McCain Proposes Additional Troops for Afghanistan

ABC News’ Ron Claiborne Reports: Senator Barack Obama’s campaign attacked Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) for "flip-flopping" when he called for more troops to be sent to Afghanistan to deal with increasing violence and instability.

On Tuesday, McCain proposed sending at least three brigades of troops to Afghanistan. His advisers said later they should be an unspecified combination of U.S. and NATO forces.

"Thanks to the success of the surge, these forces are becoming available, and our commanders in Afghanistan must get them," McCain said in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Obama campaign attacked McCain for changing his position from opposing additional U.S. forces to agreeing with Obama’s proposal to send more forces to Afghanistan. Obama said last year he would send two combat brigades — about 10,000 troops — to Afghanistan. McCain had said for months that no additional U.S. troops were needed in there. But he had long been open to the possibility that conditions on the ground might require additional forces, both from NATO and the U.S.

In December 2006, during a visit to Afghanistan, the Associated Press reported that McCain said he would favor sending more American troops there "if it’s necessary."

"I’m sure we would be agreeable, but the focus here is more on training the Afghan National Army and the police, as opposed to the increased U.S. troop presence," McCain said at the time.

In February 2007, in a speech to the Munich Conference on Security Policy, McCain spoke of a need for NATO to beef up its military presence in Afghanistan.

"It has been a long five and a half years since the crumbling of Taliban rule," McCain said. "In the United States, at least, Afghanistan has moved off the front pages of newspapers and magazines, replaced by the dire situation in Iraq, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and North Korea’s weapons tests. But Afghanistan is anything but yesterday’s news. In fact, the stakes there have never been higher… NATO members can help ensure that we keep the Taliban on their heels by at least matching the U.S. troop increase of 3,000."

One of McCain’s chief foreign affairs advisers, Randy Scheunemann, said Tuesday  that a greater U.S.-NATO military presence is now necessary because of the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan.

I think it is amazing how Bush and McCain are doing everything Obama has said he will do if elected president. Maybe Bush should have spoken to Obama a few years ago.

What this article failed to mention was that McCain flip-flopped twice in the same day. First, he said that he would send three US brigades to Afghanistan, then when people began to question where he was going to actually get the troops from, (realizing it would result in troop withdrawl from Iraq)he said that NATO troops would be deployed as well.

How is John McCain a copycat, when in fact, the Senate committee Obama was supposed to be chairman of was assigned to look into getting more NATO troops for Afghanistan? That was how many years ago? Even in the primary debates, Obama had not even called a meeting. Saying Obama was the first to call for more troops is a joke. Obama’s camp loves to play with their artificial stances after he has continually backtracked on every issue. Who wants a leader who has become well known for changing and “refining” his previous stances? Obama cannot be trusted to make any firm decisions we can count on. McCain has continually worked to assure success with our missions in the Middle East. This report, in fact, reveals that McCaing spoke for increases for Afghanistan in December of 2006, and February of 2007. He has been constant in his opinions of what is needed and necessary. He is on record, and has consistently stood up for successful efforts. Obama is a waffling latecomer. In fact, he is “just words”.

McCain’s new slogan should be “FOLLOW THE LEADER”. Can this candidate possess an independent and original thought? Honestly, I know that Obama has has his own issues in the past regarding flip flopping, but this is ridiculous.

McCain: “because the situation has been deteriorating?”
The situation in Afghanistan has been deteriorating for a couple years now! Thanks, Johnny McComeLately.

But Iraq essentially blocked any move to increase troop presence in Afghanistan. We can’t expect everyone else to clean up our mess while we fiddle with our new toy.

It’s amusing to see Obama try to act like he knows anything about anything. Especially when it comes to foreign affairs. He’s so clueless.
President McCain – get use to it. The polls are now tied up and the novelty has worn off for Obama. People are wising up.

BO needs to keep his trap shut- he has no right to slam anyone! McCain is doing the next logical step- to move more troop to Afghanistan since the surge there has worked so well. BO remains an empty, worthless and meaningless suit who is running as the Sierra Club candidate. People get ready for $10/gallon gas!

There is nothing wrong with McCain changing his mind about what to do in Afghanistan due to a change of events. That is not flip-flopping, that is what any leader should do. What Obama has done is flip-flop because he took a tough stance on Iraq based on his promise to supporters to get out of Iraq by saying that he would have all the troops out in 16 months. Now he is changing his basic position which got him the nomination. I don’t even understand how Obama and his supporters don’t see the difference. If McCain had said we should be out of Afghanistan within 16 months, then his position might be flip flopping, but he has never said that.

