McCain Touts Surge Success Before Obama’s Overseas Trip

ABC News’ Jennifer Duck reports: Touting the surge strategy, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., declared today "we have succeeded in Iraq" and spoke of his confidence in winning the war in advance of Sen. Barack Obama’s trip to the region.

"I’m happy to tell you we’ve succeeded in Iraq and we—unless we reverse the strategy that’s succeeding we will win this war. But it’s fragile and it must be dictated—the strategy must be dictated by the situation on the ground. Not some artificially, politically schedule for withdraw as sen Obama wants to do," McCain told a crowd in Kansas City, MO.

Reporters questioned McCain on his rhetoric of success at a stop in Grand Haven, MI since in the past McCain has phrased the status in Iraq as "succeeding," as opposed to "succeeded."

McCain told reporters, "Military, economic, political, and all the benchmarks we said that the Iraqi government had to meet" have allowed for the word "succeeded" to be used.

However McCain admitted, "They haven’t met them all. Do they have a lot more to go– distance to go? Yes and it’s very fragile. And can be reversed. But they’ve succeeded and if we will continue this, we will win this war."

He continued saying Obama’s initial plan of withdraw would’ve "lost" the war. "I know how to win wars. And Sen Obama was wrong when he said that the surge would not succeed. And now he says he’s going to evaluate the situation. If we had done what Sen Obama wanted to do, there would be no situation to evaluate because we would’ve lost."

When asked when the war will be won, McCain responded, "I can say the war will be won when we will have the majority of Americans have returned and we have Gen Petraeus and his successor Gen Odierno tell us that the situation is secure. It’s still—we’ve succeed but it’s still fragile."

McCain’s communications director Jill Hazelbaker appeared on cable news channels calling Obama’s trip specifically to Iraq and Afghanistan "a campaign rally overseas" and "one giant photo opportunity."

"Well, Senator Obama is visiting Iraq and Afghanistan. I found it interesting that he released his plan for the way forward in Iraq and Afghanistan prior to visiting the region or talking with any of the commanders on the ground. Let’s drop the pretense that this is a fact-finding trip and call it what it is: the first of its kind campaign rally overseas," Hazelbaker said on Fox News.

At first the presumptive Republican nominee seemed surprised with his staff’s message telling reporters on his campaign bus he would talk to Hazelbaker about her message. "I can only give you my opinion, and I will talk to her. But the fact is, I’m glad that he’s going to Iraq and I think it’s – I’m glad that he’s going to Afghanistan. It’s long, long overdue, if you want to lead this nation and secure our national security."

However, after a flight from Missouri to Michigan, McCain was careful when telling reporters a few legs of Obama’s trip to Europe and the Middle East appear to define it as a political trip. "If he has political rallies in other places, obviously it’s a political trip. But I was speaking specifically.

Double-Talk Express Way…
If we’ve succeeded and the Iraqis want us out then we should just LEAVE. Adopt Obama’s plan and gradually withdraw.

McCain is just continuing Bush’s bad politics. McCain is already saying we’re winning – and the fact is – there’s still a civil war going on in Iraq. People are continuing to die – and despite our soldiers’ valiant efforts – there are still many problems. That’s why we need a new approach to Iraq. That’s why so many people are supporting Senator Obama. People don’t want McCain to keep us there for another 10-15 years – the thing is – we want our soldiers to come home before another 4,100 soldiers die. It’s time for change. We need new leadership in the White House, and Senator Obama is the best candidate for the job.

It’s sad that these Obama bloggers apparently believe the the Surge has not worked. Even Obama KNOWS that the Surge is a HUGE SUCCESS. Probably reason why Obama has not wanted to visit Iraq – He would have to admit the obvious. Violence is way down, people are returning to homes and businesses. Airline starting back up. Iraqi Defense is taking over more and more responsibility. OBAMA PREDICTED THAT THE SURGE WOULD FAIL AND THAT MORE TERRORISTS WOULD SPRING UP AND CREATE MORE CHAOS. THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED – JUST THE OPPOSITE. JUST SHOWS OBAMA’S TOTAL INEXPERIENCE IN FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND NATIONAL DEFENSE.

Senator Obama spoke out against the Iraq before it began and so did my cat. He did not vote against the beginning of the war in the Senate and neither did my cat. Senator Obama needs to “move on”.

It is interesting that my posts are respectful with no use of bad words – but my posts get deleated because they show Obama for what he is. Makes sense now with three network anchors on the Obama’s campaign plane to the middle -east NO DOUBT ABOUT MAJOR NEWS NETWORKS IN THE TANK FOR OBAMA NOW!! WAS FOX INVITED – DUH!!

