New Yorker Editor David Remnick Talks to ABC News About Cover Controversy

I just interviewed New Yorker editor in chief David Remnick for World News with Charles Gibson about the controversial cover of this week’s New Yorker.

"The intent of the cover is to satirize the vicious and racist attacks and rumors and misconceptions about the Obamas that have been floating around in the blogosphere and are reflected in public opinion polls," Remnick says. "What we set out to do was to throw all these images together, which are all over the top and to shine a kind of harsh light on them, to satirize them. That’s part of what we do."

But what about the fact that some folks see the images not as a satirical caricature but as an accurate portrait?

About one out of 10 Americans continue to believe that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, is a Muslim, after all.

"Satire always comes with some risk and the chance of people misunderstanding it, but if you’re going to satirize things only that there’s a 100% census on, there’s no satire," he said. "There’s maybe a certain percentage of the public that thinks there was no moon landing, should we not satirize that?"

What about the fact that Sen. Obama and his campaign seem legitimately upset? "A journalistic enterprise, whether it’s ABC or the New Yorker or the New York Times does not publish or broadcast for the sake of a political campaign," Remnick said. "I wish they understood it for what it was, but I can’t sit here and adjust what I do with an editor any more than ABC should adjust what it does as a network to please a political campaign." Remnick added that when he heard senior Obama adviser David Axelrod this morning "talking about it, he said, ‘Did I like the cover? No. Am I very upset about it? No. I’m much more upset about real issues in the country.’ That to me, that to me seemed like a sensible disagreement."

Remnick also took issue with one part of my blog post on the subject yesterday. I wrote that "the sophisticates at The New Yorker have come up with a cover that is sure to get the magazine a lot of attention… no Upper East Side liberal — no matter how superior they feel their intellect is — should assume that just because they’re mocking such ridiculousness, the illustration won’t feed into the same beast in emails and other media. It’s a recruitment poster for the right-wing. .. I would assume over at the Conde Nast building, they think it’s droll. "

Mr. Remnick took some umbrage with that. Not with the criticism per se, but my working-class tone.

"Playing the elitism card, when you, too, are from New York, and went to Dartmouth, I mean, that really doesn’t wash," Remnick told me. "I think it’s an easy card to play. Especially with the New Yorker, and, you know, I shouldn’t let you get away with it. You’re not exactly coming from a poor background or from an underfunded media outlet, and I don’t think that’s fair. I think it’s just not the level of thought and discourse that normally I see on your blog, and lot of other ones….I get the back and forth, I can live with that, but I thought that was kind of a cheap shot."

Remnick was not the only one to take issue with that part of my blog. (As "TBogg" wrote at FireDogLake, regarding "the New Yorker cover outrage du jour, Jake Tapper leaves his lunch pail in the truck, orders a shot and a beer at the bar, pulls a bandanna from the pocket of his work pants, wipes the sweat and grime from his face and neck … Jake is making a play for Tim Russert’s ‘ just a blue collar guy ‘ crown.")

Funny how Obama & Company yell and scream about this thing but laugh their heads of when Bush gets the same treatment. Oh well, little children must vent!

and Aston
I don’t remember a picture on the cover of a nationally once respected magazine like the New Yorker of Bush dressing like a terrorist and burning the American flag…do you?
especially when he was running for office.
He just needed to acknowledge bad judgement…sounds like he doesn’t even have the discipline to do that.

Your shot at the New Yorker’s elitism did give me a laugh. I know you’re about to sign up for the Blue Collar Comedy Tour! Your defense of Obama knows no bounds, even when the art of satire itself is invoked. Mark Twain wrote books that use the n word to show how stupid racism is. Should Mark Twain be chastized and banned?

Posted by: hopesprings52 | July 14, 2008, 4:33 pm 4:33 pm

At first I thought it was a malicious faux mock up. Imagine how hard I laughed when I discovered it’s actually hit the newsstands! Obama has no sense of humor. That’s why satire is off limits (according to him anyway).
And on a day when Obama thought he’d try to bamboozle us again with his latest “refining” of his Iraq strategy. Poor boy!

Posted by: s. valenti | July 14, 2008, 4:36 pm 4:36 pm

The satire is lost on average folks. To suggest they will see it as such is wishful thinking.

Posted by: independent | July 14, 2008, 4:37 pm 4:37 pm

Satire, for the generation that gets their news from the daily show, America is in for a lot of rude awakenings.

Posted by: david | July 14, 2008, 4:41 pm 4:41 pm

Okay, then turn about is fair play. This is a contest to win the presidency so the other contestant should be shown in satire. Maybe his wife dripping in money and jewels and he’s hanging out in his POW garb in today’s times saying things like. “I deserve some respect even if I’m not the one with the money.” Or similar satire, since we all have a sense of humor about such stuff.

Posted by: Brenda | July 14, 2008, 4:43 pm 4:43 pm

What can you do? Anybody who looks at this magazine cover and says “I knew it all along” or isn’t offended in any way most probably had no intention of voting for Obama anyway. So I don’t think it feeds misinformation in such a way that it’s going to cost him any votes. It’s more likely that he’ll get a sympathy vote or two from it. All the Clinton supporters who cried foul over her treatment by the media can really cry me a river after this stunt.

Posted by: JimmyTMac | July 14, 2008, 4:43 pm 4:43 pm

There is plenty of satire on display. Some of it is even funny. This certainly is, especially the reactions of those who support Barack Obama. Senator Obama’s lack of a sense of humor is indicative of a lack of experience.

Posted by: huerfano | July 14, 2008, 4:44 pm 4:44 pm

Even though it’s just satire, it seems more like something MAD magazine would print.

Posted by: Jessie | July 14, 2008, 4:44 pm 4:44 pm

Wow. Well Blitt did a poor job. He is just adding to what he “says” he is trying to depict. When I see that New Yorker cover this is what I see:

Posted by: voter | July 14, 2008, 4:45 pm 4:45 pm

Ouch! the truth really really does hurt especially when all you have is a false image to run on.

Posted by: Barbara karkie | July 14, 2008, 4:45 pm 4:45 pm

If they’d “satirized” McCain’s physical ailments, his earlier divorce , it would’ve been equally condemned. This cover will be misperceived by many people.
With satire, context is important.

As Obama told Hillary supporters….’get over it’.

Posted by: big mike | July 14, 2008, 4:46 pm 4:46 pm

I frankly don’t know why this is such a big story. It’s art. It’s satire. Political cartoons and satire are as old as America itself. Does this signal that there will be new standards applied as to whether art is acceptable in an Obama Administration?

Posted by: hopesprings52 | July 14, 2008, 4:47 pm 4:47 pm

Tell me one thing that is wrong in that cartoon!!
His outfit is part of his African heritage, why isn’t he proud of that?
Flag burning, relates to his friend Ayers that is know terrorist.
Osama bin laden, picutre…well that is a little too much..I will admit. Maybe because of the name similarties. Osama vs. Obama

Posted by: Frieda | July 14, 2008, 4:48 pm 4:48 pm

And for a 2nd Time today, ABC must express disgust over the New Yorker Magazine cover. And for the 2nd Time today – the story is UP FRONT. I wonder – Where did the first page story of our 9 (NINE) American Soldiers Killed TODAY in Afghanistan go? Where? I’m sorry – you mean I have to search for such a story??? Perhaps their deaths are just not an eye-grabber… Shameful on the part of ABC; shameful!

Posted by: Bronx4Freedom4All | July 14, 2008, 4:51 pm 4:51 pm

I understand the satire. However, there are people who will wander past the magazine stand and see that cover and believe it. For people who say that Obama needs a sense of humor, do they realize how many threats he has received? If this cover inflames one person (who doesn’t “get” the satire) with a gun, God help us all.

Posted by: Sue | July 14, 2008, 4:51 pm 4:51 pm

The chill of censorship.
Shouldnt they know by now only Republicansare allowed to be satirized?

Posted by: tr88 | July 14, 2008, 4:51 pm 4:51 pm

The worst thing about the New Yorker cover is that it’s exactly the kind of story that dominates the airwaves, blogs, and newspaper coverage at a time when there are approximately 7,486,213 more important things to talk about. I’m disappointed that Charlie Gibson is going to devote precious airtime talking about it.
It’s not good for the candidates, the media, or the voters.

Posted by: LESD | July 14, 2008, 4:56 pm 4:56 pm

I look at this ridiculous cartoon and see a case of liberals not being able to see the right kind of evidence to support their ‘politics of fear’ meme so they decide to project it onto others on their own. Maybe they do have a clue but politics trumps honor.
It’s happened before and it will happen again.

Posted by: harkin | July 14, 2008, 4:56 pm 4:56 pm

Obama isn’t running against Bush, he’s running against McCain. So, I wonder if New Yorker Magazine will be publishing an issue next with a satirical cartoon of Senator McCain morphing into President Bush. No… I guess that wouldn’t be satire, would it? That would be fact.

Posted by: Opa | July 14, 2008, 4:57 pm 4:57 pm

If you believe what is shown on the cover of the New Yorker, I have a bridge that I’ll sell you. Also if you are a person that would believe everything you see and/or hear, I’ll sell you a seat on the next Mar trip.

Posted by: Luis Young | July 14, 2008, 4:57 pm 4:57 pm

Even with satire their is a line…
I think equal time they should make fun of McCain being old…
it could go something like this…sorry I had to just dound this info…
When the following President’s reached McCain’s age…and these are the 5 oldest presidents…(none of whom were as old as McCain.
1.RONALD W. REAGAN –had his wife whispering sweet information to him in the second half of his Presidency
2. WILLIAM H. HARRISON- had died in office
3. JAMES BUCHANAN- had believed “patriots owned slaves” and had by the time he left started the civil war.
4. GEORGE H.W. BUSH- had George jr.
5. ZACHARY TAYLOR- died in office
that’s all true…although I wasn’t there for the consummation of GW.

Is there any way you can post the “off the record” portion of your interview? I would bet that would be the best part of a great interview.
and I guess it is expected that Remnick would take umbrage with a “working class” tone. He made me think of an old Sandburg poem about happiness.

