McCain: Maybe Cigarettes Will Kill the Iranians
ABC News’ Bret Hovell Reports: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., made an off the cuff joke Tuesday about cigarettes killing Iranians.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee was asked about the number of exports going to Iran, specifically the increase in cigarette exports.
McCain looked surprised at that fact and in a line somewhat reminiscent of his "bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran" comment last year said, "Maybe that’s a way of killing them." Then he followed it up quickly noting that it was a joke.
McCain made the remark during a visit to Primanti Brothers Sandwich shop in Pittsburg, Pa.
The senator’s humor has gotten him into some trouble before. Last April he jokingly sang "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran" to the tune of The Beach Boys classic "Barbara Ann" song. That "bomb Iran" moment became a sensation on YouTube and Democrats used the video to knock McCain’s temperament.

McCain, of course, is a highly visible figure as a presidential nominee. He’s showing a lack of judgement and deference to his position by his off cuff remarks. But most importantly, his humor is frightening because it may foreshadow his international behavior in the Middle East.

Are bombs or cigs faster? Two dumb comments that McCain thinks are jokes. No wonder the Iranians want to develop nukes. John wants to use a combo of Raytheon and Marboro to finish these poor people off.

A typical disregard for human life from Mr. McCain.
Posted by: Pete | July 8, 2008, 8:27 pm 8:27 pm
This sort of “off the cuff” material may just be a true index into the would-be prexy’s character. To show such disregard for human life belies the posture he has attempted to foist on the electorate of a compassionate and caring “old man”
If I were a Republican I would be worried about that. Especially on top of that awful smile he pulls which looks like the rictus of death. Do we want a President who talks about human beings so callously? I hope not. George Bush gave us enough death dealing with Iraq we do not need another round!!

As long as those in high places continue to think of our fellow world citizens in this manner, chances for world peace is not very good. These careless, insentive remarks demonstrate just what kind of a president John McCain would make. I don’t believe military people be in the Whitehouse anyway. They are what we need in war, in the battlefield, but not in office.

– “Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno.”
– “Time was I could knock up Cleopatra just by winking at her”
– “Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran”
– “Maybe that’s a way of killing them.” [re: exporting cigarettes to Iran]
There’s alot more but you get the idea.

Senator made a comment that is all to true. Cigarettes kill millions of people worldwide each year. We have reduced our smoking to 20% of adults. If Iran wants cigarettes, then sell to them. We don’t want them here. And it will kill 1/3 of Iranians who become addicted smokers. Let’s stick to the point. Senator McCain is right. It is sad, but true.

Apparently McCain also has a gambling problem. McCain’s passion for gambling has never been a secret. According to a recent NY Times article, aides say McCain tends to play for a few thousand dollars at a time but avoids taking markers, or loans, from the casinos, which he has helped regulate in Congress. “He never, ever plays on the house,” says Mark Salter, a McCain adviser. The goal, say several people familiar with his habit, is never financial. He loves the thrill of winning and the camaraderie at the table. Only recently have McCain’s aides urged him to pull back from the pastime. In the heat of the G.O.P. primary fight last spring, he announced on a visit to the Vegas Strip that he was going to the casino floor. When his aides stopped him, fearing a public relations disaster, McCain suggested that they ask the casino to take a craps table to a private room, a high-roller privilege McCain had indulged in before. His aides, with alarm bells ringing, refused again, according to two accounts of the discussion.
=========
His “passion” for gambling sounds problematic to me. In addition to being a troubling bad habit, it is also not the mentality you would want for someone with their finger on the “launch button”.

Kitty-Actually the radars work wonders. The real way to stop terrorists is to take away the incentive to do harm. So far our policies of overwhelming support for Israel, having bases in the arab world, and threatening those that believe differently with violence only enhances the dangers. Remember our sanctions on Iraq over those ten years killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children. We should only expect some blowback.

– maybe 100 years more in Iraq
– likely bomb bomb Iran
– more conservative SCOTUS judges

– tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations

Here are some more troubling little known facts about McCain:
– Finished in the bottom 1 % at the Naval Academy
– Was known as a reckless pilot among his Navy colleagues
– Crashed five jets in his short career as a Navy pilot
– Member of the Keating 5 scandal
– Has questionable connections to scores of lobbyists
– Has serious anger management problems
– He was a womanizer and adulterer
– Divorced his first wife because she was disfigured in a car accident.
– Called his current wife a “trollop” and a “c*nt” when she did something to annoy him.
– Laughed off a comment about Hillary being a “b*tch” at one of his rallys.
– Made disgusting joke about Chelsea saying she was so ugly because “Janet Reno was her father”.
McCain is no honorable guy, in fact, he is quite a sleaze. Being a “war hero” or POW does not excuse this ugly side of his character nor make him qualified to be POTUS.

