican Party nomination in 1860 and was elected president later that year. During his term, he helped preserve the United States by leading the defeat of the secessionist Confederate States of America in the American Civil War. He introduced measures that resulted in the abolition of slavery, issuing his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and promoting the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which passed Congress before Lincoln’s death and was ratified by the states later in 1865.
Lincoln closely supervised the victorious war effort, especially the selection of top generals, including Ulysses S. Grant. Historians have concluded that he handled the factions of the Republican Party well, bringing leaders of each faction into his cabinet and forcing them to cooperate. Lincoln successfully defused a war scare with the United Kingdom in 1861. Under his leadership, the Union took control of the border slave states at the start of the war. Additionally, he managed his own reelection in the 1864 presidential election.
Opponents of the war (also known as “Copperheads”) criticized him for refusing to compromise on the slavery issue. Conversely, the Radical Republicans, an abolitionist faction of the Republican Party, criticized him for moving too slowly in abolishing slavery. Even with these road blocks, Lincoln successfully rallied public opinion through his rhetoric and speeches; his Gettysburg Address is but one example of this. At the close of the war, Lincoln held a moderate view of Reconstruction, seeking to speedily reunite the nation through a policy of generous reconciliation. His assassination in 1865 was the first presidential assassination in U.S. history and made him a martyr for the ideal of national unity.

Again to the obama supporters
of which I am a big one…
huge red lights today…
just the idea that Kaine has been floated around…
go look at this guys stances on …
abortion
gay rights
stemcell research…
foreign policy…he has none
just the floating of his name has damaged my enthusiasm.
It says that the obama team is not smart enough to realize the ramifications of a Kaine choice (McCain getting cover to choose Ridge …2 experioenced vets against Obama Kaine…oy…and then we lose …probable PA, Ohio, Michigan…NH AND the kicker…the heavily military state of …drum roll…Virginia.)
not to mention that his stances on things like abortion being similar to a 2000Bush campaign, flashing around a guy who is freakin’ anti civil union …not just anti marriage but anti-civil union in 2008…and a guy who put his religion in front of Nancy Reagan and John mccain pushing for stem cell research.
ugh…
and Kaine cancelled his events today…because something mysterious has come up.
If this guy is obama’s VEEP
Obama has a serious problem because he just shot people like me in the head.
and I think most people who read this blog will tell you I am a huge supporter of Obama’s for literally over a year now.

I keep seeing emails from Hillary supporters who will not vote for Obama unless Hillary is on the ticket. Well, I’m a Hillary supporter, and I won’t vote for Obama even if Hillary IS on the ticket. I won’t vote for Obama – period! His little stunt at the wall in Jerusalam was more than I can stomach. What kind of man would write a prayer to God, asking Him to help guard against pride among other things, and then give a copy of the prayer to a newspaper beforehand. And before you say that never happened, you stupid Obamabots, a second newspaper in Israel has revealed that they, too, got a copy of Obama’s private prayer before he stuck it into the holy wall in Israel. So it looks like Jesus Obama prayed to God to keep him humble, among other things, and then made sure the entire world knows about it. God help us if this arrogant son of a youknowwhat becomes president.

Neil Obama has years now of foreign policy records, stances, speeches fights….
we know where obama stands on foreign policy…
my point is Kaine we don’t and he has shown absolutely NO leadership on the issue.
that combined with having more right wing views on a few issues than even McCain never mind Ridge…
makes him …a absolutely ridiculously stupid choice for Obama.
Obama would get more of a bump keeping Kaine as Governor campaigning with Warner and Webb…
but if you have the two go up against McCain Ridge 2 vets (and the only way Mccain can pick Ridge is if Obama doesn’t pick Biden or Clinton).
and McCain REALLY wants to pick Ridge.

Yeah, right. His senate records show otherwise. Obama has days or months but less than a year of foreign policy records, stances, speeched, fights(HUH???? is this included in his resume???….you make me laugh)…Perhaps that’s the Obama Camp’s bloated records and Obama’s bloated resume….