Too bad that subtlety is wasted on the U.S. consumer. The midwest is a bunch of dolts who will use the cover as the basis of more misinformation. Just watch your email box for the latest moronic forwarding email that dissects the cover…..

Posted by: silly | July 14, 2008, 4:59 pm 4:59 pm

If I had a subscription or an advertising contract with the New Yorker, I’d cancel it!!! Depicting a presidential candidate to look like Osama Bin Laden and his wife as his terrorist partner is beyond disgusting. Bin Laden images do not depict satire considering that we lost over 3,000 citizens on September 11 and over 4,200 troops in the ensuing wars. Obviously Mr. Remnick’s charisma bypass operation was a success. I hope the risk that he has taken will cost his magazine countless $ in lost revenue.

Posted by: Pam | July 14, 2008, 5:02 pm 5:02 pm

It’s hysterical that the people this cover makes fun of don’t get it – and it’s sad, it reflects poorly on the state of an education in the US.
I understand the chagrin of the Obama campaign because they realize how many under informed voters will guess this is factual reporting and never read the magazine itself.

Posted by: Citizen Voter | July 14, 2008, 5:02 pm 5:02 pm

Funniest New Yawkah covah that I’ve seen in a very long time—usually they are awful. However this one is magnificently over the top, and I’ll bet that Obama loves it.

This is extremely offensive. I can’t believe the disgust that someone from America actually printed out this information. And you wonder why the other countries call America stupid. For the idiots who think this is great, well we know you are definetly not PATRIOTIC. Get over it and face the reality that BARACK OBAMA WILL BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT of the US. Obama 2008 Yes We Can!!

I mean seriously, look at all the heat that George Bush takes and pics of him as a monkey and as an idiot and even a tv show called “lil bush” that makes him look like an idiot and I can go on forever.
Why is it okay to make fun of Bush with satire but not Obama. Come on people, stop selectively censoring, it is our greatest threat to free speech.

Posted by: Mike | July 14, 2008, 5:07 pm 5:07 pm

I’m glad that the New Yorker is standing behind its decision to print this cover – most people are wise enough to see this as nothing more than satire – it reflects more on conservatives and than on Obama. I wish Obama had as much faith in the American people as the New Yorker does. The editor in chief of the magazine is right – it shouldn’t make editorial decisions based on someone’s political campaign.

Posted by: JG | July 14, 2008, 5:13 pm 5:13 pm

If Obama is actually elected in November, we are all going to have to stifle ourselves for four years. It seems that no amount of criticism is acceptable. No satire, no parody, no comedy. When Jon Stewart did a very mild piece about Obama a few weeks ago, there were howls of complaint. Every aspect of his personal life, history, appearance are already off limits. If he is elected it will only get worse. We will all just have to shut up and take it for four years. Is this really what America wants?

Posted by: Autodidact | July 14, 2008, 5:14 pm 5:14 pm

My problem with Obama supporters is that many do not understand satire and therefore criticize a favorable cover of a magazine. However, I think the New Yorker has missed the point – that many Americans believe Obama is not what he says he is – a Christian – and therefore, they do not know what his real beliefs are – or in fact, that he has any beyond wanting to be President.

Posted by: Jim | July 14, 2008, 5:15 pm 5:15 pm

i understand what the magazine was trying to do but putting it on the front page and making it dramatic as they did was just tasteless unless you read the article it doesnt make the obamas look good it just gives into the rumors of fox news

The mag cover is a bit over the top and I for one would say it should have not been published. With that said, that has been going on in one form or another for 8 years to Bush! I have never seen a sitting president disresepcted as the media and the left disresect Bush. Reading these comments, the left are very intolerent and a bit hypocritical (sp)…

Amen DL! Finally some truth here…
Along with many of his political chrnies jumping ship, more 4 star admirals and generals have resigned under this administration than any other in history. The reason is half war and half benefits. You would think an administration so hell bent on war would at least help to benefit those fighting within it!
If our military leaders are resigning, our military is weak. That’s what civilian Americans don’t understand and nor should they have to. As an active duty officer, I question the administration for this reason only.

I have two questions for Mr. Remnick. Who exactly is the target of this satire; and how is it obvious from the cover who that target is? I certainly don’t see any symbolism suggesting the media, or the blogosphere, or those crazy chain emails that have circulating about Obama. Yes, I know the context of the cover, but many, many people do not. If someone cannot determine the target of satire from a piece, the piece is not effective satire.

Posted by: DRC | July 14, 2008, 5:45 pm 5:45 pm

it’s funny, but obama said recently in jax florida that “they will be coming after me because i am black.” it seems to me that the only ones coming after him are from his own party or supporters. from bill and hillary clinton to jesse jackson and now the New Yorker, these are the ones pointing out his color or name. you won’t see or hear this kind of stuff from john mccain. this is why me, like so many other democrats will be voting for sen mccain to be our next president!

Posted by: gator in nc | July 14, 2008, 5:45 pm 5:45 pm

Obama’s perception and whining does not affect the rights of the New Yorker, or any other magazine (although such is a blatant attempt of the same), to satirize anyone, including the Most High Lord and Messiah.
Regardless of whether Obama or McCain “condemn” the content of the New Yorker, the writers and editors are simply exercising their rights as guaranteed by the Constitution.
All the furor and crying is simply lending credence to what would have otherwise been just another article.
For those of us who are not swayed by either political party, the candidates, or their religions, the Obama response reeks of the totalitarianism evident in third world regimes.

Where was all the moral outrage when Hillary was being lampooned in every newspaper, magazine, online trash mail and Saturnday Night Live Intro sketch week after week. Lines from Amy Poehler’s characterization of Hillary, giving reasons why she should win the nomination becaue she’s a ”
“Sore Loser who acknowledges that Racists would vote for her (as opposed to Obama).
*Someone who does not have ethical standards (as opposed to Obama).
*Someone who uses the Race Card to win (as Opposed to Obama)” …
Portraying Hillary as one who is a Sore Loser, has no ethical standards, and plays the race card? And this was one of the kinder sketches.
Was there outrage – quite the contrary, ABC’s Nightline devoted almost an entire show to Amy Poehler, praising her for her characterizations.
I read so much that crossed the line (to put it mildly) that I can only say to the Obamas, Welcome to the party. As you were warned, if you can’t take the heat, you should have stayed out of the kitchen. I thoroughly abhore these demeaning images no matter who is depicted. Unfortunately, it is becoming the American Way. Who am I to say what a person can find funny. Free speech and all that.

Inside jokes should stay inside the cover — there really are people who would believe the depiction and unfortunately they are the ones who look at the pictures and don’t comprehend the words.
Besides it was incomplete — if it were it would have had Hillary or McCain with a thought bubble — okay now for the encore — “equal time” being “equal time” Beer Suds and dollar signs for Cindy and full fury and madness for John??

Wait, was it the artist who said they were proud of their country for the first time? Was it the artist who hung around with Bill Ayers? Was it the artist who attended a radical church for 20 years? The artist only drew a picture that depicts the behavior of the Obama’s. It looks like the chicken have finally come home to roost.

Jay hawk
If McCain was satirized in a way that was offensive to him being in a POW camp or Hillary in some way that was degrading to women…i.e some violence toward women issue…
that would be inappropriate for a national magazine…whether we get upset because it is obama or not…the magazine has to take the hit from advertizers and subscription cancellations… most of whom probably support Obama…whom this bad judgement call was about.
their is a line with satire and “venue”
right to free speech doesn’t mean if you go out and have an aryan nation rally… a bunch of people aren’t going to surround your parade screaming at you…
There is a place and time…and the New Yorker made a bad judgement call on this…whether it be Obama as a terrorist…or McCain as a wife beater… it was inappropriate…and it will hit them in the pocketbook.

Pam: Bin Laden images do not depict satire considering that we lost over 3,000 citizens on September 11
**********************************
Rev Wright (BHO’s spiritual adviser) said those deaths were chickens coming home to roost. BHO took his little girls to learn such ideas. Can you see how America has trouble knowing what is going on behind his “smiling face”? “Smiling faces sometimes lie!”
Apparently you think those 3,000 death’s were pretty vicious–unless Obama is opportunistically using them. Then they are okay.
With Obama the box is so prettily wrapped, but human bones lie within.

Mr. Remick: Add your name to the list of those who deliberately lie; misrepresent; destroy reputations; further bad judgements….etc… and take your name off the lists of credible reporters whose judgement can be relied upon. All done in the name of humor or irony? In reality you become a part of the evil that frightens people for their own pleasure. These are serious times and someone in your position has the opportunity to enlighten and educate people to the truth. A “LIE” is simply the intent to deceive. I beleive you have the intent to deceive and no matter what guise you use to spread the lies, you have made yourself a part of the problem. It is too bad that you are in a position to influence people as your hatred and odd sense of humor are so distorted. If I were your mother, I would be very ashamed of you.

Once upon a time.. there was a TV commercial line that asked “Where’s the beef?” Today we have two noodles running for Prez, one’s a linguinni and a one’s a spagetti, and there just ain’t no beef in either of these congressional patsies. Perhaps the satire is not which one is better than the other. Perhaps the joke’s on US. After all, in a country with over 300 million citizens and 55 million illegals, are O’Bama and McCain the “best” we have? Maybe we ought to import a Chinaman or Indian, or an Arab Prince, and sign the country over to him for four years. Might cost a little more, but what the hay, if he takes dollars why worry. Right? I think most people were corrected in believing Obama is really Christian, but the few that refused to be believe the facts, cannot and will not believe it. You can no more change their minds than you change the minds of 9/11 conspiracy theorists.
Also, I think people are forgetting what satire is and why it’s needed and the history of satire used in politics.

Posted by: Jason | July 14, 2008, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm

Liberals and Democrats: You can’t have it both ways. You say that Obama’s race is off limits but you use it whenever it is right for you. You can’t claim racial progress (in Obama being the first black presidental nominee) and then try to block racial dialogue (no matter what medium it takes shape). If anybody knows, satire is suppose to be humor that is funny, thought provoking, and sometimes misunderstood. It seems like to me that liberals and democrats are the one who doesn’t understand satire, especially satire coming from one of your own magazines.
This cover is not harmful to Obama’s image. What is harmful to Obama’s image is his campaign and the MSM coming out to complain about this.

