Leggo My Ego

The Republican National Committee launched another website attacking Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, today, this one poking fun at the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s perceived Herculean self-regard.

Interestingly, while other Republicans whine about a press corps that is allegedly in the tank for Obama, the RNC’s new website — "Obama Audacity Watch"  — uses myriad press clips from the major networks and other media organizations to prove their point that the lanky Illinoisan who seeks to control the Western World has a big ego.

Examples of the presumptive’s presumptuousness include Obama’s mock presidential seal, replacing the American flag on the tail wing of his plane with an enormous Obama "O," his use of a video of his Berlin rally to help raise campaign cash, his curious projection that he would be president for "eight to ten years," and other examples.

But none of these attacks by McCain or the GOP is really sticking. Sure, Obama has a big ego. But what about McCain or other Presidents in the past? It’s such a finesse shot at him that it probably won’t be a big deal.

A legend in his own presumptuous mind! You can’t get your arm around his ego to even leggo of it! Obama thinks all of America’s hopes, dreams, aspirations are rolled up in one man – him! Pray God that the saying ‘Pride cometh before a fall’ is a true one!

“I wish to thank the Republican party for their nomination and now I’d like to present my pick for VP, Ted Stevens, the former Senator from Alaska.
He’s already in an undisclosed location.

I’m sorry
Reagan
Kennedy
Clinton
Bush Jr.
don’t you kind of HAVE to have an ego…
and doesn’t EVERYBODY already know that?
so who cares…
it’s about who can lead…
seems to me Obama does a pretty good job being down to earth when the world is stepping up and screaming for America to pick him as President.
Are you kidding…I’d have an ego.
The funny thing is where does Hannity and Rush’s ego come from? lol

Can someone just wake me when the election is over?
This has been the longest presidential campaign in the history of the world, and I cannot believe that we have 100 days more + 400 million in Barack Obama TV advertising to endure before its over, and the perennial hopefuls can begin campaigning for 2012.
I just can’t absorb any more, I made up my mind months ago, just please let it end soon.

I like this one:
“I’m surprised at how finely calibrated every single word was measured. I wasn’t saying anything I hadn’t said before, that I didn’t say a year ago or when I was a United States senator,” said Obama, who is still a senator from Illinois. The greedy republicans are Toast. They are about to lose another Senator. The Alaska Republican, Stevens, was charged Tuesday with scheming to conceal thousands of dollars worth of gifts from a major employer in his state, a company on whose behalf he sometimes intervened in Washington. He goes on trial tomorrow. This will only add to the democrats advantage this fall.

Talk about a BIG EGO… OMG… Put McCains and Bush on that list first. McCain..I am right about this and that and this and that. And all along what he is suppose to right about turns out to be a lie. Just like Bush!

Posted by: becky | July 30, 2008, 1:48 pm 1:48 pm

It’s been obvious since the debate with Clinton that the ego and presumption would be Obama’s achilles heel. His tapping Edwards on the shoulder condescendingly spoke volumes about the weakness in his character.
If his handlers weren’t prepared for this, they were blind. McCain’s campaign is getting the distance right now and beginning to turn the internet tricks on their heads. The problem of flamboyance and ‘rock star status’ is the ease with which it can be lampooned.
Remember this is a country that thrives on Entertainment tonight.

“Barack Obama is a spiritual leader. The world needs spiritual light, and it is throgh the soul that problems will be solved. This is true for both individuals and nations. Obama can become a very good channel for spiritual light…”
Seriously, this is from a post on Obama’s own website!!! How can you reason with this? He believes he is the Messiah, and fools all over believe it too!!
By the way, where’s Obama’s birth certificate? No, not the Photoshop fake posted online, the real paper copy we’ve never seen!! Oh, right, he sprung up from a volcano in Hawaii, riding a unicorn, that’s why there’s no birth certificate…

Of course Obama’s ego is huge. Who else with such a slim resume would have even considered running for president? Too bad so many people fell for Axelrod’s marketing of this bit of fluff.

“I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions” Barack Obama declared in front of House Democrats yesterday. LOL
That’s what happens when you start using what you’re peddling. A case of severe Kool Aid intoxication!!
LOL

DoughBoy, does his website really say that? Wow, this dude’s been watching too much Oprah. The two of them should start their own country and leave the rest of us alone!

Posted by: marylou | July 30, 2008, 2:25 pm 2:25 pm

Yawn. Well, they had to try it, I suppose. I believe that a majority of the American people will watch the debates and make up their hearts and minds based on who has a positive, coherent vision for America. I’m still waiting to hear what John McCain’s vision is.

Those who would put their trust, hopes, and dreams in Obama, beware. Obama himself said it best in his book -
“I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripe project their own views. As such I am bound to disappoint some, if not all of them.”
Nothing during this campaign has negated the authenticity of these words. Obama is indeed little more than an empty vessel that spouts pretty words. Attractive but ultimately disappointing.