From a recent Politico article:
Top GOP officials are growing increasingly uneasy about the direction of the McCain presidential campaign. They are frustrated by what they view as inconsistent messaging, sluggish fundraising and an organization that is too slow to take shape.
“It’s not just message or not having just one single meta-theme to compete with Obama,” said a veteran Republican strategist with close ties to McCain’s top advisers. “It’s not just fundraising, which is mediocre. And it’s not even just organization, which is just starting or nonexistent in many states.” “McCain’s campaign seems not to have a game plan. I don’t see a consistent message,” said Ed Rollins, a veteran of Republican presidential campaigns. “As someone who has run campaigns, this campaign is not running smoothly.

I am sure you heard Ron Paul utter these world on more than on occasion. I will most likely go with Barr, although Nader or that constitutional party guy are better choices than the top two. Apparently McCain never schedules events on weekends and his campaign refuses to explain why. We can only assume it is because of his advanced age and health considerations that he needs to rest on the weekends to be able to keep up the fast pace during the week. For the record: McCain, was not a “fighter pilot” during the Vietnam War — he was a bomber pilot. McCain flew the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. This aircraft was used almost exclusively to drop Napalm, White Phosphorous, and Cluster Bombs on military targets as well as civilian ones. McCain himself admitted to dropping bombs on civilians — he confessed on “60 Minutes” in 1997, “I bombed innocent women and children.” Does that make McCain a war hero?

Here’s a critical description of McCain from a fellow Republican:
In January, MS Senator Thad Cochran explained his decision to endorse former governor Mitt Romney, R-Mass., thusly: “The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine,” Cochran told The Boston Globe’s Michael Kranish. “He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.”
==========
He worries me too. He is not fit to be POTUS.

McCain’s nonconcern for human life will be legendary by the time November comes around. Every time he opens his mouth, something stupid spills out. Plus, McCain cannot seem to get his political positions straight either. Updated McCain flip-flops:
* McCain supported the drilling moratorium; now he’s against it.
* McCain strongly opposes a windfall-tax on oil company profits. Three weeks earlier, he was perfectly comfortable with the idea.
* McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.
* McCain defended “privatizing” Social Security. Now he says he’s against privatization (though he actually still supports it).
* McCain wanted to change the Republican Party platform to protect abortion rights in cases of rape and incest. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain thought the estate tax was perfectly fair. Now he believes the opposite.
* He opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects. When the Supreme Court reached the same conclusion, he called it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”
* McCain said he would “not impose a litmus test on any nominee.” He used to promise the opposite.
* McCain believes the telecoms should be forced to explain their role in the administration’s warrantless surveillance program as a condition for retroactive immunity. He used to believe the opposite.
* McCain supported storing spent nuclear fuel at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain supported moving “towards normalization of relations” with Cuba. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Hamas. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Syria. Now he believes the opposite.
* He argued the NRA should not have a role in the Republican Party’s policy making. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain supported his own lobbying-reform legislation from 1997. Now he doesn’t.
* He wanted political support from radical televangelists like John Hagee and Rod Parsley. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain supported the Lieberman/Warner legislation to combat global warming. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain pledged in February 2008 that he would not, under any circumstances, raise taxes. Specifically, McCain was asked if he is a “‘read my lips’ candidate, no new taxes, no matter what?” referring to George H.W. Bush’s 1988 pledge. “No new taxes,” McCain responded. Two weeks later, McCain said, “I’m not making a ‘read my lips’ statement, in that I will not raise taxes.”
* McCain is both for and against a “rogue state rollback” as a focus of his foreign policy vision.
* McCain says he considered and did not consider joining John Kerry’s Democratic ticket in 2004.
* In 1998, he championed raising cigarette taxes to fund programs to cut underage smoking, insisting that it would prevent illnesses and provide resources for public health programs. Now, McCain opposes a $0.61-per-pack tax increase, won’t commit to supporting a regulation bill he’s co-sponsoring, and has hired Philip Morris’ former lobbyist as his senior campaign adviser.
* McCain has changed his economic worldview on multiple occasions.
* McCain has changed his mind about a long-term U.S. military presence in Iraq on multiple occasions.
* McCain is both for and against attacking Barack Obama over his former pastor at his former church.
* McCain believes Americans are both better and worse off than they were before Bush took office.
* McCain is both for and against earmarks for Arizona.
* McCain believes his endorsement from radical televangelist John Hagee was both a good and bad idea.
* McCain’s first mortgage plan was premised on the notion that homeowners facing foreclosure shouldn’t be “rewarded” for acting “irresponsibly.” His second mortgage plan took largely the opposite position.
* McCain vowed, if elected, to balance the federal budget by the end of his first term. Soon after, he decided he would no longer even try to reach that goal.
* In February 2008, McCain reversed course on prohibiting waterboarding.
* McCain used to champion the Law of the Sea convention, even volunteering to testify on the treaty’s behalf before a Senate committee. Now he opposes it.
* McCain was a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to illegal immigrants’ kids who graduate from high school. Now he’s against it.
* On immigration policy in general, McCain announced in February 2008 that he would vote against his own legislation.
* In 2006, McCain sponsored legislation to require grassroots lobbying coalitions to reveal their financial donors. In 2007, after receiving “feedback” on the proposal, McCain told far-right activist groups that he opposes his own measure.
* McCain said before the war in Iraq, “We will win this conflict. We will win it easily.” Four years later, McCain said he knew all along that the war in Iraq war was “probably going to be long and hard and tough.”
* McCain said he was the “greatest critic” of Rumsfeld’s failed Iraq policy. In December 2003, McCain praised the same strategy as “a mission accomplished.” In March 2004, he said, “I’m confident we’re on the right course.” In December 2005, he said, “Overall, I think a year from now, we will have made a fair amount of progress if we stay the course.”
* McCain went from saying he would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade to saying the exact opposite.
* McCain went from saying gay marriage should be allowed, to saying gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed.
* McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as “an agent of intolerance” in 2002, but then decided to cozy up to the man who said Americans “deserved” the 9/11 attacks.
* McCain used to oppose Bush’s tax cuts for the very wealthy, but he reversed course in February.
* On a related note, he said 2005 that he opposed the tax cuts because they were “too tilted to the wealthy.” By 2007, he denied ever having said this, and insisted he opposed the cuts because of increased government spending.
* In 2000, McCain accused Texas businessmen Sam and Charles Wyly of being corrupt, spending “dirty money” to help finance Bush’s presidential campaign. McCain not only filed a complaint against the Wylys for allegedly violating campaign finance law, he also lashed out at them publicly. In April, McCain reached out to the Wylys for support.
* McCain supported a major campaign-finance reform measure that bore his name. In June 2007, he abandoned his own legislation.
* McCain opposed a holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., before he supported it.
* McCain was against presidential candidates campaigning at Bob Jones University before he was for it.
* McCain was anti-ethanol. Now he’s pro-ethanol.
* McCain was both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag.
* McCain decided in 2000 that he didn’t want anything to do with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, believing he “would taint the image of the ‘Straight Talk Express.’” Kissinger is now the Honorary Co-Chair for his presidential campaign in New York.
Straight Talk Express, indeed!