Posted by: neil1785 | July 30, 2008, 10:17 am 10:17 am

Neil,
You are saying that Lincoln’s term as House rep counts for far more than Obama’s experience as a Senator? Ok. If those are the criteria you use to select your candidate, no problem. If the fact that he is a one-term senator is enough to distract you from his political agenda – which I am not entirely sure you understand – no problem. That is democracy.
I am glad that the majority of Americans, historically speaking, have not applied your criteria, as these would have deprived the nation of some of its most benignly influential presidents.
Lastly, I urge you and others like you, to rise up out of the intellectual sewer and to stand above the sort of bigotry and hate you have spread here today. Why? Because we owe it to the legacy of people like Lincoln not to let our political agendas be dictated to by the paradigm of fear. WE have seen the results of this paradigm in the current presidency. God helps us all…

I talk about my dad worked for Polaroid for years and how the company in it’s protectionist mindset went down hill not focusing on the changes they needed to move into the future that some of the younger guys in management would put forward.
The reason the younger guys never could succeed with some of the changes they were trying to implement was because they needed an older member of management to team with them…
Polarois was just like America is now…as my father said…”gotten to be a fat lazy cat” that can’t chase the mouse… and is probably diabetic at this point…
Obama IS the change.
He needs a familiar face that America knows will fight for them all the while reassuring them this guy is not going to make a mistake.
Not that he would but …he needs John McCain in democratic form…
sorry but whether you hate him or not…that’s Joe Biden.

Tim, let me remind you…you must be a kid during the 90′s…
FACTS: Only the Clintons understand the American economy. Social Security is being paid with money borrowed from China. The USA doesn’t make enough money from tax payers the IRS only reports $400 billions a year. The USA owes $40 trillions with interests. There are 1000 billions in a trillion. There is no money for Social Security it has been taken for other expenses. The USA people don’t have as much savings compare to the rest of the world. The USA medical system is the most expensive in the world. The oil bought today is paid with money borrowed from China. The world considers China the new empire not the USA. When Mr. Clinton was President the USA was #1 in the world with the strongest economy. The Clintons left $500 billions surplus, a balance budget and the world enjoy peace.

All you have to do is look at the electoral map and see that Obama has a very good chance of winning. As far as VP it would be a mistake to have Hillary. Obama is for change and Hillary is far from it. Who wants more of the Clinton Bush dynasties in the white house. And I seriously doubt Kaine will be his running mate.

Posted by: erin | July 30, 2008, 10:33 am 10:33 am

According to Michelle WhiteDove (America’s #1 Psychic) and a number of other Psychics as well agree and I do believe from my gut feeling,
HER Presidency:
Hillary will face decisions that NO MAN has had to deal will during one presidency: Wars, Natural Disasters, Martial Law, Economic Failure, US terrorism, and Civil Unrest. So be assured that Hillary is the right man for the job. “Spirit” says that she will make the best decisions for our country. That’s the bottom line.

There is a perception that the race for the Whitehouse will be determined by the VP selections. I am glad to see that the creepy Clintons are all but off the list. Hagel seems to be in some constant identity crisis. Sebelius seems to have fallen off the radar screen – a shame as she is qualified and not a screamer. I wonder if we should be looking for someone from the business world.

