More U.S. Troops in Afghanistan?

ABC News’ Jonathan Karl reports: Two senior defense officials tell ABC News that more troops are expected to be directed to Afghanistan in the coming weeks to support what one official called "near-term ’08 operations."

How many additional troops?  Officials say it will be one or two battalions (there are about 750 troops in a battalion) and possibly more.

The troops in question include units to provide route clearance, helicopter airlift, bomb disposal, and other support.

The request for additional troops comes from CENTCOM and has not been approved yet by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, although the officials expect the request will be soon be approved.

The specific units to be diverted to Afghanistan are still to be identified.  Most of these troops are expected to come from units now deployed elsewhere in the world.  The Joint Staff has ordered the other regional commanders (Pacific Command, SOUTHCOM, etc.) to identify units that could be spared for Afghanistan.   Some could possibly come from Iraq or elsewhere in CENTCOM.

This flow of more troops is separate, and in addition to, the three brigades (10,000) combat troops and trainers that commanders have previously said they need.  That larger influx of troops to Afghanistan likely won’t happen until after there are further drawdowns in Iraq.

Obama’08, actually were did you hear either Bush or McCain say they not support troops in Afghanistan? What makes you so sure the Obama will go against the military leaders. Speaks a great game to get himself elected.

It isn’t that Bush and McCain don’t know what they are doing, the case is they haven’t known all along or we would have been full strength in Afghanistan to start with.
Mis-guided dimwits.

We should have gone full force into
Afghanistan in the beginning. Won and
came home. But Bush lied and took ran
the country in fear and went to war with
Iraq for no reason but to let Bin Laden
and his tyrants get more powerful, now
our soldiers have to pay the price for
Bush’s idiots ways. Eight years of
a man who was in the lowest bottom of
his class. All he ever learned in life
is to LIE. McCain will be no better.
I can’t wait for Obama to beat the living daylights out of McCain on election day.
And or Americans to show Bush and McBush
that Americans are not stupid and we can’t be LIED to and made to feel SCARED
AND FEARFUL.
Shame of Bush and his Administration for
using our Military men and women for
his own gain. Our TROOPS deserve way
better than Bush and McCain.

It is the Taliban, and AlQueda in Afghanistan who are responsible for the deaths of 3000 Americans on September 11. The war in Afghanistan is the only war which ever should have been started, and fought by our great US soldier.
Instead of doing fighting the war in Afghanistan, and winning the war in Afghanistan against the terrorists, Geroge Bush, helped by the vote of John McCain went to war against Iraq knowing that they were doing it based on false information.
The war in Iraq has resulted in 4000 US soldiers being killed.
JOHN McCAIN HAS SAID THAT EVEN KNOWING THAT THE WAR IN IRAQ WAS STARTED ON FALSE INFORMATION, HE STILL WOULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!!!
SO JOHN McCAIN WOULD AGAIN SEND 4000 U.S SOLDIERS TO DIE IRAQ!!!
John McCain is a lunatic, the man has admitted that he would be willing to go to war on false information, and get thousands of our soldiers killed!!!!

We are fortunate that Bush stuck to his guns, despite brutal criticism. He ended up being right, and the Dems ended up being wrong.
If we had followed BO’s plan we whould have had another Vietnam already. Instead victory is in sight.

ksm–yes we are close to victory in a war we should have never fought wow so good—NOT!!!! if bush would have done what the democrats had wanted and what americans thought he was doing we would have had bin laden dead by now instead we just pissed off more and more radicals by invadeing iraq and now occupying iraq.

Posted by: tom | July 23, 2008, 7:34 pm 7:34 pm

All I have to say is Americans are not
safer than we were. Bush has let Bin
Laden and his tyrants build for seven
years and if you read and listen to
the news they are getting more powerful.
Bush has allowed AlQueda to get stronger and stronger. Seven years of of fighting
as war that had nothing to do with 9-11.
God help us all if we are attacked again
by them. We can all thank Bush!!!
Life means nothing to Bush, our soldiers
did not take an Oath to be Lied to
and used for Bush’s own selfish needs.
Bush is a sick human being!!!