Cindy McCain is the beneficiary of a beer distributing fortune amassed by her parents and estimated to be worth $100 million or more. Though the McCains maintain separate finances, Cindy McCain’s family fortune has boosted her husband’s political career at critical junctures, helping to fund his inaugural 1982 run for Congress and helping to subsidize his current presidential campaign when it all-but-went broke last year.

Bottom line: Drunks helped save the McCain campaign.

She would of Lived years longer but she was always dieing for a cigg. Excuse that one too. Besides, their Lungs & our Lungs all function the same,it’s a No Brainer. BTW I like John McCains energy policy too. And his agenda to help make more jobs. America wants & needs jobs, not welfare. America is in debt enough, McCain will at least make a serious dent in trying to balance the budget. That will make the dollare stronger too,& with more jobs we can start to crawl out of the HOLE Bush & Cheney put us in.

This is not a Christian way. I am sorry to hear that. this does not help. The government of Iran has nothing to do with all people.

CNN’s John Roberts went after McCain and his budget plan this morning – Roberts will not be sitting in the special section of the ‘Lap Dog Express’ McCain’s camp has reserved for the ‘good’ reporters.
Today’s New York Times came through with a double-barreled shot at McCain, publishing one piece pointing out that McCain’s economic policies have slithered all over the ideological map, and a second piece noting that his balanced-budget promise is, well, complete horse-bleep. McCain has no idea what is happening to the economy or what to do about it – all he has to offer is more Bush rhetoric.
This morning, in another interview, McCain was asked if the country is in a recession – his answer? “If we’re technically in a recession or not, I would imagine that we are, but the major thing is, Americans are hurting, and Americans don’t like it and they think the country’s in the wrong direction.”
What you have here is McCain’s political problem in a nutshell. If he acknowledges that the country’s in a recession, then he has to explain why he’s basically offering a continuation of Bush’s economic policies. If he doesn’t, he looks out of touch with Americans’ economic pain. Out of touch -I hear that phrase a great deal in relation to McCain.

It’s not only the “ciggarettes” joke. It’s the “bomb bomb Iran”. It’s my sense McCain wants a war with Iran. How will McCain balance our budget within his first term when we’re at war in Afganistan and Iraq. Iraq alone costing $12 billion a MONTH.

I guess I should just add that an adequate plan for eliminating the bunkers that store a lot of the Iranian technology involves using newer nuclear weapons. Of these, the fallout will kill at least a million innocent Iranians should we commit to this. The reprisal from them will require a ground force. This, in turn, WILL require a draft (anybody who says otherwise is lying their ass off to you). We have no extra troops to feed to another war. Especially when theatres in Iraq and Afghanistan are requiring more because of the insurgent activity.

