McCain Camp Continues Unsubstantiated Inconsistent Attacks on Obama Over Germany Trip

"Why do you think he didn’t go?" Larry King asked Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Monday night, referring to Sen. Barack Obama’s scrubbed trip to visited wounded veterans at Landstuhl Hospital in Germany.

"I have no idea except that I know that according to reports that he wanted to bring media people and cameras and his campaign staffers," McCain said.

The part about wanting to bring the media is decidedly not true. There were never any plans for Obama to "bring media people and cameras." Never.

The issue was, according to sources in both the Pentagon and the Obama campaign, whether Obama could bring Air Force Maj. Gen. Scott Gration (Ret.), an adviser to his campaign.

After the Pentagon told Gration he couldn’t come, since he was officially seen as a campaign staffer and not as a former military man, that’s when Obama scrubbed the trip.

Why is that?

Obama said Saturday that "we got notice that he (Gration) would be treated as a campaign person, and it would therefore be perceived as political because he had endorsed my candidacy but he wasn’t on the Senate staff. That triggered then a concern that maybe our visit was going to be perceived as political. And the last thing that I want to do is have injured soldiers and the staff at these wonderful institutions having to sort through whether this is political or not or get caught in the crossfire between campaigns."

McCain has taken out a TV ad attacking Obama on the issue, again claiming Obama scrubbed the trip because he couldn’t bring cameras — a charge McCain’s friend Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., called "inappropriate."

On Tuesday, the McCain campaign continued its attack on Obama for not visiting Landstuhl, issuing a statement with Army Maj. Craig Layton (Ret.), the former Command Sergeant Major at Landstuhl, saying, "Why Senator Obama felt he needed an adviser with him to visit U.S. troops is unclear, but if Senator Obama isn’t comfortable meeting wounded American troops without his entourage, perhaps he does not have the experience necessary to serve as commander in chief."

"Entourage"?

Gen. Gration hardly constitutes a one-man version of Turtle, Johnny Drama, Ari and E.

This seems quite a stretch.

The Obama campaign may have itself to blame for this problem. After initially not explaining the trip’s cancellation, the campaign’s first explanation of why the trip was canceled lacked important context, such as any information about the Pentagon and Gen. Gration. (Why wasn’t the Obama campaign more than forthcoming? Because clearly some top advisers believed it was OK to spin half-truths to the media simply because they are physiologically able to do so, the candidate’s rhetoric about transparency and serving "the people" notwithstanding.)

It may not have been until Obama addressed the matter at 10 Downing Street that we got an answer seemingly close to the truth on this all.

But that doesn’t change the fact that the McCain campaign and McCain himself are not being honest in their attacks on this issue, which are inconsistent and assume facts not in evidence

Grim all around.

Obama is the one not being honest. It is not an “attack”. I think you know this and are just trying to be provocative.

Mcain please give it a rest old man what about when Mcain went to canada, mexico and colombia did the obama campaign whine about it for days and days? seems to me mccain is trying to take something positive and make it negetive!! Hes just jealous and desperate instead of harping on obamas trip WHY DOESNT HE START FOCUSING ON WHAT HE IS GONNA DO AS POTUS MCCAIN YOUR GETTING PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: angie | July 30, 2008, 11:14 am 11:14 am

Yeah. Campaign staff stand-offish attitude towards journalists is as “grim” as a Presidential candidate lying to question his opponent’s patriotism and respect for the troops.
Just the same. Just the same.

The problem is at this point, there doesn’t seem to be a way to establish the facts beyond the various stories.
This much is true: Obama could have visited the wounded troops anyway without the advisor and there would be no story. Bad call on his part.
The post Labor Day campaigns will get uglier. The problem of using a network strategy as Obama has is it is an avalanche model. An avalanche has power, momentum and direction but no intelligence. It is just raw force and can be disrupted easily. All the snow ends up at the bottom of the mountain but precisely where the heaps are is very unpredictable unless charges are set correctly. It appears that his staff knows how to start the avalanche but not how to control it. It appears the McCain camp is beginning to realize that it can.

