Liberal Group: Media Hearts McCain, not Obama

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: Will the real media darling please stand up?

With Sen. John McCain mocking the press’ often positive coverage of Sen. Barack Obama, a liberal watchdog group is up with an ad of its own — taking the opposite tack.

In a new ad to run on cable stations, Media Matters for America argues that McCain — not Obama — is the favored candidate of the press. The ad splices together comments by prominent media figures on the press’ favorable relationship with the Arizona Republican — and features a cartoon version of McCain picking flower pedals while saying, "They love me, they love me not."

"The press loves McCain — we’re his base," MSNBC’s Chris Matthews says in a clip used in the ad.

Matthews was among the journalists featured prominently in the McCain campaign Web video released last week, saying favorable things about Obama.

The media has given john mccain a free ride so why does he whine he should be happy the media doesnt report all of his gaffes as well as his voting records instead of complaning about the media he should be thanking them well wheres the so called liberal media????

!
That seems to be an idea that is hard to support. Anyone see the picture of the ONE reporter greeting McCain in NH?

Posted by: Wade | July 29, 2008, 11:45 am 11:45 am

The press covers for McCain. CBS edited his interview to make it make sense. How many other times has the press done something like that? McCain is frequently making foolish statements about which country does or does not exist, which countries share a border, which group is sponsoring terrorists, etc. yet you’ll be hard pressed to find those comments in the press.
Obama is more exciting so he gets more press time. Press is an entertainment business after all. On the other hand, the press projects a better vision of McCain than he is providing.

wade
McCain consistently was positively positioned in the media…
It’s one thing to get a lot fo attention…but this is not like some starlet…
it is about how much positive vs. negative press you get.
and mcCain doesn’t get a lot of negative press…they tip toe around him.
They trash obama almost as much as they hype him…so as much attention as he gets …it’s a wash.
McCain gets a love letter while he calls out the refs falsely every other minute.
You ever play a pick-up game where the guy is always calling every issue in his own favor just because he is losing. That is McCain.

Posted by: dl | July 29, 2008, 11:50 am 11:50 am

Sure they like McCain. That’s the reason all the news anchors went with BHO on his phony trip. Pretty simple!

Posted by: S | July 29, 2008, 11:52 am 11:52 am

Obama doesn’t visit wounded soldiers because he didn’t want to make them political. Really, is there anybody in the whole world who believes such tripe!

Posted by: S | July 29, 2008, 11:54 am 11:54 am

this guy just changed his position on withdrawal……he was giving Obama and Hillary hell when they were proposing this in the primary……..seems very biased…..Obama is no media darling….they flock around him so everyone is present when he gaffes

Posted by: Country folk | July 29, 2008, 11:54 am 11:54 am

S
the news anchors went on that trip as much to catch Obama in a gaffe as they did to cover an international trip where they knew thousands were going to be waving American flags and world leaders may be praising America.
The gaffes didn’t happen…the flags and praising did.
(which they didn’t when McCain went surprise surprise…so please stop calling out the refs on false pretense)

Posted by: dl | July 29, 2008, 11:55 am 11:55 am

McCain is lucky they don’t cover him more…if they did …every day would be a cleanup of his message and gaffes.
Mccain could not take all the attention with all the scrutiny…
and that is the truth…and repubs know it.

If the media believe performs as its required, then they do not need to hear any complaints from either of the candidates and put in account.
If they do, then there is something wrong in their performance!

Posted by: Peace | July 29, 2008, 11:58 am 11:58 am

Take a look at the ABC politics page. Most of Obama`s coverage is negative. Most of them he`s been attacked by McCain who has no plan on his own.

You can go back and forth with this all you want but Obama gets all the news because he is more intresting than a grumpy old man. The press prints what people want to see, thats why we consantly hear about who Miley cyrus is hooked up with or how crazy Brittany Spears is this week. Obama is the new guy so they will focus more on him. I think Mcsame/Mclame, should be happy because if he were in the spotlight the Iraq/Pakastan border might get over ran!

Posted by: Joe | July 29, 2008, 12:14 pm 12:14 pm

Harry can you name those bands that spoke? I want to check them out they have to be up there with the Stones or the Beatles to draw that many people.