also, erin,
REMEMBER, BEFORE THE 2004 GENERAL ELECTION, THE GALLUP POLLS WERE CONSISTENTLY UP FOR KERRY BY 14% -15% OVER BUSH. AFTER THE ELECTION ITSELF, KERRY HAD DOUBLE-DIGIT (88%) ADVANTAGE ON BLACK VOTES OVER BUSH (11%). GUESS WHO EVENTUALLY WON? DID THE BLACK VOTE MATTERED? WE HAVE 85% WHITES OVER 15% BLACK POPULATION IN US ALONE. THIS 85% HAS NOT COME OUT YET FROM THEIR SHELL AND THIS 85% MAY BRING THE BEST IN MCCAIN COME THIS FALL THEY’RE NOT AS VOCAL ABOUT IT AS THE BLACKS. MAJORITY OF THOSE 85% ARE THINKING…WEIGHING…AND NOT PLAYING THE RACE CARD.
I DON’T BELIEVE THE GALLUP POLLS RIGHT NOW WHERE OBAMA HAS A LEAD. THAT LEAD WILL VANISH SOON BECAUSE WHEREVER I GO, WHOMEVER I MEET PERSONALLY OR ONLINE, I NEVER HEARD GOOD THINGS ABOUT OBAMA OTHER THAN THOSE POSTED BY THE OBAMANOTS .ONLY A FEW OF THEM ARE OBAMANOTS IN ALL BLOGS THAT I WENT INTO. THEY ARE FAR OUTNUMBERED BY SO MANY BLOGGERS WHO DON’T JUST SIMPLY FORGET OBAMA SCANDALS AND ISSUES IN THE PAST RECENT MONTHS AND HIS FLIP-FLOPPINGS…WHO DON’T JUST SIMPLY FORGET THE UNDERESTIMATION AND CHEATINGS ON MICHIGAN AND FLORIDA… WHO DON’T JUST SIMPLY FORGET HOW HILLARY WAS DEMORALIZED BY THE OBAMA CAMP, MEDIA, ETC.

Neil I don’t believe in the day to day polls. I am looking at the electoral map which shows Obama 292 vs McCain 195. And if you want to talk about flip flops, McCain of 2000 is nothing like McCain of 2008. He has changed on so many issues. And let’s not get started on Fl and Mi again. Hillary was in agreement until it didn’t suit her, dead issue. I am not against Hillary, in fact I would have voted for her.

Kaine fits in perfect with Obama. A guy who has accomplished so little as Governor and has very little experience in foreign policy. The perfect Obama running mate: inexperienced! (just like Obama).

Posted by: Duck15 | July 30, 2008, 10:49 am 10:49 am

erin,
Hillary is more intelligent than Bill. They are 2 sides of the same coin. I’ve been hearing in the 90′s before that the good results from White House are from the wife as a personal adviser. The Clintons as far as I remember had the best economic record ever in the history of the United States. That’s not too bad, as far as the rest, the petty matters…? I’m not too concerned with them. Barack Obama (BO as in Bad Odor)is going to have serious problems without the Clintons. personally, I would advise Hillary to let BO (Bad Odor) fall on his own. So that she can comeback and run again 2012. John McCain is in a statistical tie for the White House.

Um Neil,
You STILL haven’t addressed Casper’s question. Calling me, Casper, Katie and anyone who holds you accountable for inaccurate statements an idiot isn’t a very strong response either. Neither is cutting and pasting from Wikipedia. This is the best source an Ivy Leaguer can find?
But I digress. The point is that you STILL haven’t answered the question. All you did was give us a long list of Lincoln’s accomplishments AFTER taking office. The original argument focused on experience and qualifications BEFORE taking office.
Then after pressed by Casper you mentioned out the House of Represenatives. While I wouldn’t call that a “high office” it’s a start. When Casper asked you to compare Lincoln’s House experience to Obama’s Senate and experience you missed again. Look at the constitution, the Federalist papers, and general politics. Everyone knows that the Senate is more distinguished than the House. The framers set it up that way. I’m not saying the Obama’s senate experience trumps Lincoln. I’m just saying that you still really haven’t answered Casper’s questions and apparently your knowledge only comes from what you can cut and paste out of website.
Apparently they’re teaching Google 101 at the Ivy League schools.
Once again, either support your statements with facts, apologize for your mistake, or get out of the discussion.

homeland security – hagel

I watched the perfect Obama choice for veep being interviewed on the Charlie Rose show a couple of days ago. Ret. ADM William Fox Fallon would be the ideal candidate and counterpoint to the Republican ticket. He once developed the skillset to take off and land on a carrier deck. Based on his recent assignment in 2007-2008 as the CENTCOM commander, which made him GEN. Petraeus’ boss. He is very knowledgeable about the current situation in the Middle East. He had a distinguished career in the Navy, including diplomatic experience, and retired as a 4-star Admiral. He’s Catholic. He was described in an Esquire magazine article as the only thing standing between the Bush administration and war with Iran. OBAMA/FALLON has a nice ring to it and I think it would be unbeatable.

