McCain’s Temper Tantrum Tawdriness

FROM GUEST-BLOGGER RICK KLEIN, from ABC’s The Note.

Making the rounds in political circles today — in addition to the shake-up inside the McCain campaign — is an account in the Biloxi Sun-Herald where Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., says he witnessed a “physical confrontation” between Sen. John McCain and a Sandinista during a diplomatic mission in 1987.

This is how Cochran described the incident (21 years later — a point worth keeping in mind):

“McCain was down at the end of the table and we were talking to the head of the guerilla group here at this end of the table and I don’t know what attracted my attention," Cochran told the Sun-Herald.

"But I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever.”

“I don’t know what he was telling him but I thought, good grief, everybody around here has got guns and we were there on a diplomatic mission. I don’t know what had happened to provoke John but he obviously got mad at the guy and he just reached over there and snatched him."

McCain’s temper is one of those things we all “know” about in this campaign. And he’s had colorful, well-publicized run-ins with at least three fellow senators — Iowa’s Chuck Grassley, Texas’ John Cornyn, and New Mexico’s Pete Domenici — Republicans, all.

I can’t imagine an old, murkily recalled confrontation being a major factor in this campaign. Know also that Cochran, though he’s endorsed McCain, is no fan: He is the top Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee, and McCain — as a long-time, vocal critic of earmarks — has often been his biggest legislative enemy.

In January, Cochran explained his decision to endorse former governor Mitt Romney, R-Mass., thusly: “The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine,” Cochran told The Boston Globe’s Michael Kranish. “He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

McCain responded to Cochran’s recollection while in Colombia, per ABC’s Bret Hovell:

“That was 21 years ago. I think, that’s simply not true.”

“I made many many trips, and had many many meetings with the Sandinistas and other leaders of central America. There is no, nothing ever — I must say I did not admire the Sandinistas very much. . .”

is this supposed to turn me off of McCain? I love it!

Until you know what provoked McCain, you don’t know if it was worth the risk. It does sound like Cochran was being spineless. Men who are that afraid shouldn’t be in a room full of guerillas with guns and a guy who isn’t afraid of them.

Great, just great, hair trigger temper handling other leaders with hair trigger conflicts.
I can’t think of why this makes a man tough. We have one cowboy in office, what good did it do us?

People who can’t control their temper are dangerous to have in a position of power. I think of McCain with his trigger finger on the infamous “go” button on the red phone in the white house. Sends chills up and down my spine. Not good folks, not good. He’ll easily get us involved in another war for sure.

Men who go into diplomatic meetings should be in control of their temper…don’t ya think?
and Carrie…that’s just dumb that you like a guy for President because he may have lost his temper to a point of physical confrontation while in a diplomatic meeting…
I would hope the story isn’t true…
it’s one thing to be upset with some guy evil or not…but it’s another thing if you can’t control your freakin temper in a political meeting…
who is this guy Napoleon? or some other freaking bad story of a leader who thought it was okay to not act like one.
oy.
I hope these stories of McCain aren’t true.

This is a REPUBLICAN speaking.
And George W McCain wants to get his fingers on the nuclear button? And to hold the lives of millions of Americans in his hands? And have the power to decide whether American troops live or die by the thousands?
That’s just plain crazy.

Buttermilk McCain’s temper really doesn’t matter since he’s going to be blown out anyway in the General Election.
Suffice to say, he only has a few more years left in the Senate anyways. (2-4 Max) and then it’s off to shooing teenagers off of one of his wife’s foreclosed properties in Cali.

very scary! this is not the first recollection of a loss of control of temper by McCain. Add that to his ‘mistakes’ (confusing Somalia with Sudan yesterday; confusing Shia with Sunni, Iran with Iraq, etc.) – is this really someone we want to handle fragile international problems?

Posted by: bernadette | July 2, 2008, 3:29 pm 3:29 pm

Has McCain been named president of Columbia, yet? Isn’t that what he’s doing done there? We don’t need a “madman” like this to come back to the States.

The only person I have ever seen afraid of anything was Obama standing up to Wright, it took twenty years and a great deal public humiliation, and on the first round Obama failed. I still don’t think he has knocked Wright out.

No, it’s supposed to show that he is an erratic hothead who can’t control his temper and is completely wrong to be president.

Eileen from Maine you and some others are still swept with the idea that its all the presidents fault and going to be McCains fault. Stop and look at your in house congress!! They make the laws and can override Bush or McCain.
They wont because they have you under control and depending on them to pay your bills. Get up off the floor and fix it yourself instead of crying. And vote out the self interest politicians that have become lifers in the congress. The dems and Polosi are setting current policy not Buch or Mccain. Wake up

There have been a number of Republicans that have mentioned John McCain’s temper. Bob Dole is one of them. This incident was 21 years ago and John McCain has been known to be a Maverick and proved himself to be a very good Senator. I refuse to let this story keep me from recognizing all the great things he has done for this country.

