McCain Warns of Sun Dangers After Dermatological Checkup

ABC News’ Bret Hovell Reports: John McCain used the occasion Monday of his quarterly dermatological checkup to remind Americans about the dangers of skin cancer.

“I want to urge all Americans to wear sunscreen, particularly this summer, to stay out of the sun as much as possible…” McCain said, “and if you have any slight discoloration, please go to your dermatologist or your doctor and get it checked up on.”

McCain was speaking to reporters in Bakersfield, Calif, a few hours after having a small spot removed from his right temple out of what appears to be an abundance of caution being exercised by his doctors.

McCain said the procedure was routine, and that his doctor “took a small little nick from my cheek as she does regularly.” McCain said the spot would be biopsied “just to make sure everything is fine.”

He was asked if his doctor was confident that the spot was nothing, and he replied, “sure, sure, absolutely.”

McCain is a four time survivor of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and he regularly stresses the importance of protection from the sun.

“Melanoma is a preventable occurrence,” the Arizona Republican said. “It really is, it’s one of the most preventable occurrences, but remember a lot of the damage that people receive from the sun when they’re young sometimes comes back later in life."

In 2000, McCain had a spot on his left temple removed along with more than thirty lymph nodes on the left side of his face and neck. The procedure was successful, but left the Senator with a large scar running the length of his face.  McCain has been cancer free since 2002.

The presumptive Republican nominee sees his dermatologist every three months for screenings, and today’s visit in Phoenix was one of them.  A campaign aide said that the doctor was not concerned by the lesion that had to be removed, adding it was, “nothing that looked in any way cancerous.”

Thats very sad news, lets hope the senator make a full recovery and everything turns out fine for him. I’ll keep him and his family in my prayers.

I knew something would have to come out on McCain’s health today since they ran the story on Obama’s hip being sore and he had to see a doctor.

Posted by: Greg | July 28, 2008, 2:29 pm 2:29 pm

McCain will be 72 on Aug. 29. That’s the average age of most retirement communities in the US. You have to ask yourself is this guy up to the task especially considering all the goofy gaffes and confused comments he has been making lately.

I am not a fan of this man but I pray it is good news for him and his family.

He needs to drop out of the race, And take time of to take care of his health. His health should be his number 1 priority not presidency.

Yeah I hope he is keeping on top of it…me dad who is a little younger than Mccain…is fighting the same cancer ratio (he has also been diagnosed twice before and had to have treatments/removals)
I would still like to hear what other physicians say about this…
Only because as my dad says…
“if you have it once they warn you…
if you have it twice… they watch you…closely and often”
that will be the case for John McCain for the rest of his life.

John needs to get out of Arizona.

This maks it all the more important who McBush picks to be his VP running mate. That person may very well end up in the WH.

You guys should leave McCain alone.

Posted by: None | July 28, 2008, 2:38 pm 2:38 pm

This makes the McCain VP choice critical and McCain doesn’t have a lot of good choices. They all have major liabilities, I predict he will wait for the convention and pick Jeb Bush.

Here is hoping the cancer is removed successfully. Skin cancer is caused by heavy exposure to the sun and skin burning. People should definitely wear sun screens to help prevent skin cancer. My grandfather fought skin cancer for 40 years before dying in his 90s.

Posted by: Mary | July 28, 2008, 2:40 pm 2:40 pm

McCain is not my choice, However I wish him well! All politics aside.

Posted by: Elitist | July 28, 2008, 2:44 pm 2:44 pm

Despite the doctor’s non-concern and the “don’t know” statement by the campaign aide, the lesion will certainly be biopsied for a cancer presence. It would be medical malpractice to not do the biopsy for a person with McCain’s cancer history.
Not a supporter, but I wish him well.

Posted by: BronxInTN | July 28, 2008, 2:48 pm 2:48 pm

look, forget who your candidate is…this type of stuff should make us all pause. Melemona has nothing to do with advanced age, my sister had stage 4 melenoma when she was 30. (not from sun exposure but hormone triggered). thank God she is still okay 20 years later.
This can strike anyone so wear sunscreen, NO tanning beds and get a regular skin screening folks.
Sounds like a PSA doesn’t it?

I’m not a supporter of Senator McCain’s, but I will pray for him and his family. Let not our political battles blind us to our common bonds, people. (I’ll be praying for Robert Novak, too.)

good luck McCain. But can we really trust the doctors, i am having feeling they were hiding the diagnosis until after November. the fact remain that McCain health matter more than the presidency.

Mack
The mistakes that Obama has made were not repeatedly made like McCain’s. Also, unlike Bush, Obama attended Harvard Princeton without the benefit of a wealthy father so he truly earned his degrees. Fact it, McCain joined the miletary because he would never have made it to an Ivy league school!