McCain either wants to bomb the Iraqi people, kill them with cigrattes, or kill them with small pox. Since when are the Iraqi people themselves to blame for what is happening in their country? They did not ask to be invaded or occupied, they did not ask that thoudands of their civilians including children should die, the Iraqi PEOPLE did not ask for any of this. But good old BUSH wanted a legacy for his presidency – so thousands of people have died including our own young men and women – to give Bush a share of some pages in a history book. Some legacy!

I see Backtrack is trying to woo the Latino votes by giving, under his health care plan, millions of illegal immigrants health care coverage at American citizens expense, give illegals drivers license, and now, wants all children to be bilingual. His health care plan will cost $60 billion, and plus, Backtrack wants to raise the Cap tax which will trickle down and have a negative effect on everything in our economy. Backtrack will bankrupt our economy even worse than it is now. Obama has no idea what it means to be President and I’m so glad he will lose in November. Also, I think its GREAT that the Veterans of America are starting and spent $2 million on a negative ad campaign against NoBama. People,
The fact that iranians buy so many american products goes to show the glamour that is attached to anything american. from clothes, cigarettes and gadgets in Iran as in many places around the world. So where did this story that “they (iranians) hate us (Americans)” come from? clearly this is a complex situation.
Ther governement argues that the sanctions are designed to hurt the regime and ot the people. What akes right to hurt the elected leaders /govt of another nation? does that not hurt the people also?

Vets for Freedom is spending $1.5 million on ads that will run on national cable television and in five states in July — the first set of ads in a multimillion dollar campaign in coming months touting the troop buildup, Pete Hegseth, the 25,000-member group’s chairman, said in a telephone interview Saturday. Aimed at “informing the American people about the truth regarding progress in Iraq and Afghanistan,” the issue ads will feature veterans of the war describing the accomplishments they’ve seen since the buildup began in early 2007.

Voteing McCain – A mistake was made in 1948, clearly. The Holocaust did occur, and the Iranian president is a fool for thinking otherwise. He needs to go just like Bush. The current situation involves Israel continuing land grabs for settlements in the West Bank, and Israel demarcating the Palestinian territories. While I don’t agree with the violence of Hamas, Israel should be resisted hard for these atrocities. The Iranian president supports this resistance which can be seen as legitimate.

In a way, a McCain presidency might just be the best thing that could happen to America.
It would – without question – be the absolute final nail in the Republican coffin.
Twenty years from now, a re-invigorated America would be looking back at the extinct Republican Party with the same affection we hold for the Know Nothing Party of the 1850′s.
The extreme pain and suffering of the Bush Years continuing under McCain might be worth it.

I have noticed that now, since the media is turning their backs on their “golden boy” Backtrack, that I don’t see Roland Martin or Donna Bazille on CNN (NoBama’s news channel). You see, the only reason why NoBama was “selected” not “elected” the Dem nominee is because of the media and of course, the StupidDelegates and the DNC. Now, that he is the nominee, Backtrack is doing just that…backtracking on all his stances he used to get “selected” and now the Dems are facing a loss in November. I Love It! One way to survive in this world is to not take every little thing so seriously. There is nothing wrong with McCain or his sense of humor. In a world full of evil and people doing horrendous things to each other, a little levity is sometimes called for. Being the astute person he is, he immediately said it was a joke. Alas, some people can’t take a joke, and are looking for every little straw to turn and twist into the wind. He could have said: “We’ll quickly fix that by banning all cigarette exports to Iran… drive them crazy without cigarettes… make them give up on destroying others.” How’s that?

Ben Straub 1948 as it were, is still not for Iran to butt in, it is for Isreal & Palestine & the Britts, US & europe to help work together & resolve. They were All involved in it , in some way. Now they must find a civil way to resolve it. as soon as everyone grows up & realizes this problem is an inheritance & must be resolved from this day forward, that they cannot go back in History , but find a way to live & go forward, then they begin to really live. America had to resolve the problem with the Indians. We couldn’t change History, but needed to work together to resolve & go forward. So must they. Iran needs to learn how to work & play well with others.& stay off Isreal’s grass.

Manitu – Most of the civilized world follows our lead, not because it is the right thing to do, but because we are the big dog on the block so to speak. It is easy to view the arabs that stand up to fight us as evil and crazy, when in fact many of our policies present hardships on their lives causing great resentment. Much of the western work sides with us because of world energy supplies, thinking that the cheap oil is owned to us when in fact it belongs to the people living in the arab states. Until we learn to treat people over there with respect and respect their sovereignty, an argument could be made to justify their continued resistance.

But it’s all good, absent any Iraqi government officials calling for the death of U.S. citizens, right?

Obama, even though he is moving quickly to the center now with his flip-floping, would suddenly and dangerously take the country to the far left. He would raise taxes immediately and substantially, increasing the top bracket to at least 40 percent, lifting the cap on Social Secruity taxes, and doubling capital gains taxes and taxes on dividends. Obama would rolll back the increases in the inheritance tax as well. America could not afford an Obama presidency.

