McCain at the Sausage Haus
ABC News’ David Wright Reports: Today as his rival prepares to deliver a major address to the throngs in Germany, John McCain counter-programmed with a more modest event bound to invite comparisons. Obama was at the Tiergarten in Berlin, amid a sea of people. McCain was at "Schmidt’s Sausage Haus und Restaurant" in German Village, an enclave of Columbus, Ohio. McCain addressed about a half dozen Ohio small business owners in the historic village. "I’d love to give a speech in Germany," McCain said. "But I’d much prefer to do it as President." WATCH VIDEO OF MCCAIN AT THE SAUSAGE HAUS HERE. In front of the restaurant stands a cardboard cutout of a Bavarian man in lederhosen and Bavarian woman in a dirndl. The faces are cutout, so tourists can pop in their heads for photos. It’s unlikely McCain would stop for a souvenir snapshot, but he did shake hands with the crowd of lunchtime diners who seem excited to see him. He also sampled the Haus’ sausage and made a special point of ordering some chocolate cream puffs, a traditional German dessert, to go. "We love him," said Columbus resident Diane Woods. "I don’t know why Obama’s getting all this attention. McCain is right where he should be — in America," she said. "He graduated from the Naval Academy a year after my uncle did," said Roger Clark, who did not expect McCain’s visit. This event was hastily organized after the candidate’s planned visit to a Louisiana was cancelled due to the threat of hurricanes in the Gulf Coast.

Obama is getting a lot of media attention right now because he is MAKING NEWS!
McCain could have made some news ,(Presidential nominee heading into Hurricane) by not running in the other direction when he heard there was going to be bad weather in the South.
He is now reinforcing the idea that Republicans won’t show up anywhere until at least 5 days have passed since the bad weather.
Posted by: Truth Matters | July 24, 2008, 12:55 pm 12:55 pm
McCain should be careful about what he wishes for. Remember Obama’s foreign trip was basically because McCain forced him into it, although McCain wanted to be there as well (Not that that was ever going to happen) but the overseas trip has done as much as anything else could to help make Obama look Presidential. Meanwhile McCain has tramped around America looking as weak and out of the loop as any candidate could.

Here is the deal….If Obama’s trip was a flop, nobody would complain about the media’s over coverage. Get over it everybody. McCain has been in politics before I was born. We know everything about McCain. Let’s find out more about Obama and let the media keep that spotlight on him in case he makes a mistake that it seems everyone wants to see.
I challenge everyone to republican and democratic to look past the party bias passed down to us from our parents. I hear a lot of people repeating media talking points and ideas from 10, 20, 30 years ago that they heard their parents say.

McCain complained and counted down the moments until Obama went to Iraq, and now that Obama has called his bluff and the entire world is embracing him.(Have you seen the crowds and the love that our brothers and sisters around the world are giving him. Clinton was the last president that generated that type of positive buzz)
He’s upset at all the media attention. What a whiner. But you havent seen anything yet Senator, Just wait until the debates. Obama will eat you alive.

McCain is running an awful campaign, they are completely on the defensive. React, react, react, that’s all they do, they let Obama dictate the tone of the race. Obama speaks in front of 200,000 adoring fans in Germany, why in God’s name would his campaign draw attention to that fact by going to a German-American sausage haus. And the attacks, especially attacks when Obama is overseas, just seem heavy-handed. Attacks didn’t work for Hillary. Didn’t they watch and learn from that campaign? They have no excuse, their primary battle ended months before theirs. It was covered on the news non-stop, you couldn’t avoid watching it if you wanted to. How could they have learned nothing from that? If his campaign staff is going to be his White House staff, you can’t abide this guy, they are all incompetent. Look at the execution of Obama’s entire trip, it has been flawless. McCain’s people make horrendous decision after horrendous decision. That is what the President’s most important job is, to make decisions and McCain and his people have gone a couple of weeks without making a single correct one. How is this guy polling so high, he’s only 6 points down? They are absolutely incompetent.