McCain responded to Cochran’s recollection while in Colombia, per ABC’s Bret Hovell:
“That was 21 years ago. I think, that’s simply not true.”
McCain cannot remember what he said yesterday let alone what happened years ago…cannot tell Sunnis from Shites, cannot tell Somalia from Sudan (I can see why he graduated at the bottom of his class), gets Iraq and iran mixed up, and cannot control his temper. Great guy to have with his hand on the button – NOT!

“Men who go into diplomatic meetings should be in control of their temper…don’t ya think?”
Sure dl, and sometimes with some people grabbing them by the collar is as diplomatic as it should get. The Sandanistas weren’t exactly Washington bureaucrats.
I mean we don’t know what was said or if the action got the right reaction. Reagan was also known to take a nasty turn when confronted. LBJ was legendary for it.
This story is just another Spy vs Spy spin of the newscycle. Obama is looking floppy so it’t time to make McCain look droopy and so on and so forth through the looney tunes. Not a big deal.
I’m interested in what’s being said during this trek through our neighbors to the south. Remember McCain is a Senator and there are deals in the works. Whatsup?

To be fair, I think Rick left out some salient points from the Sun-Herald article:
“Cochran, who was in South Mississippi this week, said he supports McCain, who has turned into the best presidential candidate he could have imagined. Now McCain is levelheaded, Cochran said.
He believes McCain, who he described as courageous, hard-working and better equipped to handle the nation’s current challenges, is a better choice for president than Democrat Barack Obama…”

Posted by: N/A | July 2, 2008, 3:52 pm 3:52 pm

Thad Cochran is a moron. Why is he coming out with this now? He must be in Obama’s pocket. I do not care what happened twenty one years ago. The man is a war hero. I dought any of you Obama supporters could have gone through the pain and suffering McCain did in his years as a POW. Obama would have squealed like a baby.

Too funny. And McCain is now hiring operatives from the worst presidency in this country’s history. McCain – cannot keep facts straight without Liebermann at his elbow, has temper tantrums like a 2-year old (had another one on his plane yesterday), admits he knows nothing about the economy and denies saying it even though his admission is plastered all over the Internet, does not know world geography or just who is fighting who in Iraq, temper and the red button? No brainer – keep McCain away from that button.

Posted by: sandy | July 2, 2008, 3:59 pm 3:59 pm

Probably just as well that he doesn’t believe in talking to nations “we don’t like.”
I see that factotums Lieberman and Graham have accompanied him to Columbia. After McCain confused Somalia and Sudan yesterday, I suppose they had to go in case he confused Columbia and Costa Rica.

There are some serious flaws in this characterization and the fact that so many people feel they can make a judgement from the limited information in this article is sad. We don’t know who he snapped at, we don’t know why, and we don’t know what the result was. We only know that this account is supposed to make us believe it was inappropriate and its bad to have a temper. Hmmm… Anyone ever heard of Teddy Roosevelt? Infamous temper, that when applied appropriately did amazing things. Most of the people who are afraid of McCain’s temper have been on the wrong end of it for good reason. What it should tell you is that he is passionate about his beliefs and doing the right thing on America’s behalf. Until I see a full accounting of one of these incidents, I would consider it quite healthy that certain people in this world be afraid of our President’s temper. Russians were scared to death of Reagan, because he was capable of anything. Just ask Libya. You don’t get what you want in this world by appearing weak in the face of adversity.

dl – I am stating facts. The Senate bill he has coming up is a Global wealth re-distribution. $850B (as in Billion)of your TAX dollars will be sent to other countries that have a high poverty level. Sounds good? Not when I am struggling paycheck to paycheck and not when we have not solved our own poverty problems in this country. Not to mention Gas prices. His priorities are not in our best interest as a country. Plus he has very little experience. It would ne like promoting a Lieutenant to Army Chief of Staff overnight. It would be a disaster.

Its also extremely biased how the media continues to bring up trivial issues such as this when they seem to forget about Obama’s associations with:
Bill Ayers – bombed nyc polic dept., u.s. capitol and pentagon. They had dinner parties together
toni rezko – purchasing adjacent lots with rezko on same day, while obama paying less than asking price, this guy helped raise obama millions and just got convicted of 16 counts

Jake, thanks for carrying Sen. McCain’s water on this story, but I think you’re incorrect about something.
I think this is one of those definitive moments in politics.
It’s one thing if the events recounted by Sen. Cochran happened. People lose their temper sometimes. It happens.
However, if Sen. McCain is stating that the event SIMPLY DID NOT HAPPEN, and it is proven to have happened, then he is UNFIT TO BE PRESIDENT and should be an immediate disqualification.
These politicians NEVER LEARN. It’s not the original event, but rather, the LIE that ultimately dooms them. I don’t know why they simply cannot tell the truth.
Now there’s some maverick straight-talk.

If Ford and GM go bankrupt the domino effect will be horrfic.

What America desperatedly need now as potus is an intellegent leader, other people centred ( just as Jesus Christ), respected by not only millions of Americans but billions of others. No-one should argue with this because it is a fact.