Thankfully Obama is still only the preumptive nominee of the Dem. Party, even though he thinks he has already been elected. But, probably not much chance the super delegates will come to their senses before the convention, particularly since they chose Obama in spite of the fact that Hillary got more votes than he did. Looks like he has to pick a woman Veep candiidate just to get elected and when we point out that she is more qualified than he is, we can expect his usual articulate ih, ih, eh, eh, uh, uh whenever faced with a tough question! BTW, why does Obama take off his sun glasses after coming out of a building? Oh yeah, there was that charming picture of JFK wearing sun glasses. Maybe some one will clue Obama that JFK was outside at the beach at the time.

Obama – Kaine would be a great ticket if you think a man who has been Governor for less then four years and an Accidental Senator who has been a in the Senate for only four years and spent two of those four years running for President. Sure it would be great.
Obama has no real experience, while in the IL State Senate he voted present more times then “yes” or “no” on bills. He voted against giving gang members the death penalty when they commit horrific crimes. This guy will be a real gem against the Terrorists.
Gov. Kaine the man can’t get a simple transportation project done like butting rail to Dulles how is he going to get anything done in Washington. If you ask me neither are qualified, if it weren’t for his personal handlers at MSNBC H. R. Clinton would be the nominee. It is sad when Clinton herself and Terry McAuliffe say that Fox was fairer then CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS or NBC for matter. I urge all Clintonites to Vote for John McCain he is more a Democrat then republican anyways.

I don’t understand why McCain has not put together a good ad detailing some of these things to at least plant the seed of these ideas.

I’d personally like to see Hagel as Obama’s VP as well. Kaine is a strong pick, but isn’t very well known outside of Virginia. Edwards probably imploded with his affair scandal, whether it’s true or not. Hillary comes with a lot of baggage that could hurt him with independents and Republican cross-overs. She would help with Democrats, but Obama is polling extremely well amongst Democrats. I also like Bill Richardson and Joe Biden quite a bit (in that order). Hagel would send a HUGE message though. It would really show that Obama is about putting party politics to the side and picking the most qualified people. We really have to move on as a nation from the bitter partisan bickering. The only way to remain the top superpower is to be united. The stakes are too high. There are too many major issues our country is facing. We need to stop this mentality that people from the other party are our enemies. We’re all Americans. We all want a strong and prosperous America.

How many of you know that the mainstream media decided to not inform us that before the well hyped speech by Obama in Berlin that his campaign provided a free concert by two wildly popular rock performances by reggae artist Patrice and rock band Reamonn? The Obama campaign also provided free pizza, bratwurst and even beer during the three hour concert that took place before his speech. Come to find out this same thing happened months ago when the media reported huge crowds came out to see him in Oregon. The media also did not tell us that the Obama campaign provided free food, alcohol and entertainment at this event too. My question is why does he feel the need to persuade people to be at his speaking engagements by giving them free food, drinks and entertainment? Did Kennedy, Reagan or Clinton have to do this when they spoke in Berlin? The answer is “No” because they had something of more substance to talk about. He tours around Europe and the Middle East for a week and now he is an expert on foreign policy. This kind of reminds me of those Holiday Inn commercials where the guy is performing an operation on a patient and he leans over and says, “Great Job Doctor”, then he replies, “Oh I’m not a doctor but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.” dohhhh….