These latest developments make Bush/McCain look like foreign policy amateurs. Obama has been talking about increased forces in Afghanistan for over a year. Bush/McCain are finally ready to support that policy now that it appears Afghanistan is coming apart at the seams. If Obama had been CIC during the past year, Afghanistan would probably be more under control by now. Also, the Bush administration is now ready to meet with Iran with no pre-conditions as Obama has recommended since the beginning. Obama is now taking the lead on foreign policy issues. Bush/McCain are performing a delayed reaction.

I am tired of hearing about “the other guy” flip-flopping. Today it’s the Obama campaign chastising Mr. McCain for changing his stance on sending troops to Afghanistan. Last week it was the McCain campaign calling out Mr. Obama for changing his stance on the troops in Iraq.
How many of you would like to have your guy stand by his first thought no matter what events took place? Personally I would prefer to have a leader who is open to changing their stance as the situation changes.
Attention candidates!!! Please stop telling me why I should not vote for the other guy and start telling me why I should vote for you!

I was at Senator McCain’s town hall meeting in Albuquerque yesterday, and after an hour and a half of clear, concise, and well thought answers, I’m convinced that John McCain would make the best leader of this great country of ours. It’s easy to take out a sound bite here or there in the negative, but in the big picture, he’s the best man for the job.

The economy is the number one issue and all agree it is due to the policies of the present administration. Macain scores far lower than Obama on the economy. Foreign Policy is in shambles and most americans blame the current administration. Macain is a carbon copy of the Bush philosophy and it is evident to most Americans. The war was going badly up until just a few months ago and now since things have improved, its “not going that badly”! Macain is a simple continuation of these failed/poor policies! How then is Obama running so close in the polls with Macain when by all standards he is a much better candidate? Twist and turn as we will, the answer is clear! There are a whole lot of Americans that can be led, like Lambs, to believe anything! Racism is alive and well and living in America!

Yes BushCo failed, but what did Dems do? Chucklenut led us straight to hell and Dems followed him with their spineless bodies as usual. We are tired of being sold out by corporate greed that’s leading the economy melt down just to make the 1% richer with no ethics or accountability whatsoever, while the other party bent over and did nothing to stand up to the BushCo. It’s time to take the government back to the people. We need to stop the two-party sell out now!

And on substance, there is basically no difference btwn Obama’s and Hillary’s. McCain is just the same old Bush ####. Everything from economy to National Security!
Just curious, is there any one who supports McCain that can really come up with a substantive arguement that promotes McCain? All they do is try to tear up Obama, but nothing that promotes their candidate. Could it be because McCain & his policies are just TOO WEAK and TOO OLD!

To all the McCain supporters,
I would like to know if your presidential candidate has already issued a statement to denounce his mentor (George Bush) on his new position, agreeing for the first time that Barack Obama was right (once again) when he said that we need to talk to nations and leaders like Iran (Armadinejad). Has McCain called Bush’s decision to talk to Iran on Saturday July 19, 2008, surrender or waving the white flag? Or, seeing that his mentor has flip-flopped he too will toe the line and flip-flop on talking to our enemies?

Adm Mullen also agrees with Senator Obama:
Navy Adm. Michael G. Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said insurgent Taliban and extremist forces in Afghanistan have become “a very complex problem,” one that is tied to the extensive drug trade, a faltering economy and the porous border with Pakistan. Violence in Afghanistan has increased markedly over recent weeks, with June the deadliest month for U.S. troops since the war began in 2001.
“I don’t have troops I can reach for, brigades I can reach, to send into Afghanistan until I have a reduced requirement in Iraq,” Mullen told reporters at the Pentagon. “Afghanistan has been and remains an economy-of-force campaign, which by definition means we need more forces there.”
========
This means we need to get out of Iraq to have enough troops to effectively fight the Taliban and AQ in Afghanistan. That has been Obama’s position from the very beginning.

You are a middle aged male with a wife, 3 kids, a dog, a mortgage and a car payment…Do you want your 80 year old senile grandfather managing your finances??? NO…
You are a small business owner with all the problems of running a small business in this day and age..Will you hire an 80 year old senile manager to run the business?? NO…
You are a multi-national company with billions of dollars at stake..Will you hire a senile 80 year old CEO to run the company??? NO..
Why would America hire a senile 80 year old man to be President and attempt to run the country???? NO..Not today, Not tomorrow and NOT in November..