The Sandinistas were Marxists and anti American in their mien and political focus. Nicaragua better off for their revolution? You might want to ask someone in their 50′s or 60′s who knew life before and after the “revolution.” I personally have a hard time actually visualizing John McCain physically being able to achieve this, but who am I to call his critic a liar? hmmmmmm.

Posted by: beebop | July 2, 2008, 4:37 pm 4:37 pm

Jeff C.
But in the piece McCain doesn’t exactly say it didn’t happen….
“I made many many trips, and had many many meetings with the Sandinistas and other leaders of central America. There is no, nothing ever — I must say I did not admire the Sandinistas very much. . .”
Guess we will need to see or hear the tape to see how the denial was stated.

Uh – the guy doesn’t know what was said? Doesn’t know why McCain reacted in that manner? Didn’t bother to ever ask McCain about it? Not even within the last 21 years?
That ought a propel his opponent right into the White House with all that glorious experience he has running – his mouth.

Economy fell into the toilet two years ago – living on a parallel planet are you? Democrats had a 1 vote edge in the Senate – not fillibuster proof or enough to override a veto. Bush/Cheney -oil men – Cheney meets with heads of oil companies to determine this country’s energy policy, Republicans block legislation Democrats tried to get through, McCain vehemently opposes GI bill and did not even show up to vote on the bill and then TAKES CREDIT for its passage supported by Bush’s rhetoric when Bush signed the bill, McCain did not support torture, now he does…. no attacks since 9/11? – do not hold your breath – it is just a matter of time….and the economy was already in the toilet before the last election cycle

Come on people…get real. And use your brain if you have one. I don’t know what Mr. Cochran’s motive or agenda is here, but if what he says is true, it would have been all over the international news – “U.S. Senator Assaults Ortega Aid”. You can bet the Sandinistas would have had a field day with that. And Bob Dole would have seen to it that Mr. McCain was on the next flight to anywhere out of Nicaragua. It never happened. There may have been heated words and both men may have been out of their chairs, but there is no way John McCain yanked the other guy up by his shirt.

Did you read that article
gross talks about obama…because he assumes he will be the next president…
he (along with most economists) have said that mcCain has the SAME problems.
but Obama won them over by not trying to use gimmicks.
both candidates are going to be hard pressed and many do not want a raise in taxes…but they also know what a larger deficit to China means…not only for security but in a global market and competitiona nd negotiation with them in the future.
That article is asking obama to watch where he walks because there is no point in talking to McCain…
he won’t be President.

Sandy – Not one party can be blamed for this. It is partisanship that has caused all of this. Both sides are to blame.
Arent you people sick and tired of the partisan politics in washington? They are not looking out for the countries well being, they are looking out for thier own party and getting re-elected. This has not been about the people for a long time.
McCain and Lieberman have been the Mavericks of thier party. They actually want to get things done. They are not partisan to the extreem like many Republican and Democrats are. They are not afraid to cross the aisle or see things differently than thier party.
They are leaders not followers.
The Jr Senator from Illinois cannot say the same. he is a Liberal Democrat that will tax and spend us to poverty.

we absolutely should be drilling here…
why doesn’t the oil companies drill where they have opportunity already…
adn don’t say there is no oil there…that is a lie.
The oil companies know that GW Bush is leaving this will be there last chance to get a hold of that oil and change federal law so they can go after the most lucrative places for oil.
But most of all
WE HAVE TO GET OFF OF OIL in every way we can.
period
what happens when in 30 to 50 years we may run out and we have not been even close to creating airplanes and energy sources that can run without oil?
this is a resource we have been using for a hundred years and have already tapped out in some countries…
and that was us using it really now multiply that usage by 25…
how long do you think that will last if we just keep opening more places and more places…
if 4$ is our threshold to balance against all the bad stuff that seems to be showing warning signs with our environment and our planet …then we are doomed.
not to mention all out global war AND terrorism in 15 years over the stuff.
yes we drill but we drill where it is available… you know the millions of acres they already own…and they salivate at the shorelines while they make huge profits.
as it is 2/3 to 3/4 of our supply does not come from overseas… and we aren’t using what we already have available because they say it isn’t cost effective
this is the same companies and CEO’s making profit hand over fist with thears of Cheney and Mccain (thank you Mr. Black)

Sandy:
Please remember that FDR had assistance with policy and direction during his stint as Commander in Chief during WWII from strong foreign leaders of the Allied countries.
In our current war on terror and Operation Iraqi Freedom, most of our allies have either withdrawn their support completely from the effort, or have greatly reduced their troop support during the last five years.
Simply put, there are no Winston Churchills around this time to assist a President with no military background in being our Commander in Chief.

We are heading to economic chaos and no matter who wins we will all be hurting very soon. One of the many reasons I am not supporting Obama was the Global wealth re-distribution. With what we have coming up we can ill afford to send $850B of our tax dollars to foreign countries. We are going to have record unemployment and record taxation if Obama gets elected.