Snub our troops? Did you see all the troops around when he was nailing those three’s? The Pentagon didn’t want him to go to the base so he didn’t. Man Mcsame is an incompitant moron he doesn’t even know whats going on he’s just making stuff up now . And last I saw it was mcsame who wanted Obama to go on this trip. Now he’s just using it as an attack even though it was huge. Worse of all Mcsame is just making stuff up now.

My god this is a mole. How many were removed today in the world. Lets not give him cancer until the results come out. Look at Warren Buffett now about to retire is 77. The average age of the justices on the Supreme Court is 68. This list goes on and on but I will not waste my time with people who obvious want to prejudice based on age.

Posted by: William | July 28, 2008, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm

McCain is younger than Reagan was when he ran for his second term. I don’t know why we don’t hear more about this fact in response to the democrats who put McCain down because of his age. I find it ironical when members of the party of inclusion try and use age against McCain.

chattyway – I read your “conclusion” carefully and it’s completely insane. You extrapolate a whole lot of nonsense from something that was obviously a simple mistake. The guy misspoke – that’s not any kind of “evidence” that he has no knowledge of history, as you crazily claim. You’re a ridiculous kook grasping at straws. Grow up – you only make McCain and his supporters look desperate and ridiculous.

Posted by: Big Stick | July 28, 2008, 4:44 pm 4:44 pm

I am midway in age between McCain and Obama and – political differences aside — Obama strikes me as a half-baked twerp who is ten years away from having the experience and wisdom required to be president of the United States. What about Kennedy? Case in point: The Bay of Pigs. Kennedy wasn’t ready, either, and he had much more experience in government than Obama. The presidency is not an Olympic sport, it requires mostly wisdom.

SOME HISTORY FOR YOU ABOUT THE OBAMA KOO-AID ALIKE!
James Warren “Jim” Jones (May 13, 1931 – November 18, 1978) was the American founder of the Peoples Temple, which became synonymous with mass suicide after the November 18, 1978 death of over 900 people from cyanide poisoning in their isolated agricultural intentional community called Jonestown, along with the death of 9 other people at a nearby airstrip and in Georgetown. To the extent the actions in Jonestown were viewed as a mass suicide, it is one of the largest such mass suicides in history, perhaps the largest in over 1,900 years and the largest mass suicide of United States citizens. One of those dying at the nearby airstrip was Leo Ryan, who became the first and only Congressman murdered in the line of duty in the history of the United States.

PUT THE CUP DOWN NOW!! OBAMA KOOL-AID IS SOME BAD STUFF..
A reference to the 1978 cult mass-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Jim Jones, the leader of the group, convinced his followers to move to Jonestown. Late in the year he then ordered his flock to commit suicide by drinking grape-flavored Kool-Aid laced with potassium cyanide. In what is now commonly called “the Jonestown Massacre”, 913 of the 1100 Jonestown residents drank the Kool-Aid and died.
One lasting legacy of the Jonestown tragedy is the saying, “Don’t drink the Kool-Aid.” This has come to mean, “Don’t trust any group you find to be a little on the kooky side.” or “Whatever they tell you, don’t believe it too strongly”.
The phrase can also be used in the opposite sense to indicate that one has embraced a particular philosophy or perspective.
Alice: Hey, did you hear that Joe is working on the OBAMA campaign?
Bob: Yeah, he really drank the Kool-Aid on that one.
Chris: I’m thinking about attending a OBAMA rally
Donna: Whatever you do, don’t drink the Kool-Aid!

I hope every one of you creeps who bash McCains age have to deal with age discrimination when you get to be over 50. I hope your kids (that’s if anyone even wants to reproduce with you) stick you in a dirty old age home and never visit you. Do any of you have parents or grand parents this age? Are they useless and decrepid? Obama really has the advantage here. Anything said against him is “racist” but everyone feels free to trash McCain on his age. Why can’t you focus on the issues? Because Obamanots don’t care about issues! Go ahead and ask any Obamanot why they are voting for him. If they are African American it’s because he is the same color (they don’t come out and say it but duh..90%) and if they are Caucasion it’s because he stands for “Hope” and “Change”…what a bunch of sheep. Ask them what he has ever accomplished and you just get a blank stare and drool. The joke is on you because all of the old folks you bash go to the polls without fail and they will be damned if they will let some slimey, egotistical empty suit into the White House.

The only one this news really helps its Mitt Romney, McCain has lost all of the flexibility he had on picking his VP, which pretty much eliminates the element of surprise.
Romney is well known but not well liked, he was a liberal before he flip flopped into becoming a “conservative”, he pretty much only delivers the Mormon vote and looses a lot of the evangelical vote, they are going to be pissed if McCain chooses him.
Trust me, evangelicals wont vote for a Moron, I mean Mormon, well in the case of Romney all of the above.