This New Yorker cover is a nasty piece of work, and no amount of weasel words will cover it up nor camouflage it. This is too crude to be called satire. And didn’t Time magazine place Newt Gingrich on the cover portraying him as The Grinch?

Wake up Senator Obama supporters. Did you think for one moment that the conservative right was going to allow Senator Obama tobecome president without a fight. Some of us saw this coming months ago and tried to get you to understand that the Republican Party was using Senator Obama to keep Senator Clinton or Senator Edwards from winning the nomination because they have always felt that their chances of winning against Senator Obama are greater. The Republicans have become masters at using the race card to win elections. Have you forgotten their “Southern Stategy of 20 years” and their Willie Horton technique. They played the Democractic Party and may get away with another victory. P.S. Did I memtion that they knew these things about Senator Obama all along and that they knew all along that he is considered the most liberal Senator in Washington, D.C. which makes it almost impossible for him to gain enough independent White votes to win the election. They continue to outsmart the naiveness of hte Democractic Party. Final P.S. I am a Southern African American Democractic Christian who will continue to hope we have not blown a huge opportunity to get our country back on the right track. I will definitely vote for Senator Obama because four more years of Republican leadership will almost litterally destroy our great nation. Absolute final P.S. to naieve Democratic leadership, please resign. During the past 20 years, we’ve only had two great Democracts that I feel are as smart as or are smarter than the Republicans — those two are President Clinton and Senator Edwards. That’s why the Republicans fear them so much.

No matter . . . either way . . . “It works!”
Meanwhile . . Hillary’s minions are busy working on the best plan for exposing obama’s overtly fake “Certification of Birth” attributed to the State of Hawaii. The fanatical Clinton post menopause storm trooper crowd will be on the move around the time of the Dilemmacrat Party convention. When B. Hussein Obama, as a non citizen is disqualified to hold office as President of the United States, the party stooges will turn their lonely eyes to queen Hillary for salvation. She then becomes the lawful nominee. As clueless John McQueeg stumbles around sucking up to border crashing illegal aliens, taking lousy advice from his dimwit advisors, making aggravating statements and disaffecting masses of tentative voters . . . No one surely thinks this was innocent satire on the part of the New Yorker. If you go that far, then one has to look for who benefits from the smear.
I think there are three prime suspects: the creepy Clintons, geriatric McCain, or a move by the New Yorker to take over National Enquirer. There are not a lot of people who benefit.

The absolute hypocrisy from the left about this is astounding. Their white hot hatred of President Bush and, even worse, VP Cheney is a daily occurrence in political cartoons across the countries major print media. Jake, you shouldn’t be personally attacked, but neither should the artist for the New Yorker. Isn’t free speech the foundation of all our liberties? Why is it that everyone is so vigilant about spotting “racism” (where there is none in numerous cases) but no one cared a thing about the Hillary Nutcracker or the urinal target being sold on the internet with her face on it, why did an elected official think it was okay to compare Hillary to Glenn Close’s homicidal/suicidal character in Fatal Attraction, the list could go on and on.

There is satire and then there is blasphemy. This depiction is tilting heavily toward the latter. The only saving grace in this despicable display is the fact that it correctly identifies a small segment of the population, who unfortunately call themselves Americans, and their lack of intellect. Those who possess a higher degree of thought processes, will see this for what it truly represents, an indictment and correct depiction of the intellectual state of the GOP, thanks largely to individuals such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and similar others, and I’m a 62 year old white, now former Republican, who is doing everything in my power to see to it that John McCain is not elected.

WARNING – - SARCASM BELOW
How ’bout that New Yorker magazine perpetuating the myth of the NE Liberal Elite. Sure, they were trying to mock all the myths and misunderstandings being disseminated by the intellectually-challanged (eg, everyone outside the NE). What they fail to understand, in their Ivy-league-fueled-intellectual-superiority, is that many people (let’s just call them Conservatives, for shorthand), do not get sarcasm. And worse, some Yankee Rag is seen 1) approving of a terrorist in the Whitehous, and 2) probably more importantly, is mocking the fact that this is a REAL issue for them. This is what BillyBob and Cooter debate while sharing a 12pak of Schlitz, and now there is proof that their worst fears are true. Sure, this group also beleives that the moon landing was fake, and that W was a great war hero, but they still vote, and they vote for whom the Limbough tolls.
I’m nominating the Democrats as the “most likely to lose an un-losable election”. I can hardly wait for Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Wright, and Al Sharpton to weigh in on this. Their insight is consistently helpful in furthering allienation.

But what about the fact that some folks see the images not as a satirical caricature but as an accurate portrait?
About one out of 10 Americans continue to believe that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, is a Muslim, after all.
I have never heard Obama say one negative word about any so called satirical caricatures of George W Bush – now that he is in the spot light; God or Allah forbid.
If one were to really know the Muslim religion they would realize that it is OK to lie to a non believer, one never knows the truth, we Christians are considered the unwashed.
I have also witnessed many politicians take the oath and end up being self serving and power hungry. Obama being one of them – took the oath and has less than 150 days experience – absent from the floor because he spends so much time on the road hyping himself for president job. Now is or has he really lived up to his oath of office NO-NO-NO!
Now he is upset about a political caricature of himself – so what – if you can’t stand the heat in the kitchen get out. What is he going to do when our enemies start calling him stupid – cry. The real world is tough so get used to Obama.

It seems that New Yorker is doing a better job at perpetuating vicious and racist stereotypes than it is at humor. I didn’t think it was funny at all. I love the New Yorker and make it required reading in my house. I am also not one of Obama’s neophytes. I am however insulted by the cover because I know precisely what it conveys and insinuates to the Jewish and moderate Republican populations of this country. It is disingenuous at best to pretend that this satire is intended to poke fun at Fox Network projections of this senator and his family.
This “satire” is meant to undermine this family’s credibility and humanity.
Thanks for turning me into an Obama supporter. Shame on you New Yorker. And to the idiot that suggested the photo of Barak Obama wearing traditional East African garb is Muslim clothes is a moran. MHP – - I agree that the best sarcasm is based on facts. But here, the New Yorker is blasting the fact that 10-15% of Americans beleive that he is a terrorist etc. So this isn’t about whether or not he is Christian enough, but is about mocking those that beleive he is not. That’s what makes this so damaging to the campaign, as it mocks the beliefs of this group.

What a disgusting but representative expression of the kind of attitude and thinking that has the USA in a pickle in the world and the infrastructure in such an awful site. This is racism from the right who don’t want to kill a child in an abortion but want guns in everyones hands to blow adversaries away.Senator Grahams insensitive and ingnorant comments about “mental recession” is so indicative of how out of touch politicians are about domestic issues. Americans are not eating can’t afford to keep their houses and we are supposed to engage in an intellectual discorse over what is obviously a racist depiction on the cover of a promenent magazine. What a sad day for American when the racics couch this as politics. I find our current ruling class repugnant. Pointless in Portland

Smokey Word – Most of those Americans who believe negative rumors about Obama are not likely to change their opinion of him before November, regardless of this magazine cover, just like the millions of Americans who support Obama or McCain – are not likely to change their opinion based on a cartoon. Have some faith in your fellow voters. This magazine cover simply pokes fun at the people who think those negative rumors about Obama are true.

This was not innocent high-brow satire on the part of New Yorker. This was a smear. They figure that if they can mislead 10% of the public (OK, the dumbest 10%) then that is a substantial number of people. And the argument that the liberals are constantly making negative cartoons about Bush is not a good comparison, since he is ALREADY president, and no one can do anything to change that short of impeachment.

I loved it! It pooled together a lot of the views that the Obama’s have. The flag in the fire place is classic Obama, based on what his wife and spiritual leader preached. They do have a dislike for ‘bitter’ America. I don’t trust Hussein’s background.

I see many comments from right wingers “haha i guess more people are buying the magazine than you lefties would like to beleive” and other such nonsense because it is apparently selling out as if this is a bad thing for Obama.
THIS IS GREAT FOR OBAMA because the article in the New Yorker is actually in DEFENSE of Obama and serves to debunk these silly rumors.
If anything the right wing zealouts should be championing a boycott of the magazine, not laughing and pointing fingers and going “aahh haaa” like we’re on a playground as if you’ve somehow just gotten over on someone.

The problem with your cover is that it will give Obama something else to whine about. he’s always crying “prejudice” or something equally ridiculous. Next he’ll decide that Hillary gave you the idea for the cover and that she’s trying to take HIS nomination, no matter how queationable he won it. Bad judgement . . . allowing an immature changeling to “get something” on you.

RIGHT WING DUM DUMS – “If anything the right wing zealouts should be championing a boycott of the magazine…” – The funny thing is that there’s so many people who don’t realize that this cover is satirizing many of the false beliefs these wacky righties have. They’re being satirized and don’t even realize it. How funny is that?

The New Yorker magazine tried to pass this off as a parody of conservatives. In reality it is their play for controversy. Unfortunately Michelle is not an AK enthusiast. In fact I assume quite the opposite. What the New Yorker has unwittingly captured in this cartoon is unrelated to their purported “Obama as terrorist portrayed by conservatives narrative”. What they have distilled in this cartoon is B.O. and wife’s smugness. They have superior attitudes and the cartoonist has captured it with the looks on their faces and trying too hard to be cool fist-bump.
Gee what will poor little old me do if Obama does not get elected? Who will tell me what to do or what to think? I’ll be lost. And apparently so will pretty boy Robert Redford.

it doesnt matter that the story behind the illustration puts the Obamas in a good light. Anybody who has done even a superficial investigation into the Obamas public past, knows that Obama, and his wife have both displayed racial resentment towards whites, and that they both chose to join a black liberation congregation, remaining there for 20 years, only leaving for, political expediance. We also know that the Obamas have befriended anti-american radicals, and that almost every terrorist group both domestic, and abroad would like to see him elected as the next President. We know that he kicked two men of God under the bus, Wright, and Pfleger, both men who he credits with being moral compass. Wright now refers to Obama as just a politician who will say whatever he has to for political gain. I can go and on and on. Obama was definately Muslim as a child, his family is Muslim today in Kenya, and on and on and on. Lies pandering, no experience, arrogant, flip flopper and always condescending. How is this guy even around? Any other politician would have been laughed out of this race before it started.