Lets talk about at least current time, within say 5-7 years. I think most of us has something similar in their background they would rather forget.
Bottom line is, you can go back further on McCain than Obama, so what! Obama changes his mind every other day on issues and you want to drag McCain up on something from 21 YEARS AGO!

McCain’s action shows not that he has guts, but rather that he lacks self control during confrontations. Lack of such control makes for bad decisions under pressure. Perhaps that’s why he never made it too far up the command ladder in the Navy, but we will never know for sure because McCain has released only a small fraction of his military records. In any event, McCain’s chronic inability to control his temper strongly militates against choosing him to succeed Cowboy George.

Steve, the Viet Cong (aka, People’s Liberation Armed Forces or VC) were the guerilla communists in the South organized by the North Vietnamese (some being former Vietminh). The North Vietnamese held McCain in Hanoi (North VietNam – Hoa Lo Prison).
BTW: you are repeating one of the more infamous fibs attributed to the non-official sources out of the Bush campaign in 2000. It’s weird when Democrats do that particularly in a week when Obama is being charged as the Real Bush III.

Dear Sandy,
No on the first point – yes on the second.
Absolutley calling that into question because it is relavant! (I’m not talking about IVY league kind of stuff. I’m talking about the kind of education one can get by reading the A section of the paper once a month or paying bills. *I’m talking about Econ 101. Price/Quantity. Supply and Demand. Basic Laws of economics that describe human behavior and these laws will not change not for you and not for me. *For example – gas prices are this high because the supply of oil is not there. There is no other answer. Speculators do bid up the price because Supply is outstripped by Demand. They will bid it down when the Supply outstrips Demand, kind of like that. *This is not even difficult to understand. It’s not left or right. It’s not D or R. *If only you Liberals would just go back to your community colleges and take an Economics 101 course – this country would be better off. *Sandy – if you hang around long enough – I’ll review tax policy with you.

I hated the Iraq war the day it started. I did support the Afghan war.
I am a moderate tree hugger. I believe Gore is about 60% right on the environment and I also believe we should conserve and learn to be better to our world. But I also believe we should prosper as a country. We shoudl defend ourselves from terror and we should have the strongest military in the world. I am even OK with the Immigration guest worker program. Heck I even think a woman should have the right to choose.

all because they don’t want their record profits to be hurt.

if this is what forces us to open our shores when it should be forcing us to say to the oil companies… go get the oil that is in the locations we already approved or we are going to tax you the windfall priofits tax and gicve it to the car companies and heating companies to subsidize their R&D on other resources.

McCain has NO fresh ideas. My father-in-law has a temper when he’s faced with a challenge he can’t mentally work through. It comes with age. McCain has plenty of age. The problem comes in when he’s faced with a mental challenge. Who would really be running a McCain administration? That is the question. You can be sure it won’t be John McCain.

Posted by: Melanie | July 2, 2008, 5:27 pm 5:27 pm

The argument that McCain didn’t grab the Sandinista guy because of his physical limitations falls short in that 1) McCain’s equivocal half denial, half memory lapse with a sprinkle of “yeah I hated those little buggers” is as good as saying “I did it–so?”, and most importantly 2) no one else interceding only shows that the others in the room when confronted with this conflict situation correctly and maturely realized that they should not turn the situation into a hockey brawl but let McCain calm down and release the Sandanista guy, which he ultimately did.

then you obviously have not read both their policies…
I sat in rooms and watched them answer…
McCain did play himself off as a secdond fiddle awareness on the economy all of last year…and focused on the importance of Iraq and security..(which he was totally wrong on)
that was when he was stuck between conservatives and independents…
but the three times I saw him speak and take questions his focus was evil Iran…and how dems pulling out would make us less safe…
He is a hawk …who thinks way down the priority list on cost of lives and treasure in his stance on going to war.
He may know what it is like to be a prisonerof war but it has not made him any less aggressive in his stance and rhetoric about going to war and refacing the middle east.
and when the media wasn’t covering him early on… he couldn’t answer fiscal questions very well at all.
To not change taxes and continue on a war…and be looking at going to war with iran (and he is go compare his speeches and messages to AIPAC before Iraq and the one he just gave about Iran) …on China’s dime.
all the while our failing infrastructure will crush our economy more than anything outside of the oil crisis…
this guy is bad for America.
like him or not he is bad for America.

Posted by: dl | July 2, 2008, 5:33 pm 5:33 pm

“…that’s why he never made it too far up the command ladder in the Navy”
Let’s keep the facts up front.
McCain was up for Rear Admiral at the time he retired. He knew he would never be a full Admiral because he had never had a major command at sea. Being a POW for five and half years then spending two undergoing rehabilitation is limiting that way. He did take command of a below average training squadron and brought them up to an award for merit. He retired as a Captain (which is a much higher position than that rank in other services). He has seventeen military awards and decorations including the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star and Navy Commendation Medal.
The fast track in the US Navy is from the submarine commands, not the aviation commands.