Posted by: joe | July 29, 2008, 12:16 pm 12:16 pm

It’s a distraction, accusing the press of ‘liberal’ or ‘Obama’ bias. Neither is true but if McCain keeps saying it, and the press keeps reporting it it approaches truthiness. It’s a great tactic for deflecting honest reporting. Bush has done it for years and The Press falls for it every time!

Posted by: thebob.bob | July 29, 2008, 12:28 pm 12:28 pm

McCain should be thankful for the lack of attention considering his horrendous voting record on veterans’ support legislation. How dare he claim to be the candidate of veterans when he systematically voted against every piece of legislation meant to improve the benefits for veterans?!

Posted by: hang | July 29, 2008, 12:35 pm 12:35 pm

There is a different benchmark being used for Democratic and Republican nominees.
For the Democrat, the bar is on perfect, so nearly everything he does (anything less than perfect) is reported as a negative.
The bar for the Republicans is so low for their nominee it is actually on the ground now for McCain. So whatever McCain does is reported as neutral or positive.
It is a double standard that we shouldn’t be surprised at.

Posted by: Truth Matters | July 29, 2008, 12:35 pm 12:35 pm

The media for far too long has been giving McCain a free pass!
Just as an example, none of the major networks discredited McCain’s “Obama doesn’t support the troops” ad. That ad was the biggest bunch of crap that the McCain camp has put out so far. It’s riddled with lies, and the media just doesn’t even make the effort to challenge it.
Everything Obama says and does is parsed beyond belief. And in the meanwhile McCain is making unreported gaffe after unreported gaffe.

Posted by: Jennifer | July 29, 2008, 12:42 pm 12:42 pm

Here you go Joe … One of the bands was called Reamonn. Reamonn is a very popular German rock band. They were nominated for the Best Live act in 2007 for the German equivalent of the Grammy.
But I am sure most of the people were there to see an American political candidate give a speech.

I think the media SHOULD give McCain the coverage he is asking for, fair, honest and to the point of every word he says, every hour on the hour, 7 days a week. I will give McCain one week and Obama will have this thing wrapped up.

All major media venues are controlled by big corporations. Is there any doubt that they covered the lies by Bushco? Corporate greed is the base of our economy meltdown. The time to take the government back is now.
McCain the pseudo hero is going to continue the eight years of helI we are going through—7 years of war, 4660 dead young Americans and rising, 9 trillion $$$ of debt and rising, and still no bin Laden in sight. Obama the pseudo changer is going to sacrifice his principles just to get elected—he’s moving to the right as we speak. No more two-party democracy mockery. We need a true third party that belongs to the people, NOT big corporations. It’s time to take back the government – vote for someone who’s not afraid of taking a stand on OUR behalf, and is not into big corporate interests like the other two.

Nine votes against our troops and McCain is unscathed. The GOP blames the liberal media for favoritism as a simple ploy. Real journalist seem to lack the fortitude to to aggressively vet this candidate. Gaffes, misquotes and blatant lies go unchecked. It worked when Bush, Cheney, and McCain first wanted to go into Iraq, seems to be working again. Hold McCain to the light, things aren’t right.

I and many other even handed people, has been aware of the negative slant given to the coverage of Obama, 72% Negative. The MSM blew it’s responsibility when it came to giving the American people when reporting on the lead up to the Iraq war. The MSM has a journalistic ethics code, to give fair an unbiased news, the reporting of truths & facts has been truly lacking in
this Presidential Campaign. Given all these Obstacles, My ticket is allready punched for the Obama’s train. Obama lays out a very intelligent and doable plan to resuscitate the middle class, by saving people through renegotiation of mortgage contracts that allow people to refinance affordable rates. McCain only attacks Obama, he has called him many derogatory names, however President Bush,Republican Presumed Nominee John McCain, Iraqi PM Maliki, Afghanistan President, All the major Israeli leaders, every European leader that was visited in recent trip, supported Obama’s Foreign Policy Strategy. What are McCains plan, to clarify I mean McCain 2000 or 2008?

who the hell are they kidding. the media is in love with obama. the new york times even refused to publish an opinion editorial by McCain because it didnt reflect there views. they should shut up or start being fair.