Five years of the media’s emphasis on Iraq has now backfired. It’s going to be hard to spin everything on Afghanistan now.
The American people know that the “surge” successfully saved a new democracy in the middle east. Hussein is no longer in power.

Don’t give McCain too hard of a hard time. He is finally saying the right thing on Afghanistan – put more soldiers into the fight to beat down Al Queda and Bin Laden where they really exist.
He’s finally listening to Senator Obama who has been saying that for years.
It is funny, though, how McCain tried to one-up Obama. You know, Obama says to add 2 combat brigades, so I’ll say add 3 brigades.
The question, John, is where do you plan to find those American combat soldiers, since you plan to tie our soldiers down in Iraq for 50 or 100 years.
And how does that all square with the plans you and Bush have for another war against Iran?
This is the real world Senator McCain – not Fantasy Land.

Barack Obama wins in November, independent voters will decide this election and McCain and Bush now are basically following Obama’s approach.
Regardless of what a few right-wing nuts say on the internet most independent voters will take an objective look at the judgement of the two candidate and Obama clearly wins.

NO DOUBT OBAMA REMAINS THE SMARTEST AMONG AVAILABLE AND SO CALLED EXPERIENCED CANDIDATES.SMARTNESS IS THE KEY TO LEADERSHIP AND GOOD COMMANDER IN CHIEF.OBAMA IS A MAN OF VISION AND WELL EDUCATED!HIS OPPONENTS ALWAYS GO BACK BEHIND THE WALLS AND BUY HIS IDEAS.BUSH AND McCAIN KNOW NOW THAT THEY MESSED UP OUR FOREIGN POLICY IN MANY WAYS DUE TO LACK OF SMARTNESS AND GOOD JUDGEMENT.THIS SHOWS EXPERIENCE IS PROVEN WRONG AND MUST NOT COUNT!IT IS VERY EMBARRASING THAT McCAIN LACKS VISIONS FOR LONGTERM SECURITY POLICY,VISIONS OBAMA HAS LAID OUT ON MANY OCCATION;LIKE WHAT NEED TO BE DONE WITH THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO DEAL WITH THE GLOBAL SECURITY AND ECONOMY SITUATION.McCAIN ON THE OTHER HAND WRONGLY COUNTS ON HIS SERVICE IN VIETNAM AS A POINT,HAS ALREADY ATTACKED RUSSIA VERBALLY AND THREATENED TO EJECT THEM OUT OF G8,AGAIN,A MOVE OBAMA HAS CONSIDERED UNWISE FOLLOWING MUCH MORE COMMON INTEREST QUESTION,WHERE AMERICA WILL BADLY NEED RUSSIA! NEVERTHELESS,MY FATHER TOO,EVEN YOUNGER AND MORE EDUCATED THAN McCAIN WHO ALSO IN VIETNAM,HAS A CLAIM HE TO BE COMMANDER IN CHIEF?WE ARE TALKING ABOUT McCAIN WHO OFTEN HAPPENED TO BE IN IRAQ,YET COULD NOT SIMPLY DIFFERNTIATE BETWEEN TWO WORDS;SHIIA AND SUNI !HE WAS FOR NEGOTIATING WITH A TERRORIST GROUP (HAMAS),BUT CRITICIZES OBAMA FOR OFFERING TALKS WITH ENEMY STATES WITH SOLID PREPERATIONS(diplomacy).YET HE AND BUSH HAVE ADOPTED OBAMA´S POLICY ON NORTH KOREA WITH SUCCESS!BUSH HAS JUST SENT HIS EGENTS ON TALKS WITH IRAN.LATEST,McCAIN NOW ACCEPTS OBAMA´S POLICY ON AFGHANISTAN WHICH HE HAS BEEN OPPOSED TO!MOST OF THESE ARE PARTLY MILITARY-LOGISTICS QUESTIONS WHICH OBAMA,THANKS HIS SMARTNESS GOT RIGHT!THIS IS WHAT IS REQUIRED OF A COMMANDER IN CHIEF.SURGE OR NO SURGE IN IRAQ,IF THE SHIA OR THE SUNIS WERE TO RISE AGAINST EACH OTHER THE SURGE WOULD STILL NOT HELP,IN A WORLD WHERE PEOPLE HAVE NO DIFFICULTY OF FACING OR TRIGGERING DEATH THEMSELVES.HOWEVER,IT IS VERY DISTURBING THAT McCAIN IS NOT UP TO DATE IN NURSARY AND PRIMARY LEVEL OF INTERNET TECHNOLOGY!A COULD BE PRESIDENT WHO CANNOT OPERATE A SIMPLE HARD AND SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY INVOLVING SIMPLE E-MAIL OR POWER-POINT OPERATION IS NOT FUNNY AT ALL,HE McCAIN CANNOT THEN COMPETE WITH ANY THIRD-WORLD PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ANY WHERE!THE SAME McCAIN CONFIRMS HE IS ZERO IN ECONOMICS AND NEEDS EDUCATION,AS IF HE IS READY TO ASSIMILATE THAT E=MC^2 AT A TIME THE THE ECONOMY NEEDS TO BE FIXED!HE LACKS THE REAL PERCEPTION THAT AMERICA HAS ECONOMICAL PROBLEMS,THEREFORE SAID “AMERICANS ARE BETTER OF.” THEREAFTER, SAID HIS ECONOMY TEACHER “AMERICANS ARE WHINERS AND COMPLAINERS” PHIL HIMSELF BEING A MILLIONARE AND McCAIN´S WIFE LOBBYST AND MILLIONARE,SUGGEST THERE IS NO DOUBT IF ELECTED, McCAIN WILL NOT ONLY BE INCAPABLE TO DELIVER BUT WILL SIMPLY REMAIN OUT OF TOUCH!FOR HIS GOAL IS JUST THE TITLE”MR PRESIDENT”.