len–I don’t know whether McCain wasdisadvantagedby not commanding asub, but I do believe his claims that he was in bona fide contention for a star at the time he left the Navy are overstated:
This story is highly improbable for several reasons, not least of all because John McCain himself has always told a very different story about his stalled naval career. For example, on page 9 of his memoir Worth The Fighting For, McCain writes:
“Several months before my father died, I informed him that I was leaving the navy. I am sure he had already gotten word of my decision from friends in the Pentagon. I had been summoned to see the CNO, Admiral Heyward, who told me that I was making a mistake…. His attempt to dissuade me encouraged me to believe that I might have made admiral had I had been in the navy, a prospect that remained an open question in my mind…. Some of my navy friends believed I could still earn my star; others doubted it…. When I told my father of my intention, he did not remonstrate with me…. But I knew him well enough to know that he was disappointed. For when I left him that day, alone in his study, I took with me his hope that I might someday become the first son and grandson of four-star admirals to achieve the same distinction. That aspiration was well beyond my reach by the time I made my decision….”
McCain’s father died on March 22, 1981. McCain retired from the Navy within a week. He wrote about his retirement soon thereafter. McCain never mentioned the alleged offer of an admiralship by Lehman in any of his books, nor in the numerous interviews McCain gave during his first run for the presidency in 1999-2000.
Now he tells a different story. I am inclined to believe the first version.

Obama is not saying what everyone wants to hear…obviously.
His fiscal plan is complicated I admit that…but that is what we need …
his financial stress on this country is focusing on the fact that much our economy is driven by the retail of the middle and lower classes not trickle down economics.
We are in a situation where we have not much options… and one sends us into worse territory with the world in general…and may cause a larger deficit…because his busget ignores things like infrastructure, ballooning healthcare (causing social security to exponentially get worse), the fact that he ginores the financial stress in his estimates of a large war with Iran and the fact that their is a good chance we are going to have to go back into afghanistan and maybe pakistan to fix the problems that we have been ignoring…
and that with NAFTA the job outlook isn’t lookin g better…
and the fact that Obama inherently because of how the world views him is more likely to have the support of our allies in getting out…where McCain having such similarity to Bush emboldens people like Russia and Iran and China to flip us off…becaus ethey know how we are being viewed in other countries and those countries’ leaders are elected by the people.
and ignoring that the educationdeficit with our students and other counteries continues to grow… all the while they send their students to our universities to return to build business back their now that they have such a growing global economy.
There are so many things wrong with McCain’s fiscal plan …it’s impossible to put them in one post.

Republicans who speak of cutting spending have proven themselves to be hypocrits. Do as I say, not as I do. DL,
Let’s get back to basics.
Profit: It’s a thing that motivates people to do or not do something.
I can think of no other reason why a group of people (ie employees at Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Joe for Oil) would want to go to a place that’s 70 degrees below zero like Alaska -ANWR or 200 miles off of our coast – just to dig a hole in the ground. There must be something other than the thrill of digging a hole in the ground. Please, please tell me this is not an IQ issue. That you understand why someone would want to make a profit. *Finally – if making so much money is so evil why do Liberals have so much: Kennedy, Pelosi, Kohl, Feinstein. Hell – Obama.

“Mccain was never up for admrial and even if he was the Navy doesn’t report those things.”
Rear Admiral. Big diff. And yes they do when an officer is discussing retirement.
“HE graduated at the bottom of his class”
Yes he did from one of the hardest schools in the nation, but even he admits he was a party animal then. On the other hand, Robert E. Lee was at the top of his and still lost the war against the northern aggression. ;-)
“He got shot down 3 times… Good judgment?”
Three? One shoot down.
I’m not sure I’m qualified to say what about that is ‘good judgment’ vs good shooting. I know I wouldn’t have been able to make one flight. If you feel qualified to cast stones, have at. But remember he was flying his 23rd mission three months after surviving the Forestal fire and being wounded getting another pilot off the deck when a bomb exploded near them.
You do know its rather classless to say those sorts of things, yes? It won’t raise your candidate up to tear down a veteran’s record.

And how the hell can we believe exactly what this guy is saying anyways, I mean it happened 21 years ago. People’s brains forget a lot in 21 years. My guess is he’s exaggerating some of this. Is this man an Obambi supporter??

Posted by: Ryan | July 2, 2008, 5:57 pm 5:57 pm

21 years ago. Exactly what I thought. Bring up 21-25 years ago stuff. Obama has been in the US CONGRESS 143 days so he wont have anything on his because he has ZERO experience. Interns have more experience than he does.