The GOP are not EVEN in the race at this point… What a TRUE DISPLAY of exactly how ineffectual this party has become. You know what? It just occurred to me that GWB and Cheney and all those hundreds who now support them are in fact LARGELY responsible for the demise of the GOP we have today… I guess this last 7 years have not been an entire catastrophe after all! Thanks… I guess.

McCain is irrelevant. There’s no chance a Republican is going to win in November. That much is plainly clear. And McCain, who the Republicans said wasn’t nearly as good a candidate in 2000 as Bush was (cough, cough), has absolutely no chance in November. I mean, if McCain wasn’t good enough to run against Bush in 2000, then how is he going to be relevant now especially after the dismal failure that Bush has left behind?
Posted by: Eric Hermanson | July 24, 2008, 3:54 pm 3:54 pm
If McCain is so experienced, why is he running such a LAME campaign? Whose idea was it to send McCain to a German Village “Sausage Haus” on the day Obama speaks in Berlin? You’re fired.

And these one-half dozen will vote. Is Obama confused into thinking the Germans at his thing can vote in November? Perhaps Joe Biden, his foreign policy adviser, ought to educate Obama on this very important matter. He may even try to take this to the Supreme Court when he loses. One media called this Obamapalooza. Strange is what it is.

I do not agree with McCain’s ideology and will vote for Obama. However, McCain is a war hero and should be treated with respect. I don’t like the sensationalism of the media (i.e. the headline that 200,000 turn out for Obama but only half a dozen for McCain- give me a break) and I believe both sides should be given fair coverage. I would also like to say that both sides need to stick to the issues and stop the name calling.

This Independent wants to like Obama, but I still don’t see any substance. Yea, yea – anything will be better than Bush. I agree. But the more I see the media hype over Obama and these continuing nasty comments from his supporters, the more turned off I am. At this point,I will probably just let the rest of the voters choose between the two poor choices we have.

Hey Steve, way up at the top…
So you aren’t voting for Obama because the media is covering him more than you’d like? That’s what you use to choose who you vote for? Who you are more sick of seeing?
Shouldn’t that be enough to disqualify you from voting? It’s people like you, who make their decisions based on things like that, that have left us in the situation that we are in. Instead of allowing the medias amount of coverage dictate who you vote for, why don’t you do some research and actually develop an opinion of your own. Then you may react just as millions of people have and decide that it’s time for a real politician, one who knows how the world works and isn’t obsessed with becoming president, but rather is obsessed with leading this country in a better, more fruitful, more WORDLY direction!

I am concerned that he is letting his anger get the best of him, you can see it on his face and in that smirkey smile. For people who are interested as I am I wonder what I ever saw in him 8 years ago. Do people change that much? or is he that desparate??
I think as most CEO’s have to retire at 60 or 65 there should be a cutoff age for President unless it’s his second term.

Obama is a fraud. He reminds me of the boy bands that rich lib producers used to shove down our throats in the 90′s. Obama is the perfect example of a sterling marketing campaign, selling Americans something they really don’t want or need (and will probably endanger them)
Obama wants change. Unless he can rid Washington of EVERY elected official there, we will have no change. Only higher gas prices, higher food prices and higher taxes.
Obama’s speech in Germany also does not impress me. What I heard him say is that he has no respect for his country, will go anywhere and disrespect his country and basically thinks the American people are hicks who don’t live up to European standards. Well, I’m not European and don’t want to be. I speak English and have no desire to speak another (well, maybe some Spanish ’cause it’s getting harder and harder to place my order at McDonalds).
Do you libs really want someone who doesn’t even like you to be your president? That’s sad. At least Mr. McCain loves his country and the people who live here.
p.s. I sure do hope I didn’t spell anything wrong, cause I know how much you libs hate that, as if there aren’t 2 million more important things to worry about.

This is truly sad. McCain should just accept reality and give it up. How can his campaign put the poor man through this? Wow. If, on the other hand, it was McCain (fat chance of that happening) instead of Obama who was garnering all this attention in an overseas trip, his supporters, few as they are, would be lapping it up and yelping for more (yes, yelping – not yelling). Alas, that’s not to be. And if McCain is leading (or close to leading) in the “polls”, who is getting polled? 80 year olds sitting in their rocking chairs waiting for their land lines to ring?