Hey Neil. Guess who McCain names as his favorite President and his role model as a politician? Teddy Roosevelt. Roosevelt was only 42 years old when he first became President. He had almost no political experience. He was briefly Assistant Sec of the Navy, then less than 2 years as Governor, then only 6 months as Vice President before he had to take over after McKinley’s assasination.
Funny how McCain talks of Obama’s lack of experience, yet McCain’s favorite President was the youngest President ever who had the least experience!
Years in politics does not make you a wise leader. In fact, most people want term limits because they know the longer you stay in Washington, the more likely you are to be corrupted. That describes John McCain completely. He was part of the Keating Five Scandal. He was caught handing out tobacco lobbyist money on the floor of Congress. He gave up his campaign finance reform completely, and won’t even mention it anymore. He flipped on his own immigration reform bill when lobbyists got to him. He now claims to support Bush’s tax cuts he twice voted against.
One of the reasons I like Obama is the very fact that he hasn’t been in Washington long enough to be corrupted.
Now, stop spamming the board. It makes you look desperate.

Senator Obama will be a great, smart president. As for Kaine, he would help the ticket in Virginia, and he has good executive experience to draw on (He’s Virginia’s Governor, after all). Also, Virginia may go Blue this year – as made possible through Kaine. So this ticket of Obama-Kaine has some good prospects. I bet the Republicans are just foaming at the mouth over this. Actually, the Republicans are probably too busy dealing with their latest criminal, Senator Ted Stevens. The Republican Culture of Corruption continues.

A sure bet for Obama would be to pick (former)Sen. Edwards for VP. Edwards’ overall image and relatively high ethics can only help Obama who suffers somewhat in the perceived morals department. It would be a mistake to believe the lies of The Enquirer about Edwards having a lover while his wife was struggling with cancer. That bit about a “love child” is hardly believable either. History will vindicate Edwards, unless, of course, it turns out to be true.
Anyway, an Obama-Edwards ticket would go a long ways towards making August less boring.

Posted by: Alan in Oregon | July 30, 2008, 2:16 pm 2:16 pm

I have been thinking Sam Nunn would be Obama’s VP pick.
But now that I learn Kaine went to Harvard Law School (practically a lapel pin which says “elitist liberal”) and has a socio/political “social conscience” (fits the Alinsky forumla of socialist agenda married to liberal religion), and is younger than Nunn, Kaine could be a good match, and he’s the Harvard Old-boy network, too.
Maybe it will be Kaine, who might carry Virginia. After all, as Republicans have forotten, it only takes loss of one red state to change the electoral outcome. McCain, it appears, is poised to lose several. But then, McCain would rather lose the Presidency than leave Iraq.

A huge part of Evan Bayh’s appeal, and the reason Obama would short-list him, is that before getting elected to the Senate in ’98, Bayh was a very popular two-term Governor in Indiana; and a popular Democrat in what has always been a strong Republican State.
Thus, Bayh would bring that seemingly important “executive experience”. He’s pro-choice, but supported the ban on partial-birth abortions; and while Governor, he was praised for his fiscal conservatism.
Bayh could well help Obama carry Indiana, (a State which has not gone for a Democratic Presidential candidate since Johnson in ’64).
Do not underestimate the popularity back home of Senator Bayh! Likewise, with Bayh on the ticket, Indiana’s Democratic candidate for Governor, Jill Long-Thompson, just MIGHT ride BAYH’s coat-tails to win against the Republican incumbant, Mitch Daniels.

Regarding Lincoln: several have commented here about Lincoln’s political resume before the Presidency. Lincoln in fact served several terms in the Illinois State Legislature, and then one single two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives. So, Lincoln’s experience in Federal office was limited to that one two-year term, and that was in the 1840′s. He had been long out of office by the time he ran for the Presidency in 1860; after losing a race for U.S. Senate in 1858.

So what happened to Edwards? “chirp, chirp [crickets]” I smell DNC and “mainstream media” (same thing anymore) coverup, as usual when it comes to Democrats. I had thought that Edwards was on the “short” list according to reports prior to the Enquirer’s expose’. The Enquirer seems to now be the home of real journalism anymore, and the “mainstream media” is nothing more than the propaganda arm of the DNC.