You are correct most live in poverty, not because of money, but rather education and will power to succeed. American Indians do have opportunities. I didn’t bring up the American Indians. I have to agree with some of the posts here. Obama would definitely do the following:
* He would socialize medicine in America throught a federal insurance program that would include illegal immigrants.
*He would weaken the PATRIOT Act in important ways and would increase our vulnerability to terriorists.
*He would weaken the standards for improved public education.
*He would lower penalties for some of our most dangerous drug criminals and give many a free pass to leave prison.
Obama would not be good for our country. I hope and pray that America will do their research and see that he has a whole other agenda. If elected, Obama would bring very dark days of stress and strife to the land of the free!

So when should America start paying its bills then. Go find a chart of the national debt somewhere and notice what starting in 1983. Apart from the latter years of Clinton the deficit and debt has continued to skyrocket. At some point you have to pay the bills or the creditors come to take your stuff. You want China knocking on your door demanding payment?

Ronnie Reagan thought enough of the Iranians to enter into secret dealings with them and hand over truck loads of sophisticated weapons to them. US corporations have been making quite a tidy profit dealing with the Iranians. Their money is as good as anyone’s I guess. The bottom line is all that matters.

As for us Native Americans.
Listen up!
90% tribes where forced to live on land that cannot be used for agriculture so they where meant to starve. They where stripped of their livestock and their fisheries where poisoned so that they starve. They have no water irrigation to pump water to grow even the simple veggies. Some where forced into the swamps in the South and in the North they where forced in the mountains to starve. Only a hand fill of Tribes own casinos, the other make do..

McCain says this because he knows who the enemy is unlike Obama who wants to have therapy with them. I dont remember the American Colonists trying to work out an agreement with the British in the 1770′s? Did the British respond to negotiations? Happy July 4th

He has a callousness and insensitivity that disturbs me alot. I don’t think I will be voting for him now. I’ve lived a long time and I’ve learned that kindness and character counts. I know Mr. McCain suffered greatly as a young man, but I don’t know that it made him a more empatheic person. He does not seem like a very kind or caring man to me.

They have no health clinics built near them so that if they get sick, most hospitals won’t take them because they don’t have insurance.
Truly most Senators Dems and Reps don’t care for the Natives in their states.
McCain is the worse of them all. He give more respect to Mexicans in his home State because they are a big voters bloc. Most Natives in AZ hate and want Obama to win the Election.
Some Native are not even made US citizens, which a crime of humanity..
We have Natives in jail for not letting their children attend schools meant to strip them of their Native traditions…

I agree, I don’t think McCain should have made this remark. I do, however, think that it is being blown way out of proportion here. I can see where McCain has a lot of resentment toward Iran, as many Americans do. I think he was, maybe, thinking of the leaders that hate Israel and America so bad that he was referencing this remark. I don’t know. However, the Iran/Israel turmoil is escalating and I would rather have McCain in office than Obama. Experience does matter in foreign affairs.

kitty—- over half of the presidents this nation have had have smoked in the whitehouse. for thousands of years smoking was ok now in the last 20 years it is evil. and i see the world just the way 72% of americans do that is we need to take care of ourselves and stop putting out noses into other nations business. we are not the world cops. and if we are these nations need to start paying us. because the working class people of america cant pay it anymore. if the rich and republicans want more war then they hsould pay more taxes to pay for it and send there kids to war instead of us poor kids that have to go and die so cheney and haliburton can get rich.

Tim writes ” …I can see where McCain has a lot of resentment toward Iran, as many Americans do…”
really?
i wonder what % of Americans know why radical students stormed our embassy, took the hostages they did in the ’70′s?
because in the 50′s, under the British promting pres. Ike, we help throw a coup, paying Iranian thugs to run through the streets of the capitol yelling “long live Communism, long live Mussadiq!”, trying to link one of the first demorcratically elected president in the Middle East to Stalin, during the Cold War. why? because he was going to nationalize Iran’s oil from Britain.
ever here of British Petroleum (BP)?
we installed the puppet goverment of the Shah, who’s secret intell. tortured, killed anyone in jail raised a voice.
those students stormed the very embassy the Brits and Americans used to stage the over throw, of a president who was a securlarist, NOT an Ayatollah, not a fundamentalist.
i wonder how fellow Americans would respond if China or Russian over threw our goverment?

It’s over the top when it appears the reporter expects us to believe that telling a joke at a pizza shop is worse than Mr and Mrs Obama plying their young daughters in a nationwide TV hollywood interview for a hopeful campaign advantage…how low can they get? where is the equal time for the other candidates?