McCain is caught in a word trap. He says the Iraq war is a “success,” but then insists that we must stay and continue his surge strategy to “win the war.” This is twisted logic.

Manitu.
What was that about network news anchors on Obama’s team to middle-east? I saw your post – but then disappeared.

It doesn’t matter what McCain says, due to financal reasons alone, we will be forced to leave Iraq. We can not afford to stay in Iraq ten years, let alone 100. And we don’t have the personnel available to invade Iran. Simply put we will be forced, and very soon; To do what we did in Vietnam: Namely declare victory and leave. And even McCain has hinted at this on numberous occasions. We will NOT be in Iraq for 100 years. But if we choose to invade Iran we will have no choice but use nuclear weapons to make up for our manpower disadvantage. If anyone feels that it’s reasonable to invade and detonate tactical nukes inside Iran, and feels that they won’t declare war on us in Iraq and back here in the US, they may be dim enough to be a neocon, but they sure as hell aren’t smart enough to lead. Wether they are a man or a woman, young or old, black or white. Negotiate with Iran, listen to what the Iraqis want, and act accordingly, otherwise no one is going to be truly safe. And that includes Israel, wether they want to believe it or not.

Question; When will this war be won? Do you mean we can lose this war? I guess it is when Obama pulls out.

Posted by: Waggdogg | July 17, 2008, 9:54 pm 9:54 pm

Obama is supposed to be going to Europe and the Middle East as a fact finding mission, to save the lives of American soldiers and to insure the security of Americans … but, as usual, Obama is turning his responsibilities into a promotional photo op. Our country’s problems are serious, and it’s getting rather disgusting watching Obama the Opportunist, use America to further his personal ambition and aggrandizement. Also, the three network anchors, and the rest of the media, who are tripping over each other to accompany Obama overseas should be ashamed of themselves.

Obama blew his prediction of the Surge and its value. What MORE is there to discuss!! End of story. Nada!!

I will vote for McCain even if he has to be carried into the oval office with an O2 cart and with paramedics and alzheimers specialists in tow. The alternative, Obama, is unthinkable. Unfortunately, as bad as some say the USA has it (which I really don’t buy – consider the Amish) the world situation, particularly the middle-east has to take top priority. OTHER issues are important, but don’t mean a damn thing if we cannot, nor will not protect ourselves. Obama just does not have the ability, nor experience to perform those functions. Obama’s early prediction of the Surge failing and ensuing chaos in Iraq (just the opposite has occurred) clearly shows his complete lack of knowledge of foreign affairs and national defense.

What is the point of making this trip now? Senator Obama has already stated his position on the Iraq War. Oh, yes, I forgot, he wants it as a taxpayer paid PR trip and photo session. He is not even the legal Democratic candidate yet.

Wow, I just read the headlines, McCain has won another war? When will the troops get to come home?

McCain claims he “knows how to win wars”? Can anybody please explain to me what wars he has won?

In this Era, as can be said of the past, Isn’t it so true that mankind’s one solution in an effort to resolve problems with his fellow brother, has continued to be War. “When will we understand that War is not the answer?” I am definitely not a softy, realizing that in some cases, we have to defend ourselves, but this is a situation we have brought on ourselves, by failing over and over to live in harmony with the Law of cause and effect, which is a natural Law of the Universe and our Being, believe it or not. We should also return to living in harmony with the Law which states, Thou Shalt not Kill. One of the ways to prevent War is non-stop negotiations.

Shiela.
Where is your “Total Bull” when all along McCain has said that the Surge would work and Obama – just the opposite? The Surge was a great success. And to respond to your concern about Afghanistan – it will work well there also. The Iraq question is almost past history – the concern now is Iran and Pakistan which will require at least leaving a token force in Iraq. There ARE plans to begin withdrawing troops beginning in Sept.

The surge worked because Al-Sadir let it. For a time, he didn’t and the surge did suffer set backs.
So now all the Iraqi factions have played kiss and make up, and we’re patting ourselves on the back for it.
McCain is even touting, “we” as in we won. Like he held a rifle and got blood on his boots. How moronic!

Mcain than why are you not willing to start slowly withdrawing like obama says our troops in afghan need help but all of our military is in iraq i say go with obamas plan pull some out of iraq not all and help the guys in afghan!!!

Posted by: angie | July 18, 2008, 9:35 am 9:35 am

Manitu
If the surged worked than why doesnt Bush or mccain want to get out i mean not totally out but start pulling some troops???????? sorry but i think obamas right and the iraq leader wants a time table withdraw and mccain and bush say no way and what is it we have won in iraq anyway?????