That cover was hilarious! Sorry to the obama cultists, the ‘change’ and ‘hope’ politician, who has already shown he can flip-flop any promise or personal pledge the second he finds it politically gainful.
He is the same old politician with a whole bunch of question marks about his past (muslim before a reverend white catholic), his character (lots of shady associates) and his abilities (no experience). Seems as soon as any satire is thrown his way his godly presence does not approve of he gets all whiney and crybaby about.

Most would agree the cover falsely portrays Mr and Mrs Obama’s sentiments. While the news media and the Obama campaign were previously fanning the flames of racism, Obama never spoke out against these attacks and mischaracterizations of his opponents. When Obama campaign published false reports on positions and votes of his opponents and Obama was given the opportunity to correct the misrepresentation, he continued to enforce the campaign lies. After Obama helped his cousin religious platform campaign in Kenya and there was incredible violence directed towards the incumbent’s Christian supporters, Obama lacked words and took no action to stop the violence. At least, McCain is able to speak his mind and publically gave his opinion that he found this coverpage offensive.

Thought the satire was humorous. Anyone who feels that what the cartoonist drew was factual, so be it. Quite naive, yet if one still supports Bush, the insinuations make sense. As far as to satirize Bush, one couldn’t continually anticipate his blunders. Their campaign team is trying to reign in M.O.’s militancy and probably succeeding to a degree, however based on her previous statements and behavior you can only conclude that she is an angry, unappreciative, whining, poor me nightmare. But she has a right to be per the guilt ridden Libs.
So if she becomes the 1st lady she can subsidize her meager W/H income (her & BHO) by writing a book entitled “THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I HAVE BEEN PROUD OF MY COUNTRY”. If they lose (God willing and I’m not religious) she can still write a book entitled “LOOKING BACK – THE FIRST AND ONLY TIME I WAS PROUD OF MY COUNTRY.”

I’m sorry, but just because Jake Tapper points it out and he is a fellow elitist doesn’t make it untrue.
The New Yorker is as elitist as they come. It takes a couple of Midol to get through any article they write about politics (mainly because they are all so dreadfully long and tediously defensive of their premise).
Tapper was correct. And he is correct that the GOP will use the NYer cover to their benefit. So, Thanks NYer!! And Remnick doesn’t seem to find any problem with the fact that far more than 10% of Obama supporters believe that Obama actually DOES have experience or accomplishments to justify his presidential run. I don’t see anybody rushing to correct that huge misconception or to correct the impression that Obama has never had an actual JOB which wasn’t either politically or publicly funded (something which every other President to date has had).
Most non-elitist consider experience as an actual ‘worker’ to be valuable if not mandatory to executive experience. A ‘community organizer’ is political speak for union-flunky/political hack and not one which he is willing to detail is any meangingful way for fear of actual scrutiny.
And do most Obama supporters know that he has a $1.2M loan on his first and only ever home? How does a guy who is a State Senator get a $1.2M loan??? Kinda nice as a first home, huh? That house must have been valued at $1.5M or more which pretty much puts ‘Barry’ out of the ‘average guy’ category in Chicago by a factor of 5-8.

Regardless of my political bent, I was disappointed to see one of my favourite magazines descend to such poor judgement with regard to cover art. Even John McCain thinks it stinks. Though I imagine he is wondering what their humourists will do to HIM, given the obvious lack of relevance necessary for cover art. It smacks of locker-room humour at the country club at best, and plays only on the concept that his name sounds Muslim.
If it was supposed to be satire, why didn’t they just print it inside the magazine with a caption?
Everyone knows that covers are visible even to people who don’t buy the publication. Not everyone “gets” their sense of humour, necessarily.
Your interview with the editor was particularly funny in that it sounded more like a simpering schoolyard fistfight, with him backtracking and throwing the blame on you for even questioning him. Really funny, actually.
I think he has done his publication and readership a tremendous disservice. I wrote a letter to him stating this, and received an autoreply “out of office” notification, with a brief explanation of their selection of cover art.
Yeah, I’ll bet he’s out of the office! Perhaps a strongly suggested “hiatus”? I don’t expect to see too many “letters to the editor” published anytime soon.
What a wuss!

Posted by: pc | July 14, 2008, 10:19 pm 10:19 pm

One thing that is clear in the cover of the New Yorker and that is, America is decaying from within. We do not need to fear terrorist, we need to fear ourselves. What in the world are we coming to? Why are we still commenting on the primary race when it is OVER. Had Sen. Clinton, I would be out there supporting her. As an Independent, I chose sometime ago who I would vote for. I do not like nasty campaigns as they serve no constructive purpose. I have never heard Sen. Obama use the race card. Others have and I admire him for trying to stay focused. Whether we believe it or not, GOD is in control so we need to realize that we alone can do nothing–only by His mercy do we exist.
Yes, at one time I enjoyed reading the New Yorker but I do not think I will ever bother reading this magazine again due to the level they have stooped. As stated by Edmund Burke, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil in Ameerica is for good men to do nothing.”

And I’m sure New Yorker wlll exhibit that Rt Wing lying blog pitch like they have done in this issue… after all they have journalistic integrity and courage right? There have been many reports of people fainting at rallies for Senator Obama. I have seen this myself on several occasions. For most white Americans, Obama represents the first time they have seen or heard an African man speak to them. Many white Americans are transfixed by Obama because for the first time in their lives they are encountering a leader who speaks the TRUTH and who puts the TRUTH FIRST. That is power and it explains the appeal and power of Obama.

Posted by: Buckaroobonsai | July 14, 2008, 10:34 pm 10:34 pm

Buckaroo,
No head shape guess? It’s hard to figure out right? I know. Sadly, McCain does not generate a lot of interest or excitement. So no pictures or covers anywhere for McCain. I think he likes it that way. Did you see his “speech” on June 3rd? (Greenback drop)

Your post…Truth First |…… sound like the definition of a cult to me.
Obama stands for great change but no one knows what kind of change, and his supporters blindly follow.

This article says that Obama was asked about this New York Observer article he replied “No COmment”. Yet, the next day his campaign was outraged and spoke out against it.
Does Obama know how to answer for himself? Who will really run the country if he is elected?

Joe Reed,
Yes I did, but I thought all the comedy versions were too funny!

Posted by: Buckaroobonsai | July 14, 2008, 10:42 pm 10:42 pm

Funny, New Yorker has crammed everything said about the Obamas into a cover and then written two outstanding pieces to tell you about the guy. Just because it’s not P.C. doesn’t mean we can’t laugh about it. With all of the bad that is on our plate humour often gets out of line.

The depictions of Geoge Bush as an idiot is a caricature. Bush is rather dim witted and lazy. Portraying Obama as a flag burning, Osama bin laden hero worshipping terrorist is beyond the pale. This only proves to everyone that people who love George Bush are idiots.

chattyway – much talk about nothing. Everything you are talking about occurred in 1st through 4th grade. How many 4th graders stand up to school officials and denounce their father’s religion? You are holding Obama accountable for his father’s actions when he was 6-10 years old. Is that really rational? I don’t think kids at that age have the capacity to realize that the parent’s religion is wrong. They just do whatever their parents tell them to do and also try to avoid serious, boring topics like this because they would rather have fun.

Keep it up, McCain! We want you as our President! I’m so glad this illustration came out today, it’s hurting Obama’s campaign and America is finally seeing the Obama’s for what they really are. A picture says a thousand words and this one will definitely do damage to Obama!

Posted by: david from texas | July 14, 2008, 11:04 pm 11:04 pm

So, when Obama said he is for change, I take it now, after seeing all his personal flip-flops that he means he is for changing what he believes in based on who the current audience is. He is the exact epitome of a self-serving fool preaching to itching ears.

What is all the rage abut the New Yorkers coming from? People who don’t think, read or process information? Is it the MTV generation venting anger because they think Obama is being maligned? Well this 40 something African American thinks the New Yorker cover is awesome. I causes political debate, well at least I hope it does. But if people continue to be lazy and take the caricature at face value of course it won’t.

Posted by: dan | July 14, 2008, 11:24 pm 11:24 pm

I am curious. John McCain has asked Obama to debate him with an audience of veterans and Obama wont do it. Now, Obama is so quick to criticize McCain on the Iraq war, but when given the opportunity to make a stand in front of the veterans, Obama refuses. Why is this? Is it because Obama knows he will fail, that he really doesnt have a position on the Iraq war? Why is Obama afraid to debate McCain? hmmm…..empty suit with no substance I suppose.

It does not surprise me that the editor of the magazine cover that is the epicenter of controversy would defend his decision to run the cover. This is not journalism by any stretch of the imagination. There is no satire without truth and it appears that editorial perogative doesn’t require intelligence.

I sent an email to the New Yorker and this was thier response:
Thank you for writing. We appreciate your comments and, if you have a question, we’ll do our best to respond. However, owing to the volume of correspondence, we cannot reply to every e-mail individually.
About this week’s issue: Our cover, “The Politics of Fear,” combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious distortions they are. The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall— all of them echo one attack or another. Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful, and the absurd. And that’s the spirit of this cover.

If I was Barack OBama and his family i would feel somewhat offended because many people think this is the center of controversy for the 2008 presidential race and some exploit this in a negative way. However I do not believe this was David Remnicks’s intention and should not be made a big deal. I wonder if obama will say anything about this.

Every time Americans gas up, they are reminded that the Democrats’ refusal to allow oil drilling virtually anyplace has caused the long-term escalation in oil prices in the United States. Democrats don’t say they oppose all drilling, but they do. You can drill, but not in Alaska, not off shore, not in the shale, etc.. McCain is benefiting and Obama suffering because of the drilling issue. It is most likely this issue which is driving the closing of the race. Rasmussen has the race tied for two days in a row in his tracking and Newsweek has the Obama lead collapsing from fifteen points to three. And it may be oil that is driving the difference.