KSM,
Do you ever see the show “Intervention?” Because you OBVIOUSLY have some type of addiction that is clouding your judgement.
After nearly 7 YEARS!! of complete chaos, you are talking about victory because of a few months of declining deaths.
This is how you define “victory”?

This proves that Senator Obama has been right from the very beginning. Iraq is a huge distraction that has prevented the United States from destroying the terrorist organization that carried out the 9/11 attacks. Now, Bush is openly admitting failure, but also failing to do anything to remedy the situation. History will regard the invasion of Iraq as the greatest strategic blunder ever committed by any President of the United States. Obama 08!!!

In about 100 days, this will all be overwith. Anyone who believes McBush will win the general election simply does not understand politics. I can’t wait to blog the day after Obama is elected. This country will be blessed to have Obama as it’s next president; someone competent enough to lead us out of this mess GW and the republicans have created. There is no need to attempt to rationalize with irrational republicans. They are willing to sacrifice the livelihood of their own children, grandchildren, neices, nephews, etc..for the sake of party loyalty and blind ignorance. If you can’t objectively see that Obama is the best of the two choices for President, you ought not be allowed to vote. Imagine what life was like almost 8-years ago…can you remember the good ole days? Now, fast forward….in every possible category, America is worse off. So, you want more? Vote McBush and he will finish what GW started.

Rodney I do understand that we need to be in Afghaniston, but what I am saying is Obama’s campaign for the last year is he was getting us out of war, so that 1. are men can come home and 2. We can stop spending all this money on the war, yet now he is overseas and saying we need to send more men into Afghaniston. But when McCain talks about these issues he seems to get mocked out all the time. Boy I can remember last Jan, Feb, Mar Obama standing so tall saying McCain wants to keep this war going, We need to get our boys home….. guess he is changing his mind….

Question: why are all of our bases in Afghanistan all along the pipeline. Why did we declare war against the Taliban after 911, when they helped us fight the northern alliance, who gave safe haven to bin Laden before 911? Could it be because they voted against the pipeline? Why did we then replace the Taliban with a regime headed by Hamid Karzai who was an executive for Unocal oil? Why has the opium/heroin trade gone up 100% since we replaced the Taliban? What IS the real “war on terror”, really about? Could it be less than bringing freedom and less security, and more about establishing a pipeline we can control and divert oil away from China and towards us while using the funds from the drug trade to subsidize “the war on terror”, i.e. the war on America and any other country who dares to be independent of the British/American/Israeli empire. Why was the “axis of evil “Iran, Iraq, and North Korea?” And why are we trying to destablize democracies in Venezuela after we did so in Pakistan. Why has to ouptut of oil from the middle east DECREASED since out invasion? Driving the price continually upward. I think some of you folks need to ask your representatives these questions, and FIRE THEM if they refuse to give you an answer…

bete, Obama hasn’t thought of that, yet. Don’t worry, whatever he thinks about that timetable will change when he gets back on US soil, might even change tomorrow. He so busy looking at the cameras, however, or playing basketball for the cameras. He just might not have the time.
Of course, troops will be in Afghanistan, maybe 100 years, maybe not, or permanent bases, maybe not. One never knows what will happen, does one? He must have a crystal ball, actually, and sees and knows everything. The Brandenburg Gate backdrop will make him look like the Prince who has come to save us and bring CHANGE!
Maybe he has 16 months slated for Afghanistan, too, you think? Now we know what that 3:00am ad really meant. We should be worried.

drjohn: he demonstrated good judgment by opposing the Iraq invasion on the grounds that we needed to completely destroy the al qaeda network in Afghanistan. He also caught heat last year by saying he would unilaterally and pre-emptively bomb camps in Pakistan if they posed a threat to the national security of the US. Many other candidates opposed this, and Obama was right. We need to start initiating larger and more effective offensive maneuvers against al qaeda and Taliban remnants in Afghanistan and Pakistan before they are strong enough to control the government of a country with nuclear weapons (Pakistan). He is also calling for 3 more brigades to be sent to Afghanistan, which is something we in the Army have been needing for 5 years to completely demolish the network and Taliban remnants. Bush has dragged his feet at every turn, and today he denied GENERALS who requested 10,000 additional troops their request. His administration flatly stated that ‘that is a problem for the next administration’. So, i guess that is what we’ll tell the troops fighting there now who need more help from additional numbers and will see casualties before January 20, 2009.