if Obama had no intention of bringing the media, then why did USA Today report “The Pentagon arranged for Obama to visit Landstuhl and for his campaign staff and traveling press corps to be accommodated at a nearby airport, Morrell said.” (would those not be reports he was bringing them along)? USA Today also reported “During the flight from Germany to France this morning, Gibbs said the Pentagon initially approved a stop by the Obama campaign plane at Ramstein, then raised questions about the political nature of the visit less than 48 hours before it was to take place.
Gibbs said Obama wanted to see the troops, but decided to scrap the visit rather than risk mixing politics into the visit.
At Ramstein, he would have been aboard his a charter plane painted with his campaign logo, slogan and Internet address
Gibbs said U.S. military officials gave permission for the flight to land last week. “It was either July 15 or 16″ when the OK came through, he said. But on Wednesday, Gration received a warning from the Pentagon that the visit would be perceived as political.
That word came from the legislative affairs office of the secretary of Defense, according to Gibbs.
Obama himself made the decision to scrap the visit, Gibbs said.”. The Obama camp saying that the Pentagon would classify ANY stop he made as political does not match up to their latest excuses. How is ANY stop political when it is only 1 person making it political?
So if it really was just about one person, why not ditch him and have obama go alone? The latest excuse just doesn’t hold water. But its the normal MO of the Obama camp. Start off with a position, find themselves in error, change position, then lash out at anyone who dares questions them.

mccain is trying to spin a negative light on anything he can because he is looking pretty bad right now.
he talks about his strong points being foreign affairs and obama went over sea’s and wiped the floor with mccain.
the only thing people remember about mccain and over sea’s is his crashingly disturbing jokes!!
if you cant do anything right then take the other guy down with you, mccains plan to win?

Like most things Obama…we have had multiple stories about the reason he cancelled a visit with our troops to workout at the Ritz. The Pentagon told them not to go…not true. Multiple advisors saying it would “appear political” so they couldn’t go. It is clear that if Obama had wanted to go…he could have with a couple of senate staffers and his security. Photos would have been taken by a military photographer. His campaign plane and staff would have been accomodated in a hanger. Obama made the choice not to go…to workout. People can make up their own minds what this means. I will say that his one visit to Walter Reed was prceeded by an announcement by his campaign that he would be making a “private visit” and that this ‘private visit’ was used in a subsequent speech. Our troops deserve better than this from a potential commander-in-chief.

You get several versions of events also when you catch your teenager in a difficult situation. The story keeps changing until they get the version that seems to work the best. Obama and his handlers are merely demonstrated their immaturity.

Let’s just name it for what it is.
McCain is a LIAR. Not just about this story, but about his flip-flops on immigration, his denial that he ever said he wasn’t an economic expert, etc.
Jake, someone should do a story about McCains pattern of lies and deceit, just like the media is enjoying doing stories about Obama’s pattern of supposed arrogance and presumptuousness.

Posted by: Brian | July 30, 2008, 11:32 am 11:32 am

Seems right out of the Rove playbook, cue-cards and all. It’s a shame that McCain’s past is being sacrificed for his fixation on being the oldest president. He seems to have forgotten what the Cheney/Rove machine did to him in 2000 but politics makes strange bed-fellows. As much as we might like him as a grandfather, he is better off retired to his mansion than being in Wash. After 70, the mind does strange things on us; one guy looked at himself in the mirror and thought he saw Tom Cruise.

Posted by: all | July 30, 2008, 11:32 am 11:32 am

Oh yeah I forgot about this winner from Andrea Mitchell “But they thought that they couldn’t win. Yeah. They thought that they were, you know, you know, no-win situation, that the Pentagon, perhaps the military with cooperation from some Republican operatives and, that’s the sort of scuttlebutt, that there have been some foreign policy advisers of John McCain with connections in the Pentagon who had something to do with this.”. Well since Mitchell was travelling with obama at the time, where did the scuttlebutt come from I wonder? The Obama campaign maybe? So not only were they lying they were also trying to smear McCain.

Posted by: Zaggs | July 30, 2008, 11:33 am 11:33 am

The McCain camp is lying on this one and one can only assume they know they are lying. Too bad for McCain it won’t matter. This election is over. Step back from your TRS-80, Senator McCain, it’s over.