Tom, you didn’t read the Koran very closely. There is instruction to conduct jihad which is every muslim responsibility and duty. Jihad is not considered just some evangelical support like christian missionary work. From some muslim friends, they explained that this means if you can’t physically fight, then you need to donate money to the cause. People like Farrakhan, Hamas, etc. have endorsed Obama – it’s like you need to check the facts more closely. Where do you think all the money that Obama campaign has received comes from, don’t you ever wonder about that?

alexander m. – never did any other person, who wasn’t even the official nominee for president -yet, ever have their children engaged in a hollywood interview. Yes, there have been kids having fun like on the whitehouse easter egg roll, but never before using them in this way to pander for their parents. Obama is the first to cross this line, which shows his poor decision-making.

Joe’s quote, after pointing out that Farrakhan supports Obama: “Where do you think all the money that Obama campaign has received comes from, don’t you ever wonder about that?” Well, Joe, you’ve got us, there. It must all come from radical Muslims. What were we thinking assuming it came from tens of millions of Americans? I for one am ashamed that I never “wondered” enough to jump to the conclusion that it all is from people who support a secret conspiracy to turn America Islamic.

No tom you are wrong. there is only one quran. there are different transmissions (different spellings and punctuations)but they still mean the exact same thing. for example, the writing of the Quran according to Hafs transmission in surah 91:15 reads “wa la yakhaafu”, while the writing of the Quran according to Warsh transmission in surah 91:15 reads “fa la yakhaafu”. No difference at all. So to answer your question, no; there is no different qurans.

This story is actually very significant, because it’s not the first time McCain has callously joked about killing Iranians. I’ve known people like him, the kind of people who’ll tell you an offensive racist joke and really be surprised when you don’t think it’s funny. He has shown everyone what he thinks of Iranians; NOT JUST THEIR LEADERS, but the PEOPLE, and I think we should be asking ourselves why he devalues those lives and who ELSE he might have that attitude about….to me, it’s a VERY alarming character defect, and not one I want in my president…beside that, Obama’s kids’ interview is fluff.

McCain talks about killing Iranians in the same way he talked about killing “Gooks” (Viet Cong) 40-years ago. He seems to have forgotten that only 30-years ago Iranians were our friends and attending flight training with him. Killing is apparently easy for McCain. If you give him the chance, he will kill your grandchildren in the Middle East just as Bush has killed your children in Iraq.

The Mcsame joke is in bad taste.
Posted by: pop | July 9, 2008, 2:55 am 2:55 am
It is inappropriate for an American politician, a national and international role model, to joke about death or injury to others especially if the joke might pertain to any particular cultural group or definable element within a society. And for us here in America, it certainly would be less than desirable to have politicians from other countries make such jokes. Politicians must exhibit excellent judgment because their conduct has influence and implications for many people both on a national and international level. In contrast, a comedian on stage can of course joke all over the place about things that a politician could never dare dream of saying; but then again a night club comedian would probably bungle political decisions all over the place. And conversely a politician makes decisions affecting a much wider audience than any comedian could ever humor. Understandably, no doubt just about everyone at one time or another thinks of something stingingly funny, or is reminded of something painfully humorous, but it requires an important restraint of character and valuable employment of discretion for one to subsist from that sense of reward that a joke may seem to bring but in reality may prove to be at the expense of others and lead to further undesirable ramifications and future unforeseen implications-possibly negatively affecting those beyond perceivable levels of understanding. Therefore, as the old saying goes If you don’t have something nice to say about somebody it is better to say nothing at all, is even all the more true for politicians when it comes to gauging the value of coarse humor at the possible expense of others. Politicians who are ready to drop a bomb of a joke on the public while they are in public service would do well to maintain a similar attitude about coarse joking at the expense of others as the authorities do in public airports; namely, that is that it is a crime for anyone to joke about that which could jeopardize the safety of others. In conclusion, it is sad occasion indeed-although apparently a needed occasion-that a story such as this has surfaced; a clear indication that personal political advisors have not sufficiently cautioned this politician never to tread the forbidden territory of publicly expressing coarse humor at the expense of others.

I don’t mean to interrupt your “witty” banter here, but most of you seem so caught up in your partisan-skewed views and religions and appear to be overlooking one very serious thing which makes this story quite news-worthy. It’s this: John McCain has consistently proven that he has a flagrant disregard for human life. I find comments such as this quite frankly frightening…and I do not want a commander and chief who values human life so little.
I may not always articulate what I want to say very well; however, like most people, I do know the difference between the right things to say and the wrong things to say. I value all human life.

Does McCain really want to hinder this exceptional leader from becoming president when he can go fishing somewhere?
Vietnam is over and his service gives him the opportunity to retire and go fishing….

georgia – Obama should do a public service announcement. Let’s hope our missiles don’t strike Iran as well. Seem to me McCain, Bush, and the crazy Iranian president should all retire. Let more rational folks take the reigns.

One important fact that the media, and everybody else, fail to notice, is that McBush didn’t even know that we maintain normal business relations with Iran. Obama has been talking about tough diplomacy, sanctions, and nobody gives him credit. There’s a double standard, it’s like the media feels sorry for the old man, well, then send him to a nursing home instead of the White House. Moments like these reaffirm my support for Barack Obama.