Senator Obama needs to pick a VP that knows their way around a military base
without a tour guide, a grasp of foriegn policy, knows people on the hill, and has credibility on the Sunday news shows. Did I mention one that can hold their own in the debates? He needs to select Senator James Webb and tell all these other power hungry rookies to gain some more minor league experience before trying out for the bigs.

It may sound lame and nitpicky, but I think Kaine may be a liability when it comes to the energy issue. He outright championed the coal plant that is now being built in SW virginia, and one wonders how this could effect Obama’s credibility if he makes promises to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on the campaign trail.

As a native Richmonder I watched Tim Kaine preside as mayor over one of the most corrupt and inept administrations this city has ever seen. As a Virginian it took him a total of 13 days as governor before he broke his promise not to raise taxes. He most recently raised our vehicle registration fees by a whopping 33%.
I hereby proclaim Tim Kaine as fit and prepared to carry on Democratic traditions at the national level. Please pick him.

Posted by: Jonnie Jumpup | July 30, 2008, 5:05 pm 5:05 pm

Given the ongoing rumors that Governor Kaine could possibly be Obama’s choice for vice-president, the country needs to know something about the character of Timothy Kaine. In the May 5, 2006 issue of the Richmond Times Dispatch, there is an article (Citizen Kaine) that comments on Kaine’s attempt to create an environment for voter fraud. In pandering to illegal aliens, Kaine sought to amend a bill that required the Division of Motor Vehicles (DVM) to delete a requirement for individuals to state their citizenship status on application forms to include voter registration applications. There were a number of letters sent to the editor of the RTD and to state senators suggesting that Kaine’s actions were an attempt to foster voter fraud. He tried it in Virginia. As VP, would he continue attempts to undermine the law? His meetings with Vincente Fox, former president of Mexico, an individual who encouraged citizens of Mexico to break our laws and enter the U.S. illegally, speak to Kaine’s character. Unfortunately, John McCain is no better.

Obama will bring change – Socialism. Other than higher taxes, bigger government and less personal responsibility, Obama is the worst candidate in recent memory. He says whatever he thinks the people want to hear in that particular setting.
Against guns in IL, for guns in KY. For NAFTA in Texas, against it in MI. The guy is more of a politician than McCain. At least McCain has values he mostly stands by. McCain had the opportunity to heave the Hanoi Hilton after 3 years when he was a POW…but he refused to leave his fellow soldiers and stayed in that hell-hole for 3 more years. Would Obama do that?

Posted by: Obama is a God | July 30, 2008, 5:37 pm 5:37 pm

Kaine? Isn’t he the completely befuddled looking, inept speaker that did the rebuttal to the State of the Union address? Even if I was for Obama, I wouldn’t be if he makes that choice.

Posted by: Don | July 30, 2008, 5:40 pm 5:40 pm

How cool will that be?
The Bible had Cain and Abel
the U.S. would have Kaine and Babble

MDK is right on, but,, which one would be, “big dummy”?

Posted by: flatshoe | July 30, 2008, 6:06 pm 6:06 pm

Of course the list has gotten shorter. Former Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards was caught cheating on his wife. His wife is dying from cancer but Edwards had to see his mistress and a love child at the Beverly Hilton. It seems John Edwards is no longer Obama’s top pick.
I wonder where Edwards has been the last 6 days? A better question is where is the liberal media? What was Edwards doing in that hotel at 2:40 in the morning if he was not a guest?

I refuse to vote for anyone who’s ever graduated from Yale (see last 20 years) or anyone who has a “ranch”.

The one fatal problem with Hagel is that if anything ever happens to Obama, the GOP are back in power. Absolutely a no-no.

Posted by: mystic | July 30, 2008, 7:50 pm 7:50 pm

Obama is too liberal, acts like a racist (Rev. Wright protege), and is no different than Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, or other liberal egomaniacs. Please folks, look at the reality here. Tax and spend, tax and spend. McCain is much more of a moderate, and much more likely to deliver true change and real reform. Not Obama. Or you can expect 4 years of gradually worsening domestic and international status for the USA.
Go ahead, dream on. He’s full of empty promises. He’s in it for the power!