Posted by: deek | July 29, 2008, 1:13 pm 1:13 pm

Obama is under scrutiny every move he makes- often in a negative way. McCain has, for some unknown reason, been given a get out of jail for free card. Don’t dare say the media is liberal. That McCain gets away with some of the mud he’s thrown, while the people are not told how often he’s voted against anything that benefits the welfare of the troops, is beyond me, except for the fact that the media assumes the public won’t dig for the truth themselves and that simple, thirty-second soundbites can sway their judgement in favor of staying whatever course they’ve been instructed to present. Unfortunately, the media might be right and as a result, lies, misrepresentations and deceit skew peoples’ judgement. The mud this man throws will probably stick. This is the same media that let the current administration get away with what’s been done since 2000 when a little bit of oversight and integrity could have saved Americans from all the misery they face today. Dig! Investigate! Report! The media doesn’t do any of this, but a few years later, when people begin to waken, it will produce finely-crafted little specials about whether they should feel guilty about their failing in the job of informing the people. McCain would not stand under scrutiny; the media knows this and does nothing. In an environment where lies and deceit thrive, and the media refrains from doing its job, there is no democracy.

Since you know Senator Obama so well, are you sure he doesn’t speak any other langs? And on that point how do we know you met him? And who are you to judge and call someone a lightweight. I’m sure somewhere someone feels the same about you.

WOW. Half of those comments (when heard within the context that they were originally said) are actually NEGATIVE comments. It’s a SPIN TACTIC, and every political campaign is guilty of using spin tactics to twist stories about their opposition–EVERY ONE.
So what can we all learn from this?? Do your research and don’t be duped into believing everything you hear.

This is so funny, Obama and his drones will say or do anything to try and fool the American people. Let’s just hope everyone is smart enough to see it. For them to say that McCain is the darling of the media is such a joke, it is almost sickening.

Art, Obama might make some small gaffs like saying there are 57 states but at least he knows the correct timeline for the surge in iraq. or for that matter even what a surge is because McCain clearly has no idea because he is now trying to say the the “surge” or increse of troops actually started 6 months before the tatic of the surge was even considered.

Hey Fempharoah08,
>Since you know Senator Obama so well, >are you sure he doesn’t speak any other >langs?
Yes. On July 11, after he made that statement about Americans not learning other languages he said:
“I don’t speak a foreign language. It’s embarrassing!”
>And on that point how do we know you >met him?
You don’t. But in NH, during the primary, ANYONE who wants to meet a candidate gets the opportunity so it’s not a stretch. I’m not saying we went out to lunch, just that I met him and observed him. My lightweight comment was based as much on watching him in the debates and on the news and his major gaffes–which you didn’t address.
>And who are you to judge and call >someone a lightweight. I’m sure >somewhere someone feels the same about >you.
Of that I have no doubt. Fortunately, I am not running for president. Unfortunately for the rest of the, Messiah Obama is. (not that I think much of McCain, I might vote 3rd party or sit this one out, but at least he’s not being touted as the Second Coming).

And the Obama worship reminds me of 1932. Well spoken, charismatic leader promising to transform his country is eerily like Germany 1932. Sometimes I think he’s just a slick pol, others something more sinister–transformative as he likes to say.

This study is absolute gibberish but if the lib talking heads keep saying it long enough, they hope people will believe them. How about the USA Today/Gallup poll that came out today showing 39% of people believe the coverage of Obama is unfairly biased towards him, whereas 12% think the bias in favor of McCain. The American people are not fooled.