Is it true that McCain is losing in his own home state? hmmm
is it true that today Obama had 199,994 more people turn up to hear him speak than McCain? hmmm
Is it true that the last Republican to visit Germany, Bush, never spoke to the people, had thousands demonstrating against him and his policies, and had to constanty whisked away behind protective barriers because the Germans couldnt stand the thought of him on their soil? hmmmm

CATCH-22
Neocons are a sad, pathetic bunch. On one hand, if Obama travels abroad he is neglecting the need of America while pandering to the rest of the world. On the other hand, we have McCain here in the states having a temper tantrum while Obama focuses the world on what is RIGHT about America.
Seriously folks, get beyond FOX and learn what the rest of the world already knows…Obama is a leader.
Unlike McCain and Bush, Obama can walk and chew gum at the same time. After 7 years of failure from Bush, its time for change now. Jan. 20, 2009 – the end of the Bush “error”.

Wouldn’t Obama do better to speak without reference to his own race if he is running a campaign that purports to look beyond race? His quote:
“I know that I don’t look like the Americans who’ve previously spoken in this great city.”
Overlooking that aspect, what is the motivation to bring up the Americans who have previously spoken in this great city? To group himself with JFK and Reagan?

McCane canceled the scheduled photo-op on a Louisiana off-shore drilling platform because of a huge oil spill from a barge in the area, not because of weather, I guess a little sausage party is less risky any day.
Posted by: AFO | July 24, 2008, 5:28 pm 5:28 pm
I wouldn’t count out McCain just yet. Despite all the media hype surrounding Obama’s world tour, the two candidates are almost in a dead heat in the polls – Obama’s lead is very slight. Also keep in mind that McCain won the nomination by laying low during the primary season while his opponents got most of the attention – he’s a good come-from-behind candidate because he tends to deflect attention away from him to his advantage. Also, Obama outspent Hillary nearly $2 to 1 during the primary season and barely beat her. No, I wouldn’t declare victory for Obama just yet. My hunch is that McCain has a few tricks up his sleeve.
Posted by: Mrs Tea | July 24, 2008, 5:30 pm 5:30 pm
Nice going, major news organization! A major oil spill in an area where a candidate books an event in front of an oil rig. The event gets cancelled and you buy the excuse about weather? You don’t have to render an opinion. Just report the fact of the oil spill and let the reader draw their own conclusions. Get real.

Chris Kofins said last week that McCain’s campaign is “The Harlem Globetrotters of American politics.” I wish I had thought of that analogy – so clever, so true! Yes, the Harlem Globbtrotters may always win – but Kofins was referring to the fact that the Harlem Globetrotters are the clowns of the court – just like McCain and his campaign staff.

Hey guys,
About the polls. This is where the “enthusiasm Gap” comes in. It’s very easy for someone to pick up the phone when they’re called and say they’re for one person or the other. It’s another thing on election day to show up, fight through traffic, take a half day off of work, and pull the lever for some guy you don’t REALLY like.
The polls are a reflection of picking up the phone. The Votes are a reflection of Passion.

Don’t bet on the total people in Berlin because the media has a habit of inflating it to make Obama better. I can guarantee there was no more than about 50 to 60 thousand if that. I seen it on TV. The crowd looks big on TV but that fools you. According to Fox news Obama didn’t get the boost he wanted and he didn’t make the speech at the gate which he wanted. Of course Bush mad a direct phone call to the chancellor and that clinched that. Good for him. .
Posted by: Mariann Pepitone
********************************************* That is amazing Mariann, the German Officials, estimated 215,000 people were there, but you were able to tell from tv that there was merely 50 or 60 thousand. I am impressed with your ability.
And by golly if Fox news said that Obama didn’t get the boost he wanted, then it’s just gotta be the truth. (Even though it is very well documented that the skew the news, distort the truth and outright falsify the facts.).
See what is good about 2007 is that everything can be verified or debunked in a matter of seconds. Fox news can no longer get away with their distortions.