Can you imagine having someone who was known by his schoolmates as “Punk” when in high school, as President of the U.S.? So, if he gets one of these check-ups every 3 months he will be due for one just 10 days before the November election. Set a reminder to be looking for the results of that checkup just before Halloween. If we don’t get a report, you can assume that McCain either has had a relapse of melanoma, or he has postponed his checkup to avoid the possibility of being diagnosed as having cancer just before the election.
I do feel sorry for McCain because most articles that talk about his skin cancer note that he was left exposed to the sun without shade or sunscreen for a lot of his time in captivity in Viet Nam. His cancer is almost certainly a continuing reminder of the service he gave to our country. That said, while I supported him 2000, I think McCain’s time has passed and the nation is ready for a new generation of leadership.

Posted by: Cy Guy | July 28, 2008, 7:25 pm 7:25 pm

Chattyway, You should get the fatcs straight, but facts just get into your old way dont they? He wasnt called a punk in high school. Lots of people have been called punks in high school, you included, Im betting. No his NICKNAME was PUNK, he was known constantly as that. Thats what they called him, by name, thats what they said “Hey PUNK, what you doing?” As classmates, they knew him probably better than most anybody and this is what they all thought of him. He hasnt change much according to more recent reports. He supposedly has even threatened his own Repugnant senators. What kind of behavior is this for someone his age? Its because he is still a PUNK. The tree is known by its fruit…

Farrakhan, no matter how much you dislike the guy, is NOT a terrorist, thank you very much. I know you bigots dont see any problem with putting that label on ANYONE (especially anyone of a different skin color) who is different than you, but it is the duty of peace minded people to set you straight.

chattyway – And how smart do you have to be to stay consistent on the issues. What does McCain have 60 confirmed flip-flops and counting? You’ve got to be kidding me. And Bush is an idiot. That’s been confirmed. And that makes McCain twice as dumb for voting with him over 90% of the time.

The first thing that voters are going to ask Themselves is who do i really trust McCain or Obama ….Most of American’s don’t trust Obama to many bad things out there on him to really trust him…..Alot of American’s don’t really know Obama and what they do know they don’t like.. Obama has been acting like his already the President and it doesn’t look good for him to do this ..We already have a President…I really don’t see Obama as our next President because of the unknown and the known the American people already know about him…

Chattyway, The relevance of his being called Punk as a knickname is that it shows his bad character traits. He has threatened physical violence on some senators more recently and that shows a consistancy of the very same character flaws, and reinforces the fact that he has temper problems and is a loose cannon, not to be trusted in the White House. You say that you really dont care how other senators feel about him, so you probably arent concerned that many of them are afraid of him, and what might happen if he was in charge of our miltary. Of course I am guessing you consider that a good thing. I guess I will just drink more of the Kool-Aid, as you say, and you keep on eating that B-S. By the way I understand there will be Kool-Aid on the inaugural day celebrations. I hope you can attend!

Chattyway, Oh my God. Are you actually claming to be a speaker of truth? Are you saying that you stand up for whats RIGHT? I believe that only in the political sense,”RIGHT”. Was that a fruedian slip? haha You cant possibly be claiming to be speaking “facts” when you claim Obama is so high on drugs that he cant press a button, or that he is “beyond dumb”, and an “idiot”. I doubt very much that you would compare to his I.Q score, but it would be fun to observe, also what “facts” are you quoting when you claim he wants to give the U.N. 787 billion more of our tax dollars? You claim that Obama is a crook, and a corrupt politician and racist. These are facts that you personally know? I think you are a liar. You are childish and ignorant, and quite literally show your I.Q. by your idiotic ramblings. If you are an example of a regular Mccain supporter, I am relieved.

HOW MANY OF YOU ARE ADDICTED TO THE OBAMA KOOL-AID? IF SO PLEASE SEEK HELP BEFORE ITS TO LATE.
reference to the 1978 cult mass-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana.