Obama should pick Biden. Then they can plagiarize other politicians’ speeches as a team.

Posted by: Roger Doctor | July 30, 2008, 9:05 pm 9:05 pm

Great, The reason to pick a Veep according to 2 Obama Supporters is more Weak Madison Ave phrases.
OK (Obama and Kaine) and Yes We Kaine.
Well enough said for a totally non substantive candidate.

how abt al franken??..he is a bigger dic head than obama! and also a good lap dog!

On the plus side, an Obama-Kaine ticket would get Kaine out of Virginia. You can’t place a value on that. Of the Virginia contingent on the Democrat side, Mark Warner would have made a much better running mate. Seems John Warner’s Senate seat suits him a little better though.

Posted by: BigDaddyDK | July 30, 2008, 9:33 pm 9:33 pm

Barack, you “Kaine’t” have my vote unless it’s Hillary!

Posted by: MJ | July 30, 2008, 10:12 pm 10:12 pm

McCain is unbeatable even without a VP. Obama could choose the real Messiah and he still wouldn’t win.

“INDEPENDENT” THINKER:
That washed-up stale rhetoric about “too liberal, blah blah blah” is only interesting to the far-right loonies who still adore W. The rest of us have MOVED ON and frankly don’t care anymore about your artificial paranoia about how bad things will be if your man doesn’t get elected.
Go Obama!!

Posted by: JP | July 30, 2008, 10:12 pm 10:12 pm

The back and forth is all great reading, but maybe someone could educate me as to this:
1. Identify the legislative accomplishments that Obama has initiated.
2. Name the issues on which he has been a leader in the Senate, regardless of whether the legislation passed.
3. Does anyone have a link that shows the analysis of his tax plan and economic plan?

Posted by: robt | July 30, 2008, 10:23 pm 10:23 pm

If Biden gets the VP post, Obama will never be heard of again. Biden will not stop talking the whole time he is in office. Lets hope Joe gets the job so he can give us a lecture everyday. Listen to Joe, because he knows everything. Just ask him a question and he will automatically start a speech. This is getting better every day. We currently have to choose between two bozos’ running and now they throw in Biden. OH, please someone help us. What a great direction our country is headed. This is the best we can provide our country. Two Senators running for Pres, and now a third Senator running for the VP post. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Everyone of these guys have never worked a day in their life. The tax payers have been their cash machine since birth…

Gasper – Kennedy had 14 years experience in the House and Senate…so there is no Obama experience in comparison…besides his father was an ambassador
As for Kaine…I can see it now,
Kaine is Able!

Quote of the Day – Mar 15, 2008
“My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the
history of the world. I hope you’ll join with me as we try to change it.”
– Barack Obama

It blows me away that there are so many differing opinions concerning this race. What the heck does it matter? At the level that both Obama and McCain are nothing that they say is sincere. I am convinced that politicians are all exactly the same. They will say whatever it takes to get elected. They have no conviction at all. They want power period. All that they want from us is 1. Our money and 2. our vote. Don’t kid yourself we haven’t a clue what either of these clowns have in mind. No president in years (maybe ever) has done what they promised and yet we are all so anxious to have an identity that we post with anger on sites like this, call each other names and swear that what we believe is factual. No one except the very small circle around these guys know what they really are like. Quit being so foolish as to act like you know what they’ll do. Ridiculous!

BO is getting pretty cocky. I sure don’t like the way he is handling himself. He is acting like he is bigger than his own country. He is too big for his britches.

Posted by: Joseph | July 31, 2008, 12:04 am 12:04 am

Obama is too smart to pick Hillary as a running mate. Check the Clinton graveyard from Arkansas and Washington. Lee Hamilton would be perfect. An astute , honest politician, with plenty of knowledge of the international stage. And low key enough,so as not to clash with Barack, personality wise.