“Hurricane threats” led Senator McCain to cancel his visit to an oil rig where he was scheduled to extol the virtues of off-shore drilling?
I don’t think so.
Even the Senator and his feckless handlers are smart enough to know that a major oil spill in the Mississippi River isn’t the most favorable backdrop for his “keep drilling” pitch. We can only hope that the clean-up has been completed before Election Day.

“I’d love to give a speech in Germany,” McCain said. “But I’d much prefer to do it as President.” +++++ This isn’t right and McCain forgot he’d given a speech in Canada! What McCain actually said (according to USA Today was: “”I would rather speak at a rally or a political gathering any place outside of the country after I am president of the United States,” McCain told (Kelly) O’Donnell. “But that’s a judgment that Sen. Obama and the American people will make.” However, on June 20, McCain himself gave a speech in Canada — to the Economic Club of Canada — in which he applauded NAFTA’s successes. An implicit message behind that speech was that Obama had been critical of the trade accord. Also, McCain’s trip to Canada was paid for by the campaign.” +++++ Interesting how ABC felt free to change the quote around. This is just like CBS pasting a different McCain answer to a Katie Couric question when McCain originally answered that the “Awakening” movement in Iraq was caused by the surge, when actually it preceded it by half a year and many credit it, not the surge, with most of the drop in violence. Can we trust the American media to give us the truth at all anymore? We need a law that makes it a crime to deceive us.

I wish he would speak up (literally) versus this cat and mouse game he’s seem to be to playing. Challenging (or daring) Obama to do things, only to give a response on what Obama has or has not done and not come out and tell the American public what he is all about (ie. including his religious faith, opinion on same sex marriage, abortion, etc. Who is this McCain, I want know him.

All the hateful things you Obama people say about John McCain is going to come back to haunt you. Mcain is a truly great man. Obama should be up by twenty points right now if he expects to win in November but instead is neck and neck in virtually every poll. Start sweating. We won’t forget what you people said about a man who suffered and shed blood for his country while at the same age Obama was happily listening to Reverend Wright say ” God damn America”. So the “bad luck” for McCain is that hurricane shut down the oil drilling platforms and prevented him from giving a speech — on the day that Mississippi is closed to barge traffic b/c of an oil spill — about how opening up more coastal water for oil drilling will solve every problem from energy dependence to bad breath. That would have provided some great photo-op footage.
Instead, this buffoon counters Obama’s address before 200k in Berlin (brought on by the “I’m the expert in foreign policy” schick) by speaking to 6 people in front of a cardboard cut-out a guy in lederhosen at Das Sausage Haus in Ohio.
This is more delicious than seeing Dukakis in a tank.

The trip has served the purpose . Obama has been exposed as an elitist and internationalist rather than average American Joe …Sure , Europeans love him , but they do not vote in the American Election . Remember how Kerry was loved 4 years ago by Europeans and Arabs and even Bin Ladin speaking out on his behalf? That is a clue right there . Obama is now trails in Colorado and his lead in 4 battleground states is all but erased . He said US military is not as good as Soviet Union I heard , Well , How can that connect to average Americans whom he called bittered a few months ago? IF Obama is running for President of the World , yeah , he needs Germans’ votes , if he runs for the president of the US of A , he better watch it , Americans do not like liberal elitist internationalist , not one bit . So , I think it is good for Good ole American hero John Mc CAin …with all that attention and Obama is still not pulling ahead , he’ll lose come Nov. …Remember the DEms. primary battle where Obama lost 5 of the last 6 and if it was not for his early liberal leads , Hillary would have won , well , The G.E. has not even started yet and we has seen Americans doubt Obama , I say John McCain has nothing to worry about , the more Europe loves a candidate , the more America will see that he is not one of them and thus , will not accept him in Nov. ..Go Mc.Cain!