You did not take economics. The middle businesses get thier loans from investment bankers. i.e the stinking rich. A great example of that is the .com boom. the money did not come from the middle to support that sector. it came from investment bankers. If that is what you think Obama premise is for econonomics you are truely lost. You super tax the investment people and they will take thier money offshore and invest it somewhere else…. like China.

yes that profit I would call evil when the oil companies have now pushed (thank you Charlie Black mr. oil lobbyist) our leaders into saying that whether we are destroying our earth…whether or not global warmign will destroy us further…
it is more important they gain a greater profit and enormous gains …rather than them take the hit because they want to have a sel;ection that is bigger than what they already have…
the oil companies are doing what they did with the Iraq war…
Just as they used 9/11 to gain entrance to fool us into Iraq…
they are now using 4$ gas to fool us into letting them have access to smaller state officials to lobby states with their billions to allow them access to any place along the coast.
so yeah… they are putting their (record) profits ahead of global warming, America’s need to get off oil…ahead of American’s giving up food this winter because they can’t afford to heat their homes.
Oil is running out…but they have access to lots of oil…it’s just not as lucrative of locations…
so this idea that the markets will react to some false notion that we are discovering new oil because we haven’t discovered it in the other places …is false.

I remember a story of him publically humiliating the head of the Arizona young Republicans because the kid did not make the podium lower. McCain looked short when he stood behind it. So he screamed and yelled at the kid in the middle of the lobby.
So classy and courageous, berating a kid that looks up to you.
SO inspiring.

I think it’s a great story, but it was 21 years ago, so not very relevant. Generally, I love tough guys and McCain is to be admired, but we don’t need another cowboy in office. Hopefully, he’s simmered down some.

Posted by: hey Scoob | July 2, 2008, 6:12 pm 6:12 pm

To clarify…
The fire was on the USS Oriskany. Bad day, and seemingly one of the lucky days in a life that – for a while – was decidedly unlucky.
The “shoot downs” the poster is referring to is actually wrong. McCain crashed four planes, it would seem, in peacetime. That seems to me bad luck, and it does not matter to me at all in determining his readiness for POTUS.
Do you mean to say you agree that John Kerry should not have been attacked by the Swift Boat Vets? Bud Day, the leader of that vile group, is now emplyed by McCain to smear Wes Clark.
I have said that I admire McCain’s conduct as a POW. But what I admired more – and most – were his efforts in normalizing relations with Vietnam later in life.
That was arguably more courageous, and an act of strength on his part – one not seen often in a world where people hold grudges.
With McCain’s flip-flopping all over the place now to suit public opinion polls, I am not sure that the new version would have gone and undertaken that tough diplomatic assignment. And that is disappointing.

maybe we should take away the roads you drive on too…
or the defense and military that protects you…do you only want to buy into that…
Lack of Healthcare is killing all of us…
it’s killing your social security
it’s killing your premiums because people are getting and not paying.
Obama is looking to try and get universal by focusing on cost.
Healthcare balance in this country should eventually be like infrastructure and defense. If you would like out of those systems let us know.

DL,
That last post of mine should have been aimed at Mcdaddy. Sorry.
“Investment Bankers” – in an article critical of Investment Bankers is typically code for “I don’t like a certain group in this country.”

2008 Voter…
I am a liberal that wants states rights for a lot of things, and healthcare is #1 on my list. This is not a right v left issue – I actually think that Romney has it right. We cannot continue to allow people to remain uninsured, show up at the ER – and then have you and me pick up their tab in the form of higher premiums.
Because THAT is socialized medicine! You and me paying for someone else.

Posted by: Moochie | July 2, 2008, 6:24 pm 6:24 pm

DL,
What about the challenge?
I’ll repeat: Can 40M citizens who believe so strongly in nationalizing Healthcare – come together and start their own Healthcare system?
I mean 40m people – all throwing money into a collective pot. Come on. Do it. Do it. Start your own national healthcare system. Show us how it’s done.

Posted by: 2008voter | July 2, 2008, 6:26 pm 6:26 pm

2008 Voter…
As the current system does not act on free market principles is it impossible to just “start it”. Until the old system comes down.
Again, this needs to be done on the state level. Why am I to be held back because MS and AR and OK can’t get their act together? On healthcare? On education (Hatch in UT)? On environmental standards (Arnold in CA)?
But every time states try to buck the system and implement their own standards the Feds slap them down. The GOP favors states rights when it is not in power, and denies them when it is.
You cannot have it both ways.

And obama didn’t steal anything he beat her fair and square!

Posted by: Joe | July 2, 2008, 6:37 pm 6:37 pm

Len,
Thanks for the info. He is very unlucky, because it seems that he was on the Oriskany (with the VA-163 Saints) when a fire there killed 44 a year before.
Interesting fact – same thing apparently caused both, use of 1,000 lb bombs from WWII that were deemed unsafe to use in WWII.
Seems like a number of far-right blogs blamed McCain for the incident in the runup to the 2000 GOP primary, but there is nothing to back that up. More likely using 30 year old F-Grade bombs on jet planes was just a bad idea. Gee, who would have thunk that?

Posted by: Moochie | July 2, 2008, 6:57 pm 6:57 pm

Tim,
I see you are back. I reiterate that all that so called “experience” with Busn/Cheney/McBush has gotten us into the dire straits we find ourselves in today. These people have so much experience, that we as a people should not be suffering the repercussions of their faulty decision making. This country and its citizens should be soaring and prospering in every aspect but as you can see, that is not the case with”experience”. I will take Obama who is a smart visionary, who is a brilliant stategist and who has the wherewithal to inspire people, and who is willing to take brave steps of “Change” to being this country back to “Honor”.