Posted by: david from texas | July 15, 2008, 12:19 am 12:19 am

I love the cover. I happen to think it DOES speak to the fears in America about this candidate. The majority of Americans harbor these thoughts and feelings about the Obamas. That is why the democratic nominee needs to be HRC. That is, of course, if we want a democratic White House next year.
The article also, is quite elucidating. Providing the needed Bio on this unknown senator from Illinoise. The only problem, of course, for the Obama camp is that it paints a portrait of Obama which says he’s exactly politics as usual. Aside from having quite the over-blown ego, Obama has shown he is all about Obama.
Kudos to the New Yorker for stepping UP and addressing the current, vital pulse of America…as usual!

This is American ignorance at it’s cynical best. Unfortunately, the editor doesn’t realize that every country is watching American politics to see just how fast we can self-destruct. While there are greater issues in America that could be reflected on the cover, such as the economy or higher gas prices, instead the editor chose this tasteless piece of lies that demonstrates how distant America is from a true “United States”

I am a college student and Obama supporter, but I must say that I do see the ridiculous humor presented by the cartoon. We live in a time of fear and suspicion, and I am surrounded by evangelical and racist family members and co-corkers who buy into these rumors and believe them whole-heartedly. Satire is meant to be so outrageous and ridiculous that all will find it funny, and the funny thing about this is that people honestly do believe these lies ushering in a new era of nativism, which makes it not so funny. I, being an evil liberal, just blame George W. Bush for making our country so fearful of change.

I think the cover of the New Yorker is just what it is – a satrical cartoon. The Obama folks and the American people need to lighten up. If the New Yorker had done a satirical cartoon about McCain, no one would have paid any attention. If Obama and his backers are going to get into the main stream they have to deal with things just like everyone else. They need to move on, get over their sensitivity, and not try to turn everything into a racial issue.

This job by the GOP and the New Yorker Magazine has derailed McCain campaign. McCain will lose the November election. What the New Yorker ought to be drawing now is the GOP of Hate, Division, and Downgrading America until she is finally dead. GOP may love America, but the heart of GOP is dark and is full of hate and divisiveness. The people driving GOP need to embrace love (JESUS) and still be tough on planting and nurturing righteousness in the nation. Then God will buy it. You cannot serve God and the devil at the same time. I am more of a GOP than of any party, and I am disappointed. I must say that the so-called Christians in the Republican Party better rise up and be speaking against evils like this drawing which take away discussions on issues and then guzzle votes by fear, producing leaders that keep leading America into the ditch, without God’s backing. The so-called Christian conservatives are keeping quiet again, yet they continue to wonder why the younger Christians are frustrated. Hate and Jesus do not mix. True love and Jesus work together. When shall the GOP have faith enough to just hold on to GOD alone and win an election fair and squarely so God can help America again? GOP is driving away real Christians by this type of hate, divisiveness, and insults on people and the nation. This is not politics. This is hate mongering, lying, and cheating. McCain’s campaign is derailed!

It saddens me to see so many negative comments about people because of “hear say” in the media. People think that racism doesn’t exist in America, but these comments show otherwise. Can you imagine a “red neck” with cowboy gear ignorant mispronouncing and incorrectly using the English language-a picture of a white Texan with a noose and the confederate flag and the white woman standing next to him-dump founding surrendering to a man just because he is a man holding a mixing bowl and spoon. Just because stereotypical things are said does not mean it needs to be published in print for the public to mock and continue to use negatively.

I know that most find this satire as very humorous. And there have been better and worse since political satires have been around. But in these times around the world, what are other countries going to perceive this as? I am not quite sure they will think it is as funny as we do. And with all the hoop-la going on over this particular one on all the networks, where are all the front page news on the “9″ AMERICANS that just lost their lives in Afghanistan. It is a sorry thing when a political satire takes president over them. I am sure their families aren’t laughing that hard about now. In ending, if it were McCain being blasted and God Forbid about POW’s, the shoe would be on the other foot…

The chief editors and other executives at The New Yorker are not exactly dolts. So why wasn’t one of them able to realize the potential for someone to misunderstand their supposed satirical intent?
A caption such as “The real picture?” or something along those lines would have made their satirical point clear and avoided a lot of racist-related comments on both sides.

Fair is fair right? Now lets see a cartoon of an old McCain being tortured in a prison camp wearing Depends with sympathetic POW MIA flag wavers in the background hurling their votes at the great war hero. Seriously, the New Yorker is a smart magazine and the method in their madness will surely only help the Obama camp and force a conversation on the ridiculous rumors about Obama being a muslim. The fact that the Obama camp is saying they find it disrespectful is how anyone would react if they saw themselves and their family members portrayed in a false scenario. People who find this as high entertainment really need to get a life.
As an Obama supporter annoyed by the image, but happy. This will help our cause. Thank you New Yorker!

This depiction is in poor taste. It is not satire. It denigrates the hard work that has been done to fight that whole idea. As an African American I find it completely offensive. Satire is defined as “a literary work in which vices, follies, stupidities, abuses, etc. are held up to ridicule and contempt”; according to Websters New World Dictionary. This would mean that the New Yorker would have to focus on those that believe what they are trying to depict. A satirical depiction would be portray Sentor Obama as half white and half white, then ask the question “Which side will you be voting for?” I suggest that all caring Americans cancel their subscription to the New Yorker and change to Vanity Fair.

I have never voiced my opinion about politics before, but this New Yorker cover hit me a nerve within me. The artist must have read my mind because this is the IMAGE that I have of the Obamas.
Obama can claim that he is a Christian all he wants, he sure doesn’t sound sincere when he says it, he sounds like a sound bite!
I thought it strange that when people started commenting on why Obama never wore a flag pin, he started to wear one. Why did Michelle Obama say that she was ashamed of her country one minute and now says how much she loves America. How did they manage to stay in a church, whose pastor spouted anti-american/anti-white sermons, for all those years and then all of a sudden decide that this pastor was not their cup of tea!! Why didn’t they run away from that church the moment those kinds of things were said in the beginning? You mean to tell me that in all the years they never heard anything like that before? Am I the stupid one here?
There is something that stinks to high heaven about the Obamas. I’ll keep following my gut and say “NO” to OBAMA!!!
God help us!!

Reading all these posts worries me tremendously. So many people have their heads in the sand. Don’t they realize that Hitler was Germany’s “Man of Change”? He ran on the same platform …. he was going to bring about great changes to benefit everyone. Well, he certainly did! The citizens rallied to support him – cheered him on as they watched in idolization. Sounding familiar? And after all the “changes”, we know what happened next.
With Barack we will be asking for bigger government, bigger taxes to support all the “giveaway” programs he is proposing, less money in everyone’s pockets, and the loss of even more small businesses. You think big business runs everything now? Just wait! The government already wants to tell us what light bulbs to buy, how our food should be grown (and who can grow it), what we can and can’t wear, what can legally be put into our childrens’ vaccinations, etc. Pretty soon we’ll be told we can only have so many children (like China already does). Where does it all end?

Its interesting that this issue of the New Yorker is re-affirming what many know of the Fourth Estate–increasingly self-serving and irrelevant.
Yes, the New Yorker will have more people talking about it, probably get a ‘needed boost’in circulation, but what added information do I have on candidate Obama? None!
That an ‘elist’ magazine would for the first African-American candidate, considered ‘viable’ –tarnish and slander his ‘image as their contribution to one of the most important elections in this century is mind bogling.
‘Satire’ is supposed to reveal some truths with a slant. Is Obama a terrorist, a Muslim? Does his wife carry the characteristics of one. The seeds of ‘fear and doubt” in this cartoon have been planted to stain. For the bigots they have been given much help in their quest to make another descent “American” into a monster.
Like those who burned the ‘books’ thanks The New Yorker for creating an unnecessary distraction from the real issues in this election: such as joblessness, failing banks, and the eroding middle class.
Sorry, I found none of this funny or entertaining! The New Yorker is guilty of not satire but SLANDER!!

The depiction of Obama and his wife as Arab terrorists is a caricature (def: any imitation or copy so distorted or inferior as to be ludicrous). Obama did, however, attend a church with a militant preacher, and palled around with an American terrorist named William Ayers. Since it is very unlikely Obama’s actual persona is anything like what we would attribute to a Middle-Eastern terrorist the picture therefore qualifies as satire and shouldn’t get everybody’s panties in a bunch. As for President Bush, many people may not agree with his policies, but his score of over 1200 on the SAT (which by today’s scoring would be over 1300) places him in the top 10% of those that take the test. With that in mind, comparing him to a braying jackass is beyond the pale. This only proves to everyone that people who love Barack Obama are hyper-sensitive and can’t take any depiction that they feel is unflattering to him.
(For the record, I feel any satirical caricature is within bounds for Obama, McCain, Bush…for that matter any politician. I only wished to make a point.)

I’m pretty sure John McCain would laugh it off if they put him on the cover dressed as a flag burning islamic terrorist.
Apparently that just hits too close to home for Obama.

The satirical target of the New Yorker cover is clear to anyone with a brain, which in this case apparently excludes Barack Obama and all of his supporters. Wake up, voters, and see what the brouhaha over this cover portends: voting Obama into office will mean censorship of the worst kind–any criticism of him or his policies will be drowned out with a resounding cry of “Racism!” Bush has been the target of so much nastiness, and you never hear him nor his people complain. By the way, I am a Democrat who has nothing but contempt for Bush’s policies… but I also know a dangerous personality cult when I see one, and the one around Barack Obama is worse than any in contemporary American history.

When I saw the new yorker at the news stand, I almost bought it. I thought what the hey! A liberal rag telling the truth.? This has to be a fluke. Someone bought the rag and was telling the truth for once. with hands trembling I opened to the ownership page, and the yellow stench of journalism reaked from the page. Satire??? Boy did they screw up.I put it back in the rack backwards behind some comic books.