Not only is the erstwhile McCain admitting that cigarettes cause early deaths but the sadder fact is they are killing many fine Americans daily, at the behest of the well-heeled corporate whisper kissers, the GOP(gulp our poop) Party. As they would say in the UK Parliament…here…here…no need to go that far…hiss…boom…wheeze…

McCain’s jokes about killing Iranians always go over so well.

Posted by: INJUNJOE | July 9, 2008, 5:42 pm 5:42 pm
Ben, you make a point about missiles, but what? Iran is the country threatening to blow Israel off the map. They really want to control the region by nuclear weapons and missiles. We cannot be isolationists. You are right, however, we do need rational people making decisions. Bush has made too many mistakes and bad decisions. Obama is too green. McCain has the experience and judgement to get us out of Iraq with security for ourselves and the Iraqi people. He knows what the big picture is. This is no time for light weights and the inexperienced idol who is constantly backtracking to clarify or “refine” his words.
He probably could do a public service announcement on the dangers of smoking, when he quits.

And here is why that bitter old far McCain will lose:
Since Republicans took total control of all 3 branches of Government in 2000, their policy (McCain included) has resulted in::
*Our debt has tripled to 9.4 trillion dollars, due to Republicans (largest increase in history). We owe interest on it
*a deeply damaging trade deficit due to Republican trade policy
*All of this is causing our currency to drop in value (at least 25% of the reason why gas is so expensive
*We are stuck in a war that we didn’t have to go into – and it appears we were lied to about it
*No investments in alternative energy. No warning of oil crises
*Due to Republican insistence of removal of regulation & oversight, we have now suffered a housing crises, a mutual fund near-disaster
*100′s of thousands of jobs outsourced
McCain has a record of voting in-line with the Bush Agenda/Congressional Republicans 87.3% of the time. Keeping this fact in mind, how on earth do people expect a single thing to change at all under him?

Yeah, another classic like his bomb, bomb, bomb Iran gaffe.
Here’s hoping American voters will go for the intelligent candidate instead of voting in another cowboy like Bush.
I would like to know why a candidate for President who ‘jokes’ about murdering the population of another country isn’t subjected to the same scrutiny as the wife (!!!) of a candidate who made a personal comment about her pride in the country…. just goes to show you the media focus is majorly on trashy topics

McCain proved his unworthiness again today – he did not have the courage to show up and vote on the FISA bill even though a not healthy Ted Kennedy did – he did not show up and vote on the GI Bill but then took credit for its passage. McCain’s flip-flop list is so long – it would take 4 postings just to get it all in – McCain flip-flops more times then he changes his underwear. Then, there are the Bush castoffs working on his campaign including Rove. He has a list a mile long of the lobbyists who work for him. He cannot tell Sunnis from Shiites, does not know the difference between Sudan and Somali, calls his wife a cu** and a trollup, in public yet, needs Liebermann tied to his hip in order for McCain to keep his facts straight, tells horrible, demeaning jokes about the Iraqi people, the 300-economist list released by McCain in support of his economic plan was a sham, he described social security as a disgrace and then was dumb enough to keep his mouth going and stated: “Americans have got to understand that we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today. And that’s a disgrace. It’s an absolute disgrace, and it’s got to be fixed.” Of course present-day retirees have always been paid their benefits from the taxes paid by current workers. That has been true from Social Security’s inception. This from a man married to a multi-millionaire and he gets social security checks himself for 100% disability plus his military pension, need I go on….?

PS -and McCain did not show up to vote on the Medicare Bill today either. I also was watching Rachael Maddow today -the Afghanistan and Iraq veterans spokesoman was on the program – McCain has a “D” voting record with them – voting only 20% of the time for veterans programs – Obama had a “B+” – supporting veterans programs 80% of the time.

McBUSH was to busy telling jokes today to even show up and vote on the “FISA” bill..He is such a barrel of laughs..He is almost as funny as Bush, who is the laughing stock of the world. If McBUSH, does not win in November he can quit his Senate job and go on Saturday Night Live. Him and Bush would make a great duo..They would make you laugh until your sick..WELL SICK ANYWAY…

McCain is becoming very adept at sinking his own ship.
When McCain was asked for his position on the birth control, he said—with a nervous laugh–“I certainly do not want to discuss that issue.”
The reporter pressed. “But apparently you’ve voted against—“
“I don’t know what I voted,” McCain said.
The reporter explained that McCain voted against a bill in 2003 that would have required health insurance companies to cover prescription birth control. “Is that still your position?” she persisted.
During the awkward exchange, with several lengthy pauses, McCain said he had no immediate knowledge of the vote. “I’ve cast thousands of votes in the Senate,” McCain said, then continued: “I will respond to—it’s a, it’s a…”
McCain: Dunderhead, useless senator