I am increasingly amused at the drones who have fallen for the Obama “mystique”. If you would bother to check his record (minimal as it is), his voting record is to the LEFT of the self-declared Socialist – Barney Frank of Vermont. What does this mean? It means Obama is a Marxist. McCain said it best, “My friends, if you want higher taxes and larger government bureaucracy, I am not your candidate.”
I can’t wait to read the liberal blogs when Obama finally stops the demagogue dialogue and actually starts telling us what he is going to do to “solve” America’s woes. First, you won’t believe the cost. Second, you won’t believe how much it will lower your paycheck. And third, you won’t believe the financial disaster it will create as these non-sustainable socialist entitlement programs start collapsing, one by one, as has happened throughout the history that Obama has ignored – at OUR peril.
Good luck with all of that.

i could go over the list of things that McCain has said wrong, but the list is to long. Just yesterday(?) he said that the surge was responsible for the Awakening! With out the surge the awakening never would have happenned. It was such a bad slip that this answer to a quesion ended up on the cutting room floor and they substituted another answer of his. Then today (?) he still says he got it right(Trying to cover his a** but admitting no slip) of the surge. That the Awakening was part of the Surge But did not the Awakening start before the white house started talking about the surge? Were the Sheiks (he calls the Shakes), mind readers? and already knew that the surge was going to happen before the president did? I could use a mind reader in my business!!!

Jeff Roe: Obama is not a “demigod”or “rock star”. There are alot of Obama supporters that are college educated. We don’t get fooled as easily. Yes, Obama is a good speaker. Alot better than McCain. But, McCain is not offering a good health care plan, his tax cuts are only for the wealthy and he wants to drill (which he was against before he was for) He talks about a gas tax holiday that is like offering a teaspoon of water to someone dying of thurst but holding it just out of reach. Sounds good, but no economist endorses it. Even a 5th grader could do the math and realize he was offering peanuts. Yes is also NOT for womens rights. he is the one I do not trust. I would rather have someone unkown with fresh ideas.

FOR ALL HILLARY PUMAS AND SORE LOSERS ON THIS BLOG…
I know that you are all here, some more vocal than others, most now in the disguise of McBush supporters now. For the life of me I can’t figure out what the problem is.
If you are over 65 then I get it, you are the typical dried up die hard Hillary supporter. Other than that there is no excuse for your constant bashing of Barack. He is a good guy and cares about womens issues, the country, the military and our standing as Americans in the world.
Hillary and the PUMA’s do not have 18 million supporters, that is just a lie… If you don’t believe it just go here and see.

It would be nice if you were all blogging for us, instead of pining for something that will never happen. Hillary probably won’t be VP either (because of Bill and other reasons), so it is time to move on and support the Democrat Party.
Just face the facts, do you think Hillary would have been been recieved on a trip overseas like Obama was this week? Probably not, but maybe. Regardless though everyone in the Dem party must face the fact that Obama is our nominee – that is a fact.
So come and help us blog against this idiot McSenile that will only continue the pain we are all feeling in the country now, Thanks!

Don’t give McCain too hard of a hard time. He is finally saying the right thing on Afghanistan – put more soldiers into the fight to beat down Al Queda and Bin Laden where they really exist.
He’s finally following the advise that Senator Obama who has been giving for 2 years.
It is funny, though, how McCain tried to one-up Obama. You know, Obama says to add 2 combat brigades, so McCain feels that he needs to add 3 brigades.
The question, John, is where do you plan to find those American combat soldiers, since you plan to tie our soldiers down in Iraq for 50 or 100 years? As this article says, the troops are not available to Afghanistan until we draw them down from Iraq.
And how does that all square with the plans you and Bush have for another war against Iran?
This is the real world Senator McCain – not Fantasy Land.

it is funny how mccain has served in military and is much much older then obama yet obama knows more about military life economy and well every subject then mcsame. obama makes mccain look like a fool. mccain should just retire before he gives himself a heart attack. the last old president we had just about destroyed the working class and shattered the unions so we dont need another reagan.

Let me get this right?
Obama is against the Iraq war but FOR the Afghanistan war?