But what’s obvious is that Germans would be willing to vote for Obama for our country but would not likely vote for an African Deutscher in Germany! Racism in Germany is far worse than in the USA by any stretch of the imagination. Credit the US of A, that our system is the progressive leader the world…as usual. Stop resorting to racist and fear remarks that have no place in an intelligent dialogue between which candidate would be better for America. Now don’t get too excited. The German teenagers were there for the free rock concert.
One more thing, if you don’t already know. German teenagers cannot vote in the US Presidential elections.

hey Republicans – please enlighten me on why anyone should vote for McCain – your party has destroyed this country over the last 7+ years, the biggest debt in history, 4000+ soldiers dead for no reason, 100,000+ Iraqi’s dead for no reason, the housing marking collapsing faster than a deck of cards, the economy in shambles, the reputation of America around the world the lowest ever, the working class of America shunned by the current administration while the wealthy’s needs are looked after. Your defending this legacy – why?

NANCY : DONT GET ME WRONG!! U HAVE RIGHT TO LOVE AND VOTE FOR ANY OF THE CANDIDATES AND EVEN PITCH FOR THEM BUT DONT SPREAD FALSEHOOD. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH OBAMA IF HE IS A MUSLIM(HE IS NOT) AND FACTS HAS SHOWN HE THAT BUT U HAVE THE AUDACITY TO COME TO THIS FORUMN AND INSULT MY INTELLIGENCE BY SUGGESTING HE IS. ISNT IT IN THE TEN COMMANDEMENT THAT ‘GOOD CHRISTAINS’ SHOULDNT LIE? WHY CHOOSE THE LOW ROAD WHILE ON UR HIGH HORSE?
BY CORRECTING MY GRAMMAR, I CAN SEE U ARE ARTICULATE BUT WHERE DID U LOSS IT?

Americans are voting for John McCain because they realise that Obama is a fraud. Plain and simple. The man will do or say anything to win some votes. Smart people can see through his facade. What we see is a conman.

The Republican Party hates America, why else would they put an empty-suited stooge like McCain up as their candididate?
The Republican Party hates Christianity. Why else would they be they agents of intolerance and hate throughout the world? Why would they run an adulterer for President?
McCain proves he’s corrupt and worthless by embracing the Republican Party.

Listening to all these McCain supporters ‘whining’ because Obama is getting all the attention from his overseas trip is humorous. Speaking of whining, where in the world is Phil Gramm? You know, McCains economic advisor.

During the primary campaign, Hillary Clinton complained that Obama’s candidacy was built on “just words” and ignored the reality of politics. That theme is picked up again today by New York Times columnist David Brooks, who writes of Obama’s style: “He has grown accustomed to putting on this sort of saccharine show for the rock concert masses, and in Berlin his act jumped the shark. … Obama has benefited from a week of good images. But substantively, optimism without reality isn’t eloquence. It’s just Disney.”

Grow up!! There is no room for racial sentiments in this election. If the blacks shout u down at meetings, shout back and dont crawl into ur shell and come to this forumn to complain and spread hate!! Janephilips mother: Nice of u to straighten ur lil gal up. I am a white man, 48 years old, me and all of my family and friend are voting for Obama, even my republican parents. We are voting for a man who has America’s best interest at heart, we are voting for a man who wants to make this country great again. McCain has his special interest groups at heart, NOT the American people.

Seperation of Church & State: I`ll be glad, when No Candidate Attends a Church, or Endorsed by Any Church, Mosque, Temple Or Synagouge.
Note: Most of your Presidents were Not Christian, they were Deist-Masonic.
I`ll be Glad when All Candidates say, in Debates …
“I’m Implementing the Seperation of Church & State Rule” …
1. My Religion is the Constitution.
2. My Religion, is to the (Republic) For which It Stands.
3. My Religions are the Senate, Congress, The State, This Nation and Its People.
You Hypocrites can Have Your Religions…
I have Enough on My Plate, as You can See.
4. “My Religion is this Great Nation, Its Diversed People and the Health of this Nation’s Economy and Continued Health, Wealth and Prosperity…
5. “Thank You and May the Spirits Guide & Guard this Great Nation and it’s People”
Seperation of Chuch & State…
For ALL Candidates.
They should not Attend Church…Anywhere.
Because the Pastor-Preacher can say Anything Controversial, at Any Time and this can Only Hurt the Politician, who may or may not have been in the Church, when the Pastor- Preacher says what he says.
All Politicians should use this Election as a sign…
Seperate, Church & State…Permamently.
PS: Politicians & Most People don`t Attend Church Religously, Devoutly..Anyway, Just Like Some of YOU…HYPOCRITES.
I`d Love to See Your Church and its Members.