Posted by: angie | July 18, 2008, 9:39 am 9:39 am

AP top story, “US, Iraq seek `general time horizon’ on troop cuts”
Not ‘timetable’ and not ‘troop withdrawal’. Time horizon? Whoever heard of that! Pathetic.
And the surge is not over. There are 18,000 more troops in Iraq now than before the surge. They’re just trying to make things look good for McCain.
What wars has McCain won? None. And neither has Obama but at least Obama had the forsight to see that invading Iraq would be a big mistake while McCain was for it even before Bush!
And it is not only the surge that has brought down violence but also the Mahdi Army cease-fire, the Sunni Awakening and all those walls we built in Baghdad to keep the tribes separated from eachother.

Senator Obama’s back yard in Chicago is a war zone of crime and what has he done to stop it? Absolutely nothing. Yet, he thinks he knows how to stop the fighting in countries thousands of miles away. The people of Iraq have been fighting for the last 100 years and this will probably go on regardless of what the USA does. It is true, we should not have invaded and we need to get out ASAP. Senator McCain has the best foreign relations plan.

Who cares who the Europeans prefer … if it was up to France, our next President would be Jerry Lewis. How about focusing on who has the experience, judgement and character to protect us and bring prosperity to Americans … not someone who in the eleventh hour, finally tries to establish foreign policy credentials, in a one week visit, as a transparent political ploy to get himself elected. Where was Obama, when he was supposed to chair the congressional committee on Afghanistan, and never had a single meeting. Why did Obama vote ‘present’ over 100 times in the senate? Even if he manages a political rally in the Roman Coliseum, he’s still just an inexperienced politician, who is not qualified to be President of the United States of America !!!

McCain isn’t even fit to lead this nation one way or the other. Meaning, he’s too old. He can’t handle the job of being president. He can’t handle the travel, the daily grind, the headaches, economics, etc. He’s been wrong on many things and it sounds like he’s the one who has been drinking lots of kool-aid, whining day in and day out about media coverage and throwing tantrums like a 2 year old, “I’m right! I’m right!! I’m right!!!” Give me a break! No one wants to deal with you. Get over it. I’m tired of hearing about the surge. This is how Iraq works…they’ve been at war since the 1980s. Sometimes they fight, sometimes they don’t. We can’t do anything about it, unless we intend to live there. Period. We are Americans and don’t need to stay there indefinetly. We (our troops) are not Iraqis. It seems like McCain has a listening problem. How many times do you have to be asked to leave? In a place like Iraq, there’s no such thing as “winning” a war. It’s not like WWII. He doesn’t understand that. Obama needs to be on the world stage with people his own age that actually are willing to work with him. Medvedev or Russia is 42, Sarkozy of France 52, King Abdullah of Jordan 46…Pass the dam* torch already!!!!! We’ve already had George Bush, we don’t need McSame. He’s just standing on stage and in his town hall meetings shouting about how he can win wars…what else can he do? The economy’s in the tank. He’s only for rich people. He doesn’t have a healthcare plan, it will be what it is now under Bush. He wants to tamper and mess up social security. He’s not going to help the poor and middle class (also known as the soon to be poor class if McCain gets elected), and he’d like to keep all that money we could use at home and possibly Afghanistan just going in one direction. He’s full of crap. And he does care about being elected as president, or he wouldn’t be standing out there on those stages trying to get support. He wouldn’t be riding around on a bus from state to state, etc. Don’t lie to me McCain, but too late, you already did! If he was so great, he’s been around 30 darn years, why hasn’t he done anything he claims he can do now? Because this is an election year, that’s why. I do not support McSame/McCan’t/McBush/Bush III/Bush Lite/McFossil and his willingness to keep things the way they are now. NO NO NO!!!!!!!!! And this surge business…they’re all walking around surrounded by military people. If the cameras weren’t there, the guards, the guns, the helicopters, the secret service, then I’d say we have something, but no dice! I’m not all about Iraq, but I am all about America. I want to use some of that 10 billion dollars per month over here. We went into Iraq for oil…remember all those protestors with their signs “No blood for oil”? Well, we didn’t even get that, but we did get higher gas prices! Thanks McSame!!!

After Obama’s whirlwind overseas trip … he said:
“In terms of me governing, being an effective president, that that trip was helpful, because I think I’ve established relationships and a certain bond of trust with key leaders around the world who have taken measure of my positions and how I operate and I think can come away with some confidence that this is somebody I can deal with.”
And … here is what he actually did on his trip … you decide if these 9 days of photo ops were enough to establish Obama as a trusted world leader …