Many voters have concerns about John McCain’s health issues. Many wonder, and mainstream media refuses to ask, if John McCain suffers from PTSD from his the five years of captivity, including three years in solitary and torture so extreme that, as he put it, “broke” him to the point he attempted suicide several times. One of the most important considerations with regard to medical predictions of future PTSD, is how the initial trauma was dealt with.
In 1999, Dr. Michael M. Ambrose, director of the Robert E. Mitchell Center for Prisoner of War Studies, was contacted by John McCain to conduct a mental health review. The quality of the review is a matter of dispute as some say Dr. Ambrose did a full medical exam of the patient and others say the doctor only reviewed McCain’s old medical records.
After the evaluation was completed, John McCain’s 1999 campaign released a statement by Dr. Ambrose, which stated:
“McCain has never been diagnosed with or treated at the center for a psychological or psychiatric disorder (The term PTSD first appeared in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1980, years after John McCain’s initial military medical evaluations.). He has been subject to an extensive battery of psychological tests and following his last examination in 1993, we judged him to be in good physical and mental health.”
The McCain campaign press release included a statement by Dr. Ambrose, which reveals John McCain created a fantasy world in order to escape the reality of captivity and torture. They further stated McCain always heard the guards coming with his food, but “was often so much in his private world, that he strongly resented their coming around and bringing him back to reality by intruding. He was enjoying his fantasies so much.”
“findings suggest that it is less what happens at the time of a trauma (e.g., disrupted encoding) that predicts PTSD than what occurs thereafter (i.e., persistent avoidance).” [John Briere, Ph.D., Catherine Scott, M.D., and Frank Weathers, Ph.D.]
The keyword here is ‘persistent avoidance’ which was evidenced by the findings of Dr. Ambrose.
“The presence of dissociative symptoms soon after exposure to trauma has been found to predict the subsequent development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)” [Gary Tucker, MD, Published in Journal Watch Psychiatry October 9, 2002]
“The amount of dissociation that follows directly after a trauma predicts PTSD” [American Psychiatric Association]
“Individuals that are more likely to dissociate during a traumatic event are considerably more likely to develop chronic PTSD” [Brown, Scheflin and Hammond (1998). Memory, Trauma Treatment, And the Law.]
“In several studies, dissociation at the time of a trauma (peritraumatic dissociation) has been found to predict symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder at follow-up assessments’ [Michael W. Otto, PhD, Published in Journal Watch Psychiatry July 21, 2005]
” early numbing contributed to the prediction of later PTSD” [Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety, Psychiatry Department, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine]
“Peritraumatic dissociation is frequently considered to be a risk factor for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)” [Doris C. Breh PhD, Department of Psychotraumatology, Psychosomatic University Hospital Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany]
Ambrose later told the Associated Press “He had a very healthy way of dealing with his experiences.” One of the examiners even noted that McCain had improved his ability to control his infamous temper due to his years of torture and captivity.
Anyone familiar with Workers’ Compensation or personal injury cases understands full well you can pull the right strings or pay a ‘company’ doctor to say anything necessary to help your client.
It is worth noting the1999 McCain campaign only released a small number of redacted medical records, the pages were not allowed to be photocopied and only a few select news organizations were privy to what few medical records were made available under these conditions.
John McCain has a consistent history of out of control outbursts of anger and even admits an adverse reaction to the sound of jangling keys. Author Robert Timberg, who McCain has said “knows more about me than I do,” calls these episodes “an eruption of temper out of all proportion to the provocation” and says they are a result of Vietnam coming “back to haunt him.”
VA studies have shown time and again that POWs suffer a much higher risk of developing PTSD than combat veterans. Even so, to this date, mainstream media still has not pushed for full disclosure of John McCain’s military medical records and refuses to ask the one simple question:
‘Is John McCain emotionally fit for the most stressful job in our country, the President of the United States, our Commander in Chief?”

Hey Obama supporters – “I pity the fool who drinks the Kool Aid.”
That was a reference to 80s sitcom The A-Team starring Mr. T. Mr. T played B.A. Barracus, who often pitied fools with his clever catchphrase “I pity the fool.”
One lasting legacy of the A-Team is the phrase “I pity the fool,” which is often used by unfunny idiots in a sad attempt to be funny or ironic. It has come to mean “I am not funny, and my references are outdated.”
The phrase can also be used to denote that you pity fools.

Based on some of the comments from both McCain and Obama supporters, it scares me that these people will be voting. Even more disturbing, is the fact that people are vehemently against the other candidate rather than strongly supportive of their own candidate. My vote is up for grabs–don’t criticize the other guy, give me some specifics about what your guy will do. I suppose if the yahoos running don’t know what they stand for—just what the other guy doesn’t stand for—we’re all in for a world of hurt either way.

Malignant Melanoma is the #1 killer of all skin cancers in America. To have had four of these tumors removed already & possibly one the other day proves that he is currently battling cancer at age 72 – All this while interviewing for the MOST demanding and CRITICAL job in the US. All the numerous gaffes, forgotten votes, non-votes, anger issues, flip-flops, war obsession aside, McCain’s health status is NOT SUFFICIENT for the office of president of the US.

FRIGHTFUL!!!!!! This old man he plays one, he play nick knack on my horn with a …….this old man came rolling home. Please, America, let McCain go home and take a rest for his remaining days on earth. Consider this: SERIOUSLY – if he should be so lucky to win, Senator John McCain will not last six months in the White House. This man is old, feeble, forgetful, painfully slow, and disgusting.