Maybe we could just tell McCain he won. He seems confused enough to believe it. Then we can elect someone who’s aware (after bragging about their foreign affairs experience) of what countries still exist.
Republicans loved Reagan who wanted to bomb the USSR. Now they want to elect McCain who probably thinks USSR is still around.

McCain has become a walking talking joke – first the dairy aisle, then brats at the german restaurant, the golfcart ride with pappy bush. He sure didn’t make good use of the time while Obama was overseas. McCain has run a horrible campaign – and that’s indicative of how he’d run his administration. McCain doesn’t have the intelligence or the temperment to be president. He’s just a joke.

Hey As it Is- Your math is way off. You say Obama 200,000, McCain 6? Wrong. McCain 6 American voters, Obama 0. Plus 6 to McCain.

hey KIRK -
desperate try – dispute these facts: This settles it: Barack Obama quietly raised more money in Arizona last month for his presidential campaign than John McCain did, and the Illinois Democrat dominates the overall fundraising map in 43 states and Washington, D.C. Obama also appears to be leading in Republican-friendly states such as Idaho and Utah, records show. – from AZCentral.com Bwaaaa Haaaa Haaaa Haaaa! eat that!

BEAUTIFUL… Obama left a prayer at the Western Wall in Jerusalem; it is considered taboo to read prayers left at the wall by others. Well someone went and retrieved this prayer and had it published, which infuriated the Rabbi supervisor of the Western Wall. As pointed out in Newsweek, Obama didn’t pray for election victory, or loss for McCain, nor money for his campaign, but rather he prayed for Divine Guidance on his path.
He wrote: “Lord, protect my family and me. Forgive me my sins and help me guard against pride and despair. Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just. And make me an instrument of your will.”
THAT is our next president! Thank you

While it is true that Senator McCain challenged Senator Obama to go to Iraq on a fact finding mission he did not suggest that he traipse all over Europe pretending to be president. If Senator Obama is really presidential material why does he not see that his actions and his words on foreign soil are totally inappropriate for a candidate? Wise up–he wants to sell us out so the world can all become one big happy family and he can run the whole show.
Posted by: Elaine | July 25, 2008, 8:35 pm 8:35 pm
oh Elaine, the words of simpletons are so amusing. Yes, Senator McCain challenged Sen Obama to go travel. McCain did not suggest Obama ‘traipse’ all over Europe, and 3 countries are hardly ‘traipsing’ all over Europe. And yes McCain did not suggest it, does that mean Obama shouldn’t do it? Obama, thank god, doesn’t have the job of following McCain’s suggestion; he will do what HE sees fit for himself.

The only testament we need to the ignorance of the populace of this country is that the electorate put Disaster Bush in office a second time. Of course, the fact that the Democrats could field no one better than Scary Kerry didn’t help.
Although Germans can’t vote here, America’s image on the world stage is actually important. I think it’s good that a candidate who can actually put a sentence together (as opposed to that utter moron, “W”) is the face of America overseas. I don’t agree with everything Obama says either, but at least I don’t cringe with embarrassment at the way he says it.
Either McCain or Obama will be a huge improvement over the current clown. Bush is a stupid, vapid, ignorant man. It’s really sad that people no longer connect sounding stupid with being stupid. Maybe we have “reality” TV to thank for that?

Kirk -
I see your point. However, it’s a false one.
America has thousands of troops stationed in Germany, and thousands of US civilians also live and work there. All of these can vote by absentee ballot. Do you really think all of those 200,000 people were German?
Wake up. McCain is toast in this election unless a miracle (or another Diebold-assisted Republican theft) takes place. I haven’t seen a candidate look this out of touch and ineffective since Michael Dukakis or Walter Mondale.