Jim, I did not cite your opinions in particular. I simply stated that the controversy could have been avoided if the cartoon had been clearer.
I am not an apologist; I am only seeking clarity in a broadly distributed publication so that any racial innuendoes are not communicated unintentionally.

Posted by: glennstmac | July 15, 2008, 1:25 am 1:25 am

That’d be great Brenda! It would so silly that no one would take it seriously. Also, it be so overtly partisan that anyone with a brain would be able to tell it was coming from an Obama supporter. Do you actually think it would get people to maybe second guess their support for McCain? The fact that the Obama cartoon is featured on a left leaning magazine should only make it more obvious in its satirical nature. What are you guys so affraid of anyway? I never believed the false rumors about Obama, but by the way many Dems are so up in arms about this, I have to wonder why you guys feel this is hitting so close to home.

Posted by: rocco | July 15, 2008, 1:28 am 1:28 am

The best art is multi-purpose; it can be taken several different ways, all complementing each other.
I saw it as old New Yorker light irony. Making fun of the rightwingers who exaggerate the Obamas’ … odd ties … and also making fun of the Obamas for having chosen those ties, however flimsy the ties may be …. And a goodly portion of cross cultural contrast, a sort of Charles Addams flavor.
A McCain White House might feature Readers’ Digest and Saturday Evening Post and an old tv with rabbit ears, lots of military memorabilia…. A Hillary Clinton photo album might show her wearing pants suits at all stages: as a baby, as a wedding dress, at the beach….
It’s satire but not vicious. The drawing is light, the body language is cheerful, not threatening.

Ha Ha, I’m not laughing. I find this offensive, ignorant and disrespectful, just to name a few. It just shows that racism has raised it’s ugly head again. Will it ever end in our life time? We can never be united as Americans because every time someone gets a chance, they print it, say it or show it publicly in any media or open forum that they can. If you are a Democrat and will not vote for Obama because he is black, then go ahead and vote for McCain. See where that gets you with the economy, jobs, health care, the war, housing, oh and your retirement savings, don’t forget there won’t be social security. The whole world will be laughing at the United States, another BUSH! Stop looking at the color of Obama’s skin, he is a qualified candidate that can lead this country. When you leave your house everyday to go to work, shopping, recreation, etc., I am sure that you see people that are not the same color, nationality, religion, financial status as you are. Whatever your opinion is of them, do you jot down in your notebook a despicable picture of them and post it on a board or the front page of a paper? No, then don’t do it to Obama and his family. Whether you like it or not we are all here together so let’s pull together for our country. If not, then “Shame on you”!

Posted by: Joyce | July 15, 2008, 1:42 am 1:42 am

Another facet I saw here was ‘radical chic comes to the White House.’
It’s satirizing a nightmare of some of Obama’s opponents — and a nostalgic daydream of some of his supporters. Maybe the young supporters who express such shock, don’t remember the radical chic era.

Posted by: 1950democrat | July 15, 2008, 2:10 am 2:10 am

This entire thing blown out of scale reveals exactly how weak Obama is — his entire campaign is based on an “image”. Now New Yorker’s funny picture – yes, it is intended to be funny — put his best weapon (or his only weapon) into jerpody, Obama and his supporters have gone crazy. Indeed, he is almost nothing after his image gets peeled off. No substance, no record.

If most of you bloggers (and you know who you are) would take a step back and look at where your comments are stemming from, you would see that it is created from FEAR. In your sick clouded minds cluttered by pride, you fear the fact that your country could soon be run by a person that does not match your picture perfect iconic figure for “The President of the United States of America”. Some, not all of you, have been raised to think that you were so much better than other ethnic backgrounds that you would have to re-construct the very building blocks that your patriotism was created from. Let’s put our individual visual preferences to the side and think about what’s in the best interest of our country as a whole.

Posted by: SLB | July 15, 2008, 2:27 am 2:27 am

The intention or accuracy of an image like your July 21 cover is of only secondary importance. However unwittingly, The New Yorker has contributed to the public ignorance, and it is doubtful that anything they do now will put the genie back in the bottle.
Nevertheless, I suggest that they devote your next cover either to an image of a age- and captivity-demented John McCain, his cancer-scarred head red with irrational anger, his scowling aged face screaming into the red telephone, while his other arthritic hand reaches for the button…
…or, a simple page of very bold text listing all of the misconceptions that they have so well reinforced about Barak Obama.

Posted by: bco | July 15, 2008, 2:27 am 2:27 am

I certainly don’t think that the issue will cause people to change their vote by any means, but the illustration is absolutely offensive to me, and I can imagine to the Obamas, despite understanding the intent. The depiction is simply ludicrous; the whole idea of Obama being Muslim and a terrorist just shows how incredibly predjudiced and ignorant a great number of the American population are. I don’t care who the readers are, I don’t care if the editor purports that the readers of this magazine are intellectuals who will understand the satire; clearly the intelligent people at The New Yorker knew that the cover would be controversial, and therefor knew that it would not only be seen by their elite readers, but over and over again by the entire nation. Therefore, the excuse that the satire is acceptable because it would only be seen by a select few who would certainly understand it is a FARCE.

The irony I see here is the extreme sensitivity from Obama and his supporters. They could go out speak ill of anybody, and claim that they are the expert of Constitution. Doesn’t 1st amendemt give New Yorker the right to be funny in a satire way? now the Obama supporters want to censor freedom of speech — of course, only when they felt that the freedom is used not in a favorable way to them.

Posted by: Amy | July 15, 2008, 2:42 am 2:42 am

Psst. All you ‘highly educated’ Obama supporters. Did you bother READING the massive article that provides the history of Obama?
If you did you’d never again say that he stands for “America”, “Change” or “the common-people.”
I sincerely hope you guys start looking into the REAL issues of your candidate. WHERE has he been? What has his actions shown? I’m not talking about smears or rumors. I’m speaking about facts. READ the article! You DO…do that, right? Read? Actual print? Try it. Then come join PUMA and help get the right democratic candidate on the ballot in November. Please, I implore you, do it now, before it’s too late.
Because, darlings, Obama never stood a chance of winning in November. It’s a GOP set-up if you ask me. Yet, who-ever’s responsible, America will not put this man in the White house as POTUS.
I’m a very progressive liberal from urban NY, btw. Young, open…and have always seen through Obama’s posturing. Many Obama supporters (including several delegates) are coming to the conclussion that he is NOT the man he claimed to be. He is nothing but a demagogue. Again, do some real research.
Since our FIRST president, satirical political cartoons have been a tradition in this country.
Why is nothing good enough for Obama? Why is EVERYTHING off limits with this guy? Hillary has been literally, publically castrated since she was first lady…never saw a whole day’s news coverage over any of that.
Grow up, get a clue, and HELP get a REAL candidate. For the love of whatever you hold sacred!

Awesome! While clearheaded individuals can argue whether said picture was too over the top, this person calls those who don’t have a problem with it “unpatriotic”. Also, the writer in question sees this as another example that proves the notion regarding the stupdity of Americans! However, I’m disappointed this person didn’t also point out the embarrassment they feel regarding stupid American’s monolingualism. After all, Obama himself can find many things to look down on when it comes to those he wishes to govern. In the end though, the writer totally redeems themselve with the complete Non sequitur that those who don’t find offense with the picture need to “get over it and face the reality that BARACK OBAMA WILL BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT”. Priceless. The only thing that would have made this post better would have been if the writer had found space to write an inane campaign slogan.
“Obama 2008 Yes We Can!!”
Nevermind…it’s perfect!

It is all about image. This is the only thing that Obama has to run on. He has an “image”. Now, the New Yorker appears to give him a differen image — which is not the intention of the cover, it is intended to be funny and satire.
The irony is Obama’s good image, which he and his campaign has gone to length to create, is as much “false” as the New Yorker’s cover image. How come the media is not challenging his “clean” image but become so busy at descrediting this “bad” image? Many journalists should be aware, the more you try to defend Obama, the less you become credible.

This cover is very close to hitting the nail right on the head. This country is so complacent and asleep and will believe anybody or anything. We are politicly correcting ourselves into oblivion and destruction. It is a real scary disaster that people can’t see the real truth. God help us all if these people get into the White House.

Posted by: Doyle | July 15, 2008, 3:27 am 3:27 am

I am outraged over the cover of The New Yorker. It is not funny, nor is it in good taste. No other candiate running for President has over been “colored” as anti- American, with references to being a terorist. The New Yorker crossed the line this time. This is NOT satire, but down right dis-respectful to AMERICA and AMERICAN. Other countries don’t have to dis-respect us. It appears we can handle the job our self! How stupid is that?

Posted by: Dr. B | July 15, 2008, 3:27 am 3:27 am

The New Yorker editor NOT understanding how this cover can be used to perpetuate the myths about the Obamas shows the same lack of understanding and judgment that Hillary Clinton’s people showed when her oft-repeated “under sniper fire in Bosnia” mis-statements were blown out of the water by news footage that proved her statements wrong, and instantly circulated on the internet. If indeed it was only on New York newsstands that this cover was displayed – most New Yorkers would “get” the satire. But it’s a different world – if the editor really doesn’t understand how the internet has changed everything, he needs to go back to school . . . after he resigns his position at The New Yorker.

‘Tis better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.

Posted by: deadends | July 15, 2008, 3:49 am 3:49 am

Anyone who contends that this cover cartoon as simply an example of harmless satire either has their head in a dark place, or has ulterior motives.
The educated relative sophisticates who will “get” the satirical intent do not represent the great many less-educated middle/lower class voters(mind you) who will simply see this cover on magazine stands, lying around at the laundromat, etc.,…and who WILL be influenced negatively by the image.
Satire? Yes, but dangerous in that it suggests (with the picture’s power of “a thousand words”) untruths that will register on many who are not New Yorker reader-types.
The result?-almost certain negative influence.
Not deliberate? It is beyond difficult to imagine that this was unintentional on the part of the publishers.
We know how stupid they think We are. The question raised by this issue is “How stupid do they want us to think THEY are?”
New Yorker magazine’s description of their hatchet-job cover as “simply satire” is disingenuous, to put it far too kindly.