Obama is not calling the shots in Afghanistan. he makes himself look sillier everytime he tries to make Afghanistan the focus of his foreign policy because he cannot give Iraq any credit for actually turning a corner. Afghanistan was relitively stable for a few years and only now have the Taliban gained strength again. Remember that the Terrorists in Afghanistan are different to the ones in Iraq, though a small number cross over to each region. Bush is not following Obama’s lead so he needs to get off his high horse and understand we already have a president right now and he is speaking to the right people on the ground in Afghanistan about what course of action to take. its not anything new by Obama that has made this shift.

GWB is such a screw-up. If more troops had been sent to Afghanistan in the beginning instead of starting an unecessary ego war in Iraq, the war in Afhanistan would have been won and over a long time ago. Now because of idiot Georgie, we are stuck in two wars and it looks like losing both and McCain wants to stay Georgies’s course. No thanks. Our government should now pull the troops out of Iraq, send what is needed to Afghanistan and start using some common sense instead of following our insane leader over a cliff to disaster.

It was John McCain is voted to go to war in Iraq in the first place, THAT DECISION WAS DEAD WRONG!!!
It is John McCain’s decision to vote to go to war in Iraq which has led to the deaths of 4000 soldiers.
IT IS JOHN McCAIN WHO HAS SAID THAT EVEN KNOWING THAT THE WAR IN IRAQ WAS STARTED ON FALSE INFORMATION, HE STILL WOULD STILL DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!!! SO JOHN McCAIN IS WILLING TO SEND SOLDIERS TO DIE IN A WAR BASED ON FALSE, AND FAULTY INFORMATION.

If you were to ask these two so called
President and wanna be President, if
they knowing what they know now would
they change anything. I would be that
these two would say NO, I would not
change a thing. Please, we have had
enough of this Administration, get smart
and don’t put another MISTAKE IN THE
WHITE HOUSE. Our Military deserves the
very BEST!!! They have yet to receive
any of the BEST but they certainly have
received the HORRIBLENESS OF BUSH!!!
OUR MILITARY AND AMERICANS DESERVE WAY,
WAY, BETTER THAN BUSH AND MCBUSH!!!
If half of America votes for MCBush
than you will reap what you sow.
LEARN YOUR LESSON!! VOTE OBAMA!!
FOR A REAL PRESIDENT!!

And right now we have a massive recall of IRR soldiers being recalled for this, but I have not seen anywhere in main stream media about the hearing about impeachment that Rep. Conyers is having Friday.

According to Robert Berns at Assossiated press, He claims the “US is now Winning a War that now Seemed Lost”. Well Hello Robert, Do you think that just maybe things are just a little mild right now because it’st just about 120 degrees in the middle east if not more in July and just maybe the extremist are relaxing on a beach in southern Turkey “Antalia” just meeting with “Arms Dealers” and Planning new Strategies and laughing at our us walking around in our winter military gear in a Desert in the middle of July. I just think things will change just a tad bit more in September when things cool down. What do you think Mr.”Self Proclaimed Military Expert”. Just Who is Paying your Salary Rober?? Could it be George Bush!Hmm
Also didn’t we learn anything from History Mr.Bush And his Pal Robert at Associated Press. If Alexander the Great Lost His Country’s Military resources and men, Russia’s Buddy Putin nearly destroyed his country’s economy running around in Afghanistan Don’t you think we should just cut our losses and get out.. Democracy is a western idea and culture…

I believe we need more engineers in Afghanistan to combat the IED problem. With them we will need an armored bn or two to protect them and a cavalry bn would also help to watch the flanks. Overall I would like to see app. 50,000 more troops there!!! Some more MP’s to watch over things in the towns, and also more special forces to train the Afghanistan citizens to stand up and face the enemy and fight so that one day they will have their own country!!! Something they can call home, and then they can look at their flag with honor and loyalty just like we (americans) do!!!
Thanks

For all those who think we can win in Afghanistan by use of violence, I can tell they are wrong. We don’t want more Viet Nams here. We need to show the world that we still have intelligent leaders who are willing to implement intelligent solutions to stop this crime. No more killings of civilians, no more destruction of countries, no more sacrifices of our youth lives for as consequence of those lies created by an incompetent president who happilywill be out in a few days.