Posted by: pdyoung | July 2, 2008, 7:02 pm 7:02 pm

Some on this forum have been criticized for bringing up issues (McCains past temper fits) that go back as far as 20-21 years. I guess you can’t have it both ways can you? You McCain supporters remind us several times a day of McCains POW status and what a hero he was. Let’s see, that happened 40 plus years ago but you are willing to share that story over and over and over. But the oppositon doesn’t dare bring up anything that may tarnish his image regardless of when it happened. That’s hypocritical, but what do you expect from the McCain campaign?

Posted by: Drew Hoffman | July 2, 2008, 8:19 pm 8:19 pm

Obama is the only one who will do. If you think bottom yellow teeth when talking McCain is the one the country needs you are not a Democrat worthy to be called a Democrat. Our nation is in the hands of old republicans who are owned by and do the bidding for corporations. This is what will continue with McCain. More old republicans screwing up everything they can for Americans while they enrich corporate interests.

Posted by: Vicki | July 2, 2008, 9:05 pm 9:05 pm

Jim Rod You really have not been paying attention if you think Democrats could do anything with Bush and his veto. Then there was the republican filibuster that required 60 votes when there was a 49 to 50 repubs to demos. So the republicans had it 100% until 2006. Since then they have just made sure the Democrats could get nothing done. That is how wonderful republicans have been as Bush’s rubberstampers.

Posted by: rummy | July 2, 2008, 9:37 pm 9:37 pm

This is funny! The “hero” at his best:
When asked by the National Journal in 2003, “Do you think that military service inherently makes somebody better equipped to be commander-in-chief?” this politician answered, “Absolutely not. History shows that some of our greatest leaders have had little or no military experience. … I have advised that I’d be very careful about how much you talk about that, because you don’t want it to sound self-serving.” The person who said that was John McCain, and the presidential candidate he was talking about was John Kerry.

“Wesley Clark is the true American – and military service:
Clark has commanding experience – McCain “commanded” a squadron – Clark holds his ground, McCain throws a temper-tantrum. No contest.
Posted by: sandy | Jul 2, 2008 4:21:06 PM”
——-
Clark does have a lot of military experience.
McCain has experience of decades in the senate. He is the ranking member of a variety of committees. He has been on the senate armed services committee for 21 years. McCain’s extensive experience in elected office is what qualifies him to be president. His acceptance of years of torture in exchange for nothing more than honor speaks to his character. His returning from that hell-hole with determination and grit, rising to high public office, is a testimony to his resilience when other men were destroyed by their trauma in Vietnam. His leadership role in securing humanitarian aid for Vietnam in ensuing years after they tortured him for 5 1/2 years is testimony to his heart.
Clark’s recent comment about McCain – that getting shot down from a fighter plane does not qualify one to be president – belittles McCain’s heroic show of dignity and character in his POW years. It mocks his decades in the senate with long track record of bipartisanship and battle against government waste. And it is a violation of the honor of a fellow soldier, which Clark as a general should be more aware of than most. Mr. Clark lost a great deal of my respect when he made that statement. I was hoping that he just mis-spoke, but lo and behold he expounds further on this issue. It is a sad day indeed when former senior military officials become so blinded by partisanship and greed for political gain that they abandon the core courtesy of not disparaging another soldier’s honorable conduct.

hmmm… so it seems that a republican who hates McCain has said that 21 years ago, McCain lost his temper and grabbed a Sandinista. Whoop-de-do. Somewhere around that time Barack Obama was snorting cocaine. A couple of months ago, Hillary Clinton was saying that Barack Obama was too inexperienced to be president.
I care about things done recently. Like pledging to aggressively persue public funded election, where no influence peddling can occur because the “donors” are anonymous taxpayers, and then backing out of it when it became politically convenient. (and then claiming that by doing so, he was reforming the system! I’m sorry, how it that reforming the system, it is undermining a system that has been fair and impartial). Statements like that worked well to get you all those early primary victories, but were easily discarded once the principles they embody became politically inconvenient. Newsflash to Barack Obama – most democrats wait until AFTER they are elected to begin breaking their election promises.
Trashing a pastor and adviser of 20 years when it became politically advantageous to do so. Mr. Obama stated that it was Wright’s observation that Obama was saying what he had to to get elected, but did not believe those things, that was most appalling to him.
Wright: God Damn America! US of KKK!
Obama: I could never reject him, he’s like an uncle…
Wright: Barack’s just saying things he doesn’t really believe to get elected….
Obama: I reject and repudiate him! Back, Spawn of Satan!
I want to know what a “typical white person” is. His statement that they are afraid of blacks indicated his belief that whites are intrinsically racist. In his new era do we refer to each other as “typical black people” and “typical white people?”
I want to know why he says he will only raise taxes on those over $250k income, but will levy a 6% payroll FICA tax on anyone making over $100k. I want to know if he is planning on letting the ’01 and ’03 tax reductions, which are helping me keep my finances afloat, expire. I want to know if he is going to screw my small business by raising corporate income tax. Will he increase capital gains tax as he has promised, this hitting people who are retiring and cashing out their retirement bonds and stocks? What OTHER taxes that he has neglected to mention does he have in store? After all, he was going to “aggressively pursue” public financing, until he decided to change his mind. If he cannot even keep his election promises until the election itself, how do you expect him to keep promises about taxes? Can you afford to operate on 10% less money each year than you get today? Because unless your “income” is from the welfare dole, that’s probably a best-case scenario in an Obama presidency.