Posted by: LS | July 15, 2008, 3:55 am 3:55 am

The point isn’t whether the depiction of the Obamas on the cover of The New Yorker was meant as satire or not. There are many on the Internet who will, or already do, believe the persistent, false rumors which abound. The New Yorker underestimates its influence if it believes that this is just a humorous send-up, which will have no influence on voters. But this controversy is just a distraction from the actual issues: the economy, the price of gas, jobs and the war in Iraq, which appears to be expanding in Afghanistan and, possibly, Iran.

LS: Great, it should balance out the problem where ‘the great many less-educated middle/lower class voters(as you put it)’ who will vote for Obama with no understanding of how his policies could damage this country.
Seriously though, I think the actual voting population – those who make it to the polls, are a little smarter than you think. I think most of the ignorance is in the lower class democratic side. Those types who think you can tax a corporation and they won’t just cut payroll and pass the remaining costs on to the consumer by raising the price of their product. Those who can’t understand that by taxing less, the government usually takes in more, because more corps choose to declare their profits rather than bury them in expenses, loop holes (which cost expensive accountant money) or push them off to a better looking tax year.

Obama is a tough guy. He can take it. If he couldn’t, he wouldn’t have gotten this far. You don’t become a politician in the country if you can’t take a few jabs. As a fellow African American – or whatever we are supposed to be called these days so our feelings don’t get hurt, I would actually feel a little bit embarassed if that many people were outraged and rushing to my defense on something racially charged, as though Ia was an 8 year old child. He can take the criticism – truthful or untruthful. It’s not going to stop if he wins. This is hardball afterall, the stakes are as high as they get, so let him play.

We will never know one another(thankfully), and this will be my last post tonight.
I will use it to inform you that I am an Obama supporter and most definitely non-religious.
Also, it is statistically-very-likely that you would fare disappointingly against me in a comparison of class, brow-height, or intelligence.
But don’t let such information stop you from characterizing O’s supporters as you so desperately need to see them.
I suppose the election (if fair,…not a sure thing by any means, these days) will show what our national judgement is really like.
The last two presidential elections have not been encouraging in either aspect (fairness OR judgement). If we don’t wake up this time, we will probably simply deserve what we will be getting. However, Duh!bya’s ratings have slipped drastically,…so perhaps there is some hope.
Best wishes to us all.

I come from Norway and we had a bit of a controversy last year as a Danish embassy was attacked in Paktistan and one of our newspaper editors in solidarity did what a Danish newspapers had done earlier, published a cartoon of Mohammed, or in the Norwegian cartonn a man with a t-shirt saying “I am Mohammed, which is why they want to kill me”.
Hundreds of people were killed in huge demonstrations in Pakistan, the embassy was attacked and more important than ever was our resolve that political satire, especially in cartoons which we had for hundreds of years, has to be protected. It is an embedded part of our freedom of speech.
War against terror. This is were it starts – so take a stand!

Satire? what satire? This is gutter racism. Do these editors have any brains, or they think that demeaning people of color is funny? It is only funny to those who think that depicting bigotry and racism in the name of satire is acceptable. It should not be tolerated. You know what satire did when religion was used as “satire” in Denmark – this is of the same caliber and should definitely not be tolerated or accepted. Those who were involved should be held responsible.

The cartoon really offended me for a few reasons: First, it is fueling the lies surrounding BO’s faith. He is not a Muslim and his wife doesn’t hate America. Second, it was plain and simple trash. Not in good taste at all. It distracts from the real issues Americans are facing. Our economy is in the toilet thanks to the GOP. McCain is more of the same. HE has admitted he knows very little about the economy and wants to keep us in Iraq indefinately. Why people would vote for McCain boggles me.
We should put a cartoon of McCain as a paranoid asian hunter with a walking cane in one hand, and a gun aimed at some arabs in another. Cindy can have shopping bags and money coming out of her behind. In the background we can have a nuclear bomb going off–cause that’s exactly what will happen if McCain gets elected. He will start ww3–next is Iran, China after that???

The most frightening comment I’ve heard was the commentator who gave the American public two choices on how to look at this: either it is satire or it is slander. Shouldn’t the real question be, “Is it true or false?” If that’s not the real question then do we have freedom of speech?

To quote the early master of such humor, Jonathan Swift:
“Satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody’s face but their own.”
The problem with this cartoon is that many, perhaps even most outside of the sophisticated political circles simply do not understand the depiction is humorous. Remember that 49% voted for Bush TWICE. Obviously they completely lack any sense of humor. Perhaps the artist needed to make it much clearer… say in the style of Velázquez’s famous painting “Las Meninas” in which his reflection is shown executing the work in a mirror, in the painting. In this instance, the cartoonist could have shown Coulter’s reflection drawing the cartoon. If even that is too subtle, then we could see, in the front of the work, Limbaugh’s backside (not a pretty site) in the cartoon while he’s scribbling this “satire.” In order for satire to work, it must show the viewer a better insight into himself, not reinforce his distortions.

They wanted Obama in-he is. They wanted Bush despised-he is. Have Americans become so shallow that we are allowing a group of journalism majors to make all of our most important decisions and choices for us? Everything the media does is calculated and the wind seems to be turning in Obama’s case. Let’s just wait and see what they want us to believe next.

Obamaalltheway: Yes, Obama may be our next president and that’s exactly what Bin Laden and Al Qaeda are waiting for. So Obama stated that Osama Bin Laden if captured would get the death penalty. That’s what Bin Laden and Al Qaeda would do to Obama if they got hold of him. Don’t think for one minute the terrorists are stupid. Bin Laden is ten times more educated than Obama ever will be and he will make his move. Lieberman is right, we could be attacked in 2009 and if Obama is in office god help us.

Is the satire True or False?
Obvious from the over reaction from the Obama team it is True! I think thou dost protest to much!
There is always a hint of truth in every joke and in every satire.
He has leaning towards the Muslims as he stated in his own book. To paraphrase, when push comes to shove, I will be on the side of the Muslims.
And Michelle, is a radical as she stated in her university thesis.
We do not change our stripes overnight, as Obama would love for people to believe; especially about his leaving the Black Theology teachings of Rev. Wright.
So, I would conclude that the satirical drawing was right on, and that it is a true reflection of the Obama’s hidden mind set.

the pronblem with the cover is this…
terrorism is in line with rape and the holocaust.
Americans view terrorism like the rape and destruction of someone we love…
The editor of the New Yorker must have that feeling missing… would he find it acceptable to Make John McCain look like a rapist…or Hillary Clinton like a Nazi. If rumors were out there of such…and there have been disgusting horrible rumors/lies of John McCain and violence toward women and of Hillary Clinton’s church being founded by Nazi’s.
They are horrible rumors and I would hope would never be drawn as a cloudy gesture of making fun of the rumors by putting a swastika on Hillary or show John McCain in cartoon form beating and raping a woman. These are images that I believe they would put in a different category…adn so should the image they used.
The problem isn’t the right to free speech…
the problem is the responsibility that goes with that free speech.
The New Yorker needs to acknowledge this may have been an unreasoned and an intellectually limited choice they made.
and they should apologize.
this is not parody of a subject that can be “risked”… and if they do not understand that …well the editor needs to understand what terrorism means to Americans…and how strongly we feel toward our country.

I am a 52-year old white man, and I think that Senator Obama’s ability to capture the essence of race relations in America is truly amazing and inspiring.
Unfortunately, too many people want to use our racial, ethnic or religious differences to divide us.
Unfortunately, many of the articles and blogs about Obama have a racial overtone. Some of these articles and blogs are outright racist, and I wish that the writers would reflect before they publish or post to consider if they are simply advocating a position or if they are actually being racist.
At all events, I am hopeful that the ongoing angst over race will force racial issues to into the open where we can address and resolve them.
Earlier this year, Senator Obama eloquently articulated the essence of race relations in America. Obama’s speech really got to the heart of race relations and he did a superb job of trying to re-focus Americans to get beyond race and to focus on the important issues that face us.
Regardless of our differences, it is clear that many of us have arrived at the viewpoint expressed by Senator Obama, as a result of a willingness to learn and grow as civilized people.
I believe Senator Obama is going to be a thoughtful and superb leader as President of the United States. I am voting for and supporting Senator Obama in 2008 and beyond.
What a man…what a great leader!

Maybe if Obama would stand up and talk about the fact that his father was a “non practicing” muslim, his sister is a Buddist and his mom was an Athiest this rumor would end.
Obama has avoided the discussion of his father’s religion since day one.
Obama is making his own bed. He ought to lay in it.

Obama is ruining the Democratic Party.
This has too many racial undertones to win the election.
Why didn’t he just wait and let Hillary win. He needed the White House know with all to act like a leader.
Now we find out that he is just an empty suit, no resume, no experience, not vetted and he is certainly unelectable.

I have thought and have seen the paralleism between the Hitler campaign and the Obama campaign. It’s scary but true. The people of Germany idolized Hitler and fell at his feet, much like Americans are doing to Obama. Hitler had a hidden agenda as I believe Obama has as well. There are way to many “unknowns” about Obama. I don’t think America really likes this guy that much, they just want change and since McCain is a republican, America automatically tunes him out because of Bush. McCain is very different from Bush and will be the best candidate to lead America. I pray America will come to her senses and vote Obama out…..if not, America will enter very dark days as did Germany under Hitler.

The July 21st illustrated cover of a disgusting description of the Obama’s is outrageous. I would have expected that from a sleezy Magazine but not from The New Yorker and I find this offensive. One has to say to ones self, when is a joke just too far. Would it have been funny if they had a picture of McCain’s pill popping wife on the cover with and a government credit card swiping away our tax money? No, therefore a public apology is needed. Putting race aside it is simply an attack on their campaign and their character.

The New Yorker did this to prop up the creepy Clinton campaign. How else can you see it? It does match the creepy Clinton style of doing psyhologocal operations that will hit wide distribution in the press.
If that is true, then what is the creepy Clinton plan? I expect an attempt to take over at the Democratic convention. They are in something of a bind as they sold their influence for some $100 million. Now they have no influence.