Admit it. If Obama had visited those particular troops (he has visited others), then you would be criticizing him for THAT too. This is just another non-issue you all jump on when you think you smell blood. Are we sharks or Americans?

Posted by: jock59801 | July 30, 2008, 11:35 am 11:35 am

When McCain went to visit wounded soliders he did so without the press being there to build up his image. He went there to console them.
Obama cancelled his visit to wounded veterans because the press was not allowed with him.
Yes, I see a differnce

Posted by: ivan123 | July 30, 2008, 11:45 am 11:45 am

McCain is a willy old man who will say anything to get attention. So much for respectable campaign.
Obama should up the ante be highlighting McCain’s incoherent flip flops on almost all issues from offshore oil drilling to Iraq troop withdrawal.

Posted by: McSly | July 30, 2008, 11:47 am 11:47 am

Anyway, McCain is dishonest on this one. It’s amusing to me how people try to nit-pick at Obama. He’s like the young Kobe Bryant in this regard – folk didn’t like him because he wanted to be the best and they interpreted his confidence as arrogance. Folk don’t like Obama because he’s young and “audacious” enough to believe that he can make a difference. They confuse his ambition and passion for arrogance.

McCain is making our wounded heros a campaign issue which is innapropriate… exactly the reason Obama didn’t want to visit there on that instance. He visited other Vet Hosptials on the trip, just not the one in Germany b/c he didnt want it to be percieved as a political event.
Obama has ALWAYS respected our veterans (i.e. his work with Walter Reid Vet Hospital etc.)…
I guess McCain feels its okay to use vets as a political chess piece. And what is McCain saying the point of these atacks are? Obama deosnt value our servicemen? look at his voting record and then look at McCains on things like the new GI bill and Medical assistance for vets etc… Obama looks like a patriot more and more! (b/c he is!)

mcshame is an embarrassment. He is not a ‘straight-talker’ and nothing like he was in 2000. The press should call him out and Larry King should have done that during the interview – but instead he allowed McCain to go on misrepresenting. We need responsible press and some truth from McCain.

Posted by: bernadette | July 30, 2008, 11:57 am 11:57 am

ivan123,
Thanks for demonstrating the typical “low info voter”. Did you not read the article? McCain’s claim that Obama wanted press to cover the visit is FALSE. FALSE.
Obama visited wounded troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Walter Reed, etc. many times with NO PRESS and NO FANFARE.
Stop repeating McCain’s lies.

Posted by: Lisa | July 30, 2008, 11:57 am 11:57 am

McAttack should be his name. All the McCain campaign does is attack Obama because they can’t seem to get their own message on target. It’s the classic “look at what’s happening over here” so you don’t pay too close attention to me. It’s a real turn off. Where is HIS message?

hey george.. if your a lifelong military person and dont feel Obama is looking out for your interests that is a shame because he cares about you and shows it in his actions… like passing bills to get you more support, medicine, and benefits! (McCain does not)
and you dont care what the reason is? sounds like you already made up your mind months ago and now you feel you have a reason to give to people for voting for McCain.. and what a silly unfortunate reason too…

For a guy who supposedly supports the troops, why does McCain keep voting AGAINST G.I. bills? Tell ya what, McSame, instead of touring VA hospitals like some aging starlet, how about spending that time in Congress voting FOR a G.I. bill for a change? Like Obama did. I’m sure the troops would prefer that to a photo-op handshake from you.
That is, if you REALLY “support our troops.” Or is that just – gasp – pretty rhetoric?

The simple fact is he didn’t go when the Army was expecting him.

I think I know why the McCain campaign is tripping over themselves to try and capitalize on every perceived gaffe. I think they realize that McCain hasn’t exceeded 45% in any poll i’ve seen since the primary ended. McCain’s campaign has realized that he has ceiling of 45% and Obama has a ceiling of 51% ( the highest Ive seen him at since the end of the primary) thats why theyre freaking out. Thats why they can’t go three days sraight with one over riding theme. Thats why they are wasting money on stupid attack adds that make them look dumb. Thats why they are launching and scrapping attack websites in the same week. The wheels are coming off and its only July. This is amazing!!! We are witnessing the collapse of a candidate before our very eyes. Its gotta be sickning to Republicans that their candidate isn’t really ready for primetime. They should announce a new VP pick every week from now to election day. They really have no other option. What can he do give another speech….God Forbid!!!