During a town hall meeting in Colorado (Denver if I remember correctly), McCain had the nerve to lie right to a Vietnam Vet’s FACE!!! When asked by the Vet why McCain didn’t support the latest bill sponsored by the VFW, McCain touted a “PERFECT” record and endorsements by Disabled Veterans of American (DAV), the VFW and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA).
The Fact Is: DAV gave McCain a 20% rating on his voting record (Obama got an 80%)
The Fact Is: VFW has noted that McCain has voted AGAINST them more than 75% of the time, while Obama has voted FOR them about 75%
The Fact Is: IAVA gives McCain a D rating while they give Obama a B+ rating.
McCain stood there and LIED TO THAT VET’S FACE. McCain, you are a disgrace to ALL VETS and Military Personal. And McCain, America knows that you are not just a flip-flopper, you are a BALD FACE LIAR!
A video of McCain’s disgrace is posted on that popular video site that ABC will not allow to be posted.

People including the media always stress that Iran is an enemy of America. However, it’s never mentioned why that’s the case. The US had the CIA overthrow the democratic Premier of Iran in 1953 Mossadeq and install the dictator/tyrant the Shah who was supported by the US and encouraged his brutal oppression on the population. The situation under the Shah got so bad that the people actually welcomed the Ayatollah. Just as the British oppression of Germany after WWI was so bad (see the Treaty of Versailles) that the German people actually welcomed Hitler.
So once again McCain thinks he is justified in killing other people and overthrowing a foreign government (see how well that worked in Iraq – in another generation there will be an Ayatollah running Iraq too). If (God forbid) McCain gets elected, he will start a war with Iran, which has about 3 times the population of Iraq and is 4 times the size. McCain will need to draft US citizens to get the manpower for another war, oil prices will double, we will be paying over $8 per gallon and our economy will make the Great Depression look like a party. McCain’s two “jokes” should frighten us more than the Iranians. McCain is Martin Sheen’s character in the Dead Zone and Obama is Christopher Walken’s character.

georgia – I will respectfully disagree. I do not want McCain anywhere near the oval office. By the way, why didn’t the US condemn Israel for their war excersizes in the Persian Gulf. I think what I am trying to point out to you partisan bloggers is that their is a huge double standard when it comes to various countries. Don’t worry about Israel. With 100 nukes, many aimed at Iran, they are not going to be defeated. I remain partial in this discussion, being that I will not vote for either McCain or Obama. I just like calling you guys on the constant fear mongering.

The mock outrage of these posters is great. When did Obamabots become the sour-faced, holier-than-thou snobs…
I, and the rest of America, sort of chuckled. That is certainly cheaper than occupation…was my first thought.
I am trying to figure out who I would least like to have over to a cookout, oversensitive Obamabots, or Fred Phelps, that guy who protests gay funerals.
Not sure anymore…

Do not expect any answer from McBush on any questions you have unless Liberman, is there with him…McBush has to clear every answer with Liberman, before he can answer any questions…McBush is doing a GREAT JOB of sinking the McBUSH / LIBERMAN / BUSH boat all by himself just give him a little more time..The RNC must be in anaphylactic shock by now.. Their boat is on the rocks..

Maybe it’s time for McCain’s handlers to step up and encourage him not to tell jokes. He doesn’t have a very good delivery… and both his timing and choice of material are poor.
Generally speaking, he IS a nice guy.

Ben, Respectfully, this is not fear mongering. It is reality. Put us in Israel’s shoes. If a neighboring country of ours, Colombia for example, had threatened to wipe us off the face of the earth, what would we do? No country is isolated anymore against modern weapons. We prepare for ourselves militarily and diplomatically, and hope to get it right. But, we will not take our defenses for granted. Neither should Israel. John McCain understands all of these issues. He is the most experienced and qualified candidate running.
McCain ’08

Ben, If one of our neighbors had threatened to blow us off the face of the earth, what would we do? Sit and wait, or be prepared? No comfort zones down here anymore. Israel has every right to be prepared. When you are dealing with idiots, there really is not any other choice.
Posted by: georgia | July 10, 2008, 3:30 pm 3:30 pm
I totally agree that every country has a right to protect itself. So if Israel bombs Iran, and Iran rains missles down on Tel Aviv, please don’t post any more double standards.

John McCain has loudly condemned Barack’s willingness to talk to Iran. It is clear he should take his own advice, if the best he can do is spout insults and idiocies in the manner of George Bush. McCain clearly lacks the education, sophistication, diplomacy and basic intelligence required of a United States President in these sensitive and troubled times.
Barack Obama is a worldly person who brings a global vision to the office of president. He represents a major change from the arrogant, swaggering image of an ignorant boob like George Bush, to the image of a fair man with the strength of body and mind to represent our powerful nation.
John McCain is a nice man, but he is not up to this job. Take a chance on substance over appearances. Take a brave chance on youth, energy, education and dedication. Take a chance on REAL change. Help elect Barack Obama our president – and elect a president we can be proud of.