I wrote this elsewhere but I think it applies as it shows McCain having COMS (Cranky Old Man Syndrome). People with grandparents and great-grandparents know what I’m talking about. We love em’ but when symptoms of COMS shows up we just have a slight urge to put them on plane to torment a rival relative.
“Oh my goodness. People are seriously thinking about electing a guy in his 70s to be the President. I love old people, and the more power to them if they can keep it up when young rabble-rousers. But seriously someone brought up an honest point. If someone 74 (who looks 74- like someone took a paper bag and put it on their face and spray painted it) was going to give you laser eye surgery , would you stop and question maybe if his/or her age could be a hindrance for the success of the operation? I think ageism is not a good thing but people at a certain age shouldn’t be trying to do something that could be and is physically and mentally exhaustive. And don’t tell me age has nothing to do with things, because when someone over 70 cuts you off on the road, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Like I said I love old people but they can (old men in particular) be quite cranky and senile. Unless McCain is receiving organ transplants from a 20 yr. old, taking super-vitamins, exercising everyday, and doing crossword puzzles (take note my gray haired friends- its exercise for the mind), there is nothing that you can say to persuade me that he is not too old for the job of running the country. Did I mention I love senior citizens and sometimes I read AARP?
Take note McCain campaign: I will definitely change my tune if they show very recent clips of McCain doing bench presses, drinking carrot juice smoothies, and working on a Sodoku puzzle.”

McCain had been so brutalized during has P.O.W. captivity that he has since been unable to lift his arms above his head, and cannot put on a jacket by himself.
Yet we’re expected to believe he, a 51 year old disabled man, was able to manhandle someone else in the room before anyone else could intercede?

LR-Just so you and everyone else can understand something. Obama has said he will raise taxes on the rich and use those taxes to fund some of his give away programs, more welfare, solicilized medcail care etc. Well lets look at something, first the rich have money and a team of people to help them minimize taxes so here is what will happen. When the taxes are raised as he says on capital gains, the rich will move their money to something like a muni bonds or annuities where they do not have to pay taxes or pay very minimal taxes. Then if they need money they will just use the bonds or annuities to obtain a loan (no taxes on loans right) and wait until better tax programs are in place. Remember most rich do not have a job that they get a W-2 on they run business and investments. They are the ones that creat the jobs, and with no investments no more jobs plan and simple. So guess who winds up paying for Obama’s give away programs to those who do not want to work just want to go get their hand out cause they think those who do work owe them a living. You got it you who are working day in day out and drawing a pay check. It won’t be the rich cause they will protect their money as they should. If you look back at all the pasted tax reductions you will see that they always enabled growth in the jobs market and the investment market and that is what we have to have. If we start down Obama’s road then before long we will be being taxed at 50-60% or more just to support his give away plans. Take a look at our neighorbs to the north or the UK and you will see 50 t0 65% taxes. Good luck and look for ways to protect what money you do have there are investments out there that you can put you money in and not have to pay taxes on it right away and that is what you need to do if you have any spare money at all.

If you point out that Mr. Klein finds a way to defend everything bad said about McCain or attack anything good about Obama, your post is deleted faster than John McCain can lose his temper or change his position on just about everything.

Posted by: Ricky | July 3, 2008, 3:17 pm 3:17 pm

I owe Mr. Klein an apology. He actually did cover McCain’s interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America. Unfortunately he never mentioned that McCain lied to Roberts when she quoted him saying he was not an expert on the economy. He denied ever saying it. It was the same lie he made to the late Tim Russert during a Presidential debate. Russert later confronted him with it on Meet the Press. Lie once on TV, get caught by NBC. Lie again to ABC, get ignored.

Posted by: Ricky | July 3, 2008, 3:29 pm 3:29 pm

Why is the dust-up news? Thad Cochoran said McCain did it. McCain says he didn’t.
Nobody in the media has bothered to ask any of the Sandinistas if it happened. After all Daniel Ortega is now the president of Nicaragua? He can be contacted. How about asking Adolfo Calero?
Also remember that McCain may not be physically capable of lifting anyone up by the collar. That’s result of broken limbs he sustained during torture as a prisoner of war.
McCain is quite capable of losing his temper or saying something that would bring someone out of their chair.
Just remember that both the Sandinistas and Contras were responsible for killing thousands of innocent civilians.
People like that only understand tough talk and action.
If Obama talks to the likes of the Sandinistas, he’d better talk tough too.