Obama should be beating McCain by 15 to 20 points in polls. But unfortunately for Obama people are looking at his record as a Illinois State Senator. The only thing he did there was make his friends, like Tony Rezko, richer and did absolutely nothing for his people.

Posted by: Time | July 30, 2008, 12:34 pm 12:34 pm

Obama achieved just what he sat out to achieved. He spoke to all the leaders and got a good feel on how they would like to see things change. Then, he not only visited with and spoke to several of our troops but also to the leaders of those troops and listened and answered questions from them. You people are fools if you think for one minute McCain is better in judgement, and leadership then Obama.

Something is wrong when you need 300 advisers telling you what to do–pulling the strings.
This is why he has that “empty suit” reputation.

Posted by: ExTex | July 30, 2008, 1:38 pm 1:38 pm

The “entourage” description is fair enough. Obama has been less than forthcoming about his reasons for canceling.
The idea that Gration not being allowed to go and therefore the trip would be seen (by someone) as political is preposterous. There is nothing about Gration not going that could change the perception of the trip in the public’s eyes. In fact, Obama going in alone would be the least political, most noble thing of all.
I understand that Obama was not planning on bringing the media entourage, but Gibbs told reporters they had not ruled out a pool report. So they hadn’t closed the door to some sort of media coverage, and it’s hard to know what they had asked for or planned in that regard.

If Obama truly wants to visit the wounded troops, he can do so without the appearance of inject politics into it. Simply goes there with only Senate staff or alone. He can do it with another plane if his chartered plane is full of his campaign logo. He can do it at night, or secretly. The fact that he didn’t go and gave this half truth about Gration, just shows that his mindset was stuck with his concern about his campaign, and lack of concern for the real subject of this story – the wounded troops. It is not the context of his excuses, but his mindset and thinking at the time that is most revealing. For a journalist like JPT to be so superficial in his reporting, he must be duped by the messiah Obama. McCain has every right to point out Obama’s “true” motive for not going. There may be some extrapolation by McCain from what Obama actually said, but the extrapolation, IMO, is close to the truth that falsehood.

Posted by: jj | July 30, 2008, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm

This just points out what we know to be true – Obama thinks he can manipulate and control the media. It never occurred to him that his initial story would be questioned. What a dangerous ego!

Senator Obama playing basketball with the troops was not POLITICAL but visiting wounded troop would have been. That is a fake excuse. No press, no camera, no PR, no visit was what Obama wanted.

As Chairman Of The Subcommittee With NATO Oversight, Obama Has Failed To Hold Any Hearings On Afghanistan:
Hillary brought this up at one of the many debates and Obama’s answer was “he was to busy running for president.”
Obama is a politian, so if you shake his hand make sure you count your fingers afterwards.

Sorry, Jake. No matter how many explanations, how much reasoning, the fact remains: Obama ought to have made the trip IN PRIVATE. Leave cameras behind, leave reporters behind, leave Gration behind. Make the trip…issue a statement AFTER the fact, no need to make one before.
There is so much opacity to Obama the private citizen, Obama the Senator, Obama the candidate. Wasn’t this all planned? Only at the last min. did the campaign wizards deem the visit inappropriate? Come on….

There’s another “fact” that deserves some “vetting” from that McSlime ad. How on earth does he get away with claiming he’s “always been there for our troops” when he:
1) Opposed Senator Webb’s GI Bill and then didn’t even bother to show up for the vote, and,
2) received a “D” rating as opposed to the “B+” given to Senator Obama in 2006 from the The Iraq and Afghan Veterans of America for “supporting our troops.”
This guy’s lies, distortions, and flip flops are piling up so deep that we’re going to need snow plows to get through them by November.