This is a ridiculous subject. Recently things have changed on the ground. In 2007 when the Obama disciples are quoting MCCain, things were much different. You need to come to the light… MCCAIN 08

WE AMERICANS ARE PROUD OF OUR MEN AND WOMEN ANSWERING THE WRONG CALL BY A THOUGH EXPERIENCED BUT LESS INTELLIGENT
COMMANDER IN CHIEF BUSH,BACKED BY McCAIN,A BUSH´S LOOK ALIKE AS REGARDS IQ!THE BETTER BUT STILL A RISKY SITUATION IN IRAQ HAS BEEN EFFECTED MOSTLY BY THE WILLINGNESS OF THE IRAQI PEOPLE,NOT SO CALLED SURGE!IT WAS SINCE THE IRAQI LEADER,A SHIA,FORGED A BETTER RELATIONSHIP WITH ITS NEIGHBOUR IRAN,THAT THE CIRCUIT OF VIOLENCE HAS ALMOST SUCCESSFULLY BEEN BROCKEN!ON ONE SIDE A SHIA RADICAL LEADER THEN SUPPORTED BY IRAN TO DISTABILISE THE AMERICAN INDUCED GOVERNMENT ALSO HEADED BY A SHIA.IT IS THE SAME PEOPLE WITH GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR OWN NEIBOURHOOD AND TOPORGRAPHY EFFECTIVELY FOUGHT OUT ALQAIDA WHO HAPPENED TO BE THERE FOR THE FIRST TIME FOLLOWING McBUSH´S WAR.AND IF SUPPORTED WITH RESOURCES COULD ALWAYS DO SO EFFECTIVELY ALONE.THIS MEANS A REAL SUCCESS IN IRAQ CAN SUBSTANTIALLY BE MADE BY THE IRAQIS THEMSELVES AND ONLY THEY AND OUR SOLDIERS TRAINING THEM CONVENTIONALLY, CAN TAKE CREDICT FOR SUCCESS.THE SHIA GOVERNMENT LEADER GOT THE IRANIAN GOVERNMENT TO PUSH DOWN THE VIOLENCE IN THE COUNTRY ENTIRELY INCLUDING THE KILLING OF AMERICANS BY THE MILITANTS OF AL-SADER (MILITANT LEADER).AFTER ALL IT IS IN INTEREST OF ALL THE MEMBERS OF THIS EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE TO MAINTAIN ITS ANGLES OF 60 DEGREES EACH TO HELP ACHIEVE ITS COMMON GOALS.AMERICAN SOLDIERS HAVE BEEN HELPFUL IN RECONSTRUCTION AND UNIFICATION OF IRAQI FACTIONS INCLUDING THE ASSURANCE OF THE NATIONAL CAKE(OIL)TO ALL INCLUDING KURDS AND SUNIS!OBAMA´S AND THE IRAQI CALL FOR A PULLOUT WITH SOME POTENTIAL LEVEL OF IRAQI´S READINESS TO TAKE OVER WILL BEST SERVE OUR INTEREST AND ENHANCE OUR FOCUS ON BINLADEN AND HIS DISCIPLES IN AFGHANISTAN AS SUGGESTED BY SEN.OBAMA,A MOVE McCAIN STILL FLI-FLOPS ON!