Posted by: Art | July 29, 2008, 3:40 pm 3:40 pm

McCain gaffes that the media has overlooked/ignored:
1. McCain doesn’t even know who is in charge in Iran.
2. Iraq/Iran, Sunni/Shia: McCain doesn’t know the difference.
3. McCain still thinks Czechoslovakia (which split into two countries in 1993) exists.
4. McCain wrongly claimed that Baghdad was mostly normal.
5. McCain called Baghdad market safe.
6. McCain can’t even remember how little he knows about the economy.
7. McCain falsely claimed he never requested earmarks.
8. McCain falsely claimed that tax cuts increased government revenues.
9. McCain’s claim to be untainted by special interest money is false.
10. McCain thinks there’s an “Iraq-Pakistan border” when none exists.
11. He said told Wolf Blitzer that 16 months was a good timetable for withdrawl, then on ABC’s “This Week,” he denied saying it.
12. CBS edited out his gaffe on the Anbar Awakening and put another response in its place. This highlights the fact that he doesn’t know the chronology of the surge.
13. In discussing the starvation in Darfur, McCain mistakenly placed the region in Somalia rather than in Sudan.
If Obama made even one of these mistakes it would be all over the news. So for all those people yammering on that Obama is the media’s darling should put a cork in it.

Why are Republicans afraid of being seen with President Bush. McCain allows the President raise millions of Dollars in Campaign funds for him, however he complains & disparges him at every turn. If he disagreed with so much of the Bush’s policies and doctrine, How come he is not appalled to take Bush’s funds. Lack of ethics, I guess. There are a substantial number of Republicans stating that the will not attend the GOP convention. As reported by many sources, McCain does not have the temperament or judgement to be POTUS.
Years of expierience, maybe. It’s like the woman with 4 ex-husbands. Lots of expierience but no Judgement.

The liberal PRESS myth was an extra bonus for KARL ROVE, GROVER NORQUIST, TOM DELAY, and other losers who emerged from the 1980′s college cocaine scene to plan on turning the media right wing. They did and we lost…the liberal media myth is an extra brainwashing bonus that the saps at the media give them because they will never live up to or admit their failure. I enjoy watching the slide of abc, nbc, cbs, and their cable kids, fox, msnbc, cnn, and the whole gamut of them. It’s horror-movie stuff, and it’s getting more chilling the angrier he gets. All Obama’s got to do is make him really mad, and there’s something… CHILDREN, FLEE! about it. What a joke! Millions of people have protested the blatant media bias of CNN and MSNBC for Obama, especially in the Primary. Now that the opponent is McCain, they know how many more people are scrutinizing their reporting. Of course, they have lost a lot of viewers because of their bias. Splice the stories any way you choose. To say the MSM is not still pushing for Obama to be the next President is a joke. Wasn’t that a great rock star tour many of them took with him to Europe? We could have done with a little less coverage of his attempt to be a John Kennedy. It took the McCain campaign to effectively point out that he somehow could not visit the wounded in Germany.
It is a little more difficult for the press to make McCain look stupid. He is a man with credentials and experience, and he is a man! One has real substance, the other is totally lacking.

The Press is afraid of John McCain. Yes they are! This man is running for President of the United States of America and the eyes of the res of the world are upon him. John McCain is 72 going on 100. He is sick, senile and short-tempered, bordering on dementia. He is a lucky son of a gun that Obama is digging into his medical records, because the M$100question the media must seek to clarify should be:Is John McCain emotionally and medically fit for the most stressful job in the world, the President of the United States, and Commander in Chief?”
I think No? What do YOU think

Posted by: exatlantic | July 30, 2008, 2:55 am 2:55 am

I keep hearing people say Obama gets more press. This is true. However, more press doesn’t equally better press. Obama getting more press, also means he gets more negative press. The media is in the business of making money, not picking presidents. Obama’s the more exciting candidate. Even people voting against him wants to see him cause they think he’ll make “mistakes”. I think the media is actually hurting, which couls also desribe why he’s not pulling away in the polls.

Dude save those dumb comments for someone else. McCain has said more Gaffes than anyone in this campaign and they seem to be edited out of the news, i.e Katie Couric. He doesn’t have a leg to stand on, he can’t win, therefore the right wing media that we have today will try there best to make him the presumptuous guy. This dumb media accuses Obama of acting too presidential when going overseas. Don’t you want a president to have that confidence? I know I would. He was also criticized for not going there.
And what kind of questions these poll groups are asking. He doesn’t lead when it comes to foreign policy, however he leads in a very large margin on handling relations with other countries. The media is only making theirselves look foolish. People are smarter than that.
I think they like the message, they just don’t like the messenger.