I wouldn’t say that a short-term communications problem within the Obama campaign that was corrected relatively rapidly is “grim.” McCain’s dishonesty and dissembling over the past week and a half has truly been on another level.
Otherwise, good article.

If this is an indication of Mr. Teflon’s preparation, I must say that this country would be among the last to know of whatever he drags us into…….hope he hops off the World Citizen crap soon ( said it again in Washington….just so the media folks know). Does he know the gravity of the problems we have in THIS country….we can no longer shore up the world while we go broke…….forget being World Citizen, Obie…if you get in, you got enuff to do here…..what were we supposed to get out of your trip….that u r FDR? I don’t think so…again, to the media: stories suggesting that the big German crowd was there…at least, partially…for reasons other than the appearance of the rock star…..like beer tents all over…and, indeed, an outdoor concert…and the World Order speech by the Dude? Somebody dig into that, ABC.NBC. Fox, CNN….Der Spiegel…..will some 4th estater do something besides spilling just what is on his/her mind? It’s like looking/reading the news in 60 seconds or less.

I guess if it is ‘bad’ the GOP LIKES IT. And so it is easy to see why the country is in bad shape. NOTHING GOOD COMES OUT OF THE GOP!
THOSE AGAINST OBAMA ARE WITH BUSH AND MCSAME…CHANGE IS INEVITABLE ..EMBRACE IT, AND LOVE IT. YOU WILL AGE..THAT IS CHANGE, FOR THOSE HAVING DIFFICULTY COMING TO THAT REALIZATION. WE THE PEOPLE ARE SUPPORTING OBAMA…WE THE PEOPLE..AND THE REST OF THE WORLD SEES WHAT WE THE PEOPLE SEE. GET OUT OF YOUR EVIL WAYS, GOP!

Well, well, another “low info” voter.
Mary, the “playing basketball with the troops” was during the CODEL (Congressional Delegation) part of the trip (to Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan…)
The trip to Germany was during the campaign-funded part of the trip. THAT’s the difference. Do try to keep up.

Dear JOHN……ASK THE AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN THAT HOSPITAL HOW WELL OBAMA CORRECTED “THE CAMPAIGN” PROBLEM HE CAUSED WITHOUT MUCH BRAINPOWER ON HIS PART IN THE MESS……THINK ABOUT IT, DUDE…..AND YOU WANT ME TO VOTE TO HAVE HIS HAND ON THE RED TELEPHONE? I DON’T THINK SO, JOHN……..THINK ABOUT IT.

Hey Time, McCain is on the Armed Services Committee and has missed every single meeting on Afghanistan over the last two years. I can only assume that’s because he’s been busy running for president.

This is WAY more important than actual issues. Not.
Somebody should tell Republicans that they are going to lose for one simple reason: They do not appear capable of being reasonable. This is a shame because most Republicans aren’t like Mccain or his campaign at all, Fox News notwithstanding.

It is obvious that if you are pro-Obama you think McCain is lying, if you are pro-McCain, you think Obama is lying. Half of these posts are knee-jerk thoughtless reactions. The fact of the matter is that Obama could have gone to see the troops and then made several lame excuses to cover up why he didn’t, including blaming the Pentagon. This is how I, as an independent who has voted both Dem & Rep in the past 6 elections, sees it. I do not think McCain is lying or being dishonest about it – he has always supported the troops. I would say the same think he is – the whole thing smells fishy and he’s calling Obama on it. That’s good politics. The only reason Obama doesn’t have to stoop to that level is that the media does his dirty work for him. If Obama did not also have the flag pin incident and the Michelle Obama proud for the first time incident people might believe him. Also, there are other things about this trip that are suspicious. The speech in Germany where 200,000 young people showed up – that was advertised as a free concert – Obama spoke before the bands came out. Of course no one mentioned that on the major networks. As always my presidential vote will be for the lesser of two evils, this election year that is McCain.

To tell the truth is an honorable thing to do and Senator McCain has been telling the truth about Obama’s trip and his flimsy excuses in not visiting wounded troops. Senator has given 3 or 4 reason, all flimsy excuses.
And when will Obama say we need to drill for oil off our coast and ANWAR?