Mccain is following Obama’s lead but it wont be long before Mccain flip flops back to his old Iraq talking points. Theres no doubt in my mind that Obama is best suited to be president of the 21 century. Mccain likes to talk about Obama’s trip to the Iraq but he confused Sunni and Shia while on the ground in Iraq. If I went into all of Mccains gaffes, and mistakes, Oh don’t forget the flip flops, I’ll be here all day. Obama 08

Bottom line – if Bush and the GOP hadn’t started an uncessessary war in Iraq, then we wouldn’t be having these problems in Afghanistan right now. Bush and his Republican lackeys diverted the focus, manpower and funds from the real war against Al Queda in Afghanistan to their fools’ errand in Iraq. And now we’re paying the price. McCain can flip flop all he wants, but the American people know better – and we will reject him and the failed Bush policies that he clings to in November.

McFlip or McFlop? I can’t keep track of how many times this guy changes his positions anymore. Maybe he really is going senile and just can’t remember what he really thinks about anything?

Posted by: Laura | July 18, 2008, 8:40 am 8:40 am

Does McCain remember any of his original positions any more? MFlipFlop strikes again.

Posted by: Macaca McCain | July 18, 2008, 8:45 am 8:45 am

See, McCain doesn’t really flip flop. It’s just that he doesn’t know what his position should be or what it was the last time he spoke. That’s why Joe Lieberman is always at his side, whispering in his ear. When Lieberman can’t be there, Cindy subs for him. It may be because of his advance age, senility and dementia has set in, or maybe he thinks because he never had to work a real job, he doesn’t really have to know all this either. I think the real issue is why isn’t there a maximum age limit for being President. You have it for many other professions, yet none for the most hardest, stressful, and demanding job in the world. I don’t get this.

I don’t know how Obama’s campaign hoodwinks people to believe anything that they want them to believe.
If you look into the details instead of just believing at face value what Obama says, McCain isn’t flip-flopping on anything.
- He was opposed to the Bush Tax Cuts because they weren’t accompanied with Budget Cuts (a very responsible position) and is for extending them because he’s not for tax increases and plans on decreasing the budget himself
-He’s been for increasing forces in Afghanistan for about 2 years, but he didn’t consider it a top priority. Now that the surge is successful and our troop levels can be lowered, he’s for relocating a portion of them to Afghanistan along with U.N. troops, what’s wrong with that?
-Obama has never even been to Afghanistan and i’m not sure about Iraq, what does he know? I’m sure that he’s gotten a lot of experience in his 2 years in the senate and his experience as a Community Organizer in Chicago where he takes too much credit for the work that he did.
-Obama has flip-flopped plenty of times:
-Campaign Finance and refusing public funds… while due to his outstanding fundraising efforts it is politically smart, it goes against the agreement at the beginning of the campaign
-His Hardcore stance on pulling out of Iraq is being “refined” to a more moderate position, now saying he’ll go back in if it’s necessary and adjust his timeframe based on advice from Generals. A better position? Yes, in my opinion, but that’s beside the point.
-From ’04 to now he’s switched his position on the legalization of pot (he was for it in ’04 and now is against it)
-His position on late term abortions has changed to include limitations due to “mental distress”
-He recently changed his position on the Foreign Intelligence Surveilance Act, which he was wholly against. He now voted for the bill which gives immunity to telecom companies that comply with the administration
While McCain has flip flopped on issues, he has a much more developed policy through his decades in service to this country than Obama’s few short years. Obama is just another politician trying to win an election.

LOL McShame is following Obama’s lead to the letter. He had no intention of going to Afghanistan until OBAMA made a firm stand. All politics aside Obama is more in tune with international needs. Obama’s foreign policy advisors are way ahead of the failed Bush, McSame lousy strategy. OBAMA will make a great leader and McSame should go home NOW, he is too old to try to get in touch with todays technology.