His “this is OUR moment”, “this is OUR time” line has become pretty standard to Obama speeches. If he’s including all of us in that “OUR” – that’s a pretty big ego. It implies that we – as a country – have been waiting for a messiah; and he’s it. If he’s not including all of us – that’s not so egomaniacal – but it is kind of troubling. Someone should ask him what he means exactly.

Obama at UNITY 08 yesterday:
“I personally would want to see our tragic history, or the tragic elements of our history, acknowledged,” the Democratic presidential hopeful said.
“I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it’s Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds.”

As the Daily Show pointed out last night, McCain’s ads have the words “President McCain.” And Obama’s presumptuous? McCain rides around in golf carts with ex-presidents, wearing $500 loafers, flies in his owm jet, and owns 11 homes. And Obama’s elitist? McCcain repeatedly tells his pre-selected town hall audiences that only he had the “courage and judgment” to advocate for the surge. Every day he credits himself with winning the Iraq war. Yet Obama has the ego problem?

You can meet Obama backstage in Denver!!A unique opportunity to be in his presence!! But this offer is only good through tomorrow, so you gotta ACT NOW:
“If you make a donation in any amount before midnight on July 31st, you could be selected to travel to Denver for the last two days of the convention — including the huge event at the open-air stadium on the final night.
Ten supporters from all over the country will be selected to go Backstage with Barack.
We’ll provide airfare, accommodations, and two days of convention activities for each supporter and their guest — including a private meeting with Barack before his historic speech.”
They forgot to mention one little detail, to go to the convention they will make you pledge allegiance to Obama and go to do the “good work”, recruiting relatives and friends.

I for one am watching that they are reporting that Kaine is on the move…and if he picks Kaine
(a punch in the collective gut of his supporters…anti gay rights, anti-choice, anti stem cell and no back up foreign policy…all for his own friend and fellow harvard grad/Kansas guy)
then I will believe obama is not the guy I thought he was…
I really am sick to my stomach over the idea that he is ging to pick Kaine.
and if McCain picks a more liberal VP like Ridge I will be thinking long and hard about my past year and a half…
ugh

Kaine represents change for no reason…but the sake of change and that was not what IObama said he was.
I am sick to my stomach so I hope this is a ruse…
otherwise this is a sad day.

Doughboy-
Where is this comment that was posted on Obama’s website? I looked for it, and didn’t find it. But, I’m pretty sure that Mr. Obama didn’t write it himself, and he has no control over what someone else believes about him.
Do you want to know what people were saying when Bush was re-elected in 2004? “He must have been God’s candidate!” Part of that is because he made religion central to his re-election bid. But no one ever accused Bush of being haughty or thinking that he is the messiah, even though he specifically played to that type of demographic.
So shame on you for putting up an opinion post as if it is something that Obama wrote himself about himself. And shame on anyone who just takes your word for it and doesn’t do the research themselves. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY NO ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO IN ELECTIONS- EVERYONE EXPECTS SOMEONE ELSE TO DO THEIR WORK!!!
If you really want to know what a candidate stands for, stop b!tching, stop reading blogs for your information and START looking some stuff up- and it would do you some good to look at the opponents materials, too. But most importantly, you have to do it yourself, so that you can come to your own conclusions. Yeah, there’s alot of junk out there, and no one likes to sift through it, but, seriously folks, this is for the President of the United States- it’s VERY IMPORTANT for all of us, and therefore, we should all make the effort.
And as far as the statements that he must think he’s the messiah because he says things like “this is OUR moment”, that is clearly up to interpretation. I , myself, think that he is trying to say that we can do it together, which goes along with his statements (that are on his website- here’s the link
it’s at the bottom of the page which is, ironically, about his beliefs on faith)
that we all have an individual responsibility to make America better- that government cannot do it alone. To me, it sounds like he’s trying to be inclusive, not that he’s trying to make himself seem better than us.
And, come on now, people- so what if he is a confident. Do you want a mealymouthed wimp for a president? really?

Posted by: Jason | July 30, 2008, 3:43 pm 3:43 pm

beside hubris being unappealing(though i can’t help thinking that letting it run amok is a campaign strategy) the obama ego might clash with other colossal egos sure to inhabit the administration. the conflict would be counterproductive and inevitable.

Hmmm- let’s see if this works- it’s the link I tried to post in my original posting.

Don’t blame him. He says it on his slogan:” Change you can believe in”
He can change US into 57 states.
The president can serve up to 10 years.
What else?

Inflate your tires! We’ll be out of the oil crisis in no time. Don’t credit me for this wisdom. It’s all fresh from the mouth of Senator Obama, without his teleprompter.

Rather than informing the public on McCain’s international and domestic policies, the RNC is instead personally attacking Obama using pop psychology cliches. What a campaign! BTW, isn’t writing that a US president controls the Western world somewhat of an overstatement?

Posted by: kat | July 31, 2008, 1:43 am 1:43 am

Obama needs a reality check. Many Americans want a president not a “symbol”. His ego really is out of control. Has his campaign already forgotten that they claimed Clinton was sunk by her “inevitability”. Obama would be making a big mistake to begin believing his own press.