Richardson for V.P.

John Edwards not at the top of the list?

Posted by: jr | July 31, 2008, 7:17 am 7:17 am

McCain by 10% in the fall – doesn’t matter who the Veep is for Obama – he is toast. Americans are stupid, yes, but not THAT stupid to elect a man with no experience in foreign affiars, the economy, or indeed common sense, plus his choice of friends and mentors over the years will be rehashed ad nauseum! McCain is not my choice to save us either, but between him and Obama, well there is NO option for anyone who doesn’t want to see the USA slide off into 3rd world status over the next 20 years. Even two years of Obama’s policies, with a Dem Congress, led by the worst fools in the history of the institution, would cause more damage to our country than could be quickly reversed by big swings in the electorate in 2010. There is no need to jump off a cliff in 2008 just because people seek “change”. When they see what the change would be, all hell would break loose – we can do better than this and will in Nov 2008 with a McCain landslide in the electoral college and popular vote.

Posted by: Dennis in Ohio | July 31, 2008, 8:26 am 8:26 am

Calm down everyone.
Kaine’s haircut eliminates his running as VP.
And as for the chances of McCain’s success, America hasn’t elected a bald president since Dwight Eisenhower.
A sweep-over?
How can you trust a man who can’t even tell himself the truth that he’s bald.

Joe LIE-berman cost AL Gore the presidency, lets not repeat that mistake.

Everything Obama does puts McCain one step closer to winning. I am sure this was one Rovian plot to get rid of Hillary, the best candidate and the worst threat to McCain. Well, now ya got Obama and the stench offa him is extreme. Doesn’t matter who he picks.

Kaine, Biden, Hagel, Richardson, ect, are all great picks if the race is going to be a runaway…The only thing wrong with them is they can’t get Obama a state or many votes…So if it looks like a landslide, any one of them is a winner…But if it’s close, the only person that can win him states and pick-up a ton of votes is….Well, I won’t mention HER name…

Given the complexity of the job and the issues that accompany it, no one person is really experienced enough to be president. The vice president alone cannot close the gap. What’s needed is an intelligent person who exhibits leadership, diplomatic skills, sound judgment, reasonable temperament, and the analytical skill to visualize pros and cons for a wide range of policy options. We haven’t had those characteristics in a president for a long, long, time. A careful selection of cabinet members, White House staff, program directors, and other advisors –based on their expertise (and not cronyism or blind loyalty) — is what will make a difference. Obama fits the bill, and is the right candidate for the job.

Republicans have been in charge the last 6 years, Our country has been ran in the ground by Bush. Where did our leaders go wrong the past 6 years??? We should have been kicking ass in Afganistan instead of Iraq. A truly waist of american lives. God bless our troops. Justice will prevail when Bush is out of office.

I am horrified by the mindless hatred evinced in these comments. Such bigotry and hostility about Barack Obama, who has more brains in his pinky than John Hero McCain has in his head. McCain the War hero doesn’t make him automatically capable of leading our nation in a complex world.
If Abama loses, I won’t be surprised, having read comments as disgusting as the ones above.

Posted by: Jane Werner | August 3, 2008, 5:19 pm 5:19 pm

You know, I’m not totally down for Obama, BUT if you want to attack the man, at least do it intelligently. Quoting a psychic, mentioning a possible name change, several birth certificates or muslim upbringing are not real reasons why the man can’t be president, and sounds more like prejudice.
I’m def. dissapointed in the level of arguments that I’ve seen on this forum. It would be nice for once to have McCain supporters come up with arguments that don’t sound clipped from a cheap ultra-right wing conservative paper. Such out-of-touch arguments compromise the reputation of McCain supporters. You all can do better than that!
as for Obama supporters, they need to let go of the star/chuck norris mentality they’ve created, and quiz him/set expectations like the man who they expect to make key decisions for their nation for the next 4 years (if he does win). All this sudden obama worship might backfire once they realize that he was given a free ride, just based on his platform of “change”.
May the best man win!