I will vote for McCain even if he has to be carried into the oval office with O2 cart, paramedics and alzheimer’s specialists in tow. The alternative is unthinkable. Unfortunately, as bad as some say the USA has it (which I don’t really buy) the world situation is first and foremost. Other issues important, but don’t mean a damn thing if we can not, nor will not, protect ourselves. Obama just does not have the experience nor ability, to do that -his changing course on Iraq does show his ignorance in foreign policy matters.

During the primaries, the lack of satire poking Obama, or the outright swooning and sympathy for him (always the innocent victim of the nasty Hillary), was amazing. Now it’s Obama’s turn to be in the headlights, and he is crying fowl. It’s natural for Americans to be squeamish about someone as privileged as Michelle stating that after almost forty years in the U.S., she was finally “proud to be an American.” Or Obama’s membership in a race-baiting church. Or his disdain for those whose “cling to guns” etc. What I find even more interesting in that Obama and his supporters are so outraged. They didn’t have much sympathy for Clinton when the media picked her apart for much less volatile characteristics (cackles anyone?).

Posted by: playitfair | July 15, 2008, 11:46 am 11:46 am

The “official” Obama people should learn to loosen up a bit but not only that, they should see and think about the cover and give thanks to the fact that it’s a perfect antidote to all of the Obama-is-a-secret-Muslim email that the dirty tricks people are promulgating.
Actually, lack of sense of humor notwithstanding, the cover and it’s aftermath will be doing the Obama campaign a huge favor by bringing this poisonous slander campaign out on to the national level by making fun of the idea that Obama’s presidency will bring a radical closet Muslim to the Oval Office . Kudo’s to the N.Y. for their daringness!

dl said: “..almost every pol in the Chicago area is associated with Ayers … including many repubs…duh.”
That’s the problem. Obama, raised in a gentle private school in aloha Hawaii, Ivy League grad, with the world open to him … chose Chicago BECAUSE OF its ‘Black culture’ and ‘Black experience’, in which Ayers was admired and powerful. Obama chose to join that cultural package, which also included Wright’s church, ‘Black Nationalism’, etc.
Sure it’s mostly mellowed to softly faded radical chic by now, even in Chicago. But that’s the culture and image that Obama chose to wear, so it’s fair game for satire.

As a highly educated professor of law, I bet Senator Obama thinks the New Yorker cover is riotously funny (I believe the candidate himself has been silent on the issue). His handlers on the other hand, think they are protecting him by criticizing a political cartoon as tasteless and offensive. I think their gross overreaction is offensive and causes me great concern for how they will handle any criticism of Obama if he were to become president. The more appropriate response from the Obama camp would be to commend the New Yorker for pointing out all of the ridiculous, over-the-top falsehoods/rumors circulating about their candidate. Apparently, the ability for those who support Senator Obama for president to discern irony in this political cartoon is sorely missing. I bet (and hope) there will be a flurry of political cartoons making fun of the knee-jerk reactions to the New Yorker cartoon.

Sorry, Mr. Tapper. I’m no right-wing conservative. I’m an Independent, who as a matter of fact, donated generously last year to the Obama campaign.
I’ve turned 180 degrees. With Senator Obama’s CHOICE of a 20-year membership to a church with a bigoted minister, and comments by his wife about not being proud of one’s country (which is really distasteful given her years of privilege in the form of Ivy League scholarships and a salary that jumped from $121,000 to $316,000 in ONE YEAR – at the same time that Obama secured a contribution to the hosp. where she works), no one had to create any vicious or racist material. The Obamas cooked up and served their satirical material on a silver platter all on their own.

Good writing, interesting story telling and intriguing commentary are all comprised of many factors; such as simile, satire, metaphor, allegory and clever wordplay. Such writing techniques are also often employed to give certain social and political statements more impact (especially in the media). This is because in this country, there is such a thing as ‘freedom of speech’. But that freedom is to be expressed within reason, and with a level of social awareness and responsibility. To make broad, blanket statements with reckless abandon, with no regard to the potential ramifications is in fact, immature and irresponsible, and can (in many cases) be considered slanderous.
If a picture is indeed worth a thousand words, then such a (slanderous) statement can also be made by way of graphic illustration. Without composing a single word, an individual can paint a vivid mental picture in the mind of his viewer with a single image. And frankly, in a world already plagued by such extreme greed, hatred, animosity, prejudice, selfish motive and hidden agenda, certain images simply should not be painted!
This is the year 2008, perhaps one of the most pivotal moments in political history. We thought it was a big deal when Halle Berry and Denzel Washington were both nominated for an Oscar in the same year. But that phenomenon pales in comparison to the year a black man and a white woman are leading candidates in the race for the office of president! But as much of a statement as that makes for the mental progress made by America, there is always a tasteless bad apple spoiling it for everybody!
As far as I’m concerned, the publisher and editors of the New Yorker magazine (as well as the artist) who depicted senator Obama as a terrorist/radical black panther, should be held at least as accountable as Michael Richards for racially profiling and blatantly disrespecting black audience members for walking in late at one of his live shows; or Don Imus for publically referring to the African American members of a respectable college basketball team as “nappy headed hoes”! And let’s not forget the recent public display of hangmen’s nooses on the school grounds of Jena Louisiana!
I feel that, just as the hanging of nooses has now been deemed a hate crime (punishable by law), each and every form of distasteful political statement (verbal or visual) should be just as punishable; whereby making the perpetrator of such crimes subject to the same drastic repercussions! In many ways (technologically, agriculturally, industrially, information/mass media etc) the world is making forward progress by leaps and bounds. But in perhaps even more ways (socially, economically, politically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually etc) we’re digressing at an alarming rate! Perhaps it is because technically ‘pro’ is the opposite of ‘con’… there is such little ‘progress’ in ‘congress’!
Yours truly, Raku The Narrator

Obama and his friends comprise the biggest crookedness in a totally crooked city!
And few “POLS” are associated with
B O’s special crew!
The question I cannot shake from my relatively open mind is…that $10,00,000 Obama had “earmarked” for his church….
Did that money go to “pay off” Jeremiah?
I mean, the $10,000,000 Wright got came from SOMEwhere…., that plus his mini retirement mansion…. and if not from here, WHERE???
And either way, what ever happened to separation of church and state?
Are these the changes in B O’s crystal ball?

Who Mr. Remnick thinks he is kidding ?
To make the NEW YORKER cover a satire of the anti-Obama scaremongerings, it
should depict a RightWingExtremistNRA type, preferably in militia camouflage, with a hate-distorted face, and plenty of lethal weapons to match, pronouncing a speech ( you know which kind ) with
the cartoon as a king-size ” KNOW YOUR
ENEMY ” poster as background.
Has the NYer lost its sophisticated
” Progressive ” touch ?
Or has it politically turncoated to the point of daring to put forth the kind of explosive not even National Review or Soldier Of Fortune would handle with a remote-controlled robot.
Speaking of RWExtrmists-NRA, the NYer cover as it stands, is the stuff of their wildest never-dare-to-dream-about dreams.
And judging by his explanations, we have
the right to ask if Mr. Remnick,in the final analysis, is the best ninety-degree corner shooter we have seen until now ?

So the public displaying of hanging nooses ( with no necks inside ) at the
Jena, Louisiana, school is a hate crime punishable by law, while the vicious beatings at same school some time before are not ?
And a political statement nowadays is distateful only when it a politically incorrect one.

Well KC_1971, you should take a look at
the caricatures they made of President
NIXON at the time of Watergate and then
put them beside the current anti-BUSH
products today. It’s incredible how the
standards have fallen ! It’s like comparing the three giant pyramids on Gizah with the three piteous shabby little dwarves at their feet.
Even the staunchest NIXON supporters
cannot help appreciate grrudgingly the
cleverness of the cartoons authored by
worthies such as Herblock, David Haynie,
Rahan Lurie published at the time by
Newsweek and TIME ( the newsweekly magazine ).
Those great names have disappeared, and
the anti-BUSH cartoons in Tweedledee&
Tweedledum mags today are so tastelessly
childish and bland that even the most
enraged BUSH-hater would find them worthless.
To make it short let’s say that grossness and glibness ( trademarks of
today’ s progressive liberal cartoonists) do not make up for efficiency.

A real satire would be John Mccain in a burning plane that is hurtling toward the earth. Also put Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam in the back seat cling to one another screaming in terror. The caption should read. “Does America really want John “wayne” Mccain back in the pilots seat.” LOL

On the internet, no one knows you’re satire?
I hope it’s just that the people who never would have got it, in the past never would have had forums to post their non-getting.
Look, if there were a cover showing Reagan or Bush Jr wearing cowboy clothes, boots and spurs up on the desk, six-shooter shooting holes in a target in the shape of the enemy du jour — would they take that literally too? Or would they deny that it accurately indicated the rancher-president’s cultural background and attitudes?

The bottomline: the NYer must need to boost sales. It’s a great magazine but everyone is cutting back and those little things like subscriptions go down the tubes. Alot of people “get it” but a lot of people just “don’t like it” (the cover). I’m a Republican and I don’t like it. Can’t we all just get along?

Remnick took umbrage at the comments in your blog as a “cheap shot” … but somehow the “cheap shot” of satirizing a point of view without naming and illustrating the antagonist in the same frame escapes him?
Talk about selective intelligence!
Oh, with regard to your comments, I don’t thing there was anything cheap about them. Thank you for saying what needed to be said.

Posted by: DBee | July 17, 2008, 5:18 pm 5:18 pm

Juging from some of the comments on here (especially from the Obama detractors), it’s little surprise that Remnick has also completely missed the point.
Satire only works if it has some elements of truth, and proper context. This cover is not satire, and to try and claim it is is fraudulent.
Remnick should have immediately come right out with the following statement: “The New Yorker attempted to lampoon the politics of fear, but in our haste, we now realize that we did a very poor job, and we sincerely apologize to the Obama campaign for our error.” Anything less is unacceptable.
Perhaps if the cover had a picture of Karl Rove holding a paint brush and a palette, with exact same picture being painted on a canvas, then that could be considered satire. However, to claim that the cover as is was “satire,” without implicating the subject being mocked is simply fraudulent.