SO WHY WAS OBAMA PLAYING BASKETBALL INSTEAD OF WORKING?

Posted by: geevill | July 30, 2008, 3:03 pm 3:03 pm

Although I’m an Obama supporter, I didn’t think as badly of John McCain until this. It shows that McCain is going for the old style politics and playing on the lack of knowledge of the “low-info voters”. People should check on Factcheck for the truth.

Posted by: JGM | July 30, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

Why are the troops in the hospital in the first place. They are in there as a result of being patriotic and fighting for their country. Now, the GOP used such conviction and sense of duty. BUT, it was a lie to got to war in Iraq. GOP EVIL AGAIN.

Obama at UNITY 08 yesterday:
“I personally would want to see our tragic history, or the tragic elements of our history, acknowledged,” the Democratic presidential hopeful said.
“I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it’s Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds.”

Posted by: Time | July 30, 2008, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

Look at how pathetic some of you are — you’re basing your votes on the fact that Obama visited some wounded troops and chose not to visit others when he thought it would be seen as political. And if your main concern this time around is who wears a flag pin where, you deserve exactly what a McCain presidency will do this country.

Posted by: Jason Mathers | July 30, 2008, 3:13 pm 3:13 pm

McCain doesn’t present any evidence that Obama cancelled the trip because the press couldn’t be there and furthermore, he has been debunked by Factcheck. It is obvious that he was trying to generate some controversy about Obama, but to stoop to such lies when all this is so easily verifiable is disgusting. The funny thing about this is that McCain has been in a similar position in which he did not visit wounded troops and the media has not called him about it. check it out from CNN:

Posted by: Nikolai | July 30, 2008, 3:33 pm 3:33 pm

Strange how in all this we totally ignored the fact that McCain cancelled a visit to the troops stateside in April for exactly the same reason… he was told by the Pentagon it would be a political visit.
Guess sauce for the goose isn’t sauce for the gander… I wonder why

It is sad, unfortunate, and tragic that during our severve economic and global challenges, the GOP, RNC, FOX & friends, Hon.senator McCains surrogtes, and now he himself has got into this pitty stuff. I believe its more of his temper and senior moment based than his past personality.
We can afford to him to be our next president.

Whenever I hear McCain all I hear is “drilling” or “Obama” Does the man have any ideas on how he would run the White House? McCain is an old man wanting to be president. He would be a diaster for this country!

Posted by: sue gold | July 30, 2008, 3:57 pm 3:57 pm

There goes the bitter republican again. I guess he’s still suffering from what the people of Vietnam did 2 him. I guess he’ll start another war in 2009.

Posted by: geevill | July 30, 2008, 5:20 pm 5:20 pm

Obama is a fraud. He could have left General What’s-His-Name behind and visited the troops. It’s as simple as that. Fraud. Liar. Lightweight. Nobama ’08.

Posted by: Wireman | July 30, 2008, 5:27 pm 5:27 pm

I have always liked McCain. He was independant and honest. Unfortunately he has decided to take to low road with this and other issues. I am shocked and disappointed. He just lost a swing voter.

A little R&R with the troops. Keep morals up and the like.
Do try to pay attention or leave the talk to the grown ups.

McCain wants to become a president by all means and so the only way is to become negative on Obama. The problem is how many months will McCain last as a president. Americans have dignity and respect. We wont want our president to collapse in the middle of his speech with world leaders.

Over at the Atlantic, Marc Ambinder has an interesting reaction from former McCain strategist John Weaver to the Arizona Republican’s new ad attacking Barack Obama’s celebrity status (complete with references to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears). Calling it “childish,” Weaver also claims that harping on Obama “reduces McCain on the stage”.

McCain is counting on ignorant voters.
Andrea Mitchell, a conservative reporter, was with Obama’s trip and is on the news pointing out the McCain camp is ‘making things up’. That in fact McCain cancelled a visit with wounded troops for the EXACT SAME REASON. We don’t use our kids as political props.

Let’s just have a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing to get all the facts. Please Senator Levin, I want you to call under oath General Gration and Senator Obama, and throw in a few wounded amputees as well. Lets say an October date?
